8 DREAMING OF A WIGHT CHRISTMAS

Dreaming of a Wight Christmas

Magic descends on the Island during the festive season. Think crisp, cold days in the countryside or by the coast, pubs with roaring fires and the smell of fir trees in the air. We can’t promise snow (although we are trying) but we can guarantee that you’ll embrace the holiday spirit thanks to our attractions, eateries and shops that ‘step into Christmas’ with abandon. Christmas jumpers at the ready… Christmas is not Christmas without a visit to see Santa. Young or old, keeping the magic alive and watching your little one’s eyes light up when they spot the man in red, is a sight to imprint on your memory forever. For a proper ‘old-fashioned, Enid Blyton style’ adventure, head to the Isle of Wight Steam Railway for one of its Santa Specials throughout December. The station at Havenstreet will be bustling with live festive music, a Christmas market, woodland winter wonderland and

wightlink.co.uk

of course, Santa’s grotto. Then relax with a cosy 10-mile round trip through the Island’s winter countryside, aboard a majestic steam train. For a ‘Wight’ Christmas, visit The Needles Landmark Attraction and its Christmas Grotto, returning for an unforgettable month of magical entertainment. Here, you will find the real Santa Claus in residence each weekend during December. For an authentic experience, try Isle of Wight Donkey Sanctuary, where ‘Santa in a Stable’ will be taking place each Sunday in December. Father Christmas will be giving away gifts, aided by his donkey helpers (almost as good as a real-life reindeer). Meet Father Christmas at the IW Steam Railway’s Santa Specials

DREAMING OF A WIGHT CHRISTMAS 9

You can keep the family entertained with many of the festive events taking place across the Island over the wintertime. I Love Wight Christmas Market, a free event, returns to The Garlic Farm from 24–26 November. There will be an array of arts, crafts and local produce to purchase, and of course The Garlic Farm Shop will be open, alongside the restaurant and cafe. Enchanted Osborne, taking place from 15–23 December allows the unique opportunity of exploring the grounds after dark. Walk around a winter fairytale of light, colour and sound. Strings of lanterns laced through the boughs of trees and fairy lights twinkling behind leaves will lead you along an enchanting garden trail into a magical wonderland. Enjoy a traditional fairground where you will find a carousel and swing boats transporting you back to times gone by. There will be plenty to enjoy besides – from mince pies and mulled wine, to Christmas shopping at its heritage-inspired stalls.

all the family, however fussy. Oasis in Brading is a veritable treasure trove with products sourced from all over the world, but in particular Bali. From tiny tealights to large pieces of furniture, you cannot fail to find something to suit all tastes and budgets - plus you can wander around its range of colour coded Christmas decorations and give your own tree a new lease of life. Arreton Barns, the Island’s largest centre for arts and crafts, is the perfect ‘shop-stop’ thanks to its generous, free car park and abundance of unique items. Home to more than ten individual craft units, where you can watch the skilled artisans at work and maybe even order a bespoke item. wightlink.co.uk

For that special someone, a visit to Isle of Wight Pearl is a must. From classic styles to contemporary designs, you can even pick your own and have the in-house designers turn it into a treasured piece to take away. The Old Smithy in the picturesque village of Godshill, is great for fashion and cookware items, with brands including Seasalt and Joseph Joseph amongst others. Visual Impact’s three stores sit prettily next to each other in Watchbell Lane, Newport, offering a range of designer clothing, homeware and gift items, from brands such as Ugg, Ted Baker and Barbour. For antiques and homeware, make sure you pay a visit to Bayliss & Booth in Newport, it’s a little bit of provencal France right here on the Island. Painted furniture ranges are made to order, or pick up beautiful lighting, chandeliers, bed linen, tableware, gifts and home accessories. For pure, unadulterated Christmas, you cannot fail to be wowed at Christmas World, Busy Bee in Ryde. With a whole floor dedicated to everything festive, including thousands of lights, trees and animated models of reindeer, penguins and of course, Father Christmas himself. So make like Frosty the Snowman and ‘Have a Merry Little Christmas’ right here on the Isle of Wight this winter.

