Summary In the wake of the catastrophic impact of Hurricanes 2017 Irma and Maria, the recent 2020 earthquakes in the southwestern region, the current global pandemic, and the ongoing depleted socio-economic conditions, the Island became a necessary field for advancing visioning proposals addressing the preservation of the natural resources while elevating the human settlement conditions to procure a viable and more resilient future. In the last three 2018, 2019 and 2020 PR_RS Puerto Rico Re_Start International Project & Research Workshops, led by the University of Florida, the Polytechnic University of PR, and the UNESCO Chair on Sustainable Urban Quality and Culture, through interdisciplinary inter-institutional collaborations between stakeholders, academia, government agencies, NGOs and international partners, we jointly addressed challenges on urban planning, architecture, housing, historic preservation, economic development, environmental engineering, transportation, green infrastructure, nature conservation, and landscape.

We counted with the invaluable contribution of participants from FEMA and the University of PR Mayagßez, that together with the professors and students of the Polytechnic University of Puerto Rico introduced and enlightened the dimensions of the Western challenges. Also, we were able to count with the scholars from la Sapienza University, the UNESCO Chair for Sustainable Urban Quality and Culture, the Center for Puerto Rican Studies in the City University of New York, and Dean Fraker from the University of Berkeley. The workshop is indebted to all of them. This compilation, of over 100 projects from all the workshops, gathers and showcases holistic ideas for multiple prototypical situations and conditions, providing visioning on cohesive and resilient approaches that could be applied and scaled, as components for discussion and as a platform for future endeavors. The Puerto Rico proposals resonate worldwide through the Climate Change impacted tropical realms. We are already planning the next year’s Workshop, PRRS 4, to address the issues of Energy, Historic Cities, Ports, large scale Agricultural developments, Ecological Preserves, Eastern Beaches, and Islands. The Workshop will cover the areas from Guayanilla to Ponce, Guayama to Humacao, Luquillo to Loiza, including El Yunque, Vieques, and Culebra. We would like to invite all participants of the first three Workshops to return and contribute to the upcoming new edition!
