SYDNEY
From belly laughs to shirt-expanding feasts, it’s all about the stomach this month in Sydney. The annual foodie dream, Good Food Month— returns with all the tried-and-tested favourites, such as the Night Noodle Markets in Hyde Park—and an impressive roster of one-off events and international chef visits (page 14). Attracting a similar calibre of talent in a different area of expertise, the Just For Laughs festival brings juggernauts of comedy to venues throughout the city (page 12). Formidable headliners this year include caustic icon Dylan Moran and Saturday Night Live alum Fred Armisen. And speaking of formidable, the inimitable international circus troupe Cirque de Soleil lands in town this month to open the colossal new production of “Kurios” (page 10). Finally, in this issue we share a list of the best places in Sydney for visitors travelling solo (page 20). Enjoy!

PERFORMANCE
THE WHARF REVUE A side-splitting solution to the world’s problems. THE WORLD HAS MANY PROBLEMS—the west is crumbling, democracy is besieged and morons with funny hair are running the world. But sometimes, all you can do is laugh. This is the driving mantra behind “The Wharf Revue”, an annual comedy production held by Sydney’s premier performance institution, Sydney Theatre Company. The indefatigable comedy team behind the show is once again brought to the stage to share side-splitting and (hopefully) cathartic impressions of the year’s most memorable characters and the moments in history they’d likely rather forget. Until October 26. Roslyn Packer Theatre, 22 Hickson Road, Walsh Bay. sydneytheatre.com.au

MOZART’S COMEDY Opera Australia tackles “The Marriage of Figaro”. "The Marriage of Figaro" is the opera that has it all: lovers and liaisons, disguises and tricks, lust and laughter. The classic comedy, originally scored by Mozart, combines fast-moving libretto with melodic and charming writing to tell the story of tangled aristocratic ties. The love square at the centre of the narrative involves the Countess, who loves the Count, who loves his pretty servant Susanna, whose wedding day it is. Needless to say her groom, Figaro, has no intention of giving up his bride. From October 18. Sydney Opera House, Bennelong Point, Sydney. opera.org.au

Primavera 2019 It's hard to say whether "Primavera" is more of an examination of young Australian artists, or a launching pad for new talent. Showcasing work from exciting Australian artists under the age of 35, the annual group exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA) invites a different curator each year to select artists who they feel represent current trends and the emerging styles of the next generation. Flying Solo CLOCKWISE FROM TOP: ROYAL BOTANIC GARDEN SYDNEY, PHOTO: JAMES HORAN. CENTENNIAL PARKLANDS. THE ART GALLERY OF NSW.
A guide to Sydney for the intrepid solo traveller. By Kirsty Sier.
THERE’S MUCH TO BE SAID for travelling alone. Holiday time is limited and has a habit of moving faster than you want it to—and you know what they say about the best-laid plans. No matter how organised you are, there are only so many sights and experiences and afternoon cocktails that you can fit into the narrow window of leisure. These limitations become so much more pronounced when you are trying to perform a juggling act of co-travellers’ competing interests. On the other hand, travelling as an intrepid solo act can feel more conspicuous. Accidentally stumbling into a café filled exclusively with families, or into a bar or restaurant populated by doe-eyed couples and rowdy parties of 10 is… fine, but also not great for your ideal bout of drawn-out relaxation. There are many things to do in Sydney that are arguably best enjoyed in your own company. Here are a few of them.
ART GALLERIES Every gallery-goer exists at a different point on the spectrum of “reading every word of every wall plaque” to “using the exhibition as a personal speed-walking track”. You can spend a lifetime trying to find your perfect gallery match, but best of all is cruising through an exhibition at your own pace without worrying about speeding up or slowing down to match the company. White Rabbit Gallery in Chippendale is a particularly good one for the solo traveller, with its hyper-contemporary exhibitions ranging from traditional media to digital technologies that invite singular focus and immersion. The Art Gallery of NSW is massive, containing a huge range of exhibition spaces and often playing host to several large-scale shows at once—
a maze of decisions easier to navigate on an individual whim. Similarly, the Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA) is a multi-level cacophony of constantly rotating exhibitions designed to engage different tastes. Choose what interests you and get wandering. White Rabbit Gallery, 30 Balfour Street, Chippendale. jnprojects.net Art Gallery of NSW, Art Gallery Road, Sydney. artgallery.nsw.gov.au MCA, 140 George Street, The Rocks. mca.com.au
PARKS AND GARDENS Peace and quiet are two of the infinite resources available to the solo traveller. And where better to make use of them than in one of Sydney’s many sprawling, inner-city parklands? The obvious choice is the Royal Botanic Garden Sydney, which combines lush flora and ancient tree canopies with sparkling harbour views, contemporary dining options and the option to jump in on the various tours, workshops and events regularly run by staff. Centennial Parklands is big enough to have its own rangers, cycling and horseriding tracks, and a cluster of ponds in addition to a seemingly limitless lawn on which to sit and daydream. Peak serenity can be found at the Chinese Garden of Friendship, a surprise walled oasis tucked away next to Darling Harbour. Stroll along serene pathways next to koi-filled ponds, sit beneath swaying willow trees and find restoration in the heritage-listed teahouse where dumplings and a range of traditional teas abound. But solo travelling isn’t all about quiet contemplation; it can also present a perfect opportunity to meet new people and learn new skills. One skill that Sydney specialises in teaching is surfing. Manly Surf School is arguably the best place for beginners to learn: a combination of experienced coaches and gentle surf conditions. For the foodies among us, Taste Cultural Food Tours conduct a range of food expeditions that focus on the rather enjoyable activity of tasting the unique melting pot of multinational cuisines in Sydney. Manly Surf School, 93–95 N Steyne, Manly. manlysurfschool.com Taste Cultural Food Tours, various locations. tastetours.com.au
BOOKSTORES A solo traveller’s best friend? Obviously a good book. Unsurprisingly, there are many of these to be found within the largest bookstore in the Southern Hemisphere, Sydney’s own Books Kinokuniya. Taking up an entire level of The Galeries shopping complex, this bookstore is a lit-buff fantasy, comprising endless shelves of fiction and non-fiction, a comic books section, a room dedicated to art and design books, a stationary store and Chinese- and Japanese-language books departments. A more boutique production, Ariel Booksellers is a light-filled, design-savvy store in Darlinghurst with a neatly curated selection of new releases, cult classics and irresistible coffee table books.

