The 1st day of Spring is approaching. On March 20th Spring arrives and we can finally begin to plan for outdoor activities and warm sunshine! Are you planning to go on a family vacation for Spring Break this year? Many families are choosing to save some money and stay home, but that doesn’t mean missing out on a “vacation”. There are plenty of mini trips you can take around town during the break from school. Visiting one of our local museums, a park, or spending the day volunteering can be a nice break from the normal routine. The key is to act like it is a “real” vacation. What do you do on vacation? You take pictures, you hang out a little later than normal, you may even sleep in a little longer. Document your staycation in pictures, videos, or scrapbooking just like you would a vacation in a different geographic area. While you and the kids have a little extra time on your hands, why not put those hands to work while teaching kids about the people around them and other generations. Domtar Corporation has unveiled a new program called PaperPal. PaperPal is a project that aims to link senior citizens to students while helping kids work on their handwriting skills. The effort will connect generations through letter-writing. This will help youths develop fine motor skills, spur seniors to practice a useful cognitive exercise and give both groups a way to develop enjoyable and enriching connections. If you would like to find out more about starting this initiative in your school, visit www.paperbecause.com/handwriting. March 8th is International Women’s Day, and this is an important time to show our entire family the importance of celebrating women. This year’s theme is Pledging For Parity! Everyone - men and women - can pledge to take a concrete step to help achieve gender parity more quickly - whether to help women and girls achieve their ambitions, call for gender-balanced leadership, respect and value difference, develop more inclusive and flexible cultures or root out workplace bias. Each of us can be a leader within our own spheres of influence and commit to take pragmatic action to accelerate gender parity. Learn more and commit to take action to accelerate gender parity by visiting www.internationalwomensday.com. On this same day, March 8th from 11:30am to 1:30pm, the Women to Watch Leadership Initiative with Judy Girard will feature a lunch and a speech by the founder of the Girls Leadership Academy of Wilmington (GLOW), a school for at-risk girls in 6th to 12th grades. For ticket information, visit www.W2WLunch.com. Later this month, it will be time to celebrate Easter and hunt for some eggs! Here are a couple of Easter Egg Hunts you won’t want to miss. • Community Egg Hunt - March 19, 10:30am at College Acres Baptist Church • Spring Eggventure - March 24, 9am at Halyburton Park • Bunny Brunch and Egg Hunt - March 26, 10am at New Hanover County Arboretum Planning a trip with small children is stressful, if you have a child with autism, simply getting through the airport and boarding a plane can be nearly impossible. Families taking a trip this Spring with an autistic child are offered a special opportunity at Wilmington International Airport. Autism Takes Flight at ILM will take place on April 16th and participants will have the opportunity to complete a trial-run airport experience, including: getting a boarding pass, checking a bag, going through security, waiting at the gate and viewing a plane. Board Certified Behavior Analysts will be on hand to provide assistance and tips for success. Space is limited & pre-registration is required. Pre-registration is essential because materials will be distributed to the families beforehand that they can use in preparation. To register please visit CapeFearABA.com or email AutismTakesFlight@gmail.com. Special thanks to the sponsors of this event: Coastal Autism Solutions, Cape Fear ABA, UNCW Department of Psychology and Wilmington International Airport. Have a tip, lead, or just an interesting bit of news to share? I want to hear all about it! Send me an email to danielle.wilmingtonparent@gmail.com.

KidsTrade Spring will creep up on us before we know it. During this time most of us attempt the annual spring cleaning effort and try to get our children involved to no avail. Instead of (trying to) throw away items this season, why not channel your child’s inner entrepreneur and throw a digital garage sale. KidsTrade, is a free mobile app that allows kids to buy, sell and trade toys within their network of friends under parental supervision. All kids have to do is take a photo, write a description, and post it for their friends to see. Kids do the legwork while parents approve each step for added safety. KidsTrade helps families create a digital – and more efficient – garage sale. KidsTrade is an app created by a group of parents who watched their kids grow tired of their belongings almost as quickly as they collected them. This innovative app allows children and teens to trade things, like video games, toys, sports gear and clothes, with friends. Kids are connected to peers at their own school, creating a safe, closed community. Kids do the legwork... post, trade and deliver. Parents can check in anytime! This app is available for download on iOS and Android devices via the App Store and Google Play; www.kidstrade.com

