EDITOR’S NOTE
M
y emotions have always been divided in August. One part of me is excited to get the kids out of the house and see what the new school year brings. The other, possibly larger, part of me just wants to have a year long summer vacation. No stressful schedules, outdoor concerts, camping, beach trips and no school drama. Of course, I’ve known some families that have successfully taught their kids at home, or one in particular who teaches her daughter while traveling the world, but for me...it’s back to school time for the kiddos! For those who will be joining me, our Back-to-School Section has you covered with resources and ideas to help make the transition smoother. If you are trying to fit in some last minute summer fun, the first part of August’s calendar still has a good list of events to enjoy. I always feel like the stores start pushing back-to-school mentality so early, that I have decided this year I will ignore the subtle signals and enjoy every single summer day that we have left! If you would like to join me, I will be the mom kicked back in a chair on the beach with a book, every weekend this month. For the early planners, meet me there once you finish your school supply shopping! The one thing we have to look forward to with back-to-school, is that my favorite season is just around the corner. Fall is coming, and so are all those amazing festivals! Keep up with the upcoming excitement at www. wilmingtonparent.com. Have a wonderful school year!
Danielle

Sydney McCoy is the 2017/2018 NC Mermaid Spot Fish Queen and is using her platform to raise money for Hampstead Kiwanis Park. She is the first Queen in the history of the Spot Festival to have held two titles, and having worked with the Hampstead Park during her prior reign, she decided to raise money for the Hampstead Kiwanis Park expansion and improvement projects selling engraved pavers. Engraved Pavers will be sold in three different sizes and placed from the parking lot to the concession stand by the playground. Pavers are a wonderful way to recognize your children’s accomplishments; family memories; community memories; business support; pets ; a coach gift or team support. Personalized logos are available for upload; stock images as well as mini replicas of your brick donation. The park plans to expand walking trails, sports fields, future tennis courts and install pickleball courts. You can help by visiting polarengraving.com/hampsteadkiwanisparkinc.
Did you know that New Hanover County is expanding their recycling efforts to food scraps? The public can bring unpackaged food waste to New Hanover County’s composter free of charge. The composting program diverts food waste from the landfill, and makes a meaningful step towards reducing the amount of waste the county generates. Residents can bring fruit and vegetable scraps, meat, poultry, and fish, dairy products, including yogurt, cheese, sour cream, butter, spoiled or uneaten food, cooked or raw, pet food, coffee grounds, and more. The compost is used for New Hanover County Parks and Gardens, including Airlie Gardens and the New Hanover County Arboretum. For a complete list of accepted items visit, recycling.nhcgov.com.

The Children’s Museum of Wilmington is excited to announce it has been awarded a generous grant from the Delta Dental Foundation to update its Tooth-a-saurus exhibit. The Tooth-a-saurus exhibit is one of the most popular areas in the museum. It provides a hands-on based learning component and promotes positive children’s dental health and hygiene practices. In the pediatric dental exhibit, children learn about oral health in an less intimidating environment. They can brush the model teeth, learn about the different types of teeth, and then hop into a real dentist chair to examine the teeth of a Tooth-a-Saurus. Tooth decay is the most common, chronic childhood disease today. The Delta Dental Foundation’s grant to the Children’s Museum of Wilmington will help provide the oral health education that children need in order to show up for school healthy and ready to learn. Check CMoW’s social media channels for updates on the progress of the exhibit. Have a tip, lead, or just an interesting bit of news to share? I want to hear all about it! Send me an email to danielle.wilmingtonparent@gmail.com.

PRODUCT REVIEW
Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood Crayola Tree House Play Set This is a great item for those little ones who won’t be joining their older siblings at school just yet. Instead, they can join Daniel Tiger and his friends on an epic adventure in the Neighborhood of MakeBelieve with the all-new Crayola Tree House Play Set from Amloid. This is a multi use play set with sturdy building blocks, super cute stickers and assorted crayons. Surprises are the norm for this company, if you gently remove packaging from around the tube, you discover coloring fun on the backside of the wrap with several illustrations. The crayon tube is a nice touch, not only does it provide storage but is also a great decorative accessory. When little ones are finished, just put everything back in the tube and store. The 32-piece set includes 3 block fit figures, 8 Crayola crayons, 1 decal sheet, and 20 Kids@Work building blocks.

