“I
f you are lucky enough to find a way of life you love, you have to find the courage to live it.” — John Irving. This is my mantra for March and the quote I will use to encourage my family as we get closer to the end of the school year, big choices, and a world of opportunities. This idea of luck and courage relate to a couple of important days this month. St. Patrick’s Day is on the 17th, and although I welcome good luck on this day, I want to teach my children that your “luck” improves the harder you work. Luck can also be about perspective. What might seem lucky for one person, might be the opposite of what another person wants in life. Another important day this month is International Women’s Day on March 8th. Parents, use this opportunity to teach your children about courage and why it is important for girls to stand up for what they find important. An article on pg. 25 by Christina Katz, gives us all some important topics to share with our young girls to encourage them to be powerful, safe, and strong!

March is such a fun month full of exciting changes and warmer weather! For me, March is a time for a fresh start. Of course, with the first day of spring on March 20th, spring cleaning is usually on everyone’s minds. If you plan to delegate that chore to someone else, which I recommend, why not take this time to spring clean the clutter from your mind. Here are a few tips to get started: 1. Cultivate Quiet Time Meditation, prayer, hiking and yoga are excellent examples of external acts that promote internal reflection. If you’ve never tried meditation, give the Headspace app a try! 2. Give Up a Grudge - Releasing your grip on a gripe can free up emotional energy that you can then invest in other, more positive areas of your life. 3. Offer an Apology - If you feel unsettled about something you’ve said or done to another person, offer a sincere apology to clear the air.
Another fun holiday for March - St. Patrick’s Day! Always looking for a little good luck and fortune, so this day is perfect! I plan to celebrate downtown on March 11th starting at 11am with the St. Patrick’s Day Festival and Parade! Music, dancing and food is exactly the way to spend a Saturday with the family! Check out wilmingtonstpatricksdayfestival.com for a complete list of events.
Have you been thinking of adding a furry little addition to your family? National Puppy Day is March 23rd, and there are lots of little bundles of love that need rescued. Millions of unwanted puppies sit alone in the shelter every day. Many never make it out to enjoy a life of love and security. Please don’t buy a puppy from a pet store, which only supports puppy mills. If your family is looking for a way to show some puppy appreciation, but you are not able to adopt a pet of your own, Paws Place in Winnabow is always looking for volunteer and donations. Visit www. pawsplace.org/how-to-help/volunteer to see how you can help.
Hey moms! Did you know we have our very own networking group right here in Wilmington? Housewives in the City is a social media and networking group currently in 36 major cities across the country and growing! They host free monthly girls night out events and the next one will be on March 21st, 6pm at Cape Fear Seafood Company in Porters Neck. It’s FREE to attend, but please register your ticket via Eventbrite. Vendors will be doing giveaways and raffles all night! Wilmington Housewives in the City connect women to local businesses by creating a fun environment for women to enjoy themselves, connect with others all while enjoying great food, drinks, networking and doing some shopping. Keep up with this group by following their Facebook page or visiting their website www.housewivesinthecity.com. Have a tip, lead, or just an interesting bit of news to share? I want to hear all about it! Send me an email to danielle.wilmingtonparent@gmail.com.

Insect Lore: Butterflies Teach your little (and big) ones all about the beginning of Spring by giving them the gift of witnessing the wonder of the butterfly life cycle. Insect Lore is a company that creates butterfly habitats that allow children to see a caterpillar’s transition as it grows, changes into a chrysalis and finally emerges as a beautiful butterfly! Kids can enjoy their butterfly friends for a few days and then get to experience the excitement of letting them go to continue the amazing life cycle. This is fascinating for older kids too! I have two teenagers that loved seeing the butterflies thrive while in their care, and the release was amazing! Kits are available at www.insectlore.com.

