Is Your Child Struggling in School?
Below average reading skills, careless errors, poor memory and concentration, reverses letters? If this sounds like your child, we can help.
How Can Our Center Help?
First, we test and diagnose if a child has learning-related vision problems. If such a difficulty exists, a vision therapy program is recommended to meet the child's special needs. Your child will work on specific goals with a certified optometric therapist, under the supervision of a developmental optometrist. The ultimate goal is to allow the individual to perform up to his/her potential in the classroom without unnecessary struggling.
What Do I Need To Do?
If your student is in the 1st grade-college, and is struggling academically, call our Center to set up an initial appointment. When diagnosed early, we can significantly improve and often alleviate the problem entirely. Many insurances help cover the cost of testing.

O
k, so this school year I’m determined to start off on the right foot. Backpacks packed and outfits laid out the night before, regular/reasonable bed times, and healthier afterschool snacks. No more searching for missing homework; no more scrambling for something to wear; no more late nights and bleary-eyed mornings; and no more grazing on junk after school. Tall order?—well, yes. And, for me, healthier afterschool snacks will be the biggest challenge. I’ve turned to writer and mother, Denise Yearian, for some recipes to get me started. How about a peeled banana on a Popsicle stick spread with softened peanut butter and rolled in granola—then frozen overnight? Or a cored apple with a touch of butter, cinnamon, nutmeg and sugar baked for 3 minutes in the microwave? Yum! Find these recipes and more on page 40. Have a recipe you’d like to share? I’d love to hear from you! Go to wilmingtonparent.com and click “Recipe Swap” to submit a kidfriendly recipe. Planning a birthday party in the next few months? Well, we’ve got you covered! Start with “4-3-2-1—Countdown to Birthday Party Fun” to set a timetable for choosing a venue/theme, sending invitations, enlisting helpers, ordering a cake, and more. Plus, you’ll find an article about birthday celebrations and special needs that provides strategies for a successful party, whether you’re the parent of the special needs child or the party hostess. And, last but not least, don’t miss our round-up of the top spots for your child’s birthday party—listings begin on page 24. Best wishes for a great start to the new school year!

ending children off to school is an act of faith. How can you be sure they will learn what they need to know, especially in a world where technology is so important and changes so quickly? Parents want to feel confident that the school they’ve chosen is up to speed, but it’s difficult to be certain, especially when the education your children are getting is so different from the one you remember.
dent uses as well as classroom presentations and assignments. Mobiles can also be used in laboratories, on field trips, in performance spaces and during community service projects. As the Horizon Report puts it, “Mobiles… enable ubiquitous access to information, social networks, tools for learning and productivity and thousands of custom applications.” If you want to turn your own mobile device into an
Six Educational Trends Parents Need to Know About Fortunately, parents now have a crib sheet from the International Society of Technology in Education. Their recently released Horizon Report identifies six technology trends that are reshaping education today, tomorrow and in a few years. Just knowing the jargon for these innovations may give you more insight into what’s happening at your child’s school. Here’s an overview:

Happening Now:
Cloud computing has a dreamy name that makes it sound mysterious. The term actually refers to software you can access even it’s not stored on the device you are using. If you use Facebook, Google Docs, Flickr and many other popular sites, you’ve done cloud computing. Schools are realizing that instead of purchasing expensive software that quickly goes out of date, they can give students better access to a wide variety of up-to-the-minute tools by pointing them toward the cloud. Kerpoof. com, for example, introduces young learners to powerful creativity apps that allow them to tell stories, draw pictures and produce videos that can easily be shared with classmates. At Ilabcentral.org, students can do virtual science experiments using equipment that might be unavailable at their schools. Mobiles are devices that allow computing on the go. Laptops and smartphones qualify, but many educators are especially excited about tablet PC’s including the Apple I-Pad. These devices give students and teachers flexibility in when and how they will use technology. Some high schools now present incoming freshmen with a tablet that will store every book the stu-