Mamma Chia Squeeze Homemade Popsicles This product caught my attention because when it’s hot and muggy outside I find myself saying, “hey, let’s make our own popsicles”. Then I realize the work and mess involved and I just give everyone an ice cube. Here’s an easy solution: Take a Mamma Chia Squeeze and squeeze it into a popsicle mold. The size just happens to be perfect, and you’ll have homemade popsicles for the kiddos without even using a single kitchen utensil. And the texture is like it’s made to be frozen! Your kids receive a delicious treat while also ingesting healthy fiber, calcium, iron, and protein. These come in flavors like Strawberry Banana, Wild Raspberry and Mango Coconut so your kids won’t even know they are eating healthy.
Popcorn Quinoa Chips Allergen-friendly food industry leader SAFE + FAIR is expanding its portfolio of products with the launch of new Popcorn Quinoa Chips. This is great to toss in a lunch box for kids going back to school because they are free of five of the top eight allergens including peanuts, tree nuts, eggs, shellfish and fish, the sweet & savory chips are also non-GMO, gluten-free and Kosher. Even though they are free of some bad stuff, they have an addicting taste and the chips come in six flavors including: Sweet Siracha Popcorn Quinoa Chips, Sweet & Salty Popcorn Kettle Quinoa Chips, and Olive Oil Sea Salt Popcorn Quinoa Chips. v

Tracking Teens: Setting Limits and Giving Freedom By Christa Melnyk Hines
T
hanks to GPS technology in smartphones, we have plenty of options when it comes to keeping up with our teenagers, but should we? As with so many other parenting decisions, it mostly depends on what works best for your family and what skills you are trying to help your adolescent develop. During the teen years, it’s developmentally appropriate for kids to strive for more independence. Parents help foster responsibility by slowly giving more freedom over time as trust is built and skills are learned.
Curbing distracted driving. Many parents use tracking apps to help reinforce important safety practices when they aren’t there. Jackson-Rice says she and her husband opted for the Cell Control app when their son got his driver’s license. “We wanted him to develop a very healthy habit of not being on his phone while in his car from the beginning,” she says. With any skill that you are nurturing, it’s important to clarify and implement consequences if rules are broken. For some families, that might mean pulling back on their teen’s curfew or restricting driving privileges. Supporting new drivers. Kelly Wornall opted for Life 360, when her 16-year-old son started driving, also to reinforce safe driving. “We use the app more for peace of mind when he’s out driving,” Wornall says. “A huge benefit of the app is the feature where I can click ‘get directions to my child.’ He is horrible with directions, and we’ve had several instances where I’ve needed to meet up with him. I would have had issues finding him without the app.” The app offers crash detection and emergency response, a map pinpointing your loved one’s location and weekly driver reports, highlighting phone usage, acceleration, braking and top speeds.
Tracking for control. Although she can see the wisdom of apps for vehicular safety, mom of five Cheryl McGaugh has chosen not to use apps
as a way to keep tabs on her kids. “I feel that if I lead and guide with mutual love and respect, I have no need or reason to track them,” McGaugh says, whose kids are 22, 16, 14, 11 and 9. Apps like mSpy and SpyBubble can be used anonymously to monitor your teen’s texts, calls and social media accounts. Some experts believe monitoring apps can cross a line if your teen has never give you a reason not to trust them. “If you have a difficult kiddo that has some boundary issues and following rules issues, then I see how apps could benefit when safety is a concern,” Jackson-Rice says. “Where we run into trouble is when there wasn’t a reason for us to become so hyper-involved with our teens.”
How much do you want to know? The problem Jackson-Rice ran into with Cell Control was she got more information than she wanted, like her son’s acceleration since the app also tracked his driving speed. “What we learned is that it created a lot of anxiety in parenting, which I’ve heard from many parents. They’re constantly aware of what their teenager is doing,” Jackson-Rice says. Of course, once you have that information, you have to decide what you’re going to do with it. Jackson-Rice says she chose to ignore the extra information, instead zeroing in on her goal of teaching her son not to use his phone while driving. If he gets pulled over by the police for speeding, he’ll have to face the natural consequences of receiving a speeding ticket. In using a tracking app, you as a parent are skating on a fine line between making sure your kid is safe and stalking them. We don’t want to be helicopter parents, but at the same time, we want to know he arrived safely at his destinations. Freelance journalist Christa Melnyk Hines resides with her husband and their two middle school sons. She is the author of Happy, Healthy & Hyperconnected: Raise a Thoughtful Communicator in a Digital World.

