Preston 'Pop Up' Mural Pays Tribute To Guild Wheel And Its Creator A piece of street art which pays homage to the Guild Wheel cycle route and its creator has appeared in Preston, and the Towns Fund

Board is looking for more buildings in Preston to be host to future murals. Adorning the rear wall of Snape's Printers in Boltons Court, which links Avenham Lane with Church Street, the mural painted by local artist Gavin Renshaw, features a cyclist riding through Avenham and Miller Parks with the East Lancashire railway bridge and historic Park Hotel in the background. Gavin was inspired to paint the mural as a tribute to former Preston councillor Peter Ward MBE. A passionate cyclist, the 21mile circular Guild Wheel was Peter's idea and he helped see the ambitious project through to completion in time for the Guild in 2012. The mural is entitled 0/21 as the location depicted marks the official start and finish line of the Guild Wheel. Peter passed away in 2017

and a memorial garden in his name was also unveiled on the route in June this year. Funded as part of Preston's £20.9m Town Deal, the street murals are the latest Preston Pop Up project aimed at increasing footfall in the city centre following the pandemic, as well as supporting local arts and culture. Three further murals are planned in the city and Paint Preston, which is managing the project, is looking for other building owners to come forward to offer up wall space to support the artists. Robert Binns, a member of Preston Partership and the Preston Towns Fund Board, said: "We've seen how street art in other cities around the world can create a strong sense of place and encourage visitors to spend more time exploring a city. That's what we're trying to achieve with this latest Pop Up project which will create another cultural focal point and support local artists." Councillor

Matthew Brown, Leader of Preston City Council said: "This brilliant new mural by local artist Gavin, perfectly depicts an iconic Preston scene. It allows us to pay tribute to former Councillor Peter Ward MBE who gave so much to Preston by helping to create the iconic Guild Wheel, while welcoming more culture to our city. I encourage anyone who owns a building in Preston to come forward for this fantastic opportunity to create more great murals which will enrich the cultural journey through our city, welcome

more visitors and celebrate local talent." Ben Rutherford, one of the project organisers for Paint Preston, said: "The other planned murals are all inspired in some way by Preston's heritage, culture, and environment. They will be appearing at other locations in the city and one thing we need now is prominent wall space for the murals, so we're urging any other building owners who would like to come forward and offer up an external wall to contact us." The pop ups also include the recently unveiled Wallace and Gromit sculpture and MET event space. The projects are being funded from a £1 million pot of initial funding Preston received from the government's national Towns Fund. Lanes Next To New Link Road Construction Now Closed For Safety Work on the M55 to Heyhouses Link Road has progressed to the point where the existing parallel lanes to the link road needs to be completely closed for safety reasons. Wild Lane has been closed to vehicles for a number of years, however it has continued to be used by pedestrians and cyclists. North Houses Lane has remained fully open as far as Division Lane, but it is now necessary to fully close both North Houses Lane and Wild Lane from (Friday 22 October). Work is taking place as part of the overall project to improve these sections, and once the new link road is completed, they will be reopened as a shared path for pedestrians, cyclists and

horse riders, providing a safe route away from the new road. Phil Whalley, principal highway engineer for Lancashire County Council, said: "We’ve kept the roads open for as long as possible as we're aware that cyclists find it a convenient route, and many people have found it a nice quiet place to park up and walk their dogs. "As much as we'd like to keep them open, we've reached the point in construction where we need to start works on new drainage structures on the line of and near these roads, and we need to close them for safety. "We're very grateful for people's understanding and are looking forward to the

existing roads becoming a really great feature when they reopen permanently as a shared path once the link road is finished." Construction has so far been progressing well on the M55 to Heyhouses Link Road, which is due to open in early 2024, with base foundations having been laid for more than 1.4km from the existing Whitehills roundabout to the north towards where it will eventually meet Heyhouses Lane near the Cypress Point development site. The M55 to Heyhouses Link Road will improve access between Lytham St Annes and the M55, relieve congestion on smaller local roads, and support the commercial viability of local housing and business development sites.

Work Starts To Revamp Royton Town Hall And Library For Community becoming carbon neutral by 2025 followed by the whole borough by 2030. The refurbished town hall is expected to be complete and fully open to the community later next year.

Work to transform Royton Town Hall and Library into a multi-use community hub has now begun. The project will breathe new life into the much-loved town hall and adjoining Royton Library to create a welcoming, family-friendly venue in the heart of the town. As well as creating an improved library area and better community rooms, there will also be space for a local business to launch. To allow works to progress, the access ramp will be closed from Monday 23 October for one week. We’ll also be carrying out some major work to the

roof from 8 November to 3 December, and unfortunately during this time the library will have to close. We’re sorry for any inconvenience. You can use any other local library, details of which are at www.oldham.gov.uk/ libraries. Cllr Arooj Shah, Council Leader and Cabinet Member for Economic and Social Reform, said: “This is a really exciting project for Royton. Residents are rightly very proud of their town hall, so we’re delighted to see work begin to improve it and the library for the community. “It’s something we’ve been committed to doing for a long

time but couldn’t start during the pandemic. It’s great news that work has now started and the building will soon get a new lease of life!” The historic building is being made accessible for all users and will become much more energy efficient supporting Oldham Council’s commitment to becoming the greenest borough in Greater Manchester. The 1960s rear extension will be demolished with the cleared area then landscaped to create a flagged area with seating. The existing library area is being sub-divided into two distinct areas. The first being a newly created

refurbished library area and next to this, a commercial space which we would like to rent to a local business or social enterprise such as a café or use complementary to the library. A reception desk will manage both the new library area and offices for council staff which will extend to the ground floor of Royton Town Hall. Upstairs in the town hall, the existing community room will be retained and revamped to offer an improved area for the community to use. The refurbishment will also include a platform lift, accessible toilet and kitchen area. The whole building will also benefit from the installation of additional sustainability and energy efficiency measures to reduce its carbon footprint, as part of our Green New Deal - an ambitious target of the council

