Both Yarmouth and Sandown fortifications still welcome visitors and while Yarmouth Castle has been preserved intact, Sandown was rebuilt many times with the last version now providing a beachfront home to the lions and tigers of the Isle of Wight Zoo. Move forward 300 years and it was the French again that catalysed the next generation of fortresses to be constructed around the Island. Work began during the 1860s on these structures that are affectionately known as ‘Palmerston’s Follies’. They are dotted around the coast and can easily be seen from a Wightlink ferry as it crosses the Solent from Portsmouth and Lymington. Keep an eye out on your journey for the giant granite sea forts that rise straight from the sea, there are four in total. They were built over 150 years ago and stood abandoned for many years, but three are now in private ownership and offer luxury accommodation in the most unusual locations. The fourth is situated off St Helen’s and is close enough to the shore to be reached on foot once or twice a year on a spring tide. Visitors are welcome at the Needles Battery which is a Victorian gun emplacement built on the western-most point of the Isle of Wight. It is now part of the large area of land owned by the National Trust that includes Tennyson Down, Headon Warren and the Needles headland itself. You can take a tour around the remnants of the Old Battery as well as the New Battery, an extension built at the end of the 19th century to accommodate larger guns. Both were decommissioned after World War II. The site was then used as a secret testing facility for Black Arrow and Black Knight rockets. Walk around this stunning location to view these relics of the Cold War together with a viewpoint over the south coast’s most iconic rock formation. It makes a fascinating and enjoyable excursion for history lovers as well as anyone who enjoys stunning and dramatic coastal scenery. If you thought the Isle of Wight was only about sand castles in the summertime, now you know that the Island has played an important part in the defence of the country over many hundreds of years. Food Glorious Food The colder months provide the perfect excuse to indulge as you know full well you will walk it off (on your way to the pub) and you can continue to hide under your woolly jumper until at least March. The Isle of Wight’s food scene is top notch so dive in, tastebuds first. It really would be rude not to.

A true winter warmer … The Island is a foodie’s paradise with Instagram and Pinterest-worthy dishes wherever you turn. It might be cold outside but it’s still hot in the kitchen and pubs offer the perfect winter warmer, many going all out to showcase the best of our seasonal produce. Take a bracing walk by the coast or through the countryside, add in a stop at a traditional pub with a roaring fire, a leisurely meal and you have got a recipe for the perfect winter day. Pubs such as The New Inn at Shalfleet serve up the best of local produce, with a whole section dedicated to Island fare on their specials board. Located near the stunning Newtown National Nature Reserve, this is a walk for all the family. Kids will love spotting the wildlife from egrets soaring to red squirrels scurrying and be sure to take your crabbing lines — it’s a well-known spot to catch a few of the little creatures. Breathe in the sea air over at The Buddle Inn, located on the Island’s most southerly point. Couple this with a cliff top walk to St Catherine’s Lighthouse and finish off with a hot toddy next to the fire — bliss.

Farm shops galore … The Isle of Wight is known for its beautiful countryside and as well as looking lovely, the fertile soils grow some of the best fruit and veg that you will taste. Winter is the time for comfort food. As the temperature drops outside, we need something to keep us warm. Think hearty stews, piping hot casseroles and Sunday (or make that any day) roasts, all followed with winter-warmer puddings — crumbles, bread and butter pudding — the list goes on. When it comes to vegetables, carrots, leeks, various cabbages and of course, Brussels sprouts are at their best at this time of year. The Island’s farm shops are chockablock and the perfect place to visit to stock up for your self-catering break. Many of our farm shops are run either right on or just next to where the produce is farmed. The staff are knowledgable and can easily tell you how to cook things, what combinations taste good together or even suggest a recipe for you to try. Many have in-house butchers and offer a huge range of winter meats. Local birds such as goose and pheasant sit next to free-range Isle of Wight chickens and ducks. Succulent sausages come in many flavours, with some of the farm shops, like Briddlesford Lodge Farm and Farmer Jacks, even winning awards for theirs.

An Island for all seasons As you explore the Isle of Wight this winter, with its miles of coastline and raging winter seas; or while taking a walk through a forest floor laden with fallen leaves, it can be hard to picture the incredible seasonal transformations that take place here over the next few months. Deserted beaches will make way for sandcastles and sunscreen and woods will bloom with wildflowers, as the Island comes into its own for the summer season. Summer on the Isle of Wight needs to be experienced to be understood. It is a place unlike any other, partly due to the unique climate and extra hours of sunshine that are happily bestowed upon us, but also partly due to the fact that it is only a mere two hours from London, but instantly feels worlds apart as you drive off the ferry. Whether arriving in Fishbourne, Ryde or Yarmouth, you are certain to get that instant holiday feeling, as you leave the stresses and strains behind. Summer to most means beaches and splashing in the sea and here on the Island you can take your pick. Compton Beach over in the West Wight is a surfer and body boarder’s paradise. Park up in the top carpark overlooking the sea, grab an ice cream from the van and head down the wooden steps. The waves here in the summer are perfect for the kids to jump and play in and as the tide goes out you can try and spot the wreck of the SS Carbon that ran aground in 1947. If you are looking for more quintessential seaside entertainment, then a trip over to Sandown and Shanklin will be a must. The beauty of the Island is that we are quite literally surrounded by beaches, so if you turn up to one and it doesn’t quite take your fancy, you can hop off to the next until you find the one that is right for you. The Island is buzzing during the summer months. As well as hosting two of the UK’s largest festivals, Isle of Wight Festival and Bestival, there is rarely a weekend that goes by between June and September when there isn’t something happening. From the Old Gaffers Festival in Yarmouth, The Garlic Festival and the legendary Cowes Week, no one can accuse the Isle of Wight of being sleepy. Carnivals also go hand in hand with the summer months. Ryde Carnival is the oldest carnival in the UK dating back to 1887 when it first took place in celebration of Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee. Ryde Carnival is still going strong today and the town transforms into a sea of colour as the floats and dancers go past. Most of the other towns around the Island celebrate with their own carnivals and many host illuminated processions creating beautiful light shows for the summer evenings.

