REPORT ON PHILANTHROPY 2018-2019
Celebrating our Community Dear Friends, Thank you for your generous support of Wilmington Friends School this past year. I am so grateful to be a part of such a thoughtful and caring community. The past school year included a remarkable fall sports season, where each of our teams qualified for post-season play. In the spring, we held a successful service project, which brought together more than 150 members of our community to assemble over 20,000 meals that were donated to several local food pantries. In between, we celebrated the many accomplishments of our students in the classroom, on our athletic fields, and on the stage. The perfect end to this school year took place on a beautiful June evening, when we came together to celebrate the Class of 2019; their joyous and supportive spirit was evident throughout their beautiful graduation ceremony. As many of you know, this past year, we intentionally examined the Quaker testimony of community at WFS. We reflected upon how it is lived at our school, and identified new ways to strengthen our sense of community. There are many ways that community is embodied at Friends and you, our generous community of donors, are at the heart of it all. Those of you who give so generously to our school each year are part of our amazing community of donors who keep WFS continuously evolving and strong. This past year, you helped us grow the WFS endowment, which enables our school leaders to be strategic and nimble in addressing the changing needs of our faculty, students, and families. You also helped us maintain a strong tradition of Annual Fund support, which enriches almost every aspect of learning and teaching at Friends.
We would like to thank the individuals listed below for your service to the WFS community. We could not have accomplished what we did without your hard work. Annual Fund Leadership Committee: Lori Captain, co-chair Meg Gehret Erskine ’83, co-chair Tara Agne Chick Altmaier ’51 Christine DiGuglielmo Russell Endo Amanda Friz Rachel Gaskell Susan Kelley Chris Lee ’82 Brian Mand ’90 Raymond Osbun ’71 Susan Terranova David & Debbie Ross Meredith Graves Rotko Walter Smith ’62
Jones House Interns and Volunteers: Maxine Chou ’21 Deborah S. Layton Shelly Mand Deborah G. Mellor Courtney Thomson ’20 Henry Wieman ’21
Beyond financial support, members of our community are also generous with their time and their talents. I’d like to recognize and thank the many donors and volunteers who are listed throughout this Annual Report. I am grateful to each of you for your belief in our mission, and for the selfless work you do to help our Wilmington Friends School community thrive. With deep appreciation and in friendship,
Susan Kelley Chair, Board of Trustees Wilmington Friends School

Laura Kirk Kurz ’97, Special Events Coordinator Laura joined the Alumni/Development team at WFS in January 2019 when she and her family moved back to the Wilmington area. Joining her at WFS are her two children, Clara, a third grader, and Charlie, a fifth grader. Prior to working at WFS, Laura was the Director of Advancement at Radcliffe Creek School in Chestertown, Maryland. Her favorite thing about being back is reconnecting with her hometown and her friends in the area.
Montgomery “Monty” Harris, Director of Capital and Endowment Giving Monty joined the Alumni/Development team at WFS in October 2018 after 17 years working in development at The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania. REPORT ON PHILANTHROPY 2018-2019
Preserving the Spirit of Friends For Nick Ellis ’68, returning to Wilmington for his 50th reunion last fall, after a long time away from the area, was a powerful experience. It was a homecoming in the truest sense of the word for Nick, and it left him impressed with all of the progress the Classmate Mary Beth Watson Smith School has made through at their 50th Reunion this past Fall. the years. “I had not been back to the School in decades, and when I returned for my 50th reunion, I was impressed by many things,” he recounted. “I was impressed by the increased diversity at the School. I was impressed by the first-rate facilities and the technology in the classrooms. And I was impressed to see that our core Quaker values still remain after all of these years.” Around the time of his class’s 50th reunion, there was a big political battle brewing over a Supreme Court nomination, and Nick recalls how gratified he was to learn about how the faculty and students handled such a challenging, divisive issue. “As I learned during a conversation with (Head of School) Ken, every voice was given the chance to be heard,” he said. “Diversity of thought is critical to constructive dialog, and so I was really pleased to hear that.” The experiences of Homecoming weekend rekindled many fond memories and reaffirmed his appreciation for his Friends education, and for the teachers and coaches who had an impact on his life. One that stands out to Nick is Coach Bob Tattersall. “Coach T taught us a lot of lessons about life, lessons we didn’t even
