EDITOR’S NOTE

I

Wilmington Pediatric Dentistry

t’s tough being a teen, but as some of us know, it is equally as tough to be a parent of a teen. I write this today as I have just sent my 16 year old off to live in Durham for her last two years of high school, and in two days I will send my 17 year old off to begin his college adventure. Just the other day we were all fighting about who will do the dishes, and next week I will have very few dishes left to worry about. This time goes so fast folks! Not to say we shouldn’t teach responsibility, but sometimes we have to keep life in perspective and enjoy every annoying, frustrating, wonderful moment. For all of us struggling through these wild tween and teen years, enjoy this issue of advice and support. September is the beginning of my favorite season. The temperatures are about to drop, and I will take advantage of every opportunity to be outside. I have compiled a list of festivals that will give you plenty of reason to get out, be social, and enjoy the laid back fall weather. If you are looking for ways to enjoy some colorful autumn leaves, you may have to drive a bit westward away from our beloved beach, but it will be worth the trip!

With the days now filled with school, it’s time to find ways for your family to have fun during the afternoons and weekends. Do you have any Harry Potter fans in your family? The 32nd Annual Cape Fear Literacy Council Gala: A Night of Magic at the Coastline Conference Center in downtown Wilmington, features a Harry Potter theme, plus live music with Machine Gun, dinner catered by Culinary Creations, silent auction, booze, and Hogwarts-inspired activities! The Cape Fear Literacy Council supports adults who are learning to read, write, speak english, and helps them prepare for an improved phase in their lives. You can help support their cause while enjoying a magical night on September 23rd from 6:30-11:30. Visit www.cfliteracy.org for ticket information.

If your kids missed out on all the fun at the Marine Science Center this summer, no worries! The fun and learning continue all year long at UNCW’s Center for Marine Science. They want to make sure all local families are aware of what they offer by hosting an Open House on September 23rd from 11am-3:30pm that features informational outdoor displays & activities, a food truck, tours, and more. Find out more at www.uncw.edu.

Don’t forget to enjoy some unscheduled time with your family. Although afterschool activities can be an important addition to a healthy, well-rounded childhood, everyone needs a little downtime. Keep these pointers in mind when planning your year: • Consider only one activity per season per child • Be willing to let your kid opt out • Realize that even the super active, social kid needs downtime • Consider your budget • Ignore pressure from competitive parents/family members • Do what works for your family

Besides, with a little free time your family can enjoy some of your own exciting and competitive events like the Cape Fear Highland Games! This is the 3rd year for this exhibition and it will be held on September 30th starting at 9am behind the IRS Building on Randall Dr. The games feature traditional Scottish events such as Caber Toss, Scottish Hammer Throw, Sheaf Toss, and Stone Put. Activities for the whole family include a stone of strength for anyone to attempt. The event also includes food vendors, a beer tent, and Scottish and traditional vendors. Check out the complete schedule at www.capefearhighlandgames.com.

For those of you who have kids that have long shown an interest in playing string instruments, the Wilmington Symphony Youth Orchestra is looking for new members. Auditions will be held on September 7th by appointment only at the Cultural Arts Building at UNCW. The Wilmington Symphony Youth Orchestra is conducted by Dr. Steven Errante and managed by Robert Norem. The Junior Strings is directed by Jane Tierney. Find out more about this opportunity at wsoyouth. blogspot.com. Have a tip, lead, or just an interesting bit of news to share? I want to hear all about it! PRODUCT REVIEW

Wall Pops As I prepare to send my kids off to college, I pour over dorm checklists online. Every single one suggests a whiteboard for roommates to exchange information during their busy days and nights. My kids took one look at the white board, and said “no way” Wall Pops are dry erase boards and art pieces designed by Jonathan Adler. This was much more acceptable, and stylish. Ours looks like a phone booth! The set includes a dry-erase marker and is repositionable and removable without leaving sticky residue behind. www.wallpops.com

