THE HANDMADE ISLE

The Handmade Isle Against the winter landscapes, raw coastlines and shifting light of the Isle of Wight, resides an enviable community of artisans and contemporary makers. From bold ceramics and bespoke furniture, to delicate jewellery made from sea glass and silver, this is the perfect place to pick up imaginative handmade gifts that come from the heart and tell a tale.

Food and drink … Take a dash of creativity, a twist of historic magic and a good squeeze of handmade eatables and you’ll find yourself in the delicious Rectory Mansion, Brading. Here you can immerse your senses in an onsite chocolate factory and pick up some of the best handmade consumables that the Isle of Wight has to offer. Winter warming gifts include Tipsy Wight vodka (is it the bottles that are wonky – or you?), Wild Island oils and Isle of Wight Mermaids Gin, flavoured from Island grown hops and hand-picked rock samphire, sourced on the local chalk cliffs of Ventnor Bay.

Furnace and fire … If you’re transfixed when watching craftspeople and value the story behind your purchases, a visit to Arreton Barns is a must. Tucked in the heart of the Arreton Valley, this industrial nest of working studios is home to a diverse range of craftsmen and women who are more than happy to chat while they work. This is a great place to buy bespoke ceramic house signs, handmade lamps, rice jewellery and delicate treasures created by skilled

glassblowers, Timothy Harris of Isle of Wight Studio Glass and Paul Critchley of Sculptglass. Should you find that glassblowing furnaces fire you up, both sides of the Island are sure to delight ... see stunning pieces inspired by local landscapes which are hand blown by the Evans family at Glory Art Glass in Sandown or watch artisans at work over at the The Needles’ Alum Bay Glass shop.

Earth and clay … Nestled within the historic Quay Arts Centre, in what was once a bonded warehouse, you’ll find an elegant boutique that showcases locally made jewellery, ceramics and children’s crafts. An array of greetings cards featuring local artists’ work, felted textiles and delightful ‘grown-up dolls’ share shelf space with ceramics produced at the nearby Jubilee Stores. Creative workshops in pottery, lino pressing, book making and more are held at the Quay Arts Centre, providing an unusual gift idea for crafty people ... and the café is good too.

Bowled over by earthenware and clay? Slip down to Tregear Pottery in Niton, where you will find a beautiful range of hand-thrown stone pottery inspired by silver and grey Isle of Wight landscapes. Here, you’ll be entering the realm of Turner Prize-winning artist, David Firmstone, who was so enchanted by the “constantly shifting light” of the Island, he set up his home and studio here. You can witness these same shifting lights as you travel west, along the Military Road to Isle of Wight Pearl. Positioned between countryside and rugged coast, this elegant boutique offers a treasure trove of pearl-inspired jewellery and a gorgeous café to sit and gaze out at the dramatic winter skies.

Ink and thread … Drawn in by inks and illustration? Spend a few hours in the ancient harbour towns of Bembridge, Cowes or Yarmouth, where the yacht masts and pretty buildings are almost artwork themselves. Meander down narrow lanes and cobbled streets, where a feast of galleries exhibit handmade and hand-printed scarves, knitted wire sculptures and pieces from quirky artists. Alternatively, head inland and visit Tapnell Farm. What was once the Island’s largest dairy farm has diversified into a cool new restaurant, family park and wonderful gift shop selling textiles, prints, paintings and illustrations from the finest makers. 5 reasons to buy handmade this season: Handmade is the ultimate buy for savvy shoppers who want to avoid mass-produced products and with so many extra benefits thrown in, it truly is the gift that keeps on giving. Here’s why:

3rd & 4th, 10th & 11th, 17th & 18th and 21st – 24th December An unmissable Christmas activity for all the family. Watch Santa’s presents arrive by train, browse the bustling market, explore the charming winter wonderland and laugh along with jolly festive entertainment. All before snuggling up for a cosy trip on the steam train.