educational tool for your child, check out the reviews of educational apps at the International Educational Apps Review (iear.org)
Coming Soon: Game-based learning has come a long way. Early educational games like Math Blaster and Reader Rabbit were dull drill-and-practice exercises that peppered students with right/wrong questions. Now educators are stepping it up a notch with games that simulate complex environments ranging from cells (Immune Attack) to disaster relief (Evoke). Although some teachers aren’t comfortable with the open-ended nature of games, many find that a well-chosen game engages and motivates young learners in ways other instructional methods can’t match. As most parents already know, young people can become deeply immersed in games and, as a result, they master content, sharpen problemsolving skills and, in many cases, develop collaborative strategies that mirror the skills they will need in the workplace. Open content got going a decade ago when MIT put all of its courses online. Now K-12 educators are beginning to see advantages in sharing classroom materials at sites like Thinkfinity. com, a site that includes thousands of free lesson plans, or CK-12, a site that lets teachers customize textbooks by picking and choosing science materials they think will be most effective with their students. Students, too, have access to open content at websites like neoK12.com. Among other things, Open Content makes learning available regardless of a student’s location so it is ideal for students who are home-schooled or unable to attend school because of travel or illness. It also helps students master a new set of essential skills related to finding, evaluating and using new information. Perhaps, most important, it encourages students to take more responsibility for when and how they will learn.
In Three to Five Years:
Learning analytics provides teachers with more precise information about what and how children are learning. Unlike high stakes tests that give an annual snapshot of what a child has mastered, analytic tools allow teachers to evaluate as they go. For example, the School of One program uses data about what children have learned to create customized daily schedules. As a result, each student receives math
www.wilmingtonparent.com
instruction that matches his or her learning style and focuses on what he or she needs to know next. Instead of being swept along into a confusing lesson about how to add mixed numbers, the child who needs extra time to master fractions gets it. Although it has critics who worry that data mining can be misused, Learning Analytics also has passionate supporters who believe it can be used to help both teachers and students improve performance.
Carolina Pediatrics of Wilmington, P.A.
Personal learning environments (PLEs) grow out of the fact that every student learns differently. One child absorbs new ideas by listening. Another instantly grasps anything that is presented in a chart or graph. A third does best with a captioned video. PLE’s encourage students to think about and engage with learning materials that work best for them. The role of teacher changes dramatically because educators function as guides who point to the materials they need. A glimpse into how this works is available in a YouTube video made by a 7th grade student who uses Symbaloo to organize her learning (go.nmc. org/oltyt). Obviously, schools and individual teachers vary enormously in their willingness and ability to adopt these new technologies. Still, knowing about them may help you make sense of what’s happening—or not happening—in your child’s classroom. At the very least, you’ll seem more knowledgeable at the next parent-teacher conference. To learn more about what’s on the horizon, download the entire ISTE report at www. iste.org/learn/horizon-report.aspx. v

age only 5% of babies are still refluxing.
How do I know if my baby is spit- ting up too much? Diagnosing GERD can be quite challenging. Not all babies who spit up have GERD, and not all babies with GERD spit up. Problematic GERD may cause vague symp- toms like nasal congestion, coughing, wheezing, hoarseness, even seizure-like episodes (Sandifer’s syndrome). In severe cases, infants may refuse to eat or fail to gain weight. While babies with GERD may be fussy, studies of irritable infants showed very few of them had GERD. Infants with colic often end up on medicines for GERD, but these medicines have never been proven to help colic symptoms.
What will my child’s doctor want to know?
By Dr. David Hill
O
ur dry cleaner was thrilled every time we had a new baby. For six months he could count on us dropping off armloads of dresses, shirts and pants, some of them barely out of the plastic before get- ting covered with spit-up. The majority of babies do spit up
As always, we start with a thorough history. You may want to keep a diary of feeds: what kind of feed, how often, how many ounces, and volume and force of vomiting are all helpful details. Blood in the vomit or stool, bile in the vomit, and projectile vom- iting all suggest potentially serious causes of vomiting other than GERD. The physical exam is also important, starting with growth curves. A low weight or an unusually large or small head circumference can suggest serious disease. The exam may reveal fever, wheezing, an abdominal mass, or signs of neurologic disease.
Can you see GERD on an X-ray? There are several diagnostic studies available, none of them perfect. The simplest is an “upper GI,” where the infant swallows formula mixed with a contrast medium like barium. X-rays then show where the formu-
EGD is especially useful when a biopsy of the esophagus is needed.
How is GERD treated? When the history and physical exam suggest a diagnosis of GERD we often start with lifestyle modifications. Cigarette smoke causes GERD in both infants and adults, so any tobacco exposure must be eliminated. About 40% of infants with GERD are allergic to the cow’s milk protein in formulas (which may be why breastfed infants have less GERD). Half of these babies will also be allergic to soy protein, so a two-week trial of a hydrolyzed protein for- mula like Alimentum or Nutramigen is worth a try. Babies who are taking large, infrequent feeds may be encouraged to eat smaller vol- umes more often. Adding rice cereal to the formula (1 tbsp per ounce of formula) gets the same calories in a smaller volume and has been shown to reduce regurgitation and crying. It would seem that sitting babies up rather than lying them on their backs would help, but X-rays show just the opposite: babies who are sitting or semi-supine are more likely to reflux. Reflux is least like- ly when a baby is lying face down, but this puts babies at much higher risk for sudden infant death, so we do not routinely rec- ommend this position.
What medications help GERD? We try medications from three classes. Histamine-2 receptor antagonists (H2RAs) include ranitidine, famotidine, nizatidine, and cimetidine. These medicines reduce acid secretions in the stomach and are gen- erally safe and effective. With time they can become less effective. Another class is the proton pump inhibitors (PPIs). The PPIs (omeprazole, esomeprzole, lansoprazole, pantoprazole, rabeprazole) are
Déjà Eew: Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease at least once a day (67% of four-month-olds). So how do we know what’s normal spitting (Gastroesophageal Reflux) and what’s not (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease or GERD)?
Why do babies spit up so much? Compared to an adult, a newborn has a stiff stomach and a short esophagus. When we eat, our stomachs relax and expand to accommodate incoming food. Babies’ stomachs relax much less, so as breastmilk or formula enters the stomach, the pressure rises quickly. The trip from the stomach to the mouth is comparatively shorter in babies, so the chances some gastric contents are going to make it back up (regurgitation) are pretty good. There is a muscular valve between the stomach and the esophagus, the gastroe- sophageal sphincter, whose job it is to keep food down. But under normal conditions the sphincter relaxes from time to time, allowing some food to pass back up into the esophagus (reflux). Reflux begins at birth, with half of zero to threemonth-old babies refluxing. It peaks at four months of age and by ten to twelve months of

