hope everyone’s gardens are off to a good start! Beginning in April, adding freshly picked fruits and vegetables to your family’s diet becomes a little easier if you have a green thumb, time, and patience. If you are like me and have none of these qualities, page 18 is your lifeline for the season. Our local farmers make it easy for us non-farmers to provide plenty of fresh veggies to our families, and this year the markets have expanded to include an Ogden location and evening times! This April, Wilmington Parent celebrates the arts with our Arts Guide starting on page 20! If you are looking for a way to find your child’s artistic niche, our Arts Listings have a nice variety to get you started. Interested in simply providing an arts experience for the family to enjoy? Wilmington Symphony Orchestra presents a free concert for families on April 24 at Kenan Auditorium. Page 21 has all the details, plus a little more information about the benefits of participating a a music program. Our Fit Family Challenge starts next month, and now is the time to sign up! If your family is ready to challenge themselves and possibly win some fun prizes, visit www. myfitfamilychallenge.com to register. The Keill and Hengst families are preparing for the challenge and ready to share their experiences with our Wilmington readers! Check out page 11 if you would like to learn more about these Spotlight Families.

have you heard….? We start this month with Fool’s Day. I enjoy a good practical joke on April 1st, but I’ve never thought food should be included in an April Fool’s Day prank. However, this one time I might make an exception. April Fool’s Day vegetables is a trick that could help those parents struggling to get their picky eaters to clear the veggies off their plate. Here are a few sneaky ways I found at www.hellofresh.com that might even fool some parents! Zucchini: Add in grated zucchini to your meatballs, hamburger patties, or spaghetti sauce. For a healthy twist on baked goods, you can even add in grated zucchini to your breads, muffins, and cookies! Butternut Squash: Incorporate mashed or pureed vegetables like squash into meals and snacks adds creaminess without added fat. Butternut squash in mac and cheese gives a beautiful yellow color and a rich sauce that can still be flavored with cheese. Adding pureed pumpkin into ordinary oatmeal gives it an extra fiber boost and a bright color. Beets: Beets taste amazing in tomato sauce and sweeten it up without added sugar. You can also add pureed beets into pancake or waffle mix, for pretty pink princess pancakes!

The sounds of spring can be heard in neighborhoods all over Wilmington. For me, those sounds are most likely the carpet cleaner and swishing of dust cloths. Spring Cleaning is an opportunity to throw open the windows, let some fresh air in, and make your home a clean, happy and efficient space. The Spring Cleaning Checklist app is a way I’ve found to keep me on track and not get overwhelmed with the enormity of spring cleaning. This app gives you tips for organizing family spring cleaning days, includes video tips and tricks and has music you can listen to while cleaning your home.
When you get tired of the yearly cleaning task, maybe you can focus your energy on raising money for a good cause. The 4th Annual Shave for Sean Childhood Cancer Event Benefitting the St. Baldrick’s Foundation will be held on April 16th from 1-4pm at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Wilmington. The entire family can join the efforts to fight childhood cancer through a silent auction, bake sale, lunch plus much more as teams compete to raise money by shaving their heads. All money raised goes to fund lifesaving research for childhood cancer, the number one disease killer of children in the U.S. For more info or to donate www.stbaldricks.org/events/shaveforsean4 Spring will pass us by quickly, and it will soon be summer and beach season. Still not ready to be seen in a bathing suit? There is a unique opportunity to get into shape aboard the Coast Guard Cruiser Diligence, moored on the waterfront in downtown Wilmington. Ship Shape is a weekly workout series called DILI Fit, running every Tuesday through April. Participants will complete regular bodyweight workouts, cadence runs, and challenging circuits that can be adapted for all ability levels. Bring your own water bottle, workout attire, workout mat, and a great attitude. RSVP on their Facebook page.
Of course, April would not be the same without a visit downtown to enjoy our main event of the year - The North Carolina Azalea Festival on April 8th-10th! The crowds can be overwhelming, but day at the Street Fair Children’s Area is family fun for everyone! Games, children’s craft projects, and a stage dedicated to children’s performances make it worth the effort. Visit www.ncazaleafestival.org for a complete list of events.

