SYDNEY
The city skyline is unrecognisable this month, glimmering with colour and light as part of the annual Vivid Sydney festival (page 12). If thereʼs one thing you do in the city this month, make sure to take a stroll—whether itʼs through the Botanic Gardens, with its luminescent grass installations; or along Circular Quay to witness the cityʼs icons all ablaze—and see how the festival transforms the landscape. Speaking of beauty, this month we take a look at Sydneyʼs most well-designed venues—from tropical rooftop oases to pubs that feel like walking into an art installation (page 24). As if that wasnʼt enough to keep you occupied, the Sydney Film Festival is also returning to town, with more than 300 local and international fi lms squeezed into just under two weeks. We pick out not-tomiss features, both the blockbusters and the hidden gems (page 8). See you around town!

Q: If you had just one day in Sydney, what would you do?
A: You have to start by seeing the Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge. A stroll through the Royal Botanical Garden Sydney brings you to Mrs Macquarie’s Chair, which provides a stunning backdrop of the skyline. In the afternoon, a ferry ride to Manly beach is definitely a highlight. Finish the day exploring The Rocks and kicking back in one of its many historic pubs or bars. Q: Do you have any top tips for seeing Vivid?
A: Start the night off with a Vivid-inspired cocktail at the West Hotel's own Solander Dining & Bar. Vivid is great to see from the water. I would recommend one of Captain Cook Cruises' Harbour Lights cruises. If you're feeling more adventurous, climb Sydney Harbour Bridge on The Vivid Climb—a truly breathtaking experience.

Q: What is your favourite thing to do as the weather gets colder?
A: I really enjoy checking out the craft beer breweries that have been popping up, many of them in old industrial areas of the inner-west. You can grab a tasting tray of seasonal ales and lagers. My go-tos are Wayward Brewing Co. in Camperdown and The Grifter Brewing Co. in Marrickville.
Q: Where is the best place to pick up an authentic souvenir?
A: The Rocks Markets is a great spot to pick up authentic and handmade souvenirs. If you’re willing to splash out on a unique Australian product, a pair of R.M.Williams boots fit perfectly into a suitcase. Q: If you were spending the weekend out of town, where would you go?
A: The Southern Highlands is very popular with locals and only 90 minutes’ drive south of Sydney. It's a great place to relax and spend the night in one of the charming old historic towns such as Bowral, Berrima or Kangaroo Valley. The area is home to many picturesque landscapes, colourful gardens, culinary delights and, overall, it offers a real sense of escape from city life!

