‘SCRAVIR: WHILE WHITBY SLEEPS’ BOOK REVIEW & COMPETITION

An email dropped into my Inbox a couple of weeks ago announcing the publication of a new contemporary gothic novel set in Whitby. We literally get dozens of emails from publishing companies and online retailers every day, and often I simply hit the ‘Delete’ key without even reading them, but an astounding claim in the opening sentence of this email caught my eye: ‘This novel is selling faster than fish & chips.’ Hooked, I emailed the chap back at Injini Press asking if a book can really outsell fish & chips in Whitby, the No 1 Staycation destination, where quite literally tons of this popular staple meal are served every week the many restaurants, cafes and takeaways?

There followed a climbdown - the claim was indeed a grotesque exaggeration, but the book was selling very well, and fish & chips seemed infinitely more appropriate than a reference to hot cakes! A couple of days later, a copy for review landed on my desk...

So what’s the storyline? Well, it is November 2016 and the famous Goth Weekend is in full swing in Whitby and a mysterious guest star is rocking the Pavilion. But all is not good in the town - emaciated corpses are appearing in the narrow windswept streets, cobbled yards and murky alleyways as dark forces mingle with the crowds. At the novel’s core is Daniel Murray, who comes from London for the Goth Weekend, and doesn’t believe in the supernatural, then there is local Whitby lass Tiffany Harrek who isn’t so sure. They both need to wise up, sort themselves out and so survive the challenges of this darkest of Whitby’s Goth Weekends, the weekend when true evil comes to town. Described in one review as ‘the explosive reimagining of Whitby’s darkest hour’, the novel is a real page turner full of intense moments and plot twists, one that will not let go of you until you reach the final page. Much of the novel is based in and around Henrietta Street, near to Fortune’s Kippers. This I particularly enjoyed about the novel, reading the pages and imagining it playing out in the familiar streets and places of the town. The central characters are very engaging too, and the novel is told from different viewpoints which helps with the 12

Book review by Peter Cooper exciting plot twists and also creates the suspense and tension that keeps the reader on the edge of their seat…

You can buy SCRAVIR from Holman’s Bookshop on Skinner St and both The Whitby Shop (opposite Great Reads) and The Whitby Bookshop on Church Street for just £9.99 - great value for a 416-page novel with a beautifully illustrated cover! Signed copies are also available on the publisher’s website https://injinipress.co.uk/shop/ where you can also read the first two chapters https://injinipress. co.uk/scravir-sea-inside/. Act fast though - the second printing of the first edition is selling quickly, almost outselling fish and chips in Whitby!

WIN A SIGNED FIRST EDITION OF SCRAVIR! Injini Press would love to give away three signed first edition copies of SCRAVIR to readers of the Whitby Advertiser who correctly identify two of the four other animals mentioned in ‘The Travels of Three English Gentlemen from Venice to Hamburgh, being the Grand Tour of Germany, in the year 1734.’ (have a look at the blog on INjini’s website if you are not sure!).

To enter this fabulous competition, simply post your answers with your name address and telephone number to Whitby Advertiser, Scravir Competition, PO Box 120, Whitby, YO21 3ED. You can also email your entry to competitions@ whitbyadvertiser.co.uk

ARE YOU OVER 50 & WEAR GLASSES? IF SO I URGE YOU TO READ THIS... Since the national roll out of the COVID vaccinations I have seen an increase in the number of my patients coming back for their eye test. Many have been overdue since COVID first struck, well over a year ago. Your eyes are so delicate, so important and yet you are likely to take them for granted. I did! Just being overdue an eye test by 12 months can make a big difference to your eye health. A lot of things can happen inside your eyes with each passing year. If you are over 50, looking after your eyes becomes more important than ever as you are more at risk of eye problems. I am seeing an increase in the number of people who are unnecessarily suffering from eye conditions that can lead to blindness such as Glaucoma and retinal detachments, simply because they did not get their eyes tested in time. You may think your vision is good and you don’t need an eye test. But an eye test is more than a vision check. I do a very detailed health check on your eyes using the Optomap (I will explain more in a sec). You see, there are many eye diseases that don’t cause any symptoms, no pain and no vision problems. But they can be there lurking inside you eyes, and if left undetected can suddenly cause complete vision loss. That is why I have the “Optomap” ultrawide retinal scanner, at my Opticians. Not even James Cook Hospital has this machine. It can save your vision and even your life. Many Opticians offer retinal photography but this only sees around 45 degrees of your retina (the important part inside your eye). My Optomap sees 200 degrees, over 4X more!

