Dear Friends, On behalf of the Wilmington Friends School Board of Trustees, I would like to extend my deepest gratitude and most sincere thank you to all that are recognized in this Annual Report on Philanthropy.

WFS received $1,592,976 in capital, endowment, and Annual Fund gifts in the 2016-17 school year – from foundations, corporations, and hundreds of families and individuals that believe in the mission of our School.

We are a better school, and community, because of your commitment and generosity.

One of the exciting aspects of this incredible level of giving is that we have once again made history, as the only day school in Delaware to surpass the $1 Million mark in Annual Giving. As a result of your tremendous giving, and the efforts of the many that helped make it happen, Wilmington Friends School is able to invest in current, and future, faculty and staff development, while continuing to provide the academic and extracurricular programs that enable our students to excel in every aspect of their lives. Your generous giving will provide many opportunities in this coming year for our students, faculty, and staff to let their lives speak.

The Quaker testimonies of Simplicity, Peace, Integrity, Community, Equality, and Stewardship are the principles by which WFS is guided and that set our School, and community, apart. Our ability to continually learn, create, innovate, and enhance our programs and School are also defining characteristics that set us apart. Your gifts to WFS make our commitment to the testimonies, and our leadership in education, possible. I continue to be inspired by, and fortunate to be a part of the WFS community.

Smith McMillan 21st Annual 5K Saturday, October 22, 2016

A high energy start to Homecoming Saturday, this race is held in memory of Jonathan Bacon Smith ’83 and Wendy Smith McMillan ’77 and supports financial aid at Friends. Despite the cold, rain and wind, we had over 200 registrants for the race and raised over $7,000!

Spring Fling

Saturday, May 20, 2017 Spring Fling was held on the middle/upper school campus on Saturday, May 20th.

Hundreds of Friends attended and enjoyed the unique culinary creations by Plum Pit Food Truck; cupcakes from The Sweetest Rose’s Sweets Mobile; music by Guest Alumni DJ Ciara Graves ’16; and Kids Korner youth games hosted by upper school QUEST Term students.

The Kids Korner portion of the event raised approximately $1,200, all of which was donated to the DREAM Project, a non-profit organization that provides quality education to more than 7,000 children in the Dominican Republic.

This summer, twenty WFS students traveled to the D.R. to work with the DREAM team. They helped children and youth realize their full potential through transformative education programs that combat the effects of poverty.

We would like to thank our event sponsors, Home & School, the Office of Admissions, and our volunteers, without whom this event would have never happened; and to all of those who attended and supported this wonderful day for the Friends community.

Quaker Quiz Night

Saturday, March 4, 2017 Thank you to everyone who participated in our inaugural Quaker Quiz Night in March! We had close to 250 people in attendance and raised almost $25,000 to support Financial Aid at WFS. We are especially grateful for the hard working Quaker Quiz Night Committee members, the numerous restaurants, shops and other businesses that donated to the twenty-five bonus baskets, and Mike Anderson ’08 from Oyster Bay Brewery for bringing his micro-brew. Without your contributions, the success of the event would never have been possible.

SENIOR FUND We are grateful for the family and friends of the Class of 2017 who continued the tradition of the Senior Fund at Friends. 83% of Senior Families gave over $55,460 in honor of the Class of 2017 and the faculty who inspired them. Wills Passmore ’45* A Transformational Donor For Wills Passmore ’45, his Friends connections run deep. In addition to being an alumnus and regular attender of reunions and other School events, his aunt, Mary Passmore, was a teacher at WFS; his wife, Joanne, served on the Board of Friends; and his three daughters – Susan ’72, Judy ’75, and Cynthia ’81 - all graduated from Friends. Wills believed strongly in the value of a Friends education as a foundation for a life of responsibility and selfless contribution to community and the public good. A staunch supporter of the School, Wills generously included a bequest to the Savery Science Fund in his Will.

He believed science education to be critical to preserve the land and improve the future for generations to come. Wilmington Friends School would like to publicly acknowledge that gift and the many that preceded it from this modest alum.

Like all planned gifts, Wills’ bequest is a part of the soul of Wilmington Friends, and will support the School in perpetuity.

Remembering Duane Nash: The Class of 1966 Endowment Fund

Many Wilmington Friends School alumni actively support their alma mater, and members of the Class of 1966 are an inspiring example of this commitment. While celebrating their 50th reunion in the fall, classmates had an opportunity to look back on the good times they had at Friends, and to reconnect with one another. Amidst the rekindling of friendships and reminiscing about great events, the Class of 1966 set a goal of establishing an endowment fund as a way to give back to the School that meant so much to them.

Led by classmates David Smith and Ben Osbun, the Class of ’66 Gift Committee began asking for gifts in October 2016 and, by February 2017, the class had surpassed its goal of $66,000, a number which was set in honor of their graduation year. When asked what motivated him to help lead this effort, Ben responded, “Friends gave me a very meaningful education. I had very enjoyable experiences at Friends, and so did both of my children, and I want to help preserve this for future students.” David added, “What Friends School gave to me is the ability to end up where I am today. I got a great education at Friends, met wonderful people, and got lots of help when I needed it.”

David and Ben both agreed that the incredible faculty and staff were what made their Friends experience so special. They recounted the supportive and close-knit community of teachers, coaches, and administrators. As a testament to this, the class decided to direct their fund to faculty support, and to name the fund in memory of Duane Nash, a former math teacher at Friends who had multiple sclerosis and used a wheelchair. As David recalled, “He never let his multiple sclerosis stop him. His door was always open for anyone who needed help with anything.”

The Class of 1966 hopes their endowment fund will help the School continue to attract and retain the best and brightest faculty. Like all endowment funds, their class fund will support the School in perpetuity, having a lasting impact at Friends.

This past year, the Friends community lost a beloved former faculty member, Nona Smolko. Meredith Graves has been involved with Wilmington Friends School for an extended period of time. Both of her children, Will Graves ’10 and Sarah Graves Scoville ’05, attended Friends School, and Meredith herself was always very involved in school happenings. You could always catch Meredith cheering on her children on the many sports fields, tapping her foot to the rhythm of the jazz band, applauding her children during plays and musicals, and much more.

Meredith continues to give back to the School today, long after her children have both graduated, through her philanthropy.

When asked why she does so, Meredith responded by explaining the significant impact the school had on her and her children. Meredith continued by saying, “Wilmington Friends gave my children this great, multicultural and supportive education, and I want to help to preserve this opportunity for generations of students to come.”

The supportive atmosphere, teachers, and the incorporation of Quaker values are just some of the aspects of Friends that motivate Meredith to give. Meredith said that Friends School “really prompted my children to begin the lifelong journey of understanding who they are as an individual, and as a person.” To Meredith, this notion definitely encouraged the individual growth of her children, and really encouraged them to put their best foot forward. Meredith feels that it is incredibly important to support this atmosphere.

When asked what specific purpose she would like her philanthropy to serve, Meredith said she would like to help prospective students come to Friends so they can experience the same great education and environment as her own children. In addition to this, one of Meredith’s goals for her recently established endowment gift is to allow students to continue to fully participate at Friends during a difficult time for them and their family. Meredith also said she would like to support teacher development. As Meredith puts it, “the teachers are a core part of what makes the Friends School education so special.” Wilmington Friends School is grateful to Meredith and her family for their generosity in establishing the Sara and Will Graves Family Fund, as well as her generous challenge gift to the Annual Fund this year, which generated an additional $10,000 in Annual Fund gifts from other Parents of Alumni like her.
