SYDNEY
Welcome to Sydney! While the city is famous for its scenic harbour views and the architectural wonder of the Sydney Opera House, the CBD offers much more. The heart of the city is now buzzing with cool laneways, casual dining venues, shopping hotspots and hip bars. Latenight dining continues to expand, so check out three of the best in The Fix (page 72). One of the city’s highlights is its ferry rides. A journey that attracts commuters and visitors alike is the F4 cross-harbour trip from Circular Quay to Pyrmont. Here, it’s worth stopping at Balmain East Wharf to stroll along Darling Street, which has a raft of local hotels, cafés, bookshops and stores (page 28). As a treat this month, don’t miss Handa Opera’s performance of “West Side Story” right on Sydney Harbour (page 14). See the live show while you take in an unsurpassed view of the harbour and bridge. And who could resist that?

CHIEF CONCIERGE, HYATT REGENCY SYDNEY
Q: There’s a lot happening in Sydney over April. What are some of the not-to-miss activities on your calendar?
A: Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival is a great option for a day at the races, with a major event being held every Saturday throughout April. Held at Royal Randwick and Rosehill Gardens Racecourses, these are very easy to get to. See your Les Clefs d’Or Concierge and they can even arrange a private viewing suite for you. Q: What is a stand-out activity for kids these school holidays?
A: You can't go past the Sydney Royal Easter Show. Held from April 12 to 23, there's ample time to get to Sydney Olympic Park and experience the fair. The annual event celebrates Australian agriculture and provides a unique insight into rural traditions and culture. Kids can experience live shows that include horses, cattle, sheep dogs, wood-chopping and many carnival rides. Q: If you could take any ferry ride in Sydney, where would you travel to?
A: Located directly opposite Milsons Point and Barangaroo, Balmain is very accessible by public ferry from the city. One of Sydney’s oldest and most established suburbs, Balmain is now a real foodie destination, with some of the city’s best pubs
and pâtisseries. It’s a lovely old part of Sydney that has something for everyone. Q: What is your favourite seafood dining destination?
A: Saint Peter restaurant in Paddington. What I like about this restaurant is that they select their sh daily so the menu is always changing. You will also be amazed how creative their team of award-winning chefs are. They actually offer dry-aged seafood from their specially designed cool rooms—something that is unique and that adds to the avour of the seafood! Q: Where should visitors go for a great view of the city?
A: Kirribilli has a great view of Sydney Harbour and the Opera House. Located on the north side of Sydney Harbour, it is very accessible by ferry or just a short walk across the Sydney Harbour Bridge. It’s a very pretty suburb that you can spend some time exploring.

THE PEAKS AND VALLEYS of the Blue Mountains contain so many natural wonders and hidden treasures that it feels like a different world. But at just under two hours’ drive from Sydney, it’s an easily accessible destination that suits everything from a day-trip to an extended getaway. The spectacular beauty that seeps into every nook of the Blue Mountains lends itself to a slower, more creative and leisurely mentality. Known for breathtaking natural vistas such as the Three Sisters and Wentworth Falls, the Mountains are also a hub for creatives. Each small town brims with galleries, bakeries and retail boutiques selling handmade trinkets. If you're able to stay for a few days in the Blue Mountains, it can pay to hire a car from Sydney (avis.com.au) and drive between these small towns, all of which have their own unique communities and attractions. However, if you can only get away for a day, it's best to choose an area to explore thoroughly so you can move at a more relaxed pace. Companies such as AATKings (aatkings.com) also offer full-day return bus tours from Sydney, so you can jump on and off at major sites and let someone else do the decision-making. An obvious choice for those looking to tick off all the major attractions is Katoomba, home to the Three Sisters. Located at Echo Point—a lookout spot with sweeping valley views that will quite literally take your breath away—the landmark is an iconic rock formation that, according to
Aboriginal legend, was created when three sisters were turned to stone. These days, the sisters draw millions of visitors each year, who marvel at their lofty forms that jut out from a carpet of trees over 3,000 feet above sea level. In autumn this vista is particularly spectacular, as the surrounding foliage transforms itself into a glowing blanket of orange, gold, pink, green and silver. For the visitor looking for a more bodily form of gratification, the Hydro Majestic Hotel (hydromajestic.com.au)—just a short drive away in Medlow Bath—is famous for its indulgent high teas and opulent architecture. Another popular Blue Mountains destination is Leura, in which a full day could easily be spent wandering through tree-lined streets and exploring craft stores and bakeries. If you draw the line at one bakery stop, make sure it’s Bakehouse on Wentworth (bakehouseonwentworth.com.au), where freshly made pies and decadent cakes are snatched up by locals. Try to make it here early before everything is gone! Leura is also home to more than its fair share of activities—many of them at Scenic World (scenicworld.com.au). The family-owned tourist attraction is a town of its own accord, holding within its sprawling clifftop structure limitless drinking and dining options, shops, sights and events. A particular highlight is the Scenic Skyway, a cable car that soars 270 metres above ancient canopies and allows 360-degree views thanks to an impressive (and slightly terrifying!) glass floor.

