Whitworth alumni family,

You are receiving this Whitworth Today supplement –featuring Class Notes and In Memoriam – in place of the traditional fall magazine. Significant and ongoing increases in paper and postage costs have required that we limit publication to one issue rather than two. We are eager to send you a full-to-bursting issue of Whitworth Today in spring 2023!

Until then, Julie Riddle, Editor

Ryan West

I’m not a Whitworth alum but I’m a big fan and my spouse, Kandy (Brody) West ’00, is an alumna. I was wearing a Whitworth T-shirt and was stopped in the stairwell of a hotel in Spain by someone who had attended Whitworth in the 1980s. Small-world moment.

Lynn Noland, Director of Sponsored Programs 19982019

Years ago, we were at a little deli in Berkeley, Calif., where our son was in grad school, and started talking to the couple next to us. They had just dropped their daughter off for her freshman year. They introduced her twin brother, and he said that he didn’t want to go to the same school so he was going to

Whitworth. When I told them I worked at Whitworth, we asked for a table for six, and we have been friends ever since.

A couple summers ago we went camping at Ohanapecosh Campground [Mount Rainier National Park] with some friends. She began teaching at Whitworth in 1966, one year after her spouse, Professor Emeritus of Biology Howard Stien, arrived to chair the biology department. Pat earned her MAT from Whitworth in 1982 and did further graduate study at San Francisco State University and the University of London.

Pat taught for 27 years, serving as department chair for the 10 years preceding her retirement in 1993. A distinguished voice performer, she taught courses including Storytelling, Oral Interpretation, Voice for the Performer, Chamber Theatre and Story Theatre. narration for Whitworth’s Christmas Festival choir concerts for an incredible 30 years, from 1975-2005. Concertgoers can surely still recall her elegant voice and rich tones.
