THONG NHAT PARK:
A PLACE FOR ALL
Thong Nhat Park history is flooded with stories of unification and community work. A park by the people and for the people, stated as a green area for the city of Hanoi, became the biggest park in the city with the second biggest lake after Ho Tay. Its history shows the power of the people to procure for themselves that which is good for the society as well as for the individual. It is the first time in the history of the nation that a park was built by the community’s own hands; people gathered from all parts of the city and the country to help in a task so significant that encouraged many generations to come. It showed how the people could unite in one common goal, and that, by far, is the greatest asset that any park could have.
Knowing this and a more, is what led our group to participate in the contest, taking in consideration that whatever the future for the park would be, one thing was for certain, that any project in the park had to be intimately involved with the people of the city.

I. GROUP APPROACHES
The starting point of the group is “starting from scratch�. Which means our group do not put any of our ideas, oppinion or concepts first. We set up a guide line to direct our design process base on below criteria
1. Not to force any point of view and concept of design from people who barely use the park into the proposal. The proposal will be based on the real demands of the communites that spend every day in the park. 2. Group proposals will be in two stages.
1.1
The first stage
* Based on the referenced oppinions from the communities in the park to consider and cross check between the benefits of other related comunites and/or in the influence range of the whole comunity and the park to give out the proposal.
* Establish the communities commitee to provide oppinions and comments to the group´s design in the later phase. Consideration in combination with the master plan and the direction of the goverment if it fits. If there is any better solution, then the proposal will be submitted to changes.
* Summary all the above along with the designers observations while we are invesigating the park to give our group proposal with phases to be develop in the park in the future.
1.2. The 2nd stage:
* After finishing the proposal, the group continue to ask for the comments of the community to complete our design and that will ensure us to have the best design meeting all the demands of the community.
* Adjustment of the proposal and submiting the final one. Ask for public oppinion the last time to complete the final proposal.
Two round of proposal and design reference between the design groups and the park’s community
With the debate based on the set criteria of the proposal ¨Thong Nhat park: a place for all¨, the group will go to find out the demand of the communities in the park, and put the purpose of meeting this demand of those users as our group criteria and purpose to design if they are not illegal and do not brake the Vietnam law and the affect the park’s environment.
After collecting the requirements from the communities, based on the group experience and professional knowledge of planning, architecture and certain economic issue, combine with the the direction (if it is correct) of the park master plan/park development plan of the People Committee of Hanoi. All the groups in the community will participate in the park´s activities and will state their requirements and demands to better serve their activities in the park. Based on these summary of demands, the group will judge the necesity level and the influence on the common activities of the park and others comunities and individuals to arrange and give out proposals.

2.1. History of Thong Nhat Park
In 1958, people’s committee decided to reopen the area from around Bay Mau lake (1 North Acre = 3.600m2, so 7 acres = 25.200m2 = 25.2 ha) to green tree park where people of the city came to relax and mobilize. All of the students, pupils, officers and citizens to contribute with their work to build the park. In 1960, the project was finished with clean water on the surface of the Bay Mau Lake.

3.1. Pilot researches of our group and summarizing community opinions Groups gives out the questionnaires with all questions established to know the user about the function items, services, user wishes of users of Thong Nhat park in the first launch. As the time is short, the number of questionnaires delivered on week day is 150 and weekend is 300. Number of questionnaires return is 100 for weekday and 250 in the weekend. Base on the summary of the those social researches, the direction of the renovation and maintenance are summarized.
In order to cross check and proved for group’s collected information and bases for our proposal, our groups filmed our interview representative individuals for communities and individuals opinions of which they participated. Base on that we made a film name: “ One day in Thong Nhat park” to record thinking, wishes and point of view of the Thong Nhat park users. One part of the daily life of those people they spent in the park. Therefore, their opinion and wishes, to make the park’s spatial more useful is concerned by us

Group’s proposal will be carry on in three stages
1st STAGE RENOVATION OF THONG NHAT PARK SOLVE THE CURRENT ISSUES OF THE PARK
1. The park’s activities are rearranged to be suitable and reasonable with communities and activities requirements such as football, pull ups and badminton. Others community’s activities are kept and create the best conditions for them.
2st STAGE RENOVATION OF THONG NHAT PARK MERGE WITH THE GOVERNMENT PLANNING
- The 2nd stage: Combine and rearrange with the government plan to enlarge the road, create outside and inside linkages of Thong Nhat park.

- The 3rd stage: Enlarge the park, create the chain linkage with others gardens and parks of which under the management of Thong Nhat Park limited company to create green area.
