On18 July, Marina Port Vell Barcelona announced that it has renewed its EMAS and ISO14001 environmental certifications, reinforcing its commitment to offering a quality service under strict sustainability standards. Specifically, the marina has certified its environmental responsibility and commitment, with the audit of the prestigious international certification entity LRQA. In addition, Marina Port Vell has certified its environmental management system with the most demanding requirements established by the European EMAS Regulation, a tool that allows evaluating, improving and publicising its environmental behaviour. This commitment by the marina to responsible environmental practices is in line with the ambitious Sustainability Master Plan that is now being implemented in line with the Sustainable Development Goals set by the United Nations.

Based on Environmental Social Governance criteria, it aims to reduce the carbon footprint and reinforce the commitment to increasingly sustainable practices. Marina Port Vell will foster a responsible business management model that guarantees its social and environmental commitment, creating long-term value.

Ignacio Erroz, General Manager, confirmed that the marina has always worked to ensure the best sustainable practices in its infrastructure, but now accepts that it is also essential to invest in key actions that pave the way for more sustainable innovations in the future. This not only benefits the marina’s workforce and the ecosystem around the marina, but also reflects its wider responsibility towards Barcelona, the Mediterranean and the entire community.

The pillars of the marina’s sustainability strategy are based on being an environmentally- responsible company, developing a social commitment to the environment and establishing a solid governance model. All this arises from three areas of influence: the Mediterranean; Barcelona; and the team that operates the marina. Thanks to this strategy, the marina is ready to deal with new trends in boating as and when they arise. These are likely to create a need for new experiences focused on a healthy lifestyle and also make it necessary to adapt infrastructure to accommodate increasingly innovative vessels with new sustainability requirements. For example, just a few months ago, the marina accommodated the ‘Artefact’, a superyacht with electric propulsion – one of the most sustainable vessels in the world.

St Helier Marina rebuild completed

Walcon

Marine has completed its role in the rebuild of the St Helier Marina on Jersey in the Channel Islands. The project involved a comprehensive like-for-like replacement with the new marina maintaining the configuration of approximately 250 berths across seven piers for boats up to 20-25 metres in length. There is also an additional walkway for alongside berthing by visiting yachts.

St Helier Marina was first opened in 1981 and this is its first major refurbishment. The project got underway in September, 2021, following a tender process that resulted in local firm Geomarine being appointed the main contractor to undertake the works. Walcon was subsequently appointed a specialist subcontractor.

The overall scope required the removal and replacement of the entire on-the-water infrastructure.

Green light for Port Takola expansion

Thailand’s Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Board has approved Port Takola Yacht Marina & Boatyard’s application for a marina expansion of up to 300 berths and 15,000 sq m of boatyard services.

The expansion will offer an extra-wide concrete pontoon to accommodate yachts from 10-45 metres. A work berth will be available on the Northern section of the marina harbour and the boatyard will increase its lifting capacity from 38 to 80 tonnes, while a boatshed will be available for refits of yachts up to 25 metres.

Phase one began operation in 2018 with 50 wet berths, 50 dry berths, a 38-tonne Roodberg trailer boat lift, fuel dock and café.

The marina recently expanded Pier G with 25 more berths, ranging from 15-45 metres.

This included all the pontoons, as well as the existing guide piles that had also reached the end of their serviceable lives. The two existing access bridges were refurbished and reinstated by Geomarine. In all, around £3.5 million was invested in

the project to enhance the facilities and the project was completed on time in May.

Five of the seven new piers have been constructed using Walcon’s aluminium System 2000 pontoons, while the two piers nearest to the

entrance to the basin in which the marina is situated use Walcon’s steel System 21 pontoons due to their more exposed location. As well as the walkways and finger pontoons, Walcon also supplied the new wall columns.

Public dock enhances Jacksonville Riverfront Park

The City of Jacksonville, Florida has the largest urban park system in the US. Enhancing its dynamic network of outdoor community spaces, the city is adding numerous docks along the St Johns River for visiting boaters and water taxis. The new Post Street location in the historic Riverside neighbourhood presented several engineering challenges that were easily overcome when the city chose a state-of-the-art SF Marina floating concrete dock array.

The Post Street boat landing site not only contends with a fastmoving river current, but also strong Southerly wave action. Coupled with the location being directly adjacent to underground utilities, the dock structure had to be built rock-solid to remain in place if a hurricane were to hit the area. The city specified that it would need to withstand 193 kph winds for two hours, with 3 metre storm surges.