la goes, and whether any comes back up into the esophagus. They can also follow the contrast through the small intestine (“small bowel follow-through”). Reflux into the esophagus is a normal event in many infants, so a positive upper GI doesn’t neces- sarily mean a baby has GERD. But the upper GI is very useful for finding other problems that may cause vomiting, such as obstruc- tions of the upper GI tract. Scintigraphy is similar to an upper GI, using a radioactive tracer to follow the course of formula through the esophagus and stomach.
What other tests are there for GERD? A pH probe can be passed through the infant’s nose and down the esophagus to measure whether stomach acid is refluxing. A pH probe can help correlate a baby’s symptoms with his reflux, but it only works if the gastric contents are acidic. Another approach, esophago-gastro-duodenoscopy (EGD or upper endoscopy) must be per- formed by a gastroenterologist. In an EGD the doctor uses a flexible fiberoptic scope to look into the esophagus and stomach for signs of damage from acid reflux.
somewhat more potent at reducing acid secretion and can be used in combination with the H2RAs. A third class of medications, the prokinetics, includes metoclopramide, cis- apride, and erythromycin. In theory these drugs help move food forward through the GI tract, but they have substantial potential side effects and are usually third-line agents.
Isn’t there a surgery for GERD? In the Nissen fundoplication a surgeon wraps part of the stomach up around the esophagus. This surgery is typically reserved for children with severe reflux, usually as a result of premature birth or brain injury.
When will it go away? While GERD can affect older children and adults, the vast majority of infants out- grow their reflux by one year of age. It may make your drycleaner sad, but don’t worry, the couple down the street just had a new baby.. v Dr. David Hill is a board-certified pediatrician with Cape Fear Pediatrics (www.capefearpediatrics.com). He has three children.

Pop quiz! Apollo 17, which launched in December 1972, was the last official manned mission to the moon, but did you know there was one more after that? I didn’t either! Apparently, in December 1974, two American astronauts were sent on a secret mission to the moon funded by the U.S. Department of Defense. What they got was actual footage that reveals exactly why we never went back. Sure, NASA denies its authenticity, but others say it’s the real deal. The truth is out there, and I’m a sucker for sci-fi space movies. This one looks fun, frightening, and mysterious [cue Twilight Zone music].

Book adaptations don’t always translate well to the big screen (no one but me seemed to like Julie & Julia, Eat Pray Love or The Nanny Diaries), but I have high hopes for this one, partly because I adore Greg Kinnear. Based on the book by Allison Pearson, this movie stars Sarah Jessica Parker as Kate Reddy, a Boston-based financial executive who goes home each night to her adoring, recently-downsized architect husband Richard (Kinnear) and their two kids. It’s the same juggling act that Kate’s BFF and fellow working mom Allison (Christina Hendricks) performs on a daily basis. It’s also one that Kate’s child-phobic associate Momo (Olivia Munn) intends to avoid. When Kate scores a major account requiring frequent trips to New York, Richard also wins the new job he’s been hoping for. Things get complicated when Kate’s charming new business associate Jack (Pierce Brosnan) proves a little too tempting to the working mom..

If your kids weren’t born yet when The Lion King hit theaters in 1994, here’s their chance to see the Oscar-winning film on the big screen in 3D. When a young lion prince named Simba (voiced by Jonathan Taylor Thomas) is born in Africa, it leaves his uncle Scar (Jeremy Irons) second in line to the throne. Scar plots with the hyenas to kill King Mufasa (James Earl Jones) and Prince Simba, thus making himself King. But when the King is killed, Scar convinces Simba it was his fault, and the young lion flees the kingdom in shame. After years of exile, he’s persuaded to return home to overthrow the usurper and claim the kingdom as his own, thus completing the Circle of Life. A special two-week theatrical extravaganza kicks off Sept. 16, followed by a Diamond Edition DVD/Blu-ray release on Oct. 4. Hakuna Matata!
world of covert espionage. It’s directed by John Singleton, so expect some edgy violence, but Lautner seems perfect for the role as Nathan Harper, a guy who’s had the uneasy feeling he’s living someone else’s life. When he stumbles upon a picture of himself as a little boy on a missing persons web site, all of Nathan’s darkest fears come true: he realizes his parents are not his own, his life is a lie, and he’s targeted by a team of trained killers, forcing him on the run with the only person he can trust -- his neighbor, Karen (Lily Collins). But the real question is, does Taylor Lautner have some acting chops beyond Twilight?

