EXCITING NEWS: BEHIND THE NEW DOORS OF DAC
JANUARY 2016
OPEN HOUSE & REGISTRATION: DECEMBER 9, 2:00-4:00PM Behind these doors, magic happens and so much more! Dance Arts Conservatory would like to welcome you to its new 3,500 sq ft state of the art facility at 902 South College Road. With three, fully renovated studios, a new morning preschool coming in January, and a full list of offerings, Ms. Cory Smith, has found the perfect space to accommodate her quickly growing conservatory. Also beginning in January, we will have live, piano accompaniment for Company Classes: The only studio in the region to do so!
“dancing in excellence” For those of you who don’t yet know her, Ms. Smith hails from a prestigious background in the fine art of dance. Earning recognition among her peers as a dancer and choreographer, she is also certified by The International Ballet Competition teacher training program. Ms. Smith’s career has come full circle with DAC and this wonderful new space in which to house her dreams. She has realized the great value in shaping the next generation of dancers, trained in love and discipline, skill and technique. In this same spirit of quality, Ms. Smith has assembled a team of high caliber faculty, who all bring experience, quality and their respective certifications to DAC. When combined, their years of training total more than 150 years. DAC stands out in fine arts education for many reasons. First, there is a firm No Competition policy in place. If a student is dedicated and wants to dance, no one is turned away, regardless of formal skill level. There is a place for every dancer at DAC. As inclusive as this policy may seem, no performance suffers for it: yet one more arena in which Ms. Smith dominates. DAC productions are impressive and entertaining works. Ms. Smith and her faculty are able to bring out each individual’s personal best, and in so doing, strengthens the Conservatory as a whole. The high expectations of the faculty are clearly evident in the culmination of efforts that are DAC’s Spring and Winter performances, festivals and community events. Join us this December 12th for the area’s only holiday performance of The Lion, The Witch & The Wardrobe and see for yourself! @dacwilmington

he holidays are here! There is so much to do around Wilmington during the holiday season, sometimes my schedule gets overwhelmed. Before we all become thoroughly distracted by the sights and sounds of the season, let’s find meaningful and long-lasting ways to give back to our community. Thalian Association Community Theatre is offering the community a couple of opportunities to help others during the holidays by hosting a Salvation Army Angel Tree in the lobby of the Hannah Block Historic USO/ Community Arts Center, 120 S. Second Street until December 13th. Good Samaritans can stop by the center, select a tag, and make the holiday season brighter for our neighbors in need. The tags list clothing and other necessities, and a hopeful wish or two, for a child who otherwise may have nothing to open on Christmas morning. During the same time, a Marine Corps Toys for Tots box will be available for donations of new and unwrapped toys. Both are wonderful ways to share some good will this season. For more information, go to www.thalian.org.

S.H.A.R.E. NC is also finding ways to promote philanthropy in our community. S.H.A.R.E. is a nonprofit organization dedicated to serving children and their families who are facing difficult circumstances. Based in eastern North Carolina, S.H.A.R.E. assists families in 5 counties: Pender, Duplin, New Hanover, Brunswick, and Columbus. By focusing on the philosophy of “PAY IT FORWARD”, they hope to make a difference in not just one family or individual but the community as a whole. This year S.H.A.R.E. will host Christmas at the Castle an annual Christmas event on December 5th from 11-4 at Castle Branch, 1844 Sir Tyler Dr. This event will have face painting, crafts, games, Santa, movies, a food truck lineup, and more! Although the event is free, they are asking for a donation of 1 new child’s toy OR 2 canned goods. A donation of $20 will grant admission to the brewery for drinks. To learn more about the organization, visit their website at www.sharenc.org. There is never a shortage of family friendly holiday events in Wilmington during the month of December, but how about an event that combines the holidays with a bit of history? On December 5th from 10am to Noon and again from 1-3pm, The Battleship North Carolina in Wilmington presents A Verry Merry Showboat featuring a chance for kids to fly a flag with Santa (bring your own or purchase one at the ship’s store), with Santa and the Battleship’s Captain signing a certificate of authenticity. Children can also type Christmas wish lists on a vintage typewriter using authentic WWII radio message paper; and call the North Pole in the Battleship’s main radio room; see Santa’s journey being tracked in the Combat Information Center; and create Christmas cards for veterans in VA hospitals. Visit www.battleshipnc.com for more information on this unique opportunity. If you’re just looking for a chance to relax and take in the atmosphere of the holidays, don’t miss The Holly Jolly Holiday Stroll in historic downtown Wilmington on December 11th & 12th. This special time features a variety of holiday sights and activities including street musicians and local choral groups and more than two dozen businesses participating in a window decorating contest, and of course a visit from Santa. Find out more at www.wilmingtondowntown.com/ events/holly-jolly-holiday-stroll. Want to stay warm in your car and cruise Wilmington enjoying the best Christmas lights around town? Check out Wilmington Christmas Lights on Facebook! Every year this self-proclaimed Christmas light enthusiast takes the time to let the Wilmington community know where the best Christmas light displays can be found. Instead of driving aimlessly around town, visit this local site for up-to-date information on the neighborhoods with the most impressive light displays! Have a tip, lead, or just an interesting bit of news to share? I want to hear all about it! Send me an email at danielle.wilmingtonparent@gmail.com. If you include a picture, I’ll be extra excited!