The hardest part of travelling sans-company is finding somewhere to eat. Communal tables and bar seating are good ways to avoid the awkward luxury of space that comes from venues that seem to be comprised entirely of six-person booths. If you’re craving family-style comfort, Emma’s Snack Bar has got what you need. The Lebanese restaurant in Sydney’s inner-west is a casual eatery with big, homecooked flavours and a lively communal table that extends up the middle of the space. Closer to the city, Restaurant Hubert is for those looking to treat themselves. The hatted French restaurant is fine dining that relies as much on its ultra-refined dishes as it does on soft interior ambience. Part of this is achieved by tables that are arranged so that even on fully booked nights—which is most nights—diners are still afforded an element of privacy and a sense of space. One of the venues that is credited with pioneering the communal dining concept in Sydney is Bill’s, the Surry Hills icon founded by Bill Granger. It is also the original and still-quintessential Sydney brunch spot—additionally credited with launching the avocado toast craze, and still doing one of the city’s best versions of it—and is open into the evening seven nights a week for dinner and drinks. Sea and the City e ta lar firewor s a world a o s o era o se and an o ean ll o w ales SYDNEY’S ICONIC HARBOUR has pretty much seen it all since Lieutenant James Cook arrived aboard the Endeavour in 1770 and named it Port Jackson. The first settlers set up camp here in 1788 and the harbour has been an important part of city life ever since, used for transportation and recreation. Little wonder it is widely regarded as the greatest leisure harbour in the world. On any given day, the harbour is alive with boats of all shapes and sizes, be it passenger ferries, state-of-the-art yachts or kayakers.

