PRESIDENT’S CUP RECIPIENTS Jude Battista, of Spokane, double majored in computer science and mathematics. Julia Haley, of San Diego, double majored in history/ social studies and secondary education. She learned of Whitworth through her parents, Tom and Jeannette, who both graduated from Whitworth in 1986. She loves to travel and completed three Jan Term trips and one May Term trip. Those trips were incredible opportunities for growth and learning, and times to get to know professors and students better in a different setting. She also loves music and played in the Whitworth Concert Band for 2 1/2 years and sang in the Whitworth Women’s Choir all four years. During her senior year, she had the joy and privilege to lead the women’s choir as president. She also served at Whitworth Church’s Kids Club throughout college and at Sunday school for two years. She loves to crochet and made sweaters, potholders, coasters and blankets in her time at Whitworth. Her favorite spot to work was under the trees in front of BMac in the spring. Amanda Llorens, of Portland, Ore., double majored in theology and Spanish language & literature. She was a committed member of the En Christo club and delivered sack lunches to the Park Tower Apartments downtown nearly every Saturday of her time in Spokane, forming relationships with the residents along the way. Her sophomore year, she participated in Whitworth’s Central America Study & Service Program, attending language school in Guatemala and completing an internship in Nicaragua. Her internship was at La Villa Esperanza, a home for at-risk, adolescent girls. She is passionate about learning other languages in addition to Spanish. Her junior year she studied Hebrew and received the Zondervan Hebrew Award. The summer after her junior year, she participated in Whitworth’s Summer Fellowship Program and served the Hispanic population in the San Diego area through Solana Beach Presbyterian Church and its partner, North County Immigration and Citizenship Services. She also returned to La Villa Esperanza in Managua, Nicaragua, to continue serving the girls there.

Stephanie Melton is from Tualatin, Ore., and was a French & Francophone studies major. At Whitworth, she loved being a resident assistant in Baldwin-Jenkins, participating in the Summer Fellowship Program in Salt Lake City, and volunteering in Spokane schools with the RISE program. In the world languages & cultures department, she served as a conference assistant, conducted research on language immersion programs, and studied abroad for a semester in Lausanne, Switzerland. She also participated in an internship at World Relief Spokane in its Match Grant program. Krystal Roberts was born and raised in Walla Walla, Wash. An elementary education major and Spanish education minor, she finished her undergraduate degree in three years. She competed on the Whitworth women’s cross country team for three years and on the track & field team for two years, achieving several accomplishments. She was an all-conference runner in cross country for three years in a row and in track for two years in a row; was an all-region runner and member of Whitworth women’s national-qualifying cross country team her freshman year; and received an All-Academic individual award for cross country. Her interests include spending time with family and friends, attending church/ faith-related activities, being outdoors, running, playing sports, volunteering, reading and baking. Isaac Santos is from Olalla, Wash., nestled in between Seattle and the Olympic Peninsula. He was a political science major with environmental studies and theology minors. During his time at Whitworth, he found immense joy and fulfillment through building community at Park Tower in downtown Spokane through the En Christo club, Frisbee Friday, interning with Spokane Riverkeeper, working with incredible teams of individuals in residence life as a resident assistant, and interacting with students and faculty members who shared his enthusiasm for the environment and politics. Largely due to such experiences, he has continued to develop an ardent passion for the natural world – a passion stoked for many years prior through backpacking trips with his parents and uncle, the Planet Earth documentaries, and conversations with his grandma, and one which he plans to pursue vocationally.

Assistant Professor of Theology Haley Jacob is a rural Minnesota native who joined the Whitworth Theology Department in 2015. She earned master of arts degrees in theology and New Testament at GordonConwell Theological Seminary in Massachusetts and holds a Ph.D. from the University of St. Andrews in Scotland. Between educational pursuits, Jacob taught English in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, and served as a pastor in Cooke City, Mont., a rural mountain town situated on the edge of Yellowstone. Since coming to Whitworth, Jacob has taught New Testament, as well as a selection of courses that focus on biblical theology and Pauline epistles, including The Messiah, The Bible & Outsiders, Genesis in the Letters of Paul, Romans, and Philippians. Her first book, Conformed to the Image of His Son: Reconsidering Paul’s Theology of Glory in Romans, was published by IVP Academic, and in 2018 Christianity Today named her one of “10 New or Lesser-Known Female Theologians Worth Knowing.” She is currently working on a commentary on Colossians and rewriting her doctoral thesis for a lay audience. Since coming to Whitworth, Jacob has also met and married Alan and had two children, Phoebe (20 months) and Brooks (4 months). In her free time… oh, wait. In her life before having “two under two,” Jacob spent her free time reading (for fun!), baking, traveling (29 countries and counting!), cycling, hiking, backpacking and fishing. While her current adventures are lived vicariously through Corduroy and company, she is grateful for these long-hoped-for days and knows that they, too, are short-lived.

