2021 PROVOST’S AWARD RECIPIENT JASON WOLLSCHLEGER Professor of Sociology
AN INTERVIEW WITH THE PROVOST
Provost Gregor Thuswaldner: How did you become interested in your current scholarship project? Jason Wollschleger: I went to graduate school in part to study the intersections of race/ethnicity, religion and violence. So, in many ways this feels like it is my first, real project because it is the first time I have been able to explore all of those at once.
GT: What are you trying to demonstrate in your research? JW: In the current project, we are exploring the social structure of the civil rights movement at the local level. The image shown here is a first draft: Each blue dot is a weekly meeting of the Alabama Christian Movement for Human Rights, which took place in local Black churches, and each red dot is a speaker/ leader at the meeting. It is a visual representation of the social structure of the civil rights movement in the Black Church in Birmingham from 1961-63.
GT: How has your teaching influenced your scholarship and vice versa? JW: The initial idea that sparked this project occurred to me while teaching my first Jan Term class in January 2012. I spent a while looking for data but came up short until I led my Race Across America program for the first time in Jan Term 2017. While spending time in Birmingham and doing some research, I realized it would be the perfect case study. Since then, this project has allowed me to bring new content into a number of my regular classes as well as offer a new class on the Black Church. PROVOST’S AWARDS FOR SCHOLARSHIP The Provost’s Awards for Scholarship and Scholarly Promise are awarded annually with the intent to recognize and encourage sustained scholarly activity and enable progress on an important project likely to make a major contribution to human knowledge.

“Whitworth’s approach to scholarly activity is unique in its student-centric nature. Everything I do in research is done with the intention of bringing students into the work and providing them opportunities to experience high-impact scholarship. My favorite part of working with students in research are the moments and bursts of insight and understanding that occur as a student researcher develops their understanding of the field. Be it at the bench when we get a project to work for the first time or in data analysis when we, together, realize the deep implications of the data we have collected, it is always exciting to share these moments with young minds!”

“In my experience, Whitworth supports broad research interests and embraces different research methods that scholars choose to utilize. I don’t feel pressured to conform to what would be considered conventional research topics and methods in my field. I feel supported as I examine contexts and consumer segments that have historically been understudied and underrepresented in consumer and marketing research.”

SAMANTHA MILLER
Assistant Professor, Theology “Whitworth understands that scholarly activity should serve the church and should always be excellent. The faculty is not content to write only for the sake of a few other scholars who will understand; most of us want to write things that will be edifying and useful to people in the world. Our scholarship is part of how we follow Christ into this world and practice resurrection for the sake of its healing.”
