SYDNEY
Although it doesnʼt get too cold in Sydney, the harbour city still knows how to get down in the snow. This month, the grounds in front of picturesque St Maryʼs Cathedral have been turned into a European-style wonderland thanks to Skating At Sydney, complete with an ice-skating rink and Alpine Bar (page 17). Continuing the northern theme, head to The Rocks this Bastille Day weekend to find the streets fi lled with fairy-light-strewn chalets peddling hot chocolate and gingerbread men (page 17). Of course, there's also plenty to do for those looking to escape rather than embrace the chill. This month is the last chance to see “The National 2019: New Australian Art”, which is still on show at the Museum of Contemporary Art (page 14). We also take a look at where to discover the best of Australian art throughout the year (page 8). See you around town!

Australian Art on the Map Your guide to discovering Australian art and artists in Sydney. By Kirsty Sier.
WHEN IT COMES TO CULTURE, Australia can be a pretty bizarre place. We have historically spent a lot of time looking outwards instead of appreciating what’s in our own backyard. But in recent years something seems to have shifted, with Australian galleries both major and minor not only investing heavily in Australian artists, but also taking them overseas, where they have established themselves as “household names”. In recent years, many of our major galleries have staged seasonal blockbuster exhibitions that have revolved around emerging and established Australian talent—a phenomenon that seems to be increasing in frequency. Thankfully, this seems to be true for both non-Indigenous Australian artists and for Indigenous Australian artists, whose work is becoming more visible, and whose gallery representatives are becoming more accountable. From conceptual Australian artists with trails of international exhibitions such as Patricia Piccinini, to contemporary artists breathing fresh air into traditional forms, such as Indigenous artist Betty Kuntiwa Pumani,

who just took out the $50,000 Len Fox Painting Award 2019, this country has a wealth of homegrown talent ripe for unearthing. Here are some of the significant galleries in Sydney who have invested heavily in Australian artists.
MAIN: ROSLYN OXLEY9. BOTTOM LEFT: COOEE ART. BOTTOM RIGHT: ARTSPACE.
MUSEUM OF CONTEMPORARY ART One of the major Sydney galleries, Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA) in The Rocks has a habit of eschewing international blockbuster exhibitions in favour of supporting emerging Australian talent. More often than not, this risk-taking pays off, and the gallery has developed a reputation as a launching pad for exciting new work, as well as a magnifying glass for artforms and artists who may have been overlooked by other major galleries in the past. In addition to hosting groundbreaking contemporary exhibitions such as “The National 2019: New Australian Art”, MCA also has an impressive permanent collection with a focus on living Australian artists, with a strong commitment to work by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists. 140 George Street, The Rocks. mca.com.au
COOEE ART Australia’s oldest exhibiting Aboriginal art gallery, Cooee Art has staged more than 400 exhibitions of Indigenous art since it opened in 1981. The Cooee Art stockroom—which services two retail locations, the original Paddington shopfront and the second Bondi Beach gallery—contains more than 3,000 works of art from more than 150 individual artists, covering a wide range of regional styles. The gallery specialises in historically important bark paintings, 19th- and 20th-century artefacts and early desert boards as well as works of contemporary Indigenous art from renowned artists such as Emily Kame Kngwarreye, Tommy Yannima Watson and Clifford Possum Tjapaltjarri. Regular exhibitions are held alongside a rotating collection of artworks for sale. 31 Lamrock Avenue, Bondi Beach. 326 Oxford Street, Paddington. cooeeart.com.au
KATE OWEN GALLERY
Artspace in the historic waterside suburb of Woolloomooloo was first established in 1983 as a space with a clear objective: to act as an alternative to major Sydney galleries such as the Art Gallery of New South Wales. Run by artists, the space was used as a place of refuge for multidisciplinary creatives whose work didn’t fit into the agenda of more traditional galleries. Decades later, Artspace still functions as a breath of fresh air; with its commitment to testing new ideas, it’s more capable of surprising its audience than most. As well as its exhibition space, Artspace also provides a literal home to many artists, whose occupation of the multi-level warehouse is jointly supported by the gallery and the government. The Gunnery, 43-51 Cowper Wharf Road, Woolloomooloo. artspace.org.au
To put it plainly, Kate Owen Gallery is huge. Easy enough to miss when walking past on street level, it occupies three sprawling levels in the inner-western Sydney suburb of Rozelle. The focus of the gallery is Indigenous artwork, split across well-known and collectable Australian Aboriginal artists, and more contemporary items. Many of the works are large in scale and beg viewing in person to appreciate their depth and intricacy of colour. In addition to a huge collection of works on display, Kate Owen Gallery also puts on regular exhibitions of new work by established Australian artists. 680 Darling Street, Rozelle. kateowengallery.com
ROSLYN OXLEY9 GALLERY Little known to the general public, commercial gallery Roslyn Oxley9 is a heavyhitter in the Australian art world. Owner and founder Roslyn Oxley is credited with launching the careers of some of Australia’s most significant contemporary artists, and is widely known in the industry for her fine eye and enduring relationships. Roslyn Oxley9 is the Australian home of artists such as Bill Henson, Patricia Piccinini, Dale Frank, John Wolseley, Del Kathryn Barton and Imants Tillers, all of whom have exhibited extensively with the gallery. Any exhibition here is a cultural landmark of sorts. 8 Soudan Lane, Paddington. roslynoxley9.com.au

