I have learned many great lessons from the master teacher called Life, but even still I need a reminder to live for today. Here are five things that keep me in the moment.

o C n w O r u O t s a o R We
1. There’s always time for what’s important—what matters most. 2. I am capable of more— stretching outside my comfort zone. When my thoughts go to “you can’t,” I stop and reexamine the thought. Fear, most likely has the loudest voice—if—I allow myself to hear and believe it.

3. Today is always a special occasion. I’m using the china and crystal when I set the table. The scratches and chips are just a reminder of the memories made. I’m no longer focused on tangible things that I seldom touch. I care less about the material stuff and more about the love and lives that touch me. 4. You can make a habit of gratitude. Every day I say, “thank you” to remember how appreciative I am of everything, and everyone who brings me joy. 5. We are not alone. We are all connected through our stories we share. In The Garden
The By Brenda Powell Today, one of the neighborhood hummingbirds visited us, drinking nectar from the Yuletide camellia in our front yard. My husband and I were both present to witness this event. I see hummingbirds almost daily between my garden and the nursery, but this seemed special. My husband being with me was significant because he is the one that first believed each encounter with the hummingbird is a blessing. For him, of all the winged creatures, the hummingbird interacts and connects with him the most. So today my mind said, “We are blessed by Mr. Hummingbird,” and that got me thinking. I needed to write this article and I was struggling with the other ideas I had. I did not feel that I could give anyone advice. I realized, as I thought about the hummingbird, that what truly is in my heart is the idea that nature, the natural world
Gift of the Hummingbird is a blessing. It is a gift and I believe that we, as humans, are meant to take care of it. We, is you and me, but it’s also companies, politicians, other countries and other people. And we haven’t been doing such a great job of caring for our planet. I need nature. I need plants, flowers, forest, soil and creatures. Those things calm me, ground me and keep me present in the moment. They connect me to something greater than myself. When I relax in that natural world my mind is free. Generally in nature, I am worry-free and that allows me to be creative. The natural world feeds and clothes me. It provides the water I drink. Natural beings provide my income. The bees that pollinate the crops and the four-legged creatures that keep me company are part of that world. So are the twolegged creatures I call family and friends.
I have spent my life trying to add to and care for the plants, soil, creatures and natural world. I plant my landscape so that I can have that secluded spot where I can unwind. I garden organically 90% of the time, now. I recycle and reuse, and I’m working on the reduce. And so on. Often I question myself, “Have I made the right choices? Have I helped and not harmed? Have I made a difference?” I hope so. No matter what the answers are, I will continue to do what I can to help care for our natural world. I will take pride in my garden again. I will talk customers into planting trees. I will feel more confident to give advice.

“Have I made the right choices? Have I helped and not harmed? Have I made a difference?” I hope so.
So thank you Mr. Hummingbird for visiting me today and reminding me why I do what I do. You are a blessing, nature is a gift, and I am grateful.

Real Estate Update
Holiday Conundrum...
To Decorate or not to Decorate? By Annette Sievert One of the questions when listing a house during the holiday season is whether or not to decorate. I recommend decorating BUT do not go overboard. Some home owners like to decorate for every occasion. Of course that requires lots of items, those need to be taken out of storage, displayed, removed, and exchanged. So think whether in addition to always having your house showing ready you are able to keep this going, clean and ready. Decorating can give a house a homey, cozy feeling – or it can overwhelm and take away from the house itself. And that is what you are selling, your house, not your personal decoration items and tastes. Exterior lights, tastefully, subtly and well installed, not blinking, in your face and hanging haphazardly, can create an inviting feeling. Always think though that less is more. This is not the opportunity to outdo your neighbor. Your buyers
are coming to see your house, not your holiday display. Items on the porch need to stay out of the way not to create a hazard when showings happen after dark and that scarecrow behind a door can cause a heart attack in the dark… Indoors opt for things that cannot easily break, are as much out of reach for children to touch as possible (some parents do not control their children well during showings and a broker can only do so much), are not overwhelming the room and showcase, not smother, features like a fire place. Keep items like personalized stockings out. Your buyers want to imagine themselves in your home and not feel like intruders. A Christmas tree should be to scale of the room. If it takes 30 square feet of living room -- it is way too big. But if you have a big hallway where a centerpiece Christmas tree can have a wow effect, go for it.
Try to stay with a color scheme that works with your furniture and enhances the wall colors. Keep anything valuable away. Your heirloom sterling silver ornaments should stay in a safe place until you are in your new home. Lastly, although it is the holiday season, do not scent the rooms. This is important. Your love for potpourri and baked pumpkin pie might not be shared by your buyer. Scented candles or plug-ins can cause an allergic reaction or the buyer might think you want to cover something up, not helpful to sell your house. Scent is our strongest sense and neutral is the best choice. Enjoy the Season and sell well!