What could have been a typical family movie about an ocean creature in peril is elevated by a cast that includes Hollywood royalty Morgan Freeman, Ashley Judd and Kris Kristofferson. It’s also based on the true story of a brave dolphin whose tail is severely damaged after being caught in a crab trap. Rescued and transported to a marine hospital, Winter the dolphin is nurtured back to health by a dedicated marine biologist (Harry Connick, Jr.), a brilliant prosthetics doctor (Freeman), and a young boy (Nathan Gamble) whose dedication not only helps Winter, but also scores of people around the world. SPECIAL SECTION: Birthday Party Planer
4-3-2-1…
Countdown to Birthday Party Fun The key to a successful birthday party is planning! Try this checklist for success.
4 weeks before your birthday party:
time and store it in the freezer.
Consider various themes and involve your child in the selection.
Write down a final schedule of activities for the party. This way you can assure that there’s time to eat cake and open gifts.
Create the guest list. Your child’s age +1 is a good guideline for number of guests.
Pick the party date and time (1-1/2 to 2-1/2 hours long is about right).
2-3 days before your birthday party:
If the party will not be at home, book your venue now. (Check out party listings in this issue and www.wilmingtonparent.com—click guides—for ideas).
Buy any remaining food/drink for the party.
3 weeks before your birthday party: Send out invitations with an RSVP. Better yet, save paper and try an evite (www.evite.com). Decide on activities and games if your party is at home or your venue doesn’t provide. Plan your menu/cake. Contact friends or family to help you out on party day.
2 weeks before your birthday party: Order your cake or cupcakes from the bakery if you won’t be baking yourself. Purchase party supplies, if needed. Keep in mind that kids will remember the party—not the perfectly matched tablecloth, napkins and plates—so keep it simple. Pick up thank you notes along with your other party supplies.
1 week before your birthday party: Make any food that can be made ahead of

Confirm an exact guest count. Call anyone who hasn’t RSVP’d. Make sure you have birthday candles and matches on hand. Locate a clipboard and paper. Use one sheet for parent contact information (in the event of an emergency or meltdown) and another to record gifts.
1 day before the birthday party: Make the cake/cupcakes, or pick up from the bakery. Decorate and childproof the party area if you’re entertaining at home. If not, pack up your decorations/party supplies so they’re ready to go on party day. Charge up the camera.
Party Day! Purchase ice for your cooler to keep drinks cold. Prepare any food/drink that could not be made ahead of time. Finish up any decorations at least 30 minutes before guests arrive. Take plenty of pictures/videos to commemorate your child’s special day! v

Birthday Parties with Special Needs SPECIAL SECTION: Birthday Party Planer

aising a child with a special need certainly has its ups and downs. An impending birthday party—either for your child or a peer—can be a roller coaster ride of emotions for all involved. Will anybody show up? Will my child be able to participate? Will my child have a meltdown? These concerns are all natural, but with creative planning and realistic expectations, your child can be part of the fun.
If you are hosting a party for your special needs child…. Let your child guide the planning. What does your child like to do? What is he able to do? If your child doesn’t do well in chaos, he certainly won’t enjoy a house full of kids amped up on cake and ice cream! Consider inviting just one or two children over for a birthday dinner, or go to a concert or sporting event. You can still make it special with just a few guests. If you’re planning a larger gathering (like your child’s entire class), consider a party venue that takes care of the activities and entertainment for you. This way you can better tend to your child and his guests. Be realistic about the time frame. One hour of a great time is better than two hours that feels like ten. If there are rituals or medications built into your schedule, plan your party accordingly.
When your special needs child gets invited…… First, on behalf of parents of children with disabilities everywhere, thank you. Thank you for including our child and know we will do everything we can to help you! Second, thanks again. Third, if you have any questions, just ask, even if you do not know us well. While it’s exciting to receive a party invitation, it’s also stressful. The initial enthusiasm often gets replaced with worry. What if my child has to use the bathroom? What if they serve red dye? What if they do a physical activity? These concerns are normal, so talk with the party host. For example, are there triggers that cause your child to have a seizure or meltdown? Share this information with the host. If it appears that the party isn’t going to be a good fit for your child, offer another time that he can celebrate, or perhaps stop by for a short visit at the beginning or end of the party. After you’ve talked with the host family about your child, you’ll get a better feel for how they will respond to your child. If it would help your child to visit the house before party day, ask if that would be possible. Or, could you arrive early to help your child adjust to the surroundings? Would it be all right if you stayed for a bit? Most parents won’t turn down help for a child’s party, especially if it’s at an alternate location. More than likely, it will make the host feel better having you there for your child. The trick is to make sure you take a backseat to the fun; give your child some room to be with the other children without you hovering. If something does go wrong—and it might—remember your child’s per-

spective. Birthday parties come with a lot of pomp and circumstance. For most children, talking about the big birthday party is exciting and part of the fun. For some children with social disabilities, however, it only increases the anxiety. In this case, down play the party, listing it as one of the errands taking place that day. Go to the gas station, run by the party, stop in. Tell your child you are stopping by the party for fifteen minutes, then it will be time to go to the store. And while you might feel sad that your child only stayed for fifteen minutes, at least he was there at all! If your child does have a meltdown, it can be frustrating for you, and confusing for the birthday child. As much as you might want to convince your child to stay, consider the birthday girl/boy. Is this really what you want them to remember about their party? Cut your losses, thank the host, and stay positive. While your instinct may be to start crying, put that on hold for later. Consider the fact that your child tried to attend the party, which in itself was an accomplishment. If possible, talk with your child about what went wrong, and try to turn the experience into a teachable moment.
In the end… As a host, the biggest mistake you can make is not inviting a special needs child because you aren’t sure how to handle the situation. While the hurt is not intentional, being left out does sting, whether the child has a disability or not. Parents know their kids cannot get invited to everything, but if you find yourself hesitating about inviting a child simply because of a disability, please think again. Consider the classic question— what if it was my child—then do the right thing. v Julia Garstecki is the mother of a special needs child and a freelance writer.

