pril showers and all that weather nonsense. I don’t think North Carolina has ever followed any pattern or cliche, but I really do hope to see an abundance of those May flowers that usually follow. Our unique beach community has always kept their own schedule when it comes to the seasons and this month we say - bring on the festivals and farmer’s markets! You will want to keep our calendar close at hand for the next few months to stay current with all the exciting seasonal events starting soon. The farmers will begin selling their produce at a couple locations in April, and of course April’s biggest event - The 70th Annual North Carolina Azalea Festival! Wilmington Parent has chosen April as a time to dedicate our issue to the members of our community with special needs. This month we offer a section filled with resources geared towards helping those with needs that require more attention than the average person, and those who care for them. If you know someone who spends their days as a caretaker for someone with special needs, there is an article on pg. 24 that provides advice on how to Care for the Caregiver. One way is to help them find professional resources, so a good first step is to pick up a few issues of Wilmington Parent magazine this month and pass them out to anyone you know that might benefit from this special section.

HAVE YOU HEARD….? After a little more winter paid us a visit in March, spring is finally in full swing! You can feel the excitement, and with the numerous outdoor events planned all month, we should have no trouble enjoying a little warm air and sunshine! One of the most anticipated events is back for its 70th year. The North Carolina Azalea Festival runs from April 5-9 and the children’s programming this year can’t be beat! Starting with the Azalea Festival Parade on Saturday at 9:30, and continuing with the Street Fair all weekend, families will find something for all ages. Sid the Science Kid and Peppa Pig will both hold Meet-n-Greets on Saturday from noon-2:30, the Bandit Flight Team will have a Pilot Meet-n-Greet on Saturday from 12-1, and the unforgettable Fireworks on Saturday night over the Cape Fear River! Most students will also enjoy Spring Break this month, and if you’re looking for something new to keep the little ones busy, be sure to check out The Pointe 14, the new theater located at 2223 Blockbuster Rd. They are especially thrilled to announce a unique special monthly event for families affected by Autism and other developmental delays. The event offers a special opportunity to enjoy their favorite film in a safe & accepting environment. Sensory Friendly Screenings are designed for a sensitive audience. The movie auditorium will have the lights brought up and the sound turned down. Audience members are welcome to get up, sing, walk, dance, shout - in other words, everyone can be just who they are! Visit www. stonetheaters.com for a complete schedule. Rounding out the Spring Break vacation will be a fun Easter weekend filled with Egg Hunts and sugar rushes! Although there is no shortage of eggs to be found all over Wilmington, I found three creative Egg Hunts that are worth a little extra attention.

Kidstir Cooking Kits One of the things I like about Kidstir - it was created by moms. Another thing I like? Cooking is an important life skill and should be taught early, but it’s even better when it’s fun! With Kidstir, your little foodie can make simple recipes at home - all while practicing science, language & math skills! The subscription service can be joined or given as a gift, or you can send one of the single kits, as well. This team of moms wanted to raise children who have a healthy and happy connection to food, and believe good food can be fun for kids. The subscription service kit for kids sends a box once a month. The box contains all the tools & recipes to make 3 themed healthy recipes. Snack Happy, Soup’s On, Breakfast in a Box, Taco Truck Fun Kit are a few of the themes. Kids as young as 4 (with help) can even cook! www.kidstir.com