AFTER SCHOOL FUN
SPECIAL SECTION: Back to School
By Christa Melnyk Hines
A
fter-school activities are an essential and fun way to round out your child’s overall educational experience. Integrate both structured and DIY activities that complement your child’s disposition, age and interests.
Doodle, dabble, draw. Art education contributes to problem-solving and critical thinking skills, not to mention creativity. Independently-run studios and museums offer classes for kids of all ages like painting, drawing and sculpture. DIY: Put together an “imagination bucket” with art supplies, including recyclables, construction paper and other doodads. Encourage your children to present their individual masterpieces to the family at dinner.
Move it. Team sports nurture social, communication and leadership skills. And experiencing loss builds resilience as kids learn to persevere through disappointment. Individualized sports like swimming, martial arts, or tennis are also beneficial, helping kids develop focus and self-discipline. DIY: Burn off energy by shooting hoops in the driveway, running through a homemade obstacle course, or groovin’ to funky music before homework time.
studies find a relationship between music education and its influence on mathematics skills, including the ability to recognize patterns, sequencing, spatial reasoning and tempo. DIY: Make your own music. Fill drinking glasses with different levels of water. Tap each jar lightly with a spoon and listen for the varying pitches and vibrations each emits. Kids also like making their own instruments from drums out of oatmeal containers to rain sticks from covered paper towel tubes.
Encore! The performing arts offer a positive outlet for expressive children and can enhance reading comprehension and verbal and non-verbal communication skills. Also consider debate, photography and journalism clubs. DIY: Help your child set up a blog to share his writing and photos with a select audience. Check out www.kidzworld.com which offers kids a safe and fully moderated place to blog. (Geared for 9 to 14-year-olds.) Younger kids can hone their storytelling chops by writing a story, dressing in costumes and acting it out.
Checkmate! A popular and ancient game of strategy, chess fosters patience and impulse control as players learn to plan and visualize their moves on the board. DIY: Start a club at your child’s school or challenge your kids to a family board game or cards.
Be of service. Scouting, Boys & Girls Club, the YMCA, and youth groups are examples of service organizations that offer real-life experiences outside of the classroom, fostering confidence, leadership and communication skills. Through engagement in their communities, kids are less likely to feel isolated. They gain a greater appreciation and understanding of the world around them. DIY: Volunteer together at a local shelter, help a neighbor with yard-work or gather canned goods for a food pantry.
Strike the right note. Kids who learn to play an instrument learn to
Seek balance. While variety is the spice of life, don’t overwhelm your
read music and gain a sense of timing, beat and rhythm. Multiple research
kids with activities which can cause stress and affect grades. v

If your daughter comes home, and she just had her first boyfriend leave her for her very best girlfriend, she’s going to be incredibly sad, hurt, maybe even angry. What most parents do in this case, is they will tell their child “There are many other boys out there that will be much better for you than Jimmy, We never really liked Jimmy anyway, Don’t feel sad tomorrow’s a new day, You’ll get over this quicker than you know.“ And that ladies and gentlemen, moms and dads, is the very worst advice you could ever give your young daughter. Why? Because you’re not allowing her to feel. You’re not allowing her to express her emotion. One reason we do this, is whatever skills we were parented with, even if we say we will never do them, odds are when we get into a stressful circumstance we’re going to have a knee jerk reaction, and go back to how our parents, parented us. But it doesn’t mean it’s healthy. So what should you do when your child comes home and they’ve been excluded from the clique they were part of? Or didn’t make the cheerleading squad? Or the band? Or the basketball team?