Vision Exams Early eye exams are essential to a child’s development. It has been determined that over 80% of what a child learns in school is presented visually. Since vision problems are often related to poor performance in school, making sure your child has regular eye exams could make a big difference in his academic success. Eye exam costs can range from less than $50 to $100 or more. Just remember that a comprehensive eye exam should always include the following: • Review of personal and family health history and history of eye problems • Evaluation of distance and near vision with an eye chart • Evaluation for the presence of nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism and presbyopia • Evaluation of the eyes’ ability to work together as a team • An eye pressure test and exam of the optic nerve to rule out glaucoma • Examination of the interior of the eyes to rule out other eye problems How often should a person’s eyes be examined? • Birth to 24 months – at 6 months • 2 to 5 years – At age 3 • 6 to 18 years – Before 1st grade and every 2 years after • Ages 18 to 60 – Every 2 years (or as recommended) • Over age 60 – Every year • Children and adults who already wear glasses – annually (or as recommended) Contact a local eye care professional if you have questions! World Heart Day
Annual Physical Exam Emphasizes Prevention
The 2011 World Heart Day is September 29 with the theme “One World, One Home, One Heart.” It has been determined by the World Heart Federation that 80% of premature deaths from heart disease and strokes can be avoided by individuals remaining tobaccofree and maintaining healthy diets and physical activity! Risk of heart disease can often be determined by identifying risk factors: high cholesterol, elevated C-reactive protein, peripheral arterial disease, high glucose, and high blood pressure. There are often no warning signs for stroke. However, if you experience any of these symptoms, you should contact your doctor immediately for medical care: sudden weakness or numbness of the face, arms or legs (particularly on one side of the body), loss of speech, memory loss, dimness or loss of vision in one eye, double-vision, severe/ acute headache, or dizziness (loss of balance). Visit https://secure.lifelinescreening.com to find upcoming screening dates in Wilmington and surrounding areas.
Whether you consider an annual physical exam a form of reassurance or a way to catch health problems before they become serious, it is good practice to include one in your yearly routine. Just remember, there are no absolutes in a routine physical. Every doctor follows his or her own procedures and will provide all or many of the following aspects of a thorough exam: History – This is your opportunity to mention anything that’s bothering you concerning your health while the doctor asks you questions about your personal and family history. Vital Signs – The doctor or assistant will check blood pressure, heart rate, respiration rate and temperature. Other Exams – The doctor may also include your heart, lungs, head/neck and abdomen in the examination checklist. Specific tests for men and women will also be included in annual exams. Screening Opportunities: After age 20, men and women should have their cholesterol (lipids) checked every five years. At age 40, women should begin having annual mammogram screening for breast cancer (unless advised to do so at an earlier time). At age 50, it is time to be screened for colorectal cancer. Check with your primary care physician to determine if other screenings are recommended for you. Source: www.webmd.com

Back-To-School Safety Tips Make this school year safe and successful by helping your children learn and practice safety rules for walking, biking, or riding in a car or bus to school. WALKING: • Supervise young children • Ensure your child leaves early enough to get to school 10 minutes prior to school starting • Use same route daily (and avoid shortcuts) on public sidewalks and streets • Go straight home after school • Walk to school with other children • Obey traffic signals and pavement markings • Cross at designated crosswalks and trafficcontrolled intersections • Always look both ways before crossing a street • Walk (don’t run) across intersections • Avoid talking to strangers • NEVER get into a vehicle without parent permission (even if you know the person) BIKING: • Check with school principal to make sure bikes are allowed • Wear a helmet • Obey the rules of the road (they are the same for vehicles and bicycles) • Stay on the right-hand side of the road to ride in the same direction as traffic • Know and USE appropriate hand signals • Choose the safest route between home and school

BUS: The school bus is an extension of the school and all school rules and regulations. The student conduct policies are applicable when riding the bus. The principal has authority over students on the bus and at designated bus stops. Authority is delegated to the bus driver for safe operation of the bus. • Do not attempt to ride in a bus unless assigned to it by the principal • Arrive at the bus stop ten minutes before bus pickup • Allow the bus to come to a complete stop (stand on the sidewalk or by curb while waiting) • Cross about 10 feet in front of the bus and watch for traffic • Wait AND board quietly and orderly • Remain seated and keep head and arms inside bus • An adult should wait with the children at the bus stop (take turns before and after school) DRIVING: • Always use child safety seats and safety belts correctly • Arrive early and use the school’s “drop-off and pick-up” zone • Do not double park or make u-turns in front of school • Students should enter and leave the car on its curbside • Pick up children on time so they are not left waiting unattended Visit http://www.nhcs.net for more information.

