RNLI LOOKING FOR VOLUNTEERS TO ADD TO THEIR SHOP AND MUSEUM TEAMS Whitby’s RNLI shop and museum, which can be found opposite the Bandstand at the entrance to the pier, are keen to recruit volunteers. Barrie Lazenby, the shop manager, would like potential volunteers to get in touch and help keep the popular shop and museum, open throughout the week over the busy summer months. The RNLI shop in Whitby is one of the best performing shops in the country, and Barrie and his team would like this to continue. If the museum has to shorten its opening hours due to a lack of volunteers, it gives less opportunity for visitors to the town to buy RNLI gifts and souvenirs, the profits of which provide the much-needed funds to save lives at sea.

The roles are voluntary and part-time and would suit a friendly person who wishes to meet like-minded people and enjoys chatting to the public as lots of visitors as well as regulars who support the RNLI year-on-year come into the shop and museum. A good team of enthusiastic volunteers will enable the shop to be open every day for the busy summer season and so keep raising money for the lifesaving charity - funds to keep lifeboat crews safe and to save lives. If anyone is curious about volunteering, they are encouraged to call in and have a look around the shop and see how lovely it is, as well as the museum, and chat to the volunteers on duty and discover what a great place it is to work. Even just offering a few hours a week would be a great help! More information about the role can be found at RNLI.org/Volunteer. 8

COVID GUIDANCE TO CONTINUE IN GP PRACTICES AND OTHER HEALTHCARE SETTINGS GP practices in North Yorkshire and York will be keeping COVID-secure arrangements in place when restrictions elsewhere are eased on Monday (19 July). All staff and patients are being asked to continue to wear a suitable face covering and comply with social distancing and hand hygiene guidance as before. Practices will continue to offer a blended mix of face-to-face, telephone and virtual appointments – with face-to-face appointments prioritised for those who need to be seen in person. NHS England announced yesterday (Thursday) that patients would be expected to wear a suitable face covering and observe social distancing rules when accessing all healthcare settings – including dentists and pharmacies – with hospital trusts in the region also confirming there would be no changes to their COVID-secure arrangements. Dr Bruce Willoughby, NHS North Yorkshire Clinical Commissioning Group Governing Body Member, said: “GP practices have been seeing patients face-to-face in a COVID-safe way throughout the coronavirus pandemic.

ARE YOU OVER 50 & WEAR GLASSES? IF SO I URGE YOU TO READ THIS... Since the national roll out of the COVID vaccinations I have seen an increase in the number of my patients coming back for their eye test. Many have been overdue since COVID first struck, well over a year ago. Your eyes are so delicate, so important and yet you are likely to take them for granted. I did! Just being overdue an eye test by 12 months can make a big difference to your eye health. A lot of things can happen inside your eyes with each passing year. If you are over 50, looking after your eyes becomes more important than ever as you are more at risk of eye problems. I am seeing an increase in the number of people who are unnecessarily suffering from eye conditions that can lead to blindness such as Glaucoma and retinal detachments, simply because they did not get their eyes tested in time. You may think your vision is good and you don’t need an eye test. But an eye test is more than a vision check. I do a very detailed health check on your eyes using the Optomap (I will explain more in a sec). You see, there are many eye diseases that don’t cause any symptoms, no pain and no vision problems. But they can be there lurking inside you eyes, and if left undetected can suddenly cause complete vision loss. That is why I have the “Optomap” ultrawide retinal scanner, at my Opticians. Not even James Cook Hospital has this machine. It can save your vision and even your life. Many Opticians offer retinal photography but this only sees around 45 degrees of your retina (the important part inside your eye). My Optomap sees 200 degrees, over 4X more!