Known Treasures, Hidden Gems
CLOCKWISE FROM TOP: "DIVINE LOVE"; "HONEYLAND"; "THE DEAD DON’T DIE", PHOTO: IMAGE ELEVEN PRODUCTIONS, INC.
Your comprehensive guide to the Sydney Film Festival 2019, from international blockbusters to cult favourites. By Kirsty Sier.
STAR-STUDDED ZOMBIE FILMS, honey-making documentaries with runaway success, journeys to the moon and darkly comedic feminist puppet shows. This year’s Sydney Film Festival program is a wild ride through the depths of cinema, from the heights of Hollywood fame to the quirkier and murkier undercurrents of cult production. Without a guide, reading through the program—which this year features a mindbending 307 films crammed into less than two weeks—can be a bit like sifting for sapphires without a pan. Sure, you’ll probably still leave with some treasured mementos, but you’ll just as likely be plagued by a feeling that you’ve left some gems uncovered. Our guide to the 2019 festival will help you avoid that fate, as we walk you through stand-out hits both big and small.
INTERNATIONAL BLOCKBUSTERS The Dead Don’t Die Director Jim Jarmusch (“Paterson”, “Only Lovers Left Alive”, “Mystery Train”) is known for his starpulling power. For his new zombie flick “The Dead Don’t Die”, a seemingly never-ending list of A-grade celebrities has lined up to play the dead. Bill Murray, Chloë Sevigny, Adam Driver, Iggy Pop, Steve Buscemi, Tilda Swinton, Selena Gomez and Tom Waits are among those who form “the greatest zombie cast ever disassembled”, under Jarmusch’s guidance providing a new and unfailingly hilarious take on a well-trodden genre.
Amazing Grace Speaking of star power, the most moving voice of several generations gets a
well-deserved homage at this year’s festival. “Amazing Grace” is a monument to—and by—Aretha Franklin; a spinetingling 88 minutes of unreleased film from her legendary 1972 concert, which was performed over two days at Los Angeles’ New Temple Missionary Baptist Church. Captured by filmmaker Sydney Pollack, the recording from this concert went on to form Franklin’s most successful album, “Amazing Grace”, but for a number of reasons, the footage was never released. This is the first time the public has had access to this earthshattering moment in music history.
Apollo 11 Another documentary of momentous proportion, “Apollo 11” is the story of the moon landing and its historic consequences. Released to coincide with the 50-year anniversary of Neil Armstrong’s first steps on the moon, “Apollo 11” draws on never-before-seen footage from that day in 1969, plucked out from roughly 11,000 hours of uncatalogued archival material. From the launch pad to Armstrong’s famous words to the tense moments of the rocket’s re-entry, the most crucial events of the time are all relived here in large-format.
HIDDEN GEMS Divine Love Sexy protest movie is not an oxymoron. This is what we learn from “Divine Love”, a film from Brazilian director Gabriel Mascaro, known for his fluorescent, erotic and visually seductive sci-fi films. Taking place in the Brazil of the near future (2027), “Divine Love” is a dystopian

relationship to her daughter and her own self. The cinematography itself is worth the 105 minutes, beautifully capturing the glitz, grime and style of East London.
LOCAL CINEMA Palm Beach
Honeyland Filmed over three years, “Honeyland” follows the story of a 50-something apiarist, Hatidze, living in the remote Macedonian countryside with her frail elderly mother. Less a political documentary on the demise of bees than a funny, intimate and charming character study, “Honeyland” takes place after a large family and their herd of cattle move into the previously empty mountainside beside Hatidze’s cottage. Nascent trust is betrayed, Hatidze’s bees become jeopardised, and the audience is drawn into a tender and empathetic relationship with this ageing beekeeper.

In “Dirty God”, Vicky Knight plays a young mother from East London who was brutally scarred in an acid attack by her ex-boyfriend. Eschewing the easy theme of victimhood, the film is instead one of resilience and self-acceptance, following the self-determined choices of the character—good and bad—as she navigates her changed life, and her evolving
Animals Australian director Sophie Hyde (“52 Tuesdays”) delivers a Sundance favourite with this story of two best friends—played by Alia Shawkat (“Arrested Development”) and Holliday Grainger (“The Borgias”)—who are entering their 30s yet determined to maintain a hedonistic lifestyle of parties, drugs and one-night stands. When a conservative love interest threatens this way of life, the pair are forced to contend with new strains on their relationship—a charismatic bond that is at the heart of why this film is so ceaselessly engaging.
Judy & Punch In the tiny town of Seaside, nowhere near the sea, poverty and boredom are driving citizens to mob rule, violence and god-fearing hysteria. Amidst this chaos, puppeteers Judy (Mia Wasikowska) and Punch (Damon Herriman) attempt to revive their marionette show, the success of which is pulled in opposite directions by separate forces of talent and alcoholism. When an inevitable tragedy occurs, the story transforms into a brutal, darkly-comic and female-led revenge tale as Judy wreaks vengeance on all those who have wronged her—and perhaps a few others.

love story that is particularly affecting not because of its dramatically transformed vision of the world, but because it has been altered only slightly (for instance, with new technologies such as pregnancy-detecting doors). Within this landscape, we are led to the story of a young and devout evangelical couple longing to fulfil their divine duty of procreation. The subsequent journey is an unnerving, compelling and beautiful reflection on faith and sexuality.
The opening night film this year is “Palm Beach”, a funny, uplifting and very Australian family comedy set on the namesake shore. The story is a relatively simple one: a group of lifelong friends reunite for a three-day holiday by the beach, only to have tensions emerge and old secrets come to the fore. This timeworn theme is made engaging once more through witty dialogue, spectacular scenery and a cast that is difficult not to love, featuring Sam Neill, Bryan Brown, Richard E. Grant, Heather Mitchell, Jacqueline McKenzie and Greta Scacchi.