Jacksonville-based Hal Jones Contractor, a division of Vecellio & Grogan, installed the two-part 29 metre long x 3 metre wide SF1230 HD pontoon and three SF1224 9.7 metre long x 2.4 metre wide fingers. The sections are joined together using SF Marina’s exceptionally reliable connector system that absorbs torsional tension and heavy loading. The array is designed to accommodate six vessels up to 15

metres in length.

To secure the structure, Hal Jones Contractor drove eight 0.5 metre steel piles over 12 metres deep into the rocky river bottom. This prevents the array moving and damaging the utility lines. Custom guides allow the pontoons to rise and fall smoothly with water level changes.

The dock array connects to the shoreline via an aluminium bridge and hinged gangway.

Shepperton Marina installs GRP grating

Anti-slip, Mini Mesh GRP grating supplied by Dura Composites has been installed at Shepperton Marina on the River Thames by Walcon Marine. The marina is superbly placed as a base for both upper and lower Thames cruising and was recently shortlisted for the TYHA UK Inland Marina of the Year Awards. Open seven days a week, the marina provides a range of secure moorings with electricity and water, as well as large servicing and repair workshops.

In August, 2021, Shepperton opened its innovative new berthing concept, known as ‘The Island’. This unique addition to Basin D features 26 new berths, accommodating vessels from 10-14 metres, set amongst a large circular pontoon area featuring Dura Composites’ Mini Mesh product in sand colour.

Dura Composites’ GRP grating is strong and durable and the antislip surface is tested to withstand even the wettest, oiliest and iciest conditions, thus ensuring a safe and highly durable walkway that

allows marina access throughout the year.

Available in a range of thicknesses and mesh sizes (many with a Class B fire rating) Dura’s grating products are easy to handle, making installation faster and more cost-effective.

They also require little to no maintenance over the course of their life-cycle, ensuring a noncorrosive surface that comes with a 25-year warranty.

Commenting on the project, Lisa Harris of Shepperton Marina said: “We chose the composite Dura grating for this project for a number of reasons, mainly the safety, low maintenance and aesthetic aspects.

“During the colder months when pontoons can become icy or slippery, the composite grating surface remains safe for our staff

and customers to walk on. In my opinion, from a health and safety point of view, you can’t beat it!

“Historically, we have spent a lot of time replacing wooden deck boards which we no longer have to do with this product, saving us both time and money, and many of our customers have already complimented us on how safe they feel walking on it.

“Thanks to the successful installation of our new ‘Island Berths’, we have now established a complete pontoon decking replacement programme where we will replace timber with GRP Dura grating and which we expect to be completed in the next couple of years.

“The Dura Composites team are always available to offer advice and assistance and provide an efficient and professional service.”

ICMS celebrates 20th anniversary at SIBS

Pontoon manufacturer and water access specialist, Inland and Coastal Marina Systems (ICMS), celebrated the company’s 20th anniversary by raising a glass of real Irish Guinness on its stand at the Southampton International Boat Show.

Born out of Banagher Precast Concrete (BPC), an Irish precast concrete manufacturer, which started producing concrete jetties in 1990, ICMS was set up by Oliver and Claire Shortall in 2002, while Oliver was still working for BPC.

“When I joined Banagher, it had just started developing floating jetties,” says Oliver. “I could see that there was a growing market for pontoons and

jetties in Ireland, but Banagher was focused on other sectors so when the opportunity arose for me to buy the jetty side of the business, we started Inland and Coastal.”

With demand strong and no other company manufacturing pontoons in Ireland, ICMS went from strength to strength. Based in Co. Offaly, the company opened offices in Lossiemouth, Scotland in 2015 and in Hamble, England in 2018.

Now employing over 50 people, ICMS designs, manufactures and installs pontoons and concrete breakwaters in marinas, yacht harbours and commercial ports worldwide, including Australia, France and Mexico.

of service and facilities and we are pleased that our efforts have been recognised with this award”.

Davies further noted, “There are over 200 Gold Anchor marinas accredited in 28 countries around the world, the program is really on the move and expanding in numbers.

To have our first New Zealand marina join the program shows the strength of the Gold Anchor brand as a credible way of communicating to potential customers the marina’s commitment to quality facilities and services. We look forward to more New Zealand marinas joining the program”.

