SPRING 2020

Firstly. The entire team here at Your Golfer Magazine hope that all our readers are safe and well during this difficult time. Looking after each other has never been a bigger priority than now. Please stay safe. Whilst I dispense with the normal “in this issue” message I would like to dedicate this section to the clubs themselves. During this period all golf courses are closed. The best thing all golfers can do is to support your club and renew your subscriptions. Every industry is pulling together now, and golf is no different.

I am sure your club has provided not only a fantastic and well-kept course, but also good memories and lifelong friends. After all a golf club is a club like no other. It is a community and now more than ever communities need to pull together. Therefore, my opening comment to this issue is simple, Help your club as much as you can. After all, when this terrible virus has been stopped, courses will be open and will be in excellent playing condition. With no footfall for months the shape of your courses will probably never be bettered and will be in great shape for years to come. Please help your clubs where possible. We hope you all stay safe and well. The Your Golfer Team

New Pro Shop, Swing Studio, Office & Meeting Room Facility

At Fortrose & Rosemarkie Golf Club Fortrose & Rosemarkie Golf Club are delighted to announce that the construction of our new Pro Shop, Swing Studio, Office and Meeting Room facility at a cost of ÂŁ250,000 is scheduled to be completed at the start of Spring 2020. The club have invested significantly of late with a new irrigation system being put in place in 2019 and as a Club we have been working since the end of November to build a new structure for the benefit of our members and the many visitors who come to the Club each year to meet demand. The initial groundworks for the new Pro Shop, Swing Studio, Office and Meeting room started during the month of November and the work has been given the full support and backing by the committee and the club membership having been passed at an Special General Meeting during the month of August 2019. As a Club we are making every effort possible to ensure this new facility is delivered on time, so that the members and visitors who come to the Club can start enjoying a wonderful new facility here at the golf course sooner rather than later. As a Club we already have a fantastic clubhouse where we provide a full time bar and catering service. The course is open all year round so to have this new additional structure in place will be fantastic for the club going forward. The new Pro Shop will undoubtedly help our Club Professional, Rob Douglas to stock the best golf clothing, equipment and accessories not to mention being able to provide a custom fitting service and indoor lesson facility for both members and nonmembers with a new swing studio.

The Club also has one of the best practice areas/ ranges in Scotland where at over 400 yards in length this includes a short game practice area (including practice bunkers), grass and artificial practice playing surfaces, covered bays, a ball machine with baskets, and practice nets all of which are only 30 metres from the front entrance to the Clubhouse. There are also two putting greens (one behind the 18th green and the other beside the 1st teeing ground where the new pro shop, swing studio, office and meeting room is currently being built).

The 15th Oldest Recorded Golf Club In The World

All of our staff take great pride in the quality of service they provide for members and visitors to the links whilst ensuring the that they receive the best golfing experience possible. Located on the Chanonry Peninsula in the ‘Black Isle’ our Scottish links golf course enjoys breath taking panoramic views over the Moray Firth where the water can be seen whilst playing on each hole and we are only 20 minutes from the City of Inverness. Our Championship links course is the 15th Oldest Recorded Club in the World (1793) and it was latterly re-designed by the five time Open Champion James Braid back in 1932. Visiting golfers are welcome all year round and we provide a variety of membership packages to suit those staying locally and overseas. All junior golfers joining the Club this year aged 16 and under are also FREE! In 2017 (Turnberry Resort) and 2018 (St. Andrews) Fortrose & Rosemarkie Golf Club were awarded with Scotland’s Best Golfing Experience (value for money) at the Scottish Golf Tourism Week and Awards night. As a Club we were also shortlisted (in the top 4) for the Best Golf Course, 2019 in our category. The Luxury Travel Guide Lifestyle Awards also honoured us with the accolade of 'Golf Club of the Year for Scotland 2019'. The course ranks amongst the Top 25 in GB & Ireland's Favourite Fun Golf Courses that is guaranteed to entertain and captivate (with over 2,000 courses in GB & I).