On the Money
Smart Saving Strategies For Each Decade By Sten Carlson
Whether you can still count the days since you started your first job or you are nearing the end of your career, saving for retirement should be a top financial priority. You have the potential to spend decades in retirement, so it’s worth committing to saving today. Here are some fundamental strategies to think about at different ages as you seek to maximize your retirement savings: In your 20s get started You are in the early years of your working life, likely facing tradeoffs as you decide how to allocate your salary. You want to prioritize key financial goals such as buying a new home or paying off student loans, while also maintaining a healthy sum to enjoy life today and tomorrow. Although retirement seems a long way off, time is truly on your side if you begin saving for it now. The earlier you can begin setting money aside for retirement, the more growth you can potentially achieve. An individual saving $200 per month from age 25 to age 65, earning an average return of seven percent per year, would accumulate $512,663 in that time. By waiting until age 35 to begin a comparable savings plan, your savings would build to only $242,575. The sooner you start saving the better.
In your 30s keep up the momentum You are still in the early stages of saving for retirement but it’s important to stay committed to it. If you haven’t started yet, don’t delay. Many people in this age group see their income increase due to experience or promotions, which can make it easier to allocate more to retirement. Take full advantage of your workplace retirement plan, at least to the extent that you can earn a matching contribution from your employer. Many employers offer to match the equivalent of three percent or more of your income if you defer a comparable amount into a retirement plan. If you can, consider setting aside 10 percent or more of your income toward retirement. In your 40s maximize and diversify At this stage in life, you hopefully have a solid retirement foundation and are starting to see glimpses of how you might like to spend your retirement. Take the time to assess your retirement savings, to ensure they are on track and welldiversified. Along with pretax contributions to your workplace savings plan, consider saving after-tax dollars in a tax-advantaged way. Investing in a Roth IRA or, if available, a Roth 401(k)
or similar employer’s plan allows you to build savings that may qualify for tax-free withdrawals in retirement. In your 50s align your saving with your goals At this point, your children may be moving out of the house and income is reaching its peak, potentially allowing for more dollars to allocate to your retirement fund. Savings may be balanced with caring for an aging parent, or working to pay off your mortgage. Now is the time to make your retirement dreams more specific. How do you want to spend your retirement days? Honestly answer that question, discuss with your spouse or significant other, and compare the cost of your planned activities with your savings. If there’s a gap, calculate how much more you need. Once you reach age 50, you can take advantage of “catch-up” contribution rules. This allows you to invest an extra $1,000 per year in an IRA (up to $6,500 under current rules) and another $6,000 in a workplace savings plan (up to $24,000). In your 60s and beyond prepare to reach your goals As long as you continue to work, you can still set aside money in retirement plans. Even if you’ve met your savings goal, you can continue to benefit from the

tax advantages of workplace savings plans and IRAs. More important is to begin to adjust your portfolio mix. Your investment time horizon is beginning to narrow, and you want to protect your nest egg from potential market volatility. Another consideration at this stage in life is deciding how to draw down your assets. For example, you may decide to use a portion of your savings to meet the initial years of expenses, while continuing to invest for your later years. A key part of this strategy is determining when to take Social Security. If you are still working, waiting as long as you can to first claim Social Security may be wise, as it will allow you to earn the highest monthly benefit. Retirement saving is personal Remember, there’s no onesize-fits-all strategy for retirement. The information provided here offers general guidelines for retirement savers at various ages. Your specific circumstances and spending needs will determine how much you have to save, and how much you’ll need to save for the retirement you want. No matter your age, consider discussing your goals and needs with a financial advisor who can help you develop a personalized retirement savings strategy.