Grommet Play Bulb As the night begins to get longer, I refuse to let that stop me from enjoying my deck. There are alot of solar powered light options, but the reason I like these solar powered garden lights is because this smart light takes it up a notch. You can choose colors (from an endless array), adjust brightness, and set effects— like flashing, fading, and pulsing—all from the app on your smart device. You can even sync multiple lights as a group to create a mini light show, or set them to start glowing when the sun goes down. www.thegrommet.com

Rise Buddy The rise of the healthy “junk” food, Rise Buddy offers a more healthy alternative for families with a thick, crunchy rice chip snack. Rise Buddy has a similar taste like a potato chip but it’s made with whole grain brown rice. I can not in good conscience send a bag of chips in my children’s lunch, but these are a solid substitute. There are quite a few flavors, Sea Salt, BBQ, Pizza, and Sour Cream & Onion. Can be purchased on Amazon.

Funny Bone Games Don’t let back to school craziness keep you from much needed family time. I always keep some board games on hand for a quick nighttime moment of fun. Here are 2 we just added to our stack. Whim is a word game where up to 6 players compete to find words that include the letters they choose for that round. Players write down words with letters appearing at either the beginning, middle or end of the word, as decided by a roll of the die. Akin is a party game where up to 4 other players race by using suction cups to connect cards that are related – or “akin” – to the card that is turned over during each round. v

GROWING UP ONLINE

ARE WE ADDICTED TO CELLPHONES? By Carolyn Jabs

H

ow much time did your kids spend with their cellphones yesterday? When was the last time you checked yours? If contemplating these questions makes you uncomfortable, you’re not alone. Cellphones dominate our lives in part because they are designed to do precisely that according to Tristran Harris, a tech entrepreneur who worked for a while as Product Ethicist at Google. He now runs TimeWellSpent, a non-profit that points out how cellphones and their apps hijack our attention. The group urges tech designers to take the equivalent of the Hippocratic Oath and encourages consumers to make more mindful decisions about when, how and where to use their phones. Harris isn’t the only expert concerned about cellphone overuse. Some researchers have noted that brains scans of people who spend a lot of time online are disconcertingly similar to those of people with substance abuse problems. In a recent NPR report, Dr. Anna Lembke, an assistant professor in addiction medicine at Stanford, noted that Internet use can follow a classic pattern—“intermittent to recreational use, then progresses into daily use, and then progresses into consequential use.” Here are a few consequences you may recognize in yourself or your kids: • Time - Devoting more and more time to cellphone activities, partly because the person loses track of time and partly because it takes longer to feel satisfied. • Obsession - Thinking about being online even when the person is offline. Failure to cut back despite resolutions. • Mood - Feeling anxious, restless, irritable or even angry when online activities are interrupted or when the person has to be offline. • Social - Withdrawal from friends and real life social activities. The feeling that online relationships are more significant and genuine. • Interference - Spending time online even when it interferes with other important activities including employment, schoolwork, chores, exercise, family time and sleep. • Deception - Lying to oneself or others about how much time is spent with the phone. For most people, of course, cellphone use doesn’t rise to the level of addiction. Still, many parents have the uneasy feeling that phones take too big a chunk of family life. In contemporary culture, total abstinence isn’t realistic for adults or teens but there are ways to become more deliberate about when and how we use our phones. Here are a few suggestions:

or Social forces you to think, even briefly, about whether you really want to engage in that activity.

3. Identify triggers. Addictive behavior often starts with uncomfortable feelings such as depression or anxiety. Talking about feelings helps children and adults recognize their emotions and make more conscious decisions about how to manage them. If a family member is upset because of something that happened at school or work, he or she may get temporary relief from playing a game or binge-watching YouTube. That’s not necessarily a problem—if the person eventually thinks through the basic problem and comes up with ideas about how to address it. Without that kind of emotional intelligence, kids and grownups may habitually turn to the phone simply to escape their feelings.

4. Customize notifications. The ding from a cellphone is like a slot machine. Most of the time, it’s meaningless but occasionally there’s a big payoff. Assign special ringtones to family members and other people so you won’t miss genuinely important messages. Then turn off notifications from everything else. As Harris points out that there will always be breaking news, urgent e-mails and fresh information on social media. You won’t know everything about everybody all the time, so put an end to FOMO (Fear of Missing Out.) Attention is valuable. Don’t squander it.

