o you have plans for a New You this year? 62% of Americans admit to making New Year’s resolutions, but how many succeed? Setting goals and following them through to completion can be overwhelming, and when you don’t succeed, discouraging. If you want to find ways to improve your life for the New Year, try out some of the ideas in our New Year, New You section. If you have decided against resolutions this January, writer Christina Katz offers a new way to bring in 2017. Instead of focusing on how to improve, try focusing on the good things that have happened all year! Setting goals can still be a beneficial way to think about the direction you would like to see your family proceed. It doesn’t always need to focus on fitness or health. Financial fitness should be an important part of your family’s goals, and an excellent opportunity to show your children how to get on the right track with money early in life. There are some great ideas to get you started on pg. 7!

January is also the time we turn our attention to education. Many local schools have started accepting applications and opening their doors for parents to tour the school and meet the teachers. We’re barely halfway through the school year, but this is the time to start thinking about next year’s education options! There are new and exciting opportunities happening this year in Wilmington! Check out our guide on pg. 16 for more information on schools for the upcoming year.

I’m not sure if Wilmington will see any snow this year, but that has never stopped us from finding a little winter fun around town. On January 5th, 2:30pm at Pleasure Island Library, bring the kids for a Snow Day to play in snow made by a snow machine! On the 11th, 11am at the Downtown Main Library you can bring the kids for a little Snow Play activity day! Enjoy stories, simple crafts, and learn all about snow and winter weather. Make sure you pre register at www.nhclibrary.org.
January is also a good time to experiment with winter gardening activities for children. This is a good time to teach them all about sprouting, sunlight and water, and even kitchen recycling. Check out the ideas on www.gardeningknowhow.com to see how you can grow a complete collection of houseplants with only kitchen garbage as the source. One idea, is to start an avocado tree by sticking four toothpicks around the perimeter of the seed and suspending it in a glass of water with the round end down. Change the water every two days until roots form and start to fill the grass. Plant the growing seed and let it go, but watch out! They grow fast. You can also Create a leafy garden by placing the tops from carrots, beets, and onions, as well as the bottoms of celery, on dishes of clear water. Keep the tops watered each day and place the dish in a sunny window. You’ll see a small leafy forest growing within a week or so.
Did you get rid of your Christmas Tree yet? If you want to recycle your tree, New Hanover County residents may begin dropping off their used Christmas trees, during daylight hours, starting Dec. 26 at: • Home Depot, 5511 Carolina Beach Road (Monkey Junction) • Ogden Park (near the baseball fields), 225 Ogden Park Drive • New Hanover County Landfill, 5210 US Highway 421 North Recycling of Christmas trees will continue through the month of January. They ask that you remove all decorations & lights prior to drop off.
Don’t forget the next holiday is coming soon! January 16th is Martin Luther King Day. In Wilmington we celebrate starting at 11am downtown with the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Parade full of music and fun! Email mlkparade@aol.com for more information.

Moonjar Moneybox and Conversations To Go The Moonjar Moneybox is a new take on an old-fashioned piggy bank. The Moonjar is divided into three colorful containers labeled Save, Spend, and Share. It teaches children how to portion out their money so no container is left empty. Conversations to Go goes well with this as a way to get the whole family talking about the sometimes uncomfortable subject of money. Put the often controversial topic of money right on the table and see what happens as you share your opinions and describe your dreams. I have teenagers and we found the questions about wealth, thrift and luck an interesting way to learn more about each other. The Classic Moonjar Moneybox can be found at www.moonjar.com.

GROWING UP ONLINE
News that’s Worth Sharing By Carolyn Jabs
H
ow do you make a good decision or form a sound opinion? For most adults, the answer is obvious. Find the best information you can from sources that have proved themselves to be reliable in the past. For young people, things may not be as clear. By age 18, it’s estimated that 88% get much of their news from what’s shared on Facebook and other social media. Unfortunately, many kids aren’t able to evaluate what they find according to a highly publicized study from researchers at Stanford University. “Many assume that because young people are fluent in social media they are equally savvy about what they find there,” notes Professor Sam Wineburg, lead author of the report. “Our work shows the opposite.” Middle schoolers didn’t understand the difference between reported news and “sponsored content.” High school students assumed that an unattributed photo proved the truth of a story. And college students couldn’t detect the bias in a tweet. So what should parents do? Social media means that children—and adults--are becoming information sources for each other, so we need to take on some of the tasks that used to be done by editors. Start by talking to your children about what deserves to be shared online. Point out that false and biased information comes from many sources—deceptive advertising, satirical websites or organizations with an agenda. And then there’s “click bait”—tidbits so astonishing, outrageous or implausible that people click and share without thinking. These socalled stories are created simply to generate revenue. The more clicks, the more revenue. Anyone who shares one of these items is essentially letting an unscrupulous person make money off them and their friends. No one, including kids, likes to be duped by bad information. To help your child develop the savvy to evaluate what he or she finds online, talk regularly about how important it is to be skeptical and ask the following questions:
Is it worth reading? According to a study at Columbia University, 59 percent of links shared on Twitter have never actually been clicked. Kids show respect for their friends by sharing only things that they were willing to read or watch. Fake news sites in particular count on mindless sharing to make more money.
Who stands behind it? Encourage kids to track stories back to the website where they originated. What’s the purpose of the website? How are they funded? How do they pay contributors or staff? Are they trying to sell a product or promote an agenda? To answer these questions, kids may need to do a little detective work. Check the “About Us” page and scroll down the home page to find out who owns the copyright to the material.