ILLUMY Sleep and Wake Mask Launching in March 2017, this innovative product helps even the lightest sleeper drift into relaxation and sleep. I was hesitant with my expectations of a sleep mask. Typically I do not like having something on my face while I sleep. However, this was very comfortable! Blocking out all light, this mask helps you sleep. With gentle pulsing light, it slows down your fast-paced mind so you can fall asleep, blocking out all light, it helps you stay asleep. The fading sunset focuses your mind on naturally falling asleep and tells your body it’s time for rest. The bright blue sunrise not only has you waking up fully rested, but it’s a calming alarm that morning has arrived. www.soundoasis.com v

What Does that Mean? How to Translate Texts By Carolyn Jabs
M
ost parents know that LOL means Laughing Out Loud. You may even know that 420 refers to marijuana. But you may not know that 53X means sex. That worries Brian Bason, CEO at Bark, a new monitoring app. Their website includes a list of popular texting slang terms (tinyurl.com/gqp9tex). For $9.99 a month, they promise to alert parents when kids text something risky. Of course, slang is nothing new. Parents have been scrambling to keep up with it for generations. Using freshly minted words that adults won’t understand appeals to kids for two reasons. First, it helps kids establish and reinforce a social identity. People who understand the same secret language are likely to be part of the same tribe. Slang establishes an in group that understands and out group that seems hopelessly out of touch. Second, slang allows kids to fly under adult radar, talking about things that might be forbidden if the adults could translate what they were saying. Siblings often develop this kind of secret language—winks and whispers and even special words that let them communicate about things that Mom and Dad might not appreciate. Messaging, of course, has added a new dimension to all of this. Keyboards are tiny. Attention spans are short. Acronyms and emojis make it possible to crowd a lot of information into a small space. As a result, messages have become more and more cryptic and harder for parents to decipher. Much of the new slang being used online is harmless and even creative. Some of the better acronyms enter the language. Pretty much everyone knows about FOMO (Fear of Missing Out), IRL (In Real Life) and BRB (Be Right Back). Other very useful acronyms include JSYK (Just so You Know), SMH (Shaking My Head), TL;DR (Too Long; Didn’t Read) and YOLO (You Only Live Once). Still, parents need to be alert. Kids can get into trouble with texting, and the kinds of speech that would be unacceptable IRL should also be off limits in text. In particular, parents will want to monitor in these areas:
Hate. Texting and social media are often used to bully and abuse other people because of their gender, race, ethnic origin or disabilities. Be clear with your child. A slur is a slur, and you won’t tolerate abusive language in any setting.
Bad Language. If you don’t want your child to say the F word, you will
Substances. Slang has always been part of drug and alcohol culture. Us-
probably want to discourage the use of acronyms like WTF or AF. Even NSS may not be acceptable. The best way to know what an acronym means is to ask the child who used it. The security company, McAfee, also produces a list of common terms, conveniently subdivided into categories for drugs, sex and bullying (tinyurl.com/hpb8qu2). Wiktionary also has a long list of acronyms in an Appendix (tinyurl.com/mab7snn). Another way to educate yourself is to visit databases that try to keep up with slang as it’s created. Here are several of the most complete collections: • Slangit.com is a family friendly website (they also have free apps for Iphone and Android). When you enter a slang term, you get a clean and accurate definition. They also have a daily quiz question that might be a conversation starter at the dinner table. • Noslang.com has been keeping track of net slang since 2005. They offer a text slang translator and a reverse translator that turns English phrases into acronyms. In their articles section, there’s a helpful essay called “What Every Parent Should Know.” • Internet slang.com also allows parents to look up acronyms. Their Trending Terms section helps parents zero in current terminology. • Acronymsandslang.com has an enormous list of acronyms, organized into categories. With over 20,000 entries in the Internet category, they are likely to supply an explanation for almost any acronym. • The Urban Dictionary also has a very complete list of slang of all kinds. The definitions are crowd-sourced so they are generally irreverent and often obscene. The site is not suitable for children, but may be useful to parents because it’s regularly updated by its users. Of course, trying to keep up with adolescent slang is like playing Whack-a-mole. As soon as a term is widely understood by adults, it loses its value for kids and they will move on. That’s why parents have to reinforce that idea that kids shouldn’t say anything online that they would say IRL (in real life). With that in mind, you might also want to introduce a conscience-stimulating acronym of your own – WWGmaS (What Would Grandma Say?) v
ing coded language is a way to evade legal authorities as well as parents. Keeping up with the current terminology isn’t easy, especially since it often varies from place to place. Talk to other parents and even school counselors who often know the latest lingo. And remember that drug terms sometimes have more than one meaning. Dabbing, for example, is both a dance craze and a way to use cannabis. Lit can mean getting high or simply having a good time.
Carolyn Jabs, M.A., has been writing about families and technology for over twenty years. She is also the author of Cooperative Wisdom: Bringing People Together When Things Fall Apart, a book that describes a highly effective way to address conflict in families, schools and communities. Available at Amazon and cooperativewisdom.org.
Sex. Most teens seem to have gotten the message that sending nude photos isn’t a good idea. That doesn’t mean teens aren’t texting about 53X. Even emojis may have a double meaning – an eggplant can stand in for male genitals; a peach may refer to someone’s backside. It’s perfectly natural, of course, for young people to take an interest in sex, but parents need to chaperone, watching for behavior that is too adult or partners who may be predatory.