This is particularly true during the traditional Boxing Day launch of the Rolex Sydney to Hobart yacht race, when hundreds of craft follow the racers out of the harbour. And on New Year’s Eve, there’s no better spot to be than on a boat beneath the Sydney Harbour Bridge as breathtaking fireworks displays take place in the skies above. While the Harbour Bridge and Sydney Opera House are its two most famous landmarks, the harbour has plenty more sights up its sleeve. Circular Quay, Luna Park and Anzac Bridge are all accessible and visible from the water along with hundreds of bays, coves, beaches and waterways. Several islands can also be found in the harbour, the most notable being Fort Denison, Shark Island and Cockatoo Island. With so much to see and do, it pays to plan ahead— and there is no shortage of options. Multi-award-winning Captain Cook Cruises offers premium dining and sightseeing. The Harbour Story cruise combines premium sightseeing with the stories of Sydney’s most fascinating characters every day at 10am and 2.15pm from Circular Quay. Upgrade to the premium package including a glass of sparkling wine, morning/afternoon tea selection and coffee to order. The company’s flagships Sydney 2000 and John Cadman 2 take Sydney Harbour dining to an impressive level. A comprehensive range of lunch, high tea and dinner options operate daily with a choice of contemporary Australian buffet, à la carte, and six-course degustation menus. Once a month, lunch on Sydney Harbour turns gold. Hosted by Captain Cook Cruises in partnership with Australia's finest food and wine producers, the Gold Lunch is a unique dining experience. The cruise includes a seasonal six-course menu and a superior beverage selection. The southern migration of humpback whales is in full swing, meaning curious whales coming right up to boats to say hello. With more than 25 years’ experience and a fleet of custom-built whale-watching vessels, a Whale Watching Sydney cruise—departing daily from Darling Harbour or Circular Quay—is the obvious choice for the experience of a lifetime.
The three-hour Discovery Cruise takes you on Sydney’s largest purpose-built whale-watching boat, ensuring a comfortable ride over three levels with wrap-around decks. For thrill-seekers, the two-hour Adventure Cruise takes you on a 27-seat high-speed craft. Both cruises reach whales in lightning speed, with a 99 per cent success rate or your next cruise free. The My Fast Ferry 2 Day Hop On Hop Off Pass gives you access to the best of Sydney Harbour: Manly, Darling Harbour, Watsons Bay, Taronga Zoo, Quarantine Station, Circular Quay, Pyrmont Bay and Milsons Point. It is the only Hop On Hop Off Pass that also includes unlimited travel on Manly Fast Ferry, which takes you from Circular Quay to Manly in only 18 minutes. Nature’s Own Fireworks Australian opal is not only the world’s most fascinating and colourful gemstone, it can also be a sound long-term investment.
CALLED ‘THE RAINBOW STONE’ by Australia’s Aboriginal people, opal is without doubt one of nature’s most remarkable gifts. It is now recognised as one of the five precious gemstones in the world, along with diamonds, emeralds, rubies and sapphires, and is an excellent investment. While small amounts of opals may be found in other countries such as Ethiopia, Mexico and the USA, Australia produces more than 90 per cent of the world’s supply. The romance of the opal is in the gem’s incredible ability to expose an infinite number of colours, forever moving with the light. Mined in the outback of Australia across three states, it is as much the call of the outback that lures the opal miner and keeps them going. Scorched landscapes and blazing red sunsets, the night stars from horizon to horizon, this is a hauntingly beautiful country that penetrates one’s soul.

WHE RE I OCTO B E R 2019
The elusive opal was formed millions of years ago when liquid silica filtered down into the faults and fissures of sedimentary rock. When the water content evaporated, tiny spheres of silica remained and over time were solidified. The intensity and combination of colour occur with such variety that each gem has an individual character. In 1964 the CSIRO (Australia’s national research laboratories) unlocked the riddle of why opals have such colours. Opal is composed of minute particles of silica in closely packed spherical aggregates. It is the varying arrangement of these particles (and, of course, cavities) that causes the reflected light to be split into the full range of colours of the spectrum. There are three main production areas in Australia for mining opals. There’s the bright and beautiful Queensland boulder opal which is mined around the Quilpie area in Western Queensland.
The intensity and combination of colour occur with such variety that each gem has an individual character.
Lightning Ridge in New South Wales is the home of the famous black opal which derives its name from the colour of the nobbies or pieces of rough opal in which the gems are usually found. The third area is Coober Pedy and Mintabie in South Australia. Coober Pedy is an Aboriginal name, meaning ‘white man in a hole’, which describes exactly what miners still do today: live underground to escape the fierce heat of summer. This is where the white or milk opals are mined. The value of an opal depends on the amount and brilliance of the colour, preferably being evenly distributed across the face of the polished gem. The greater the spectrum of colours from red to violet, the better, with crimson, reds and orange being rarer than the greens and blues. Milkiness, cloudiness or greyness detract from the value.
Ideally, the greater the number of colours, the more prized the gem, and if these are arranged in a block pattern, more value is added. The extremes are pin-sized dots of colour (pinfire) to one large sheet of colour (broadflash) covering the whole stone. The elusive ‘harlequin’ is the ultimate in this form but is very rare. Shapes of the finished opal vary according to the characteristics of each stone. Boulder opal is usually cut in baroque or free form, whereas seam opal is at its best presented in cabochon (domed) form.
If you are buying an unset opal, it is important to consider the way it will eventually be worn. For example, some opals will offer a better play of colour when worn vertically, as in a brooch or pendant, whereas others are best flat, as in a ring setting. There is a great deal to consider when investing in your opal, but expert advice is available for your complete pleasure and pride in an ever-inspiring piece of jewellery. Above all, buy the opal colour that appeals to you. Enjoy your purchase, knowing it’s geologically millions of years old, but will give you pleasure every day of the year. Take a seat at one of the bright communal picnic tables, or have a game of table tennis. From Railway Square, Ultimo to Darling Harbour. WENDY’S SECRET GARDEN
Hidden away in beautiful Lavender Bay, the garden was created by Wendy Whiteley, wife of the late Australian painter Brett Whiteley. In the aftermath of her husband’s passing, Wendy put all her effort and grief into clearing the overgrown land near her home. Employing a painterly aesthetic, the garden design was driven by colour. Today it remains a spectacular testament to Wendy, with its lush greenery and beautiful views that offer a sense of peace and tranquillity. Lavender Street, Lavender Bay. wendyssecretgarden.org.au

