Water plays an important role in uniting our community, and more than ever, we need to fight to protect it. This month, on March 14th, World Water Day will be celebrated by The North Carolina Coastal Federation when they present the Coastal Ambassador Training. They are inviting participants to Walk the Loop for Clean Water at the Fred and Alice Stanback Coastal Education Center in Wrightsville Beach, NC. Coastal Ambassadors will Walk the Loop and learn about a series of stormwater retrofits that are designed to reduce the volume of polluted runoff that makes its way into local waters. Participants of the program will also learn what the federation is doing to promote low-impact development (LID). Visit www.nccoast.org for more information.
Another way to celebrate our water is by supporting the creatures that live within it. The Fort Fisher Aquarium will be hosting the Weeki Wachee Mermaids again the first 2 Fridays of the month. So while you visit the fictional, beautiful mermaids of Florida, you can support the efforts of the aquarium to protect and educate. Visit www.ncaquariums.com for a complete schedule.

If you’re like most families, you probably invited a lively new guest to join your family. No, I’m not talking about a pet. Alexa has become a fixture in many households and Amazon has been working to make it a little more kid friendly. This past month they held the Alexa Skills Challenge to encourage developers to create Kid Skills. Some of the kid skills that are making parents cheer are these: • Animal Workout - good for keeping busy bodies active, kids become different animals while getting exercise. • Kids Court - when someone is being unfair or nasty, they can bring them to court and let Judge Lexy decide. Kids learn to present their case and speak up for themselves.

PRODUCT REVIEW
Foundmi Bluetooth Trackers Super Heros There are a lot of trackers on the market, I recognize the square tiles everywhere I go. These ones do not appear to be trackers at first glance. They come in popular Star Wars, DC, and Marvel characters, and basically just look like a cool kids keychain. Foundmi trackers are ideal for parents tired of replacing their kids’ backpacks, lunch boxes, and other commonly misplaced items. Foundmi trackers come equipped with a 95 decibel ring sure to be heard across the playground. If mom or dad happen to lose their phone, Foundmi trackers can reverse track it -- even if it’s on silent. Check these out at www.foundmi.com.
GO THE EXTRA MILE for your children
POW! Pasta from Ancient Harvest Ancient Harvest’s POW! Mac & Cheese is a little like eating your childhood comfort food without the guilt. Better yet, it’s more like eating your childhood comfort food and reaping the health benefits. POW is the market’s first legume-andquinoa noodles. That means you get a plant-based protein feast in every bite. I love mac and cheese, but 25 grams of protein and 12 grams of fiber per 3.5 serving means I can actually eat it. Ancient Harvest has 3 varieties: Mild Cheddar Elbows, Sharp Cheddar Shells and White Cheddar Shells – with cheesy, gluten-free, red lentil and quinoa noodles. All three SKUs have less sodium, fat and sugar content than most other non-wheat mac and cheese products and are made from non-GMO and organic ingredients including organic quinoa and cheese.
By Lilla: Arm Party Where is the first place you look for a hair tie? I know where mine are, always on my wrist. I love the convenience, but seriously, black elastic is so ugly. Creating arm parties that double as hair accessories, By Lilla is on a mission to get rid of all ugly hair ties and change the world – one beautiful hair tie at a time. By Lilla has developed a line of hair ties that double as bracelets, and now expanded into a complete collection of hair elastics in a variety of colors and styles. I love that you can stack these up and look like you planned to be fashionable, but I also will say, they work. When I first saw them, I was concerned about them catching and pulling my hair, but they do not. Now I have discovered they have a subscription box, and I think a delivery of hair ties every month is the most useful and fun piece of mail I’ll receive. v

Mean Girl Problems: What Moms Can Do By Christina Katz
T
he best way to make a positive impact on the girl vs. girl trend sweeping the nation is to address and redirect mean girl behavior in our daughters. Like many mothers of daughters I polled, I started noticing mean girl behavior early in my daughter’s public school experience. Ironically, the behavior wasn’t coming from acquaintances, but from girls my daughter considered friends. This brings up an uncomfortable reality: there is not much we can do about mean girl behavior in other people’s kids. So what’s a pro-active mom to do? Take heart. There is much you can do to prevent mean girl behavior in your own daughter. One more girl setting an example of how to be kind and emotionally intelligent, despite peer pressure moving in the opposite direction, can help turn the tide. Only when girls understand that bullying is never acceptable can a better example spread. If your daughter can embody healthier choices, she can help create harmony within her middle school girl tribe. Here are crucial ways moms can prepare daughters to navigate the social pressures of middle school.
Define Meanness. Rudeness, meanness, and bullying exist on a behavior spectrum. Meanness is intentionally hurtful, as opposed to rudeness, which is unintentionally hurtful, as opposed to bullying which is consistently hurtful. One of the problems with mean girl behavior is that it can be subtle, insidious, and elusive. Teach your daughter the difference between the three types of behaviors and how to tell the difference between someone who is consistently, purposefully mean and someone who simply makes a mistake. Make sure your child understands that it’s okay to make mistakes, and that you expect her to be kind regardless of circumstances. Keep talking about what these three behaviors mean on an ongoing basis, until your daughter can tell the difference. Once she knows she always has a choice about how to respond in any situation, you are making good progress.