Open for Business - The Natty Dresser
Proprieters Oscar and Tamalynne Hult, with “Haberdasherette” Rebecca Powell
Natty: (especially of a person or an article of clothing) smart and fashionable. Men, have you been wondering where clothes come from these days? Have you spent soulcrushing hours wandering around a cavernous mall only to be visually assaulted by t-shirts with silkscreens of Bruce Lee and Bob Marley, Samurai swords, and cell-phone kiosks? Stuffed bear anyone? Nascar jacket? Whatever happened to dashing men’s clothing, personal service, and the idea of building a wardrobe that would last -- comprised of clothing you could actually
wear outside your house or a carnival midway?
even have a vintage shoe-shine stand in the store.
If you grew up watching Bond, James Bond, or if you just wish to explore the world of suave and debonaire, the answer is in Downtown Albany on First Street -- The Natty Dresser. Oscar and Tamalynne Hult have built a fantastic business as the Mid-Valley’s premier, full-service men’s store offering quality men’s clothing, tailoring, tuxedo & suit rental and more. They
Both Oscar and Tamalynn clearly have an eye for design with a big dose of flair for the dramatic -- the interior of the store is always changing and always looks fantastic. Walking around in the Natty Dresser is like a master class in “retail -how to.” Interesting vignettes are always appearing, rich, dark wood & leather mixes with the quality products you want to own. The coolest
part? The dressing room, with the old-school rotary phone, desk lamps, and prints of, of course... James Bond. And it’s Sean Connery Bond, not the imposters who followed. From Albany with love. If you’re holiday shopping, and you’ve got a man on your list, your first, and perhaps only stop, should absolutely be The Natty Dresser.

EVERY TIME I REACH FOR A CHIPPED PLATE, I AM REMINDED OF YOU
Children teach us what’s important. Children aren’t complicated. And they can teach us a lot about how to enjoy life. They are excited about life, open to learn, curious about everything and not afraid to dance in public. I will admit, I’ve got the dancing thing down to a somewhat embarrassing science. And they ask a lot of questions – Why…? How…? Are we there yet?

Children bring us back to what’s important. As the holiday season approaches I am reminded of the time my son Courtney taught me a valuable lesson about what’s important when I asked him to set the table while I finished making dinner. It was a typical weekday filled with all the usual things that occupy our time work, school, homework for the kids and contemplating what to fix for dinner. From the kitchen I could hear the rattling of the dishes and the placement of silverware as Courtney set the table for our meal. Bringing the serving dishes to the dining room I looked at the table he had set and The Heart of the Valley Edition | www.willametteliving.com
with a puzzled look said, “Court, why did you use the good china and glassware? We only use those for special occasions.” Without skipping a beat he smiled, and with joyous curiosity asked me, “Aren’t we special mom? I really like these dishes.” You know the rest. Lesson learned. As an adult we can get into bad habits pretty easily and forget what is important but kids seem to be able to bring you back to reality, to what is really important. I talk and write a lot about what we are teaching our children and what they are learning from us. Years later I wrote about the golden nugget of wisdom I gained from my son and included it in the Five Things article on page five. Let’s make this season of our life – whatever it is – just a bit more special with the special things we tend to save. Don’t wait for that perfect moment – it’s already here. Cheers!

Here’s to Your Health
Dwell Upon Gratitude By Kris Denning “The law of concentration states that whatever you dwell upon, grows. The more you think about something, the more it becomes part of your reality.” I heard this many years ago from lecturer, Brian Tracey. In my experience, it is without a doubt true. I used to spend time like so many others, planning for my happiness to be someday, after I had more money in the bank or situations in my life changed. And now I am grateful that it didn’t take a lifetime for me to stop holding my happiness hostage, contingent upon the future. By focusing on what I have and not continuously mulling over what I lack, I have altered my perspective, and the course of my life. It is so easy to dwell upon the negative aspects of life. The news media helps us to do this with their “if it bleeds it leads” mentality. And with the growing amount of time spent on social media these days, we spend countless hours comparing our lives to those of other people. Notice
when we get sick or injured, how easy it is to reprimand our bodies for failing us. How often do you thank your body for getting you this far? Time spent thinking about the good in our lives, what is working, whatever that may be, will naturally help us to develop a more positive outlook. And like a magnet, we will attract more good things into our lives. If you have been dwelling on all the stressors in life for some time, likely you’ve built up a great deal of tension in your body. Get up and move, exercise however you can. Your body needs the tension release so that you may clear your head and shift your thoughts into another direction. Fine tune your focus on what you are thankful for and make a habit of giving thanks each day. I like to do this at the end of the day before I sleep, so that I may drift off to slumber with a positive mind set. If you’ve been dwelling on the negative, this may be challenging at first. Keep it simple.
If you’ve read this far, you can be grateful for your vision. And your breath. Take a deep one. If you are currently ill or injured, take time to notice all the systems in your body that are still working, and give them your thanks. If you love or have ever loved, be grateful for that beautiful experience or lesson that it provided. Have you noticed a friendly smile recently? I bet it was uplifting! Be grateful for it. Any plants or trees in view? They are providing you with oxygen. It is a gift. Someone compliment you? Don’t deflect it, just say thank you. Has anyone ever taught you anything, good or bad? Of course they have. Be thankful. Making a habit of feeling grateful will help you to better recognize when the negative thoughts come back, and you can steer them in a better direction. Dwell on the gratitude. The time for happiness is now.