5. Create rich off-line lives. Seek out tech-free experiences that are rewarding for family members. Take every opportunity to be physically active, outdoors if possible. Ride bikes, take walks, play sports. Cultivate face to face social skills by giving children lots of opportunities to meet and interact with other people. Get to know neighbors. Join a faith community or other community organizations. Invite friends and extended family over for meals or game nights. Collect cellphones at the door.

ing on your phones. Some activities—games, social media, news—are designed to be endless. Others—gambling, shopping, looking at porn—are associated with off-line addictions. Identify activities that are productive and/or enjoyable. How much time should be allotted to each? Develop a budget that guides how you spend your online time. Use the timer on your phone--or ask other family members—to hold you accountable.

6. Get an alarm clock. Using a cellphone as an alarm makes it the last thing you see before you fall asleep and the first thing you check in the morning. It may even interrupt sleep with notifications that matter much less than being rested. Claim the luxury of thinking your own thoughts as you drift off to sleep. Take a little time in the morning to wake up fully before engaging with whatever is on your phone. Finally, appreciate what’s good about cellphones. Some researchers, for example, have noted that use of drugs and alcohol among teens has declined over the same period that smartphone use increased. They speculate that interactive media may satisfy adolescent cravings for independence, risk-taking and sensation seeking without the devastating consequences of other addictions. In other words, cellphones like so many other technologies, can make lives better or worse. It’s up to parents to pay attention to that uneasy feeling about phones, so we can gently take corrective actions that restore them to their proper place. v

2. Create an Essential Home Screen. Harris suggests sorting apps into three categories: Tools help you complete essential tasks—calendar, camera, etc. Bottomless Bowls are apps that encourage you to binge. Aspirations are things you’d like to do. Create a homescreen that includes ONLY indispensible tools and realistic aspirations. Hide other apps in folders where you won’t see seductive icons. Having a folder called News, Games

She is also the author of Cooperative Wisdom: Bringing People Together When Things Fall Apart, a book that describes a highly effective way to address conflict in families, schools and communities. HIGH SCHOOL’S FINAL YEAR:

SUPPORTING YOUR COLLEGE-BOUND CHILD Diane Turner Maller

R

eady or not, prepared or not, your child is set to begin the final, defining and transitory, senior year of high school. High school counselor Brooke Nova encourages parents to speak to several people about their careers and explore college campuses. Nova emphasizes that setting up overnight stays on college campuses “are free.”

Support without hovering. Your child needs your support during this process. Most students this age need help breaking down the projects and requirements into manageable bits. They need help managing deadlines and timelines.

Brainstorm a big list. The first list of colleges and universities should

than one of these presentations. I attended a multitude of them. Attend at least one with a friend, better yet; a friend who has already sent a child to college if this is your first. A second ear can help with sorting through the information overload. Check these sites for help with finances: www.college.gov and www.finaid.org. Also, use the Net Price Calculators on school websites to help decide if the school is affordable.

include a wide spectrum of choices from which to ultimately choose. Some of these choices should provide a stretch that challenges your child to reach further. Encourage your child to attend college presentations that are offered at the high school. Explore university websites together and separately. Your child will let you know when your presence over his or her shoulder is no longer required. You can compare notes later.

Discuss distance from home. How far away is your child comfortable living? Some students are fine going to the opposite side of the country while others prefer to stay close to home, where weekend visits are possible or perhaps even to live at home that first year. Make that essay shine. Parents, siblings, and friends can help with the editing process. In most cases, the final admissions or scholarship application is uploaded online. Take the time, however, to print out the various pieces and refine the wording. If ever there were a time for perfectionism, the time is when writing college and scholarship applications. Proofreading by multiple sets of eyes can add exponential value.

www.wilmingtonparent.com

Attend financial aid presentations. It is helpful to attend more

Accept the roller coaster. During my daughter’s senior year, sometimes she accepted gentle reminders, other times, she bristled at any suggestions. As a parent, I was continually walking that tight rope between supporting and hovering. I was almost grateful when she shut her bedroom door in my face so she could work on applications on her own. Later, when she took the envelope into her room to open privately in her own space, I held my breath, too. But the results were hers, not mine. Whatever the news, ceremonies that mark the end of high school for your child are rich with meaning and memories. v

FAMILY TRAVEL

FALL WEEKEND GETAWAYS

J

ust a short drive from the Southeast are some perfect fall getaways, complete with scenic fall foliage views, seasonal outdoor activities and much more.