Twist and Seal Outdoor Cord Protection This is the time of the year when many of us light up our homes and display our creativity with holiday decorations that blink, flash, twirl, and sing. With the unpredictable weather of North Carolina, bringing all that electricity outside is risky. One day we could see a flood, the next an ice storm. Twist and Seal is perfect for the protecting your electrical cords from any kind of weather. These come in different sizes and can be used anywhere there is a need to keep power cord connections protected from the outside elements. Twist and Seal’s design encloses connectors in a water tight cocoon. These will safeguard your home and family from outages and electrical shock. Twist and Seal is available in three sizes: Mini, Cord Dome and Maxx. They can be purchased at Home Depot, Lowes, Ace or online at www.twistandseal.com.
All The Above Clothing Every year, there are always a few family members and friends who receive a shirt or sweater from me as a gift. Although I put thought into choosing something I think they will like, I often feel guilty for not finding a gift with more meaning. This year I have found a solution! All The Above Clothing offers a unique way to give the gift of clothing, inspiration, and hope. ATA Clothing designs shirts and hoodies for men and women with the goal of lifting and restoring the soul, one person at a time. ATA takes a quote and expresses it through art on their apparel in subtle and unique ways, allowing their customers to embody something beautiful and meaningful. Each month, ATA takes some form of inspiration and builds an abstract, concept-based design around this theme. The inspiration of each design is printed on the product tag on the inside of the shirt so the customer can remember the hidden meaning behind the design. Each month customers will get an email that highlights the chosen quote for the month and shows a new product as well. It is a perfect and personal gift to give and receive. In addition, part of every proceed goes to the charity of your choice! Check out their most recent designs at www.ata-clothing.com.

Prosperity Cinnamon The smell of cinnamon laced baked goods is at the top of my list of yummy memories every year during the holidays. I like to use cinnamon in my coffee and oatmeal all year, but this spice gets extra use in my kitchen during the winter months. This powerful little spice has amazing health benefits from one substance, called cinnamaldehyde, which is naturally present in cinnamon. Cinnamaldehyde is the source of many antifungal and antibacterial properties that make cinnamon such a great addition to your diet. Cinnamon’s high concentration of antioxidants can also help protect the body from damage from free radicals and reduce inflammation, reducing risk of cancer and other diseases. World Vision has made it possible to give the gift of cinnamon this season while also giving back to an impoverished community. Prosperity Cinnamon is a gift that will help address specific, urgent needs that might otherwise go unmet for a child, family, or community. Prosperity Cinnamon is Vietnam’s renowned sweet cinnamon produced from a renewable resource collected from the Cassia tree, sold to benefit generations of hard working families. This cinnamon comes in a beautifully carved cinnamon bark box contains 3 oz. of cinnamon and bears a common Asian character for prosperity. v

growing up online
When Google Won’t Do… By Carolyn Jabs
S
earching is a basic skill that every adult—and child—needs to master. Everything you might want to know--and some things that are pretty dubious—can be found online, but you have to be able to locate what you need when you need it. Google, of course, dominates the field so completely that “Googling” is synonymous with searching. That dominance worries some people, including the FTC, whose staffers prepared an internal report about how a Google search favors Google services over services provided by competitors. Google also depends upon a proprietary algorithm that sets the rules about searching. Google shares some of what it is doing behind the scenes on its own website. (Search for “how search works” on the Google website.) Still, critics point out that there are inevitably assumptions and biases in the search process. Some of these assumptions work to the advantage of parents. You really don’t want adult material to show up even if your child searches for an innocent word that has a double meaning. On the other hand, Google also makes assumptions about what information is reliable based in part on how often other sites link to it. This can make popular sites seem more reputable than they really are. Google is also vulnerable to Search Engine Optimization, an entire industry built around trying to get material from clients to show up on the first page of a Google search. People who use SEO are skilled with keywords, metatags, and other identifiers that Google uses to decide which of all the millions of websites will be most relevant to you after a specific search. Finally, Google customizes search results based on what you’ve searched for in the past. That means there’s nothing “objective” about Google results. You and your neighbor can search for the same term but come up with different results if previous searches show that you have different opinions and preferences. None of this means that families should abandon Google or the many websites where search is powered by Google. At the same time, it’s good to be aware of alternatives that may be preferable under specific circumstances.