22

What does this mean to you? Just the other day, my sister Victoria who is the Optician at the Skelton branch did an eye test for a man who booked just for a routine check. The Optomap spotted 3 holes (see picture) in his retina that would not have been seen with a standard eye test! He had emergency eye surgery which saved his vision. Another few days and he could have been blind. If you are over 60 the NHS only offer a basic eye test that does not include checks like this and you can only have a routine eye test once every 2 years but a lot can happen in 2 years. That’s why I offer the Eyeplan where you can get yearly (not 2 yearly!) eye tests with unlimited comprehensive eye exams, including Optomap scans, priority appointments and emergency appointments. For your complete peace of mind with the Optomap eye exam please see the next page As you saw with the picture of the 3 holes in the retina with the Optomap scan, this image saved a man’s vision. The Optomap has also spotted cancer in the eye that has saved not just someones’ vision but also their life. If you choose your Optician based on “buy one get one free” offers then stop reading this now. If you choose your Optician based on the amount of care and attention to your eye health and vision then read on. You only have one set of eyes to last your lifetime. That’s why I am offering the Optomap Eyeplan. With this you don’t need to wait 2 years for a routine eye test, you get direct access to an Optician whenever you need, you get a yearly enhanced eye exam, priority and emergency appointments and access to the Optomap technology that not even James Cook Hospital has! How much would you pay for this complete peace of mind eye care? My Eyeplan service starts from £7 per month, £1.62 per week, around the cost of a loaf of Warburtons! Until September 30th, use the voucher on the next page to get a £50 glasses voucher when you join the Optomap Eyeplan. If you would like more information on my Eyeplan, including a free copy of my book and report on 7 ways to look after your eyes, simply request this by calling my recorded message service 24/7 on 01287 646001. If you want to book for the Optomap eye test at my Loftus or Skelton branch call 01287 646000 today.

YORKSHIRE LOFT LADDERS, QUALITY YOU CAN TRUST!

These days most homeowners suffer from a lack of storage space. So many precious items that need to be kept – but where to store it all? That’s where Yorkshire Loft Ladders come in. The company, based locally, offers homeowners the opportunity to maximise their storage space with a loft ladder, 50 sq ft of boarding and a light all fully fitted in less than a day from just £277 + VAT. But it’s not just the affordability of the package the company offers that makes Yorkshire Loft Ladders stand out as manager Mark Hodson explains:

‘Our watchwords are Quality, Integrity and Value. Quality in the materials that we use for all our installations and the fact that all our loft packages are fitted by time served tradesmen so our customers are assured of the best job. Integrity in that we will turn up at the time we say and make sure the house is spotless when we leave, and Value in that we offer our services at a price people can afford.

Our business relies on referrals and we got a huge amount of our calls from people who have been referred to us by our existing customers - that simply wouldn’t happen if we didn’t adhere to our overriding principles.

At the end of the day the old adage that happy customers lead to more happy customers is true and we work hard to make that happen for every installation we carry out!’ So, if you want to make use of your loft space, however big or small, call Mark on 0800 612 8359 and he’ll be happy to pop round and give you a no obligation quote so you too can make use of your loft!

VOLUNTEER GARDENERS WELCOME AT WHITBY YOUTH HOSTEL Whitby Youth Hostel sits at the top of the 199 steps, next door to the Abbey. It is a flagship hostel, popular with families and school groups throughout the year, and normally buzzing with activity. The hostel has an enclosed garden which is maintained and developed by a dedicated team of volunteer gardeners. The structure of the garden was already in place when volunteers were asked to restore the Physic Garden, using medicinal and culinary herbs which would have been familiar to the monks at the Abbey. The small group pooled their ideas, leaning heavily on the expertise of one of their members, local woman Elaine Hoyle. Once the herb garden was planted up, it was decided to tackle the main garden, restoring the especially for the benefit of bees and butterflies, hedging and replanting the beds. a wildflower meadow, the herb garden backed Around the central lawn are four quadrants with by trained apple and pear trees, a marine bank, a bay trees, roses and flowers. There is an area scented garden and a moorland area, while bushes and trees including figs, quince, gooseberry, redcurrant and blackcurrant provide plenty of fruit for making jam or puddings. During the lockdowns of the pandemic the gardeners were unable to continue, but they have been working hard to restore order since the reopening. The garden will again be open to the public on Wednesdays from 10.00-3.00 from the beginning of September. The current team of gardeners work on Wednesdays at a variety of tasks – everything from dead-heading the roses to weeding the paths, clipping the box hedges to planting new herbs. No-one is ‘in charge’; if a member feels that something could be improved, the whole group decides what should be done. It is a fabulous place to spend time, with beautiful views, satisfying tasks and good company. Keen gardeners are always welcome to come along to see the garden and meet the team to decide if they would like to become a volunteer. Contact whitbymanager@yha.org.uk for more details. 58