Allow Them to Speak The most important thing is to allow them to speak, don’t take their pain away, don’t tell them everything is going to be OK, because that’s an absolute lie. Allow your child to express, to feel, to vent. Sit. Listen. And listen some more.
Accept Their Pain The other reason why parents tell their children everything is going to be OK, “you’ll find a better girlfriend or boyfriend, you’ll make the sports team next year don’t worry about this year…” Is because they don’t want to feel their child’s pain. If your child is crying, or angry, or hurt, and you say tell me more about what you’re feeling, you actually have to feel their pain. Often parents don’t want their children to hurt, so they come up with some type of a positive statement to shut the child down.
Looking for a Real Estate Agent? I am here to help you!
The number one rule to becoming the best parent, is to allow your children to feel, to be angry, to be sad, to feel alone. The more you allow your child to express their true feelings, the healthier they will grow up as young adults.

SPECIAL SECTION: Back to School
O
ne of the toughest things about sending kids back to school is helping them navigate the friendship drama, hurt feelings, problems with teachers, rejection, and disappointment. These stressors can cause problems with school work, home life, and long term mental health. As parents, we try our best, but many parents make the same mistakes their parents made when it comes to allowing their children to feel their deepest emotions.

Hanover Pediatrics
1904 Tradd Court - Wilmington NC 28401 910-769-4994 hanoverped@hanoverpediatrics.com hanoverpediatrics.com Once kids reach school age, the “Back-to-School Check-Up” is often the only scheduled visit with your child’s pediatrician every year. Sure, it gives your pediatrician a chance to provide a thorough physical exam. Yes, it can clear your child to play sports. But it also offers an important opportunity to discuss emotional or social concerns. For older children, it’s a good chance to address important issues such as drinking, smoking, drugs, sexual activity, and depression. Finally, pediatricians can discuss topics such as diet, exercise options, vision screenings and more. Schedule your child’s exam at least four weeks prior to the starting the sport’s season and/or the academic year. This allows ample time to seek referrals for any new health or wellness concerns, to rehab any lingering injuries and to ensure your child is ready physically and emotionally for a great new year. Call Hanover Pediatrics at 910-769-4994 for more information.

t’s back to school time and the inevitable problems need to be addressed. How can you get back on that early to bed, early to rise schedule? How can you best communicate with teachers? How will you encourage your kids to work hard and do their best while at school and also with their nightly homework? Here are some tips for making that back to school transition as smooth as possible.
Anticipate the schedule change and move bedtimes earlier by increments over several weeks before the beginning day of school. Going to bed fifteen minutes earlier isn’t a big deal and it will help avoid that drastic change from the relaxed summer schedule to the rigid, up and at’em schedule of fall.
Make back to school shopping fun and reasonable. The supply lists may be long and costly so do your best to get a head start on that. But for school clothes you may want to shop sales for a few new outfits and then wait until after school begins to buy any other necessary clothing items. You may be able to minimize the items purchased by adding some classic colors and styles to what is already in the closet.
Take advantage of any back to school or meet the teacher open houses at the