When children are young. Elementary age children who are just beginning to search are likely to be confused and overwhelmed by what they find on Google. Kidclicks.org produces a limited number of results, vetted by librarians. Each item is ranked by reading level, so it’s easier to pinpoint the material that will be useful to a child who is trying to master the intricacies of tornados or dinosaurs.
When you want a simple answer. If you have a child who asks a lot of questions, you need to know about Ask.com. The search engine was designed to respond to “natural language,” so you can type in a question like “Why is the sky blue?” and you’ll get quick, authoritative answers. When you want a different spin. The Bing.com search engine, designed by Microsoft, uses its own proprietary algorithms so the results are a little different. Comparing the harvest on Bing and Google can be illuminating, especially for controversial topics. Bing also sweetens the pot with a rewards program that allows users to earn points that can be redeemed on websites like Amazon and Fandango. 8 | December 2015 | Wilmington Parent
When you want privacy. Google keeps track of searches, so it’s database includes information about everything from your health issues to your purchasing preferences. If you’d rather keep your search history private, you can use HYPERLINK “http://duckduckgo.com” \t “_blank” duckduckgo.com or HYPERLINK “http://ixquick.com” \t “_blank” ixquick.com. Both websites promise that they won’t record anything about you or your searches.
When you want just the facts. Wolframalpha.com indexes nothing but verifiable information about math, science, history and other topics. This makes it an especially good source for students who are trying to get their facts straight.
When you want to do good. Goodsearch.org is powered by Yahoo, which is now owned by Bing, so it won’t return different results. It will, however, donate a penny to the cause of your choice every time you or your kids use it.
When you want reliable health information. Looking for health information on Google can be contradictory and even scary. For the kind of research-based information you’d get from your family physician, turn to curated medical sites like Medline Plus ( HYPERLINK “http://nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus” \t “_blank” nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus), which is managed by the National Library of Medicine, or Kidshealth.org, which has been providing family-friendly health information for over 20 years. When you want context. Yippy.com collects information from a variety of other search engines and quickly files what it finds into folders that appear on the left hand side of the screen. Sometimes seeing sub-categories for your topic makes it easier to zero in on the information you need. When you want the human touch: DMOZ.org is a directory of the Web, developed and maintained by an enormous network of volunteers. It won’t return millions of results, but each site has been reviewed by a person instead of a robot. No matter what search engine you or your kids use, you’ll get better results if you follow a few simple rules: Put words that go together in quotes. Link words that are equally important with AND. Use a plus sign (+) to indicate words that are crucial to your search and a minus sign (-) to rule out words that aren’t relevant. Most of all, teach your kids that what they find online is only as good as its source. Kids who can think critically as they search will have a huge advantage in a world awash in information. v Carolyn Jabs, M.A., raised three computer savvy kids including one with special needs. She has been writing Growing Up Online for ten years and is working on a book about constructive responses to conflict. Visit HYPERLINK “http://www.growing-up-online.com/” \t “_blank” www. growing-up-online.com to read other columns.