Fantasyland By Kurt Andersen Available through all major online retailers “Fantasyland” traces the development of our distinctly American national character from the moment the first Englishman set foot in the new world to the election of Donald J. Trump, the acceptance of “alternative facts”, and the shape of our 21st Century culture. The book reads at a pretty fast clip, rather like the flow of a thriller when the clues are adding up. Just breathe, and take it all in.

Making Room for What You Love Most “That house was a perfect house whether you liked food or sleep or story telling or singing or reading or just sitting and thinking best, or a pleasant mixture of them all. Merely to be there was a cure for weariness.” (J.R.R. Tolkien)
By Tinsa Schweitzer I love Tolkien’s description of the “perfect house.” This is what I want my house to be all year round, but especially during the holiday season when we all make time to gather and celebrate and eat and give. So how do you spot the potential in your home and make room for what you love most? Think about this: When you walk through your home are there rooms that draw you in? Are there items on display that are meaningful to you? What is it about that room or those items that speaks to you? Or maybe what you value most is the life that has been lived within the walls of your home. Start by making a list of what you love. It will shed new light on what you already have and provide inspiration for what follows. When searching out the potential of your home, it’s easy to overlook the intangibles
that bring it to life. I’m talking about how the atmosphere of your home contributes to the day to day experience of living in it and what your guests experience when they gather there. You create the atmosphere, but does your home reflect who you are and cultivate the environment you want others to experience? Write down a mission statement for your home. Use this statement to inform your decisions for any changes you are considering.
lifestyle better. Think about how you use that space, or want to use that space, and make a list of the features that are important to you and why.
Where do you spend the most time? Sometimes it is the simplest things that can enhance the spaces where we work and play, like fresh paint in a hue that motivates or calms you. Or a functional piece of furniture that makes your space more enjoyable and conducive to work or study. But if simple changes aren’t enough, maybe it’s time to move that wall and open things up, or rethink that kitchen and how to make it serve your
So as you envision your “perfect house” and prepare for this holiday season, remember what it is that you love about your home, focus on improvements that cultivate the environment you want to create and serves your lifestyle better, and clear out anything that takes away from that.
Clear the clutter. Remove those items from your home that didn’t make it on the list of what you love, doesn’t fit the mission statement for your home, and doesn’t serve your lifestyle. It will free your mind and inspire creativity.