1. You support local artisans, and therefore their local economy and community. 2. You acquire high-quality items that are built to last. Many manufactured items have a shelf life, but artisans want their products to have longevity. 3. Handmade gifts, fashion items and home accessories are generally cool, trendy, unique, and will have friends and family asking: “Where can I get one?”. 4. Handmade helps the environment. A world away from waste-producing factories and never shipped from distant countries using fuel and energy; buying handmade reduces your carbon footprint. 5. What is nicer than to buy a product you love – and get to know the person who made it? Instead of battling the crowds in packed high street stores, buy handmade items at local craft fairs and boutiques and build new friendships as you shop.

CASTLES & SEA FORTS

C ASTL ES & SEA FO RTS

Carisbrooke Castle at night

Historically the Isle of Wight has long been a first line of defence against invading forces. For hundreds of years castles and forts have been built to repel uninvited visitors and today the Island’s scenery is dotted with the remains of more than 20 in various states of repair.

who shifted the emphasis for defence on the Isle of Wight towards the coast. As well as Yarmouth, new castles were built in Sandown and Cowes during the 1500s to defend against an invasion threat from France. Only Sandown Fort saw any action though when hundreds of French troops invaded the Isle of Wight in 1545, but were eventually defeated.

From St Helens’ sea fort in the east to the Needles Battery on the western tip of the Island, they now all provide the opportunity for adventure and discovery. Invading forces, as long ago as the Vikings, valued the Island as a bridgehead for invading the mainland, which they attempted in the 4th century. Most recently Hitler had detailed strategies to use the Island as a key part of his invasion plans during World War II. Grandly located at the heart of the Island is its most famous fortification, Carisbrooke Castle. It was used to imprison King Charles I during the Civil War, but has a history that goes back to at least the 11th Century when it was built as part of the Norman Conquest. The castle sits on a citadel that once would have dominated the skyline around Newport. Carisbrooke is managed by English Heritage and is open to the public for most of the year, although its worth checking its website for visiting times during the winter months. The castle at Yarmouth is also maintained by English Heritage and like Carisbooke has a rich history that has been carefully preserved. It’s possible to step back in time and see how these remarkable buildings were intended to function. It was originally built by King Henry VIII WIGHTLINK.CO.UK

Sandown Fort is now home to Isle of Wight Zoo

CASTLES & SEA FORTS

15

Both Yarmouth and Sandown fortifications still welcome visitors and while Yarmouth Castle has been preserved intact, Sandown was rebuilt many times with the last version now providing a beachfront home to the lions and tigers of the Isle of Wight Zoo. Move forward 300 years and it was the French again that catalysed the next generation of fortresses to be constructed around the Island. Work began during the 1860s on these structures that are affectionately known as ‘Palmerston’s Follies’. They are dotted around the coast and can easily be seen from a Wightlink ferry as it crosses the Solent from Portsmouth and Lymington. Keep an eye out on your journey for the giant granite sea forts that rise straight from the sea, there are four in total. They were built over 150 years ago and stood abandoned for many years, but three are now in private ownership and offer luxury accommodation in the most unusual locations. The fourth is situated off St Helen’s and is close enough to the shore to be reached on foot once or twice a year on a spring tide. Visitors are welcome at the Needles Battery which is a Victorian gun emplacement built on the western-most point of the Isle of Wight. It is now part of the large area of land owned by the National Trust that includes Tennyson Down, Headon Warren and the Needles headland itself. You can take a tour around the remnants of the Old Battery as well as the New Battery, an extension built at the end of the 19th century to accommodate larger guns. Both were decommissioned after World War II. The site was then used as a secret testing facility for Black Arrow and Black Knight rockets. Walk around this stunning location to view these relics of the Cold War together with a viewpoint over the south coast’s most iconic rock formation. It makes a fascinating and enjoyable excursion for history lovers as well as anyone who enjoys stunning and dramatic coastal scenery. If you thought the Isle of Wight was only about sand castles in the summertime, now you know that the Island has played an important part in the defence of the country over many hundreds of years. There’s a world of castles, batteries and forts to explore and enjoy all year round.