The Australian Interior Design Awards 2019 were announced on May 31 and, as usual, Sydney was well-represented. We take a look at the city’s best-designed venues. By Kirsty Sier.
WE EAT USING MORE SENSES than one. Just as chefs use presentation to enhance a dish, design works in the background—either quietly or boldly—to set the mood of the scene. A successful setting doesn’t have to be overthe-top with theatrics and flourishes; it can be as simple as an ocean-front venue that opens up to the views and takes advantage of the landscape. Or, in the depths of the city, it can be a moody space that distils the grit of the setting into a controlled experience. In short, good design is about storytelling, capable of putting you— the guest—at the heart of the tale. Sydney is a city that is full of stories: from the laid-back salty-dog vibe of its eastern suburbs, to the punk-pop colour of its inner-west, to the CBD, where the polished office crowd meets the sensory grunge of street culture. In celebration of the recent Australian Interior Design Awards 2019—an event that showcases the best design storytelling from around Australia, and one in which Sydney always ranks highly—we take a look at some of the best-designed venues around the city: from Mexican-inspired colourscapes, to dark-panelled cafés that channel the Orient Express, to intimate cocktail bars that would make the Rat Pack proud.
25
THE DOLPHIN HOTEL, SURRY HILLS The three individual spaces that comprise The Dolphin Hotel—public bar, dining room and wine room—were originally used to house a series of art projects. The pub element was initially designed as a pop-up by architect George Livissianis and artists Beni Single and Tracey Deep; a space draped with white fabric, strewn with graffiti and installed with dim golden lighting. At some point, it was decided that The Dolphin Hotel would remain permanent, but the design makes it look as if it is in a perpetual state of installation. The venue complements its creative décor with an inventive yet familiar menu of Italian twists, such as hand-stretched pizza, chunky polenta chips and Venetian Spritzes. Don’t miss a trip upstairs to Scout Bar, an offshoot of the London bar by Matt Whiley, which is consistently voted within the World’s 50 Best Bars. 412 Crown Street, Surry Hills. dolphinhotel.com.au

SAKÉ RESTAURANT AND BAR MANLY, MANLY Saké Manly is the sixth outpost of the high-end Japanese restaurant, which has now expanded into Melbourne. Despite its expansive footprint, Saké Manly doesn’t feel like a chain, and that’s mostly because of the design by Luchetti Krelle. The venue is both upmarket and relaxed, drawing heavily on the local area for a distinct, breezy harbourside atmosphere. Natural materials such as stone, timber and dried flowers have been used throughout— for instance, the giant, rough-surfaced boulder that greets you at the entrance. But the star of the show is the harbour, which is showcased through huge floor-toceiling windows that run the length of the dining room, and mirrors that reflect it from the opposite end of the venue. This light-filled, view-saturated restaurant is the perfect place to experience the seaside lifestyle that

The Grounds of Alexandria fast became one of Sydney’s most-trafficked cafés when it opened in 2012, transforming a former industrial pocket of the innersuburbs into a lively foodie destination. Whereas the original venue had the benefits of wideopen areas and garden plots (even including a pig pen with a resident named Kevin Bacon), the second
outpost in the CBD didn’t have that luxury of space. But just as The Grounds of Alexandria transports you out of its industrial setting into a bucolic homestead, The Grounds of the City—designed by design firm Acme & Co.—plucks you from the city centre and places you on the Orient Express, complete with ornate timber joinery, studded plush pink bar stools, and old-world leather booth seating with ambient under-glow lighting. Ostensibly an innercity café, this venue is particularly amazing for how much it can do within its relatively small pocket. Come here for eggs and coffee, stay for dashi oysters and champagne, and polish it all off with one of their house cakes. Shop RG 12, 500 George Street, Sydney. thegrounds.com.au