Details have been confirmed about the eagerly awaited visit to Rochdale of Little Amal – a 9-year-old refugee girl in the form of a 3.5 metre puppet. The Walk is a public art projected produced for Good Chance in association with Handspring Puppet Company, world famous creators of the horse puppets in War Horse. Little Amal has travelled from the Syrian border across Turkey, Greece, Italy, France, Switzerland, Germany and Belgium in search of her mother, stopping at 65 places on the way, including

give her a warm Rochdale welcome. “We are so pleased Rochdale has been chosen to meet Amal on her journey. This epic walk has an important role to play in changing the conversation and bringing us all together.” Manchester International Festival (MIF) is working on the Greater Manchester finale of The Walk, an epic 8,000 kilometre journey. On Tuesday, 2 November

Deputy Leader of Bolton Council, Cllr Hilary Fairclough, said: “We can’t wait for IRONKIDS to return as part of Bolton’s iconic IRONMAN weekend, and we’re delighted the event has been expanded to meet

growing demand. “The event is always great fun, bringing people into the town centre and creating a real family atmosphere. “But it also serves a serious purpose by inspiring young people to get involved in sport, and we’re even starting to see former IRONKIDS taking part in the larger events. “Night Run is also making a welcome return, giving residents of all ages a chance to enjoy themselves and take part.” The race is open to children aged 3 to 15 years old with different distances depending on the school year of the child. A SCHEME to fund voluntary, community, and faith sector groups across Lancashire is set to be relaunched to help county councillors support vital work in their communities. The Local Member Grant Scheme will give councillors the chance to make small grants to groups and organisations who make a real difference in their local areas. Funding will go towards specific projects that benefit the community rather than general running costs of the groups, with each councillor allotted £2,000 each year to give away to organisations working in their own communities. The scheme will be discussed by members of the council's Cabinet at its next meeting on Thursday November 4,

and then by the full council at its meeting in December. They are expected to vote for the reintroduction of the scheme, which previously ran from 2006 to 2017, from January next year. Grants will be given to projects which meet the council's corporate priorities, particularly those of 'Caring for the Vulnerable' and 'Protecting our Environment'. Applications will be considered by each Group's local county councillor, who will decide which projects should be supported. County Councillor Phillippa Williamson, leader of Lancashire County Council, said: "We know what a difference grants like these can make to community projects and as a new administration we were really keen that they should

be reintroduced. "All 84 councillors will have a pot of £2,000 each to make grants to support some of the amazing work we already know is happening at a grassroots level. "We particularly want to help smaller groups and groups looking for relatively small sums of money, with a minimum grant level set at £100. "Although larger charities and organisations are very welcome to apply, this scheme is also open to groups with less capacity and resource, and who sometimes might find applying for grants daunting or difficult. "The difference that such groups can make in their communities with relatively small amounts of money is well understood and something the council wanted to support."

Three recently planted cherry trees have been vandalised in Walker's Field, in the Moorside area of Bury. It follows an incident at Peel Brow in Ramsbottom, when four out of five trees were snapped in half just one day after they were planted. Councillor Alan Quinn, cabinet member for the environment, said: “Yet again, mindless neanderthals have vandalised our precious newly planted trees. We need to plant 10,000 more trees just to keep pace with the those we are losing due to Ash Die Back. Our trees clean the air, provide habitat to diverse species and take up the rain that can lead to floods.” Anyone with information about the vandalism can report it to the council: www.bury.gov.uk or 0161 253 5353.

Councillor Eamonn O’Brien, leader of Bury Council, said: “Bury is very much open for business, and Chamberhall is the perfect location – right next to the town centre and close to all amenities and transport links. “We’re looking to continue our success story

and team up with the right developer who will bring investment and opportunities to our thriving borough.” The procurement process is being conducted through the council’s electronic tendering system known as The Chest. Three residents have been successfully prosecuted by Oldham Council after their waste was found dumped in the borough Environmental Health officers traced waste dumped on Adam Street to Corrina McDermott, of Letham Street, Oldham. In court the 34-year-old pleaded guilty to a Duty of Care offence - when dumped waste is found and is traced back to a person or address – and was given a 12-month conditional discharge and a £21 victim surcharge. Robert Kotlar, 46 of Crete Street, Oldham pleaded not guilty to four similar offences after his waste was found on Schofield Street on four separate occasions. However, magistrates found the 46-year-old guilty of the offences and he was fined £400 with £300 costs. The third resident, who gain pleaded guilty to a similar offence was, Stefan Rapa, 40 of Copsterhill Road, Oldham. His waste was found deposited in an alleyway off

Copsterhill Road. The 40-year-old was fined £700 with £531 costs and a £72 victim surcharge. Councillor Amanda Chadderton, Deputy leader of Oldham Council and Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods, said: “Cleaning up our borough is a priority for the council and prosecutions like this show how serious we are about taking action against those who don’t seem to give a toss. “Residents tell us they want to live in clean neighbourhoods and that’s why we’ve invested an extra £1.27m into our Don’t Trash

Oldham campaign. “We are currently recruiting more enforcement officers who’ll be working across the town. If they see littering, fly-tipping or dumped waste they’ll investigate and if evidence is found we’ll take action – as these cases show. “Cleaning up rubbish like this costs every council tax payer – money that could be better spent elsewhere. “Everyone needs to do their bit – it’s not hard. Dispose of your waste properly and if you pay someone to get rid of it for your check they have a waste carriers licence or you could end up in trouble.”