Peppy Pals Peppy Pals is a game that helps teach children empathy. In a world of constant bullying, many parents are searching for ways to connect with and teach their children the valuable qualities of empathy and emotional intelligence. This new game aims to help solve this problem through the use of fun animal characters and their unique personalities. There is no text to read, so children as young as 3 or 4 can begin learning about empathy, social skills, and friendship in a fun playful way. Peppy Pals was created by Rosie Linder, a mother of two that understood the importance of starting early to to develop emotional intelligence. Peppy Pals consists of three apps and are available via iOS, Android and Amazon.
FlipBelt Workout Accessory FlipBelt is a must-have accessory for our large running community in Wilmington, NC. The FlipBelt is a belt made of super stretchy material that can comfortably hold your keys, phone or wallet. I have a young teenage runner, and one of the problems we have when she is out running - I have no way to get in touch with her. This belt allows her to carry her phone with her in case of an emergency without getting in the way of her training. One other issue is the rising temperature and I am always looking for ways to keep her hydrated when she is on an exceptionally long practice run. FlipBelt has solved that problem with the release of their uniquely designed water bottles that fit comfortably in any FlipBelt. Their bottle has been designed with a flat rather than rounded build that fits tightly and unobtrusively against the body. Runners don’t feel any unnecessary bulk, and can quench their thirst at any time without interrupting their run. The FlipBelt line of workout accessories can be found at REI, Bed Bath & Beyond, 24 Hour Fitness, Sports Authority, and many other retailers across the nation. visit www.flipbelt.com