“I’m delighted with how the business and our product portfolio have grown over the last 20 years,” continued Oliver. “Building on the development of the Glass Reinforced Concrete (GRC) decking and the first concrete breakwaters at BPC in 1998, we developed continuous concrete pontoons in 2013 and started our heavy-duty pontoon range in 2014, in addition to our standard leisure marina pontoons.

“Because we came out of Banagher Concrete, we’ve always taken the approach that every product we make should be built with robustness, so it’ll last. And today, that’s what people associate us with which has led to new business in the burgeoning offshore wind and renewables sector, building pontoons for crew transfer vessels (CTV) and operation and maintenance bases (O&M).”

Almarin acquires Aister’s marina business unit

An agreement has been reached with Aister for Almarin to acquire its marina business unit. With more than 30,000 metres of pontoons installed in 27 countries during the past 30 years, Aister Marinas has established a sound reputation in the construction of marinas and leisure harbours.

In recent years, however, the company has been focussing on the design and manufacture of aluminium boats and consequently the management has now taken the strategic decision to divest itself of the marina operation.

Since 1963 Walcon has proven itself to be a worldwide leader in the design, construction and installation of marinas and berthing facilities, with renowned quality and first class service.

First electric boat supercharger in Portugal

Riding the wave of e-marine innovation, Marina de Lagos leads the way in electric boating by becoming the first Aqua superPower marine fast charging destination in Portugal. The newly installed Aqua 75 supercharger at Marina de Lagos will be part of a growing regional charging network to be rolled out along the Algarve. In partnership with Galaxia Boats, Marina de Lagos hosted Portugal’s first all-electric boat show earlier this year, promoting a broad range of environmental boating solutions and the largest display yet of electric boats in Europe. Known for its modern facilities and technically-advanced boating ecosystem, Marina de Lagos has 460 berths and wants to become a leading centre for electric boating. Joining Aqua superPower’s global marine fast charge network is part of the marina’s commitment to drive

marine decarbonisation and reduce the impact of boating on the environment. Located on the Bay of Lagos at the heart of the historic old town of Lagos, Marina de Lagos has become a maritime gateway to the Atlantic Ocean. The new Aqua superPower marine fast charger at Marina de Lagos represents the first station of the network and charging corridor to be built out along the Algarve and Portuguese coast.

A maritime town with more than 2000 years of history, Lagos is one of the most visited cities in the Algarve and Portugal. Lagos has won several awards for its sustainable practices and has been selected for inclusion in the global atlas for sustainable tourism. More than 60% of its territory is a natural conservation area and all of its beaches, as well as Marina de Lagos, carry the Blue Flag.

“Marina de Lagos is thrilled to

be the first marina in Portugal to offer electric boat fast charging. This is a crucial step in our pioneering environmental protection plan, for which we have found the perfect partners in Aqua superpower and Galaxia Boats, who share our determination, experience and the commitment to greener boating and the environment. We know that electric boats are here now, and they require the reliable ‘plug and go’ fast charging infrastructure Aqua superPower provides,” said Martinho Fortunato, CEO of Marina de Lagos.

“One of the main areas of intervention that we have chosen as a priority in municipal activity is to make Lagos a sustainable territory, in parallel with economic, social and cultural development. It is, therefore, with great pride that we witness the installation of the first charger for electric vessels existing on

the Portuguese coast in Marina de Lagos. Without a doubt, it is an important move towards the transition away from fossil fuels and chemicals to non-polluting energy in the nautical world and will serve as a stimulus for the sector to consider its investment strategy going forwards. After all, this clean energy transition is the responsibility of us all, both individually and as a society. It is a future we have to pursue and help make a reality,” Confirmed Hugo Pereira, Mayor of Lagos.

“We are excited to work with such a visionary and revolutionary brand such as Aqua superPower and through our work together we have helped to facilitate the installation of Aqua’s rapid charger at Marina de Lagos, the first for the Algarve and for Portugal. This is an important step towards a greener, more sustainable future for generations to come, as well as the marine

industry. Aqua’s marine fast charging network will help to promote a new era in electric boating,” added Roman Wroath, Founder, Galaxia Boats.

“We are delighted to service Marina de Lagos as Portugal’s most progressive destination in setting a positive example with the promotion of clean electric boating and sustainable marina management. We share the marina’s mission to protect the oceans while enabling boat users to enjoy the water with the goal of sustainability and conservation of the environment in mind. By joining the Aqua superPower network, Marina de Lagos is able to meet the growing demand for electric boats and the infrastructure required to support them. We will be creating a fully built-out marine fast charging corridor and regional infrastructure along the Algarve, starting with Marina de Lagos as the first charging hub,” concluded Alex Bamberg, CEO of Aqua superPower.