Teach How To Detach From Drama. Girl vendettas are common in middle school and can ignite for the slightest reasons. Your daughter may empathize with one or both girls and get inadvertently sucked into a feud if she does not know how to avoid one. Teach your daughter to listen to the facts and form her own opinion without getting involved in any drama. Encourage her to not take sides when one girl turns against another, but to be the voice of reason whenever possible. Affirm that girls need to stick together and prop each other up when they are having a bad day without getting overly involved in solving each other’s problems. Once your daughter understands that drama is a distraction from personal priorities, she can more easily steer clear. Model Healthy Communication. Girls often start to lose their authentic voices when they become teenagers. So your job as your daughter’s confidante is to keep the doors of communication open and let her be honest and real with you as she is trying to figure everything out. If your formerly sunshiny girl suddenly turns partly cloudy, don’t fret. She may push you away and not want to talk as much as she used to, but don’t give in to the common misperception that teenagers need to be left alone. Your middleschooler can’t navigate this brave new social world solo. If you expect her to, she is going to feel stressed and look for friends who can help her take the edge off. You have to be there, mom, every day, listening and responsive, whenever either of you wants to talk. v Author, journalist, and writing coach Christina Katz enjoys a close relationship with her daughter despite the fact that her daughter is a teenager. Together they enjoy watching chick flicks, going out to eat, shopping, and talking about life.

WHEN YOUR CHILD DOESN’T LIKE TO READ By Katy Clark
A
gain. I saw it again. Another post on social media from a friend singing the praises of her child who couldn’t stop reading. How lucky am I? she wrote. My son finished Harry Potter and he’s only in second grade! You are lucky, I thought, damping down my jealousy. My son hates reading. He loathes it with a passion unseen since he lost a game of Candy Land to me when he was three years old. I can’t exactly post, “My son hates reading!” on social media, though. He’s a teenager now, and I’ve waited years to admit publicly how much he hates reading. I felt that my son’s lack of interest in reading meant that I was a bad mother, that I had failed somehow. However, the truth is kinder to me than I am to myself: reading is a pursuit that he is not passionate about. He can read. He doesn’t like to read. There is a difference. Ever since he was born, I tried to instill in him a love of reading. In no particular order, here are the word-nurturing, pro-book, literature-lovin’ experiences I exposed him to: • I read in front of him. I love to read! • I read to him. Daily from birth until third grade. • I took him to the library. • I took him to story time at the library. • I signed him up for the summer reading program at the library.
• I took him to the bookstore. • I made sure his daycare was a developmentally-appropriate, NAEYCaccredited child care center that was chock full of book nooks, story times, and language-enrichment activities. • I signed those homework reading logs that came home every night from kindergarten through sixth grade. • I chatted with him about books. For years, I’ve felt bad about his lack of fervor for reading, especially during the dreaded “March is Reading month.” Until one day I stopped. It was the day a mom came over to pick up her child from a play date with my youngest (who loves to read, by the way). I don’t remember how the topic of my son’s lack of interest in reading came up, but she shared her thoughts. “I hate reading, too,” she commented. “It was never social enough for me. I always wanted to be doing something else.” Here she was, a successful Vice President at an international company with three lovely children, confessing that reading wasn’t for her. It was a relief. It was the first voice I heard that defied the cacophony telling me that I must get my child to love reading. That day I allowed myself to believe, to embrace even, that my son could succeed in life even though he doesn’t like to read. Reading is not for my son. However, what is for my son is socializing with friends and family, chatting with anyone he meets, participating in classroom discussions, being a leader, playing sports, and being pretty great. That’s something worthy of a social media brag post. v

