REPORT ON PHILANTHROPY 2019-2020

Thank You For Your Stewardship Dear Friends, This past year will be remembered for the new challenges and uncertainty brought to our world, and for how we met these challenges with uncompromising positivity and exceptional leadership. Together, we embarked on a journey to reimagine our Lower School; we executed a relatively seamless transition to remote learning; and now we are planning for an upcoming school year that promises to be unlike any other in our history. Although a good part of our second semester was completed away from our physical campus, our students, faculty, and staff maintained an exceptional level of academic education and engagement. It was encouraging to witness our students continue to develop critical learning skills as well as moral, emotional, and character development skills consistent with our Quaker values. As our faculty and staff prepare thoughtfully for whatever the fall may bring, I extend the gratitude of the entire Board of Trustees for their exceptional resilience and care. We also thank you, our amazing school community, for your stewardship that provided resources and capabilities, like our one-to-one laptop program, that allowed for a smooth transition to remote learning. It was inspiring to see your continued generosity to, and care for, Wilmington Friends School in the midst of much disruption and hardship for many. Because of you, we continue to progress even in the face of uncertainty and unprecedented challenges.

We would like to recognize the individuals listed below for their service to the WFS community. Whether you helped raise money for the Annual Fund, or assisted with work in the Alumni/Development Office, you contributed to our success this school year. Thank you. Chick Altmaier ’51 Melissa Bilek Lori Captain Meg Gehret Erskine ’83 Catherine Strickler Gaul ’95 Stacy Gatti Tina Hannagan and Kurt Clawson Olivia Ivins ’20 Linda Kushner Deborah S. Layton Sarah Schenck Maheshwari ’91 Shelly Mand Deborah G. Mellor Alyssa Nathan ’17 Fred Pardee ’52 Walter Smith ’62 Martha Poorman Tschantz ’85 Kristine and David Tuttleman

As we look forward to next year, we will continue to plan for the unknown and to seek every opportunity to improve. As the world changes, so must we. Your financial support—whether you are a True Blue donor or you have given for the very first time this year—allows us to pursue the strategic opportunities that will frame our future. Thank you again to every person listed in this report. Your gifts are what sustain us in difficult times and help us thrive in good times. Please know that, as fiduciaries of the School, the board holds your trust in us with great care as we strive to meet the aspirations of what a Wilmington Friends School education should and can be in the 21st Century. In friendship, Susan Kelley Chair, Board of Trustees Wilmington Friends School

CORPORATE PARTNERS Over the last ten years, Wilmington Friends School has received a tremendous amount of support from local companies and small businesses who have sponsored campus events. This speaks volumes about the community support of our school and our mission. These sponsorship funds have been used in a variety of ways—from financial aid and professional development for faculty, to providing the necessary tools to educate our students. Each of these sponsoring organizations has truly made a difference at Friends. During the 2019-2020 school year, WFS started a more formal Corporate Partnership Program and we would like to thank these companies for joining us in our inaugural year of this program. If you are interested in joining the program for the 2020-2021 school year, please contact the Development Office.

REPORT ON PHILANTHROPY 2019-2020

OUR THANKS! “There are so many teachers and staff members at Wilmington Friends who have made our children’s learning experience rigorously strong, culturally informed and always thought-provoking.”

* “Thank you to all of the wonderful teachers for your dedication and patience through these tough times.”

*

“The entire faculty and staff at Friends deserve a huge thank you, especially this year, for all of the new challenges and difficulties they’ve helped our children through. Thank you so much!”

*

“In honor of the awesome teachers, their dedication and kindness in this difficult time.”

*

“Thank you for your commitment & dedication to mentoring our son to become a better person. We appreciate you! WFS Staff is amazing!”

*

“Thank you so much for your dedication! I am so grateful to the many faculty and staff who contributed to my daughter’s growth during the past 14 years.”

These words of appreciation are a small sample of the notes which accompanied Annual Fund gifts from parents, guardians and grandparents in honor of Faculty & Staff this spring. They provided a much needed boost to our faculty and staff who worked tirelessly to adapt their lessons to fit a new WFS Remote Learning platform and support our students who were adapting to a new way of learning. Our Thanks

REPORT ON PHILANTHROPY 2019-2020

What is a Legacy? “It’s planting seeds in a garden you’ll never get to see.” These words from the musical Hamilton remind us that the work of building something enduring and worthwhile never ends, and it extends beyond our individual lifetimes. At Wilmington Friends School, we do the work, but we don’t always get to see the results. Our school has been here since 1748, before the nation was founded. It has been nurtured and sustained by the vision and generosity of many good people over the generations including those who are listed in this Report on Philanthropy. Like the nation, we have a lot more work to do, but it’s work that is worth doing. That’s what legacies are all about, they are the fruit of a life’s work. We don’t give up on the dream. We keep planting seeds, even though we may never get to see the garden fully grown.

What will your legacy look like? Wilmington Friends School welcomes the following new members of the 1748 Society. Thank you for choosing to make Wilmington Friends School part of your legacy. Anonymous (2)