FOOD GLORIOUS FOOD

Food Glorious Food It is the holiday season and the perfect opportunity to sample the best of local food. You have the ready-made excuse of it being the festive time of year, the time when belts widen a notch and novelty jumpers hide a multitude of sins. So make the most of it before the New Year guilt kicks in (along with the annual gym membership) and dive in, tastebuds first, to the Isle of Wight’s food scene.

A true winter warmer … The Island is a foodie’s paradise with Pinterest and Instagram-worthy dishes wherever you turn. It might be cold outside but it’s still hot in the kitchen and pubs offer the perfect winter warmer, many going all out to showcase the best of our seasonal produce. Take a bracing walk by the coast or through the countryside, add in a stop at a traditional pub with a roaring fire, a leisurely meal and you have got a recipe for the perfect winter day. Pubs such as The New Inn at Shalfleet serve up the best of local produce, with a whole section dedicated to Island fare on its specials board and is located a short family walk away from the stunning Newton National Nature Reserve. Kids will love spotting the wildlife from egrets wading to red squirrels scurrying and be sure to take your crabbing line – Shalfleet Quay is a well-known spot to catch a few of the little creatures. Breathe in the sea air over at The Buddle Inn, located on the Island’s most southerly point. Couple this with a walk along the Undercliff to St Catherine’s Lighthouse and finish off with a hot toddy next to the fire - bliss.

A selection of local cheeses, courtesy of Taste of the Wight

Farm shops galore … The Isle of Wight is known for its beautiful countryside and as well as looking lovely the fertile soils grow some of the best fruit and veg that you will taste. Winter is the time for comfort food – think hearty stews, piping hot casseroles and Sunday (or make that any day) roasts. When it comes to vegetables; carrots, leeks, various cabbages and of course, Brussels sprouts are at their best at this time of year. The Island’s farm shops are chockablock and the perfect place to visit to stock up for your self-catering break. Many of our farm shops are run either right on or just next to where the produce is farmed. The staff are knowledgable and can easily tell you how to cook things, what combinations taste good together or even suggest a recipe for you to try. Many have in-house butchers and offer a huge range of winter meats. Local birds such as goose and pheasant sit next to free-range Isle of Wight chickens and turkeys. Succulent sausages come in many flavours, with some of the farm shops, like Briddlesford Lodge Farm and Farmer Jacks, even winning awards for theirs.

Our bountiful seas …

Cosy up next to the log burner for a hearty meal at The New Inn, Shalfleet

WIGHTLINK.CO.UK

As we are surrounded by the sea (you really can’t miss it), the Isle of Wight does have a soft spot for seafood. Often thought of as a summer dish, the months during autumn and winter are actually a bountiful time when the local fishermen’s catch can include cod, bass, whiting, flounder and dab. Ventnor Haven Fishery is the place to go – phone ahead and ask them to fillet it for you to take home and cook, or even just go to try their legendary crab on chips, sit on the sea wall and watch the waves crash.

Staycation or vacation in five-star luxury this winter It’s not Christmas without a warming seasonal tipple, why not try The Royal Hotel’s mulled cider?

The perfect tipple …

Sumptuous, cosy, self-catering lodges, next to the glorious shores of the Solent, Woodside Bay Lodge Retreat is the perfect, tranquil location to escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

It wouldn’t really be the festive season without the mention of booze. As the saying goes, eat, drink and be merry. The Isle of Wight is home to three breweries, two vineyards, two orchards (one apple and one cherry/apricot) and one distillery. Perfect for the winter season, a Rosemary Vineyard mulled wine or a local Sharon Orchard mulled cider go down a treat. A hot toddy is the drink of choice for many, especially on Boxing Day. This may be due to the locals’ penchant for jumping into the freezing cold sea in the name of charity. An annual event in Ventnor and Gurnard, it is worth a visit, even if just to sit smugly all wrapped up nursing your Irish coffee. Both vineyards, Rosemary Vineyard and Adgestone Vineyard offer a wide range of wines including the allimportant fizz - perfect for parties. Take a tour around and try before you buy. The Isle of Wight Distillery offers some of the finest craft spirits. Well-known for their Wight Mermaids Gin which makes a fine G&T, they are currently in the process of distilling their own single malt whiskey.