Remembrance Sunday Remembrance Sunday, which falls on 14 November in 2021, is a national opportunity to remember the service and sacrifice of all those that have defended our freedoms and protected our way of life. We remember the Armed Forces, and their families, from Britain and the Commonwealth, the vital role played by the emergency services and those that have lost their lives as a result of conflict or terrorism. West Lancashire to remember the fallen • Armistice Day will be 11 November • Remembrance Sunday will follow on 14 November • Mayor and Council representatives will join public for commemorations Every year on Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day, our communities pay tribute to those who have lost their lives serving our country. Armistice Day tributes will take place on 11 November followed by Remembrance Sunday commemorations across the Borough on November 14. In 2020, COVID-19 restrictions forced the cancellation of

the traditional parades and services and residents were instead asked to pay their respects by observing a two minute silence wherever they were, creating a remembrance space in their gardens and donating to the Royal British Legion's Poppy Appeal. This year will see a welcome return to the traditional parades and gatherings where everyone is invited to join together to mark these important occasions. Mayor of West Lancashire, Councillor Gordon Johnson said: "We are delighted to be able to return to the traditional way in which we honour those who have fallen while in service. "2021 is the centenary year of the Royal British Legion, making this year's commemorations even more poignant. West Lancashire will always remember the sacrifices made to protect our citizens and our freedoms." Details of the commemorations across the Borough are as follows: REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY SERVICES, 14 NOVEMBER AUGHTON 12.15pm

All The Things That Might Be In Short Supply For Christmas 2021

It's beginning to look a lot like... well, sort of Some may be reluctant to admit it, but Christmas is around the corner. In just over 10 weeks, we’ll be sitting around our respective dining tables eating, pulling crackers, and then eating again. After the washout of Christmas 2020, where Covid restrictions made it impossible to enjoy a "normal Christmas", many hoped that 2021 would bring a return to the Yuletide cheer of yesteryear. Except, there might be a different kind of spanner in the works this year. Supermarket bosses have warned that there may be a shortage of some of our favourite Christmas goodies as we approach December, the result of a lack of drivers to deliver those goodies around the country. Be it because of Brexit, Covid rates leading to isolation periods and a lack of staff, or a combination of both, there is a risk that some of your favourite festive items will be missing from

your home this Christmas. “We’ve already had one Christmas cancelled at the last minute. I’d hate this one to be problematic as well,” said Richard Walker, the chief executive of supermarket chain Iceland in recent weeks. Tesco chairman John Allan, meanwhile, said: “Normally the supermarket industry would start building stocks from now in readiness for Christmas. Longer-life products first, things like Christmas puddings and so on, shorter-life products, like fresh turkeys, very late in the day. “At the moment we’re running very hard just to keep on top of the existing demand and there isn’t the capacity to build stocks that we’d like to see.” So what could we be short of come December 25? Turkeys There are concerns that poultry farmers will only be able to produce 80% of their usual output this year, due to a shortage of workers. Richard Griffiths, chief

executive at British Poultry Council, said: “It would be irresponsible to grow more birds than can be slaughtered and processed, which is incredibly frustrating when the demand is there for quality British products.” Pigs in blankets Ah, a lot of people’s favourite Christmas lunch treat, crispy bacon wrapped around a small crispy sausage. We can’t have Christmas without them, surely? A spokeswoman for British Meat Processors Association said it’s a possibility. “Given the current workforce shortages, meat companies are finding it difficult to see how they’ll dig themselves out of this,” she said. “Part of the issue is that it’s more difficult to time the supply of pigs in the same way that you can for Christmas turkeys, so production of Christmas favourites like pigs in blankets has to be done well in advance, and normally should have started at the beginning of July. “The problem will continue

Sales E: sales@wilcopmedia.co.uk | T: 0115 6972677

to spiral until something changes. That ‘something’ must be an injection of new workers.” Petrol We all need petrol to do those all important Christmas rounds, delivering presents to loved ones and making sure you get to wherever is hosting this year’s festivities. But after weeks of chaos at the pumps, there are no guarantees that everything will be back to normal by Christmas. Despite many petrol stations

now having ample stocks of fuel, many in parts of England continue to be low on quantity. Policing Minister Kit Malthouse told the BBC last week: “We are still seeing strong demand in parts of the country around fuel, albeit that there is no problem of supply into the country. “The distribution mechanism is trying to respond to this unprecedented demand.” Gifts Now hang on a minute, no turkey or pigs in blankets is

one thing, but no presents? Retailers, like other industries, are being hit hard by a lack of drivers, and that could mean a delay in delivering toys and other gifts, or enough of them, to stores in time for Christmas. Experts in the toy industry fear that consumers will face higher prices this Christmas as a result of economic pressures that have disrupted their plans. Bins We all generate even more waste over Christmas, thanks to more packaging, more food waste, more wrapping paper, but rubbish collection is something else which could be affected due to driver shortages. Veg Surely there’ll be enough veg to go around? Labour shortages in the fruit and vegetable market could have a real impact this Christmas, according to experts. Jack Ward, chief executive of the British Growers Association, said: “If you cannot get the labour, you end up going through the crops and you might just pick out the class one and leave some of the other produce

Page 19.

that could have been picked from those fields. “I think the longer term issue is it just continuously erodes the confidence of growers.” Christmas trees What the hell are we supposed to hang our baubles on if we run out of Christmas trees? One farmer explained this week why even the most important festive item of all might be harder to come by this year. "With Brexit, the paperwork involved with importing the produce to grow has

increased significantly,” said Rob Morgan. “There’s also a huge lack of drivers and general transportation, as most us will be aware by now, as well as lengthy shipping delays, which is really driving up demand for local producers and farmers. “Many wholesalers are too afraid to buy from abroad these days, because of the delays and the

paperwork and so on. It’s great for local farmers like me to have that extra support, but there simply aren’t enough trees at the moment to meet this sudden increase. A Christmas tree takes around 12 years to grow, so we can’t just produce more overnight.”