Camp Board Game In honor of our Summer Camp Guide issue, I want to introduce parents to a board game that can help prepare young campers for their upcoming summer camp experience. Camp is a board game that helps bond a family together more than spending a few days in the outdoors roughing it without the comforts of modern life and technology. When you cannot take the time to get away, this new game from Outdoors Education brings the feeling of the great outdoors into your living room. From the level one Tenderfoot to the level four Nature Enthusiast, Camp is an outdoors trivia game designed to challenge the knowledge of every member of the family. To play, each person chooses their piece and places it on a seat around the campfire. During their turn players draw a card and attempt to answer the trivia question that corresponds with their skill level. For more information on the game visit www.educationoutdoors.net.

Organic India Tulsi Teas are made with the Tulsi herb. This herb has been known as the Holy Basil that provides balance to the body and has been cherished in India as a health-supporting herb. The Tulsi herb helps to support your immune system, reduces stress, increases energy, and is also known for its mood enhancing qualities. Tulsi is not a well-known herb in the west, I personally had never heard of this herb before I received my boxed teas. The teas come in a variety of flavors, my favorite was the Pomegranate Green Tea. They all have a nice flavor that I found did not require additional sweetening. These teas are all organic, fair trade, non-GMO teas.

New Guidelines for Tots and Tech By Carolyn Jabs

F

or many years, the American Academy of Pediatrics had strict rules about screen time—no exposure for kids under 2 and no more than two hours a day for preschoolers. Last December, the Academy abandoned those guidelines, acknowledging what parents already knew: Screens are everywhere. One recent study, published in the Academy’s journal Pediatrics, found “nearly universal exposure” for children under two. Even under age one, half of all babies interacted with a mobile device every single day, playing simple games, watching videos and fooling with apps. Academy policy makers concluded, “In a world in which ‘screen time’ is becoming simply ‘time,’ our policies must evolve or become obsolete.” The revised guidelines from the Academy don’t offer specific rules, perhaps because there isn’t clear-cut research showing that certain uses of mobile devices help or harm very young children. Instead, they provide general advice, intended to guide parents as they make decisions about when to hand over a tablet or a cellphone to a baby or a toddler. Here are their guidelines: Media is just another environment. Child development hasn’t changed. The Academy points out that kids do what they have always done but now they do much of it virtually. The most rapid period of brain development takes place before age three so infants and toddlers need a wide range of experiences, with and without technology, under the supervision of loving adults. Parenting has not changed. Parents still have to make decisions about what’s good for a particular child in a particular situation. The video that makes one child giggle may be overstimulating to another child or the same child at a different time of day. Good parents respond flexibly to new situations and, most importantly, to each child. Role modeling is critical. Little kids imitate adults. Parents who want kids to have a healthy relationship with screens will have to model selfcontrol by setting limits for themselves too. We learn from each other. Young children learn most easily when they are interacting with people. Language, in particular, develops most readily during natural back-and-forth exchanges between babies and adults. According to some studies, lengthy passive exposure to media such as videos may actually inhibit language acquisition. On the other hand, technology that promotes interaction—video chatting with a family member, for example—may stimulate language and other kinds of learning. Content matters. Rather than setting arbitrary limits on time spent with screens, the Academy recommends that parents think about everything a child does during the day. Is there plenty of time for being outdoors, moving around, reading books, singing songs, snuggling, being silly? Time with technology becomes a problem when it edges out other activities. Curation helps. Any app can claim that it’s educational. Very few have research to back up that claim. Little children, in particular, deserve the highest quality products parents can find. Before downloading an app or firing up a video, check reviews from organizations like Parents’ Choice (parents-choice.org), Children’s Technology Review (childrenstech.com/) or Common Sense Media (commonsensemedia.org/).

