Introduction, Welcome to the 3rd annual Whitetail Guide “Super Doe” magazine! We are grateful for the Whitetail Industry’s continued support and dedication to the preservation of records related to these amazing animals that we hold so “dear”. The farms listing animals in this magazine are farms that have a lot of confidence and experience in this industry. If you are looking to buy animals in the future I would highly encourage you to call these farms for your next addition. New for 2013 2013 has us adding a special Texas “Super Doe” section. With the magazine going to almost every farm in Texas it only seemed fit to add this great feature and with Texas having their own unique market we decided it should have its own special section. We also upgraded the Super Doe spots to a half page from their original ¼ page! This will give each farm the space they need to post pictures from the Super Doe’s offspring. Spring is upon us and we all get excited about the possibilities of what our new fawn crop can do for our farm. Now, right now is the time to ask yourself what went right last year and what went wrong. It is very easy to for a consultant to tell you to look at last year and determine what you need to do different this year, but how do you as a producer do this? Every farm is different and each has its own unique challenges so where and how do you start? Start with Records, did you keep detailed records from last year? If you did not then the first thing to promise yourself is that this year you will. Keeping detailed records can seem like extra work when you barely have time to breath, but they can be an incredibly valuable tool. Your fawn death loss should be 5% or less. Anyone can look out the door and simply count the number of animals they have now vs. the number that were born, but if you kept detailed records and were able to determine at what age they died and what they died from you could potentially implement new procedures to reduce loss this coming season. Whenever I am asked to do an on the farm assessment for a producer the first thing I ask them to do is send me is a copy of their records. Sadly most cannot, they can send me copies of their feed bill or a receipt for their new gator but are unable to provide basic information about their farm. Records can give you information about what needs to be changed and they can also tell you what you are doing right. Everyone thinks they will remember and you do for about two minutes, but if I asked you what you had for dinner three nights ago you would be hard pressed to figure out what it was. Records are not just what antibiotic you gave on a certain day or how much vaccine you gave when you weaned fawns, records are a window into the day to day function of your farm. When I ask producers what their average weaning weights were last year I generally get a blank look. If they had weighed their fawns at weaning and recorded it for the past three years, we could take that information and be able to compare the success or failure of their milk replacer, parasite control and the supplements they give. KNOWDLEGE IS POWER, records give you the ability to make wise decisions about your business. Deer producers raise these animals because it is fun and they love doing it, but it IS a business. Having accurate records is one of the first steps to running a successful business. If I asked you what the average score on your three year old shooter bucks was for the past three years would you be able to give me that information? If you have this information you could determine what genetics you need to change, add or delete from your herd. The old saying â&#x20AC;&#x153;Write it down so you donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t forgetâ&#x20AC;? is a pearl of wisdom we all need to remember.