Look at the URL. Some fake news sites reel in the unsuspecting with addresses that are deceptively close to legitimate sites. Point out extensions—.gov is a government agency, .edu is colleges and universities and .ru is a site that originates in Russia. (A complete extension list is available at Webopedia, tinyurl.com/48t5r). Lists of sites that play fast and loose with the facts are available from Snopes, a website that has been debunking Internet hoaxes for a long time). Another website, realorsatire. com allows you to plug in URL’s to find out whether an article comes from a fake or biased website. What’s the source? Help children understand sources by talking about who they trust at school. Some kids are genuine authorities in different areas—they know the stats for the sports team or can tell you when assignments are due. Others have a reputation for spreading rumors or even telling lies. The same thing is true online. A story is worth sharing only if it comes from reliable sources. The sources should be named and, in most cases, there should be more than one. They should be people who are qualified to have an opinion because they’ve studied the topic, done research, or have relevant experience.
Can the story be confirmed? Anyone can say anything online. Teach kids to Google stories and, for that matter, authors to find out whether anyone else finds them credible. A story that appears in one place or is based on a single tweet should be discounted. You can also point older kids to websites that help differentiate good information from bogus claims. Healthnewsreview.org evaluates stories about medical research. Politifact. com and Factcheck.org try to verify claims by politicians. Tineye.com helps users track down photographs to see if they’ve been manipulated. What’s the tone? Many online stories are designed to trigger strong feelings such as fear, anger or even hatred. Encourage your child to pay attention to words that manipulate or inflame emotions. Point out that people should be especially careful about sharing stories of this kind. The question should always be: will sharing this make the world a better place? v Carolyn Jabs, M.A., has been writing Growing Up Online for ten year. She is also the author of Cooperative Wisdom: Bringing People Together When Things Fall Apart, a book that describes a highly effective way to address conflict in families, schools and communities. RAISING FINANCIALLY FIT KIDS By Kerrie McLoughlin
W
hen I was a kid I thought that just because there were checks in my parents’ checkbook, there was plenty of money in the bank. How many kids these days think whipping out a credit card is the way to pay for items – any items – no matter the cost? As parents, we have a special opportunity to teach our kids about money … and how they can handle it responsibly so they stay out of debt down the line and know how to save for their future needs and wants.
Saving money. The elementary-age crowd is eager to soak up information about money, as they are tiny consumers. Start with a simple piggy bank for very young kids and teach about saving money in the piggy bank until they have saved enough money to buy something special. For preschoolers, this may be a small toy. For older kids, they may keep their saved money in a wallet and eventually spend it on something like a nice doll outfit, a LEGO set or a Nerf gun. This process teaches great lessons about saving for the future, giving to charity and holding onto some money for fun. Go out and see it. A field trip to a bank or credit union is a great way for kids to get a feel for how money moves through the system. They also learn about concepts such as interest, loans, debit versus credit cards, among other things. Often, they can even bring their change to process in a coin machine to turn into paper money. This is a good opportunity to have your children open up a savings account. Teach them that savings is a special kind of money that is only taken out for emergencies and is ideally saved for the future (college, a wedding, starting a business, a car, etc.).
Let them watch you. Older kids can benefit greatly by watching you balance your checkbook on a monthly basis, if you still do it that way, and they can even help out with supervision. Much banking is done online these days, but it’s still important to keep up with accounts, and your kids need to know that, also. Helping you with the monthly budget set-up and subsequent bill-paying process is also something most kids don’t get to see. Budgeting is such an important tool in avoiding debt that is imperative we teach this to our children when they are young! The site MomsBudget.com has some fun budgeting and allowance printables for kids that come in different colors. Lead by example. Obviously you need to practice what you preach as far as financial matters go or your kids just won’t grasp what you’re trying to teach them. If you’re telling them to give one-third of their allowance to charity but you don’t give a cent, what do they take away from that? If you tell them debt is bad but dig the credit card out of your file cabinet when a “great deal” on a massive-screen TV comes into play, your kids won’t learn about saving for items they really want. v Kerrie McLoughlin is the homeschooling mom of five financially savvy kids and shares their journey at FrugaliciousFamilyFun.com.