In 2019, as a comparison to 2018, our visitor income increased by some 20% and as a Club, we are now investing in new facilities to bring the best golfing experience possible to our members and all visiting golfers who come to the Club given that we are the 15th Oldest Recorded Club in the World (1793), we are steeped in history and where we have hosted no fewer than 10 national championships over the last decade.

Champion returns home to Carden Park

One of Europe’s best qualified golf professionals and coaches David Llewellyn is coming home to Carden Park in Cheshire, although part of him never left the leading golf destination. The former welsh champion will return as Executive Golf Professional at Carden Park this Spring. He originally worked at the 1000-acre estate from 1994 to December 2002, during this time golf legend Jack Nicklaus and his son Steve designed the now famous Nicklaus Course. David was lucky enough to caddy for Jack in the opening exhibition match with Ian Woosnam. A Photograph of David alongside Jack, who won 18 major championships has remained above the stairway in The Clubhouse for over 22 years. Both then and now, David will work alongside General Manager Hamish Ferguson who says “David has always been one of the team and is a great asset to Carden Park. His worldwide experience, our recent PGA Accreditation and our ongoing programme of investment means we are poised to become one of the finest golfing destinations in the Country.”

David will be responsible for looking after the Club’s private members and visitors and will be raising the profile of the new golf Academy which was awarded PGA Accreditation at the start of this year. David is particularly keen to work in local schools and to help attract young people as well as professionals at the start of their career by using his knowledge and experience of playing with the world’s best players.

CARDEN PARK

Front Garden and Nicklaus Golf Course David became a professional golfer in 1968 and over the last 50 years has won the world cup of golf for Wales alongside Ian Woosnam and also 10 tournaments worldwide. Further career highlights include being named Henry Cotton Rookie of the year aged 20 and breaking the lowest 72-hole score in a European Tournament, a record he held for 25 years. In his coaching career he has helped 11 players to progress to the Tour. David prefers uncomplicated coaching methods and will be helping players at Carden develop all aspects of play from swing technique to short game control alongside the importance of mental focus which he has studied for over 20 years alongside a renowned golf and sport psychologist, Alan Fine. David is involved with the On-Course Foundation which started 10 years ago to use golf as a vehicle to help rehabilitate wounded and sick veterans. David alongside other PGA Professionals works to build self-confidence and self-belief through golf skills and events. He regularly guest lectures in golf studies at various universities in the UK and for the PGA Development programme.

David concludes, “I am very excited about coming back home, Carden Park has the opportunity to be one of the best golfing destinations in the UK and I will be working with Hamish to realise it’s full potential” Both the Cheshire and Nicklaus course, the latter designed by the great Jack Nicklaus and his son Steve, offer beautiful views of the Welsh hills and are a must for all golfing enthusiasts.

A Hole in One –

You wait for ever – then 2 come at once!

The photo shows the two happy golfers. On the left Graham Edwards [h/c 18] and on the right Kenton Cawley [h/c 5] During the winter competition AM/AM on Saturday 8th February we had 2 hole in ones within 10 minutes of each other on the par 3 15th hole. Chance on the day on the same hole about 32,000 to 1, chance on consecutive groups achieving this much, much higher! Graham was very excited to have finally made an ‘ace’ after trying for 33 years.

Flooded golf courses and flooded pesticide storage facilities are a greenkeepers nightmare. No one can predict when a flood is going to occur but everyone can develop a recovery program should the worst case scenario arise. There are three types of flood damage which can affect a golf course: Erosion - most likely to occur in flood plains adjacent to rivers that flow rapidly. Damage from erosion appears when flood water recedes and can range from minimal to severe. Submersion – damage is in relation to duration and depth of the submersion as well as the tolerance displayed by the grass type for instance, Bermuda grass - used on many of the golf courses in the United States - can survive more than 55 days of complete submersion, whilst Red Fescue grass is classed as having a low level of tolerance to submersion. Course damage from submersion can vary when the flood waters subside. Soil Deposition - it is possible for several inches of silt, clay and other debris to be deposited on the turf during a flood and the long terms effects of this can be detrimental to the recovery of the golf course. However, there are precautionary measures that can be taken by the right management team which will avoid lasting damage when nature takes a turn for the worst. Golf clubs can use various techniques and invest inwardly into their golf course and green keeping team/equipment by considering sediment removal on putting surfaces, using a balanced fertiliser, regular weed control and investing in drainage and irrigation systems to keep the course playable throughout the year.