CHRISTMAS ON THE ISLE OF WIGHT

Christmas on the Isle of Wight Our beautiful Island is an idyllic place to be at any time of the year, but during the festive season, it becomes truly magical. Where better to experience the time of year when celebrations are in the air than on the traditional, quaint Isle of Wight? Whether it’s a ‘tinsel and turkey’ weekend, an extended family holiday or a trip away with friends, the Isle of Wight will welcome all this winter season. You’ll experience streets lit with Christmas fairy lights and decorations, pubs offering local festive ales and restaurants all over the Island providing Christmas dinners.

Here comes Santa Claus … If you’re bringing the children over, a visit to see Father Christmas is a must. Luckily, he makes a number of stops across the Isle of Wight, taking in some of the best attractions. For a unique experience, visit the Isle of Wight Steam Railway. Here the kids can watch him and his presents arrive by traditional steam train, take a stroll through the magical Winter Wonderland and of course meet the man himself, coming away with a quality present and loads of memories. The Needles Landmark Attraction will be opening their grotto for Father Christmas too, meaning the children can not only pay him a visit but also enjoy a wealth of other rides, entertainment and games. Why not fill a glass ornament with the famous coloured sands of Alum Bay while you’re there for that extra special gift, or just a treat for yourself?

Deck the halls with boughs of holly … When it comes to Christmas experiences, it’s hard to top the Victorian Christmas event offered at Queen Victoria’s former home, Osborne, situated on the north coast of

the Island. The palatial house and grounds are dressed with traditional Victorian ornaments, decorations and an impressive tree that stands proud in the hallway. Take a guided tour around the house, stroll through the grounds, watch the kids ride on the carousel, smell the roasted chestnuts in the snow covered courtyard, meet Father Christmas and even Queen Victoria herself.

O’ Christmas tree, o’ Christmas tree … If you’re looking for something a little quirky this Christmas, be sure to visit the Brighstone Christmas Tree Festival in the West Wight. Celebrating its 20th year, the famous Festival sees thousands of visitors flock to view over 160 festive-themed and decorated Christmas trees, exhibited in various locations in Brighstone village and the surrounding area. Pay a visit and see if you can decide on your favourite.

NORTH

NORTH

NORTH The north of the Island is home to perhaps the most well-known town on the Isle of Wight. The mecca for all things nautical, Cowes is known around the world for its international sailing events. But sailing is only one side of Cowes. There’s pubs playing live music to the crowds, warming up the cold winter months as well as plenty of independent shops and galleries to explore. Try Shorelines of Cowes for gift inspiration, you are sure to find something for most in here (including yourself). Northwood House in Cowes regularly hosts events throughout the year and there is a popular food show to celebrate the festive season. A winter walk from Cowes town to the neighbouring village of Gurnard is made all the more enjoyable with a pit stop at The New Holmwood Hotel along the way. Book in for their Sunday carvery and enjoy a fabulous view across the Solent watching the boats bobbing on the sea as some brave sailors tackle the winter waves. Gurnard is a pretty little village with a couple of pubs and it’s worth visiting slightly later in the day for the sunsets - it might be winter but there are still glorious sunsets. The north of the Isle of Wight is split almost straight down the middle by the largest river on the Island, the River Medina. It flows all the way to Newport, separating Cowes and East Cowes. Not to be confused, East Cowes is quite different from its namesake. Home to Osborne, former residence of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, it is clear to see why royalty made

Fishbourne Beach

this their home. Built between 1845 and 1851 in a quintessential Italian Palazzo style, complete with sweeping terraces, towers and stunning formal gardens, you can get a real sense of how the royal family would have enjoyed time spent here, especially as the house dons its festive decor with trees, holly and the smell of roasted chestnuts wafting through the corridors. The parish of Fishbourne might be mistaken for nothing more than an area to get on and off the Island at Wightlink’s vehicle ferry port, but to overlook it is to miss a trick. With a pretty beach tucked past a small green, it is the ideal place to start a walk either to neighbouring Quarr or venture further afield to arrive in Ryde. NORTH EAST

