White Springs Background White Springs has one of the strongest bike cultures in Florida. The town has attracted cyclists of all types to the area since the 1970’s to tour lesser-traveled scenic back roads and ride wild off-road single-track trails. Most roads have little vehicle traffic and all offer a relaxing view of North Central Florida countryside The Suwannee River Bicycling Association is headquartered in White Springs. There are picturesque well paved country roads accessible from White Springs. White Springs is surrounded by natural preserves which are crisscrossed by maintained hiking trails The Suwannee River section of the Florida National Scenic Trail is one of the most popular destinations for hikers in the state. Excellent views of the river from atop high banks, along with the occasional freshwater spring and small waterfall Stephen Foster Folk Culture State Park is the official start of the 170-mile Suwannee River Wilderness Trail The Suwannee River Wilderness Trail is a regional system of parks, forests, wildlife management areas and conservation lands. It provides miles of opportunity for a variety of tours along the river.

Carver School Site background The Carver School Site in White Springs is a place rich in memory. Carver High School, a segregated school, provided education to many generations of White Spring’s citizens. The school often partook in many activities, a prominent one being dancing for the Folk Festival. The school was closed in the 60’s taking part in the end of segregation. For many of the White Spring’s townspeople, the school represents the idea of segregation. For others it is still a place where memories were created, memories that are still dear to them. The school has been an abandoned building since the end of segregation with only its vast green space to be of use to the town. Many festivals, cookouts, and communal gatherings occur in this green lot on the site. To this day the site is very important to the community having both symbolic meaning and recreational purpose.
Design Intent School of Architecture’s Undergraduate Design 5 class with Professor Martha Kohen as Instructor was asked to create programs for the 7 acre site and present them as a conceptual proposals. The programs must focus on meeting the needs of the community while also addressing the issue of the context being the Carver neighborhood. Another point of focus was the dismissed school buildings whose reuse was up to the discretion of the students as long as it was acknowledged and addressed. The proposals are diverse with many communal issues being proposed in multiple ways. Some overlap between themselves while others are independent and even create an opportunity for revenue and touristic attraction. This exercise was completed as a preliminary exploration to the Town of White Spring’s possibilities. The Economic development graduate class from the Urban and Regional Planning Master Program with instructor Abhinav Alakshendra conducted an economic evaluation of the proposals.

The Market Pavilon was designed with the intent to be a weekly farmers market. After researching the town of Whithe Springs, I am aware that there is a weekly farmers market but this site will give the farmers market a chance to grow as well as provide a unity for the surrounding community. This site also can be used for the festivals that currently are held in the same site. Parking is available for vendors to access the covered walkways and there is also parking available near the existir Carver School site. The main space is the pavilion that can also be used as a stage for a small for a small band during festivals as well as shared space amongh visitors. The two covered walkways on either side of the pavilion are areas for vendors to sell their goods as well as a place for food for the festivals. The concept for the design of the three spaces was to create a boundary around a main central space, which includes trees for shade. This space is intended to be a community space for visitors to the site.

The ultimate goal for this intervetion is to create an opportunity to revitalize the community and connect it with the current world. This library is set on the foundation of a structure that has historycal value and will help promote a progressive mind set in the community. The intervention sits on this historical foundation to remind the occupants of where they came from. This library will become a catalyst for the growth and the opportunity that is to come to White Springs.

The Carver High School was once a segregated school in the town of White Springs and it is currently not in use and decaying away. The proposed park built in its place is meant to promote community unity by offering a space for recreation open all days of the week. The community has an opportunity to enjoy a space they can be proud of and at the same time they can profit from it. The park includes a space for pavilions that the community members can rent for birthday parties and yoga classes. The skate park will attract the younger generations and will promote community interaction for the future.

Crossings By Paulina
A hostel intervention on carver school emerged after analyzing historical, social, and geographical features of the site. Its flatness, horizontality and isolated conditions are marked by natural and man made boundaries. The abandoned school not only has a direct impact on the physical landscape, but it also holds transcendental significance in the culture of local community. In reference with the contextual surroundings, the location of the school is deflected from the heart of white springs and place across the eastern side of train tracks. The effects of segregation led to a social separation affecting the development and growth of the town. In response to the site context and historical relevance, the concept for this project emerged from the crossing points along the train tracks which allow the communication between both sides of town. The architectural language in the design manifests a sensitive dialogue between the existing building and its natural environment. By implementing the main geometrical elements of carver school, the hostel opens itself to its surroundings by breaking trough boundaries and connecting edges. The engagement with the ground is marked by water features that reflect light and textures along its axis. Throughout the intervention, moments are paused by defining views, allowing air flow, and compressing spaces. This elements activate the senses and articulate the complexity between density and vastness.