The Needles Landmark Attraction is situated in an area of outstanding natural beauty, with a stunning view of the Islands most famous landmark, the Needles Rocks and lighthouse. From Alum Bay beach (a short walk down 185 steps!) you can get a fantastic view of the amazing multi coloured sand cliffs that have drawn people to this site since Victorian times. With 21 distinct colours of naturally occurring sand Alum Bay is a unique geological site that has over the years attracted sand collectors world wide. This stunning landscape is so impressive in winter with fantastic walks all around the area including walks over Tennyson Down and nearby Headon Warren.

14 WINTER BEACHES

winter beaches Heading to the beach may not immediately spring to mind during the winter months, but when there is a chill in the air, there are actually many ways to enjoy our coastlines. When the bad weather hits, try a new way of exploring and enjoying the beach... Apart from the obvious fact that the Island’s beaches will be far less busy, there are many different ways to spend an enjoyable hour or two on the sand this winter, compared to the summer, when the tendency is to sit there and bake, or run into the sea only to run out again as it’s still too cold! During the winter months, your four-legged friends can scamper to their heart’s content on all of our beautiful beaches (between October and April). The Island’s watersports (mainly surfing and kitesurfing) are bigger and better than ever, with larger waves and less people in the way. You can discover a range of fossils and dinosaur footprints on our storm ravaged shores, as well as spotting rare migrating seabirds . So don your woolly hat and scarf and make the most of our coastline this wintertime.

FOUR-LEGGED FUN... Taking a holiday in the winter means that there is no need to leave the pooch behind thanks to the fact that the restrictions are lifted during this time, so the whole family can enjoy a good walk on a beach. The kids and animals can run wild and you can treat yourself to a well earned rest in a cosy local pub (surely all walks end with a pub stop?). Try The Boathouse in the pretty village of Seaview, where a roaring fire and a hearty meal will await you. Springvale is a shingle and sandy beach with uninterrupted views across to Portsmouth’s skyline and a great view of the Spinnaker Tower. The Buddle Inn over in Niton offers one of the Island’s best-loved walks from St Catherine’s Lighthouse to Castlehaven beach, tucked away down an unmade woodland track and leading directly to the sea. Man’s best friend will be as looked after as you, thanks to its very own menu offering an array of doggie treats and food.

wightlink.co.uk

SURF’S UP... Winter equals serious surf. Sitting in the Northern Hemisphere, the UK experiences extreme seasonal variation, from summertime flat spells, to hefty winter swells to try and make up for it. This results in consistent waves that are not jam-packed with crowds. It’s a great time of year to learn to surf too, as there are less people about, the classes are less booked up. It’s not even as cold as you might think, with the nippiest month generally being February - just make sure to invest in a decent winter wetsuit to see you through. Get your fix of waves at Compton Bay, or if kitesurfing is more your thing, Brook Beach tends to be the go-to choice. For lessons, try iSurf Mobile Surf School or Wightwater Adventure Watersports in Lake.

BEACHCOMBING... From sandy beaches to pebbly coves, our coastline provides a multitude of beaches to spend a day beachcombing and the winter is the best time, thanks to the stormy seas washing up more treasures. Keep the children amused as you tell the story of everything you find. Collect pretty shells, coloured sea glass and driftwood to use for crafts later at home. Shanklin Beach towards Luccombe is great for finding larger pieces

of driftwood, or Gurnard Beach provides hours of fun looking for gleaming sea glass in between the pebbles. For unearthing some fossils, the Island’s south-west coast is the place to go. Spot the Iguanadon footprints on Brook Beach and Chilton Chine. The bays here are constantly slipping so each day you might find something new and undiscovered. The exposed rocks are of the Wealden Groups, part of the early Cretaceous period, formed over 140 million years ago, making the Island one of the most productive places for finding dinosaur bones. Visit Dinosaur Isle in Sandown, where you will find exciting displays including real fossils, skeletal reconstructions, life sized fleshed re-constructions and two animatronic dinosaurs. Get hands on with a guided walk on Yaverland Beach to find fossils and dinosaur footprints from one of its local experts (booking is essential).