Assessing your family’s life insurance needs
By Robyn Passante
When it comes to life insurance, there’s only one real mistake a parent can make: Not getting any. “I think people put it off,” says Pam Coover, who handles insurance benefits for clients of the financial firm Gunn Mowery in Camp Hill, PA. “People think they’re going to die when they’re 80, but it doesn’t always work out that way.” As parents we want to meet our child’s every need and prepare them for every obstacle. But some theoretical obstacles — like surviving without us — seem just too difficult to face. According to a 2010 study by the insurance industry group LIMRA, 30 percent of American households don’t have life insurance. And of those 35 million households, 11 million include children under 18. That’s a lot of parents who are risking their children’s future comfort and wellbeing. Life insurance can be hard to justify when you’re pinching pennies just to keep the lights on and food on the table. Insurance premiums can seem like free money for insurance com-

panies, as if it’s not really paying for anything besides peace of mind. But rest assured, it is. And with a little research, you can get the right policy at the right price. Simply put, life insurance is meant to make up for your lost income. A reputable agent can help you figure out exactly how much you need, but there are a few things to keep in mind: 1. Stick with term insurance. The least expensive and most popular option for those with young children is term life insurance. Term insurance provides coverage for a certain period of time, typically until your kids are no longer dependents. When deciding on the length of the term, Coover says to think in terms of when they think their kids will be ready to be on their own. “Sometimes people don’t look far enough into the future,” she said. “They should consider if they plan on sending their kids to college, for instance.” 2. Think of the “what ifs.” When calculating your insurance needs, consider expenses you might not currently have, like childcare and college tuition. 3. Get quotes online. Use the Internet to compare premiums and fees, and to research the ratings of a few companies from whom you’re considering buying insurance. 4. Meet face to face. When you’ve decided on a reputable company and you’re ready to purchase a policy, sit down with an actual agent. They’re trained to calculate every debt and asset, and chances are they’ll ask you questions you hadn’t thought of on your own. 5. Get in shape. There will be a physical exam to determine your “risk class,” so spend a month or so making some changes to improve your health and your chances of a lower premium. Quit smoking, lose weight, lower your cholesterol, and get more sleep. Improving your health can save you thousands and thousands of dollars over the life of your policy (not to mention improve your overall life). 6. Reassess regularly. According to the Insurance Information Institute, up to one-third of all U.S. households don’t update their insurance policies after a new baby is born. Whenever there is a life-changing event — marriage, divorce, new baby, or even an aging parent entering the home — you should revisit your current policy and make any necessary adjustments to keep adequate coverage. “It’s probably not a bad thing to look at your policy every five years or so,” Coover says.v Robyn Passante is a freelance journalist whose mother once allowed her to bust most of her back-to-school budget on a pair of Jordache jeans.

Plan an Eco-Friendly Birthday Bash
going green
Tips for “greening” your child’s next birthday party
By Brandy Metzger
C
hildren’s birthday parties can generate a lot of waste. Plates, cups, forks, napkins, disposable tablecloths, wrapping paper, birthday cards, party decorations and favors can fill up a trashcan quickly! So what can parents do to cut down on the waste and throw a more environmentally friendly birthday party? One simple way to get started is to not send out paper invitations. E-mail is a great way to get the word out about a party. Or, send out an
Decorations for the party can be simple and made from recycled paper or other household items. electronic invitation. There are many free websites (ie: Evite) that offer electronic party invitations. On the invitation make a note that the party will be “green” and ask people to bring unwrapped gifts or no gift at all. When making preparations, survey what you already have at home. In many cases, items you have on hand can be used, rather than buying things that are new and disposable. Plastic cups and plates may already be in your cupboard, so why not use them and simply have a few more dishes to wash at the end of the day? Linens like tablecloths and cloth napkins can be used in place of the disposable kind, and a small laundry basket brought to the site of the party can be used to collect

these after eating. Cutlery can be from your own kitchen as well. If you don’t want the kids to have the stainless steel, you can purchase cornstarch cutlery, which is compostable and biodegradable. Decorations for the party can be simple and made from recycled paper or other household items. An old sheet can be used as a birthday banner that can be decorated by party guests. Kids can also use old newspaper to design their own party hats. Goody bags, typically plastic bags filled with candy and cheap trinkets, are not a necessity at children’s birthday parties. If you feel the need to send each child home with something, have a craft station at the party where guests can create their own treasure to take home. Other ideas include giving each child a small book or art supply as a party favor. A final suggestion is to host a party that gives back to the community. One example is throwing a pet-themed party and asking guests to bring items for a local animal shelter instead of gifts for the birthday child. The birthday boy or girl can then deliver all the donations to the shelter and pet the appreciative pooches!. v Brandy Metzger is a gifted education specialist teaching in New Hanover County. She is also the owner of Green Giggles (www.greengiggles. com), an online store specializing in eco-friendly baby items.

Twice blessed means more joy. Surround yourself with these titles about multiples. The Other Half of My Heart by Sundee T. Frazier (Delacorte). Multiracial heritage plays a focal role in this novel that follows a set of twin girls. Daughters of a black mom and white dad, the Kings move from Washington State to North Carolina to compete in a Miss Black Pearl Preteen Pageant. One twin, Minni, is light skinned and shy, while the other, Keira, appears black and is outgoing. The complexities of being a tween are nothing compared to the absurdities, both funny and painful, of being mixed race. (Ages 9 – 12))