Looking out to the RNLI Lifeboat Station, Bembridge

The north east of the Island has it all, from the Island’s largest town of Ryde with its hustle and bustle, to the miles of sands, both golden and pebbly, that stretch round to Bembridge - just as welcoming in the winter months as they are in the summer. A trip on a steam train at the Isle of Wight Steam Railway gives you feelings of nostalgia, as you head through the changing seasons from Havenstreet to Ashey. Autumnal colours pepper the forest as you pass through in a cloud of steam. Warm yourself up on one of their special carvery nights or mince pie specials, perfect for kids (and adults) of all ages. Once you have your ticket to Ryde, you might not want to leave. Take a stroll up the (steep) main drag, Union Street, with its boutique bars and shops such as Land of Roses. A veritable feast for the nose - all the rose oil used is extracted from the Damask Rose which takes more than 3 tonnes of rose petals to extract just 1 kg of Rose oil.

Round the corner, before you hit the most easterly tip of the Island you will pass through the pretty village of St Helens, known for it’s large village green. Ganders restaurant sits on the edge of this green and serves up excellent quality, locally-sourced produce perfect for a special occasion meal. Continue east to reach the town of Bembridge which claims to be the largest village in England with some 4,000 residents. Bembridge is home to two of the Island’s most recognisable pieces of architecture from the windmill built in the 1700s to the more recently completed Bembridge Lifeboat Station. For seafood lovers, The Best Dressed Crab’s floating restaurant and shop is definitely worth a visit. Whitecliff Bay Holiday Park has one of the most enviable locations with a beach right below its (white) cliffs - it’s the perfect spot to watch the surfers brave the winter waves. During your time in the north east of the Island, be sure to make a pit stop at Oasis. This treasure trove of unique and interesting products. Whether it’s items for the home, presents to take back for loved ones, or just a special something for yourself, you are sure to find it here.

Once you reach the top of Union Street, make sure to turn around for a photo opportunity and great view of Ryde Pier. Built in 1813 it is the oldest pier in England, one of the longest and is the home of Wightlink’s passenger catamaran service to Portsmouth. Further along Ryde esplanade, towards Puckpool you’ll find the Dell Cafe, overlooking the stretch of beach and benefitting from stunning views out towards Portsmouth. The panoramic views provide a stunning backdrop to your meal or hot mug of cocoa. Heading out of Ryde towards Ashey you could be forgiven for thinking this is a boozer’s paradise with a vineyard, cider orchard and a distillery all right next to each other. Sharon Orchard specialises in the growing of apples for traditional ciders and juices as well as serving warming lunches in their cafe. Neighbouring Rosemary Vineyard is home to award-winning English wines and with its 30 acres, is one of the largest vineyards in the country. If wine or cider is not your thing then you must be a gin drinker and if so, your luck is in. The Island’s first and only distillery opened in 2015 and has gone from strength to strength ever since. Wight Mermaids Gin is stocked on the shelves of many Island pubs and bars and you can guarantee it will be on the menu at The Seaview Hotel too. A supporter of local food and drink, The Seaview Hotel is the only place on the Island to currently hold a Bib Gourmand award from Michelin recognising the high quality and value for money offered all year round. Stay here awhile and take in the quiet sailing village of Seaview. Buzzing with holidaymakers and second homers in the summer months, the winter is decidedly more of a laid back affair - think dog walks on the beach and kite surfers in the sea.