MEET THE EXPERT
Families That Play Together Stay Together
S
tatistics prove that family workouts have a positive impact on kids! It’s a great way for parents to teach their kids the importance of healthy living at a young age! This is the perfect time to start a brand new tradition, and your local YMCA is here to support you.
The Center for Disease Control and Prevention states that adults need at least 2.5 hours of moderate-intensity aerobic activity weekly and children & adolescents need 60+ minutes or more of physical activity daily. Busy schedules mean less time for exercise, but remember: families that play together stay together! The Y invites families to make lifestyle changes through exercise. Lori Campbell, Healthy Living Engagement Coordinator, says, “When younger children are exposed to exercise, they’re more likely to be healthy later in life.” We offer kids and family group exercise classes including Zumba, yoga, and boot camp. Older children can utilize the Express Y’s cardio and strength equipment after completing an orientation to learn safe and proper techniques. For your younger children, the Y offers drop-in childcare. Your family’s health is so important to us that our youth and childcare programs comply with Healthy Eating and Physical Activity (HEPA) standards and consistently focus on wellness. Visit us at www.wilmingtonfamilyymca.org and make it a family affair!

N
ew Year’s resolutions have become heavily commercialized. Messages coming from all directions would have you believe you are falling short as an acceptable human being in a multitude of ways. You are too poor, too unfit, too uneducated, too lonely, too busy, too selfish, too boring. You name it and you need to change it, preferably starting on January 1st. But unless parents are clear that they are enough as they are, you risk passing this annual habit of selfrecrimination on to your children and their future children. This year, resist external messages designed to make you and your family feel inadequate and flip New Year’s resolutions on their heads. Resolve to no longer let an annual holiday undermine your family’s sense of wholeness and worth. Resolution comes from the word resolve, meaning to make a decision or determination. This January 1st, why not become determined to resist self-criticism altogether? Take some time over the New Year transition to assess everything you enjoy. Instead, start discussing these topics over the holidays and, as the New Year approaches, watch the never-good-enough season transform into the joyful ringing in of the New Year every family craves.
Express feelings of joy. Have a deeper conversation about choices you made last year that brought you joy. What were the smartest decisions you made from your perspective? How did these positive choices make you feel? Would you make these same choices again? One of the best ways to milk more joy out of last year is to spend time discussing last year’s happiest moments before the New Year rolls in. Imagine next year as even more joyful. Ask each family member to make up a story about what an even more joyful year would look like. They can make the story as ambitious or inspired as they like. For example, maybe one family member wants to get admitted to a college of her choice while another simply wants to maintain a long-time enjoyable activity. Remain nonjudgmental. Joy is not a competition and each person’s joy is unique to them.
Affirm each other’s visions. After everyone has shared, family members will feel motivated to help each other. First affirm the validity of each family member’s dream. Make sure everyone feels supported by each other. Stressing teamwork in achieving shared individual goals can help reduce sibling rivalry. You are the creator of your family traditions; you don’t have to go along with the crowd. So celebrate the New Year in positive, constructive ways that build family members up, rather than a negative, critical ways that tear family members down. When you teach your family members to use joy as a touchstone for making choices this year and every year, you give them the keys to creating personal satisfaction in their lives and you get to watch your family grow closer than ever every year. v Author, journalist, and writing coach Christina Katz strives to live a joy-centric life, despite whatever else is going on in the world. She knows there is nothing more important to pass along to future generations.

The preschool years are made for making first friendships, creative expression, exciting discoveries, being loud and exuberant, not sitting still for a single minute, being full of movement, running, climbing, jumping, dancing, singing, laughter, silliness and fun. With preschool age children it is the process not the product that is most important in early learning. They only get one Childhood and we believe in celebrating it! AN ADVENTUROUS APPROACH TO EDUCATION:
Exploring Learning Styles To Enrich Your Child’s Life By Christina Katz
I
dentifying prominent learning styles in children is crucial in helping them identify their strengths and overcome their weaknesses as they progress into a more diverse spectrum of courses grade after grade. We often needlessly separate creativity from learning. But when parents help children understand their dominant learning styles, they can both use the knowledge to improve a child’s experiences, not only in school, but also in life.
Visual Draw pictures, doodle or color. List both sides of an argument. Draw the shape of your idea or consult a chart or a graph. Make a lesson into a comic strip. Research topics on Pinterest with an eye out for colorful infographics.