BIRD WATCHING... Many birds fly to warmer climates during the winter months and the Isle of Wight is well placed on these migration routes, which enhances bird watching around the coast. There are a number of reserves such as Newtown Creek and Brading Marshes where it’s possible to spot interesting ducks, waders and seabirds like Pintails, Golden Plovers and Purple Sandpipers. Try a coastal walk from Wheelers Bay in Bonchurch around Ventnor towards St Catherine’s Point and you may spot residents like Ravens and Peregrines, as well as those wightlink.co.uk

From top clockwise: Ryde Pier Head at sunset, Ventnor Bay and Forelands Beach, Bembridge

just passing through like Gannets and Guillemots. Similarly a walk along the north east coastline from Ryde around to Bembridge will allow you to observe any number of birds enjoying the foreshore and estuaries with more common gulls and waders sharing the beach with Oyster Catchers, Eider Ducks and Greylag Geese. For another coastal experience, try taking your binoculars on a cliff top walk from the heather topped Headon Warren near Totland Bay around the chalk cliffs of The Needles and Tennyson Down to Freshwater Bay. This provides a great contrast in habitats and a good variety of birding opportunities from Rock Pipits and Mistle Thrushes to Kittiwakes and the impressive Great Black Backed Gull. Over the past few years there have been many rare visitors recorded during the winter and early spring period, including Snow Buntings, Short Eared Owls and Dartford Warblers. So make the most of the winter fun to be had in the colder months, as soon, spring and summer will be in sight. Even if you’re not lucky and don’t spot something special, then at least you would have enjoyed a walk with some spectacular views.

18 RAINY DAYS

Rainy Days

– A SURVIVAL GUIDE Boasting 70 miles of coastline, the Isle of Wight can hold its own against ragged waves, blustery winds and elemental onslaughts. In fact, these rainy days offer the perfect excuse to explore a vibrant hub of arts, foodie delights and the Island’s rich, historical past... ...so, if you find yourself in a mid-winter thunderstorm or are simply determined to remain jolly despite a wet, windy weekend, the weather need not put the dampeners on your plans.

FOR THE ENERGETIC… It may be gloomy outside, but nothing dulls the zest of children under ten! For those who have young people in their herd, Tapnell Farm Park is a brilliant place to keep kids entertained. In this working farm, you’ll find a host of energetic indoor activities from climbing walls to archery, hay bales to scramble on or tunnel through, zip wires, soft play area and toddler imaginative play zones. Tapnell Farm Park is also one of the best places on the Island to connect with animals, offering daily hands-on feeding times. Leading a gaggle of slightly older children? Then make your way to Isle Jump in Lake. This trampoline extravaganza will keep even the most energetic person flipping, diving and performing aerial tricks. “There’s a netted dodge ball area,” an out of breath, 12 year old Owen tells me. “And the air pillow which you jump into is awesome. The best bit of all is the trampoline basketball. The bounce makes dunking the ball even more awesome!”

FOR THE FOODIES… If food and creativity are up your street, check out Arty Shakes in Shanklin. Combining creativity and deliciousness, favourite sweets or chocolate bars can be added to milkshakes, creating wacky Willy-Wonka like concoctions. Alongside this you can paint your own pottery, jewellery boxes, tea pots or money tins. For adults who find the daytime family activities a little overwhelming, relaxed evening sessions are also available. Another place to take refuge from the rain and lap up the best of Isle of Wight food, drinks and arts, is Holliers Park in Arreton. What was once an agricultural polytunnel is

Once you’ve browsed the shop you can step into the studio of Island artist, Geoff Lewis and watch him working, or if you are feeling creatively inspired, get some of your own art supplies from Taj Crafts. Finally, settle down for a well-earned cuppa, slice of cake or light lunch in the brilliant Victory Tea Rooms – a retro, refurbished bright yellow double decker bus that will add a vibrant splash of colour to the greyest of days.

FOR THE BRAVE… Before leaving and venturing back out to face the wind and rain, warm your cockles at the Island’s favourite hot spot, House of Chilli. Whether you are a hardened chilli-lover or prefer something just mildly eye-watering, you can sample an extensive range of chilli-based sauces, seasonings, dressings and chutneys. The knowledgeable staff are very helpful and can answer most heat-related questions. Should you know any chilli-lovers at home, this is a great place to pick up molten-gifts and souvenirs.

Holliers Park, home to various artisans and crafts, House of Chilli and the Victory Tearooms

Once you’re feeling the fire, you may need an emergency cool down – in which case head out to the coast and embrace the elements! Track down Tackt-Isle adventures based in St Helens, if you’re a seasoned pro, or you’re new to outdoor adventures and fancy giving something a go, Tackt-Isle have all the kit, skills and experience to help you make the Island your playground. For those not getting in the water, bring your wet weather gear as the beaches offer fabulous walking and photography opportunities.