PARAGON HOTEL ROOFTOP, CIRCULAR QUAY On the other hand, Paragon Hotel Rooftop in Circular Quay is a venue that recreates the breeziness of a small beach setting in the middle of a dense inner-city pocket. Located on the rooftop of the iconic Paragon Hotel, the Tzannesdesigned alfresco bar is all plants, pastels and plain sky. Halfway between a pool bar in Fiji and your very stylish friend’s courtyard, the space is scattered with outdoor furniture in a variety of bright colours and plush materials, including one very comfortable pink armchair. Although guests have sweeping views of the city below, noise levels remain peaceful thanks to greenery that drapes over every available surface, including planted green walls and a ceiling thick with foliage. Serving every cocktail you could possibly think of as well as a variety of share plates, there’s no better place in the city to while away an entire day. Cnr Alfred and Loftus Streets, Circular Quay. hotelparagon.com.au
FONDA MEXICAN, BONDI BEACH The first interstate offshoot of Melbourne’s bright and contemporary Fonda Mexican restaurant chain, Fonda Mexican in Bondi channels the young, modern, blockcolour-heavy theme that ties the brand together without
compromising Sydney’s distinct coastal appeal. Designed by so-hot-right-now Australian design firm Studio Esteta, the colour scheme of Fonda Mexican in Bondi is the standout feature of the design. Somewhere between desert and beach, burnt orange coats the walls and sea-blue leather bench seats snake around the perimeter. The atmosphere is cosy, designed to channel the Fonda ethos of “mi casa, su casa”, and the menu is fresh and unpretentious. Come for the market-fresh fish burritos, heaped bowls of rustic tortilla chips with salsa and zingy frozen margaritas. 85 Hall Street, Bondi Beach. fondamexican.com.au
MAYBE SAMMY, THE ROCKS Credited with delivering a rebirth of cool to The Rocks, Maybe Sammy is a new and intimate cocktail bar that channels all the glitz, glamour and seduction of 1950s Las Vegas to this harbourside pocket, long devoid of fresh hospitality openings. Although tiny, the bar punches big, with an aim to pay homage to the Rat Pack (the “Sammy” in the name is Sammy Davis Jr.). The suave design is evident in the brass finishes, the palm-leaf wallpaper, the velvet benches, the curved marble bar and the slickhaired staff sporting double-breasted dinner jackets and sly smiles. Tip: don’t leave here without having tried something from the cocktail menu, influenced by creative director Andrea Gualdi, who took out 2017 Australian Bartender of the Year. 115 Harrington Street, The Rocks. maybesammy.com

SYDNEY’S ICONIC HARBOUR has pretty much seen it all since Lieutenant James Cook arrived aboard the Endeavour in 1770 and named it Port Jackson. The first settlers set up camp here in 1788 and the harbour has been an important part of city life ever since, used for transportation and recreation. Little wonder it is widely regarded as the greatest leisure harbour in the world. On any given day, the harbour is alive with boats of all shapes and sizes, be it passenger ferries, state-of-the-art yachts or kayakers. This is particularly true during the traditional Boxing Day launch of the Rolex Sydney to Hobart yacht race, when hundreds of craft follow the racers out of the harbour. And on New Year’s Eve, there’s no better spot to be than on a boat beneath the Sydney Harbour Bridge