Pre-Tox Before the Holidays with Yoga By Sandie Orsa
T
he holidays can be a stressful time with added pressure to our schedules, combined with a change of food intake. Instead of dealing with the after effects, why not be proactive! Here are some tips on pre-toxing before the holidays to help support our bodies physically and emotionally before the hustle and bustle begins.
Yoga Poses Detoxifying: These three postures can add slight pressure and help wring out the internal organs, stimulating movement in the digestive organs and flushing of the liver and kidneys! Revolved Chair Pose Feet together, knees together - sit back as though you are going to sit on a chair, weight in the heels. Palms together, hands in a prayer, inhale and twist to the right bringing the left elbow to the outside of the right knee, keeping the heart faced towards the side. Inhale and exhale 3 times. Inhale coming back to center and on the exhale twist to the left. Inhale and exhale 3 times. Inhale coming back to center and then stand tall. Redirecting your focus back to your breath. This pose will help to press onto the ascending and descending colon; helping to detoxify. Supine Twist Lying on your back, bringing your right knee to your chest while extending your left leg to the floor. Placing your left arm on your right knee, guide the knee over to the left allowing it to fall gently to the floor. Extending the right arm out into a “T” position. , opposite arm extended. Gaze is out over the extended arm. This twisting posture can also help detoxify the body. It may help stimulate digestion and relieve stomach discomfort. Sphinx Pose Lying on your stomach, propped on the elbows. Elbows spread shoulder widths apart, thumbs touch. Releasing any engagement in the glutes. This pressing into the abdomen can help detoxify other internal organs, such as aiding in flushing the kidneys and the liver in addition to assisting with digestion. Relaxing: These three postures can help stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system which initiates the relaxation response. That is definitely good to have as the holidays approach! Legs Up the Wall Simple. Keep about a fists distance between your glutes and the wall. Extend your legs up the wall and keep them just over hips distance apart. You can place your hands under your lower back for support if needed.
10 | December 2015 | Wilmington Parent
You can also support your hips and lower back with a rolled up blanket or even a pillow. You may close your eyes and take 5-10 deep breaths, resting the arms down by the sides or placing the left hand on the abdomen and the right hand across the heart. Reclined Cobblers Pose Lie back on an incline , knees fall out to both sides and the soles of the feet connected. If you’d like, again closing the eyes and maybe placing one hand on the abdomen and one on the heart. Taking 5-10 deep breaths. By placing the hands you can visualize the breath moving through your body. If this does not feel comfortable you can allow your hands to rest in your lap or your arms to fall by the sides. Savasana When all else fails, just lay down. Lay on the floor, on your bed, on the couch. Simply, just lay down. Release any stress, tension or tightening in the face, the shoulders, the legs. Imagine your body melting into the floor. You may place a blanket or pillow underneath the knees to help support the lower back as well. Again, closing the eyes. Breathing here for 10-15 breaths or maybe even set a time for 5-10 minutes.
Clean/Healthy Eating Keeping yourself sustained is super important with the upcoming holiday season. Healthy snacking can help ward off cravings or temptations to overindulge. Before stepping out for the holiday parties, have a healthy snack; nuts, a piece of fruit, or some raw crunchy veggies, like celery and carrots. Be mindful of potential stress eating or emotional eating that may arise. Ask yourself, are you really hungry or just stressed?