BUSINESS SHOWCASE
4 Time-Saving Tips for Disney Parks A
lmost everyone planning a trip to Walt Disney World is concerned about, it’s crowds. We’ve all heard tales of long lines for everything from major attractions to bathrooms, but with some smart planning and your smartphone, you’ll spend less time waiting in line and more time making memories.
Get There Early “But we’re on vacation!” you’re probably thinking. “I want to sleep in!” Disney World is one place where the early bird really does get the worm, though. Arrive at the gates before the park opens for “Rope Drop.” Often, you can experience several attractions before other guests even find their way out of bed.
Use FastPass + A FastPass basically holds your place in line while you do other things in the park. You can select up to three attractions to schedule in up to 60 days in advance. Choose a time when you want to ride, then head to the attraction when it’s time, scan your Magic Band or admission ticket, and ride with a minimal wait. Once you use your first three FastPasses, you can schedule more using the app. You can only plan one attraction at a time, but it’s still a huge time saver.
Use Mobile Ordering At select Quick Service dining locations throughout Walt Disney World resort, you can take advantage of Mobile Ordering via MyDisneyExperience. Simply select the restaurant, order your food and pay using a credit card or Disney Dining Plan credits on your phone. When you’re ready to eat, head to the restaurant and follow Cast Member instructions to collect your meal. No need to stand in line to order!
Escape to Your Resort Typically, Disney parks are most crowded in the afternoon. Later in the day, head back to your resort for a few hours to escape the biggest crowds and heat of the day. Take a nap or a swim. Return around dinner time, and you’ll usually find a less crowded park. All of my guests receive planning tips like this before they travel, including weekly email tips. FAMILY TRAVEL
COLD WEATHER CAMPING
I
know some of you went and turned up your heat at just the thought of spending the night outside with only the thin, filmy protection of a tent. Very few see this time of year as an opportunity to enjoy the outdoors in its most peaceful state: glittering with frost and devoid of people and mosquitos. Keep an open mind! Late winter and early spring are perfect times to head out to the wilderness and enjoy the outdoors before the summer crowds descend. Unfortunately, many places in North Carolina close for the winter, but www.getgoingNC.com has found a few that stay open year-round.
New River State Park
Tips for Families
Where: 358 New River State Park Road, Laurel Springs, N.C. No. of campsites: 45 Cost: $13 Stuff to do nearby: paddling
• Use a 4 season tent and be prepared for quick changing weather. The vents and construction of the tent are specific for dealing with cooler temperatures and do make the whole process warmer.
North Mills River Where: N. Mills River Road (SR 1345) 4.7 miles from NC 191, near Mills River, N.C. No. of campsites: 31 Cost: $17 Stuff to do nearby: hiking, mountain biking, fishing.
South Mountains State Park Where: 3001 South Mountain Park Ave., Connelly Springs, N.C. No. of campsites: 11 Cost: $13 Stuff to do nearby: hiking, horseback riding, mountain biking, fishing
• Absolutely use sleeping pads with heavy fleece blankets. Do NOT use a blow-up air mattress. The extra pockets of air will actually make it much colder. • Try a family/double sleeping bag. That extra body heat helps a ton. • Be smart about staying warm while sleeping. Wear long underwear, wool socks and a hat on your head. Remember that you will be sleeping in that hat, so one that is low-profile is a lot easier. • If you are having a campfire (which is pretty much required) remember to wear clothing that you are ok with getting some burn holes in. You hope it doesn’t happen, but sparks from the fire can easily burn tiny holes that are much more destructive in winter clothing. • If eating dinner outside, think about foods that can be eaten with mittens on. Simple hot dogs and S’mores are a safe bet. • Prepare hot drinks in travel mugs. You will be so happy you did this! • BE POSITIVE! Be happy, excited and totally into it. The kids will follow suit. v