FOR THE TIME TRAVELLERS… A visit to the Island would not be complete without delving into its ancient, prehistoric past. Winter may not invite leisurely fossil hunting tours, but anyone with an interest in history will love Dinosaur Isle in Sandown. Here you will encounter the Island’s fossilised past, discover skeletal reconstructions and fabulous animatronic dinosaurs. wightlink.co.uk

FOR THE ESC APISTS…

For a different historical destination, travel north to Brading Roman Villa. This award-winning museum offers a unique insight into Roman life in Britain, from beautifully preserved mosaic floors to an extensive collection of Roman archaeology. Once you’ve returned from your exploration into the Island’s Roman past, settle yourself in The Forum Café. Here you’ll be treated to the same panoramic views of rolling countryside and sea that our Roman inhabitants would have enjoyed hundreds of years ago. Also fascinated by military history? Don’t miss your chance to visit Newport’s Wight Military and Heritage Museum. Avid historians can learn about life in the war years and talk to ex-service volunteers who run the guided tours as well as discovering an impressive array of tanks, wightlink.co.uk

Feeling weather-weary? Then shake out your brollie, hang up your mac and settle down for a show at Shanklin Theatre. Opened in 1879, this historic building has a wonderful story to tell. Surviving a serious fire in 1925, only to become a dance hall in WWII and housing many famous names of the era, Shanklin Theatre now hosts a vibrant variety of shows and acts throughout the year. Whether it is pantomime, local amateur dramatics or visiting tribute bands, what better way to escape the cold weather than to settle down and be transported into a world of colour and performance. Finally, if complete escapism – and a little gift-buying – is required, take a relaxed sojourn to the exotic world of Oasis in Brading. Entering this shop is like diving into a warm aquarium of visual treats. Explore tranquil chambers of Balinese wood sculpture, Javanese boat-wood furniture, candles and handicrafts from the East. Soften your senses with textiles, Aztec bedding ranges, luxurious cushions and scented gifts. Whilst distant lands are a strong theme at Oasis, ranges always embrace any season, so if shopping is on the cards a visit here would be a very productive way to while away some hours on a cold, wet weekend.

24 LIVING ON AN ISLAND

Living on an Island

Sophie Honeybourne and her husband Raff

‘So near yet feels so far’ is often the way that the Island is described. Being able to step foot on our shores in just under two hours from London (just over two hours and you could be in the pub!), it’s little wonder that the Isle of Wight holds a unique appeal and many people choose to make it their home... Whether it is people moving over to start a family, retiring, holidaying year after year, or simply being lucky enough to have been born here and deciding to remain and forge a successful career. Each have their own reasons for living here and have made it their very own Island.

‘I was born and bred on the Island’ Sophie Honeybourne

Born and bred on the Island, Sophie is the owner, artist and jeweller behind Honeybourne Jewellery in Ventnor. Sophie started her business one month after graduating from London’s Royal College of Art with a Masters Degree in 2003, where she sold out of her final collection. Inspired by a love of nature, Honeybourne Jewellery has become a destination for visitors to the Island.

Where did you go when you left the Island?

I did my foundation at Kingston Uni and my 3D Design degree at Portsmouth Uni, commuting daily on the train from Shanklin through to Ryde, which I enjoyed as it gave wightlink.co.uk

me time to actually sit down and sketch ideas, something that I seldom got to do. I then went on the RCA, before graduating in 2003 and returning to my hometown of Ventnor.

Why did you decide to set up your business on the Island? I need to be by the sea, I swim in it nearly every day, even throughout the winter (I have a good wetsuit). Thankfully, with the success of my graduation collection, I was able to continue to build a name for myself whilst working here on the Island. Initially, I started out in my parents shed in Ventnor, but as business snowballed, we quickly outgrew that and in 2007 we opened our very own shop in Ventnor. It was the best thing we ever did.

What is your favourite way to spend a winter’s day on the Isle of Wight? I love a winter walk with my family. We would wrap up warm and go to Binnel Bay, where we would light a fire and have a cook-up whilst the kids run free. It was what we used to do as kids, so it is lovely to be able to do that now with my son.