Australian opal is not only the world’s most fascinating and colourful gemstone, it can also be a sound long-term investment.
Fire from the Outback CALLED ‘THE RAINBOW STONE’ by Australia’s Aboriginal people, opal is without doubt one of nature’s most remarkable gifts. It is now recognised as one of the five precious gemstones in the world, along with diamonds, emeralds, rubies and sapphires, and is an excellent investment. While small amounts of opals may be found in other countries such as Ethiopia, Mexico and the USA, Australia produces more than 90 per cent of the world’s supply. The romance of the opal is in the gem’s incredible ability to expose an infinite number of colours, forever moving with the light. Mined in the outback of Australia across three states, it is as much the call of the outback that lures the opal miner

and keeps them going. Scorched landscapes and blazing red sunsets, the night stars from horizon to horizon, this is a hauntingly beautiful country that penetrates one’s soul. The elusive opal was formed millions of years ago when liquid silica filtered down into the faults and fissures of sedimentary rock. When the water content evaporated, tiny spheres of silica remained and over time were solidified. The intensity and combination of colour occur with such variety that each gem has an individual character. In 1964 the CSIRO (Australia’s national research laboratories) unlocked the riddle of why opals have such colours. Opal is composed of minute particles of silica in closely packed
spherical aggregates. It is the varying arrangement of these particles (and, of course, cavities) that causes the reflected light to be split into the full range of colours of the spectrum. There are three main production areas in Australia for mining opals. There’s the bright and beautiful Queensland boulder opal which is mined around the Quilpie area in Western Queensland. Lightning Ridge in New South Wales is the home of the famous black opal which derives its name from the colour of the nobbies or pieces of rough opal in which the gems are usually found. The third area is Coober Pedy and Mintabie in South Australia. Coober Pedy is an Aboriginal name, meaning ‘white man in a hole’, which describes

exactly what miners still do today— live underground to escape the fierce heat of summer. This is where the white or milk opals are mined. The value of an opal depends on the amount and brilliance of the colour, preferably being evenly distributed across the face of the polished gem. The greater the spectrum of colours from red to violet, the better, with crimson, reds and orange being rarer than the greens and blues. Milkiness, cloudiness or greyness detracts from the value. Ideally, the greater the number of colours, the more prized the gem,
and if these are arranged in a block pattern, more value is added. The extremes are pin-sized dots of colour (pinfire) to one large sheet of colour (broadflash) covering the whole stone. The elusive ‘harlequin’ is the ultimate in this form but is very rare. Shapes of the finished opal vary according to the characteristics of each stone. Boulder opal is usually cut in baroque or free form, whereas seam opal is at its best presented in cabochon (domed) form. If you are buying an unset opal, it is important to consider the way it will eventually be worn. For example, some opals will offer a better play of
colour when worn vertically, as in a brooch or pendant, whereas others are best flat, as in a ring setting. There is a great deal to consider when investing in your opal, but expert advice is available for your complete pleasure and pride in an ever-inspiring piece of jewellery. Above all, buy the opal colour that appeals to you. Enjoy your purchase, knowing it’s geologically millions of years old, but will give you pleasure every day of the year. Opals—truly nature’s own fireworks!

Lord Nelson Brewery As Australia's oldest pub brewery, the Lord Nelson in Sydney's The Rocks precinct is a bit of an icon. It is also an old hand at braving the seasons, which is why there are people spilling out from its doors come rain or shine. Inside you'll find a huge tap roster of award-winning beers, upmarket pub food (including a regular menu and a separate Tuesday night curry menu) and a crackling fireplace to warm your knuckles.
The Oaks Hotel Another Sydney icon, The Oaks Hotel in Neutral Bay is a playground for adults (where kids are also welcome). Named for the grand old Oak Tree that sits in the centre of its fairy-lit courtyard, the pub is filled with various bar areas and nooks to get lost in. The Garden Bar is a beautiful old-wordly bar hemmed in by glass windows overlooking the courtyard. A fireplace keeps you warm while you enjoy the garden views.
The Lord Dudley Hotel Even if you've never been to The Lord Dudley Hotel, there's something about it that feels like home. Opened in 1896, the pub is Sydney's answer to Britain's famed cosy locals, complete with polished timber bar strewn with old beer mugs. The venue is filled with well-worn memorabilia and sinking armchairs, hearty British fare such as Sunday roast with all the trimmings, and a fireplace to complete the warm sense of welcome.