Updated technology makes new Gobius Pro even better

The Gobius Pro, the latest version of the Gobius Tank Contents Monitoring System, uses a leap forward in technology to make it even better.

The sensor technology has been developed from a method of monitoring the contents of a fluid tank from the outside. This means that (unlike other measuring systems) the sensor never comes into contact with the tank contents. This avoids the risks of contamination, clogging or just the need for messy cleaning.

When adhered to the side of a tank a Gobius sensor exerts a short burst, small force on to its wall and causes it to vibrate. An accelerometer built into the sensor measures the vibrations caused by the force and transmits the signal to the sensor processor. The processor’s algorithm calculates a vibration value each time the sensor is activated, a measurement that can indicate the level of the fluid within the tank.

The Gobius Pro sensor is mounted on the outside of metal or plastic fluid tanks, eradicating the need for drilling holes and making it extremely easy to retrofit. It can either work alone or together with several additional sensors and has built-in Bluetooth communication for Android and iOS phones, eliminating the need for wiring between them and the display unit.

In addition, the sensor has two outputs for integration, e.g. in bus-systems, control relays, lights or buzzers. Useful for all kinds of fluids, such as fresh water, fuel, oil, grey/black water and waste water, up-to-date levels can be reported direct to an on-board display.

The LeeSan team, which has championed the product and has been distributing it since it was created, is happy to answer questions on the application, fitting and use of the new Gobius Pro.

Three generations: Bock Marine family buys Marine Travelift hoists

BockMarine, a full-service or do-it-yourself boatyard on 16 acres just North of Beaufort, North Carolina, recently took delivery of a Marine Travelift 85BFMII mobile boat hoist. This is the third Marine Travelift machine the yard has purchased, mirroring its three generations of Bock family ownership. The company was founded in 1975 as Roanoke Island Steel & Boat Works in Wanchese, NC, by Carl Bock, Jr. The company was well-known for building custom commercial fishing vessels and quickly outgrew its original one-acre site. In 1983, Bock, Jr. relocated to the current facility in Beaufort and changed the company’s name to

Bock Marine Builders Inc.

In 1988, prompted by a waning market for commercial fishing boats, Bock diversified with the purchase of its first Marine Travelift Machine, a 60 ton mobile boat hoist. This allowed the facility to expand its services to refit and repairs, haulouts and storage.

In 1995, Bock Marine upgraded to a 70BFM Marine Travelift (70 metric ton capacity) to meet the demands of a growing market. In the same year, the company completed its last new construction project. Fast-forward to present day and the facility is known worldwide as a destination for repairs and refit, still under the care of the Bock family:

Carl Bock Jr’s son Kenny and his wife, Nancy; and grandchildren Alex Bock and Carlee Robbins. To modernise the boatyard and increase both

efficiency and capability, Bock Marine decided to upgrade lifting equipment again, welcoming a new Marine Travelift 85BFMII (85 metric

12 MARINA INDUSTRY • AUGUST 2022 BOAT HOISTS

ton capacity) mobile boat hoist.

Bock Marine’s original 60 ton boat hoist has since been retired, but the ’95 70-ton machine is still in good working order, a testament to its quality and the company’s impeccable maintenance program. This new machine was delivered with wireless remote control and two-speed hoist options to increase efficiency and manoeuvrability.

In addition, Bock Marine’s 85BFMII was designed with the same footprint as the 70BFM to operate on the site’s existing piers. When asked to consider the similarities and differences between the two machines, Ryan Sherman, Yard Manager of Bock Marine Builders commented: “We were able to immediately start using the lift for launching and hauling because of the similar size and set-up. With the new lift we are able to do the same jobs with fewer people because of the wireless remote and we are able

to lift larger boats with more ease because of the increased weight capacity”.

He agreed the operators love the new machine, adding: “…the addition of the remote control was obviously a big change for our operators, but as soon as they started using it, they fell in love with the ability to get a 360 degree point of view during jobs. The remote makes lifting even the larger boats a much simpler task”.

Now equipped with two Marine

Travelift mobile boat hoist machines, the new 85BFMII will act as Bock Marine’s ‘daily driver’, while their 70BFM remains available for emergency haul-outs/repairs.