The storms of 2020 Similar to the towns and villages situated in areas that are prone to flooding, it is important that the correct investment in made into barriers, prevention techniques and sustainability is made.

Don’t take

e chances. Act now.

With the recent flooding and severe weather to hit the United Kingdom in the shape of Storms Ciara and Denis on consecutive weekends, flooding protection systems and reduced water destruction measures were tested to their limits. Golf clubs are in a similar position as many housing estates, businesses and leisure complexes; with minimal interference to the aesthetics of the area, they must prevent and limit water damage to the course. Some clubs would have undertook flood-surveys long before the storms hit – ensuring that they were aware of your flooding risks? And how best to manage these risks. As groundwater levels rise and flash floods become unavoidable, the continued investment into irrigation and drainage at some of the country’s top golf clubs can be seen in action. With such an influx of water on to the golf course, it is important that this ‘has somewhere to go’ and is managed in a way that the course remains playable with minimal damage and disruption. The full extent of damage and the recovery required for several golf courses throughout the British Isles has begun to emerge. Scores of courses closed during January and February after being badly hit by storm damage and flooding - it was even thought that some clubs would never reopen. Most clubs has now reopened but the financial damage has been huge resulting in the application of emergency loan funds and interest free loans being taken out to repair the damage or put systems in place to prevent these catastrophes do not reoccur. With the storms at the beginning of 2020 affecting locations up and down the country, two golf clubs whose investment in course irrigation and drainage systems shone through – both Bamburgh Castle Golf Club in Northumberland and Bramshaw Golf Club’s Forest course in Hampshire recovered from the storms so well that play was possible almost straight away. In Northumberland and Hampshire, the rivers reached treacherous levels following a night of heavy rain brought by Storm Ciara first and then Storm Denis one week later. The River and sea levels reached dangerous levels.

Visit Hampshire for a golfing break to remember Home to many top quality golf courses, Hampshire is situated on the very south shoreline of England with a history that dates back to Anglo-Saxon times and a passion for golf that has existed since at least the 19th Century. The rolling hills, ancient forests and the fresh sea breeze of Hampshire make it a golfer’s delight and a much sought-after destination for an enjoyable day’s golf or a longer golfing holiday for players of all abilities. The region’s coastal location offers a fantastic opportunity to experience links golf as well as the many fantastic inland golf courses. Situated in Lyndhurst, Hampshire’s oldest golf course is located at Bramshaw Golf Club. A gem in the New Forest, Bramshaw GC

BRAMSHAW G

Measuring 5,752 yards, the par 69 Forest course makes use of its many natural features with the fairways rising and falling with the surrounding landscape which offers spectacular views of the surrounding countryside. The 1960s saw discussions to introduce a driving range at the golf club but, due to the amount of land that was available, it was decided that a further eighteen holes would be added which is known today as the par 71 Manor course which measures 6,400 yards. Bramshaw Golf Club moved to its existing clubhouse in 1983 from the site of the local Bell Inn. Today, the well-appointed clubhouse is home to bar and catering facilities that are owned by the golf club’s membership which elects Directors to run the venue each year. The clubhouse comprises a large first floor bar and restaurant with fantastic views of the golf course and surrounding Hampshire countryside. This leads to a spacious balcony overlooking the Manor course 18th green – perfect for al fresco eating and drinking in the warmer months. The well-stocked bar serves a selection of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages whilst the club provide a daily menu of homemade favourites and light bites for the enjoyment of members, visitors and their guests. Bramshaw Golf Club also caters for a variety of social and private functions throughout the year.

