COMMENCEMENT SPEAKER 2021 Professor of History Dale Soden began his career at Whitworth in 1985. He graduated from Pacific Lutheran University in 1973 and went on to the University of Washington, where he earned a master’s degree followed by a Ph.D. in history in 1980. He previously taught at Pacific Lutheran and Oklahoma Baptist University. Soden’s career at Whitworth has included positions as the director of continuing studies, the director of strategic planning during the Bill Robinson presidency, and the founding director of the Weyerhaeuser Center for Christian Faith & Learning, a role in which he has continued. However, his greatest passion has been teaching history. His courses have included the History of the Vietnam War, Pacific Northwest History, U.S. History in a Global Context, American Popular Culture, Great Trials in American History, and the History of Financial Collapse in America. He is perhaps best known for his desire to find any excuse to lead his students in singing folk protest songs that relate in some way to the content of his courses. His scholarship has focused on religious activism in the Pacific Northwest and the history of Whitworth University. He has served as the campus historian for more than 30 years and wrote A Venture of Mind and Heart: An Illustrated History of Whitworth. He has written two other monographs, The Reverend Mark Matthews: An Activist in the Progressive Era and Outsiders in a Promised Land: Religious Activists in Pacific Northwest History. He has written numerous scholarly articles, mostly on topics related to Pacific Northwest history. This past year, the Washington State Historical Society awarded Soden the Robert Gray Medal, its highest honor, for his work in Pacific Northwest history. He is married to Professor Kathy Storm and has two children, Joel and Marta, and four grandchildren, Arlo, Cora, Kira and Evan.

AWARD RECIPIENTS George Frederick Whitworth Medal: Leonard A. Oakland, Ph.D. Professor of English Leonard Oakland has taught at Whitworth since 1966. He teaches English literature and film studies and was on the first Core 250 team, a position he has occupied in the ensuing 50 years. Oakland is known for his classes on the epics of Homer, Virgil and Dante, as well as 19th-century Russian novels and 17th-century British poetry (emphasizing Milton’s Paradise Lost). He has worked on several Hollywood films and continues to host and produce a classical music program on KPBX, the National Public Radio affiliate in Spokane. Oakland received a bachelor of arts from Westmont College and a Ph.D. from Washington State University. Distinguished Community Service Award: Dr. Bob Lutz Dr. Bob Lutz, M.D., MPH, is a board-certified family medicine physician and holds adjunct faculty positions with the University of Washington School of Medicine and the Washington State University Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine. He received his medical degree from Temple University in 1988 and a master of public health from the University of Arizona in 2003. Upon moving to Spokane in 2004 with his wife, Amy, he served on the Spokane Regional Health District’s Board of Health for eight years, until being appointed as the health officer for Spokane County from 2017-20. He currently serves as the health officer for Asotin County; is a member of the Washington State Board of Health, representing local public health; and is the medical advisor for the Washington Department of Health’s COVID-19 response.

PRESIDENT’S CUP RECIPIENTS Esther Brown was born and raised in Taiwan and grew up in a multicultural community. She majored in communication at Whitworth, where she was involved in student journalism, music ensembles, leadership groups, clubs and student government, and was awarded various scholarships. Her coursework helped her discover her passion for storytelling – to share the voices and stories of the unheard and overlooked, report with integrity, and inform through truth and facts. Her op-ed about the impacts of culture on COVID-19 responses was published in The Spokesman-Review this year. Her identity as a biracial person has fostered her desire to explore topics of race and culture, and she seeks to pursue an intersection of these topics in a journalism career. Simon Mai was born and raised in Spokane and is a history major with a keen interest in the history of Spokane and the Pacific Northwest. Throughout his education he has been determined to succeed and overcome perceived limits. This translated into the various academic accolades he has received over the years. As satisfying as those accolades were, they could not compare to the people and friends he has known and met along the way who have continually inspired and encouraged him. These include his parents, teachers like Mr. Michael Dewey and Professor Dale Soden, and the numerous peers he has had the great privilege of knowing. They have all made home here in Spokane a blessing. Hannah Mumm, of Greenacres, Wash., is a double major in English and French with minors in political science and women’s & gender studies. She is graduating with George Whitworth Honors. As an undergraduate, she completed a semester abroad at Aix-Marseille University in Southern France, where she took courses on French literature. She also participated in an externship at the Smithsonian Institute over Jan Term. At Whitworth, she edited creative nonfiction for the literary journal Rock & Sling. She worked for the admissions office for all four years and also worked on occasion as a translator. For example, she spent one semester as an archival translator, translating Belgian monks’ centuries-old mementos from French into English with the late Kathy Watts, assistant professor and librarian. Her favorite on-campus opportunity was to complete a Weyerhaeuser Younger Scholars fellowship with Assistant Professor of English Jake Andrews.
