CO-OP LAUNCHES NEW LOOK WHITBY STORE AFTER £1.8 MILLION MAKEOVER

The Co-op launched its new look store in Whitby in September following a £1.8 million makeover. The store on Langborne Road was refurbished during the summer months and staff worked really hard so that the store stayed open throughout, allowing residents and visitors to the town to still do their shopping. The Mayor of Whitby, Linda Wild, a local resident and loyal customer cut the ribbon to launch the new store on Thursday 2 September.

At the refreshed store, you can still find all the things you value - not only the usual fresh fruit and vegetables, seasonal favourites, everyday essentials, Fairtrade and big name brands at a great price, but also an extensive range of fresh, healthy products, award-winning wines, ready meals and pizzas, free-from, vegan and plantbased products. There is also a delicious bakery section where a great range of bread, buns and beautiful cakes can be found, all freshly made in our instore bakery along with a choice of hot food savouries and a simple-to-use Costa Express coffee machine, so you can still pick up a cup of your favourite brew and treat yourself to a sweet or savoury goodie for your morning coffee break!

At the rear of the store can be found The Original Factory Shop, which has a great range of sportswear, women’s fashion and items for both home and garden, including many big brands with up to 70% off recommended retail prices.

Chris Blenkey, Whitby’s Co-op manager said: “We’re really looking forward to welcoming the community of Whitby to see their newly transformed Co-op store. It has a fantastic fresh new look, and we have worked hard to develop the range, choice, products and services locally to serve our community. It is a great exciting new store with lots for everyone. Come on down and see - an extra special welcome awaits you at Whitby’s new look Co-op.”

The Co-op is committed to connecting communities and making a difference locally and aims to operate at the heart of local life. Customers can become a member of the Co-op. In addition to unlocking additional value and personalised offers for themselves, members help to make a difference to local causes as the Co-op donates 2p in every pound to community causes when members buy own-branded products and services. Whitby’s Co-op is proud to support InterActive Whitby and District, Happy Days Centre Whitby and Caring Together Whitby and District. Members can download a useful app where not only can they choose weekly great offers for themselves, they can also select which local cause to support.

The Co-op group is also committed to protecting the environment and the impact of plastic waste on it, and in Whitby’s Co-op you can now find recycling units where you can recycle your soft plastic like crisp packets, bread wrappers and plastic bags. It doesn’t matter where you brought them, you can take them into Whitby’s Co-op and do your bit for the environment!

12

Whitby’s Co-op can be found behind the railway station on Langborne Road and is open Monday to Saturday 7am to 10pm, and Sunday 10am to 4pm.

ARE YOU OVER 50 & WEAR GLASSES? IF SO I URGE YOU TO READ THIS... Since the national roll out of the COVID vaccinations I have seen an increase in the number of my patients coming back for their eye test. Many have been overdue since COVID first struck, well over a year ago. Your eyes are so delicate, so important and yet you are likely to take them for granted. I did! Just being overdue an eye test by 12 months can make a big difference to your eye health. A lot of things can happen inside your eyes with each passing year. If you are over 50, looking after your eyes becomes more important than ever as you are more at risk of eye problems. I am seeing an increase in the number of people who are unnecessarily suffering from eye conditions that can lead to blindness such as Glaucoma and retinal detachments, simply because they did not get their eyes tested in time. You may think your vision is good and you don’t need an eye test. But an eye test is more than a vision check. I do a very detailed health check on your eyes using the Optomap (I will explain more in a sec). You see, there are many eye diseases that don’t cause any symptoms, no pain and no vision problems. But they can be there lurking inside you eyes, and if left undetected can suddenly cause complete vision loss. That is why I have the “Optomap” ultrawide retinal scanner, at my Opticians. Not even James Cook Hospital has this machine. It can save your vision and even your life. Many Opticians offer retinal photography but this only sees around 45 degrees of your retina (the important part inside your eye). My Optomap sees 200 degrees, over 4X more!