the retail shopfront or, even better, learn how to make these things yourself. Lyttleton Stores hosts regular workshops that run anywhere between a couple of hours to a full day. Some of their upcoming events in April include beekeeping, life drawing, permaculture and medicinal tea-blending. The best way to keep up-to-date is to check their website. If you’re driving to the Blue Mountains from Sydney, make sure to make a pitstop at The Australian Botanic Garden in Mount Annan (australianbotanicgarden.com.au), a picturesque haven bursting with native flora. Located on the eastern outskirts of the mountains as you approach also sits Norman Lindsay Gallery (normanlindsay.com.au) and the associated Lindsay’s Café, a heritage-listed museum and residence established by the author of iconic Australian children’s book “The Magic Pudding”. Despite the temptation to order the namesake pudding, trust us: the scones are the truly magical item on this menu. Although the Blue Mountains can quite easily be done as a day trip from Sydney, there’s so much to see that an overnight stay is recommended for a more leisurely pace. From treehouse glamping to AirBnBs to local hotels replete with country hospitality— the Blue Mountains contain a broad range of traditional and boutique accommodation, all under two hours from the city.

If you’re keen to get your feet back on the ground after a run-in with the birds, Wentworth Falls Loop is one of the most popular walking tracks in the Blue Mountains, taking you through lush bushland past waterfalls (including the namesake Wentworth Falls), cliffs and lookouts. The full circuit is 10.2 kilometres and takes around six hours to complete, but it is also possible to do sections of the track. Make a plan before you go using sites such as Wild Walks (wildwalks.com) and, in case your energy flags along the way, stop by Leura’s The Candy Store beforehand to fill your pockets with sherbet bombs and peppermint pinwheels (candystore.com.au). A lesser-known but no less interesting town in the Blue Mountains is Lawson, named after Lieutenant William Lawson, one of the three famed explorers who first crossed the Blue Mountains. This historic town is full of beautiful traditional buildings, many of them now owned by independent retailers selling unique handmade items. The artisanal side of Lawson is embodied in Lyttleton Stores (lyttletonstores.com.au), a relatively new food and retail initiative that champions sustainability in all its forms. Comprising a grocery store, kitchen, art gallery and garden, most everything here is made either on-site or sourced from local suppliers and creatives. Stop by and grab a meal made from local seasonal produce, a souvenir from

Harbour Town Spectacular fireworks, an internationally renowned yacht race and a world famous opera house. SYDNEY’S ICONIC HARBOUR HAS pretty much seen it all since Lieutenant James Cook arrived aboard the Endeavour in 1770 and named it Port Jackson. It was here that the first settlers set up camp in 1788 and the harbour has been an important part of city life ever since, used for transportation and recreation. Little wonder it is widely regarded as the greatest leisure harbour in the world. On any given day, the harbour is alive with boats of all shapes and sizes, be it passenger ferries, state-of-the-art yachts or kayakers. This is particularly true during the traditional Boxing Day launch of the Rolex Sydney to Hobart yacht race, when hundreds of craft follow the racers out of the harbour. And on New Year’s Eve, there’s no better spot to be than on a boat beneath the Sydney Harbour Bridge as the breathtaking fireworks display takes place in the skies above. While the Harbour Bridge and Sydney Opera House are its two most famous landmarks, the harbour has plenty more sights up its sleeve. Circular Quay, Luna Park and Anzac Bridge are all accessible and visible from the water along with hundreds of bays, coves,