22
Under his guidance, she wrote two short stories, one of which was published by The Allegheny Review. Until COVID-19 hit, she was a volunteer for Whitworth Presbyterian Church’s children’s ministries. She loves cooking, swimming and especially writing. Scott Penner, of Olympia, Wash., is a biology major with a chemistry minor who plans to apply to medical school this year. He was a member of the Whitworth men’s soccer team and was captain for three years. He is also co-founder of Whitworth’s Mountain Biking Club. He is currently working as a phlebotomist as he applies to medical school. Alyssa Peterson, of Vancouver, Wash., is a business administration major with a concentration in finance, a subject she has thoroughly enjoyed studying over the past four years. Her most pivotal connections at Whitworth have been through the Whitworth Student Investment Group (WSIG), the Women in Finance club and Life Groups. She had the privilege of serving in multiple leadership positions within WSIG (president, chief investment officer, etc.) and learned so much through working with her peers and the faculty advisor. The honor and responsibility of helping care for a small piece of the university’s endowment is not lost on her and the club’s fellow members, and she has been encouraged by the dedication of other members. Through the group and gracious donors, the club got to have many professionals on campus for lunches and discussions, and even traveled to New York City for a conference. A subset of group members launched the Women in Finance club last year with the goal of welcoming everyone who has interest and teaching analytical financial skills. Her connections at Whitworth not only strengthened her academically, but spiritually and relationally as well. Weekly Life Groups were a wonderful space to connect with students of different ages and areas of study. She was thankful to be led in Scripture by welcoming professors, often in their own homes.
PRESIDENT’S CUP RECIPIENTS Delaney Plumb was born and raised in Spokane and is a double major in secondary education and Spanish (education track). Ever since her mom began working at Whitworth when she was 8 years old, she planned on being a Whitworth Pirate someday. She started studying Spanish in eighth grade and is passionate about using this gift that God has given her to positively impact others, whether that is through teaching, ministry or whatever else God may call her to in the future. One of her favorite activities is playing intramural volleyball with friends. She worked as a counselor at Camp Spalding every summer during her time at Whitworth and was blessed with the opportunity to point young people toward Jesus through that process. Rachel Quick, of Bonney Lake, Wash., is a biology major and Spanish minor. She has enjoyed exploring opportunities in the medical field throughout her time at Whitworth by volunteering in local emergency departments and working as a nursing assistant. She participated in Jubilation Dance Ministry as a ballet teacher for three years and served as artistic director for the club during her senior year. Some of her fondest memories from her time at Whitworth include studying abroad in Europe through the Core 250 program and in Costa Rica through the Spanish for Health Professions program. Since finishing her degree in the fall of 2020, she has started working as a program associate for Innovia Foundation in Spokane.
Kassina Schmitz, of Jefferson City, Mont., is a biology major. She enjoys spending time outdoors hiking and having adventures with her family and friends. She is excited to embark on a new adventure after Whitworth as she moves to Indiana to attend graduate school. Thomas Symons, of Seattle, is a chemistry major on the biochemistry track. One of his main interests at Whitworth has been playing for the Ultimate Frisbee team, for which he was a third-year captain this past year. He was a drummer in the Whitworth Jazz Ensemble and played drums on a Hosanna worship team for campus ministry. He also spent two years as a WyldLife leader at Glover Middle School. During his junior year he conducted research with Associate Professor Kerry Breno, working on luminescent rhenium complexes. He traveled to Vancouver to present this research at the Murdock College Research Conference, and he was almost able to present at the ACS National Meeting in Philadelphia, which unfortunately was canceled due to COVID-19. Some of his favorite memories at Whitworth include traveling around the West Coast for Ultimate and Spikeball tournaments, spending Jan Term in Europe for Core 250, and getting to play jazz with saxophonist Joshua Redman at the Fox Theater. After graduation, he will take a gap year to work as a medical scribe before pursuing his goal of becoming a pediatrician.
Kyle Schmit was raised in Eagle, Idaho, where he was active in the Meridian FFA chapter and state politics. He is a business administration major with a concentration in finance and an accounting minor. After coming to Whitworth, he quickly became involved in the Whitworth Student Investment Group, where he served as industrials sector head and CFO. He was also honored to be a part of Whitworth’s 2020 Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) Institute Research Challenge team that went on to compete in the Americas competition. Above all, Kyle is proudest to have founded Camp Kesem at Whitworth, a chapter of a larger national organization that provides a free summer camp for children who have been affected by a parent’s cancer, following his dad’s cancer diagnosis in the spring of 2020.