It’s Beginning To Look At Lot Like Christmas In Blackpool

Christmas might look a little different this year, but Blackpool is glowing with festive magic. For the first time in history, the Blackpool Illuminations are lighting up the promenade in the run-up to Christmas and this year’s town centre festive lights are looking as

decorative as ever. It’s the most wonderful time of year! Town Centre Christmas Display Are you coming to town this Christmas? Blackpool is sprinkling some seasonal spirit across the town as hundreds of icicles light up the streets. The wintry blue

lights are displayed across Bank Hey Street, Victoria Street, Church Street, Clifton Street and Abingdon Street. The new festive display, designed by the Blackpool Illuminations team, was launched to coincide with the reopening of non-essential retail on 2 December in

a joint scheme funded by Blackpool Council and the Town Centre BID. Stop by to see the gigantic 40ft Christmas tree standing tall in St John’s Square, beaming with twinkling white and blue lights. There is also a second tree installed in the heart of

Bickerstaffe Square, so if you’re doing your Christmas food shop in Sainsbury’s or heading to Blackpool North Station, make sure you take a look. Remember, you can park for just £1 for any three-hour period in the majority of Council-owned car parks* until 3 January 2021. F Houndshill Shopping Centre Now that non-essential shops have reopened, why not head to Houndshill Shopping Centre for a bit of Christmas shopping? Not only will you be supporting the high street, but you are guaranteed to feel the festive spirit as you shop amidst the twinkling lights and decorative shop windows. Don’t forget, it’s Late Night Thursdays on the 10 and 17 December where you can park for free in Houndshill Car Park from 5-8pm. The mall is also running a

socially-distanced Santa’s Grotto for the little ones. Blackpool Illuminations The Blackpool Illumina-tions need little introduction but one major thing you do need to know is that they’ll be shining until 3 January 2021 for the first time in history. We’ve officially decked out the whole of Blackpool! Are you super excited for Christmas Day or do you need a little nudge to get you in the mood? The greatest free light show on Earth will keep your spirits bright and bring some well-needed Christmas cheer to all residents. Our top tip for seeing the Illuminations is from the comfort of your own car; however, if you need to stretch your legs, please keep to the social distancing guidelines in place. Whichever you choose, why not take some warm mince pies to eat on the way or tuck into some delicious fish ‘n chips?

Christmas 2021: Experts Predict The Bestselling Toys For This Festive Season From the toys that every child will want to the best time to start shopping, here's what you need to know. Christmas is a magical time for all the family. Whatever your age, it's a time to catch up with loved ones, reflect on the year and - of course - give presents! If you have a little one in your life and aren't too

sure what to get them this year, we've spoken to top industry experts to find the toys every child will want.

We've also gathered advice on the best time to buy to avoid disappoint-ment. Here's everything you need to know... Christmas 2021 trends to expect What toys will be popular for Christmas 2021?

"Some of the top toy trends we’re seeing for 2021 are those tied into films, with the lack of new releases last year meaning we saw very little along these lines in 2020," says Peter Jenkinson, AKA "The 'Toyologist," a UK-leading toy expert who regularly features on popular television programmes. "This year, we’ll have a new Ghostbuster film, Paw Patrol hitting the big screen and a Top Gun movie, too." The consensus is also that big-brand toys will remain popular. "There are lots of brands we’re excited about for Christmas 2021," says Gary Grant, Founder and Executive Chairman of toy shop The Entertainer. "This includes Paw Patrol, following the movie this summer. Other popular brands will include CoComelon (based on the popular children's TV show), Super Mario, L.O.L. Surprise! (mini baby dolls), Barbie and Bluey We can also expect people of all ages to fall in love with (another popular kids TV series)." toys and games for Christmas 2021. "This year we’ve seen

"For example, sales of construction toys and puzzles such as Lego have risen 50% in the last 12 months, and we predict this trend will

continue for Christmas 2021." What toys will children ask Santa for this Christmas 2021? Having insight into what your kids might want is great for surprise gifting, but what can we expect them to ask Santa for? John Lewis may well have the best predictions for this. The retailer enlisted a panel of five under 12's to help select and approve the top 10 toys for Christmas. The Toy Testers spent hours playing, testing and competing in the John Lewis Toy Testing Lab and then selected their favourites. Drinks: Make Mine A Crabbie Alcoholic beverages, from beers, lagers, ciders, through wines and liqueurs, to spirits and more, have been consumed and enjoyed for many, many centuries. The whisky industry is doing very well, indeed. With the UK and export markets increasing, whisky, most definitely, can be said to have ‘stood the test of time’. As societies become more affluent, then the requirement for whisky grows, being something of a status symbol, clearly giving signs of a higher lifestyle. For example, it is reported that in China, people are enjoying Scotch whisky in western-style bars and it has become a growing trend. My quest, on this occasion, was to locate whiskies which I find interesting and satisfying. John Crabbie & Co have been purveyors of wine and spirits since 1801. John Crabbie and his family owned a lot of property in Leith, north of Edinburgh and exported around the globe. Providing fine, single malt