Unit Lodge By Demu Ao Open a new road in the midle of the site and regard the west part of the site as reserve space. In order to show my respect of the original school I decided to keep it, redefine it’s functions, and let it to be a lodge. Separate one original classroom into three rooms for users, reuse the shaded path to be a “balcony-like” space. Design a restaurant at the southwest part of the school. Established outdoor eating space for users so they can choose wether to be inside or outside based on their preference. Based on respecting the history, I want the reataurant to harmoniously stay with the school by redesigning the middle yard to let it have some connection with the forest that is behind.

Club House Wagons By Chandni Chudasama My proposal for the Carver School site is to create a structure that responds to the characteristics of the landscape. After researching the factorson how this land was used in the past and how it is used in present day, I propose a structurethat is sustainably built and placed on railroad tracks in order to make ir moveable for efficient land use. These moveable structures will be fully transformable according to the program desired for the use of each space. The wagon-like structures will collectively form the city’s club house. An area where the community can gather for social events, recreational activities, and learning. The flexibility of the space will allow it to be used for various programs depending on the needs of the city and its residents, The former Carver school building will be left on site for future restoration and also for the poin of entry to the site.

Canvas For The Youth By Maria Camila Jaramillo White Springs is a town that has not been renovated in many years. Historically and culturally, the community has always beeninclined towards craft-making; Hence, I chose my program to be a multiporpuse center for th arts. My interventionconsists of a series of spaces where people from the community, youth and adult can gather and teach each other how to make the beautiful handmade products produced daily. In the town of White Springs, there is currently no place for kids to distract themselves. Therefore, I think they need something that will not only entertain them, but also inspire them to want more of life. The intervention is on th existing Carver School. The materials of the school that will be left over after demolition will be recycled and repurposed for the flooring of the intervention and the surrounding landscape. From the intervention there is a visual connection to the surrounding forest and a physical connection when nature comes into place and finds its way through the building by the hanging vines that are located throughout. The intervention contains two classrooms, an office, and a stage with backstage storage. It can also be used for the May 17th festival using its outside area and pavilion.

The town of White Springs was a major tourist destination in the 19th century. People flocked in from all over the country to bathe in hte rejuvenating mineral spring. Over decades the town has faded and lost its draw, yet still retains its natural beauty and charm. This assigment attempts to revive oart of this historic community. The proposing of a restaurant for the Carver neighborhood on the siteof the old school would be very beneficial for the community. The citizens of the town have no access to fresh food; their only options are convenience stores or traveling outsideof the city limits. A restaurant with a community garden would not only provide much needed nutrients, but also, it would help to bring the town togetherby drawing the downtown side of White Springs into the historic Carver neighborhood. Furthermore, as an added bonus, this project will employ sustanaiblemethods by salvaging the existing auditorium and foundation, encorporating them into design.

Carver Juncture By Karina Castrodad The concept behind this project is to bring the community of White Springs together. Currently, this town is segregated. The train track separates the town diagonally, eventually creating a disconnection between the north and the south. North-east of the town, The Carver School remains meaningful to the neighborhood surrounding it. For this project, it is to be restored and brought to its best condition for the people of White Springs to contemplate this school. This project works as two programs; A community park and a museum. The community park is designed to bring people from both parts of town together and can also be used for activities, such as, gatherings, events held by the community, and for anybody’s leisure time. The museum provides a free space for visitors to look at all the historical references of the town beginning with the spring, the Swanne River, Stephen Foster State Park, and The Carver School. Along with the history are views of the community park that create visual spaces within the structure.

Eco lodge site background The second exercise involved the 100 acres Barnet Tract that the town was awarded for development by the Suwannee River Management District. The Town proposed ideas for an Eco Lodge program. The Eco lodge site is in the outer part of the town bordering the Suwannee River. The site consisted of two location north and south of the intersection of Highway 100 (Interstate 41) and the River. The northern site was dominated by a tree farm of Long Leaf Pines but also inhabited by mixed native Florida vegetation. The south site is all natural mixed vegetation. The south site of the intersection currently has a boat access ramp with a few non paved parking spots. The whole site has a risk of flooding with severe occurrences on the south site. The River has increased in height almost reaching the road. The northern site also has a possible connection to the previous Carver project.
Design intent School of Architecture’s Undergraduate Design 5 class with Professor Martha Kohen as Instructor, was asked to design an Eco Lodge for the site. The first investigation resulted in a world survey Eco Lodge precedents from where the class constructed programmatic ideas. Each student then developed a land use master plan and strategic ideas followed by programmatic choices and architectural proposals. The students had the option to choose what aspect of the Eco lodge they would focus on. The project focused on creating a sustainable lodge experience that would be unique to White Springs. The needs of the community were to be considered as well as extensive park and outdoor space and facilities. The projects are divided between Cabins, Lodges, Restaurants and Recreation.
