REPORT ON PHILANTHROPY 2017-2018
A Year of Being Bold for Blue Dear Friends, On behalf of the Wilmington Friends School Board of Trustees, I would like to extend a sincere thank you to all who are recognized in this Annual Report on Philanthropy. Whether you made a financial gift to the School, or shared your many talents, your generosity affirms our Quaker values. Your gifts allow us to invest in our teachers’ most promising ideas while expanding the ways in which we support students and their families. As I reflect on the year, I can say, without a doubt, that this community knows how to “Be Bold for Blue.” You responded to ambitious giving challenges; you stretched to new Leadership Society levels; you set a new Annual Fund record at Friends with over $1,062,147 donated this past school year. There are many stories of your incredible generosity celebrated throughout this report. I hope you enjoy reading about a few of the many groups within our Friends community that have contributed to the success of this year including the Home & School Association, the Class of 2018 Senior Fund, Reunion Classes, and the 1748 Society. I have highlighted these groups as representative of the wonderful generosity of our parents, grandparents, parents of alumni, alumni, faculty and staff, Board of Trustees, and the many friends of our school community. The gifts to WFS from these groups, and from all who gave, make the multitude of student accomplishments listed in the rest of this magazine possible. It is through your giving that WFS is able to purchase new athletic equipment, musical instruments, a smart board and other new technology, new classroom chairs, and so much more. These improvements will be enjoyed by students in every division next year. We are grateful for your participation in our school community and your generosity that allows the School to thrive. Thank you for helping us provide the environment that inspires our students to boldly lead the way into a more just and true society. It is inspiring to be part of a community that cares so deeply about the mission of our school. In friendship,
Susan K.H. Kelley Chair, Board of Trustees Wilmington Friends School

Smith McMillan 22nd Annual 5K Saturday, October 28, 2017
On a beautiful fall morning, close to 200 runners and walkers kicked off Homecoming Day by participating in the 22nd Annual Smith McMillan Memorial 5K in memory of Jonathan Bacon Smith ’83 and Wendy Smith McMillan ’77. Participants enjoyed music, food, and a kid’s fun run. We received $9,000 in sponsorships and all the 5K proceeds supported the Financial Aid Endowment at Friends. Special thanks to Amanda Singleton Hay ’95 and Katy Connolly for chairing another successful year and to the SM5K race committee, racers, and volunteers. We’d also like to thank race director Jon Clifton ’80 for making things go smoothly.

Spring Fling
Saturday, May 19, 2018 Despite having to move the activities to the West Gym due to the rainy weather, we had a great turn out for Spring Fling this year. Fun was had by all, with music by Alumni DJ Ciara Graves ’16, food by Ole Tapas, ice cream from Frozen Sunshine, and games in the Kids’ Korner led by students participating in the QUEST Trip to El Paso. These students raised $800 for the Cristo Rey Lutheran Church in El Paso, TX. Thank you to the Home and School Association, the Office of Admissions, event sponsors and volunteers for your generosity and support.

Quaker Quiz Night
Saturday, March 10, 2018 Thank you to our community for another successful Quaker Quiz Night. Despite having to reschedule due to a power outage, we had close to 250 people in attendance and raised close to $20,000 for the School! We are very grateful for the Quaker Quiz Night Committee, led by, co-clerks Tonya Baynes and Kim Facciolo, without whom this event would not have been possible. Among other things, this committee put together a silent auction and 20 enticing bonus baskets with items from local stores, restaurants and other businesses. We would also like to thank Dan Butler from Piccolina Toscana for cooking and providing the delicious food, and Mike Anderson ’08 from Big Oyster Brewery in Lewes for bringing his microbrews. Be on the lookout for information about Quaker Quiz Night 2019, Saturday, March 9.

