BENEDICTION Rev. Forrest H. Buckner, Ph.D., Storm Family Dean of Spiritual Life & Campus Pastor
RECESSIONAL Angus Scott Pipe Band The audience will remain seated until the graduates have recessed.
COMMENCEMENT SPEAKER 2022 Instructor Anne Trefry joined the Whitworth Mathematics & Computer Science Department for the first time in 1987 as a visiting instructor of mathematics. After teaching full time and as an adjunct for several years, she took some time off when her kids were young, returning as a regular faculty member in 2004. A native of Philadelphia who grew up in Colorado, she earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in mathematics in 1981 and 1984, respectively. She taught at Gonzaga University before coming to Whitworth, the alma mater of her sister and brother-in-law. Trefry is passionate about teaching, students, and all things Whitworth. Her favorite classes include Calculus, Discrete Mathematics, Linear Algebra, Graph Theory and Combinatorics, and Abstract Algebra, but she is eager to help students at any level of mathematics succeed. She especially enjoys mentoring her advisees from First-Year Seminar to graduation. She recently began teaching Math History, which combines her love of mathematics, history and travel, since the class involves a Jan Term trip to Europe. One of her goals is that her enthusiasm for the subjects she teaches will be contagious and will grow in her students. She is also known on campus for her love of Whitworth Music Department concerts, Whitworth sporting events, Tuesday chapel and all things Star Wars. Trefry’s early scholarship was in combinatorial block designs, but her recent work is in math history. In 2017, she gave a talk at the Pacific Northwest Sectional meetings of the Mathematical Association of America on Leonhard Euler. She will be furthering her study of Euler, his theology, and his approach to mathematics during her upcoming sabbatical. Trefry has been married for over 35 years to Brian, and together they have two sons, Ian and Joel. Together they share a love of camping, hiking, running, watching sports, history and visiting museums.

PRESIDENT’S CUP RECIPIENTS Ricardo Aguilar, of Spokane, Wash., is a double major in secondary education and mathematics. He has enjoyed the various education placements that were assigned to him through the education department, allowing him the opportunity to experience many different school environments including the Salish School of Spokane, an immersion school that offers students a connection to their culture through their education. A resident assistant for two years, he was given the chance to help shape a community and cultivate his leadership skills that he now puts to use in his classroom. His favorite on-campus opportunity was being a teaching assistant for Great Themes of the Bible during his junior year, where he and Assistant Professor of Theology Samantha Miller co-taught alternating sections of the class. Some of his fondest memories of Whitworth include having late-night study and hangout sessions in the Stewart lounge, leading PrimeTime activities that cultivated a sense of community in his residence hall, and getting coffee at Mind & Hearth with the professors he has had over the years. Kasana Anderson, of Bothell, Wash., is an elementary education major with minors in English language arts, reading instruction, Spanish, and English language learners. She loved connecting with the Whitworth community as a Ballard resident assistant her sophomore year and as a success coach her junior year. She also participated in the club En Christo her entire time at Whitworth and served on leadership her junior and senior years, which allowed her to build lasting relationships with people on campus and in downtown Spokane. Some of her favorite experiences while at Whitworth include student-teaching at Evergreen Elementary in the fall and studying abroad in the Dominican Republic for her intercultural education experience during the Jan Term of her senior year. After graduation, she plans to return to the Dominican Republic to teach fourth grade. Caleb Crary, of Spokane, is a political science major with minors in philosophy and theology who is graduating with George Whitworth Honors. Caleb received several awards from the political science department as an undergraduate, including two departmental achievement awards and the writing award for his paper on constitutional law during the 2019-20 academic year. At Whitworth, Caleb worked as a research assistant for Professor Julia Stronks, participated in the Weyerhaeuser
Younger Scholars Program, and played on the Ultimate Frisbee team. This past fall, Caleb was a student in the American Studies Program in Washington, D.C., where he worked as a policy and development intern for the Center for Public Justice, a nonpartisan think tank. Caleb also received the Sarah Lynn Castner Endowed Scholarship for pre-law students and plans on pursuing a law degree after he serves two years in Teach for America as an English teacher in Chattanooga, Tenn. Madison Duneman, of Billings, Mont., is a triple major in international studies, political science and Spanish with a minor in business. She is graduating with George Whitworth Honors. During her undergraduate studies, she completed the Central America Study & Service Program, studying abroad in Guatemala and Costa Rica. While abroad she had the opportunity to work with refugees at the organization Fundación Mujer, teaching English classes and recording refugees’ stories into a publication for the organization. During her time at Whitworth, Madison participated in the world languages & cultures department, working as the Spanish live lab coordinator. She served as vice president and president of the Political Science Club. She plans to continue her studies at law school this fall in order to pursue a career in criminal prosecution. Sarah Hudson, of Seattle, is a double major in secondary education and mathematics. While at Whitworth, she volunteered as a Young Life Leader at Shadle Park High School and was a part of Student Staff, a leader training program led by Kent McDonald, Young Life regional trainer and Whitworth lecturer. She worked as an office assistant and trip leader for Whitworth’s outdoor recreation program for three years, through which she gained both leadership skills and outdoor experience. She has enjoyed exploring opportunities in the field of education throughout her time at Whitworth, tutoring elementary through high school students in math and grading for Whitworth math professors. Through Whitworth’s School of Education, she gained classroom experience at three schools in Spokane and had the opportunity to spend a Jan Term teaching at a high school in Waianae, Hawaii. She just finished her student teaching at Lewis & Clark High School and is excited about her future as a secondary school math teacher.