“The addition of our second lift has opened up our efficiency immensely. Running two machines at the same time has been an absolute game changer,” Sherman commented.

Future outlook for the facility includes aluminium boat construction. With increased lifting capability, the yard’s plan for Bock

Marine is a return to boat-building.

When asked about the delivery and set-up process, Kenny Bock, President of Bock Marine, confirmed: “Delivery and set-up were extremely efficient and professional. The Marine Travelift Tech arrived fully prepared and extremely knowledgeable, and made sure we were able to reach him with any questions or concerns after set-up”. Marine Travelift Inc

Greystones Harbour Marina, Ireland

Atthe heart of the Irish Sea and less than an hour from Dublin in County Wicklow, Greystones caters for both urban and rural tastes. The marina opened its doors in 2013 and has rapidly grown from 100 berths, so that it can now accommodate up to 250 sailing yachts and motorboats from 6-30 metres.

The marina is located at the heart of the spectacular development, which has involved a massive reconstruction and modernisation of Greystones’ centuries-old harbour. This is edged by beaches on either side with stunning views across Bray Head to the North, the Sugarloaf and Wicklow Mountains to the West and on a clear day when gazing across the Irish Sea to the East, the West coast of Wales can be spotted.

The high quality of service, excellent facilities and ease of access at Greystones Harbour

Marina have all contributed to the roaring success of this relatively new marina, which has seen occupancy nearing full capacity during the Summer months.

Visitors and berth-holders benefit from all the necessary facilities such as shore power and water services, toilets and shower facilities. The on-

site boatyard offers hard standing and there is a 30 ton mobile boat hoist available for haul-outs.

There is also free Wifi available to everyone, local maps and guides, and the friendly and helpful marina staff are always on hand to provide advice and guidance.

The marina complements the

many long-standing watersports clubs in the vicinity of which the Greystones sailing club is the most prominent with over 350 active members, thriving dinghy and cruiser sections and a phenomenal new club house. Other facilities in the harbour include an angling club, dive club, sea scouts and various water-based leisure activities.

The development of the marina was undertaken by BJ Marine Ltd, which has over 40 years’ experience in the marine industry. The company offers on-site boat sales and yacht brokerage. It is the largest yacht broker in Ireland, with offices in Belfast, across the Irish sea in Pwllheli, North Wales, and Cardiff, South Wales, as well as catering to the Mediterranean from an office in Malta.

Hamble Point Marina returns to its roots

MDL Marinas’ Hamble Point Marina, the UK’s central south coast hub of boating, is returning to its boat building roots with new tenants complementing existing onsite marine manufacturing businesses.

Fairey Marine called Hamble Point home for many years, launching the iconic Fairey Huntress in 1959. Cutting edge at the time, the Huntress is often thought of as the starting point for modern motor cruisers, with many planing powerboats and RIBs able to trace their DNA back to that initial constant deadrise hull form.

With such a history, it’s fitting that as boat building and marine

technology moves into a new era with sustainability at its heart, it’s being driven by forward thinking businesses based at MDL’s Hamble Point Marina where so much of it all began.

Innovative electric boat manufacturer RS Electric Boats has recently moved from its base in Romsey, which it shares with sister company RS Sailing, to a larger manufacturing facility at Hamble Point Marina.

Alex Newton-Southon, CEO –Design & Technologies at RS Electric Boats, comments: “With the Pulse 63 being production ready, we need manufacturing space that will support the volume of boats we

need to deliver. There is phenomenal demand from marine users wishing to switch to more environmentally sound ways to get out on the water and enjoy their boating, as well as from marine-based companies looking to meet sustainability targets.

“MDL and its Hamble Point Marina is an ideal solution for us. Not just the space available, but the location close to Southampton Water, giving us easy access to the Solent as well as MDL’s Ocean Village Marina, where we’ll be conducting boat tests and sea trails.

“We’re delighted to have a base with MDL, its commitment to the environment and dedication to

promoting greener boating through investment in electric charging technologies and initiatives such as the Green Tech Boat Show makes this move an even more positive one for us.”

RS Electric Boats joins established tenant ePropulsion UK, the UK & Ireland Distributor for ePropulsion, in the growing line-up of businesses dedicated to sustainable boating at the marina. Steve Bruce, managing director at ePropulsion UK, has been operating from Hamble Point since starting in the industry in 2005, originally in offices in Saltmakers House but now based in the Old Harbour Office.