A Family Legacy of Giving to Friends For the Hendricks Clan – Mike and Marilyn, and their son Matt ’79 and his wife Terry – giving back to Friends has truly been a family affair. During his career at Hercules, where he was involved in dealmaking around the world, Mike’s experiences helped him develop an open-minded approach to business and life. As a teacher of English as a second language, working with students who came to America seeking a better life, Marilyn - and the entire family through her work - came to realize how lucky they were to live in the U.S. As a result of their career experiences, when they became Friends parents, and later when Mike served on the Board of Trustees, Mike and Marilyn became convinced of the positive impact the School had on the Wilmington community. As Matt explained, “They felt the School had the power to change the community and so they worked to increase the number of families who have an opportunity to send their children to the School.” On a personal level, Matt believes his time as a student at Friends formed the foundation of his values and of his work ethic. He was able to learn the importance of diversity and to appreciate a variety of perspectives. He and Terry view supporting their community as an obligation, and so they choose to support Friends and the positive impact they believe the School continues to have on Wilmington and, more broadly, on the state of Delaware. As he put it so eloquently, “We are certain young people who attend
Friends School become better people; how could we not support that through giving?” As True Blue donors during their lifetime, Matt believes that his parents made Friends a part of their legacy so that they could help strengthen the School’s endowment after they passed away. Their bequest to Friends has done just that, providing support for the School in perpetuity, and enhancing teaching and learning at Friends. With Mike and Marilyn as examples, it was an easy decision for Matt and Terry to make WFS a part of their estate plans. They view their legacy gift as, “a way to keep giving after we are no longer able; our legacy donation will provide support each year as our annual giving does today.” He continued, “Friends has been around since 1748 and, through legacy giving, we can help ensure it will be around for another couple hundred years.” Like all legacy gifts, the Hendricks Family’s bequests are part of the soul of Wilmington Friends School, and will have an impact at the School for generations to come. We are grateful to Mike and Marilyn, to Matt and Terry, and to all of the members of our 1748 Planned Giving Society, for making Friends a part of their final plans, and for helping to move Friends forward in powerful ways.

The Class of 1977 “40 for 40 Challenge”
Led by a matching gift challenge from classmates Jake Gehret and Liz Krahmer Keating, the Class of 1977 set out to raise $40,000 in honor of their 40th reunion in what was dubbed the “40 for 40 Challenge.” Gifts toward the challenge could be made either to the Annual Fund, or to the Smith-McMillan Endowment Fund, which was established in 1985 to support tuition aid in memory of their classmate, Wendy Smith McMillan, and her brother, Jonathan Bacon Smith ’83. Announced during a festive 40th reunion celebration at Vicmead Hunt Club last October - organized by Jake - the class rallied around this challenge. All told, 35% of the class gave a total of $56,249. This represents a 35% increase in participation over last year, and an increase of $20,784 in total giving over last year. Many thanks to Liz, Jake, and all of the members of the Class of 1977 for their incredible generosity, and for helping to move Friends forward in a very meaningful way.

ENDOWMENT GIVING Gifts to the endowment allow the School to fullfill its mission, to reach the goals we have for our program, and to shape and respond to opportunities presented by a fast-changing world. We are grateful for the alumni, faculty and staff, parents, and friends of the School who have made generous investments in the future of Wilmington Friends School by making gifts to the endowment. We would like to extend a special thank you to the classes of 1977 and 1967, both of whom made endowment gifts the focus of their reunion fundraising efforts this past year. Pete Wentz ’67 led the class gift committee. He spoke during the luncheon honoring the 50th reunion class and recalled a few fond memories of teachers like Mr. Weil. He said, “Friends also taught us to challenge conventional thinking. Mr. Weil made sure we didn’t automatically accept the history as recorded in the books.” Pete’s gratitude for his WFS teachers was shared by his classmates, and they decided to raise funds for the endowment in support of faculty and staff professional development. Along with their desire to provide opportunities for the faculty, they wanted to help strengthen the resources available for financial aid. With almost 50 percent of the student body receiving some degree of financial aid, the endowment for financial aid is increasingly important.
Established 1984 Purpose: Financial Aid
The Class of 1967 wanted to make a lasting impact on WFS in honor of their 50th reunion. As plans for their reunion last fall started to take shape, members of the class were reminded of their time at WFS, and discussions on how to best honor and pay forward these experiences began.
The committee worked hard and, to date, has secured almost $25,000 in cash and pledges towards the endowment, which will support the School in perpetuity. In addition to endowment gifts, the class contributed over $3,000 to the Annual Fund. WFS is grateful for the Class of 1967’s generosity, and the leadership of the gift committee.

The Perfect 90th Birthday Gift To celebrate Rod Teeple’s (’45) 90th birthday, his family wanted to do something special. His children thought of giving back to WFS, to honor their father’s many years of support and dedication to the School. Rod was on the Board of Trustees from 1992-2004, and served a term as Vice Chair, as well as General Chair, of the Campaign for Friends in the ’90s. The Campaign for Friends raised $10 million and helped construct the Athletic Center. In addition to Rod’s work on the campaign, he served as the Chair of the board’s development committee and helped elevate the School’s fundraising, increasing dollars to the Annual Fund and membership in the 1748 Planned Giving Society. Rod was recognized as Alumnus of the Year in 1997. After his term on the board, Rod remained involved with the School, organizing class reunions and attending events. Rod’s children decided to dedicate a bench on campus to their father, with the plaque featuring a famous William Penn quote, “The best recreation is to do good.” Rod’s service to WFS certainly illustrates his commitment to doing good. WFS is grateful for all Rod has done in support of the School, and is also thankful for his children’s desire to continue Rod’s generosity.