Scotch whiskies was John Crabbie’s objective in life. Several whiskies are within the Crabbie range. Yardhead Single Malt is so named because of the original site in Leith. The Crabbie 12 year old Speyside Single Malt whisky is hugely popular and produced utilising bourbon casks, to great advantage. The bouquet is most enticing and the smooth, wellbalanced mouthfeel continues the delight, with an excellent body that has superb depth and a richness that follows for the palate’s pleasure, having fruity and vanilla overtones. Other Crabbie whiskies include 8 year old and 12 year old productions, plus 15 year old Highland Single Malt. 40 year old Speyside Single Malt (44.5% vol) and 50

year old Islay Single Malt (46.5% vol) are destined for the ‘top table’, most certainly, I suspect. Stockists of Crabbie whiskies include supermarkets, independent wines/drinks retailers, bars, restaurants and they can be purchased online, too. It is always exciting and very satisfying to find whiskies that are fresh and have interest, with a good nose and flavour. The flavour and finish, on the palate, having great importance – then duly noted and remembered! John Crabbie & Co, Leith, Edinburgh EH6 5QN. Tel: 44 (0) 151 480 8800 www.crabbiewhisky.com

How To Get An Upgrade On Your Honeymoon! Getting married isn’t just about going on honeymoon, but it sure is an exciting plus to the whole shebang! But how do you go about milking the special occasion for all its worth? Everyone loves an upgrade and if you can’t get one when you’re going on your honeymoon then when can you? It’s the perfect opportunity to be pampered and spoiled, especially after all the stress of the wedding planning is over. Calling first class! There are so many moments where you might be able to wangle an upgrade when you go on honeymoon. The first is the flight. This is a lot easier to accomplish if you haven’t booked a package deal through a high street travel agency. If you’ve booked flights and accommodation separately then turning up at the airport in your finest clobber, rather than like a scruff bag (albeit a very comfy one), is a great way to find yourself boosted up to First or Business class. This is an important fact to consider as the area you want to be moved into is usually full of very well-heeled people. The next step is to arrive at the airport early. This gives you the best opportunity of nabbing any last-minute upgrades. Don’t forget to check again when you reach the gate in case an upgrade has become available since you checked-in. Another hot tip for making it more likely to receive an upgrade is to fly on a Saturday as this is when business travellers are usually at home, meaning you have less competition. Tell the world you’re here for your honeymoon. Once you’ve made it to your honeymoon destination the next step towards getting an upgrade is to tell everyone that you’re on your honeymoon! It’s important to do this at the right time though. Telling businesses that

you’re going on your honeymoon when you make the booking tends to hike the prices up. So, you’re better off waiting until you hit the runway to mention that you’re newly-weds on honeymoon. If you’re staying in a hotel then mention at check-in that you’re on your honeymoon and ask if there are any honeymoon suites available for you to upgrade to or if there is anything they can do for you to help make your honeymoon more memorable. Then as you go about making your precious memories whilst you are away, you need to keep speaking up. Tell everyone you meet that you’re there on your honeymoon. You never know, it might lead to a couple of

free glasses of champagne over dinner at any of the restaurants you might visit! The same can be said for any activities, excursions or day trips that you intend to do whilst you’re away. Live like an A-lister. Of course, before you even get to this stage you need to decide on where to go! If you’re at a loss for ideas, other than knowing that you want the A-list treatment,

then take a leaf out of @ RocknRollBride’s book. She says that ‘If you’re looking

to really go all out on your honeymoon, to have a once in a lifetime experience and

to truly live it up like a rock star, then the Maldives has to be top of your list.’

“Breast Screening Saves Lives – Don’t Miss Your Appointment”, Says Local Survivor And Champion

Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers in the UK. Around one in eight women in the UK are diagnosed with breast cancer during their lifetime, but if detected early, treatment has a higher rate of success. A breast cancer survivor is now helping to raise awareness about the lifethreatening illness. 76 year old, local resident Margaret Mills, of Padiham, Burnley

in East Lancashire was diagnosed with breast cancer 16 years ago when she attended her routine breast screening appointment Margaret said: “I retired at the beginning of 2005 and in the summer, I attended my routine mammogram screening appointment. On this occasion, I was invited back to have an ultrasound. My head was telling me, don’t worry,

it could be something or nothing, but having been a nurse, my gut was telling me it is something. Both the screening and ultrasound picked up that something wasn’t right. A week later I was invited back for another appointment and this time, the consultant discussed the results with me and talked about removing part of my breast. It was then I decided if they were going to take away a quarter of my breast, they might as well take the lot. “Following the operation, I had chemotherapy, which isn’t pleasant at all. After this I had radio therapy and then the herceptin. From the start of the mammogram till the end of the treatment, it was about 21 months. “Whilst I was going through my treatment, I went to the hospice once a week for 12 weeks. It was a full day with

all breast care patients, so we could all interact and talk to each other. We could also get help from the staff to help us cope psychologically and physically. I had10 sessions of hypnosis, which really helped me and towards the end, one of the breast care nurses showed me how to do self-hypnosis and gave me tips and advice on how to cope. The breast care nurses and consultants were fantastic. “I feel the worst treatment physically, was the chemotherapy. Psychologically, it’s still there, It never really goes away, you just learn to cope with it and you learn to swich off from it. Losing all your hair, its not just the hair on your head, it’s your eyebrows, your eyelashes, everything goes. Long term effects, I still get pain in my shoulder sometimes, I’ve got

dry skin, I’ve got dry eyes. Eyebrows and eyelashes haven’t come back that much but you can cover that with makeup anyway. “I feel very lucky and am grateful to everyone involved in my care and treatment. As a way of giving back, I work as a volunteer at the hospital and for the CCG’s cancer team and many other things. I also have worked as a volunteer, in the breast care clinic prior to the pandemic and will start this again when things settle down again. “All I can say is, if you find something which you’re not sure about, go and see your GP. Most of the time there’s nothing wrong, but its safer and if you’re offered a scan, please go and attend. The earlier you are diagnosed, the quicker you are treated and the better the outcome!” Dr Neil Smith, Primary Care Director and