Meditation We may not realize it because it is an involuntary motion, but our breath is super important! It has been proven that even short breathing and meditation sessions each day can help alter the molecular structure of the brain as well as calm the nervous system, lower blood pressure, and relieve stress and tension. An accessible activity: Stand tall with your feet planted, knees soft, pelvis tucked slightly and shoulders down and away from the ears. Palms can be facing the sky or arms can simple be down by the side. If you choose, close your eyes - bringing the awareness inward. You can also meditate sitting down with legs crossed or legs extended. Involve the kids as well! Kids can get stressed during the holiday season with being out of school and their daily routines interrupted! Have a wonderful holiday season! v Sandie Orsa, 200hr RYT, Operations Manager Wilmington Yoga Center

Parenting During The Holidays By Lynn Adams
D
ear Relative We Don’t See Very Often, We’re on the way to your house for Christmas dinner. Before we get there, I want you to prepare yourself, because you and I have the same goal: we’re going to have a good time. I used to be just like you. I had several cousins whose behavior at family events made excellent birth control. One boy my age was an expert at “I’ll show you mine, if you’ll show me yours.” A brother-sister duo were the loudest children our neighborhood restaurant has ever hosted. Another wore pajamas wherever they went and seemed always to be in a screaming rush. My parents would shake their heads when these cousins left, saying, “I just don’t know how your aunt and uncle stand having such wild kids. Why don’t they try some discipline?” We’d gird our loins for family functions that also included our friends, explaining, “The rest of our family is not as well-disciplined as we are.” In retrospect, it was satisfying to receive the holiday behavior prize every time. But my cousins didn’t seem to like me very much. Fast-forward thirty-five years, and my children are the ones the other relatives shake their heads about. And it’s not just the kids. Frankly, our family of four is loud, unpredictable, moody, impulsive, high-maintenance, and accident-prone, even on a good day. So as one who has seen both sides of the family holiday behavior equation, I implore you. Please know that I understand we aren’t easy to be around. Also know that family get-togethers are as important to us as they are to you. Bear some things in mind:
1. Correlation Doesn’t Imply Causation. Just like they taught me in Psychology 101. Imagine that the parenting you witness today could be the result, rather than the cause, of having a difficult child. Just because I’m willing to pack a peanut butter and jelly sandwich doesn’t mean I’ve made my child into a picky eater by giving in to his every whim. Maybe I’m more interested in him having a full belly, and thus better behavior, than in him trying your candied Brussels sprouts. 2. We’re At Our Very Worst. We’re out of our daily routine. The stakes are high. We’re dressed up. There’s a present waiting for us, we don’t know what it’s going to be, and we’re going to have to wait all day to open www.wilmingtonparent.com
it. When we do open it, it’s unlikely to be the signed Peyton Manning jersey we imagine it to be. If you want to know what we’re really like, come over after school on a regular Wednesday.
3. Think Short-Term. The parenting techniques you will observe today are short-term, not long-term, solutions. When my child belches at the table at your house, I’m going to ignore it. When he does it at home, I’m going to tolerate the thirty-minute tantrum that will result from my giving him a five-minute time-out.
4. Save the Advice. We get a ton of parenting advice from books, professionals, and well-meaning bystanders. We seek it out. We even pay for it. If you have a suggestion, wait a day and decide if it’s worth calling us about. If it involves a special diet or a spanking, keep it to yourself. 5. More Than an Ounce of Prevention. We’ve done everything we can do beforehand to prevent a problem. By the time we get to your house, both children will have had a full, nutritious meal. They got as much sleep last night as humanly possible, and if they didn’t, they’ve had a nap. They know that if either of them utters the word “booty” at the table, which is my worst fear and the most likely mishap, they’re going to lose something they cherish. 6. Relax, and Leave the Discipline to Us. No matter how awkward it looks. We spend a lot more time with our children than you do. If we insist that our child leave the dinner table early and that’s against the rules in your home, there’s probably a good reason. Last time I did this, I was pretty sure my son was about to vomit on the china, silver, tablecloth, and white upholstered dining chair in front of a party of twenty. If this holiday get-together is a chance to showcase my children, to enter them in a competition for best all-around kid in the family, I forfeit. I myself won that prize enough times, and it earned me nothing but superficial relationships with the cousins I was competing against. Let’s see this instead for what it really is, or should be: a chance to get together, to catch up, and to reminisce. v Lynn Adams is a child psychologist turned parenting writer. Holiday Baby Guide: Enjoying the Season with Your Newborn By Malia Jacobson
M
y most memorable holiday seasons didn’t involve expensive presents, exquisite decorations, or extravagant meals. I didn’t attend swanky cocktail parties or impress my friends with stylish gifts. I survived on reheated lasagna and takeout, accessorized with burp rags, and spent my time gazing at tiny fingers and toes. I was the mom of a newborn. Having a baby over the holidays transforms the season from merely festive to utterly unforgettable. Sure, it can be exhausting and overwhelming. But it comes with built-in advantages. Friends and family are likely to have vacation time to spend with you. Winter clothes make comfy and flattering postpartum wear. And future holiday celebrations will always be laced with memories of baby’s miraculous first weeks. For parents expecting a bundle of holiday joy, here’s how to make the most of this special season.