“When the opportunity came up to

locate ourselves in the Old Harbour Office I could not think of a more visible and distinctive location on the Hamble,” Steve says. “Hamble Point Marina is ideal due to its easy access from London with easy access to the river and the Solent for boat testing and every possible service and facility we might require available onsite. Our facility at Hamble Point Marina is for displaying and demonstrating our marine electric drive trains.

“The facility is available to anyone promoting our zero emission propulsion solutions and is ideal for product launches, open days, training etc. For some time now we have been actively encouraging other like-minded companies with

an interest in transitioning to electric propulsion to locate themselves at Hamble Point Marina and we are now starting to see this happen.

“MDL is also keen to support the transition to zero emission propulsion with dedicated charging facilities and we are now putting together a schedule to convert the existing workboat fleet with electric propulsion.”

Supporting its international expansion plans, Dromeus Yachts has also moved its head office from Turkey to Hamble Point, leasing 424sq feet of office space in the marina’s Saltmakers House.

“We want to build Dromeas to be a worldwide brand, thus it made sense

to move the head office from Turkey to the UK, especially Southampton, because of the size of the industry here, to widen opportunities within the industry,” says Vicky Farrow, international sales and marketing director at Dromeas Yachts.

“Hamble Point Marina offers a large community of marine businesses so making the move to the marina was the right opportunity to be in proximity with others and grow our dealer network. The marina offers good connections to the UK marine industry which is now a huge focus of our operations as a UK company and office.”

But it’s not just the boat builders who have recognised the strategic

benefits of being based at Hamble Point Marina. Attracting businesses from across all sectors of the marine industry, Hamble Point Marina also hosts multiple new yacht dealerships as well as second-hand boat brokerages and boat clubs.

Besides its 230 first class berths, Hamble Point Marina is a marine service centre, offering excellent maintenance and repair facilities. As well as a wide, easy access slipway with ample space for car parking and trailer storage, there is a 75 ton boat hoist and a four ton crane for masts and engines.

Fully-electric boat hoist Roto-moulded buoy: two options

High Buoys from Marinaquip Ltd come in two options: the HB1250 ‘high neck’; and the HB580 ‘dish top’. Both designs consist of two high quality, roto-moulded polyethylene halfbuoys bolted together.

The split design provides two independent, fully-enclosed chambers, thus greatly increasing buoyancy integrity and removing the need for additional internal foaming.

‘Dish top’ mooring buoys have been designed to provide direct connection to the top mooring line and chain via an integral heavy duty diamond shackle plate. Interlocking float sections reduce the number of fasteners required, giving easy access to mooring lines, shackles and swivels.

The first fully-electric boat hoist from Italian manufacturer Boat Lift is a revolutionary project, pioneering a brand-new path in boat handling and lifting. The Model BL15TLE is a cutting-edge innovation, capable of opening up an entire market oriented to sustainability and zero-emissions targets.

The exponential development in terms of electrical component performances has made it possible

to go to market with equipment able to meet customers’ needs, especially concerning battery runtime. Close co-operation with its suppliers has enabled Boat Lift to ensure a non-stop day-shift.

In addition, the machine is equipped with an on-board battery charger, allowing a 0-100% recharge cycle of just two hours.

First Green Innovator Award presented at MDL boat show

The first Green Innovator Award was presented at MDL’s Green Tech Boat Show on 7 June to exhibitor ePropulsion UK by technology and motorsports presenter, Nikki Dean. The aim of this new award, which is voted for by the public, is to shine a light on products and services, from both the start-ups and established companies exhibiting at the show that are truly pioneering in sustainable innovation and design.

“We’re delighted to win the first Green Innovator Award, especially with the quality of product and innovation being shown by the other companies here at this year’s Green Tech Boat Show,” said Steve Bruce from ePropulsion UK, the distributor of ePropulsion’s electric marine products across the country. “We’ve been pushing sustainable boating and electric propulsion since 2014 and we’re pleased to be recognised for our endeavours in this arena.”

Coming in a very close second was Pixii Electric Boats, showcasing its pioneering electric boats built using recycled materials. Ecomotus, with its catalytic hydrogen system designed to reduce emissions and work in harmony with existing internal combustion engines, was in third place.