Cancer Research UK GP for Lancashire and South Cumbria Cancer Alliance said: “Breast cancer can affect you at any age, so it’s important to be ‘Breast Aware’ and check your breasts for lumps or a change in size or shape at least once a month. If you notice anything unusual, please don’t wait – contact your GP. “In most cases it won’t be cancer, but it’s best to get checked over because early diagnosis saves lives.” Advice and support about cancer signs and symptoms: NHS information about breast screening Cancer Research UK information about breast cancer symptoms NHS information on breast screening for transgender people. The Common Cause Of Joint Pain One of the most notorious causes of joint pain is arthritis, the painful condition affects thousands of people in the UK and can occur at any time of life, although most common in the middle aged to elderly population. As an excruciatingly painful condition, arthritis can make it tough to continue with everyday activities and rob the individual of their range of movement. Physiotherapy can help. Many people think that exercising with osteoarthritis is difficult, even impossible, because of the pain. The truth is that an arthritic joint needs to get nutrition, and there is no better way to provide joints their nutrients than the movement itself. Exercise is actually beneficial for those with osteoarthritis, but there are some things to remember.

• Exercise will help you feel better, reduce pain, and improve your ability to do daily activities if done regularly. • A common symptom is pain after activity, which may make you reluctant to exercise. However, you can help relieve pain with heat or ice to stay active. • Ice is a great drug-free pain reliever. It helps decrease joint swelling and pain. If your joint hurts, apply ice for 15 minutes. If you don't have a cold pack, a bag of frozen vegetables (like peas) will do the trick. • Exercise should be balanced with rest and joint care. If your joints hurt or you notice redness or swelling, rest your joints, then try a little exercise. • Always check with your doctor before starting an

exercise program. Joints and muscles need to be exercised to prevent stiffness and weakness. Also, exercise will make you feel better and help you maintain a healthy weight. Excess body weight places extra force and pressure on arthritic joints, which helps osteoarthritis progress more rapidly. For more healthcare tips and advice, contact T4 Physio in Bolton for the first step to reduced pain and increased activity. T4 Physio is a renowned clinic located in Kearsley Bolton. 5 Reasons Why Everyone Should Make Friends With The Older Generation The Benefits of an Active Social Life We have all heard the saying that ‘laughter is the best medicine’, many of us know that this can be true in many cases. The main reason is because we usually share these funny moments with other people. No matter what our age, maintaining an active social life and making new friends is so important for our overall health. Spending time with people you love and respect affects our happiness and can relieve a massive amount of stress. When paired with other healthy habits such as eating well and staying fit, socialising frequently can help us all keep cognitively active and improve our memory. Nurturing strong social bonds isn’t just good for our mental health though, it also improves our physical health too. Research shows that reduced stress also reduces the likelihood of heart disease, strokes, and diabetes. Reasons to Nurture Strong Relationships with Elderly People Cross-generational friendships are enlightening for both sides. From simply making strong social bonds to giving us important life lessons, there are a whole host of reasons to make friends with people from different generations. Older people can teach us life lessons which will impact our resilience, confidence, and

empathy. Some more reasons to make friends with elderly people include: 1. The older generation can pass on their life lessons and experiences Older people have generally been through a lot. In other words, they have ‘been there and got the tshirt’. They have had children, gotten married, and they may have experienced living through a war. Their lives have been full of positive and negative experiences and not to mention, they have done some very interesting things that the younger generation simply couldn’t imagine. Learning about these experiences can teach younger generations a lot about resilience, hard work, and confidence. Listening to their stories will also help them reminisce about times gone by. 2. You and and your elderly companion can both learn a lot Both sides will get some interesting cultural lessons that they simply wouldn’t learn from peers in their own age group. Everything from music and art to literature and film, you’ll learn a lot about the kind of culture that shaped their perceptions and you can teach them more about modern culture too. 3. You and the elderly can share similar interests Maybe you like playing a musical instrument or you enjoy being creative and making art? People across

different ages can share the same interests and enjoy them together. Not only that, but you can also take it a step further and learn a new hobby or skill from the older generation or you can teach them something new. 4. You are able to gain a different perspective by listening to the older generation As we grow older our opinions and perceptions change a lot. In fact, they are changing all the time and this is a positive thing because it allows us to be open minded and receptive to different ways of doing things. We all have perceptions and stereotypes, so why not challenge them by speaking to people with different ways of thinking? 5. You might help an older person feel more connected to the world Everyone can experience loneliness, but it is particularly prominent in elderly people. Keeping in regular contact with elderly friends can help alleviate any feelings of isolation. The use of technology has contributed to this too, it is always on the rise and people who were around before the rise of technology can sometimes feel quite lost. This is an opportunity for the younger generation to teach the older people in their lives to navigate the digital world, or atleast help them when they need to use technology in their daily lives.