Fall Colors by Car The Blue Ridge Parkway is a must-see scenic drive in the fall with an explosion of color as far as the eye can see. The highest point on the parkway is the Richland Balsam Overlook at 6,047 feet above sea level. Travelers can trek to the summit by foot via a 1.5-mile loop. The Waterrock Knob Parking Overlook provides another spectacular view, offering a four-state panorama of the Great Smoky Mountains. Leaf-seekers can also take the short hiking trail to the top of the knob to find even more breathtaking views. A natural phenomenon, “Shadow of the Bear,” is visible from midOctober through mid-November during the fall travel season. Visitors can head to Rhodes Big View Overlook off Highway 64 between 5:30-6:00 p.m. each evening for the best view of the sun setting behind Whiteside Mountain, casting a stunning shadow image of a black bear over the mountains’ fall colors. With more visitors each year than any other national park in the country, the popular Great Smoky Mountains National Park presents visitors with 520,000 acres to explore. The Oconaluftee Visitor Center in Cherokee, NC, and all entrances to the park, offer free admission, making this a budget-friendly bucket list travel experience, especially in the fall colors.

Fall Colors by Foot Known as the “Yosemite of the East,” Panthertown Valley is a hiker’s

paradise with more than 30 miles of backcountry trails and 12 waterfalls to discover along the way. The hiking trails offer rewarding views of the fall colors with stops overlooking valleys and 360-degree views of the stunning landscape coated in red, orange and yellow. Mountain bikers can also navigate the designated trails throughout Panthertown. Those looking for a challenge will also enjoy a hike at Pinnacle Park, which boasts 1,000 acres of natural landscape. The park features a sevenmile roundtrip hike with significant elevation gain and rocky terrain that peaks at Pinnacle Bald. The 270-degree view of the neighboring mountains and the valley where the town of Sylva is located are a sight to see in the fall splendor. Hikers can also trek along the trails on Whiteside Mountain, estimated to be one of the oldest mountains in the world. ole Parker’s 13 year old daughter, Asya, had just gotten off the phone with her best friend when she burst into tears. “When I asked her what was wrong, she didn’t want to tell me,” says the divorced dad of five. Parker, the owner of Divas in Defense, a company that offers self-defense classes to women of all ages, didn’t give up. Instead, he asked questions: Has your friend hurt herself? Is she depressed? Eventually, Asya revealed that her best friend was contemplating suicide because she was being bullied at school. Parker quickly called the girl’s parents, who soon found their daughter a therapist. “Then everything got better,” Parker says. Still, “Asya felt like she was abandoning her friend by telling me,” Parker says.

Teen Teams “Teens have so much loyalty and allegiance to their friends,” says Vicki Panaccione, PhD, author of What Kids Would Tell You…If Only You’d Ask! At the risk of being ostracized, “they don’t want to be the one to blow the whistle.” But when they find themselves privy to potentially dangerous information involving a peer, such as potential suicide, school violence, self-harm or an alarming use of drugs or alcohol, they should tell an adult. It could be you, another family member, a friend of the family, a school counselor or a priest, rabbi or minister. In potentially life-threatening situations, “the only responsibility teens have is to tell a grown-up,” Panaccione says. Then, you should let someone know, such as the at-risk teen’s parents or the school. “The guidance counselor can say ‘somebody told me’ to protect your teen’s privacy,” Panaccione says.