20

What does this mean to you? Just the other day, my sister Victoria who is the Optician at the Skelton branch did an eye test for a man who booked just for a routine check. The Optomap spotted 3 holes (see picture) in his retina that would not have been seen with a standard eye test! He had emergency eye surgery which saved his vision. Another few days and he could have been blind. If you are over 60 the NHS only offer a basic eye test that does not include checks like this and you can only have a routine eye test once every 2 years but a lot can happen in 2 years. That’s why I offer the Eyeplan where you can get yearly (not 2 yearly!) eye tests with unlimited comprehensive eye exams, including Optomap scans, priority appointments and emergency appointments. For your complete peace of mind with the Optomap eye exam please see the next page As you saw with the picture of the 3 holes in the retina with the Optomap scan, this image saved a man’s vision. The Optomap has also spotted cancer in the eye that has saved not just someones’ vision but also their life. If you choose your Optician based on “buy one get one free” offers then stop reading this now. If you choose your Optician based on the amount of care and attention to your eye health and vision then read on. You only have one set of eyes to last your lifetime. That’s why I am offering the Optomap Eyeplan. With this you don’t need to wait 2 years for a routine eye test, you get direct access to an Optician whenever you need, you get a yearly enhanced eye exam, priority and emergency appointments and access to the Optomap technology that not even James Cook Hospital has! How much would you pay for this complete peace of mind eye care? My Eyeplan service starts from £7 per month, £1.62 per week, around the cost of a loaf of Warburtons! Until August 31st, use the voucher on the next page to get a £50 glasses voucher when you join the Optomap Eyeplan. If you would like more information on my Eyeplan, including a free copy of my book and report on 7 ways to look after your eyes, simply request this by calling my recorded message service 24/7 on 01287 646001. If you want to book for the Optomap eye test at my Loftus or Skelton branch call 01287 646000 today.

YORKSHIRE LOFT LADDERS, QUALITY YOU CAN TRUST!

These days most homeowners suffer from a lack of storage space. So many precious items that need to be kept – but where to store it all? That’s where Yorkshire Loft Ladders come in. The company, based locally, offers homeowners the opportunity to maximise their storage space with a loft ladder, 50 sq ft of boarding and a light all fully fitted in less than a day from just £277 + VAT. But it’s not just the affordability of the package the company offers that makes Yorkshire Loft Ladders stand out as manager Mark Hodson explains:

‘Our watchwords are Quality, Integrity and Value. Quality in the materials that we use for all our installations and the fact that all our loft packages are fitted by time served tradesmen so our customers are assured of the best job. Integrity in that we will turn up at the time we say and make sure the house is spotless when we leave, and Value in that we offer our services at a price people can afford.

Our business relies on referrals and we got a huge amount of our calls from people who have been referred to us by our existing customers - that simply wouldn’t happen if we didn’t adhere to our overriding principles.

At the end of the day the old adage that happy customers lead to more happy customers is true and we work hard to make that happen for every installation we carry out!’ So, if you want to make use of your loft space, however big or small, call Mark on 0800 612 8359 and he’ll be happy to pop round and give you a no obligation quote so you too can make use of your loft!

BECK VETS OFFER A FULL RANGE OF CLINICS FOR YOUR PET

Here at the Beck Veterinary practice our nurses offer a range of consultations that you might not even realise are available! Weight clinics

• This is a free service we offer to help you get your pet back to a healthy weight.

• A few little tweaks to your daily routine can be all it takes to help manage your pet’s weight. • We weigh your pet and measure their neck and tummy to help visually see results next time you come in. • We can work with the food you already feed or recommend which food for you to use. Our nurses will be able to offer useful tips for exercising and healthier treat alternatives (did you know dogs often love carrots?). • Our team are very understanding of different situations and aware it’s not always easy to change your routines. • After your first initial consultation we usually ask you to return within 4-6 weeks for your next weigh-in.

• Our first 10 new slimmers will be offered a half price bag of Hills Metabolic food which is a highly recommended food to help kick start your pets weight loss! Nail Trims

• Our nurses are on hand daily to trim your pet’s nails no matter what the species! • Call up and book in for a day which suits you. Flea and Wormer checks

• Most of these medications need an up-to-date weight to ensure your pet receives the right cover for parasites.

• Several over-the-counter medications are not very effective and in many cases no use at all – it is always recommended you get your flea and worming treatment from your veterinary practice. • Our nurses are happy to administer or apply the medication also if needed – we know they can be a little tricky! Dental Check

• A visual check of your pet’s teeth – we can offer advice and demonstrations on tooth brushing along with other products you might find useful. 62

Introduction to the practice clinics • Come into the clinic with your pet before their first injection or other essential appointment, we will give them lots of fuss and attention without any medications or injections involved. • This will hopefully set in your pet’s mind that coming to the vets is not a scary experience. • You can take this opportunity to chat with the nurse about any questions or concerns you may have while you pet is left to relax and feel at ease in this new environment. Patient confidence and cooperation clinics • These clinics are to help a nervous patient build confidence with the practice, staff and to train through the common problems we see e.g. nervous for injections, nail trims, ear examinations. • We understand how upsetting this can be for you as an owner too and want to help. • This clinic is recommended in a 6-week block – one half an hour session per week with the same member of staff. Progress will be much quicker if you can dedicate time to the training at home too, short sessions several times a week which we will guide you on. For any help or advice with your pet please do not hesitate to give us a call on 01947 820333, we are available 24/7 for any pet emergencies.