Easy Ways To Look Better Instantly Whiten Your Teeth or Let Lipstick Help You Do It Nothing makes you look prettier and more approachable than a bright, healthy smile. As Charla Krupp once famously proclaimed, yellow teeth are aging! Fortunately, they are so easy to fix! A friend recently told me that she gets her teeth profess-ionally cleaned at the dentist’s office three times a year instead of twice, and I immediately decided to do the same thing. Change Up Your Manicure I am not saying that there is anything wrong with a French manicure. Wait, yes, yes I am. I know this is controversial, but for now, the classic French manicure in either soft pink or white tips is dated. Don’t be afraid to break out of the French manicure box! Ditch the Boring Bag. Your bag should be a beautiful, high-quality statement piece. It should not be boring, or frumpy, or dated. After all, you carry it every day, and a blah bag can bring down your whole outfit. A stiff bag with a faux exotic print embossed onto the leather looks so dated. Invest in a status bag, if you can, or, for more affordable options that are still on-point stylewise, look to lines like Z Spoke from Zac Posen, Michael Kors, and Rebecca Minkoff. Grow Your Hair Out or Have It Cut Shorter. Some women immediately cut their hair after having kids. It’s like a rite of passage. 1. Have baby. 2. Buy yoga pants. 3. Chop hair off. Some women still have the same long straight hair they sported so cutely in high school or college even though they graduated in 2007. Here’s a question: “How many times has someone complimented you on your hairstyle in the last 12 months?” Why is that an

important question? Because the number of compliments you’ve received on your hairstyle in the last 12 months is an indicator of how many compliments you’re going to receive about your hair in the next 12 months. If you’ve had two or fewer compliments, it’s time to make a change because your hair isn’t doing you any favors. Your hair frames your face! It should enhance your look every day! Go to the most expensive salon you can afford, at least for the initial cut and style. Then, take photos from every angle that day so that other stylists can duplicate it for you. Ditch the Baggy Clothes So, so, so many women think they are bigger than they are. They wear long baggy tees and slouchy sweatshirts in an attempt to hide it, which actually ends up making them look bigger. Next time you’re shopping, try the smaller size. Or, if you are used to wearing your clothes a little too snug, try the next size up. Clothes that don’t fit are unflattering, unattractive, and most of all, aging. Pick a Fresh, New Lipcolor So we’ve heard how a too-dark, too-matte lipstick can age you, and how the opposite – a nude, washedout lip – is also true. Your best pick? An ultra-hydrating color with a little bit of sheen in a mid-toned flattering

color. Whether you prefer the subtlety of a lip stain or the pop of a bolder shade, make sure the color complements your skin tone and brightens your complexion. Use Sunscreen. Every day. Even when it’s gray. Use an antioxidant-packed formula on the face, neck, chest, ears and back of the neck every morning, and a body lotion with SPF on extremities. In sunnier months, switch your regular hand cream for a moisturizing sunscreen. Use a SkinFirming Body Cream I have been told that a cream can’t

take the place of exercise, but who has time for that kind of negativity? I personally love the way firming creams leave skin taut, glowing, and, well, firm. I am always on the hunt for the perfect all-purpose body cream, one that makes you firm and glowy, with just a hint of color.

Five Home Improvement Upgrades That Add Value If you are looking to add value to your house, why not try out some home improvement upgrades? Here are five home improvement upgrades that add value… It can be super exciting to embark on home improvement projects, but it’s even better when the upgrades you opt for add value to your home. It’s worth bearing in mind, however, that some improvements might be worthwhile to you personally, they may not increase the value of the house to others. In this article, we’ll sum up our top five ways to add value to your home through improvements which you — and future buyers — will benefit from. Here are the top home improvement upgrades that add value…

1. Add insulation In addition to increasing the value of your home, installing energy-saving insulation will also reduce your energy bills as well as ensure you’re minimising your carbon footprint. If you opt to insulate your loft or basement, this is a job that you can easily do yourself with a little bit of time and patience, but if you’re insulating your walls then we recommend you hire a professional to do it right. Another method of insulation is double glazing — double glaze your windows to further lock in warmth and add value to your home. 2. Upgrade your heating system Next on our list of home improvement upgrades that add value is to upgrade your heating system. Adding or upgrading your heating system is a failsafe way to add value to your home. You can do this with a few options, such as replacing windows (or add double glazing if possible, as mentioned in tip #1), seal any drafts

around doors and windows or replace a boiler. If your existing boiler is due an upgrade and has passed the point of repair, then it’s a worthwhile investment to get a new boiler installed in your home. 3. Improve your plumbing Don’t fancy rattling pipes, cold showers and burst pipes? We didn’t think so. Upgrading your plumbing

system not only adds value to your home, but also ensures consistent water pressure and temperature and reduces any stressful situations with leaking or flooding. Pressurised plumbing systems are an extremely popular option as they eliminate the need for a header tank and therefore gives you more space. 4. Be more energy efficient There’s a number of ways to be more energy efficient and

consequently add value to your home, such as updating your lighting to LED bulbs. LED is extremely energy efficient and uses less heat and electricity for the same light output. If you have a larger budget and are looking for something a little bit substantial, then adding solar panels and turning the sun’s light into free energy at home is a fantastic investment. 5. Upgrade your kitchen The kitchen is often

considered as ‘the heart of the home’ — and spending a little time and money upgrading it can do wonders to the added value. From installing energy-efficient appliances to simply giving it a fresh look with a lick of paint, there’s a range of improvements you can make depending on your budget and time. These are some top home improvement upgrades that add value to your home.