Australian opal is not only the world’s most fascinating and colourful gemstone, it can also be a sound long-term investment.
Fire from the Outback CALLED ‘THE RAINBOW STONE’ by Australia’s Aboriginal people, opal is without doubt one of nature’s most remarkable gifts. It is now recognised as one of the five precious gemstones in the world, along with diamonds, emeralds, rubies and sapphires, and is an excellent investment. While small amounts of opals may be found in other countries such as Ethiopia, Mexico and the USA, Australia produces more than 90 per cent of the world’s supply. The romance of the opal is in the gem’s incredible ability to expose an infinite number of colours, forever moving with the light. Mined in the outback of Australia across three states, it is as much the call of the outback that lures the opal miner

and keeps them going. Scorched landscapes and blazing red sunsets, the night stars from horizon to horizon, this is a hauntingly beautiful country that penetrates one’s soul. The elusive opal was formed millions of years ago when liquid silica filtered down into the faults and fissures of sedimentary rock. When the water content evaporated, tiny spheres of silica remained and over time were solidified. The intensity and combination of colour occur with such variety that each gem has an individual character. In 1964 the CSIRO (Australia’s national research laboratories) unlocked the riddle of why opals have such colours. Opal is composed of minute particles of silica in closely packed
spherical aggregates. It is the varying arrangement of these particles (and, of course, cavities) that causes the reflected light to be split into the full range of colours of the spectrum. There are three main production areas in Australia for mining opals. There’s the bright and beautiful Queensland boulder opal which is mined around the Quilpie area in Western Queensland. Lightning Ridge in New South Wales is the home of the famous black opal which derives its name from the colour of the nobbies or pieces of rough opal in which the gems are usually found. The third area is Coober Pedy and Mintabie in South Australia. Coober Pedy is an Aboriginal name, meaning ‘white man in a hole’, which describes

exactly what miners still do today— live underground to escape the fierce heat of summer. This is where the white or milk opals are mined. The value of an opal depends on the amount and brilliance of the colour, preferably being evenly distributed across the face of the polished gem. The greater the spectrum of colours from red to violet, the better, with crimson, reds and orange being rarer than the greens and blues. Milkiness, cloudiness or greyness detracts from the value. Ideally, the greater the number of colours, the more prized the gem,
and if these are arranged in a block pattern, more value is added. The extremes are pin-sized dots of colour (pinfire) to one large sheet of colour (broadflash) covering the whole stone. The elusive ‘harlequin’ is the ultimate in this form but is very rare. Shapes of the finished opal vary according to the characteristics of each stone. Boulder opal is usually cut in baroque or free form, whereas seam opal is at its best presented in cabochon (domed) form. If you are buying an unset opal, it is important to consider the way it will eventually be worn. For example, some opals will offer a better play of
colour when worn vertically, as in a brooch or pendant, whereas others are best flat, as in a ring setting. There is a great deal to consider when investing in your opal, but expert advice is available for your complete pleasure and pride in an ever-inspiring piece of jewellery. Above all, buy the opal colour that appeals to you. Enjoy your purchase, knowing it’s geologically millions of years old, but will give you pleasure every day of the year. Opals—truly nature’s own fireworks!

Golden Century Smack bang in the middle of Chinatown, Golden Century has been serving Chinese seafood dishes for decades. Frequented by politicians, rock stars, chefs and everyone who’s anyone, this restaurant has a real buzz. While its seafood is legendary, the non-seafood dishes are a joy, particularly the Peking duck. The day starts with an extensive dim sum service at midday and the doors don’t shut until 4am. The one dish you must try is the XO pippies.
Frankie’s Pizza Come for the pizza, stay for the rock ’n’ roll! From the front this venue looks like a typical pizza parlour, but out the back is where it all happens. At heart, Frankie's is an old-school rock venue with live bands, rows of pinball machines, an extensive list of beers and plenty of noise. The house band plays every Monday and karaoke nights are not to be missed. Open from 4pm to 3am, 6 days a week. The one dish you must try is the pepperoni pizza.
City Extra A Sydney institution, City Extra is open 24 hours a day, 365 days year. It serves good, hearty fare–fish ’n’ chips, burgers, schnitzels and T-bones–that will satisfy the hungriest of patrons. Sit outside and you can look out over the harbour, just an arm’s length away. The full menu is available at all times and late-night guests are often joined by hospital workers, opera goers and students. The one dish you must try is the Journo burger with the works.