The Green Tech Boat Show, which highlighted the boating industry’s eco-friendly products and services, took place at MDL’s Queen Anne’s Battery marina in Plymouth and was 30% bigger than last year. With 30 exhibitors and over 600 people attending the two-day show, MDL has deemed the event a huge success in bringing together green businesses and potential buyers and boating enthusiasts keen to really understand the sustainable options available to them.

“We’re delighted with how the show is growing and becoming such an important platform for the marine industry to show how it’s

innovating to help combat climate change,” stated Tim Mayer, Sales and Marketing Director at MDL.

“It’s wonderful to see the number of exhibitors increasing and whether they’re start-ups or established businesses expanding their portfolios, they all have one thing in common – a passion to make boating more sustainable, so that it can be enjoyed for years to come.”

Exhibiting at the show for the first time, RanMarine Technology, showcasing its waterborne waste collecting WasteShark, agreed that the importance of events like the Green Tech Boat Show in making the public and wider industry aware of the progress being made cannot be overstated.

Darren Kirby, Sales Director, commented: “Given RanMarine Technology is now focusing on the UK market, it’s these types of events that are so important for us to see how the industry looks, where we fit in and what potential

opportunities exist. It really is encouraging to see the level of innovation and talk to like-minded industry professionals about the benefits we can have collectively on our environments”.

Boating systems specialist Vetus is already planning on exhibiting next year. “We felt the show was rewarding, with interest in repowers and new-build projects from both trade and public,” said Richard Lythgoe, Area Sales Manager. “We feel the marine industry is following the automotive industry in terms of green technology and feel the demand for more environmentallyfriendly products will only increase in the future.”

New to this year’s show was the Innovation Hub, sponsored by the University of Plymouth. Throughout the two-day show, marine industry thought leaders and researchers gave a series of informative talks on research projects currently underway to safeguard the marine environment, while a selection

of the eco-exhibitors explained the sustainability benefits of their products and how they enable people to have a more environmentally-friendly boating experience.

“We’ve had a great few days at The Green Tech Boat Show,” confirmed Kate Fortnam, The Green Blue’s Campaign Manager.

“It has been an ideal opportunity for us to meet with like-minded organisations and businesses, all striving for the same objective of finding greener solutions for boat users.

“It has also been a fantastic forum for us to share environmental best practice with boaters. We were also able to shine a spotlight on the exciting new sustainable products available via The Green Blue Business Directory. Here’s to Green Tech Boat Show 2023.”

keynote speech at METSTRADE

The renowned METSTRADE Breakfast Briefing is the not-to-be-missed opening for three days of the world’s largest gathering of marine professionals. In ‘Paragon or Pariah? Sustainability Challenges and Opportunities from the Sky to the Sea’, Combs will explain a key takeaway from his experience at Ampaire – to start small and iterate with the technology and infrastructure that exists today, rather than waiting for silver bullet solutions.

Udo Kleinitz, Secretary-Generaloft ICOMIA, stated: “We are pleased to welcome Cory Combs at the 2022 Breakfast Briefing. METSTRADE and ICOMIA constantly aim to be at the forefront of sustainability across the sector. Both aviation and leisure marine industries are exploring de-carbonisation strategies and face similar challenges. I am excited to hear about lessons learned and discuss how to better achieve sustainability across the entire marine industry”.

Cory Combs is the co-founder of aviation electric propulsion pioneer, Ampaire, which is hitting news headlines around the globe for its

rapid evolution of hybrid-powered small passenger and freight planes. Its testbed Electric EEL, based on the proven Cessna 337 Skymaster, is demonstrating fuel savings of 40%.

Ampaire has already secured orders from airlines for hybrid adaptions of existing small commuter planes, which are planned to enter service within the next three years.

Combs graduated from Stanford University with Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Mechanical Engineering. He worked as an R&D engineer for a cleantech start-up and then on X-plane projects for Northrop Grumman prior to cofounding Ampaire in 2016.

Speaking about the opportunities for shared learning across maritime and aerospace, he said: “I am honoured to speak at METSTRADE’s 2022 Keynote Speech. The marine

leisure industry shares many challenges with aviation, especially small aircraft, in terms of public perception and difficulty in going green. In aviation, there is the flightshaming movement and recently there has been no small amount of boat-shaming too. The marine leisure industry, like aerospace, will stick out like a sore thumb unless we show the way towards a cleaner future. At Ampaire we’ve learned big lessons on electrifying aircraft that are applicable to marine applications. Both industries are well-positioned to kickstart the technologies and supply chain required to achieve sustainability. The only option neither sector has is business as usual”.