ACADEMIC REGALIA
Academic regalia is a tradition dating from the Middle Ages, when long robes and hoods were everyday attire designed to protect against the cold and drafts of medieval university halls. It remains the daily costume at some British universities. The many variations in academic dress are not incidental, but are rich in meaning. Each costume represents both the degree held by the wearer and the institution that awarded it. Though European universities have been free to adopt any style they choose, a considerable degree of standardization has been achieved in the United States. Following are some of the elements of the code of academic dress. HOOD: The hood, which is draped down the back, carries more symbolic significance than any other part of the costume. The border, extending over the shoulders to meet in a “V” at the front, indicates by its colors the discipline in which the degree was earned. Colors for some of the faculties are white (arts, letters, humanities); cream (social science); dark blue (philosophy); light blue (education); scarlet (theology); pink (music); golden yellow (natural science); lemon (library science); nugget (business, accounting); and sage green (physical education). The lining of the hood, partly exposed, is in the colors of the degree-granting institution (for Whitworth, crimson and black). Doctoral hoods are longer than those of master’s degree recipients and have a wider border. Recipients of the bachelor’s degree do not wear hoods. GOWN: Black gowns are the rule, but a few universities use other colors. A doctor’s gown is recognizable by the three horizontal velvet bars on each sleeve, either in black or in the color of the discipline in which the degree was granted. Typically, a doctor’s gown also has velvet panels down the front. The typical gowns for master’s degree and baccalaureate degree candidates do not have decorated panels or sleeves. CAP: The familiar hard-topped mortarboard, or Oxford cap, has long been standard, but a soft tam is increasingly common. The tassels are usually black or the color of the discipline. The tassel on a doctor’s cap is usually metallic gold.
THE BANNERS
The banners carry the Celtic cross, representing the university’s Scottish Presbyterian heritage, and the seal of Whitworth University. These banners are a permanent part of the commencement exercises.
LAND ACKNOWLEDGMENT
As followers of Christ, we are compelled to act justly, love mercy and walk humbly with God. It is our love of God and neighbor that leads us to offer the following statement: a xest sxľxaľt. Welcome, everyone. We acknowledge that we . . . gather today on the traditional homelands of the four bands of the Spokane Tribe of Indians: Sntut úlix. w, Snx. w méne , ’ Scqesciłni and Sčewile . Since time immemorial, the Spokane Tribe of Indians has lived prosperously on this land, identifying themselves as “sqélix. w,” or “flesh of the land.” We pay our respects to their Elders – past, present and emerging – and we acknowledge their continuing connection with the land, waters and culture. We honor God with gratitude for the land itself and the peoples who have fished, hunted, harvested and gathered here for generations. This acknowledgment recognizes the first custodians of this land, the suffering they endured, and the continued restoration and healing needed. It is important to understand the history that has brought us to reside here, because such understanding fosters a more united community that honors and embraces the first peoples of Spokane. We thank the Spokane Tribe members for sharing their stories, culture and language to develop this welcome. lem lmtš šey’ u hoy. 26
THE QUASQUICENTENNIAL PINECONE
Whitworth’s ceremonial icon, to be carried at commencement, convocations and other official university ceremonies, is the Quasquicentennial Pinecone. The icon was commissioned and presented to the university by President Beck A. Taylor to honor the institution’s 125th anniversary, in 2015. It was designed by Professor of Art Katie Creyts and was first used at Spring Convocation 2016. The icon depicts the cone of the ponderosa pine, long a symbol of Whitworth’s beautiful tree-lined campus. Crafted of cast bronze and glass, the Quasquicentennial Pinecone reflects a lamp of learning as well as the characteristics of the cone itself. The top of the piece includes a quotation from the original 1890 Whitworth College catalog, and 12 of the cast-glass pinecone scales feature moral and intellectual virtues that reflect the Whitworth community’s highest aspirations for its members. The text for each of the virtues was handwritten by a different member of the Whitworth community, signifying that from many voices and perspectives, we come together as a single body, united in celebration of and dedication to Whitworth’s Christian mission.
LATIN HONORS
Latin honors at Whitworth University are based on the traditional Latin wording: cum laude (with honor), magna cum laude (with high honor), and summa cum laude (with highest honor). The criteria for these honors are based on the grade-point average earned at Whitworth, as follows: cum laude, 3.50 and above; magna cum laude, 3.75 and above; summa cum laude, 3.90 and above. (3) Academic honors appearing in this program are based upon credits completed prior to the spring semester. Final honors recognition will appear on transcripts and is based upon Whitworth academic credits.