Get Busy While You Can Holiday tasks can help pass the long late-pregnancy days while you wait for baby’s arrival. Before my first daughter’s birth in early December, I was a model of holiday readiness. The house was sparkly clean, the gifts wrapped, and the cards mailed. I was finishing my third batch of Christmas cookies when I went into labor. Three years later, I welcomed our second holiday baby under decidedly different circumstances. The decorations were still in the basement, and there wasn’t a wrapped gift or Christmas cookie in sight. Yet my memories of that holiday season are every bit as great as the first. So tackle your to-do list if you can, but don’t worry if you don’t get everything done. Your newborn won’t mind. And looking back, neither will you.
Baby, it’s Cold Outside Parents, siblings, and guests should wash hands with soap and water before touching baby. Everyone in the family should get a flu shot and a Pertussis (whooping cough) booster. Skip big parties and germy public
20 | December 2015 | Wilmington Parent
spaces during the early weeks. When you can’t stay home, arm yourself with alcohol-based hand sanitizer, and limit the number of people touching and holding baby.
Ask, and You Shall Receive Honesty is a new parent’s best policy, especially near the holidays. When friends and family ask if you need anything, speak up and tell them what you could really use, whether it’s dinner, help around the house, or an hour of babysitting so that you can grab a nap and a shower. If they’re set on buying you something, request gift cards to put toward baby essentials.
Celebrate Your Way Caring for a newborn may leave you too drained to carry out your favorite holiday rituals, whether they involve decorating gingerbread houses, volunteering, or making the perfect potato pancakes. It’s normal to feel disappointed, but skipping a cherished tradition for a year doesn’t mean abandoning it forever.
Manage Gift Chaos Between new-baby gifts and holiday presents, packages will threaten to take over your already-crowded living space. Stash a pad and pen nearby to jot down who gives what, to make it easier to write thank-you notes later on. Keep gift receipts handy, but save any returning or exchanging until after the holidays, when you can take inventory of gifts and get it all done at once. No matter how carefully you prepare, your holiday baby will probably throw you a few curveballs. In my experience, it’s a near-certainty that your new bundle will scream during a long-awaited holiday party, spit up on Grandma, and have a blowout in a carefully-selected holiday outfit. So stock up on baby wipes, keep your camera nearby, and get ready for your most exhausting, amazing, unforgettable holiday season yet. v Malia Jacobson is a freelance writer and the mom of three, including two “holiday babies.”

National Influenza Vaccination Week National Influenza Vaccination Week (NIVW) is a national observance that was established to highlight the importance of continuing influenza vaccination. NIVW 2015 will be observed December 6-12, 2015. Take the CDC Flu Vaccination Pledge for the 2015-2016 season! The single best way to protect against the flu is to get vaccinated each year. Everyone 6 months and older should get vaccinated.
Find more resources at
www.wilmingtonparent.com
Seasonal influenza vaccine must be changed each year as the viruses naturally change over time. To avoid catching the flu, get vaccinated each year and practice good hand hygiene. To avoid giving the flu to others, stay home when you are sick, cough or sneeze into tissues and discard them properly, and wash your hands frequently with soap and water or use an approved hand sanitizer if soap and water are not available. What is the difference between a cold and the flu? The flu and the common cold are both respiratory illnesses but they are caused by different viruses. Because these two types of illnesses have similar flu-like symptoms, it can be difficult to tell the difference between them based on symptoms alone. In general, the flu is worse than the common cold, and symptoms such as fever, body aches, extreme tiredness, and dry cough are more common and intense. Colds are usually milder than the flu. People with colds are more likely to have a runny or stuffy nose. Colds generally do not result in serious health problems, such as pneumonia, bacterial infections, or hospitalizations. Visit www.cdc.gov and www.flu.nc.gov for more information on symptoms and prevention.
Indoor Fitness Activities 1. Indoor Ice Skating — All you need is some wax paper, rubber bands, and carpet. Use the rubber bands to strap on some wax paper and start skating! Be careful, as it’s quite slippery, but lots of fun! 2. Indoor Balloon Toss - Fill balloons with rice and tie some ribbon around the end. Use pillows or small blankets as landing pads. Have each landing spot count for different points and let the kids start tossing balloons for points! 3. Popcorn Pushups – Put a small bowl of popcorn on the floor. Lower yourself down and stick out your tongue to get a piece of popcorn with each thrust. 4. Bubble Wrap Attack – If you get bubble wrap in the mail, jump on it until it’s all popped. 5. Practice progressive relaxation - When you’re ready for everyone to calm down, this is the last game to play. Tense each body segment and then relaxing in turn (head, neck, shoulders, right arm, right hand, left arm, left hand, etc.).