8 | March 2016 | Wilmington Parent

Co-engagement counts. The Academy points out that kids are more likely to benefit from screen time if adults are involved. Just talking about what a child is seeing or doing on a screen provides context and gives a small child a sense of connection. Playtime is important. Unstructured playtime stimulates creativity and independence. Unplugged play is especially important for very young children because they learn from touching and manipulating objects in the three dimensional world. Set limits. As many adults know, technology can have a mesmerizing effect. Games, in particular, are often designed to encourage mindless swiping, and little kids—like everyone else—may find it difficult to disengage. Setting limits requires the same gentle but firm techniques parents use in other settings. When children want cookies for lunch—or unlimited time on the I-pad—it’s up to parents to steer them in a different direction. Create tech-free zones. In particular, the Academy recommends that parents teach kids to power down during meals and at bedtime. Little children are more likely to adopt healthy eating habits if meals are a happy, social time with lots of playful interaction. At bedtime, research shows that light from screens can interfere with sleep cycles, so the Academy recommends devices be kept out of bedrooms. Kids will be kids. Very little children are likely to be hard on devices because they don’t know any better. They may put them in their mouths, bang with them or toss them in the toilet. The Academy suggests, “these can be teachable moments if handled with empathy.” Other organizations have also analyzed the existing research and come up with recommendations about the use of technology with very young children. Zero to Three offers Screen Sense: Setting the Record Straight, a free paper that summarizes recent research and suggests guidelines for screen use for children under three (www.zerotothree.org/parentingresources/screen-sense). The National Association for the Education of Young Children recommends best practice for childcare providers in another paper, Technology and Interactive Media as Tools in Early Childhood Programs Serving Children Birth through Eight (www.naeyc.org/content/ technology-and-young-children). All these organizations make it clear that definitive rules about young children and technology will have to wait for more research. They also emphasize that decades of study into child development, as well as common sense, confirm that children thrive when they have warm and trusting relationships with the people around them. The world may be filled with screens, but this advice from AAP rings true: “Keep face-to-face up front and don’t let it get lost behind a stream of media and tech.” v Carolyn Jabs, M.A., raised three computer savvy kids including one with special needs. She has been writing Growing Up Online for ten years and is about to publish a book called Cooperative Wisdom: Bringing People Together When Things Fall Apart. Vitamins for Girls The plethora of vitamins on the market reads like the alphabet- literally from A- Zinc. Do we, as women need to guzzle 50 a day to be healthy? Here’s a guide to vitamins that are important for women and teenage girls from Dr. Christopher Calapai D.O. an NYC anti-aging physician. • Calcium: If you don’t receive enough calcium from your diet, you may need to take a supplement containing elemental calcium. Elemental calcium refers to the actual amount of calcium in a supplement that’s available for your body to absorb—the rest are compounds making up the supplement. • Vitamin D: The reason we’re severely lacking vitamin D nowadays, much more so than even our parents were, is because we’re missing out on the number-one source of vitamin D: The sun. Because of widespread sunscreen use, total sun avoidance, and our increasingly indoor lifestyles, our vitamin D levels have fallen drastically. Women should take at least 2,000 IU per day year-round. • Folic Acid: For women in their childbearing years, folic acid is recommended if you’re planning on conceiving anytime soon. The recommended dosing of folic acid is 400 micrograms per day if you are age 14 or older. • Iron: Iron is a key consideration for menstruating women. Iron deficiency also commonly occurs in pregnant women, causing anemia, which can result in fatigue and weakness. Speak to your physician about recommended iron supplementation. Spring Forward, Stay Sane:

A Sleep Coach Walks You Through DST By Malia Jacobson

The Bump & Beyond is a place for families. Our entire inventory has been chosen with our own children in mind. We are very driven in providing local and US made items that are eco-friendly and safe. Our goal is to provide a fun and casual shopping atmosphere where moms can meet up for a class, let the kids play in the “Kids Only” area and pick up a few necessitates while they’re in.

on’t be sleepless this spring. Here’s expert advice to keep Daylight Saving Time from ruining your sleep routine. On Sunday, March 13, our clocks jump forward one hour for Daylight Saving Time. Without fail, the biannual clock-changing ritual cues a chorus of complaints from moms and dads. For parents, “springing forward” and “falling back” aren’t just hassles—changing the clock can quite literally wreak havoc on parent’s and children’s sleep routines. When the clock moves forward in the spring, the most common complaint from parents is that kids won’t go to bed “on time.” It’s not hard to understand why: When the clock reads 8 pm, your child’s body thinks that it’s 7. When 9 or 10 pm rolls around and kids still aren’t tired, parents get understandably grumpy. Here’s how to “spring forward” without missing a beat.