Take on the oldest course in Hampshire, The Forest Bramshaw Golf Club is the ideal place for golf societies with several summer and winter options to choose from. With the flexibility of two superb golf courses and ample choice from the society menus, the Bramshaw team are able to design a golf day package that meets the needs and budget of the visiting party. The golf club also offers fantastic stay & play deals in partnership with the jointly-owned, Bell Inn. The 43-year-old Swede has put pen-topaper on a multi-year agreement with the pioneering shoe brand and will compete around the world wearing ECCO GOLF’s famed hybrid shoes. Stenson has enjoyed a stellar career since turning pro in 1998 and became the first male Swedish major champion when he won the 2016 Open Championship at Royal Troon with a major championship record lowest aggregate score of 264. A two-time European Tour Golfer of the Year (2013 and 2016) and Olympic silver medallist, Stenson has spent over 300 weeks ranked in the World Top Ten during an illustrious career which has seen him record more than 20 Tour victories. Gwynedd

Featuring the stunning Porthmadog Golf Club

www.porthmadog-golf-club.co.uk

North Wales is littered with fine golf courses and some of the most spectacular scenery in the whole of the United Kingdom. The region’s pleasant locations, facilities and greens combine to provide a fantastic choice for a golf break whilst you can also take in the fantastic views of some of the UK’s most breath-taking countryside. As well as the many outdoor pursuits which can be enjoyed in North Wales, the region offers visitors some of the best value green fees around. The area’s unspoiled golf courses at affordable prices encompass a variety of unique and testing challenges, from the gentle, rolling parkland courses to stunning mountainbacked links-style golf courses. Some of the earliest golf courses in Wales can be found in the north, with many close to the Irish Sea meaning conditions can be challenging; with many golf courses set to the stunning backdrop of the surrounding mountains. Gwynedd is a picturesque county in north-western Wales, extending from the Irish Sea in the west to the mountains of Snowdonia In the east. Over the years, Gwynedd has remained a stronghold of Welsh culture with the county of Gwynedd home to the highest proportion of people in Wales who can speak the Welsh language. The ruggedness and wetness of the county’s landscape restricts farming to breeding hardy sheep. However, the demise of this has led to an increase in developing the disused farm buildings to second homes in the countryside and an influx in tourism with the main draw to Gwynedd in the 2000s, the many beaches and mountains the county has to offer. Gwynedd is mostly located within the Snowdonia National Park with the Snowdonia mountain ranges and Cambrian coastline as the town’s magnificent backdrop. Gwynedd is home to many cultural and historical places to visit including the nearby harbour town of Porthmadog.

Arguably Gwynedd’s number one golf course, is located at Porthmadog. Founded in 1905, Porthmadog golf course was designed and created by legendary golf course architect, James Braid. Today, the site offers a beautiful and traditional links course which provides friendly hospitality and an enjoyable but challenging round of golf for all ages and abilities. The par 72 course stretches over 6, 326 yards from the championship tees. The front nine is predominantly set on a heathland layout whilst, the course’s back nine has more of a links style to it. Each loop of nine provides stunning views of the Cardigan Bay coast and the Snowdonia mountain range.

Maverston GOLF COURSE

GOLFING BREAKS IN THE MAJESTY OF MORAY – MAVERTSON GOLF COURSE Covering over 50 miles of coastline from Nairn in the west to Banff in the east, the Moray Coast Trail has many significant attractions for the keen golfer. In an area rich in golfing history, visitors to Morayshire can make the most of both worlds, both on and off the golf course. This largely unexplored area, with its fishing villages, coastal walks and golfing heritage, is also home to the world-famous Speyside malt whisky region. The largest town in the Moray Coast area, Elgin, boasts its Cathedral, Biblical Garden in Coopers Park and Brodie Castle. The real jewel in the crown, however, can be found just five miles east of Elgin in the small village of Urquhart. Maverston Golf Course at Urquhart offers an inclusive, friendly and welcoming environment, which provides an enjoyable golfing challenge for all levels of golfer. Boasting an 18-hole, 6,335-yard Par 71 parkland course and a 9-hole, 1250-yard Par 3 course, Maverston Golf Course is set to compliment Moray’s fantastic array of golfing facilities. An excellent venue for golf breaks and society away days, Maverston offers unlimited daily golf for only £50, with discounts available for larger groups.