Bradley Creek Receives Bright Ideas Grant Bradley Creek Elementary School has been awarded a Bright Ideas grant from the North Carolina’s Electric Cooperatives for $1400. The grant money will be used to enable fourth graders at Bradley Creek to participate in hands-on learning activities involving electricity and alternative energy sources. Students will conduct experiments in the areas of solar, hydroelectric, water and wind power. These experiments will allow students to make functional models, such as a water wheel with generator, a wind turbine, and a solar powered helicopter, to depict the vast opportunities different energy sources provide our global community. “I look forward to seeing our students engaged and inspired by the hands-on learning opportunities provided by this grant,” said Principal Dr. Lauren Kefalonitis. “Experiences such as these allow the curriculum to come to life and critical thinking to take place.” Fourth grade teacher Jamie Scordino, the grant writer, said “I believe these activities will provide our students with an opportunity that will be unique, engaging, and teach them to think critically about our environment and the impact of our actions.”
Eaton Elementary Students Celebrate World Kindness Day with Flash Mob The school wide focus at Eaton Elementary School this year is #BeKind. Students and staff have embraced the idea and kind deeds have been happening all around the school. Students and staff have been writing random acts of kindness that they have witnessed on paper links. A chain is created from the links that is wrapping around the cafeteria. Each week, names are drawn from the links that are submitted and they are announced on the school’s live TV show. The goal is to make the chain a mile long because “a slice of nice makes a mile of smile.” Kindness cards are also passed in an anonymous tag game. People get tagged with a kind deed and must then pass it on to someone else. The goal is to spread the tag game not just throughout the school but to the community and world beyond. On November 13th, World Kindness Day, all of the staff and students at Eaton Elementary gathered at the track for a flash mob dance to the song “Happy” to build camaraderie and remind everyone that kind deeds make everyone happy!

Icy Winter Fun A
By Cape Fear Museum of History and Science
re your kids obsessed with the movie Frozen? Ever wish you could build your own towering ice castles in warm, sunny Wilmington? Science is here to help with fun “super cool” experiments to fill your winter break! Exploring the states of matter – solid, liquid, and gas – is easy kitchen science. Kids can confirm that water freezes solid at 32 degrees Fahrenheit and boils to become steam at 212 degrees with a standard kitchen thermometer, a pot, a hot pad, a microwave, and a freezer. But water can sometimes surprise us! Have you ever put bottled drink in the freezer, pulled it out in a liquid state and tried to take a drink only to find a slushy substance instead? This is the principle of supercooling at work! Water forms ice crystals – a process called nucleation – relatively easily, but it happens even faster when the ice crystals have something to latch on to. This can be an impurity in the water, a scratch on the side of the container, or another ice crystal. Even frost falling from the top of the bottle will get the process started. But what happens when the bottle and water both lack impurities? When this happens, the water can “get stuck” in a supercooled state. Channel your inner ice princess and try these fun supercooled water experiments at home! More winter fun can be found at Cape Fear Museum’s Frozen-ology day on December 31 from 11am-2pm. Check out the whole Sci-ology week, December 28 – 31, with new themes each day. Information on these and other programs is available at www.capefearmuseum.com/programs.

The Icy Touch Materials: • Bottled purified water, still sealed • Freezer • Timer Instructions: Place the sealed bottle of water in the freezer. Set your timer for two hours. (Times may vary depending on the freezer. For the first attempt at this experiment place multiple bottles in the freezer and remove at fifteen minute increments to find the point at which you get super cooled water.) Take the bottle out gently and give it a firm tap or shake. Watch the ice crystals grow!
Now recycle me downtown!
Magical Ice Towers Materials: • Bottled purified water, still sealed • Freezer • Timer • Chilled bowl of ice Instructions: Place the sealed bottle of water in the freezer for the amount of time you figured out in the first experiment. Set your timer. Gently take the bottle from the freezer and slowly remove the cap. Very carefully pour the water over the ice. Build your ice towers and create an ice castle! v