Rise and shine The key to helping your everyone fall asleep at normal bedtimes on clock-change day is waking everyone up earlier that morning, and for a few mornings preceding the change. Here’s why: If your child sleeps until his body’s regular wake-up time (say, 7 am) on clock-change day, the clock will read 8. If you try to put him to bed that night at 7 pm, his regular bedtime, only 11 hours have elapsed since he woke up, and he’s not likely to be tired enough to go to sleep.

Planning ahead The best way to avoid any sleep disruption: plan in advance. Beginning two to three days before the change, begin waking everyone 30 minutes earlier in the morning, and going to bed 30 minutes earlier at night. For babies and young children who still nap, make corresponding adjustments to naps by moving them 30 minutes earlier as well. In this example, that would mean waking your child at 6:30 am and putting her to bed at 6:30 pm. (This may sound like an extremely early bedtime, but remember, it’s only for a couple of days.) Remember to adjust your own schedule too! On the morning of DST, wake your child at his normal wakeup time. If he normally wakes at 7am Standard time, wake him at 7 Daylight time. (This will actually be 6 am, according to his body clock, but you’ve prepped him for this change already with a couple days of early wake-ups.) Offer nap(s) at the normal times. No need to make adjustments here. Having woken up at 7 am, he’ll be ready for sleep at his normal bedtime.

Last-minute help Starting last-minute? No time to prep your child a couple of days before the time change? No problem. Just remember to wake your child at her normal wake-up time (not the adjusted time) on clockchange day. If she normally wakes at 7, get her up at 7—her body will still think it’s 6 am, so she’ll probably still be snoozing, and she’ll be tired, because she “lost” an hour of sleep. But she will be ready to snooze at her regular bedtime that night. And you won’t have a wide-awake kid bouncing off the walls while you’re trying to watch Weekend Update on DVR. Daylight Saving Time, done! v Malia Jacobson is a sleep coach, an award-winning journalist specializing in health and family topics, and a mom of three. Flower Power By Cape Fear Museum of History and Science

S

pring is almost here! Flowers will soon be blooming all around us. Known for our azaleas, Wilmington is a great place to explore native and non-native flowering plants. Not only are the flowers in our yards and parks attractive, they are also critical to the survival of many species. Flowers produce nectar – a vital food source for insects, hummingbirds, bats, and other living creatures. In their search for nectar, these creatures transfer pollen from flower to flower thereby enabling the plant to reproduce. If you examine flowers closely, you can see the intricate anatomical parts that allow this process to happen. Exploring flowers is an excellent way for kids to discover this important piece of the circle of life. Explore your yard and community parks. See what flowers you recognize and what flowers are unfamiliar. Cape Fear Museum Park offers a variety of interesting flowering plants to see all spring. You may be familiar with azaleas and camellias, but can you identify beautyberries, coneflowers, and jessamine? Visit Cape Fear Museum over spring break to explore flowers and experience science activities in Try it Week: Take it Outside! from March 21-25, 2016. Each day, families will discover new hands-on science stations in the park, from water experiments to the physics of flight. Information on these and other programs is available at www.capefearmuseum.com/programs. Planning a fun, science exploration is a great way to spend time together as a family and learn something new at the same time! Work together to investigate the parts of a flower with this easy at-home dissection activity.

Backyard Flower Dissection Materials: • Various flower samples • Colored pencils or crayons • Paper • Flower parts identification chart (a good one can be found here: www. britannica.com/science/flower or search online to find your own.)

The Hill School is the only school in southeastern North Carolina designed to specifically address the needs of students with learning disabilities and/or attention deficit disorders. Call to schedule a tour!