Your favourite place on the Island...

I love The Royal for the ultimate treat and am excited to try a new eatery recently opened on Ventnor Seafront, The Smoking Lobster. But for my all time favourite place on the Island, it has to be Binnel Bay, I love its remoteness, it feels wild, quite unlike anywhere else.

26 LIVING ON AN ISLAND

‘We retired to the Island’ Ann Frampton & Mike Hughson

Ann and Mike recently retired to the Island and the village of Whitwell. They didn’t have to travel too far, having moved from Lymington where they successfully ran Action for Charity, seeing them taking part in some unique and exciting fundraising events all over the world, before settling here on the Island. They now run ‘Red Squirrel Cottage’, a three bed luxury holiday cottage near their home, available to rent all year round.

First visit to the Isle of Wight...

Alice Cadfan-Lewis with her son and two dogs

‘I commute off the Island for work’ Alice Cadfan-Lewis

Alice lives in Seaview with her husband Bryn, son Ralph and beloved beagles. Alice is the director and founder of Block Recruit, a specialist recruitment agency that provide property professionals to all areas of the property management industry. She and her team commute weekly to London and other major UK cities, for business.

First visit to the Island...

I first visited the Island on a school activity trip, where we stayed at a hostel for a week and went sailing. Then later in life, when I was living and working in London, my friends and I fancied a trip away, but one of us didn’t have a passport. So we needed a ‘staycation’, but still wanted somewhere that felt far away. The Island was the perfect place.

Why did you decide to move here?

As a keen cyclist, I used to visit the Island regularly for training, spending days here at a time. I fell in love with it and when I met Mike through work (who had never been before), we had our first date here, taking an open air bus tour around the Island with a bottle of champagne!

Why did you decide to retire to the Island?

We loved the scenery of the Island. We wanted to be within walking distance of a pub and stumbled across Whitwell and the house we eventually bought. We popped into the local pub, The White Horse, and the locals were so friendly, we thought ‘yes, we could live here’. We also saw the opportunity to develop a small cottage holiday home in our grounds, which is proving very popular, with bookings right into 2018.

What is your favourite way to spend a winter’s day on the Isle of Wight?

We enjoy keeping active and socialising, so when we moved here, we joined the Isle of Wight Hash House Harriers, which is a running (or in our case, walking) club which always finishes with a pub-lunch stop. It’s a great way of making friends and we are still discovering parts of the Island that we have not yet seen.

My working life in London had changed so that there was no longer a London office and we were working from home, which essentially meant I could be working from anywhere. I wanted to be by the sea, but places like Devon and Cornwall were just too far for me to easily commute. I knew the Island well by this stage as my sister had recently moved to Bembridge to be with her now husband, whom she had met during Cowes Week. I then found out I was having a baby and that was the decider. The Island provides such a safe and happy place to bring up a family, you can’t beat it.

What is your favourite way to spend a winter’s day on the Isle of Wight?

We love walking our dogs on the beach, usually Priory Bay as it is so deserted you can really think of it as your very own, or we enjoy crabbing just off the ledge in Bembridge. Winter is actually a great time for that. We would then go to The Dell Cafe in Ryde for a spot of lunch and warm up with a coffee. wightlink.co.uk

28 LIVING ON AN ISLAND

‘The Island is my second home’ Josie Gavoyannis

Josie was born on the Island, but moved to the mainland as a child. She now lives in Sussex with her husband and two children. The family own The Mill House in Brighstone, a holiday home that sleeps up to 12. They visit regularly in between bookings.

Why did you choose the Island for your holiday home?

‘I moved to the Island for my career’

In June 2005, I booked a two week holiday at The Mill House for my family, as I was keen to show them where I had been born and raised. We instantly fell in love with it and asked the owner if he ever considered selling, to let us know. The following December we received a call informing us that the house was to be put on the market. We jumped at the chance to buy it.

Ben lives in Cowes with wife Gail and their young family. He is the CEO of UKSA (UK Sailing Academy), a maritime training centre and charity, where he has worked for over 15 years since making the Island his base in 1996.

The Isle of Wight has something to offer everyone – fabulous walking and cycling routes, safe sandy beaches, historic buildings and monuments, an array of tourist attractions and activities, excellent pubs and restaurants... an ideal spot for a holiday home!