Physical Skills Fitness. If your child is a passionate about virtual realities, camp is the perfect motivation to get off the couch and get moving. You will be pleased when your child returns home tan, fit and inspired to keep moving. Safety awareness. Do you find yourself fretting about your child’s wellbeing? Then send her to camp to learn about first aid, water safety, and other safety protocols that go hand-and-hand with learning new things. When she gets home, she can teach you a thing or two about safety awareness. Healthy risk-taking. Is your child an adrenaline junkie? Do you worry that she will go too far testing the limits of what’s humanly possible? Camp is the perfect place to wear out a child with excess energy. Counselors can help campers channel a zest for risks into safe outlets while honoring camp rules.
Intellectual Skills Decision-making. Does your child waffle when making decisions, take polls of other people’s opinions or go along with the crowd too easily? Then camp is the perfect practice-ground to determine what he wants and needs on a regular basis. Choosing is a crucial ability for creating satisfaction in life. Accountability. Do you wonder if you do too much for your child? Whether she has to pack her own backpack for an overnight hiking trip or show up wearing activity-appropriate shoes, being prepared for what’s coming next in life is important. When it comes to accountability, daily practice is always on tap at camp. Time management. If your child is often running late, camp is a great
www.wilmingtonparent.com
place to learn timeliness. Your child will swiftly master punctuality when engaged in activities she enjoys. And this proactive habit can carry over into everyday life during the rest of the year.
Emotional Skills Self-care. Kids can’t learn to take care of their needs unless they learn to pay attention to them. Going to camp puts kids’ self-care muscles to the test. Navigating a new environment with unfamiliar people helps kids learn to trust their intuition and honor their instincts. Playfulness. Got a perfectionist kid on your hands? Sometimes within the rush and rigors of daily life, families forget how to relax and enjoy life to the fullest. Camp is a great place to remember how to lighten up and enjoy the day. Grit. This trendy term means the combination of courage and resolve. If your child does not bounce back quickly from disappointments, camp is a great place to learn tenacity, conflict resolution and problem solving.
Occupational Skills Collaboration. Perhaps during the school year, teamwork is limited to sports and cooperation is confined to the classroom. At camp, every endeavor from cleaning a cabin to climbing a rock face becomes a new way to understand the importance of working together. Negotiating. Your kids benefit from learning how to sort things out between themselves at camp. Discussing, bargaining, and coming to agreements that make sense for everyone involved is tool for creating a richer life. Leadership. Camp provides opportunities for kids to discover and nurture the leader inside. Every child is a boss at something. You may not think of a prolific reader as a leader, but what a terrific example she can set at camp for those who avoid books altogether. v Author, journalist and writing coach Christina Katz spent ample time outdoors as a child, which fostered her love of nature, gardening and trees. She believes children of all ages deserve to regularly experience the wonders and richness of the wilds.

YOUR HEALTH
WOMEN AND RUNNING INJURIES
S
cientific research suggests women get more running injuries than men, due to various factors regarding the structure and mechanics of women’s bodies. Here are a few common injuries, and how to avoid them.
Less experienced runners are more prone. New scientific evidence now explain this condition to be due to repeated stress across the front of the tibia which gradually resolves as the bone thickens once the beginner runner gets more used to running.
Patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS)
How to avoid injury: Avoid running once the pain develops as persevering can result in stress syndromes / fractures. Build up a running routine and pace gradually, allowing the bone and muscles to condition itself. Strengthening the calf and shin muscles helps reduce the impact on the bone as you run, and helps reduce the risk of shin splints. There is weak evidence to suggest supportive shoes or running on a soft surface is truly protective.
This condition is characterised by pain beneath the kneecap (patella). It is caused by the contact of the back of the knee cap with the thigh bone. Women runners, in particular, have been shown to have weaker hip abductors and external rotator muscles that contribute to poor knee cap tracking and PFPS. How to avoid injury: PFPS can be prevented with hip and quadriceps strengthening exercises (lying down sideways and lifting leg away from midline, straight-leg raise exercise, and side-lying clamshell exercise). Icing after runs and using traditional or flexible athletic tapes on either side of the kneecap is also beneficial.
Stress fractures A seemingly innocuous activity like running can result in stress fractures, as its repetitive loading can surpass the strength of even normal bones. Stress fractures are more common in high-intensity female runners and those with high arched feet or tight calf muscles. How to avoid injury: Constant and localised pain in the lower leg or foot should alert a runner to the possibility of a stress fracture. Consult an orthopaedic foot surgeon if in doubt. It is important to avoid running until the fracture has healed, support the injured foot with an orthotic (insole, wedge or heel cup) and wear supportive shoes.
Medial tibial stress syndrome or ‘shin splints’ Typically resulting in pain across the inside of the shin, this condition is classically associated with runners, with women having a slightly higher prevalence than men.

Plantar fasciitis This condition irks most runners due to its prevalence and stubborn nature. It typically causes pain in the bottom of the heel, worse with the first step out of bed in the morning and can often persist for months or years before resolving. Plantar fasciitis is more in those with flat feet, those who are overweight and those who have had the condition before. It is caused by degeneration of the foot’s arch-supporting band of tissue. How to avoid injury: Avoid running for a short period. Use customised heel cups in shoes. Stretching exercises are critical when treating plantar fasciitis, in particular calf stretches and plantar fascia stretches (flex the big toe up to accentuate the arch of your foot). Stretching should be done at regular intervals during the day and it is best to do them just before standing up when seated for prolonged periods or before getting out of bed. Supportive shoes with an in-built arch and the use of night splints, even temporarily, are useful. v Source: Mount Elizabeth: Health Plus