ABORIGINAL ART GALLERIES Another veteran gallery, Aboriginal Art Galleries has been representing Indigenous art and artists in Sydney for 28 years. Until earlier this year, the gallery had two shopfronts—one in Circular Quay and one in the Queen Victoria Building—but the founding family has recently decided to focus their attention on the Queen Victoria Building gallery. The collection on exhibit within this space demonstrates a mixed focus on emerging Indigenous artists, and artists who are nationally and internationally renowned. Alongside a selection of paintings, visitors can find traditional and contemporary crafts, artefacts and didgeridoos, all of which are accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity. Dead Central Today Central Station is alive with movement, ferrying people across the city and out of town. But before the turn of the 20th century, the land upon which it now sits was occupied by less animated inhabitants. Until 1901, a vast cemetery sprawled across Elizabeth, Devonshire and Pitt Streets, containing what was estimated to be well over 30,000 bodies. The “Dead Central” exhibition at the State Library of NSW explores the forgotten past of Sydneyʼʼs busiest station, digging up histories and stories that are told through a fascinating 35-minute audio recording. sl.nsw.gov.au 16

SYDNEY’S ICONIC HARBOUR has pretty much seen it all since Lieutenant James Cook arrived aboard the Endeavour in 1770 and named it Port Jackson. The first settlers set up camp here in 1788 and the harbour has been an important part of city life ever since, used for transportation and recreation. Little wonder it is widely regarded as the greatest leisure harbour in the world. On any given day, the harbour is alive with boats of all shapes and sizes, be it passenger ferries, state-of-the-art yachts or kayakers. This is particularly true during the traditional Boxing Day launch of the Rolex Sydney to Hobart yacht race, when hundreds of craft follow the racers out of the harbour. And on New Year’s Eve, there’s no better spot to be than on a boat beneath the Sydney Harbour Bridge