Ben Willows

Ben Willows

When was your first visit to the Island?

I first came to UKSA when I was 17, to do a sailing instructor course. It is the best place in the world to do that sort of training. It was a long way from home – I grew up in the Midlands, so to be surrounded by sea and endless choices of where to go sailing was pretty special! It offers great connections off the Island for work, whilst having a great quality of life, lots of outdoor activities and a cool vibe.

What was the draw of the Island?

The Isle of Wight is a Mecca for sailing, we have world class boat design, composite technology and of course UKSA which is the one of largest providers of RYA (Royal Yachting Association) and professional maritime training anywhere in the world, and also the best. It made a lot of sense to me, that my career started and has formed here.

How long have you been coming here – how often do you come over?

After moving to the mainland when I was a child, my family would come back to visit friends once or twice a year, but since we’ve owned The Mill House, we come over as often as bookings will allow.

Favourite place on the Island?

Every time we visit The Mill House we try to incorporate a walk up to the Tennyson Monument and then on to The Needles. I feel like I’m on top of the world with the glorious Isle of Wight spread out beneath me.

Lindsay Becker

Where do you live and where do you work?

I live in Cowes, and I work at UKSA where I have the privilege of being the CEO. UKSA is a busy maritime training centre delivering courses for careers at sea, teaching individuals and school groups watersports, but it is also an amazing charity, helping disadvantaged young people from all over the UK, by using the power of the sea to change their lives. We are celebrating our 30th anniversary this year, and we have also had our 150,000th student through the door. It’s a special time.

Your favourite place on the Island...

My kids and I call our favorite place the “Secret Beach” but I can’t tell you where that is. As it wouldn’t be so secret then. So, it has to be Gurnard on an epic ‘wind-against’ day. wightlink.co.uk

30 WIGHT TASTE

WIGHT TASTE This year, Wightlink have partnered with many local suppliers to bring you fresh, delicious and local produce from the very beginning of your holiday, to the very end. Thanks to the extra hours of sunshine and general love of the ‘good life’, the Isle of Wight produces more than you probably realise. Certainly more than enough to see you through your visit. If you are anything like us, when on holiday, food is right up there, at the top of the list. So we thought we would introduce you to some of the producers behind the products found in our Wight Taste shops: ISLAND ROASTED The family business was born from a lack of support for the speciality coffee industry, when husband and wife Dan and Viviana, started out in event catering nearly 20 years ago. They began roasting their own and today, many of the local coffee shops and cafés that you frequent on your visit to the Island will be serving up a blend of Dan’s speciality roasts. You could always pop into his own café ‘Caffe Isola’ or his new store opening soon in Newport, and chat to the man himself – over a cup of coffee of course!

Our pick – Mocha Blend

A great all rounder, smooth and full bodied, just as good in milk drinks or espresso/americano.

GODDARDS BREWERY The oldest brewery on the Isle of Wight and one of the first independent craft beer producers in the UK, Goddards has been brewing fine real ales in the beautiful surroundings of Barnsley Farm since 1993. Its barley is grown here on the Island and the mains water supply to the brewery comes via a fresh water spring just a few miles down the road.

Our pick – Fuggle-Dee-Dum

A chestnut, tawny red premium ale. Brewed with roasted malts and English Fuggle hops, to give a smoky, spicy hoppiness on the nose, leading to a molasses, nutty palate with a light fruity hop dryness.

wightlink.co.uk

THE ISLE OF WIGHT BISCUIT COMPANY Baked in the heart of the Island’s countryside at Rew Valley, biscuits are handmade in small batches using the finest ingredients, locally sourced wherever possible. Traditional farmhouse cookies come in beautiful drums, or kids will love the red squirrel shapes that taste even better than they look.

Our pick – Original Butter Crunch

This biscuit excels as a mouth-watering combination of butter and golden syrup. Dip in your tea and jobs a goodun!

WIGHT TASTE 31

C ALBOURNE CLASSICS You can’t go wrong with cake, it goes hand in hand with a cup of tea and always makes everything better, the girls at Calbourne Classics know this for sure! Sisters Louise and Jenny based at Three Gates Farm, a traditional 400 acre dairy farm where 200 cows live, with over 70 being used to produce milk for the extensive range of award-winning ice creams, cakes, yogurts, clotted cream and much more.