WHEN KIDS REJECT SPORTS:
Keeping Kids Active When They Avoid Team Sports
T
By Sarah Lyons
eam sports are a great way to keep kids active but not all kids enjoy playing them. When kids avoid team sports, parents look for other ways their children can continue to be healthy and active. How can you get your kids moving around when they aren’t part of a sports team?
Encourage lifelong activities Choose activities that have the potential for lifelong enjoyment such as biking, swimming, walking, and hiking. Encourage everyone to go on a walk or bike ride together, hike in a local park, or spend the day at the pool. Get a step counter for each family member and create a friendly competition to see who can get the most steps.
Individual sports Just because your child does not enjoy team sports does not mean they may not enjoy an individual sport. Gymnastics, swimming, track and field, wrestling, diving, archery, golf, or weight lifting are all good examples of individual sports where children compete against themselves.
Dance and theater Turn on the music and have a family dance party. There is nothing like a great song to get a body moving. Dancing is fun and it’s great exercise too. Some children may also enjoy trying dance classes, baton twirling, or cheerleading. All of these are a great source of exercise. If your child is drawn to music and theater get them involved in a theater production in school or your community.
Find a new hobby Encourage your child to find a hobby that encourages movement and activity such as skateboarding, fishing, bowling, and woodworking. If the child is doing something they enjoy they won’t even notice they are also exercising.
Play Leisure sports can be more fun for kids that don’t care for team sports because they are less competitive and therefore have less pressure to perform at a higher level. Encouraging kids to play gets them active. Playing frisbee or frisbee golf, tag, catch, shooting hoops, and duck duck goose all require kids to run around. While team sports have many benefits, they are not for everyone. Kids who do not enjoy team sports don’t have to be less active. With these tips, kids will enjoy an active lifestyle that can be maintained for a lifetime. v

ay camps come in all shapes and sizes, appealing to a range of interests and ages. Here’s how to find a camp that invests in your youngster by creating an unforgettable experience where they’ll meet new friends, gain self-confidence and learn new skills --all while giving you peace of mind.
Begin with basics. First determine your schedule needs. Some camps are only a few hours a day while others are structured to work well with a working parent’s schedule. Figure out if you’ll need to arrange before or after care. From there, seek a camp with “caring staff, fun programs and a dedication to the health and safety of the campers,” says DD Gass, a director of camps and school-age services for a faith-based community center.
Match the camp with your child’s interests. From computer coding to robotics and sports, day camps offer kids the opportunity to try all kinds of new activities. If your child isn’t interested in a camp that specializes in one activity, choose a more traditional camp that offers a wide range of activities throughout the session. “Make sure there’s a healthy balance between structure and choice,” says Jim Spearin, senior vice president of Youth Development for the YMCA.