Straight Talk about Online Harrassment By Carolyn Jabs
P
arents don’t want to think about it, so kids are often unprepared. Cyberbullying may seem like something that happens to other people, but the statistics say otherwise. A study from the Pew Research Center found that, among adults, 40% have experienced online harassment and 73 % have witnessed it. (The sad facts are summarized at onlineharassmentdata.org) For teens, the numbers are a little lower, though researchers note that many adolescents don’t report incidents of cyberbullying for the same reason they don’t talk about offline harassment: They feel intimidated and humiliated. They assume nothing can be done. And they worry talking to adults will make the problem worse. That’s why parents need to be proactive. The hard fact is that most children will eventually encounter people who use the Internet to intimidate, harass and threaten others. The best way to fortify kids is to talk--in advance—about what cyberbullying is, how to prevent it and what can be done when it happens. Here’s some of what your child needs to know:
Recognize it when you see it. Cyberbullying comes in many forms. The mildest is mean comments, name-calling and shaming. Painful as this may be for the target, it’s not dangerous. Learning to shake off mean and ignorant comments is a life skill. To give kids perspective, talk about the American tradition of free speech. Even nasty, mis-informed people have a right to their opinion. That doesn’t mean your child should give them time or attention. Other forms of harassment are more serious, especially if they continue day after day. These include threats of personal harm including rape, spreading lies that damage a person’s reputation, posting personal information including cell phone numbers or sexual photos and techno attacks such as taking control of a social media account. Help your child distinguish between unpleasantness and risk. Be proactive. The best way to deal with any problem is to avoid it. Raise your child with the assumption that people will be kind to each other. Model that way of living in your home, and help your child find friends who respect and appreciate each other. Online, help your child build a community where people treat each other well. Point your child toward the helpful Social Media Safety Guides produced by Heartmob (iheartmob.org/safety_ guide). There are separate guides with straightforward explanations of privacy tools for Facebook, Twitter, Reddit, Tumblr, and Youtube.
Report—sometimes. Experts give contradictory advice about how to respond to cyberbullies. Some recommend ignoring the behavior because most bullies are looking for reaction and attention. This is especially true online where anyone can say anything to anyone. Others recommend telling the bully to stop. That is also easier—and somewhat safer—online where it’s possible to send a private message that may appeal to the other person’s sense of fair play. Threats of abuse or harm should be documented by saving messages or capturing screen shots. Notify local police or the FBI with the understanding that they may be ineffective because laws lag behind technology in many states. The Cyberbullying Research Center maintains a comprehensive library of materials about cyberbullying including a complete list of regula8 | April 2016 | Wilmington Parent
tions in every state (cyberbullying.org/cyberbullying-laws). Internet services are also inconsistent in how they define and respond to harassment. Twitter, for example, recently started a Trust and Safety Council “to ensure that people feel safe expressing themselves on Twitter”-- and was immediately slammed for restricting free speech. This is a good topic for dinner table discussion before a problem arises. If you were running a social media site, what limits would you put on what people can post? How should someone decide whether to ignore, confront or report a cyberbully?
Get creative. Because bullies can’t always be avoided and authorities can’t always be effective, a growing number of people are taking creative steps to make the Internet—or at least corners of it— safer for everyone. Kids who know about these efforts are less likely to feel hopeless about bullying if it happens to them or they witness it. They may still feel shock, shame and even fear, but they will also know that they have allies and role models who have figured out effective ways to respond. A Thin Line provides detailed information about online harassment and encourages kids to share steps they’ve taken to assert their digital rights. The site, developed by MTV, also has a For Grownups Section that lists helpful resources (athinline.org/pages/parents-and-educators) BeStrong Emoji are little symbols, distributed by Vodaphone, that allow kids to encourage people who are being harassed. (vodafone.com/content/ parents.html ) We Heart It is a social media app that limits harassment by allowing users to “heart” but not comment on content uploaded by others. (weheartit.com) StompOutBullying runs a free, confidential chat line for teens over 13. Trained volunteers provide support to young people who are distressed about online harassment. (stompoutbullying.org) The Speech Project details all the ways young women can be harassed online. The tools and resources section provides up-to-date information about what girls and young women can do to protect and defend themselves. (wmcspeechproject.com). StopIt is a software platform that allows people within a community to anonymously send screenshots of material that is offensive or abusive. Schools that use the app have seen a reduction in the number of cyberbullying incidents. (stopitcyberbully.com) It’s natural for parents to want their children to live in a kinder, safer world. At the same time, parents need to equip children with the skills they need to cope with problems should they arise. When parents talk—in advance—about communities that have mobilized to combat cyberbullying, children become stronger, more confident and more likely to respond constructively to whatever comes their way online. v Carolyn Jabs, M.A., raised three computer savvy kids including one with special needs. Her new book, Cooperative Wisdom: Bringing People Together When Things Fall Apart, will be published in spring, 2016. Visit carolynjabs.com for more information. @ Copyright, 2016, Carolyn Jabs. Help Control Mosquitos
that Spread Dengue, Chikungunya, and Zika Viruses By Danielle Villegas
A
side from being itchy and annoying, the bite of an infected female mosquito can spread Dengue, Chikungunya, and Zika viruses. People become infected with these viruses after being bitten by an infected mosquito.
What we know • No vaccine exists to prevent Dengue, Chikungunya, and Zika viruses. • Only prevention is by avoiding mosquito bites. • Mosquitoes that spread Dengue, Chikungunya and Zika viruses bite mostly during the daytime. • Steps to prevent mosquito bites • Wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants. • Stay in places with air conditioning or that use window and door screens to keep mosquitoes outside. • Sleep under a mosquito bed net if you are overseas or outside and are not able to protect yourself from mosquito bites. • Use Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)-registered insect repellents. When used as directed, EPA-registered insect repellents are proven safe and effective, even for pregnant and breastfeeding women. • Treat clothing and gear with permethrin or purchase permethrin-treated items.
If you have a baby or child: • Do not use insect repellent on babies younger than 2 months of age. • Dress your child in clothing that covers arms and legs, or • Cover crib, stroller, and baby carrier with mosquito netting. • Do not apply insect repellent onto a child’s hands, eyes, mouth, and cut or irritated skin. • Adults: Spray insect repellent onto your hands and then apply to a child’s face.
Steps to Protect Your Community • Eliminate water in and around your home • Tightly cover water storage containers (rain barrels, cisterns) so mosquitos can not get inside. • For containers without lids, use wire mesh with holes smaller than an adult mosquito. • Repair cracks and gaps in septic tank.