It also offers a number of memberships for both social and competitive golfers, with corporate memberships also available. Designed by former Scottish international golfer Euan McIntosh, the course is set in a stunning location with the spectacular backdrop of the local mountains to the south and wonderful views towards the Moray Firth in the north and east. The course makes best use of the gently undulating landscape and offers a challenging, but fair test to all levels of golfer. The designer’s favourite is the 174-yard par 3 on the 7th hole. Playing from an elevated tee, the green is well guarded by a Scots pine to the left, with a steep drop-off to the front. Accuracy is key!

The 334-yard hole 12 is a classic risk or reward par 4. Play the dogleg around the loch, or take on the carry over the water for a shorter approach.

Elsewhere, guests can take advantage of the 160m long warm up area, and a carefully prepared putting green to help gauge the speed to turn pars into birdies.

Finally, the testing 443-yard left to right dogleg on the 18th, skirted with whins and trees on the left, is a perfect sweeping track using the natural slopes. This wonderful finishing hole takes you back to the comforts of the clubhouse.

As one of the newer golf courses in Scotland, Maverston provides the perfect opportunity for Golf Societies and group outings in particular, from corporate days to stag parties and everything inbetween. Look out for the regular promotions for group bookings and society outings throughout the year.

The clubhouse offers a range of quality food and beverages, made from carefully selected, locally sourced ingredients. With the spectacular backdrop of the local mountains, the ‘19th hole’ is the perfect way to relax for golfers and nongolfers alike.

Have you ever imagined being able to drive a ball from one country to another??

Sounds fanciful I know, however, let me introduce you to a golf club that can offer just that and more. Sitting just south of Oswestry in Shropshire lies Llanymynech Golf Club, with Offas Dyke (the largest ancient monument following the border between England and Wales) running through the course Llanymynech offers an abundance of greenery and some of the most fantastic scenery you will find anywhere in the UK. Due to the fantastic drainage that this club has painstakingly maintained through its history, Llanymynech can provide golfers of all abilities a year round course that plays as well in the winter as it does in the summer. In fact Ian Woosnam first learnt to play golf here at the age of nine years old and Llanymynech still remains one of his favourite courses to play to this day. In fact the Woosnam family have got a long tradition with Llanymynech Golf Club with both Ian’s Mother and Father being previous captains and still have a firm association with it up to the present day. With 15 holes in Wales and 3 holes in England you are provided with the unique opportunity to drive off on the 4th hole in Wales and actually putt out on the same hole in England! Making Llanymynech Golf Club the only dual nationality golf course in Europe. The twelth hole (the highest point) on this fantastic yet challenging golf course offers stunning views of Shropshire and the Welsh border with a toposcope to point out the places of interest , making your golf experience as pleasurable as can be found in this part of the UK. A club member and past lady captain goes on to say we aim to provide great day’s golf and a friendly welcome on the course and in the clubhouse.

Llanymynech Golf Club

Play one round of golf in two separate countries In our opinion we feel that if you are looking for a golf break or society day in this region then Llanymynech Golf Club really has to be your first choice. The clubs website enables you to book tee times, enter open competitions as well as membership opportunities and visitor information. With Green fees starting at ÂŁ15 there is absolutely no reason to miss out on playing this gem of a course whilst taking in the stunning views of the Welsh hills and the Shropshire countryside.