24

What does this mean to you? Just the other day, my sister Victoria who is the Optician at the Skelton branch did an eye test for a man who booked just for a routine check. The Optomap spotted 3 holes (see picture) in his retina that would not have been seen with a standard eye test! He had emergency eye surgery which saved his vision. Another few days and he could have been blind. If you are over 60 the NHS only offer a basic eye test that does not include checks like this and you can only have a routine eye test once every 2 years but a lot can happen in 2 years. That’s why I offer the Eyeplan where you can get yearly (not 2 yearly!) eye tests with unlimited comprehensive eye exams, including Optomap scans, priority appointments and emergency appointments. For your complete peace of mind with the Optomap eye exam please see the next page As you saw with the picture of the 3 holes in the retina with the Optomap scan, this image saved a man’s vision. The Optomap has also spotted cancer in the eye that has saved not just someones’ vision but also their life. If you choose your Optician based on “buy one get one free” offers then stop reading this now. If you choose your Optician based on the amount of care and attention to your eye health and vision then read on. You only have one set of eyes to last your lifetime. That’s why I am offering the Optomap Eyeplan. With this you don’t need to wait 2 years for a routine eye test, you get direct access to an Optician whenever you need, you get a yearly enhanced eye exam, priority and emergency appointments and access to the Optomap technology that not even James Cook Hospital has! How much would you pay for this complete peace of mind eye care? My Eyeplan service starts from £7 per month, £1.62 per week, around the cost of a loaf of Warburtons! Until October 31st, use the voucher on the next page to get a £50 glasses voucher when you join the Optomap Eyeplan. If you would like more information on my Eyeplan, including a free copy of my book and report on 7 ways to look after your eyes, simply request this by calling my recorded message service 24/7 on 01287 646001. If you want to book for the Optomap eye test at my Loftus or Skelton branch call 01287 646000 today.

MENTAL HEALTH SUPPORT FOR CHILDREN RETURNING TO SCHOOL

With students returning to the classroom after the summer break health leaders in North Yorkshire and York are helping children and parents access support. It is common for students to experience emotional wellbeing difficulties when going back to school after a long summer break. In addition, with changing COVID-19 restrictions over the last eighteen months, some children may also have struggled with the shifts in social and academic expectations placed on them. Help is available for both young people and parents and carers, and it is important to seek advice when needed.

The local NHS clinical commissioning groups are reminding young people that there are a variety of services available to them across the region to help manage their mental wellbeing.

“For young people who are experiencing persistent symptoms which are impacting on their day to day lives, please remember that the NHS is here for those who need more help.” Dr Nigel Wells, Clinical Chair of NHS Vale of York CCG, said: “ Children and young people have faced significant disruption to their routine, education and social lives in the last 18 months, and students may be feeling anxious about returning to school or college. Mental health support is available to those who need it in North Yorkshire and York, including for parents and carers who have concerns about their child’s well-being.

Dr Charles Parker, local GP and Clinical Chair for NHS North Yorkshire Clinical Commissioning Group, said: “It is understandable that children and young people may be feeling anxious about returning to school.

“This worry is natural, and many children and young people will be able to cope with the support of their families and friends. YORKSHIRE LOFT LADDERS, QUALITY YOU CAN TRUST!

These days most homeowners suffer from a lack of storage space. So many precious items that need to be kept – but where to store it all? That’s where Yorkshire Loft Ladders come in. The company, based locally, offers homeowners the opportunity to maximise their storage space with a loft ladder, 50 sq ft of boarding and a light all fully fitted in less than a day from just £277 + VAT. But it’s not just the affordability of the package the company offers that makes Yorkshire Loft Ladders stand out as manager Mark Hodson explains:

‘Our watchwords are Quality, Integrity and Value. Quality in the materials that we use for all our installations and the fact that all our loft packages are fitted by time served tradesmen so our customers are assured of the best job. Integrity in that we will turn up at the time we say and make sure the house is spotless when we leave, and Value in that we offer our services at a price people can afford.

Our business relies on referrals and we got a huge amount of our calls from people who have been referred to us by our existing customers - that simply wouldn’t happen if we didn’t adhere to our overriding principles.

At the end of the day the old adage that happy customers lead to more happy customers is true and we work hard to make that happen for every installation we carry out!’

So, if you want to make use of your loft space, however big or small, call Mark on 0800 612 8359 and he’ll be happy to pop round and give you a no obligation quote so you too can make use of your loft!