ACADEMIC REGALIA
Academic regalia is a tradition dating from the Middle Ages, when long robes and hoods were everyday attire designed to protect against the cold and drafts of medieval university halls. It remains the daily costume at some British universities. The many variations in academic dress are not incidental, but are rich in meaning. Each costume represents both the degree held by the wearer and the institution that awarded it. Though European universities have been free to adopt any style they choose, a considerable degree of standardization has been achieved in the United States. Following are some of the elements of the code of academic dress. HOOD: The hood, which is draped down the back, carries more symbolic significance than any other part of the costume. The border, extending over the shoulders to meet in a “V” at the front, indicates by its colors the discipline in which the degree was earned. Colors for some of the faculties are white (arts, letters, humanities); cream (social science); dark blue (philosophy); light blue (education); scarlet (theology); pink (music); golden yellow (natural science); lemon (library science); nugget (business, accounting); and sage green (physical education). The lining of the hood, partly exposed, is in the colors of the degree-granting institution (for Whitworth, crimson and black). Doctoral hoods are longer than those of master’s degree recipients and have a wider border. Recipients of the bachelor’s degree do not wear hoods. GOWN: Black gowns are the rule, but a few universities use other colors. A doctor’s gown is recognizable by the three horizontal velvet bars on each sleeve, either in black or in the color of the discipline in which the degree was granted. Typically, a doctor’s gown also has velvet panels down the front. The typical gowns for master’s degree and baccalaureate degree candidates do not have decorated panels or sleeves. CAP: The familiar hard-topped mortarboard, or Oxford cap, has long been standard, but a soft tam is increasingly common. The tassels are usually black or the color of the discipline. The tassel on a doctor’s cap is usually metallic gold.
THE BANNERS
The banners carry the Celtic cross, representing the university’s Scottish Presbyterian heritage, and the seal of Whitworth University. These banners are a permanent part of the commencement exercises.
LAND ACKNOWLEDGMENT
As followers of Christ, we are compelled to act justly, love mercy and walk humbly with God. It is our love of God and neighbor that leads us to offer the following statement: a xest sxľxaľt. Welcome, everyone. We acknowledge that we . . . gather today on the traditional homelands of the four bands of the Spokane Tribe of Indians: Sntut úlix. w, Snx. w méne , ’ Scqesciłni and Sčewile . Since time immemorial, the Spokane Tribe of Indians has lived prosperously on this land, identifying themselves as “sqélix. w,” or “flesh of the land.” We pay our respects to their Elders – past, present and emerging – and we acknowledge their continuing connection with the land, waters and culture. We honor God with gratitude for the land itself and the peoples who have fished, hunted, harvested and gathered here for generations. This acknowledgment recognizes the first custodians of this land, the suffering they endured, and the continued restoration and healing needed. It is important to understand the history that has brought us to reside here, because such understanding fosters a more united community that honors and embraces the first peoples of Spokane. We thank the Spokane Tribe members for sharing their stories, culture and language to develop this welcome. lem lmtš šey’ u hoy. 32
THE QUASQUICENTENNIAL PINECONE
Whitworth’s ceremonial icon, to be carried at commencement, convocations and other official university ceremonies, is the Quasquicentennial Pinecone. The icon was commissioned and presented to the university by President Beck A. Taylor to honor the institution’s 125th anniversary, in 2015. It was designed by Professor of Art Katie Creyts and was first used at Spring Convocation 2016. The icon depicts the cone of the ponderosa pine, long a symbol of Whitworth’s beautiful tree-lined campus. Crafted of cast bronze and glass, the Quasquicentennial Pinecone reflects a lamp of learning as well as the characteristics of the cone itself. The top of the piece includes a quotation from the original 1890 Whitworth College catalog, and 12 of the cast-glass pinecone scales feature moral and intellectual virtues that reflect the Whitworth community’s highest aspirations for its members. The text for each of the virtues was handwritten by a different member of the Whitworth community, signifying that from many voices and perspectives, we come together as a single body, united in celebration of and dedication to Whitworth’s Christian mission.
LATIN HONORS
Latin honors at Whitworth University are based on the traditional Latin wording: cum laude (with honor), magna cum laude (with high honor), and summa cum laude (with highest honor).