Several islands can also be found in the harbour, the most notable being Fort Denison, Shark Island and Cockatoo Island. Australian opal is not only the world’s most fascinating and colourful gemstone, it can also be a sound long-term investment.
Fire from the Outback CALLED ‘THE RAINBOW STONE’ by Australia’s Aboriginal people, opal is without doubt one of nature’s most remarkable gifts. It is now recognised as one of the five precious gemstones in the world, along with diamonds, emeralds, rubies and sapphires, and is an excellent investment. While small amounts of opals may be found in other countries such as Ethiopia, Mexico and the USA, Australia produces more than 90 per cent of the world’s supply. The romance of the opal is in the gem’s incredible ability to expose an infinite number of colours, forever moving with the light. Mined in the outback of Australia across three states, it is as much the call of the
30
WHE RE I J U LY 2019
outback that lures the opal miner and keeps them going. Scorched landscapes and blazing red sunsets, the night stars from horizon to horizon, this is a hauntingly beautiful country that penetrates one’s soul. The elusive opal was formed millions of years ago when liquid silica filtered down into the faults and fissures of sedimentary rock. When the water content evaporated, tiny spheres of silica remained and over time were solidified. The intensity and combination of colour occur with such variety that each gem has an individual character. In 1964 the CSIRO (Australia’s national research laboratories) unlocked the riddle of why opals have such colours.
Opal is composed of minute particles of silica in closely packed spherical aggregates. It is the varying arrangement of these particles (and, of course, cavities) that causes the reflected light to be split into the full range of colours of the spectrum. There are three main production areas in Australia for mining opals. There’s the bright and beautiful Queensland boulder opal which is mined around the Quilpie area in Western Queensland. Lightning Ridge in New South Wales is the home of the famous black opal which derives its name from the colour of the nobbies or pieces of rough opal in which the gems are usually found.
T H E R A I N B O W S TO N E :
(Opposite page) Opals from Giulians. (Above left) Jewellery designed by Fiona Altmann, Altmann + Cherny. (Above right) Jewellery by Opal Minded. (Left) Opal ring from Vollé Jewellery.
The intensity and combination of colour occur with such variety that each gem has an individual character.
The third area is Coober Pedy and Mintabie in South Australia. Coober Pedy is an Aboriginal name, meaning ‘white man in a hole’, which describes exactly what miners still do today—live underground to escape the fierce heat of summer. This is where the white or milk opals are mined. The value of an opal depends on the amount and brilliance of the colour, preferably being evenly distributed across the face of the polished gem. The greater the spectrum of colours from red to violet, the better, with crimson, reds and orange being rarer than the greens and blues. Milkiness,
cloudiness or greyness detracts from the value. Ideally, the greater the number of colours, the more prized the gem, and if these are arranged in a block pattern, more value is added. The extremes are pin-sized dots of colour (pinfire) to one large sheet of colour (broadflash) covering the whole stone. The elusive ‘harlequin’ is the ultimate in this form but is very rare. Shapes of the finished opal vary according to the characteristics of each stone. Boulder opal is usually cut in baroque or free form, whereas seam opal is at its best presented in cabochon (domed) form.
If you are buying an unset opal, it is important to consider the way it will eventually be worn. For example, some opals will offer a better play of colour when worn vertically, as in a brooch or pendant, whereas others are best flat, as in a ring setting. There is a great deal to consider when investing in your opal, but expert advice is available for your complete pleasure and pride in an ever-inspiring piece of jewellery. Above all, buy the opal colour that appeals to you. Enjoy your purchase, knowing it’s geologically millions of years old, but will give you pleasure every day of the year. Opals—truly nature’s own fireworks!

Art Hot Blood Not for the faint of heart, “Hot Blood” at Sydney’s White Rabbit Gallery is the most provocative exhibition ever to be held in the space. Drawing on the work of Chinese artists across multiple generations, the exhibition confronts the uncomfortable truths of our age through reinventing art traditions, embracing new technologies and challenging social taboos. Highlights include a giant, house-like installation filled with dancing video game characters and a strangely sensual video involving a fish. Ongoing. Wed–Sun 10am–5pm. White Rabbit Gallery, 30 Balfour Street, Chippendale. whiterabbitcollection.org

WHERE IN SYDNEY
There's arguably never been a better time to be drinking wine in this country. Love, Tilly Devine If there's one name that's synonymous with the vibrant Sydney wine scene, it's Love, Tilly Devine. The wine bar was opened seven years ago with a mission to showcase upcoming Australian winemakers, many of them biodynamic. The 300-strong wine list is almost exclusively Aussie, with the exception of a few international ring-ins. There's also a tightly curated food menu of small items to pair with.
Fix Wine Bar + Restaurant You know you've done something right when your nickname is "The Wine Whisperer". This is Stu Knox, 2012 Sommelier of the Year and founder of Fix Wine Bar + Restaurant. Known for running around the venue in red sneakers handing out samples, Stu is dedicated to showcasing small, handcrafted wines— sometimes natural, sometimes unusual and always delicious. Although wine is taken seriously here, it's also made fun.
Nomad From the most well-known wine regions to far-flung places you've never heard of, expect a comprehensive introduction to Australian winemaking at Nomad. The aim of the venue is to bring a cellar door atmosphere to Surry Hills, meaning you can try the best drops from the hardest to find Australian producers without leaving your bar seat. Best of all, much of the list is by the glass so you can experience as much as possible.