Meet Your Maker - 4 Spirits Distillery
Sara Wayt, Dawson Officer & Bar Staff
Oregon abounds with clever people making all sorts of things. One of the things these busy beavers are making, which seems to generate a lot of interest, is beverages containing alcohol. We were going to call this section “Meet The Vintner” -- being in the heart of Oregon’s wine country and all, but then we remembered cider and spirits, and cheese, and furniture, and chocolates, berries, airplane parts -- the list goes on. So, “Meet Your Maker” it is. First up is Dawson Officer and company at 4 Spirits Distillery in South Corvallis.
The name 4 Spirits is a tribute to four fallen soldiers Dawson served with in Iraq. The proud military theme runs through the heart of the entire operation. Dawson is a “local boy” and a product of our military and wants to honor the service of the brave young men he served with, who didn’t come home. He’s doing them proud.
local maker moved right next door - Block 15 Brewing. Together they make up the “anchor tenants” of an up and coming Southtown hotspot. The property is perfect for their vision -- lots of open spaces to gaze upon while sampling great food and drink, plenty of parking, no hassle to get there.
Either Dawson’s parents did a good job, or the U.S. Military did - we suspect both had something to do with the bootstrapping go-getter we spoke with at the distillery. Clearly, not one who takes no for an answer, he built the business with hard work and ingenuity. Dawson’s new facility was a family affair, built with the assistance of his General Contractor brother, and the rest of his family. He learned to distill spirits by doing. He has a hand in label design for his products. He clearly takes pride in things right down to the appetizer menu for happy hour. He’s hands-on for sure.
4 Spirits is expanding their offerings from the still, and they are expanding the business geographically. They have a great product, and a great team -- they are poised for great success. If you’re looking for a place to spend a little time at-ease, post up at 4 Spirits for a burger and sip of Dawson’s fine spirits. You have your orders. 3405 SW Deschutes, Corvallis. Men’s Health
New Treatments for Prostate Issues, From the Docs at Samaritan Health Services New treatment for enlarged prostate minimizes side effects For men, more frequent trips to the bathroom may be a part of aging but that doesn’t mean it should be ignored. It is common for the prostate to continue to grow throughout a man’s life, but as the prostate enlarges it can cause urinary problems and a condition called benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).
is a surgical technique that uses a laser to remove excess tissue that is blocking the urethra. Another surgical option is transurethral resection (TURP), where the doctor uses instruments to trim the excess prostate tissue. Both of these procedures are performed under general anesthesia. Patients are often able to go home the same day after laser vaporization but TURP usually requires an overnight stay in the hospital.
The prostate gland surrounds the urethra, where urine moves from the bladder out of the body. Enlarged prostate, or BPH, can cause the need to urinate more often or difficulty emptying the bladder which can be bothersome, especially at night.
“Medication typically has good results for mild cases of enlarged prostate,” said Laciak. “But some men don’t want to be on a pill every day for the rest of their life or are worried about the side effects of medications and traditional surgery, especially sexual side effects.”
“We typically begin to see problems with enlarged prostate around the age of 50, and then it becomes more likely as you age,” said Robert Laciak, MD, of Samaritan Urology – Corvallis.
32
Treating an enlarged prostate can be as simple as taking a daily pill. For more moderate to severe cases, surgery is usually the next step. Laser vaporization
A newer surgical option is a prostate lift called UroLift®, which uses tiny implants to physically hold the prostate away from the urethra. This is a mechanical opening of the area as opposed to a traditional cutting of excess tissue, which helps to minimize side effects. The procedure is performed with IV sedation and patients are able to go home the same day. There is

usually no need for a catheter. “Laser vaporization and transurethral resection are still very common and appropriate in many cases, but for people who fit the criteria for UroLift, it’s a minimally invasive, long term solution to enlarged prostate,” said Laciak, who specializes in the procedure. “It’s a nice in-between for the person who doesn’t want to take a pill and doesn’t want a more invasive procedure.” Robert Laciak, MD, sees patients at Samaritan Urology – Corvallis. He is a board-certified urologist and has been with Samaritan Health Services since 2011. He enjoys caring for both male and female patients and treating a wide variety of urological conditions. Samaritan urologists Layron Long, MD, and Jeffrey Palmgren, MD, also perform the UroLift procedure. Time, it’s The Best Holiday Gift
Every year the post-Thanksgiving madness seems to start a little earlier. Many stores opened their doors at midnight or earlier. Most people don’t enjoy fighting the late night mobs or the mall traffic at this time of the year. Nor do they like the time it takes to accomplish it all. You can pull the plug on all of this by deciding to give someone special a holiday gift certificate for permanent makeup. Two things everyone wants are an attractive appearance and more time. Permanent Makeup gives both. Women who have invested in themselves with permanent makeup don’t waste time “putting on their face” in the morning or touching up their makeup as they move through the day. Getting out the door in the morning is faster - cleanse, moisturize and you’re ready to go. If a woman takes 10 minutes a day to apply and remove makeup, that is 61 hours of time per year. Plus, gentlemen… wouldn’t it be great to not have to wait for your lady while she puts on her makeup? Because it is long lasting and difficult to remove, it is essential to have permanent makeup applied by a highly qualified artist. Many people feel they would benefit from permanent makeup services, however are reluctant to proceed because they don’t know how to select a good artist. Similar to finding a surgeon, this is not a service you want to bargain shop for. You will want to have a consultation to see actual client photos and learn everything you need to make an informed choice. Today, many professional permanent cosmetic specialists are members of the world’s leading, not-for-profit society devoted to this field, the Society of Permanent Cosmetic Professionals (SPCP). This organization sets standards of practice for its members, which assures the public of the highest levels of professionalism. With that assurance you can look great and save time too.
Cheryl Lohman of Image by Design is a Licensed Esthetician and Permanent Makeup Artist and is a Lifetime Member in the Society of Permanent Cosmetic Professionals and Associated Skin Care Professionals.