Consider the culture. Ask for referrals from trusted family and friends.”Choose a camp that welcomes parents as partners in their experience,” Spearin says. “Parents should always feel welcome to come visit during camp. There should be planned activities for both parent and camper to enjoy together such as special events or campouts.” Seek qualified, organized staff. Camp employees should be licensed, certified and trained in sexual/child abuse prevention, first aid and CPR. Find out how camp leaders are supervised and how they plan for emergencies, including natural disasters, intruders and other threats. Also consider the child-to-staff ratio. Will your child feel lost in a group that’s too big, even if it meets state criteria? “It’s vitally important for staff to have child development knowledge and experience to ensure that appropriate, engaging and enriching activities are offered,” says Katrina Ball, a childcare resource and referral director.
Try it before you buy. Attend a camp expo or camp fair to find out what options exist in the area. Some organizations feature their own camp fairs and mini-camps during the spring for families to try. “As a parent you know your child best and what program would be best for them. Trust your instincts,” Ball says. Calm butterflies. Many youngsters have a hard time adjusting to new situations and people and may feel scared or intimidated. Include them in the process of choosing a camp. Discuss the schedule of activities and what a typical day will look like. “Children can help pack their lunch (if needed) and pack their backpack with the items they’ll need for camp. This helps them know what they have in their backpack and know what they will need to bring home,” Gass says. Find out if one of your child’s friends would like to attend the camp with him. Attending orientations, visiting the camp site and meeting the staff prior to the beginning of camp can also help reduce any pre-camp jitters. v Freelance journalist, Christa Melnyk Hines and her husband are the parents of two happy day campers. Christa’s latest book is Happy, Healthy & Hyperconnected: Raise a Thoughtful Communicator in a Digital World.

GIRL POWER:
6 Ways to Help Your Daughter Stay Safe and Strong By Christina Katz
910-795-2511 www.DrEggDental.com Mayfaire Town Center
M
arch 8 is International Women’s Day, a global celebration of the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. In recent years, it’s become clear that the advancement of women’s rights can recede if we are not persistent, insistent, and assertive in championing them. So why not take the opportunity to have some important and inspiring conversations with your daughters? Here are some talking points to get your started.
1. Expect equality. Equality is not only for women and girls; it’s for every member of a healthy society. So talk to your daughter about parity and fairness. Ask her if she has gotten the impression that opportunities that should be available to her are not. Ask if she thinks the same opportunities that are available to her are accessible to others. Challenge her to think. 2. Treasure your body. Talk to your daughter about her body. Does she love it? Does she hate it? Does she wish it were different? How are you modeling self-love and self-care for your body? Work together to create more body awareness and acceptance in your family. 3. Be period positive. Ask your daughter how she feels about being female. Does she need help managing her menstrual cycles and moods? Talk to her about what has been helpful for you. If there are consistent challenges or discomforts, seek assistance through traditional or alternative medicines until they are resolved. 4. Speak up and be heard. If you are always speaking on your child’s behalf, she is not going to learn to speak up for herself. So, next time she needs to straighten something out with a friend, teacher, or coach, why not talk to her about it and then let her do it herself? Ask how she did afterwards and offer support.
Little mouths are a big deal.

Recycle Now recycle me after the game!
5. Dress to express, not seduce. Girls may seek to express themselves and their burgeoning sexuality through their clothing, but that doesn’t mean that they have to flash their assets all the time as if they were up for auction. Explain to your daughter that she will be more likely to draw quality attention if she can keep her assets off continual display. Teach her to walk tall and proud as someone who knows she is worth more than her physical appearance.
6. Support sisterhood. “Never disrespect a sister” is a good policy. In any situation where a girl is being picked on, singled out, or mistreated, prep your daughter to stick up for the other girl, rather than ignore the situation. Social instincts may discourage her from speaking out, but teach her to be brave and do it anyway. v Author, journalist, and writing coach Christina Katz is not a perfect mother. But she has accepted the mission to talk to her daughter about tricky topics before her girl turns 18-no matter how uncomfortable it is to broach any subject.