SOUTH

The terrace at The Royal Hotel, Ventnor

As the birds migrate south for the winter, so do many who visit the Island. The southern point of the Island has its own distinct feel, partly due to the unique micro-climate and partly to do with the artistic heritage that is still in full swing today. Visit Ventnor, a real mini-Mediterranean town, that still bustles with pavement cafes even in the winter, as people sit and take in the views of the English Channel with a steaming cup of coffee or maybe a Hot Toddy. Zig-zag roads with Victorian terraces lead down to one-off shops, from antique emporiums to jewellers, and plenty of independent eateries using local produce, the town has a distinct artisan vibe. Being close to the sea, seafood is of course a local speciality in the south of the Island. Watch the fisherman come in on their boats and then pick up the best of the day’s catch from Ventnor Haven Fishery or enjoy a classic fish pie as you watch the waves crash against the rocks at The Spyglass Inn. Take a stroll along the Esplanade to get your fill of sea air where you’ll find a perfect place to enjoy your winter break. Ventnor Seafront apartments enjoy an enviable spot right opposite the beach and provide comfortable, quality self-catering accommodation for friends and family. Beautifully decorated and with dedicated parking, they are a perfect base for your holiday. Eat, stay and relax in luxury at The Royal Hotel. Built in 1832, The Royal is one of the oldest hotels on the Island and shares the rare privilege of being one of only 30 establishments to be listed in every Michelin Guide since it was first published in 1911. The grounds are a tapestry of colours with beautiful burnt oranges and deep purples in the winter months, all thanks to the head gardener from Ventnor Botanical Garden down the road. One of the oldest settlements on the Island, Bonchurch is a quintessential English village with stone cottages, a duck pond and an 11th century Church. You will feel like you have been transported back in time. A stay at The Leconfield has spectacular panoramic sea views and is perfect for your peaceful break. A trip down south would not be complete without a visit to The Isle of Wight Donkey Sanctury, home to over 90 donkeys where you can experience grooming and walking the animals before settling into the coffee shop for a well earned break. Rugged beaches, steep cliffs and beautiful walks, the south coast has it all and it’s no wonder it has inspired a few famous names over the years, including Charles Dickens who wrote several chapters of David Copperfield here. PORTSMOUTH

POR T S M O U T H The Portsmouth skyline with the Emirates Spinnaker Tower

If you’re one of the thousands of people who make their way through Portsmouth to catch a ferry to or from the Isle of Wight, next time you do, take some time to explore and uncover all that the city has to offer. The second largest city in Hampshire, Portsmouth is steeped in maritime history and is a centre for culture, entertainment and experimental cuisine. Famed for its nautical prominence, visitors can trace the origins of the Royal Navy and its heritage at the Historic Dockyard and Museum of the Royal Navy. With interactive exhibits to explore, tours to join and opportunities to learn more about the history of the naval city, this is a fantastic real life experience for people of all ages.

Take an hour or so to explore HMS Warrior and HMS Victory which have been turned into museums and can be toured at the Historic Dockyard. You will be treading the boards of two of the most famous ships ever built. The Dockyard is also home to The Mary Rose, the only 16th century warship on display anywhere in the world. The purpose-built museum reunites her with many of her artefacts and crew, capturing the moment in time when she sank over 470 years ago. If retail therapy is more your idea of whiling away the hours, don’t miss Gunwharf Quays for a superb shopping opportunity. Filled with premium outlet stores and some of the best brands in clothing as well as bars, restaurants, a cinema and bowling alley, you could easily spend a day enjoying the attractions available, as well as carry away a bargain or two. Towering above Gunwharf Quays is Portsmouth’s highest lookout, the Emirates Spinnaker Tower. At just over 170 metres high, it rewards visitors with fantastic views across Portsmouth, the Solent and the Isle of Wight. It’s a dramatic building and a must-see for any visitor - the Café in the Clouds is a great place to sit back, relax and enjoy the view. If you’d rather be under the sea than in the air, try the Blue Reef Aquarium where you can stroll next to sharks and rays and watch the inhabitants of a coral reef in the underwater tunnel. Southsea also has miles of waterfront beaches and cafés to enjoy. Visiting Portsmouth couldn’t be easier with excellent connections from London via the A3 and both coaches and trains running regular direct services too.

With activities ranging from cycling, walking and geocaching to horse riding, zip lining or just a spot of retail therapy, there’s plenty for the whole family to enjoy. Not so well-known are the 40 miles of coastline that includes salt-marshes, secret inlets and clear views up and down the Solent. With a history of fortresses, ship building and other industries such as sea salt production, Lymington is now a major ferry route to the Isle of Wight.