Auditory Use music in the background while learning. Read work out loud into a recorder or to the dog. Listen to lectures or stories in audio format. Listen to the opinions of others to help sharpen your point of view. Enjoy discussion, dialogue and debating.
Kinesthetic Physically act out ideas you are trying to understand. Play all the parts. Memorize information while in you are in motion. Engage in pantomime or improv. Teach other students what you’ve learned. Use your whole body for learning as with dance or theater.
Tactile Build an argument the way you would build a log cabin. Create a 3-d visual representation of lessons. Trace words or images to help you study. Watch video demonstrations for greater understanding.
Logical
Verbal
Notice patterns in whatever you are studying. Classify or categorize things. Use if/then or if/when statements. Use examples, stats, and research. Appreciate timelines, diagram, and flowcharts. v
Write out thoughts and rewrite thoughts to clarify what you think. Talk through your thoughts with another person. Build an argument on an opinion you feel strongly about. Play with acronyms (make up a story using every letter in one word as the first letter in a part of the story).
Author, journalist and writing coach Christina Katz loves to take a creative approach to learning and a learning approach to creativity. She can increase her productivity quite a bit by paying better attention to flexing her dominant learning styles.

FIT FAMILY
YOUR HEALTH
FAMILY FITNESS, AGE BY AGE By Malia Jacobson
C
hildhood may seem to move at a faster pace these days, but children don’t. New research from the American Heart Association shows that today’s children are slower and less fit than their parents were: modern kids take about 90 seconds longer to run a mile than their predecessors did 30 years ago, and children’s cardiovascular fitness has dropped 5 percent per decade since 1975. You can reverse this troubling trend at home, though. These family fitness tactics for kids of every age will help your brood embrace better health, improved energy, and more fun.
TODDLER-PRESCHOOL YEARS 2-5: Family Flex The good news: toddlers usually get plenty of exercise, says Beverly J. Allen, Ph.D., professor of Physical Education and Recreation and North Carolina Central University in Durham, North Carolina. “Children this age are very active and get the exercise they need from running, jumping, climbing, rolling, bending, pulling, pushing, and dancing.” Help preschool-age kids get physical by playing tag together, wrestling, and asking kids to put away toys one at a time or ferry items up and down stairs. But don’t encourage copycat workouts—very young kids shouldn’t follow along with their certain grown-up exercises. Young children simply aren’t ready for high repetition, high intensity workouts like jogging or interval training.
ELEMENTARY YEARS 6-12: Unsportsmanlike Conduct For kids who like sports, the elementary years bring a whirlwind of new opportunities to stay active, from soccer to softball. But less athletic kids may begin to shirk exercise, particularly if they feel inept at sports. Fortunately, competitive sports play isn’t the only way kids can get needed exercise, says Allen. Parents can encourage kids of all stripes—sports lovers and sports avoiders alike—to get enough exercise by establishing a regular family outing, like ice-skating, swimming, or a long outdoor walk, visiting parks and public spaces where kids can be active, and exploring less competitive physical pursuits like biking, skateboarding, and gymnastics. Whatever pastimes kids gravitate toward, it’s important for parents to model that physical activity is enjoyable.
TEEN YEARS 13-18: Safe Shred Trend-loving teens may hop on the latest fitness bandwagon to attain a “shredded” (teen-speak for well-defined or muscular) physique. But high intensity workouts like CrossFit and P90x aren’t suited for teenagers. CrossFit utilizes many Olympic-style lifts that are extremely technical and require high levels of joint mobility and stability. These technical lifts take several weeks to teach in order to perform safely and effectively. Sport injuries are on the rise in children and teenagers, something experts attribute to early sport specialization and teens with still-growing bodies performing too many repetitions—something CrossFit may encourage. Parents of young fitness enthusiasts should seek trainers that are certified in youth fitness. v Malia Jacobson is a nationally published health and parenting journalist and mom of three. Her latest book is Sleep Tight, Every Night: Helping Toddlers and Preschoolers Sleep Well Without Tears, Tricks, or Tirades.

Get Fit with Your Family This Year J’nelle Ruscetti, PA-C, of Wilmington Health, has initiated an evidence-based approach to addressing the childhood weight problem and has begun using it in her practice. It is an eight-week family plan, designed to not only treat children who are currently at an unhealthy weight but also to help prevent children from becoming an unhealthy weight. The class meets weekly for presentations on various topics relating to childhood obesity. The program involves playing interactive games with the families, exercising as a group, and giving different challenges to the families for the upcoming week. Each week the exercises and the challenges become a little more difficult. They hope that by partnering with the YMCA together they can make a bigger impact in the community.