ACADEMIC REGALIA
Academic regalia is a tradition dating from the Middle Ages, when long robes and hoods were everyday attire designed to protect against the cold and drafts of medieval university halls. It remains the daily costume at some British universities. The many variations in academic dress are not incidental, but are rich in meaning. Each costume represents both the degree held by the wearer and the institution that awarded it. Though European universities have been free to adopt any style they choose, a considerable degree of standardization has been achieved in the United States. Following are some of the elements of the code of academic dress. HOOD: The hood, which is draped down the back, carries more symbolic significance than any other part of the costume. The border, extending over the shoulders to meet in a “V” at the front, indicates by its colors the discipline in which the degree was earned. Colors for some of the faculties are white (arts, letters, humanities); cream (social science); dark blue (philosophy); light blue (education); scarlet (theology); pink (music); golden yellow (natural science); lemon (library science); nugget (business, accounting); and sage green (physical education). The lining of the hood, partly exposed, is in the colors of the degree-granting institution (for Whitworth, crimson and black). Doctoral hoods are longer than those of master’s degree recipients and have a wider border. Recipients of the bachelor’s degree do not wear hoods. GOWN: Black gowns are the rule, but a few universities use other colors. A doctor’s gown is recognizable by the three horizontal velvet bars on each sleeve, either in black or in the color of the discipline in which the degree was granted. Typically, a doctor’s gown also has velvet panels down the front. The typical gowns for master’s degree and baccalaureate degree candidates do not have decorated panels or sleeves. CAP: The familiar hard-topped mortarboard, or Oxford cap, has long been standard, but a soft tam is increasingly common. The tassels are usually black or the color of the discipline. The tassel on a doctor’s cap is usually metallic gold.
THE BANNERS
The banners carry the Celtic cross, representing the university’s Scottish Presbyterian heritage, and the seal of Whitworth University. These banners are a permanent part of the commencement exercises.
LAND ACKNOWLEDGMENT
As followers of Christ, we are compelled to act justly, love mercy and walk humbly with God. It is our love of God and neighbor that leads us to offer the following statement: a xest sxľxaľt. Welcome, everyone. We acknowledge that we . . . gather today on the traditional homelands of the four bands of the Spokane Tribe of Indians: Sntut úlix. w, Snx. w méne , ’ Scqesciłni and Sčewile . Since time immemorial, the Spokane Tribe of Indians has lived prosperously on this land, identifying themselves as “sqélix. w,” or “flesh of the land.” We pay our respects to their Elders – past, present and emerging – and we acknowledge their continuing connection with the land, waters and culture. We honor God with gratitude for the land itself and the peoples who have fished, hunted, harvested and gathered here for generations. This acknowledgment recognizes the first custodians of this land, the suffering they endured, and the continued restoration and healing needed. It is important to understand the history that has brought us to reside here, because such understanding fosters a more united community that honors and embraces the first peoples of Spokane. We thank the Spokane Tribe members for sharing their stories, culture and language to develop this welcome. lem lmtš šey’ u hoy. 28
THE QUASQUICENTENNIAL PINECONE
Whitworth’s ceremonial icon, to be carried at commencement, convocations and other official university ceremonies, is the Quasquicentennial Pinecone. The icon was commissioned and presented to the university by President Beck A. Taylor to honor the institution’s 125th anniversary, in 2015. It was designed by Professor of Art Katie Creyts and was first used at Spring Convocation 2016. The icon depicts the cone of the ponderosa pine, long a symbol of Whitworth’s beautiful tree-lined campus. Crafted of cast bronze and glass, the Quasquicentennial Pinecone reflects a lamp of learning as well as the characteristics of the cone itself. The top of the piece includes a quotation from the original 1890 Whitworth College catalog, and 12 of the cast-glass pinecone scales feature moral and intellectual virtues that reflect the Whitworth community’s highest aspirations for its members. The text for each of the virtues was handwritten by a different member of the Whitworth community, signifying that from many voices and perspectives, we come together as a single body, united in celebration of and dedication to Whitworth’s Christian mission.
LATIN HONORS
Latin honors at Whitworth University are based on the traditional Latin wording: cum laude (with honor), magna cum laude (with high honor), and summa cum laude (with highest honor). The criteria for these honors are based on the grade-point average earned at Whitworth, as follows: cum laude, 3.50 and above; magna cum laude, 3.75 and above; summa cum laude, 3.90 and above. Baccalaureate candidates wear honor cords with their caps and gowns. Bronze cords denote cum laude, silver cords indicate magna cum laude, and gold cords signify summa cum laude.
PROVOST’S HONOR ROLL
Membership in the Provost’s Honor Roll is granted to every degree-seeking undergraduate student completing the previous semester with a minimum grade-point average of 3.75 for a minimum courseload of 12 graded semester credits.
PRESIDENT’S CUP
Eligibility for the President’s Cup is based on a 4.0 cumulative GPA for graduating seniors who have completed 126 credits toward the baccalaureate degree at Whitworth University by the end of the Jan Term of their graduating year.
GEORGE WHITWORTH HONORS
Students graduating in the George Whitworth Honors Program have maintained a cumulative 3.75 GPA and have completed 18 credits in the George Whitworth Honors Program in four of the following categories: honors courses/seminars, honors research project, honors internship, honors off-campus study, honors creative project or honors Core.
CLARIFICATIONS
(1) Participation in commencement and inclusion in the commencement program do not guarantee official granting of a degree. The registrar’s office verifies completion of all coursework and degree requirements for baccalaureate degree candidates. The graduate office or specific graduate program performs the same function for master’s degree candidates. (2) The official document verifying degree completion is the Whitworth University transcript, signed and sealed by the registrar. (3) Academic honors appearing in this program are based upon credits completed prior to the spring semester. Final honors recognition will appear on transcripts and is based upon Whitworth academic credits.