Our pick – Lemon Drizzle Cake

A light zesty cake, the perfect blend between sweet and sharp.

THE GARLIC FARM Set in the picturesque village of Newchurch, you can smell The Garlic Farm before you can see it and that is no bad thing. Home to everything garlic, the family behind the pungent bulb have been growing garlic in our fertile soils for over 40 years. A true family business, headed up by father Colin Boswell, daughter Natasha – who has written several books on cooking with garlic – son Hugo and daughter Jo who head up the ‘Field Kitchen’. A trip here is a treat for the tastebuds.

Our pick – Pear and Date Chutney

Rich, deep fruit flavours with a spiced garlic base. From cheese to curries, the perfect accompaniment for your winter cheese board.

PINK’S An artisan brand with an ethos steeped in history and tradition, based in beautiful Merstone. Revived by owner Fiona Pink, after her great grandfather Thomas sold the company in 1920, it now wins numerous Great Taste Awards year after year. The range includes jellies, chutneys, pestos, peanut butters and most recently, jams, all produced in small batches and all vegetarian.

Our pick – Chocolate Peanut Butter

Delicious and indulgent, stick to the roof of your mouth, hand milled peanut butter. Spread thickly on warm toast. wightlink.co.uk

32 WIGHT TASTE

YATES BREWERY A true family business, with father and son at the helm, Yates are constantly experimenting with flavours to find the next new classic. The latest brew is the aptly named ‘Islander’ and has fast become the brewery’s bestseller, it can barely be brewed fast enough to keep up with the Island pub’s demands.

Our pick – Islander

The most recent addition – a nice light refreshing drink with fruity after tones and a subtle bitter finish.

WIGHT CRYSTAL WATER All water you see carrying the Wight Crystal logo has been drawn locally on the Island at Knighton Spring. Not only is it good for you, but by drinking this water you are actually supporting an Island charity, as all profits help to fund care services, employment and life-enhancing opportunities for people with a range of disabilities. As well as still or sparkling water, Wight Crystal also produce traditional lemonade and ginger beer.

Our pick – Ginger Beer

Warm it up with some cinnamon and spices for the perfect mulled winter tipple.

See The Needles in a different light this winter

Join us for a Wight Christmas at The Needles, with the Island’s most famous Christmas Grotto returning for another unforgettable month of magical entertainment. With the real Santa Claus in residence on the weekends of the 2nd & 3rd, 9th & 10th, 16th & 17th plus Saturday 23rd December, we’re spreading the Christmas cheer to families across the Island. For more information please see our website.

Our fully licensed tea rooms are named after the great man himself, as well as our newly refurbished Marconi’s Restaurant. Take time out from your adventures to enjoy a refreshing cup of tea or speciality coffee, a range of sinful cakes and pastries and an extensive selection of soft drinks, cold beers and alcoholic beverages. Don’t hibernate this winter, get out and explore the western tip of the Island. Feeling energetic? Love nothing better than getting out there in the fresh air? Then take on the Towering Tennyson walk around the wild western tip of the Isle of Wight. Taking in Alum Bay, The Needles, West High Down and the magnificent Tennyson Down, with views across Headon Warren to the Solent and the mainland beyond. Situated here at The Needles is the world famous Marconi Monument, which marks the precise location where Guglielmo Marconi undertook his pioneering work at the end of the 19th century, which led to radio and all telecommunications as we know it today.

Wightlife reaches Bali with

On the 6 March 2017 Alan and Bridget Southwell embarked on one of their twice yearly buying trips to Bali. The trip was to be different from the many so far as they had been invited to take a look around a local school and meet the children. The school, called Sekolah Taman Tirta, meaning Water Garden, is situated in the Badung Regency, with an attendance of 49 pupils. The teachers at the school had spent a considerable amount of time teaching the children to speak English through song, but wanted to give the children the opportunity to speak to an English couple and so knowing that Alan and Bridget were in the country again invited them along. Before leaving the Island, they needed to come up with some simple things that the children could see and understand regarding the Isle of Wight. So they asked Wightlink for some supplies of Wightlife magazines, along with these they purchased a number of storybooks that they could donate to the school library. Alan and Bridget were expecting a very lowkey visit, however upon arrival they were treated to a full show that had been practiced over several months for their benefit. This included dancing, singing and a “Barong “dance. It was a spectacular show in which the whole school participated. Afterwards they were invited to the classrooms to talk about England and to take questions from the pupils on all different subjects. They passed out Wightlife magazines and watched the children’s eyes light up, they were so excited about the Isle of Wight.