What to do With All that Stuff!
R
By Carolyn Jabs
aising kids creates clutter. Most families do regular sweeps to get rid of outgrown clothes and toys. And most have favorite places to take donations—the rummage sale at the church, the food pantry for the community, the drop off center for Goodwill. Some community organizations will even pick up the things you no longer need or want. (To find one of these agencies, enter your zip code at donationtown.org.) And then there are the things that are hard to give away. Perhaps they were expensive—think cellphones and carseats. Or perhaps they are sentimental—think trophies, stuffed animals, books and puzzles. Either way, you feel a twinge when you think about letting them go, so they get stuck in drawers and closets. The best solution is to find the right destination for these items. Donate to someone who will appreciate them. Get them to a company or organization that can recycle them safely and perhaps creatively. Either way, parting with certain kinds of stuff can be easier if you go the extra mile. With the options listed below, you’ll have the satisfaction of knowing you made a responsible choice that clears the clutter for you and does something good for others.
Athletic and other shoes: Soles4Souls.com has distributed over 30 million pairs of shoes since they were founded after Hurricane Katrina. You can purchase a mailing label or find a drop off site on their website. They also accept gently used clothing. OneWorldRunning.com sends stillwearable shoes to runners in developing countries. Anything that can’t be worn goes to the Nike-Reuse-A-Shoe program to be recycled into running tracks and playgrounds. Their website also includes drop-off locations in many parts of the country. Binders: At the end of the school year, most families have a stack of ragged binders. If you turn them in at Staples or Office Max, you’ll get a $2 credit toward a same day purchase of a new binder. Then they’ll recycle the binders with the help of Terracycle, a company that is has partnered with major manufacturers to create innovative recycling programs for everything from toothbrushes and guitar strings to juice pouches and the blister packs from contact lenses. (terracycle.com/en-US/brigades) Books. Better World books has drop off boxes where they accept books of all kinds. Some are sold on their website and some go to literacy programs overseas. (betterworldbooks.com)
Carseats. A few organizations are trying to get used carseats into the hands of families that need them. A state-by-state list is available at recycleyourcarseat.org. Crayons: Crazy Crayons collects broken, worn or loose crayons. They will melt them down and turn them into new Eco Star crayons or multicolored crayons shaped like worms. (crazycrayons.com)
Cellphones. Even after you’ve disconnected your phone service, the phone can be used to make 911 calls. Secure the Call takes advantage of this fact, collecting phones and then distributing them to senior citizens organizations, domestic violence shelters, police departments and other agencies that can get them into the hands of people who need them.
6 | April 2017 | Wilmington Parent
Their website includes a free mailing label as well as a list of community partners in every state. (securethecall.org)
Eyeglasses. Lions International collects used eyeglasses as part of their effort to improve vision for people around the world. A list of their recycling centers is available at tinyurl.com/donateglasses. Legos. The plastic in Legos is a kind that can’t usually be recycled, so don’t mix them into the bin. Instead, ship them to Brick Recycler. No need to sort the bricks. They will repackage and get them to hospitals, schools, orphanages and other places where kids will be very happy to have them. (www.brickrecycler.com) Markers. Crayola collects markers of all kinds and turns them into a clean liquid fuel for vehicles. They pay for shipping via Fedex but your local school will have to set up the collection system. (crayola.com/colorcycle)
Puzzles. Puzzlewarehouserecycles old puzzles by donating them to schools, homeless shelters, churches and jails. If you’re pitching a puzzle because it’s missing a piece or two, they also have a helpful list of piece replacement policies for major puzzle manufacturers in the More section of their website. (puzzlewarehouse.com/Recycle-Your-Puzzles) Stuffed animals. Stuffed Animals for Emergencies gets gently used stuffed animals into the hands of children and even service members who need a little comfort. Their website lists chapters in many parts of the country, and they also have advice about how to clean stuffed animals in preparation for donation. (stuffedanimalsforemergencies.org) Trophies: Some companies that make trophies reuse the parts to make new trophies. If nobody in your community does this, you might want to ship surplus trophies to the National Trophy Recycling program. (Tinyurl. com/donatetrophies)
Everything else. Freecycle runs a grassroots network made up of over 9 million members, organized into 5,298 local groups. Membership is free, and each group is moderated by a local volunteer. Once you sign up, you can list almost anything and, in all likelihood, it will be discovered by someone in your community who will be delighted to have it. (freeycle.org) Of course, you aren’t the only family that has stuff you want to discard. Many of the groups listed above provide everything you need to start a community collection drive—an activity that might double as a fundraiser or a community service project. Whether you donate on your own or with your neighbors, all of these programs do three important things: Keep useable stuff out of the local landfill. Get things into the hands of people who can use them. And get all that clutter out of your house! That’s a win-win-win! v Carolyn Jabs, M.A., has been writing about families and technology for over twenty years. She is also the author of Cooperative Wisdom: Bringing People Together When Things Fall Apart, a book that describes a highly effective way to address conflict in families, schools and communities. Available at Amazon and cooperativewisdom.org.

RAISING GLOBAL CITIZENS: 11 Ways To Remind Kids We All Share Planet Earth By Christina Katz
E
very April 22nd all over the globe, we celebrate Earth Day. But this Earth Day, before you remind your kids about the importance of conservation, planting trees, and recycling, why not remind them of a few profound truths about what it means to be a human being living on planet earth. If you can instill a healthy amount of awe in your kids about living on earth, you likely won’t have to work as hard to get them to consume less, dig in the dirt more, and sort their trash. According to worldometers.info, there are over seven billion people on the planet already and that number is expected to grow to nine billion by 2042. Think about it. Right now and on any given day, we are part of this vast collection of humanity sharing a tiny globe that orbits the sun at a rate of about 30 kilometers per second (or eighteen and a half miles per second). As we zoom around the sun, the planet that we are standing on is constantly spinning on its axis, one full turn per day. If this information doesn’t get your kids’ minds spinning about the daily scientific miracle of life on earth, I don’t know what will. But how often do parents stop and consider our place in the larger scheme of things? Considering the length of our to-do lists, probably not often enough. So these reminders are not just for kids, they are for the benefit of the whole family. Here’s what parents can do to instill a healthy appreciation for planet earth in the hustle and bustle of our busy lives: we can slow down, pay attention to the miracle that is our life on earth, and raise our family’s consciousness about our humble place in the vast scheme of things. You might think, “But I don’t want my child to feel inconsequential and overwhelmed.” Don’t worry. Learning about the world and our place in the universe has an inspiring effect on kids, and teaching them will likely inspire you to want to learn more too. Ready to remind your family that we all share planet earth? It’s easier than you might think. Weave a glimpse of the universe into your home décor. Bring some globally minded toys to your kid’s bedroom. Let kids see for themselves that although we all matter, no one person is the center of the universe. Here’s how: 1. Display a large flat map of the world prominently in your home 2. Keep a globe within reach 3. Hang a mobile of the solar system 4. Get a telescope or visit an observatory 5. Take virtual trips around the globe together using Google Earth 6. Watch A&E Television Network’s, Spaceship Earth as a family (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/ B0095O5PX4/ref=dv_dp_ep6) 7. Display a “you are here” image of our place in the galaxy 8. Subscribe to National Geographic Kids or National Geographic Little Kids magazine 9. Watch the documentary, Babies, with the whole family 10. Take a trip to the closest science museum and visit the planetarium 11. Read Horton Hears A Who and The Lorax by Dr. Seuss out loud every year on Earth Day v Author, journalist, and writing coach Christina Katz loves being a member of the human race.

Sounder Sleep for Children with Special Needs By Malia Jacobson
P
arenting a child with special needs presents a myriad of unexpected challenges and joys. One that many parents don’t expect is a significant and stubborn lack of shut-eye that persists long past the newborn days. Children with special needs often face significant sleep challenges, a draining double-whammy that leaves millions of parents and children exhausted. Recent studies published in Pediatrics link childhood snoring and sleep apnea, or “sleep disordered breathing,” (SBD) to behavioral problems and an increased need for special education. In fact, SBD is strongly associated with conditions like Down syndrome and cerebral palsy. What’s more, sleep problems can be especially devastating to children with special needs, because the resulting sleep deprivation can worsen the symptoms of their existing medical or behavioral problems, says Carole L. Marcus, M.D., director CHOP Sleep Center in Philadelphia.
Night Rumbles: snoring and sleep apnea Most children snore once in awhile, and 10 percent snore most nights. But these nighttime noises shouldn’t be dismissed as “normal:” researchers now believe that snoring is on the same spectrum as sleep apnea, a disorder characterized by pauses in breathing that cause brief awakenings. Left untreated, sleep apnea can contribute to behavioral problems and learning difficulties, even hyperactivity. A study by the American College of Chest Physicians found that children who snored loudly were twice as likely to have learning impairment. The potential impact is so severe that the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that all children who snore be screened for sleep apnea, says Robert Heinle, M.D., of the Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children Sleep Lab in Wilmington, Delaware. Other SDB warning signs include sleeping in strange positions, experiencing night terrors, bedwetting, or perspiring during sleep, says Renee Turchi, M.D., board-certified pediatrician with St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children in Philadelphia.

How to help: The good news: nearly all otherwise-healthy children with sleep apnea respond well to having the tonsils removed, says Marcus. Back-sleeping can exacerbate snoring; regular snorers or those with sleep apnea should choose another position (“back to sleep” is still best for babies, though).
Beyond snoring: sleep and special needs Rates of sleep apnea and other sleep troubles skyrocket for children with special needs. About two-thirds of children with Down syndrome have sleep apnea, says Marcus; a larger tongue, a small mid-face, and lower muscle tone make these children more prone to SDB and apnea. Children with cerebral palsy, spina bifida, and other conditions associated with low muscle tone also have higher rates of sleep apnea. According to multiple studies, over half of children with Down syndrome ages 7-11 wake during the night, and nearly 40 percent wet the bed. Children with autism can have difficulties with the circadian rhythm, the sleep-wake cycle that governs wakefulness and sleep, driving them to stay up too late, says Marcus. “Our brains regulate sleep, so if the brain is abnormal for any reason, sleep is going to be impacted, too.” How to help: Though some special-needs sleep problems are physiological in nature, such as those related to low muscle tone, many are behavioral, such as habitual night wakings, waking too early in the morning, or fighting bedtime. “Often, parents may not set the same bedtime limits for children with special needs that they set for other children,” says Marcus. Defining clear parameters for sleep—including when bedtime occurs, where a child sleeps, and what is an acceptable hour to wake in the morning—and gently yet firmly enforcing these household rules, night after night, can help get sleep on track for children with special needs. v Malia Jacobson is a nationally published health journalist and mom. Natural Treatments GO THE for ADHD EXTRA MILE By Adam Breiner, ND

Use EEG neurofeedback to optimize your brain’s performance. “Neurofeedback is a safe, simple, and fun way to eliminate abnormal brainwave patterns and help kids and adults alike grow toward optimal health,” explains Dr. Breiner. EEG neurofeedback is a painless, non-invasive therapy that uses an electroencephalogram (EEG) to read and measure the brain’s electrical activity. During the session, special software prompts the brain to subconsciously eliminate abnormal brainwave patterns by rewarding the patient—for example, by providing audible feedback or making a movie brighter.

Get tested for food sensitivities. Undiagnosed food allergies, sensitivities, or intolerances to certain foods—such as wheat or dairy—may bring on inflammation and symptoms of ADHD, so if you have been feeling scattered, anxious, or that your attention span has lessened, consider getting tested or try cutting out a suspected food for at least 30 days to see if your symptoms disappear.
Make smarter dietary choices. Eat a balanced diet of proteins, vegetables, and healthy fats, urges Dr. Breiner. “Your body is designed to eat these foods and will perform at its best when you stick to these guidelines,” he says. “And be sure to focus on the quality of your meat, vegetables, and dairy products. Buy free range and organic whenever possible.” Additionally, avoid the foods that could increase ADHD symptoms. Steer clear of processed foods with artificial dyes, which have been linked to hyperactivity in children. Quit or reduce your intake of gluten and grains, and avoid sugar and refined carbohydrates such as bread, chips, and white rice Exercise and move often. We are not designed to sit still at a desk all day, so it’s little wonder that children fidget in their desks and can’t concentrate when forced to sit for hours at a time. Dr. Breiner explains that exercise and movement is a powerful anecdote for helping kids and adults gain clarity, focus, and a general sense of calm and well-being. Remember, for generations, humans have had to climb, walk, run, and lift for their survival. We no longer have to move, but we desperately still need to!
Get a daily dose of “green.” Getting out in nature may help improve symptoms of ADHD. A recent study reveals that children with ADHD experienced a reduction in their symptoms after spending time in green outdoor settings. Get plenty of family “outdoor time”—the greener, the better! Let children do homework outside after school, go for scenic walks in parks or natural areas, and take every chance to enjoy the sunlight and fresh air. v Adam Breiner, ND, offers a natural protocol for ADHD that will put you back on top of your game.

he Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report that cases of ADHD are up 42 percent from the previous decade. Whether this rise is due to environmental factors, increased awareness, overdiagnosis, or anything else, parents everywhere are wringing their hands. The lack of focus, impulsivity, and hyperactive behavior can have serious implications for kids’ academic performance—not to mention the many adults who find that the same symptoms are hindering their own success. Yet putting your child on ADHD medication is a serious step—and one that many people are reluctant to take. The good news, asserts Dr. Adam Breiner—who practices family medicine at The NeuroEdge Brain Performance Center, a division of The Breiner Whole-Body Health Center, in Fairfield, CT—is that there are better, more natural ways to treat ADHD in children and adults.

hen Tracy Glock’s 13-month-old daughter Kira was hospitalized with Acute Myeloid Leukemia, she was touched by the outpouring of support she and her husband received. During those eight difficult months, the community rallied around the family. Friends and acquaintances babysat Kira in the hospital while her mom and dad worked, and many others helped by delivering meals and even mowing the family’s lawn. Although Kira, now seven, has recovered from the frightening ordeal, she still faces many daily challenges. As a child with Down syndrome and autism, learning and development takes longer and requires more patience compared to the typically developing child. Like many parents who have children with special needs, Glock says finding time for herself is difficult. While many of us know how to help a family in crisis, how do we support parents who often put their own needs last as they focus on the daily challenges of caring for special needs youngsters?
Offer to babysit. Finding trustworthy, alternate caretakers is a huge relief for parents who regularly juggle doctor’s appointments, school issues and therapy, not to mention jobs and other children. Because special needs children require more attention from their parents, healthcare providers and therapists, other youngsters in the family may feel slighted. “Children always struggle and this is the case whether they’re special needs or not,” says Nancy Masannat, mom to two children, including Emy, 16, and Kyle, 14, who is on the autism spectrum. “There’s going to be sibling jealousies.” Having access to a qualified babysitter you can trust with your special needs child, can give you an opportunity to spend much-needed, one-on-one time with your other children too.
Listen. Ask your friend how she’s doing and then simply listen. Avoid offering platitudes or suggestions to help her fix problems. “We all just like to be heard. Everybody likes to vent,” Masannat says. “Just listen to what the issues are without judgment. That’s a huge help for everybody, but primarily when you’re dealing with something that someone else might not understand.” Educate yourself. Get to know your friend’s child, including her disability, her personality quirks and her individual needs. And ask your friend about her specific parenting challenges. “It shows that you care and will help you provide more effective support,” says Heather Trammell, mom to two special needs children, including Beth, 14, who has Down syndrome and Marie, 11, who has high-functioning autism. Both girls also have a connective tissue disorder called Ehlers-Danlos syndrome. To find support groups in your area, consult with the therapists and teachers your child already works with, your library, your church and online. For example, www.autismspeaks.org, which includes resources for families or the National Down Syndrome Society, www.ndss.org. Also check out Facebook and MeetUp.com for local support groups. v

A Brighter Summer Ahead We make math make sense.
GOOD AT MATH By Erika Lewis
W
ant to help your kids in math? A good start may be to change the way you talk about it. We need to erase the all-too-common phrases “bad at math” and “not a math person” from our vocabulary. Sometime in the last few decades, we started lumping people into two categories – those who are good at math and those who aren’t. Truthfully, since I have a math background, I kind of liked the distinction. It’s only when my son recently challenged the concept of math people and not-math people that I started thinking about the damage this kind of labeling can do. It is true that math comes easier for some kids than others. So does reading. But we don’t give slower readers a pass; we work with them until they’re good at it. We need to treat math just like reading. Anyone can and must learn to do it. Higher math skills lead to higher standardized test scores, better college acceptance, and better job opportunities. Our job as parents is to help our kids reach their potential in every subject. Most kids can do algebra, geometry, and even calculus. We are short changing them when we use terms like “bad at math” or “not a math person” – to describe them or us. We’re implying that math ability is a characteristic like blond hair that some people have and some don’t, rather than a skill that you can build by learning and practicing. By using those phrases around your kids, you may be erecting a mathematical glass ceiling. Especially when they’re young, when our children still think we know everything and want to be just like us, hearing this can send the wrong message about their future math potential. New math concepts can often be overwhelming, and kids will get frustrated and say they can’t do it. Reading Shakespeare or their first Spanish class could leave them with the same feeling. You might also be overwhelmed by some math. My kids were in elementary school the first time I couldn’t do their homework – and I have a college degree in math! Still, I couldn’t for the life of me remember how to divide fractions. A quick glance at the math book and I was able to help, but by the time they got to high school, they were finding help on YouTube and bypassing me altogether. If you look at a math problem and can’t figure it out, it’s probably something you’ve never learned or something you’ve forgotten. When our children get overwhelmed by math, as with anything they’re trying to learn, we should encourage them and give them extra help if needed. Some people are able to go further in math than others, but we don’t want to set the bar low just because of our own math background or current math skills. Rather, send the message that anyone can be good at math. Some can be great at math. Give your children the tools and support to find out which they are. After reading about the U.S. dropping in a global ranking of math students, she took up the cause of changing the way we talk about math. v

YOUR HEALTH
Preparing for Allergy Season S
pring is finally here! That brings warm temperatures and with that everything blooms. While the flowers and trees are always so beautiful, they unfortunately bring about the ‘allergy season’. This time of seasonal allergies can be dreadful thanks to all the many symptoms allergies cause from runny noses to scratchy throats. If you suffer from allergies, you are far from alone. According to the American College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology, approximately 50 million people in the US are affected by allergic rhinitis (aka hay fever). Below are some ways to hopefully assist in making it through the allergy season with a few less sneezes and sniffles.
Medicine. The most immediate way to alleviate symptoms is taking allergy medicine. Luckily, there are many over the counter options from pills to nasal sprays. For those that have stopped taking their allergy medicine during the winter months, start those back ASAP as it takes a couple weeks for them to kick in upon starting back regular doses. Spring Cleaning. Get rid of things that aren’t needed but collect dust, and in turn dust mites, which often cause more allergy symptoms than pollen in some people.
End of Day Routines. While these are a good idea to do every day during the allergy season, they are especially helpful to do on days spent outdoors. First, take a shower in the evening to wash off all pollen. Second, after
removing dirty clothes keep them in a separate room from sleeping and living quarters. For example, a laundry room or closet with the door closed.
Laundry. As mentioned above, keep dirty clothes which will have pollen on them in a separate room but also try to do laundry more frequently than normal to get rid of the pollen completely. Also, wash clothes weekly in hot water to decrease allergens and dust mites. Avoid hang drying whenever possible. Outdoors. The early morning hours between 5 and 10 a.m. are typically the highest pollen count times, so avoid being outdoors during these times. Also, keep up to date on the pollen counts and allergens through either the local weather channel or Weather.com. On the high pollen days it’s best to limit outdoor time.
See an Allergist. In addition to taking medicine, if your allergy symptoms are severe and/or can’t be controlled, it’s time to see an allergist. They can run tests to determine allergens and also provide allergy shots also known as immunotherapy to vastly eliminate and often completely remove allergy symptoms. v Suzy Fielders is a working mom of a spirited 10 year old daughter. Free 2017-2018 School Year Athletic Pre-Participation Screening Exams
Each year, all North Carolina students who plan to participate in athletics or cheerleading must undergo a state-mandated screening examination. For many years, physicians in the New Hanover-Pender County Medical Society, in concert with the New Hanover County Health Department and New Hanover County Schools, have offered free screenings for New Hanover County athletes and cheerleaders at designated times. Exams for the boys will be on Thursday, June 01, 2017. Girls’ exams will be on Thursday, June 08, 2017. Exams are at the New Hanover County Health Department at 2029 South 17th Street, Wilmington, NC 28401. The waiting area for students is the Health Department’s parking lot facing 17th street in front of the Health Department Clinic building. After lining up at the entrance, students will be seen on a first come, first served basis, this year, instead of by school groups. Physicians are required to see the two-page medical history, emergency information, and parental permission forms which are available in the schools and at the Board of Education. These forms must be completed and signed by a parent or guardian before the exam is begun. Forms may also be downloaded from www.nhcs.net. If there are questions, email MedicalSociety@NHPCMS.org or call 251-6100 ext. 270