YOUR HEALTH
Benefits of Intermittent Fasting
I
ntermittent fasting is currently one of the world’s most popular health and fitness trends. People are using it to lose weight, improve health and simplify their healthy lifestyle. Many studies show that it can have powerful effects on your body and brain, and may even help you live longer. Intermittent fasting is an eating pattern where you cycle between periods of eating and fasting. Numerous studies show that it can have powerful benefits for your body and brain.
Intermittent Fasting Changes The Function of Cells, Genes and Hormones When you don’t eat for a while, several things happen in your body. For example, your body initiates important cellular repair processes and changes hormone levels to make stored body fat more accessible. Here are some of the changes that occur in your body during fasting: Insulin levels: Blood levels of insulin drop significantly, which facilitates fat burning. Human growth hormone: The blood levels of growth hormone may increase as much as 5-fold. Higher levels of this hormone facilitate fat burning and muscle gain, and have numerous other benefits. Cellular repair: The body induces important cellular repair processes, such as removing waste material from cells.
Gene expression: There are beneficial changes in several genes and molecules related to longevity and protection against disease. Many of the benefits of intermittent fasting are related to these changes in hormones, gene expression and function of cells.
Fasting Methods Intermittent fasting has been very popular for many years and several different methods have been used. All of them involve splitting the day or week into “eating periods” and “fasting periods.” During the fasting periods, you eat either very little or nothing at all. These are the most popular methods: The 16/8 Method: Also called the Leangains protocol, it involves skipping breakfast and restricting your daily eating period to 8 hours, for example from 1 pm to 9 pm. Then you “fast” for 16 hours in between. Eat-Stop-Eat: This involves fasting for 24 hours, once or twice a week, for example by not eating from dinner one day until dinner the next day. The 5:2 Diet: On two non-consecutive days of the week, only eat 500600 calories. Eat normally the other 5 days. By making you eat fewer calories, all of these methods should help you lose weight as long as you don’t compensate by eating much more during the eating periods. Source: www.authoritynutrition.com

FIT FAMILY
Best BMI apps Body mass index, or BMI, is a way to estimate whether a person is at a healthy weight for his or her height. BMI can occasionally be misleading. The measure often mistakenly classifies heavily muscled athletes as obese, and it can underestimate body fat in elderly or ill people who have lost muscle mass. The best apps offer both a BMI calculator and a way to record changes in your BMI over time. Fitter Fitness Calculator. Fitter rises to the top because it includes not only a BMI calculator, but also widgets to estimate your basal metabolic rate, body fat based on hip and forearm measurements, and waist-to-hip ratio. BMI Calculator by Data Supply. This app is simply what it says it is: an easy-to-use BMI Calculator. You can enter your height in feet and inches, centimeters, or just inches; and your weight in kilograms or pounds, and the app does the rest. A color-coded graph tracks BMI over time.

New Technical High School will Offer Unique Educational Opportunities Beginning this August, students in New Hanover and Pender counties will have a new choice-based public high school option, SEA-TECH. The new Southeast Area Technical High School (SEA-TECH), is the result of a partnership between New Hanover County Schools, Pender County Schools, and Cape Fear Community College (CFCC). Students at SEA-TECH will earn a traditional high school diploma as well as have no-cost access to career and technical education based credentials and certifications offered by CFCC. Students will be able to choose from several career areas and will earn college credits while simultaneously completing their high school requirements. After graduation, SEA-TECH students will have the option to enter the workforce at an advanced level or to further their educations. This unique approach to high school offers project based, hands-on workforce training while still providing students with a traditional high school experience. Unlike other early college programs which offer dual-enrollment, SEA-TECH students will be able to participate in athletics and extracurricular activities at their neighborhood high school. The blend of traditional academics and job-ready skills training aims to strengthen the local workforce pipeline to fill job gaps in areas like health and public services, computer and network engineering, advanced manufacturing, residential and commercial construction, and hospitality, among others. For the first two years, SEA-TECH will be located at CFCC’s North Campus in Castle Hayne. Space in SEA-TECH’s first freshmen class is limited, and the school will only be accepting rising ninth graders this year. Students who are interested in attending SEA-TECH are required to submit an application, which can be accessed at www.nhcs.net/seatech. For more information, contact SEA-TECH program coordinator, Duke Wallin, at ctehsinfo@nhcs.net.