Symptoms: The most common symptoms of Dengue, Chikungunya and Zika are fever, rash, joint pain, and conjunctivitis (red eyes). The illness is usually mild with symptoms lasting for several days to a week after being bitten by an infected mosquito. v Sources: www.cdc.gov; www.epa.gov; www.nhcs.net

Fit Family Challenge Meet Our Spotlight Families! The Hengst Family We are an active homeschooling family. Homeschooling gives us an amazing opportunity to fit unique activities into our daily schedule, while learning the whole time. We love the outdoors. Now that the weather is so nice we love to hike at places like Brunswick Nature Park and Lake Waccamaw. We also love the beach. Our oldest son, Christian, is 13. He likes the outdoors, running, karate, video games, science, and any RC items (cars, helicopters). Madison is our only girl and she is 8. She likes dance, horses, drawing, dolls, and going to the playground. David is our youngest bundle of energy and he is 5. David likes basketball, scooters, playgrounds, coloring, and video games. We joined the Fit Family Challenge because although we are active, we are not where we want to be in our fitness/health journey. My husband and I certainly could lose a few pounds. I know that I feel better when I am eating right and staying consistently active. My kids are active, but need to learn how important consciously adding healthy activity into your daily schedule is. I think a challenge is so perfect for this. A challenge like this helps to make us accountable for our attainable goal while having fun. By the end of this challenge I hope for us to come out healthier, more fit, and having an attitude that fitness is fun and a way of life. Our ultimate end goal is to make healthy eating and fitness our way of life in a way that it is not a goal anymore, it is just part of our life.
The Keill Family
We are a very close knit family and enjoy spending time with each other. We are the family on the go! My husband and I have been happily married for 23 years! We all love to travel and would like the children to visit every state before they graduate. We serve our community together and this past winter the boys collected and passed out coats, water bottles, tents etc. for the homeless. The whole family enjoys fishing, biking, hiking, swimming with the manatee (Crystal River, Florida) and camping. A little more information about our family: Tyler - 11 years old and participates with Boy Scout Troop 210. Tyler likes to practice his guitar and hopes one day to play on stage. Tyler works hard with the family training for the 5K Tinted Turtle Color Run and the Tour de Cure, a two day bike ride. Porter - 9 years old and a Webelo Cub Scout with Pack 210. Porter plays soccer for Pleasure Island Soccer Association, and practices with the family training for the 5K Tinted Turtle Color Run. Tom - 43 and will have a birthday during the challenge! Tom owns a company called SouthEast Imaging Service, and is a proud member of the Wilmington Chapter of Penn State Alumni. Tom currently enjoys his time with the boys training for the 160 mile bike ride (Tyler and Tom ride a tandem bike) and coaching the boys for the upcoming 5K.

Earth Day STEM Activities By Danielle Villegas

arth Day is an awesome time to introduce important concepts such as recycling, pollution, planting, composting, and reusing with kids. Even young children can get involved and learn how to help our planet!
The best Earth Day activity uses what you already have. Reuse items in different ways. Play out of the recycling bin. Here are a couple activities that are fun for any day, but perfect for teaching kids about respecting our planet.
MAKE IT RAIN Materials: • glass mayonnaise or canning jar • plate • hot water • ice cubes • index cards Process: • Pour about two inches of very hot water into the glass jar. • Cover the jar with the plate and wait a few minutes before you start the next step. • Put the ice cubes on the plate. Explanation: What happens? The cold plate causes the moisture in the warm air, which is inside the jar to condense and form water droplets. This is the same thing that happens in the atmosphere. Warm, moist air rises and meets colder air high in the atmosphere. The water vapor condenses and forms precipitation that falls to the ground.

SELF WATERING SEED STARTERS Repurpose 2 liter bottles and turn them into self-watering planters for starting tomatoes, cucumbers, or colorful flowers indoors. Once you make a variety of seed starters, have the kids give them away to friends and family as Earth Day gifts! Materials: • 2 liter bottles • potting soil • Seeds • thick string or yarn • Phillips screwdriver • Hammer • sharp blade to cut the bottle Process: • Cut the bottle in half • Use the screwdriver and hammer to punch a hole in the center of the bottle cap. • Cut a length of yarn/string about 1’-1.5’ long, double it over and tie a loop on one end. • Thread the yarn/string through the hole in the bottle cap so that the knot is on the inside of the cap. This will act as a wick, drawing water up from the basin below and into the soil. • Put the cap back on the bottle top and nest the top of the bottle in the base. As the plants grow and use up the water, you can just lift off the top to add more to the base instead of pouring it over the soil. • Label the bottle and add potting soil and seeds. • Then add water to the potting soil and the bottom the first time. Later you only need to add water to the bottom. v