(910) 685-3734 • www.HillSchoolofWilmington.org 16 | March 2016 | Wilmington Parent

Instructions: • Choose a flower for your exploration. Lilies, daffodils, pansies, and carnations are all easy flowers to dissect and may be a good starting point. (Remember – flowers in public spaces are there for everyone! Pick flowers from your yard or buy a few for the activity.) • As a family, observe your flower before you begin dissecting. Discuss the various parts you are able to identify without the flower identification chart. • Sketch the flower and begin pulling it apart to find its parts. Label your drawing as you dissect. To continue your exploration, pick a new flower and compare it to your first dissection. Can you find all the parts? How is this flower different or the same? v

Parsley’s Panthers Video Goes Viral Walter L. Parsley Elementary School’s music teacher, Robyn Avery, loves to make music class fun and relevant for her students. In music class, as they were singing “She’ll Be Comin’ Round the Mountain” as a warm up song, Mrs. Avery got the idea that the students might enjoy rewriting the lyrics to the song as a celebration of the Panthers’ playing in the Super Bowl. Together they rewrote the lyrics and came up with moves to illustrate “celebrating like Cam Newton” and “dabbing like the Panthers.” She asked the students to wear their Carolina Panthers colors the following Monday and maybe they could be videotaped performing their song. One week later and the students hadn’t forgotten. They were the ones who reminded Mrs. Avery that their song was going to be recorded. After a couple practices, the song was recorded in one take and then uploaded to Parsley’s Facebook page. Almost immediately, the video began to go viral! Parsley was first contacted by “For the Win”, a part of USA Today Sports, asking for permission to share the post. From there, many other local and national news and sports agencies began sharing the post as well. It has been featured on FOX Sports and Sports Illustrated. The video on Parsley’s Facebook page has received over 10,000 views and 300 shares. However, it’s also been posted separately on FOX Sports Live’s Facebook page because they added lyrics to the video so you can sing along. That post has had over 394,000 views and 6,300 shares.

F

rom whitewater rafting to performing arts and cooking, today’s sleep-away camps appeal to a wide range of interests while still providing the long-term benefits summer camp is known for. And yet, you may wonder how to find an overnight camp that offers the right blend of environment and activities for your child and gives you peace of mind at the same time. Benefits of overnight camp. In addition to learning new skills, children learn how to collaborate and live in community while at camp, gaining self-confidence and independence through problemsolving and teamwork. “...All those things are life skills and life assets that every parent wants for their child,” says Jill Tipograph, a camp consultant and author of Your Everything Summer Guide & Planner.

Popular camp activities. According to the American Camp Association, 75% of camp directors reported adding new activities and programs to accommodate trends in popular culture. The top three activities camps are integrating into their more traditional fare, like campfires, swimming and horseback riding, include performing arts, adventure and more recently, culinary. “Culinary is the hottest and newest in terms of camps investing in building kitchens and bringing in specialists to teach the kids. The other part that goes along with culinary is the whole, farmed table--taking things from the gardens and cooking them,” Tipograph says. Traditional vs. specialty. Specialty camps are designed for kids interested in pursuing a specific interest. Traditional camps, on the other hand, offer a combination of programming. Children can try different activities, including those they may not have tried otherwise, whether stained glass design, rock climbing or singing in a recording studio. “I feel that if children start their camping career on a purely specialty track, (parents) are really missing what camp can do for their child. The advantage traditional camps offer is they are all about the child holistically,” Tipograph says.

Considerations for a successful sleep-away experience: • Maturity. Most kids are ready by ages 9 or 10, but consider your child’s physical and emotional maturity first. • Plan ahead. If possible, start researching camps a year ahead of time. Check out websites, talk to friends and family for recommendations and visit prospective camps. Many overnight camps offer family weekends in the fall. • Length of camp. How long do you want your child away at camp? Camps offer both short and long-term sessions. • Size of camp. Decide whether your child would do better in a large setting or a smaller gathering. • Gender. Choose from a single-sex or a co-ed camp. Not sure which? Consider whether a younger sibling may eventually join your older child at camp. • Location. Determine the types of activities you want your child to experience. Because of their geographical location, some camps offer better outdoor or adventure activities than others and may be more likely to have access to experienced adventure specialists. • Meet the director. A meeting with the director is imperative in order to get a sense of his or her personality, trustworthiness and compatibility. “You need to see how they’re interacting with your child,” Tipograph says. “They set the tone and the philosophy for the camp and it trickles down. How they relate to you and your child is the same way they train their staff to do the same.” Additional resources include ACACamps.org, MaineCampExperience.com, and www.everythingsummer.com. v Freelance journalist Christa Melnyk Hines and her husband are the parents of two boys.