Chairman Lauds Esports Progress Alan Pace speaks about the partnership between Burnley FC and Burnley College Burnley Football Club Chairman Alan Pace has lauded the recently announced partnership between the club and Burnley College who have become Burnley FC’s first Esports Academy. The Clarets are the first Premier League club to partner with an education establishment to promote the business of Esports through a BTEC qualification in Esports developed by the college. The BTEC covers business marketing, video game design, event planning, production, broadcasting and journalism to highlight the various pathways students can enter into the

rapidly growing industry. Alongside providing students with a wide-ranging education in Esports, the course will also act as a pathway into Burnley FC’s Pro Esports teams as well as additional learning and business opportunities with the club. Chairman Pace said the club was delighted to have partnered with Burnley College and sees the relationship as another chance for the Clarets to innovate off the pitch and appeal to a brand-new audience. He said: “We’re really excited about this partnership and the opportunities it will afford to students in our local area to learn, develop and hopefully go on to do some really cool things in the Esports space. “We wanted to develop the club’s Esports offering when we first came in as we feel it caters to a rapidly growing, inclusive audience who we want to appeal to as a club

– this is the next step in that process. “The fact that Burnley College run this amazing BTEC and are right on our doorstep made this partnership a no brainer for us. As a Premier League football club, we hope we can bring some additional expertise and opportunities to the table for the students in the local area to forge closer links with us. That’s whether they join our Esports Academy or if we can help them develop their education or business opportunities.” The new facility will be named the Burnley FC Esports Academy with players from the college representing Burnley FC’s new Esports Academy

team named “BEES” in the National Esports League on titles such as Rocket League and Overwatch. Some players will also join up with the Burnley FC Esports Pro’s in the FIFA 22 Global Series. There are plans over time to increase the size of the joint facilities used at both the college and Turf Moor as the course and teams expand. Over the last 10 years Esports has grown exponentially and is on course to become a $2 Billion industry, with new Esports arenas being introduced all over the world as demand continues to grow. Walk And Talk Founder Continuing Movember Journey

The founder of the Walk and Talk For Men programme in Preston starts another year supporting Movember today, on 1st November. Rob Flood first began taking part in the initiative – which sees men grow moustaches every November in the name of testicular cancer, prostate cancer and men’s suicide – more than a decade ago, and has since become a Movember community ambassador. Alongside growing a moustache, men taking part will raise funds for the Movember Foundation, which supports men tackling said issues. Rob, whose own fundraising target is £1,000, explained how becoming a community ambassador set him on a journey that saw Walk and Talk For Men come to fruition in Preston, and subsequently lead to Walk and Talk For Lilywhites – which is run by PNECET and is for both men and women of all ages – being formed, too. “Last year, I set myself a personal challenge to walk

250km for Movember, and as part of that, I met another community ambassador, James Mace, from Essex,” Rob said. “He had set up a Walk and Talk For Men group and I wanted to do something in Preston that would be more prolonged so that I could actively be in the community and help men to get out and come along for a walk, in Avenham and Miller Park. That’s been quite successful and we have our year anniversary coming up next year.” Walk and Talk For Lilywhites was then formed in July of this year and Rob recently came down to join the walk, and was pleased to notice the benefits it is providing. “It was nice being able to get down. It’s a big group. It was really nice to see the mix of people and see people who don’t necessarily know each other getting together and sharing a walk. “You can come and talk about anything and everything in a comfortable environment. With it being

outside, for those people who might be isolated, it gets them out of the house and speaking to other people. “It was quite refreshing to see people getting together in an outdoor environment with people they don’t know and being quite comfortable to do that.” Rob is hosting an event at the Market Ale House in Leyland as part of his fundraising activities on Saturday 6th November from 5.30pm, with live music, a raffle and a shave down for men taking part in Movember, with all welcome to join and support the fundraising efforts. Find out more here. Walk and Talk For Lilywhites is a weekly walking group hosted by Preston North End Community and Education Trust. Anyone is welcome to join, with walkers meeting at the Sir Tom Finney Splash every Thursday from 10.15am, before setting off around Moor Park at 10.30am. Turf Moor To Host England International

Under-21s to play November qualifier at Burnley International football is returning to Turf Moor, with the Clarets chosen to host an England Under-21 fixture in November. Burnley will stage England’s European Championship qualifier against the Czech Republic on Thursday, 11 November (KO 7pm). The fixture will be England’s fourth game in Group B as the U21 side – now under the management of former Republic of Ireland international midfielder Lee Carsley – bids to reach the 2023 finals in Romania and Georgia. Burnley chairman Alan Pace said: “We are honoured to

be hosting England U21s and bringing international football back to Burnley. “As a club with a passion for developing young homegrown talent, I am sure our supporters will welcome the opportunity to see the country’s most exciting players at Turf Moor and get behind England in this important UEFA Under 21 Championship qualifier.” England kick off their qualifying campaign at home to Kosovo at Stadium mk on Tuesday, 7 September as they begin their quest to reach their ninth successive appearance in the finals of the competition. Clarets’ winger Dwight McNeil – who is too old to

be eligible this time around – helped England reach the 2021 finals in Hungary and Slovenia before Aidy Boothroyd’s squad missed out on a place in the knockout stages. Turf Moor was due to host a European U21 qualifier between England and Turkey in March, 2020 before the pandemic forced the game to be postponed but now gets the chance to stage a third international at this level following games in 2014 and 1995. TICKET PRICES Tickets for this game are on sale now in the Upper and Lower North Stand initially, from the Turf Moor ticket office and online.
