FAMILIES
KIDS
Generations of families have created lifelong memories gathering at The Greystone Inn. Beyond the lake, the sport and adventure activities, families also enjoy the opportunity to share in experiences unique to this area: stargazing at the Pisgah Astronomical Research Institute, gem mining in the ancient Blue Ridge Mountains, visiting “The Shadow of the Bear” or the famous O.P. Taylor’s toy store in Brevard, grabbing a sketch pad or playing board games by the fire, the opportunities to connect as a family are endless.
ADVENTURE HIGHLIGHTS
As a Greystone guest, there’s really no need to get in your car – there’s so much to do on property. However, should you wish to venture out for the day, we invite you to explore our Adventures & Activities section of this book. For your convenience, we’ve highlighted some of our favorite off-site family adventures below.
MOST UNIQUE ACTIVITY
Only seen from mid-October to November, “The Shadow of the Bear” is created from the mountain peaks casting a shadow in the shape of a bear on the fall foliage. It can only be seen for 30 minutes, starting at 5:30pm, so make sure you plan your outing accordingly. For the best view, head to Rhodes Big Overlook off of Highway 64. Don’t forget your camera!
BEST FAMILY ACTIVITY
Head to Bear Tracks in Lake Toxaway to go Gem Mining! Sift through the dirt to discover a variety of gems including amethyst, rubies, sapphires, emeralds, moonstone, tourmaline and aquamarine. You can mine for buckets of gems to take home!
THE #1 TOY STORE IN THE SOUTH!
The famous O.P. Taylor’s toy store in Brevard is a favorite of kids and adults alike. The shop is 6,000 square feet of fun and hands-on excitement. There’s a reason that O.P. Taylor continues to be the #1 Toy Store in the South.
BEST ICE CREAM SHOP
After an afternoon of toy shopping, you’ll want to satisfy your sweet tooth at Rocky’s Grill and Soda Shop in Brevard. Our go-to is the famous Rocky’s Shake and you’ll love the family-friendly, 50’s atmosphere. With an entire menu full of sweet treats, you’re sure to find your new favorite.
MOST ADVENTUROUS ACTIVITY
Hike to Schoolhouse Falls, a 25-foot waterfall that tumbles over a small cave into a perfect mountain style swimming hole. Great place for a picnic!
OUT OF THIS WORLD – OUTER SPACE FUN
PARI (Pisgah Astronomical Research Institute), the former NASA site is now open to the public. Enjoy scenic views, hiking trails, campus tours, Space Shuttle artifacts, satellites and meteorite & mineral displays. A 200-acre working research education campus with hands-on science displays. Truly out of this world fun.
GARDENS & NATURE… TELL ME MORE!
The Southern Highlands Reserve is a native plant arboretum and research center dedicated to sustaining the natural ecosystems of the Blue Ridge Mountains. It is absolutely beautiful, tremendously peaceful, educational and a great way to spend time with family and friends.