Waterville Golf Links

Perfect Society Golf On The ‘True Links’ At Waterville – Ireland’s Number 1 For the ultimate Society Golf Day in Ireland, there can be no better challenge than to walk in the footsteps of Ireland’s earliest golfers, and some of the world’s greatest champions, on the true links course of County Kerry’s Waterville Golf Links. Less than 1% of all the golf courses in the world are ‘True Links’, and 85% of these geological rarities are in Britain and Ireland. Waterville Golf Links is regarded as the No.1 in Ireland! Over 100 years old, Waterville in the southwest of Ireland is a testing links-style course. This is a course steeped in history, with the earliest structured golf traced back to 1889, when a modest nine-hole layout occupied the flat eastern section of the present championship links. The current course opened for play in 1973, and has undergone several recent changes and refurbishments as part of the 'Fazio Project', under renowned international golf architect Tom Fazio. Fazio has assisted many of the world's leading clubs including Winged Foot, Pine Valley and Augusta National.

Regularly rated as one of the top 5 courses in the country, this remote course is set on a peninsula, and is surrounded by the sea on three sides. The back nine provides panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean and the Kerry mountains. The course can be stretched to over 7,300 yards but players should not be intimidated as several tees come in to play on every hole so all standards of golfers can enjoy a game. Over forty of the world’s greatest champions from Sam Snead onwards have challenged the Links over the years. Prior to the 1998 Open, O'Meara, Stewart and Woods were joined by Appleby, Duval and Jansen, all of whom became members of Waterville.

Later that year at a ceremony during the now famous Ryder Cup in Brookline, Massachusetts, United States team member Payne Stewart accepted the Captaincy of Waterville – the last golf honour he would receive before his tragic death. Today, a lifesized bronze statue pays tribute to his Captaincy and his special relationship with Waterville.

The elegant 18th century Georgian manor house, Waterville House, offers four-star residence over 13 en-suite bedrooms, including sauna, steam room, health facilities with a massage room and billiard room. Guests are free to use the private Fazio designed practice facility and have preferential tee times at Waterville Golf Links.

The golfing experience, therefore, is truly unique for the inspired Golf Society package, and facilities off the course are equally matched.

There is also the opportunity to fish in the famous Butler's Pool, with access to the private rivers and lakes surrounding Waterville House, the most famous sea trout and salmon fishery in Ireland.

This year marks the completion of the 3-phase clubhouse renovation. The project included a major reconfiguration of the front entrance, dining and bar area, locker rooms and new golf shop. An extensive collection of old and new photographs, golf art and memorabilia enhance the ambiance created by the mixture of visitors with the local membership. The restaurant and bar features fresh seafood and the finest Irish cuisine by international chef, Rob O’Mahony. Whether dining or relaxing over the best pint in Kerry, the stunning view over the famed Waterville Golf Links, the idyllic setting of Ballinskelligs Bay will not disappoint.

Waterville House & Golf Links is one of Ireland’s premiere golfing destinations and is listed in the Great Golf Resorts of the World. For more information visit www.watervillegolflinks.ie or call 353 66 947 4102.

There are different scenarios and penalties for players that hit the incorrect ball during their round of golf. These are outlined by the R & A:

Match Play

If a player makes a stroke at the wrong ball, he loses the hole. If the wrong ball belongs to another player, its owner must place a ball on the spot from which the wrong ball was first played. If the player and opponent exchange balls during the play of a hole, the first to make a stroke at the wrong ball loses the hole; when this cannot be determined, the hole must be played out with the balls exchanged.

Stroke Play

If a competitor makes a stroke or strokes at a wrong ball, he incurs a penalty of two shots. The competitor must correct his mistake by playing the correct ball or proceeding under the rules. If he fails to correct his mistake before making a stroke on the next teeing ground or, in the case of the last hole of the round, fails to declare his intention to correct his mistake before leaving the putting green, he is disqualified.

Mark your ball!

A company which was formed with golfers in mind, stampyourballs.com was founded by Inventor and Managing Director, Paul Green who once made the fatal golfing error of playing the wrong ball. Following the mishap, Paul set about developing a product that eliminates the risk.