realize we were learning at the time,” he remembered. “We learned how to win graciously, and how to lose graciously; and we learned the importance of teamwork, something that is so important in the business world, and something that has helped me in my professional life.” When asked to encapsulate Friends, Nick summoned words like gratitude, humility, and community. “As graduates of Friends, we all had an incredible head start, and I believe we were all aware of how fortunate we were to have that head start,” he said. “We were poised for success, but also understood the responsibility we have to make a difference in the world.” To commemorate his reunion experience and the impact of his time spent as a student at Friends, Nick decided to join the 1748 Planned Giving Society by making a generous bequest to the School. “I made this commitment in the hopes that Friends will continue to push boundaries and be innovative while remaining true to the Quaker principles that make this School so special,” he remarked. Like all legacy gifts, Nick’s bequest is part of the soul of Wilmington Friends, providing support for the School in perpetuity. We’re grateful to Nick for this incredible commitment to the School, and for the many ways his gift will impact learning and teaching at Friends. Planned gifts can inspire future generations of leaders, critical thinkers, and doers who go out into the world and let their lives speak. After Jane passed away in 2018, an inspiring service celebrating her life took place at the Wilmington Friends Lower School Meeting Room on Saturday, September 22nd, 2018. Following the service, Jane’s husband, Chad Stone, made a generous gift to establish a fund in Jane’s memory, with additional funds provided by their nephew Bill Stone and his wife Alison, whose desire to honor their Aunt Jane inspired the idea. The purpose of the newly established Jane Goldberg Fund for Kindergarten Financial Aid is to support diversity in our kindergarten program by providing financial aid funds for kindergarten families with demonstrated need.
Below is a transcript of a Q&A between Chad Stone and WFS Director of Development Chad O’Kane: Could you tell me about Jane’s career, her hobbies, service to other organizations, and passions outside of teaching? Jane’s passion turned out to be teaching and early childhood education, but she didn’t know that coming out of college. Her first job was as a welfare caseworker in Philadelphia, but she subsequently fell in love with working with young children at Trinity Cooperative Day Nursery in Swarthmore. Serendipitously, in 1987 she was asked to teach kindergarten at Friends, and the rest is history. Throughout her career, Jane devoured books on early childhood education and kept up with the latest research. When she wasn’t doing lesson plans, creating the “tricky papers” that her students started out with each morning, and writing informative, insightful, and clever newsletters for parents and narrative report cards that individualized each child, Jane liked to read books (nonfiction and fiction) and listen to music (classical and jazz for the most part, but her tastes were eclectic). She also enjoyed getting away to relax in coastal Maine where her brother Scott lived for years and where we eventually acquired adjacent property.
When thinking about how to honor Jane’s legacy, what was it about Friends that made you want to have such a big impact here, as opposed to another institution or organization where she either attended or worked? Friends was the institution to which Jane devoted the bulk of her working years. I could see the work that she put in, and because I got to hear stories of the classroom, saw her preparation, and read drafts of her newsletters, I was pleased but not surprised at the reputation she earned. When my nephew Bill and his wife Alison expressed a desire to honor their Aunt Jane with a named scholarship for kindergarten, it seemed to me like the perfect way to honor her legacy.
What do you hope this new fund will accomplish at Friends? Jane’s commitment to the values of diversity, equity, and inclusion infused her teaching and informed her vision of the importance of diversity in the WFS student population. My hope for the new fund is that it will further the goal of supporting diversity in the kindergarten program by providing financial aid funds for families with demonstrated need.
From your perspective, what was so special about her experience at WFS—how did her experience teaching in a Quaker school shape her?
Looking ahead five years from now, what would you consider a success story with the Jane Goldberg Fund for Kindergarten Financial Aid?
The opportunities, challenges, and high standards, yet freedom from excessive bureaucracy, afforded by an independent school—especially a Quaker school like Friends—was the right environment for Jane to develop as a teacher. She was allowed to thrive at what she did best, which was challenging young minds and instilling a love of learning in the classroom, and she was tolerated with kindness when she didn’t always get forms in on deadline.
A success story five years from now would be the recognition of the Jane Goldberg Fund for Kindergarten Financial Aid as an important and ongoing contributor to a thriving diversity in the school generally, and the kindergarten program particularly.