schools. Most of kids’ worries and concerns about school revolve around unknowns such as the location of bathrooms and classrooms, the identity of their new teacher, and the friends who may be in their class. A thirty minute visit to school before the opening day will do a lot to dispel such worries.
Look for signs your child is concerned about returning to school. If sleep habits or eating habits change, of if your child voices worries about school, take the time to talk about them. Some children fear bullying behavior on buses or on playgrounds. Be sure to assure them that both you and school staff members will protect them. FAMILY TRAVEL
VACATIONING WITH INFANTS H
ave you convinced yourself that your traveling days are over until the baby years are successfully behind you? Don’t give up just yet. You can, and should, take vacations with your baby. This is not the time to deprive yourself of time away from everyday life. Some key reasons you should vacation with your baby: • Babies have no agendas. Unless you’re balancing the needs of a baby with the needs of an older sibling, you can pop your baby in a sling or Snugli, and you have an entire afternoon to wile away at the museum. No arguments from the peanut gallery. • Babies sleep a lot. They’ll nap in a stroller while you sip lattes at a sidewalk cafe, stroll through the countryside or shop for souvenirs. • Babies don’t need much to be content. They just want to be with you, even if you’re doing some vacation activity they’ll find hugely boring in a few years. Of course, traveling with an infant is not all sunshine and rainbows. But, there are plenty of things you can do to help ease the way and keep everyone smiling.
Where to Go With a Baby • City Adventures - Big cities have plenty for the parents to do, and all that action on the street gives the little guy something to look at as you stroll down busy sidewalks.
24 | August 2018 | Wilmington Parent
• All Inclusive Resorts - Most country you visit, especially seaside locations, offer resorts that include everything you need for a good time. Some even offer a nanny service so the parents can have a night out. • Beach House - You’ll save money by buying your own groceries (not to mention you won’t have to bring baby to a million different restaurants). And renting a beach house is a great way to get other family members, like your parents or in-laws, together for a few days. Hello, free babysitting!
What to Avoid • Exotic Destinations - You might want to hold off on any plans to go to Southeast Asia or Africa for now. Any place where baby would need special immunizations or malaria pills is probably not worth the stress right now. • Camping - Bugs, bears and the whims of Mother Nature? That doesn’t exactly sound like the best baby vacation destination. In fact, a camping trip will probably just mean a ton of work. Think about the logistics of baby-safe activities and where to put stinky diapers. • Bed-and-Breakfast - Sure, B&Bs were a perfect getaway when it was just you and your partner, but now that you’re planning a vacation with baby in tow, it probably won’t work. You’ll constantly worry that baby’s cries are waking (or annoying) everyone in the house. v

OUR PETS
Wondercide For pet parents that want to protect their pets from pests, but avoid the harmful chemicals in some of the more common flea treatments, this may be the solution. Founded by Stephanie Boone out of Austin, Texas, Stephanie was faced with life threatening side effects from a vet-prescribed flea and tick treatment performed on her dog Luna. While several vets recommended that Luna be put down, Stephanie nursed her back to health and began her research for a healthy alternative to protect both Luna and her family. Boone left her job in the tech industry and, soon after, Wondercide Natural Products was born. Since 2008, Wondercide has continued to expand and develop new, natural products the whole family can enjoy without the harsh chemicals. Some of my favorite products that are useful for the whole family (with or without pets!) are: Natural Shampoo Bars, House Treatment Flea & Tick Control, for Pets, Home, and Yard, Natural Pet Parent Pack. You can find these at www.wondercide.com.
Helping Pets With Back-to-School Anxiety The hurried rush of back-to-school and shorter days means families are spending more time focused on school work and active schedules. As a result, the change in routine can be confusing for pets. Instead of going for walks and playing in the yard, their companions suddenly head out the door without them. Dogs especially are creatures of habit and it is important to establish clear rules and a set schedule to avoid anxiety. Transition Time. About a week before the kids return to school, begin getting your dog used to their absence by getting out lunchboxes and bookbags in the morning and leaving them inside for about 30 minutes or so while the kids go out to play. This will help to desensitise them to anxiety-producing cues. Set a Routine. Exercise and play in the morning before the kids leave, extra attention and play when they get home, and family time in the evening. A routine helps them deal with the changes. Enrich the Home Environment. While you are gone, leave slow, calming music playing to offset the sudden quiet in the home. Leave interesting and interactive toys and food puzzles out during the day to keep them occupied. Doggy Daycare. Consider letting your dog socialize and play at doggy daycare a few days a week to expend some energy.
Pet of the Month Morty the Sugar Glider
Morty has been a welcome addition to his home with one teen and one preteen learning a little more about this unique pet. Morty is a nocturnal marsupial in the kangaroo family and his life span is approximately 12 to 15 years. Sugar gliders are extremely social animals once they bond to their owners. They are considered to be pocket pets, and you can also carry them in their bonding pouch as well. Morty loves to play and pull strings from his pouch into his cage. Along with his daily sugar glider food, Morty enjoys eating lots of fresh fruits and vegetables.
We all love to show off our nonhuman family members, and now is your chance to have a bigger audience! Send in your pet photos to danielle.wilmingtonparent@gmail.com with a little information about their unique personality and how they fit in to your family, and they may be featured in an upcoming issue!

YOUR HEALTH
NATIONAL BREASTFEEDING MONTH
A
ugust is National Breastfeeding month and now more than ever we need to promote mothers, babies, and families who choose to breastfeed. While there has been significant progress in breastfeeding awareness over the past five years, encouraging women to discuss their desire and plans to breastfeed with their clinicians, family and friends, employers, and child care providers is key. Family members— including spouses, partners and the baby’s grandmothers—can play critical support roles, both with regard to assisting in decision-making about how the baby is fed and in providing support for breastfeeding after the baby is born. Breast milk is the natural first food for babies, it provides all the energy and nutrients that the infant needs for the first months of life, and it continues to provide up to half or more of a child’s nutritional needs during the second half of the first year, and up to one-third during the second year of life. Breast milk promotes sensory and cognitive development, and protects the infant against infectious and chronic diseases. Exclusive breastfeeding reduces infant mortality due to common childhood illnesses such as diarrhoea or pneumonia, and helps for a quicker recovery during illness.
Interesting Breastfeeding Facts: • Breastfeeding in public is legal - According to the National Conference of State Legislatures, 49 of the 50 states have legislation in place pro-

tecting (or at least allowing) breastfeeding mother’s right to nurse their child wherever they please. • Breastfeeding moms get more sleep - You probably don’t feel like it, but it’s estimated that breastfeeding moms get an extra 45 minutes of sleep per night, according to a study in the Journal of Perinatal and Neonatal Nursing. • Breastfeeding Rates Among Mothers 30 And Up Is Significantly Higher Than In Younger Moms - Data collected by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that the percentage of moms who breastfeed increases greatly in older moms. Only about 43 percent of moms who are 20 and younger breastfeed while 65 percent of moms aged 20 to 29 breastfeed. Moms over 30 have the highest breastfeeding rate, at over 75 percent. • Breastfeeding Can Save Your Family $1,200 To $1,500 Each Year - Although breastfeeding isn’t completely free (if you plan to purchase things like nursing bras, a breast pump, bottles, etc.) it’s definitely going to save you a bit of cash. According to Women’s Health, the average amount a breastfeeding family can save from not buying formula is anywhere from $1,200 to $1,500. Offer a breastfeeding mom support to help her during this important time. If you need help, ask your pediatrician if a lactation consultant is on staff and visit www.lllofnc.org to find out more about the support groups that La Leche League of Wilmington North Carolina offers. . v

Stress Reducing Apps for Kids Fitness isn’t just physical, it’s mental too. Here are a few apps that help kids learn how to manage feelings and stress. Breathe, Think, Do with Sesame Street Kids learn how to relax themselves so that they can better cope with common, everyday stressful situations. Divided into five interactive scenarios, kids help Cookie Monster take deep breaths, come up with plans for addressing these stressful situations, and then try out those plans. Breathing Bubbles Kids learn to identify and respond to their emotions. When opening the app, kids are asked to name their emotions among a range of options and then choose how strongly they are experiencing those emotions. They are taught deepbreathing techniques, and are encouraged to write more independently about they feel. DreamyKid Kids learn how to relax their bodies and minds through meditations, visualizations, and affirmations in the form of calming, positive messages. Of particular interest to many kids will be the issue-specific meditations, including ones aimed at building confidence before sports matches, doing schoolwork well, and falling asleep at night.

Report, Don’t Repost With school starting, Pender County Schools want to remind everyone about the importance of being a proactive citizen and their legal responsibilities when sharing information on social media. They call this campaign “Report, don’t Repost” in collaboration with local law enforcement. This campaign’s focus is on the community being an equal partner in ensuring the safety of our schools. Report, don’t Repost encourages students not to turn social media postings into widespread rumors, but rather to bring them to the attention of a trusted counselor, teacher or law enforcement officer. PenderSafe.com provides information on and access to resources within the school system, details on drills and the emergency response plan, and links to external resources such as the National Suicide Prevention hotline, Rachel’s Challenge and a local crisis hotline. And of course, the website also includes a “Report, Don’t Repost” online form that allows students to not only report social media threats, but also to report incidences of fights and cyberbullying, and concerns about suicidal tendencies.
