Alumni/Development Events REPORT ON PHILANTHROPY 2021-2022 II Thank You

During our commencement ceremony in June, I reflected with the WFS Class of 2022 about taking adventures. In high school, I read a book which shaped my outlook on life; The Hobbit. Bilbo Baggins’ adventure had a lasting impact on my imagination. With much trepidation, he left his comfortable home for an adventure. He took a chance, and it changed his life. That book dared me to take adventures of my own.

The donors listed in these pages have made those experiences possible. Whether through an endowment or legacy gift, giving in honor of faculty and staff during Teacher Appreciation Week, or helping unlock the $15,000 challenge gifts during our Be Bold for Blue day of giving, your generosity has had a direct impact on each and every one of our students, faculty, and staff. You provide them a foundation of support so that they can be adventurous and take chances. You have enabled us to continue investing in the next generation of leaders, and have helped to strengthen our community.

Thank You For Your Stewardship

They let their passions lead them, and tried new things. They took chances with relationships, pushed boundaries, and traveled to new and exciting places. They went outside their comfort zones and learned from their failures.

On behalf of the Wilmington Friends School Board of Trustees, I would like to extend my sincerest thanks to everyone who is recognized in the following Report on Philanthropy. This past year, we focused on the Quaker testimony of Peace in our school curriculum and communications. The time, talent, and financial resources that you so generously give year after year provide the School a solid foundation of support that allows us to focus our energies on this testimony.

Dear Friends,

Thank you again for your support, and I can’t wait to see what next year holds for Wilmington Friends!

The Friends community has been on an adventure of its own this year. As faculty and staff navigated changing pandemicrelated restrictions and consistently negative news headlines, students bravely showed their adventurous spirit through student-led activism, creativity in the classroom, and winning a state championship. They pushed a message of peace within our community and our world.

Denise Chapman

On Saturday, April 9, 2022, nearly 200 members of the WFS community gathered together (for the first time since 2020) to test their trivia knowledge and catch up with friends. This year, thanks to your generosity, we were able to raise over $10,000. Your support helped our faculty and staff reimagine their roles and classes to continue offering our strong program, rooted in Quaker values. Congrats to Meredith Jones ’00, Keith Law, Danielle Litterelle, Todd Litterelle, Jenks Whittenburg, Jennifer Hederman, and Stella Mask on their big win!

The Connolly Family

For the first time since 2019, WFS was able to return to our traditional Smith McMillan 5K Run/Walk on campus. There were over 180 racers, including WFS alumni, students, faculty and staff, families, and friends. This was an extra-special occasion as we marked 25 years of joining together in Alapocas to raise money for the Smith McMillan Financial Aid Endowment Fund at Friends. This year, we are pleased to report, this event raised just under $6,000! Thank you to committee clerks Katy Connolly and Amanda Singleton Hay ’95, and to the rest of our committee members for their commitment and support.

Congratulations to the Class of 2022! Rebounding from COVID-19 restrictions, the Senior Fund Committee achieved a first-ever fundraising milestone for this effort: reaching 100% participation from graduating senior families. This means that every family who had a graduating senior at Friends this year made a donation to the School! We are especially grateful to the Senior Fund committee and Committee Co-clerks Janine Saber and Oliver Yeh ’86 who helped raise over $69,598 for the WFS Annual Fund. The efforts by the committee honor the class of 2022 and their achievements at Wilmington Friends.

When asked how Quaker education has influenced his life, Fred replied, “The Quaker testimonies to which I was introduced as a student made a lasting impact in my life and provided a moral compass for me.”

REPORT ON PHILANTHROPY 2021-2022 IX

We welcome the following community members who have included Wilmington Friends School in their estate plans during 2021-2022: Cassandra and Ken Aldridge William P. Bickley

Why Friends?

Fred, who clerked the Board of Trustees in the 1980’s, has served as Class Agent and strives to sustain the record set by Bill Quillen ’52 of 100% participation in the Annual Fund.

Laura and Fred Pardee ’52 have been engaged with the Friends community for decades. They keep in close contact with Fred’s class and attend class reunions on campus, in Florida, and recently in Maine. Laura taught French at Friends in the early 70’s. They are the proud parents of Michael ’78 and Martha ’79.

Nancy* and Arthur Diver ’47* Montgomery Harris

Laura and Fred have joined the 1748 Society by including the School in their estate plans. “We wanted to do our part towards ensuring the school’s leadership among peers in tuition aid, faculty development opportunities, and maintenance of the campus,” Fred said.

As a student, he found the academics at Friends challenging, and excellent preparation for college. In fact, Fred graduated from Princeton with a B.S. degree in Chemical Engineering. After serving as a jet pilot in the Air Force, he returned to Princeton for an M.S. in Chemical Engineering.

We are grateful to the Pardees for their generous commitment as well as their continuous engagement with our community. Bequests and other planned gifts help build our endowment, which ensures our long-term viability. For more information, please contact Monty Harris, Director of Capital and Endowment Giving, at 302.576.2985 or mharris@wilmingtonfriends.org.

Thank you for choosing to make the School part of your legacy

Endowment giving helps ensure that Wilmington Friends School is able to fulfil its mission for centuries to come. We are grateful for the alumni, faculty, staff and parents who have made generous investments in key strategic areas, as well as, those who made gifts that the school can use whereever there is a need.

On April 8, Friends celebrated our first ever Be Bold for Blue Giving Day challenge. Thanks to three $5,000 matching gifts from the Home & School Association, Kristine and David Tuttleman, an anonymous donor, and a strong show of support from 366 donors, over $100,000 was raised in support of Friends! This represents the most donations that Friends has ever recieved in a single day. Thank you to all who participated in this Day of Giving!

As a thank you for their commitment to WFS, all True Blue Society members will be invited to special events, highlighted in the Annual Report on Philanthropy, and receive special perks throughout the year. In addition, the first 100 donors who sign up to give at least $5/month or $60/annually through a recurring donation will receive a limited-edition square magnet! You can set up a recurring donation easily by visiting wilmingtonfriends.org/donate or by scanning the QR code below.

True Blue donors are the bedrock of the Annual Fund at Wilmington Friends School. Starting this year, we are excited to announce a renewed True Blue society! Now, any donor who has given a gift for 10 years or more consecutively, or is set up on a recurring donation cycle will be eligible for True Blue status.

Thank you to the following new members who have earned True Blue status after making a gift in each of the past ten years:
