EDITOR’S NOTE

T

his year I have become more aware of the conflict surrounding me, among people I know, and others I just see in passing around town. Over the years, you get busy with kids and work, and while schedules keep you focused on the immediate needs of your family, you may miss what’s happening right in front of you. Many people I know have had a similar awakening this year, and are looking for an outlet. Spreading love and kindness may be the best possible way to use this awareness. This month, we are featuring an article that encourages community kindness. While these are some good starting points, I know that we can all come up with a few more creative and loving ways to move our community towards a positive new year. February is also a great month to start planning your parties for the year. Our Party Guide has pages full of resources and fun ideas! Whether it’s your little ones first celebration, or your teenager is looking for a more sophisticated soiree, we have you covered. Even if you’re not planning a party soon, many of these ideas are perfect for a fun weekend distraction! Wilmington Parent’s most popular event of the year is coming soon! The Annual Summer Camp Fair will be held on February 24th. Be sure to check on our website for updates, more information, and to find out more about other events around town. We are always adding to our online calendar! Happy Valentine’s Day!

Wilmington seems to be a winter wonderland this year! While sledding on surfboards, and creative snowmen sculptures have been a rare joy, it may be time to take a look at road safety. While I have some experience driving in icy conditions, I quickly discovered that I neglected to teach my teen driver this skill. So parents, in case this white stuff appears again, share these tips with your young drivers. Actually, based on the number of cars I saw in the ditches last month, maybe we should all look these over. • Skid control. If your teens’ car starts to skid due to a slick road, teach them to take their foot off the gas, keep both hands on the wheel, look where they want to go and then steer there. • Keep your gas tank close to full. If your teen gets stuck in traffic or a snow storm, they might need more fuel than they anticipated to get home or to keep warm. Have a quality set of windshield wipers. Make sure your teen has a quality set of windshield wiper blades on the car he or she will be driving, this is important year-round, of course, but good wipers are your best defense against snow. • Distance. Keep a much greater distance between your car and the car in front of you. Slamming on brakes is not an option in this weather.

Wilmington has such a vibrant arts community, and it’s wonderful when we see that community give back in the form of enrichment. The Chamber Music Wilmington is an organization that presents four concerts each season featuring nationally and internationally renowned classical ensembles. They also have an educational outreach program. Prior to most concerts, these consummate musicians provide a masterclass to students of all ages. These classes are free to participate in and people are also welcome to observe. The next class will be on February 25th at 2pm in the WHQR Gallery on Front Street. Check out www.chambermusicwilmington.org for a schedule. The Hill School of Wilmington is continuing their series of workshops for parents and the next one is coming up the first week in March. Preparing Your Child for High School and College will be held on Thursday, March 8, 2018. This is an informative workshop created to educate parents on steps they can take to help ensure a smooth transition into high school and post-secondary education. Strategies to empower learning disabled students will be discussed with the goal of giving them the confidence and skills needed to succeed in high school and beyond. Please visit www.HillSchoolofWilmington.org to register.

Chocolate sun We might be hiding inside trying to stay warm, but that doesn’t mean we need to let our golden skin turn pasty white. This is Wilmington, and beach days are just around the corner. Personally, I don’t want to show up looking like a tourist. I have tried tanning creams, and honestly they just seem to make a mess. This Chocolate Sun brand is amazing. My skin not only looks tan, but feels cared for and smooth. Of course, I’m a Wonder Woman fan too, and apparently this is the stuff Gal Gadot used on set. I trust Wonder Woman, so this stuff is my new year round tan! Order and learn more at www.chocolatesun.com.

Cyantific Skin Care When the sun does come out in Wilmington, we need to be smart about caring for our skin. Protect, nourish and hydrate your skin with Cyantific Skin Care. The changing seasons can take a toll on your skin. I know it sounds strange, but Cyantific uses blue-green algae to give you a healthy, glowing complexion. The blue-green algae used by Cyantific contain compounds that absorb skin-damaging UV light better than anything else known to exist in nature. Visit www.cyantificskincare.com and read more about this unique product. v

GROWING UP ONLINE

Teaching Kids to Be Kind Online N

By Carolyn Jabs

o parent plans to raise an unkind, much less a cruel, child. In fact, most of us put considerable effort into polishing our children’s manners and teaching them to respect other people. Unfortunately, many of those lessons are being undercut online. Our culture, as a whole, is going through a rude and disrespectful era, a problem that seems to be amplified in and by online communication. Recent research by the Pew Internet and American Life Project reported that one in four adults have experienced online harassment and 66% have witnessed it. The numbers are even higher for young people. The Pew Study also pointed out that there’s widespread disagreement about what kinds of speech are unacceptable and what kinds of responses are appropriate. Some argue that in a free society, people have to be able to say whatever is on their minds, no matter how vile, and other people should just “shake it off.” Plenty of others feel that the culture itself is being degraded when citizens mock, deride and attack each other. They favor more involvement by service providers and even law enforcement. Many people oscillate, defending strong language when it’s used in defense of ideas that matter to them and criticizing it when it’s used by opponents. Civility in the culture isn’t likely to be restored unless individuals commit themselves to respectful communication regardless of the venue. Parents can play a part by helping kids think through what they experience and do online. Sometimes that that may mean encouraging kids to protect themselves by disengaging from conversations and even communities in which abusive language is the norm. Other times parents may want to support children who want to take a stand on behalf of peers who are being mistreated. (Iwitnessbullying.org and kindness.org provide specific ideas and kid-friendly materials that can be deployed in the battle against online harassment in all its many forms.) Before they can engage in that kind of advocacy, kids need to be grounded in the fundamentals. These principles may seem a little old-fashioned, but they aren’t obsolete. They survive because they are the basis for healthy, respectful relationships at home, in school and eventually in the workplace and the larger community. • No slurs of any kind---ever. Make it clear through your rules and your own habits that you have zero tolerance for words that denigrate people • The pain of others isn’t funny. Steer kids away from television shows, movies and online videos that ask them to override their natural feelings of compassion and laugh at someone else’s misfortune. • Don’t spread rumors. Teach kids not to repeat—or forward--unkind things they hear about other people. This is rule is especially important if, for some reason, they don’t especially like the other person. • Appreciate privacy. Help your child understand that a message

6 | February 2018 | Wilmington Parent

or photo sent by a friend should be treated as confidential. Online communication should not be forwarded or posted without permission from the person who sent it. • No tantrums. Offline, if your child doesn’t like something another person does or says, they can express their opinion but they aren’t allowed to scream and curse. A dispute online is no different. No ranting. No offensive language. No personal attacks. • Be careful about humor. Offline, sarcastic comments are often accompanied by a smile or a laugh so the other person knows you’re not serious. Online, it’s much harder to differentiate between a comment that’s meant to be funny and one that should be taken seriously. Emoticons and other visual cues may help but they, too, can be misinterpreted. • Think twice about insults. Everyone seems to use them as a way of being clever. Some parents even tease their kids with put-downs. The question we all have to consider is why it’s amusing to undermine another person’s self-esteem. Online, especially, it may be time to revive the oldfashioned rule: If you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all. • Don’t press send. A time-honored way of venting is to write a nasty letter—and then tear it up. Suggest that when your child is upset with someone online, he or she write out all their hostile feelings and then press delete instead of send. That way, he or she releases the emotion without hurting anyone else. Perhaps the most helpful thing parents can do is help children visualize the person on the other end of online communication. Imagine saying the same thing face to face. What feelings would the other person have? What expressions would be on his or her face? Now, ask your child to turn the conversation around. What if another person said to you what you were thinking about writing in a text or posting on Snapchat? How would you feel? What would you want to do? These questions are, of course, a new way of getting kids to think about the very ancient and universal moral rule—“Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” This simple principle survives because it helps people recognize cruelty and practice kindness--two capabilities that are crucial in every human interaction regardless of where it occurs online or in the three dimensional world. v Carolyn Jabs, M.A., has been writing about families and technology for over twenty years. She is also the author of Cooperative Wisdom: Bringing People Together When Things Fall Apart, a book that describes a highly effective way to address conflict in families, schools and communities. Available at Amazon and cooperativewisdom.org.

SINGLE MOM’S GUIDE TO VALENTINE’S DAY

T

he entire marketing campaign that promotes Valentine’s Day seems determined to not only leave out single people, it can also make those who are living the unattached life feel kinda depressed. Don’t let those sappy commercials make you feel like you are doing something wrong with your life. Live this day, and celebrate the loving people that surround you with ALL your heart!

Create some annual activities that you do with just you and your kids. Whether you want to get crafty or just watch “A Charlie Brown Valentine” with your kids as you devour some pizza, creating annual rituals will be fun and give you and your kids something to look forward to every year. Whether it’s baking, or a craft project, the key is to create a loving environment where everyone is having fun, spending time together, and even doing something creative together.

Throw your own party with your kids. If you’re feeling a bit down this year, or don’t have anywhere to go, throw your own party! Invite some of the other parents (whether single or in relationships) over with their kids to make Valentines and enjoy some sweets.

Love yourself and practice self-care. Embrace where you are right now in your life and remember, there’s nothing wrong with being single! If no one is buying you a Valentine’s Day gift this year, buy or make yourself one. Do something nice for you, whether that’s booking a massage, running a bubble bath, going to a movie, hiking through the woods enjoying nature, or buying yourself something special. Self-love and self-care are super important to stay positive. And when you’re in a positive mind space, you attract other positive people into your life. Do something nice for someone else. One of the best ways to feel love is to give love. You can give love in small ways and large ways. You could smile at someone on the street, pay for someone’s meal behind you in a drive through, donate to a charity, and spend some time volunteering. Volunteering with your kids and helping others is a great way to feel love and spread love for Valentine’s Day. v

For Love of Community

T

his year, we need to spread love to every corner of our community, as many days of the year as possible. While sharing your love with close family members during Valentine’s Day is important, let’s use this day to dedicate ourselves to positivity and understanding, starting with our very own beautiful Cape Fear Region.

Donate to victims Donate gently used clothing and household items to Vintage Values Resale Shops. Donations are used to help support Domestic Violence Shelter and Services, Inc. Vintage Values locations in Wilmington are as follows: 609 Castle Street (762-7720); University Landing, 413 South College Road (793-4411); Monkey Junction (in front of WalMart), 5226 South College Road (350-8918).

A service of love

GO THE EXTRA MILE for your children

Bake a cake or cookies and bring it to one of the many local fire and/or police stations. It is easy to forget that people are always watching out for you and protecting you. Bake some goodies and show those hardworking people that you care.

What do you love? Make a giant paper heart and put it downtown. Have community members each write down what they love about the community. Put the heart on display for everyone to see after it is finished.

Some puppy love Go to the New Hanover Humane Society located at 2405 N 23rd St. and help take care of the dogs. Take them for walks and give them love. Who knows? Maybe you will end up with a new member of the family.

A Valentine for Mother Earth The Cape Fear River Watch is always looking for volunteers to help clean in and around the river. They organize watershed clean-ups on the second Saturday of each month in partnership with Keep New Hanover Beautiful. Volunteers pull trash and debris from our urban streams from shore or by boat—whatever it takes to keep the river clean and have some fun. To make your region a cleaner, healthier place to live, participate regularly in watershed clean-ups! This month’s clean up is at Greenfield Lake on February 10th, 9-11am. Kayaks, canoes, and paddle-boats will be available for use for folks wanting to sweep from the water. If you’d like to use one, please arrive 15- 20 minutes early. As always, gloves, pickers, bags, and water will be provided. Please bring your own water bottle! See the year’s schedule at www.capefearriverwatch.org.

Start a community garden with a group of like-minded families. With a community garden, the work is shared, with each family taking shifts. When it’s time for a big planting or harvest, plan a big event and make it a fun party! Once each family has their share of the crop, donate the rest to the Good Shepherd Center or the Food Bank CENC of Wilmington. Gardens done right always yield more than can be used, so even if you only have a small garden, there is usually something left to give! v

PLANNING A DISNEY VACATION? O

ne question I get a lot here at My Mickey Vacation Travel is “What kind of vacation can we have for our budget?” The fact is, every family is different, but thanks to my vast experience, I can build your dream vacation based on your interests.

Here are some of my best tips for planning your Disney vacation without breaking the bank.

1. Know when to go. Disney parks have seasons, like any destination. Prices fluctuate throughout the year, but tend to be highest around major holidays, during school vacations, and in the early summer.

2. Choose the right resort. There are several categories of Walt Disney World resorts: Value, Moderate, and Deluxe. For the price, a value resort is a great option, but don’t expect too many extras. If you want more amenities (larger pools with slides, a location on the monorail) expect to pay more for a Deluxe resort (but it will be worth it).

3. Buy the right park tickets. The more days you purchase on your park tickets, the lower the per day cost. Adding on options like the Park Hopper can increase the cost. I can help you decide if this is an option you really need based on your itinerary.

4. Know your dining habits. The Disney Dining Plan is quite popular. It allows you to prepay for your meals and snacks, and you can save some money on your expenses. If you like to have a sit-down meal each day, or plan to enjoy lots of character meals, it’s probably a great option. I like that it’s all pre-paid. Talk with me to weigh your options, and determine which plan works best for your family.

5. Don’t forget the extras. Staying at a Disney resort offers a great deal of value over offsite options: free transportation from the airport, free WiFi access, amazing pools, free transportation to the parks from your resort, free Magic Bands, no parking fees at the resort or parks (if you are driving), and much, much, more. Not only can you save hundreds, you also save time and aggravation. As the owner of My Mickey Vacation Travel, I am experienced in planning all types of vacations, and can take all of the guesswork and stress out of planning yours. Contact me today at karen@mymickeyvacation.com or (910) 398-4438 to get started!

FIRST BIRTHDAY GIFTS

THAT KEEP GIVING H

By Christina Katz

ere’s what I remember about my daughter’s first birthday. We made a big fuss She had no idea what was going on. She was not even interested in the carrot cake I had made especially for her. What I wish I had realized instead is that her birthday was a big deal for us, but just another day in babydom, for her. Now that I’m older and wiser and my daughter is also older and more wise-cracking, these are the gifts I wish I had lined up for her on her first birthday instead of trying to impress upon her that her birthday was a super big deal.

Savings Account. Whenever you get money gifts from relatives, put half of the money in your child’s savings account. Why? Because even though you think you need every kiddy gadget known to mankind when your child is young, you can often find items discounted or gently used for a lot less. So stash some of your child’s gift money now. You will be so glad you did later. And a few of the suggestions that follow, require money. So if you don’t have extra money of your own, you will be able to draw on money from your child’s saving account.

Name As URL. We are living in the digital age and life is only going to become increasingly online and virtual by the time our little ones become big ones. So it’s nice to know that your future celebrity or entrepreneur has digital security in the form of their name reserved online. How will they use it? This is a lot less important right now than making sure that the possibility exists. Besides, you already saved some of that gift money, so you can use it for this and they won’t even owe you anything when they become rich and famous. But don’t worry about hosting. All you need to pay for is the URL itself and the privacy to keep your personal information offline. Safety Deposit Box. Savings accounts are a fairly vague concept for kids to understand. This is

how they think: so, you want to take my money away from me and go put it in a boring-looking building where I can’t even visit it? This makes no sense to developing brains. But all kids innately understand the concept of treasure. And this is why you should have one (aka, a safety deposit box). Take them to visit your family treasures once a year. Show them how you keep a little cash, some jewels, and copies of important documents there and watch their eyes grow wide with excitement every time you say it’s time to go to the bank. And then, while you have their rapt attention, teach them all the ways you use the bank to secure and manage your money.

College Fund. If you can put aside even just $50 per month, it will really add up over the years and make a significant dent in your future college costs. Better yet if you can start with $50 a month and inch that up as your child grows. Start your account at www.cfnc.org and take one worry off your list. Money Coach. Your child is probably too young to understand personal economics. How about you? If you are one of the many Americans who feel overwhelmed, inexperienced or uninformed when it comes to money management, let your baby be your wake-up call. You can either get yourself involved in money management coaching formally by searching for a certified coach online. Or you could swing by your local bank once and a while and ask your local banker for a little moneymanagement advice based on how much you are earning and saving each month. Sometimes just having a neutral mentor to discuss savings strategies with can make a wealth of difference. Then, later, as your child grows, either coach your child on money management yourself or call on your trusted mentor to help you do the job. v Journalist, author, and writing coach, Christina Katz enjoys offering creative saving and spending strategies to growing families who want to enjoy a sense of future security.

here are many good reasons for children to play tea party. The ritual of making and enjoying tea helps sippers of every age learn how to focus, slow down and relish the moment. Children seem to intuitively understand how much there is to appreciate from the timehonored practice of making tea and sharing it with others. And no wonder, since tea is an ancient beverage that has been around for over five thousand years.

Tea For Two Show your kids how a tea party should work. Set a small table with a tablecloth, a teapot, two teacups, teaspoons, napkins, and sugar and milk dispensers. Add a vase of flowers and a tiered serving tray of sandwiches, cookies, scones, and cakes. When you have supplies on hand, tea for two can come together in a few moments. Put on some music, turn off your phones, and enjoy quality time with each other.

Tea For Several

Follow the instructions for tea for two, but increase the amount of teapots to two, and serve two types of teas. You may wish to add a larger variety of sandwiches and treats, as well. A tea party this size is perfect for a party of 4-6. If the tea is closer to dinnertime, add a plate of fruit or veggies to create more of a meal and serve decaffeinated varieties of tea only.

Tea For Many Follow the instructions for tea for two, but set a large table or several stations, and increase the variety of teas, sandwiches and treats. You may wish to decorate the room or rooms of the party with bunting, oversized tissue-paper flowers, paper lanterns, crepe paper decorations or tulle. Turn on uplifting music, greet each guest at the door, and enjoy introducing your friends to each other. DISTRESSING ANXIETY SYMPTOMS YOU MIGHT NEVER EXPECT By Kimberly Blaker

I

out of the blue you feel your brain spin 180 degrees at lightning speed as if fueled by an electrical current. This bizarre feeling isn’t lightheadedness, dizziness, or anything you’ve ever experienced. This could be a sign of anxiety. The following are some of the more bizarre symptoms of anxiety, though most are not uncommon. If you experience symptoms that persist, seek medical attention to rule out a medical cause since all the symptoms of anxiety can also be associated with various medical conditions.

Phantom ringing. Tinnitus, which is a ringing in the ears, can be a sign of stress or anxiety and can be experienced in several ways. According to anxietycentre.com, you may hear buzzing, ringing, humming, whizzing, chirping, roaring, swooshing, or any number of other sounds. Burning sensation. This unusual anxiety symptom can be felt on your skin, lips, tongue, and even in your eyes. It can feel like a sunburn despite no sunburn being present, a prickling sensation, or even shooting sparks. Physical numbness or tingling. These feelings can occur in your hands, feet, arms, legs, or face. It can also be felt as physical weakness. Phantom smell. Phantosmia, which is an olfactory hallucination, sometimes occurs with anxiety. It can cause you to smell something that isn’t there, or rather, a neutral smell becomes unpleasant. Brain shivers or zaps. Brain shivers or zaps, explains anxietycentre.

com, can feel like an electrical jolt or a shaking, vibration, or tremor in the brain.

Globus with this anxiety symptom, it feels like a lump in your throat, or you might have difficulty swallowing. Some people also feel a tightness in their throat.

Shooting pains. These can be experienced in several areas of your body including your face, abdomen, arms, and chest during episodes of anxiety. Freezing hands and feet. Stress and anxiety can decrease your circulation. As a result, your hands and feet may feel icy. HOW TO ALLEVIATE ANXIETY During periods of high stress, get plenty of rest. This will help keep anxiety under control and result in fewer or less severe symptoms. Mindfulness meditation is another useful technique for reducing anxiety according to a growing body of research. Get some exercise. It doesn’t have to be a lengthy, hardcore workout. Even a 10-minute brisk walk can provide several hours of anxiety relief. v

Wellness Trends to Prioritize in 2018 Thrive: Start a bullet journal to fuel your success toward your health and wellness goals. This fun, colorful practice makes your to-do lists into done lists. Hydrate: Drinking more water and less of everything else is the new little black dress. It looks great on everyone. Revive: Intermittent fasting goes mainstream and doesn’t have to be extreme. Just fast for half your day, 7:30pm to 7:30am to lose weight, boost energy and revitalize digestion. Inspire: Optimism is in. After a year of negative vibes, 2018 is all about seeing the good and kindness in ourselves and others. Value: In this disposable world we live in we will find ways to truly appreciate our environment and bodies by supporting sustainable and clean beauty and self care products.

Keep kids moving this winter THE FLOOR IS LAVA! We’ve all played this classic game, but it doubles as an aerobic activity for your child—since crossing the floor “unburned” is no easy feat. DANCE IT OUT Make a playlist full of up-tempo songs to get both you and your child off the couch—and, for extra child-parent bonding, fill it with their favorite songs. GET INTO MARTIAL ARTS Kung fu and taekwondo give children structured environments that encourage mental focus and well as physical development. SIMON SAYS...WORK OUT Tailor what “Simon Says” to how much energy your child needs to burn off. Simon can tell your child to do gentle yoga, but he can also have her run around the house. PLAY HORSE OR HOPSCOTCH Both of these games encourage children to exercise their coordination while working on their comprehension—hopscotch challenges children to identify numbers, while the basketball game Horse uses letters.

Local Hikes Abbey Nature Preserve at Poplar Grove This is the perfect place to escape from the busy loops and parks. With multiple paths to choose from, you can take a longer stroll if you want, or choose a short one. Along the way, there is a picnic area near a lake, and a picturesque bridge. One thing to be aware of, this is an off leash dog trail. So if you have a fear of dogs, this may not be the hike for you. If you have a well behaved dog that likes to go for a fun tromp through the woods, then this is your spot! Sugarloaf Trail at Carolina Beach State Park This 3.5 mile loop trail is a nice escape from the busy beach, but still gives you the benefits of enjoying the coastal environment. When you start out, choose to go left first and you will be rewarded with the best views at the end of your hike. This trail also allows dogs, but they must stay on a leash. Bluethenthal Wildflower Preserve This loop is much shorter at only .7 miles and is hidden right in the middle of Wilmington. Park near the Fisher Field House off Riegle Rd on the UNCW campus and you are a short walk from the trailhead. This is a heavily wooded area that gives you the feel of being deep in the woods with small ponds and benches scattered throughout the trail. Keep your eyes alert and you might find some pitcher plants!

Hoggard High School Student-Athlete Selected for NFL Carolina Panthers Community Captain Christian Hollar, a senior at Hoggard High School, has been selected as an NFL Carolina Panthers Community Captain. The Carolina Panthers Community Captain program presented by Guy Roofing recognizes 10 outstanding high school student-athletes in the Carolinas each fall who excel in their sport, in the classroom and in their community. On Sunday, December 10, 2017, the winners were honored at an onfield ceremony of the Carolina Panthers home game against the Minnesota Vikings in which each Community Captain received a personalized Carolina Panthers game ball. Christian was one of the 2017 John T. Hoggard High School Varsity football team captains and played the middle linebacker position. Last year, he made both the All-Conference and All-Area football lists, which led him to earning numerous NCAA Division 1 football offers. He has lettered in four different sports. He has excelled throughout high school in the International Baccalaureate program as well as Advanced Placement courses. Prior to high school, he was recognized by the John Hopkins Center for Gifted and Talented Youth and was placed in the school district’s academically and intellectually gifted program. At the beginning of last year, Christian created a club called Hollar for Help that focuses on increasing the core grade point averages of academically distressed athletes at John T. Hoggard High School. In order to be considered as a Community Captain, individuals must maintain a 3.0 or higher grade point average, perform voluntary community service, write an essay, and be nominated by a high school official (principal, coach, athletic director or teacher) or a member of the media. The award is open to all varsity football athletes and female varsity athletes. For more information on the Carolina Panthers Community Captain program, visit their website at http://www.panthers.com/community/prep-football/community-captain.html.
