A Letter from the Provost I am proud that Whitworth University faculty members are Christian teacher-scholars. They do not see scholarship and teaching as unrelated, nor do they see them as in competition with one another. Whitworth University faculty members have student learning as their No. 1 priority. And their research, publication and creative activities not only broaden the reach of their “classroom” to the wider world, but enliven Whitworth’s learning environment. At some research universities, scholarship is done for personal prestige and career advancement, or as a means of securing additional funding sources for the university. In such institutions, commitment to teaching is sacrificed for the sake of scholarship. Faculty at such places guard their time for “their own work” by minimizing the time that they spend with students, especially undergraduates. In contrast, Whitworth faculty pursue scholarship and creative production in ways that help students catch the excitement of discovery and application of new knowledge to the solution of complex technical and human problems. A substantial amount of the work represented in this Faculty Scholarship Report involved facultystudent collaborative research. Such collaborations enhance student learning through mentoring and develop students’ critical thinking, creativity and problem-solving skills. Faculty in their role as teacher-scholars model and promote an innovation-oriented culture. Whitworth teacher-scholars love God and God’s created order with mind and heart. The scholarship and creativity exemplified by the projects listed in this report serve humanity by producing new knowledge, clarifying complex problems, provoking thought and bringing insight to what had been only dimly understood. Faculty scholarship fulfills and deepens Whitworth’s mission. Caroline J. Simon Provost & Executive Vice President

“Scholarship in many ways is like working on a puzzle. Once you start on a project, the challenge is to discover as many of the puzzle pieces as possible (evidence, interviews, contemporary accounts, secondary accounts) and try to put the puzzle together. When working with students, it’s very fun to witness the joy of students when they discover something new.” DALE SODEN Professor History

“What a joy it is to collaborate on research with my students! Scholarship is enhanced by inviting others into the process. My students and I have the opportunity to learn and grow, contribute to our understanding of help and healing, and strengthen our mentorship connection with each other. Together we share in the excitement and love for the work, elevating scholarship as a special interconnection in our vocational paths.” ELIZABETH CAMPBELL Associate Professor Psychology

“I use my research in the field of financial literacy for a course I teach on econometrics. Students interpret regression models and critique journal articles that use econometrics. In addition, the scholarly work I do keeps me up-to-date on statistical processes and recent research. I also reference it in the other courses I teach as background to specific topics.” ROBIN HENAGER

“When my students see me as a learner, they also trust and respect me as a teacher. This process allows me to convey my understanding and empathy of their difficult challenge to acquire a new language. Ultimately, collaborating with students builds skills and vocational discernment that classroom learning alone cannot achieve. I love getting to be part of my students’ ‘aha’ moments.” KIM HERNANDEZ

“A large portion of my load involves working directly with student composers and performers in weekly applied lessons, and it is particularly gratifying to see the students develop their skills to a level that enables them to premiere a new work or present a strong recital. It is also thrilling to collaborate with student performers in the context of an ensemble performance or, in a few cases, work with advanced students in a professional ensemble such as the Spokane Jazz Orchestra. BRENT EDSTROM