Safe Haven To help your teen feel comfortable coming to you when the going with friends gets tough, don’t count on empty phrases, such as, “You know our door is always open” to get your teen to open up. Instead, find the time to find out what’s going on in your teen’s life, in a general way. “You might say, for example, ‘I read about teens cutting themselves. Does that go on in your school?’” says Carleton Kendrick, a family therapist. Or, give your teen a moral dilemma, such as: What would you do if you thought a friend was truly contemplating suicide. Teens know the difference between “I got an F on the test. OMG! I’m going to kill myself” and “I’m going to kill myself next Wednesday at 2 PM.” By engaging teens in conversation and listening to their opinions when there’s no crisis, you’re more likely to build the trust necessary to become the confidante they need when there is one.

Rules of Engagement Don’t overpromise. “If your teen tells you something about a friend and you promise not to tell, then you can’t tell anybody,” Panaccione says. “If you hear that a kid is having sex or smoking a joint, keep it private.” But if the situation is life threatening, explain why you must do something. “You could say, for example, ‘I know you’re worried about your friend finding out that you’re the one who told, but how would you feel if she overdosed and died?’” Panaccione says. “I say to my teen clients: ‘I’d rather have somebody’s who is alive and pissed off at you than dead because you didn’t do anything to help.’” Then, explain exactly what you’re going to do with the information, such as call the school. In any event, when your teen outs a friend, try not to make judgmental comments, such as “She’s always been a mess!” No matter what’s going on, “teens don’t want you to not like their friends because of something they told you about them,” Panaccione says. v

The Tween Roller Coaster

P

arents may think that the real problems begin once their child begins high school, but middle school often sets the stage for how your child will handle their teen years. The tween years, previously dubbed pre-adolescence, are the years spanning the ages of 8-12. Although they include a small dot on our children’s timelines, they are emotional roller coaster years filled with more than most parents realize.

Stress Your child is probably more stressed than you think. In a survey of parents, only 2%-5% of them rated their child’s stress as extreme, while 14% of tweens (and 28% of teens) said that they worry “a lot.” Try to manage your child’s activities so that they’re not overloaded, make sure they have a little down time just to themselves. If you think your child is stressed, talk to him or encourage him to talk to another adult such as an aunt or uncle.

Prescription Drugs Prescription drugs are the drug of choice among tweens and young teens. They’re often easily accessible right at home. Talk to your child about the dangers of prescription and over-the-counter drugs. Protect your child by carefully monitoring all your own prescriptions, storing them securely, and getting rid of old, unneeded medicines right away. Seal old medicine in a plastic bag with something unpleasant, like kitty litter, and throw it in the trash.

GO THE EXTRA MILE for your children

Cutting Some young people cope with difficult emotions by “cutting” -- injuring themselves deliberately by cutting their wrists, thighs, or elsewhere on the body using razor blades, knives, or other implements. It’s more common among girls, but boys sometimes cut as well. If you notice unexplained scars or see that your tween is wearing unseasonable clothes that might conceal cuts, talk to your child. Cutting often requires professional help.

Talking About Dating and Sex Talk to your tween about dating before they start. Kids mature at different paces, so one tween might be more interested in dating than another of the same age. They may have questions about dating or sex in general as well as questions about their own feelings. Try to answer questions calmly and without judgment, even if it makes you uncomfortable. Frequent, open communication helps kids learn about healthy relationships and make smarter choices about sex. v Dr. Raaj Amin

YOUR HEALTH

REINVENT YOURSELF

During Healthy Aging Month

D

o not act your age or at least what you think your current age should act like. What was your best year so far? 20? 30? Now? Picture yourself at that age and be it. Some people may say this is denial, but we say it’s positive thinking and goes a long way toward feeling better about yourself. (Tip: Don’t keep looking in the mirror, just FEEL IT!) Be positive in your conversations and your actions every day. When you catch yourself complaining, check yourself right there and change the conversation to something positive. (Tip: Stop watching the police reports on the local news.) Have negative friends who complain all of the time and constantly talk about how awful everything is? Drop them. As cruel as that may sound, distance yourself from people who do not have a positive outlook on life. They will only depress you and stop you from moving forward. Surround yourself with energetic, happy, positive people of all ages and you will be happier too. (Tip: Smile often. It’s contagious and wards off naysayers.) Walk like a vibrant, healthy person. Come on. You can probably do it. Analyze your gait. (Tip: Make a conscious effort to take big strides and walk with your heel first.) Stand up straight! You can knock off the appearance of a few extra years with this trick your mother kept trying to tell you. Look at yourself in the mirror. Are you holding your stomach in, have your shoulders back, chin