With dark mahogany finishes and soft ambient lighting, 360 Bar and Dining provides a breathtaking setting high above Sydney. Middle Eastern Occupying more than half the rooftop space of Westfield Sydney, Babylon is a sprawling Middle Eastern eatery that is more akin to a food emporium than it is to a standard restaurant. The venue comprises a number of different dining and bar settings: a 216-seat restaurant, two large bars, a wood-fired kitchen, indoor/outdoor dining, a large outdoor terrace, and multiple private and semi-private dining spaces. The menu itself is led by head chef Arman Uz, who splits the rich flavours of Levantine cuisine into the categories of flora, fauna and ocean. Many of the dishes are cooked over wood and charcoal. DUCK & RICE
Cantonese The neighbour to Babylon on the rooftop of Westfield Sydney, Duck & Rice completes the drinkand-dine playground on the shopping centre's upper level. The rugged flavours and textures of Cantonese cuisine carry the menu, which does justice to the venue name with its signature dish of juicy, crisp-skinned roast duck, available in either half or full serves and accompanied by small bowls of sweetsavoury plum sauce. Flavour, texture and colour form the unifying trifecta across dishes that range from multi-coloured steamer baskets of dumplings and dim sum, to silky noodles, to sizzling stir-fries and desserts such as creamy-crunchy fried ice cream. The atmosphere is one of fitting decadence, with interiors inspired by the traditional Chinese and art deco styles that dominated Hong Kong and Shanghai during the 1930s. The elegant, moody and modern interiors of Duck & Rice feature warm timber textures, marble and plenty of gold trim, while the outdoor dining setting is comprised of a glowing lantern canopy. Scene Bondi Icebergs Turns 90 Not only a local but an international landmark, the Bondi Icebergs Club was first opened in 1929 by a group of local lifesavers who wanted to keep their fitness up during the winter months. These days, it is a destination—as much for locals using its swimming facilities as for visitors making good use of views from the Clubhouse restaurant and bar. The epitome of comfort food, there's not much better than a carbloaded base topped with a variety of meats, vegetables of cheeses. There are many ways to do pizza, from the simple to the gourmet. Here are three of Sydney's best takes on a classic. For more great pizza around Sydney visit wheretraveller.com

Fratelli Fresh At Fratelli Fresh, the menu is expansive, the produce is fresh, the flavours are simple and the portions are generous. Since it first opened in Waterloo, the brand has grown to encompass six separate restaurants throughout Sydney. Although each of these has its own unique appeal—the Darling Harbour venue, for instance, with its Aperol bar and giant games room—the focus on authentic flavours and fresh produce is the same. Various locations. fratellifresh.com.au
Pizza Madre Pizza gets an Australian twist at Pizza Madre, a tiny corner-store operation churning out some of the most perfect pizza bases in the city. Their sourdough bases are made using all-Australian and sustainably grown flours, and the toppings that are added to them are all vegetarian. Although the menu changes seasonally, diners can always expect top-quality produce in simple yet imaginative combinations. 2/205 Victoria Road, Marrickville. pizzamadre.com.au
Bella Brutta An antidote to fast-food pizza, the newly opened Bella Brutta is serious business. The venue is a co-production by some of Sydney's most wellrespected fine dining chefs, whose idea of pizza-making involves crisp bases with oven-blistered edges and an uncomprising focus on high-quality ingredients. These are used in both classic and iconoclastic combinations—from the age-old pepperoni to a clam pizza with fermented chilli and toasted garlic oil. 135 King Street, Newtown. bellabrutta.com.au
