Report on Philanthropy
REPORT ON PHILANTHROPY 2022-2023
Thank You For Your Stewardship Friends, On behalf of the Wilmington Friends School Board of Trustees, I would like to extend my sincerest thanks to everyone who is recognized in the following Report on Philanthropy. As I travel along the journey of life, I have employed a few compass points to navigate along the way. One of these is “count your blessings.” During our commencement ceremony in June, I reflected on this topic with the WFS Class of 2023. While it is easy to envy the good fortunes of others, we all have misfortunes with which we must contend. Everybody goes through highs and lows in their lives. Everyone has a burden. What matters is how one plays the cards they were dealt. I encouraged them to remember that just being here is the best blessing of all. Planet Earth won the planetary power ball when it formed at the perfect distance from the sun. Every one of us won the lottery the moment we were conceived. We are surrounded by what mother nature and our fellow human beings have created in beauty, art, music, and technology. Blessings also come in the form of loved ones, friends, teachers, coaches, groups, and organizations that care for you. They want to make your life better, and you make them better by being here. Last academic year, we focused on the Quaker testimony of Simplicity. This Report on Philanthropy is an opportunity for us to pause and appreciate you: our donors, who provide many blessings. Those listed in these pages are themselves a blessing to our Friends community. Whether through an endowment or legacy gift, giving in honor of faculty and staff during Teacher Appreciation Week, or helping unlock the $30,000 challenge gifts during our Be Bold for Blue day of giving, donors have a direct impact on each and every one of our students, faculty, and staff. Friends donors provide our community a strong foundation, allowing us to be adventurous and take chances, the ultimate blessing. You enable us to continue investing in the next generation of leaders and have helped to strengthen our community. I reminded the graduating class to do an occasional audit as they go through life and count all the blessings that they have. In the end, more often than not, I find what we do have far outweighs what we don’t have. Thank you again for your continued support of the Friends community. I can’t wait to see what next year holds for our school! In Friendship,
David Tennent Clerk, Board of Trustees Wilmington Friends School

Smith McMillan Annual 5K Saturday, October 15, 2022
In October 2022, the WFS community once again rallied together for the much-anticipated Smith McMillan 5K Run/ Walk. Over 150 enthusiastic participants, including alumni, students, faculty, staff, and families, took to our campus trails, reinforcing the enduring spirit of this cherished tradition. The event served as a powerful reminder of the importance of our collective efforts towards supporting the Smith McMillan Financial Aid Endowment Fund at Friends. We successfully raised over $6,200, a contribution that will greatly aid our mission of providing financial support to deserving students. The success of the event would not have been possible without the meticulous planning and dedication of our committee clerk, Katy Connolly, and the entire committee. Their hard work ensured a seamless event, creating an enjoyable and meaningful experience for all participants.

Quaker Game Night Saturday, March 4, 2023
On Saturday, March 4, 2023, the reimagined Quaker Game Night brought together 185 participants from the WFS community for an evening filled with fun, camaraderie, and friendly competition. In addition to the much-loved trivia portion, we expanded our game repertoire, introducing Bingo, ‘Who Wants to Be a Millionaire,’ a yes/no game, and ‘Family Feud.’ These new additions were met with an enthusiastic response and made the evening even more engaging. Through the support of our community, and generosity of our sponsors, we successfully raised over $8,500, funds that continue to support our faculty to deliver high-quality educational experiences deeply anchored in Quaker principles. We express our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who contributed, enabling us to uphold our commitment to innovative, values-centered education. We also extend our deepest thanks to our co-clerks Karen Legum and Amanda Singleton Hay ’95 and the entire committee whose relentless dedication made the event a resounding success. The passion, creativity, and hard work they brought to the table was instrumental in making Quaker Game Night a memorable occasion for everyone involved.

REPORT ON PHILANTHROPY 2022-2023
Why Friends? Faye Paul Teller ’03 remembers participating with the 250th Anniversary Committee while in Middle School at Friends. “I remember being so excited about creating a time capsule and being part of the long history of the school,” she said. As a testament to her School pride, Faye is now a member of the 275th Anniversary Committee for alumni engagement. Today, Faye is mother to a three-year-old and practices law as a trial lawyer and Partner with Munger, Tolles & Olson in Los Angeles. Faye reflects on her Friends experiences regularly and remains in close contact with her classmates. “The lessons around Quaker values from Mr. Bernard, especially around the importance of service to the community, have really stuck with me,” she shared. For 17 consecutive years, Faye and her husband have supported the Friends Annual Fund. In addition to being True Blue donors, they contribute at the Meeting Circle level. “I think of my donation to the school as a tangible symbol of how much I appreciate what Friends did for me and how it shaped my life since I graduated. I have tried to give every year, even if it is not very much, as a way to show my gratitude for that,” she said. In 2016, the Tellers established a Donor Advised Fund (DAF) as part of their commitment to donating a certain percentage of their earnings every year. The DAF enables them to make sure they set aside the amount they want to spend on charitable contributions each year, while at the same time providing the time and flexibility to decide how to dedicate their philanthropy. We are grateful to the Tellers for their generous and consistent support. For more information on ways to support Wilmington Friends, please contact Monty Harris, Director of Capital and Endowment Giving, at 302.576.2985 or mharris@wilmingtonfriends.org.

Be Bold For Blue
On March 31, Friends celebrated our 2nd Annual Be Bold for Blue Giving Day challenge. Thanks to Karen and Alan Krigstein ’70; Mati and Chris Buccini ’90; parents Kristine and David Tuttleman; and an anonymous donor who donated the challenge gifts that helped to inspire a tremendous response from more than 370 supporters, helping raise over $100,000 in support of Friends! This year, Middle and Upper School students joined in on the fun by holding a penny drive to support the Giving Day Challenge. The two grades with the highest points won Krispy Kreme donuts during their homeroom. Congrats to the 8th and 9th grades for their win!
Megan Hegenbarth, middle school science and mathematics teacher, filling the 6th grade bucket with coins while students look on, during the final day of the penny drive.
Welcoming a New Class of True Blue Donors The True Blue Society is the bedrock of the Annual Fund at Wilmington Friends School, and includes any donor who has given a gift for 10 or more consecutive years or who has established a recurring donation. As a thank you for their commitment to WFS, all True Blue Society members will be invited to special events, will be highlighted in the Annual Report on Philanthropy, and will receive special perks throughout the year. You can set up a recurring donation easily by visiting wilmingtonfriends.org/donate or by scanning the QR code below. Thank you to the following new members who have earned True Blue status by making a gift in each of the past ten years or by setting up a new recurring donation to Friends: Blair Atkins ’17 Jane Atkins and Andy Atkins ’76 Virginia Poole Bainbridge ’63 and David Bainbridge Andrew Baumann ’95 Barbara Butkus ’04 Elana Caplan ’02 Marilyn Lammert and Paul Carlson Joan M.