Someone Else’s Twin: The True Story of Babies Switched at Birth by Nancy L. Segal (Prometheus Books). Segal, herself a twin and an expert on twin research, chronicles the story of real identical twins, accidentally separated at birth, with one twin switched for another infant. The consequences impact more than simply family bonds—issues of identity, parenthood, nature and the law are all explored as this horrific mistake is revealed. Healthy & Wholesome Afterschool Snacks
Tips and tricks for nutritious snack ideas By Denise Morrison Yearian
W
hen your children come home from school with rumbling tummies, make snack time nutritious by incorporating the same kinds of foods you’d serve during mealtimes. Check out these seven wholesome, yummy snack suggestions to get you started.
Core Nutrition Wash and core an unpeeled apple and place in a microwave-safe bowl. In the hollowed out center, add ½-teaspoon of butter and sprinkle in cinnamon, nutmeg and sugar. Cover and cook for three minutes until soft. Add 1 tablespoon of chopped nuts or raisins to the core, if desired.
Zesty Chips & Salsa Spray a small, whole-wheat tortilla with olive oil. Add garlic powder, chili powder or another spice then bake at 400 degrees for 4 to 6 minutes. Increase salsa’s texture, taste and nutritional value by tossing in diced tomatoes, avocados, mango or pineapple.
Skewered Fruits & Veggies
Go Bananas! Bananas offer a bunch of options: Blend together a peeled, frozen banana, 2 tablespoons of oats, 1 tablespoon of peanut butter and 1 tablespoon of low-fat milk. Gradually add milk in 1 tablespoon increments, blending after each addition, until the mixture is a smoothie consistency. Another idea is to insert a Popsicle stick into each end of a peeled banana. Soften 2 tablespoons of peanut butter in the microwave. Roll the banana in peanut butter then in rice cereal, granola and/or sunflower seeds. Wrap in plastic and freeze 8 hours or overnight. Or slice a banana in half lengthwise, spread one tablespoon of peanut butter on one half then sprinkle with granola. Place the remaining banana over it; eat and enjoy. v Denise Morrison Yearian is a freelance writer and the mother of three children.
More Healthy Snacks
Food on a stick or straw is always fun. Insert bread, cheese and lunch meat cubes onto a skewer; add grape tomatoes, olives, pickles and lettuce leaves for a sandwich on a stick. Or cut up firm fruits such as melons, pineapples, grapes, apples and strawberries and slide them onto a stick. Sweeten the treat by dipping one-third of the fruit into yogurt.
Looking for other lip-smacking health snacks? Consider these—and do try to use whole grain and reduced- or low-fat ingredients whenever possible.
On a Roll!
• Top an English muffin, pita pocket or mini bagel with tomato sauce, mozzarella and veggies. Bake.
Spread 1 tablespoon of hummus or low-fat cream cheese evenly over a small whole grain tortilla and top with diced vegetables; add herbs and spices if desired. Roll the tortilla shell tightly and insert toothpicks every half inch. Slice between toothpicks to make pick-up pinwheels. Turn this into a sweet rendition by using 1 tablespoon of peanut butter and chopped fresh fruit instead.
Peanut Butter Passion Peanut butter is a favorite amongst kids. Top a chocolate rice cake with 1 tablespoon of peanut butter for that famous chocolate-peanut butter combo. You could also microwave 2 tablespoons of peanut butter for 15 seconds then add 2 tablespoons of water and whip with a fork until smooth. Serve it with fresh fruit or vegetables. Or mix ¼ cup of each: peanut butter, honey, nonfat dry milk, oats and rice cereal. Shape into 18 1-inch balls. Crush ½ cup of rice cereal in a zip bag then drop in balls and shake until they are coated.
Chill Out! Blend one small container of reduced-fat yogurt, 1-cup of frozen fruit and ¼-cup of fat-free milk. Pour mixture into small paper cups, insert a Popsicle stick and place in the freezer until solid. Or break a graham cracker sheet in half, fill one side with 2 tablespoons of fat-free whipped topping, add chopped fruit and cover with remaining cracker. Wrap in plastic wrap and freeze.

• Spray a tortilla with butter spray, sprinkle with sugar substitute and cinnamon then bake until crispy.
• Stuff a whole-wheat pita pocket with cream cheese and chopped vegetables, herbs and spices. • Layer berries and yogurt or whipped topping in a parfait glass. • Top a rice cake with whipped topping and fresh berries. • Toast a high-fiber waffle until crisp then cool and cut in half. On one side add a small portion of frozen yogurt and chopped fruit then top with remaining waffle. • Mix Chex cereal or popped popcorn with dried fruit, pretzel rounds, peanuts and a limited amount of M&Ms or mini bittersweet morsels. • Spray olive oil over popped popcorn then toss with taco seasoning mix, garlic powder or a small portion of parmesan cheese. • Place goldfish crackers in a bowl. Dip celery sticks into softened cream cheese then into the crackers for a nice catch.