The boys enjoyed the map and talking about Carisbrooke Castle whilst the girls’ favourite was hearing about Osborne House. Although the children in the third grade were only 10 years of age they could identify with the life of living on an Island. These children spoke English very well with a great understanding and the Wightlife magazine has left a welcome impression on them.

Also within Gunwharf Quays is the soaring Emirates Spinnaker Tower – which offers 350-degree views across 23 miles. From the tower’s three viewing platforms you can see across Portsmouth, over to the Isle of Wight and out to The Solent horizon. Here you can see otters, rays and even sharks, or simply while away a sunny afternoon in the family-friendly splash pool. Don’t just think of Portsmouth as stop off on the way to or from the Isle of Wight. This vibrant and historic city has loads of things to see and do, so why not take an extra couple of days before or after your trip to explore what’s on offer. Plan your trip at visitportsmouth.co.uk to see exactly what’s on and build a bespoke itinerary for your trip.

64 LYMINGTON & THE NEW FOREST

through the trees on a zipline at Go Ape near Ringwood, or paddleboard and kayak along the Forest’s gentle rivers. Foodies should check out the Food Trails; five speciallydevised walks to get you out and about tasting the very best fare of the Forest. Treat yourselves to afternoon tea – there are some national award-winning hotels just waiting to serve you.

LYMINGTON & THE NEW FOREST Frosty autumn bracken in the New Forest

The New Forest and the Isle of Wight have been gazing across the Solent at each other for a thousand years. But if you’ve ever wondered just what lies beyond the Forest’s green and wild coastline, or what the town of Lymington is really like, away from its bustling ferryport, make this the year you find out. Autumn is the New Forest’s season; the 5,000 or so roaming ponies and their donkey friends are joined for 60 days by pigs at Pannage; running wild in the forest, eating up the fallen acorns as they have for centuries. The trees – some of them dating back to Tudor times – put on a colour display to rival New England and the region’s award-winning chefs are foraging for food from the Forest’s natural larder. By adding a little time to your day or weekend trip over the next few months you can take in every good thing the New Forest has to offer; whether it’s the wild walks – there are 193,000 acres of common land to roam over, more than 100 miles of safe off-road cycling routes – perfect for even very young children – or something more adventurous. Whizz

Those fascinated by the past will find the Forest is layered with history. From the alleged site of the murder of King William Rufus to the forbidding Tudor fortress at Hurst Spit, to the remains of the D-Day Mulberry Harbours at Lepe beach, there’s always something to discover. Prefer your history indoors? Breamore House and Country Museum near Fordingbridge, the National Motor Museum and Palace House at Beaulieu or the Sammy Miller Motorcycle Museum at New Milton will have more than enough to intrigue and delight you. Another museum (and gallery) must-see is the newlyrefurbished St Barbe. Occupying a former school house just off Lymington’s main street. It’s a wonderful introduction to this historic port town, whose history spans its time as Georgian England’s greatest producer of sea salt (in what is now the 500-acre nature reserve at nearby Keyhaven), to its reputation as Britain’s yachting capital.

Stay awhile in Lymington and explore the famous market

Spot the gold post box, painted in honour of Olympic sailing Gold medallist and Lymington’s most famous adopted son, Sir Ben Ainslie, located on the High Street. If you’re visiting on a Saturday, be prepared to negotiate the popular street market. They’ve been holding markets in Lymington since the 13th century and today’s cosmopolitan version includes everything from well-priced plants to locally-sourced meat, stylish painted furniture and delicious street food. Stay awhile and you’ll discover even more – restored seawater bathing at the lido at the end of the cobbled Quay Street, which takes you past chic little lifestyle stores and places to eat. When you’ve finished, don’t worry about getting back or embarking on the next stage of your journey – your return ferry will be gliding into port, just across the harbour.

Autumn walking in the New Forest is a must do if you’re in the area