Couple this with a trip down the chairlift to the famous coloured sands of Alum Bay and then take a pleasure boat ride to see The Needles up close and personal. At Ventnor Botanic Garden you will see the result of the Island’s unique microclimate in all its glory. Protected from the cold north winds by chalk downs and warmed by its southerly aspect, the garden grows subtropical plants not normally grown in the UK. Enjoy the kid’s playground and a bite of local produce in the restaurant.

NORTH The north of the Island is home to perhaps the most well-known town on the Isle of Wight. The mecca for all things nautical, Cowes is known around the world for its international sailing events. But sailing is only one side of Cowes. There are pubs playing live music to the crowds, warming up the cold winter months as well as plenty of independent shops and galleries to explore. Try Shorelines of Cowes for gift inspiration, you are sure to find something for most in here. A winter walk from Cowes town to the neighbouring village of Gurnard is made all the more enjoyable with a pit stop at The New Holmwood Hotel along the way. Book in for their Sunday carvery and enjoy a fabulous view across the Solent watching the boats bobbing on the sea as some brave sailors tackle the winter waves. Gurnard is a pretty little village with a couple of pubs and it’s worth visiting slightly later in the day for the sunsets - it might be winter but there are still glorious sunsets. The north of the Isle of Wight is split almost straight down the middle by the largest river on the Island, the River Medina. It flows all the way to Newport, separating Cowes and East Cowes. Victoria and Prince Albert, it is clear to see why royalty made this their home. Built between 1845 and 1851 in a quintessential Italian Palazzo style, complete with sweeping terraces, towers and stunning formal gardens, you can get a real sense of how the royal family would have enjoyed time spent here. The parish of Fishbourne might be mistaken for nothing more than an area to get on and off the Island at Wightlink’s vehicle ferry port, but to overlook it is to miss a trick. With a pretty beach tucked past a small green, it is the ideal place to start a walk either to neighbouring Quarr or venture further afield to arrive in Ryde. The north east of the Island has it all, from the Island’s largest town of Ryde with its hustle and bustle, to the miles of sands, both golden and pebbly, that stretch round to Bembridge - just as welcoming in the winter months as they are in the summer. A trip on a steam train at the Isle of Wight Steam Railway gives you feelings of nostalgia, as you head through the changing seasons from Havenstreet to Ashey. Relax in a traditional carriage and travel through the Island’s unspoilt countryside. Once you have your ticket to Ryde, you might not want to leave. Take a stroll up the (steep) main drag, Union Street, with its boutique bars and shops such as Land of Roses. A veritable feast for the nose - all the rose oil used is extracted from the Damask rose which takes more than 3 tonnes of rose petals to extract just 1 kg of rose oil.

Continue east to reach the town of Bembridge which claims to be the largest village in England with some 4,000 residents. Bembridge is home to two of the Island’s most recognisable pieces of architecture from the windmill built in the 1700s to the more recently completed Bembridge Lifeboat Station. For seafood lovers, The Best Dressed Crab’s floating restaurant and shop is definitely worth a visit. Whitecliff Bay Holiday Park has one of the most enviable locations with a beach right below its (white) cliffs - it’s the perfect spot to watch the surfers brave the winter waves. During your time in the north east of the Island, be sure to make a pit stop at Oasis. This treasure trove of unique and interesting products. Whether it’s items for the home, presents to take back for loved ones, or just a special something for yourself, you are sure to find it here.

Once you reach the top of Union Street, make sure to turn around for a photo opportunity and great view of Ryde Pier. Built in 1813 it is the oldest pier in England, one of the longest and is the home of Wightlink’s passenger catamaran service to Portsmouth. Further along Ryde esplanade, towards Puckpool you’ll find the Dell Cafe, overlooking the stretch of beach and benefitting from stunning views out towards Portsmouth. The panoramic views provide a stunning backdrop to your meal or hot mug of cocoa. Heading out of Ryde towards Ashey you could be forgiven for thinking this is a boozer’s paradise with a vineyard, cider orchard and a distillery all right next to each other. Sharon Orchard specialises in the growing of apples for traditional ciders and juices as well as serving warming lunches in their cafe. Neighbouring Rosemary Vineyard is home to award-winning English wines and with its 30 acres, is one of the largest vineyards in the country. If wine or cider is not your thing then you must be a gin drinker and if so, your luck is in. The Island’s first and only distillery opened in 2015 and has gone from strength to strength ever since. Wight Mermaids Gin is stocked on the shelves of many Island pubs and bars and you can guarantee it will be on the menu at The Seaview Hotel too. A supporter of local food and drink, The Seaview Hotel is the only place on the Island to currently hold a Bib Gourmand award from Michelin recognising the high quality and value for money offered all year round. Stay here awhile and take in the quiet sailing village of Seaview. Buzzing with holidaymakers and second homers in the summer months, the winter is decidedly more of a laid back affair - think dog walks on the beach and kite surfers in the sea.