up? Check out how much better your neck looks! Fix your stance and practice it every day, all day until it is natural. You will look great and feel better. (Tip: Your waistline will look trimmer if you follow this advice.) How’s your smile? Research shows people who smile more often are happier. Your teeth are just as important to your good health as the rest of your body. Not only is it the first thing people notice, but good oral health is a gateway to your overall well-being. (Tip: Go to the dentist regularly and look into teeth whitening.) Stop brooding and complaining about having no friends. Do something about it now. Right this minute. Pick up the phone, landline, or cell and make a call to do one or more of the following: Volunteer your time, Take a class, Invite someone to meet for lunch, brunch, dinner, or coffee. Choose a new person every week for your dining out. Start walking not only for your health but to see the neighbors. Make it a goal to walk 10,000 steps a day. Want to lose some weight or belly fat? Make it 15,000. You can do it! Find your inner artist. Who says taking music lessons is for young school children? You may have an artist lurking inside you just waiting to be tapped. Have you ever wondered if you could paint a portrait or scenic in oil? What about working in wood? (Tip: Sign up now for fall art or music classes and discover your inner artist!) v Source: www.healthyaging.net

FIT FAMILY

Teen Fitness Tips The benefits of being a fit teen are plentiful, but it’s important to also know how to help reduce injury risks and stay motivated over the long haul. Being fit and healthy is more than just exercising, so it’s a good idea to learn more about what you need to do to be healthy all around. Here are 5 fitness tips every teen should read: Eat brain food. This is the good stuff, which is the unprocessed, whole foods, which include things like salads, poultry, lean meats, eggs, healthy fats, etc. Unprocessed foods are packed with vitamins and nutrients that will keep you sharp mentally and physically fit, too. Train to be more useful. Going to the gym to work on your “abs” and “beach muscles” is usually done with endless sit-ups and biceps curls, but you can get the same effect by training to be more athletic, faster, and generally more useful in life, which means working to get your entire body stronger. You can work with a personal trainer to put together a routine that meets these needs and goals that are tailored specifically for you. Go into Do Not Disturb mode. A big part of mental fitness is the ability to step away from the phone calls, texts, and Instagram feeds. Your mind will keep you feeling better when you walk away from those things more often. Take some time to go for a walk or spend time playing with your dog, as these kinds of things are good for your body and your mind. Appreciate that nothing happens overnight. When embarking on a fitness routine, it helps to celebrate the small victories that come with the little daily improvements. Yes, you may want to get a big bench press or increase your vertical jump by several inches - both are worthy pursuits, but both also take time and dedication. Learn to love the small changes and watch how they lead to meeting big goals. Beware of the changes. Fitness has changed a lot in 20 years, so be careful whose advice you take. There are plenty of well-intended coaches and parents who dole out advice that is at best antiquated and at worst downright dangerous. Listen to your body, ask questions, and seek out expert advice when you need it!

National Pizza Day

Want to celebrate Pizza Day on September 5th, but need a healthy alternative? Here is one option! Cauliflower Crust Pizza Cauliflower makes a healthy alternative to regular pizza crust. As an added bonus, the dough looks like regular pizza crust, so kids won’t know they’re eating vegetables! 1 head of cauliflower, cut into big chunks and put in processor until resembles rice 1/2 to 2 cups mozzarella, shredded 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt 1 large egg Cook the cut and processed, rice-like cauliflower in a sauté pan over low heat for 5 to 10 minutes to evaporate any excess liquid. Meanwhile, in a separate bowl mix the egg, salt and cheese. After the cauliflower is done, combine all ingredients, which will make a doughy base. Mold the base in a round, pizza shape and add topping ingredients such as blue cheese, roasted pears and fennel. See below for the final baking instruction.