Downtown Darlings
owntown Darlings is an “all girls” shop with products catering to the 4 to 13-year-old. However, if you love pink, the shine of crystals, and the luxuriousness of fine fabrics, then this is a space that any girl will love from 2 to 99. My store is filled with products from 18” doll clothing, dolls, a wide variety of hair accessories, bath and beauty products, cool room decor, lighting, hats, lounge wear, bags and purses, frames and piggy banks, fun iPod and cell phone accessories as well as baby gift items—the list goes on and on! I am Marcia Frelke, the owner of Downtown Darlings, and I have lived in Wilmington since 2004 with my husband, Sean. We are the proud parents of three children under the age of 7. We have called Wilmington home for the past 6 1/2 years, enjoying all that it has to offer. We have become quite involved in several different civic and religious organizations and really heard the call to truly invest in our community by opening a new business 2 1/2 months ago – Downtown Darlings. My inspiration for the store came from a tiny shop in Charleston, SC that carried nothing but 18” doll clothing, which I knew my two girls would love. I thought to myself, “What a great idea!” However, I knew that I wanted to create a store that would offer so much more than just shopping – I wanted it to be a truly magical experience. So not only do I offer more products, but I’ve also created two fun, magical areas where you can enjoy various “themed” parties, as well as bridal and wedding showers, with your closest friends. Whether it is a Princess Party, a Doll Party, a “Pamper Me” Party, or a PJ Karaoke Party, your daughter can have a memorable birthday party at a reasonable price at any age. We want this special day to be one to remember for the birthday girl and her parents. We chose Downtown Wilmington, due to its great potential! I would have never been able to create such a unique space without the gracious offerings of a historic building and all the character/ aura that goes along with it. Downtown Wilmington is really experiencing great growth, especially with the influx of new wonderful boutiques and restaurants in the last 6 months alone. Along with that, there is great attention to safety and ease of parking. Many locals aren’t aware that there are three parking decks conveniently located in downtown—one directly across from my shop! And just so you know, they offer 90 minutes of FREE parking during the week and FREE parking all day on Saturdays and Sundays. I have tried to create an exceptional shop for girls offering many items that you can’t find in any other places nearby, or even in town for that matter. It is my hope that when you enter the store that you will be wowed by the space, enchanted with the product, and excited to have a party (or two or three) of your very own with us some day. Please come see us soon! For more information, go to www.downtowndarlings.net. Downtown Darlings 112 Market Street Unit A Wilmington, NC 28401 910-251-2233 www.downtowndarlings.net

Wilmington School of Ballet: “From pre-school to pre-professional”
O
ur slogan “from pre-school to pre-professional” truly captures the essence of the school. Our pre-K program is a delightful series of classes that nurtures a love of dance and music by making ballet, tap, and jazz fun for the small child. Young children sing songs, play instruments, dress up, and play games to learn terminology, rhythm, and coordination. Our little dancers are always twirling down the sidewalk as they leave these enchanting dance classes. At the other end of the spectrum, our advanced students have gone on (often on scholarship) to the best professional programs up and down the east coast including School of American Ballet, the Kirov Academy, Harid, Joffrey, Boston, and San Antonio Ballet to name a few. Ours is the only area school to ever have multiple students place at the internationally recognized Youth America Grand Prix (www.yagp.org). Recently one of our students (Dara Holmes) received a full contract with the international Joffrey Ballet. She trained exclusively locally at (prior to recieving a full scholarshiop to the prestigous Harid School of Ballet) and is currently featured in a full page ad in the nationally recognized Dance Magazine. These are simply highlights of our students accomplishments. Please see our web site for a more complete list of student accolades. The transition from creative young child dance to the pre-professional is strategically planned to fit every age group and technical level. We also offer recreational programs to those who want to dance just for fun (both student and adult). The Center has an entire recreational division as well as a Zumba fitness studio. Our aim is to make dance accessible to all people who want to learn, regardless of skill level or ability. It is truly a love for dance that is the driving force and foundation for the school. Please see www.wilmingtonschoolofballet.com for more information.
Wilmington Preschool of Fine Arts: “Nurturing and stimulating through art, movement, exploration, and play” The Wilmington Preschool of Fine Arts is a joyful place for the young child to learn and grow through creative play and the arts. Integrating the arts into academics is a proven method for developing the love of learning in the young mind. Shapes and colors are taught all day as they count flowers in a painting or the beats of their favorite song. Gross motor and fine motor skills are developed by a professional movement educator in a studio
www.wilmingtonparent.com
setting. The monthly art themes are woven into the curriculum. At The Wilmington Preschool of Fine Arts we love children and are committed to nurturing their natural wonder as they are prepared for a life of learning. The preschool has one of the lowest teacher student ratios in town. We accept students from 3 months to 5 years old. Our facility is delightful with a garden room, an aquarium room, an ocean art room, a castle room, and an outdoor custom playground. Also unique to the school is an indoor inflatable playground where we can play rain or shine. Call the school today for a tour. Website: www.wilmingtonpreschool.com.
Creative Arts Music Together: “Music for children and the adults who love them” Music Together is a music and movement approach to early childhood music development for infant, toddler, preschool, and kindergarten children and their parents, teachers, and other primary caregivers. Originally offered to the public in 1987, it pioneered the concept of a research-based, developmentally appropriate early childhood music curriculum that strongly emphasizes and facilitates adult involvement. The Music Together approach develops every child’s birthright of basic music competence by encouraging the actual experiencing of music rather than the learning of concepts or information about music. It began as an educational project of the Center for Music and Young Children and is now being taught internationally. Call for a brochure. You can also visit www.musictogether.com to read more on the program.
Girls Time Afterschool: Our afterschool program is created just for girls in kindergarten through elementary school. Your daughter will be picked up from her school by transportation chaperoned by a female teacher, and brought to our facility at the Wilmington School of Ballet. She’ll have time to work on her homework, have a snack, play, and participate in art and dance classes. Reserve your spot today!