Growing Creativity Through Writing SPECIAL SECTION: Arts Guide
By Danielle Villegas
L
earning to express feelings and thoughts through writing can begin at any age. When children write stories or even jot down thoughts and events that happen throughout the day they learn begin to see the world through a creative and more in depth lens. Here are a few ways to help your young writer get started as well as a few writing contests to help motivate kids that enjoy a more competitive atmosphere.
Reading helps promote writing! Set aside time for reading every day. Write a Book Review. Encourage young writers to write a book review of their favorite book.
Talk about writing with kids. Provide meaningful comments about their writing without being overly critical. Build their confidence so they know writing is not a scary thing and it can be fun as well as rewarding! Journaling. Allow young writers to write every day in a journal. Not only does it have the benefit of unloading their thoughts and expressing their worries, writing every day helps them look at the world differently.
Create a chain story, which is a fun, collaborative-writing strategy. Write the beginning of a story. Pass it on with the instruction that the your children write a sentence or two that moves the story forward and then pass it around the family.
Letter Writing. Practice the art of letter writing! Whether they write to a family member, friend, or pen pal, letter writing is a great old-fashioned way to promote communication, understand their audience, and improve writing skills.
Travel Journal. Instruct a young writer to keep a travel journal – this can be based on trips or daily observations of the physical and social environment around them.
How-To Article. Have your child write a how-to article on something they know.
Pictures. Allow younger writers to tell their story or journal through drawing pictures. Every age can participate regardless of writing skill level! 20 | April 2016 | Wilmington Parent

ny musical training is beneficial to young minds as it teaches discipline and musicality, but a growing number of young local musicians are joining the orchestra ranks as violin, viola, cello, and bass players. Many middle schools in Wilmington offer the option for students to play a string instrument in preparation for joining one of Wilmington high school’s orchestra programs. The benefits of playing an instrument has been researched over the years and the Americans for the Arts says, “Students with an education rich in the arts have higher GPAs and standardized test scores, lower dropout rates, and even better attitudes about community service—benefits reaped by students regardless of socio-economic status.” Playing a challenging instrument, such as a string instrument, requires dedication and practice that has benefits that reflect in many areas of a child’s life. 1. Musical training helps develop language and reasoning: Students who have early musical training will develop the areas of the brain related to language and reasoning. The left side of the brain is better developed with music, and songs can help imprint information on young minds. 2. A mastery of memorization: Even when performing with sheet music, student musicians are constantly using their memory to perform. The skill of memorization can serve students well in education and beyond. 3. Students learn to improve their work: Learning music promotes craftsmanship, and students learn to want to create good work instead of mediocre work. This desire can be applied to all subjects of study. 4. A sense of achievement: Learning to play pieces of music on a new instrument can be a challenging, but achievable goal. Students who master even the smallest goal in music will be able to feel proud of their achievement. 5. Kids stay engaged in school: An enjoyable subject like music can keep kids interested and engaged in school. Student musicians are likely to stay in school to achieve in other subjects.

Virgo Students Demonstrate STEM Projects and Receive Grant Money from NC Holiday Flotilla The students at DC Virgo Preparatory Academy recently shared their STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) projects and knowledge with the North Carolina Holiday Flotilla board members and other community stakeholders as they received a $5,400 donation for the school’s STEM program from the Flotilla’s 2015 efforts. “The Flotilla is pleased to present this gift in support of economic and workforce development for our shared community. These children will be our workforce of tomorrow and we want them to be prepared,” noted long-term Flotilla Board member, Linda Brown. “It is fascinating to see the STEM projects and hear the students share their knowledge. I am impressed.” “Making the transformation to a STEM-focused school requires a substantial infusion of time and financial support to facilitate purchases relating to STEM equipment, focused teachers’ STEM training and incremental student exposure outside the classroom, among other items. We deeply appreciate the Flotilla’s support,” commented Eric Irizarry, DC Virgo Principal. This Flotilla initiative is possible through the generous support of CastleBranch, McGladrey and others. In 2014, the Flotilla added a philanthropic sponsorship initiative for businesses and other organizations that were interested in education as a tool for developing the local community and future workforce. This effort has focused on supporting the STEM in education initiative at DC Virgo in 2014 – 2016. You can visit the Flotilla’s website at www.ncholidayflotilla.org.
