re you a modern mama? Or do you prefer to keep to old traditions of motherhood? There was a time when all new moms had to make that choice. Although not everything is this world, and certainly not all aspects of motherhood, are blending the old with the new seamlessly, I’ve seen some refreshing trends. My children are way past the baby stage, so while putting together this year’s issue for new moms, I was pleasantly surprised! Breastfeeding, cloth diapers, working moms, and sleep deprivation. Some of these aspects of the mommy stage of life go together, and some do not. However, technology and old ideas revived are bringing previously unheard of concepts together. Now moms are using cloth diapers like it’s the latest trend. Breastfeeding mommies are able to go to work and use new technology to not miss a feeding. Sleep deprivation is not an absolute part of motherhood, there are new ways. Visit these encouraging combinations with me in May’s issue of Mothers, Babies, and Toddlers.

The only way to avoid finding a fun, outdoor activity this month is to actively run and hide from them, and even then, I doubt you could avoid them. There are so many festivals, hikes, outdoor learning experiences, movies, and concerts that I may have to draw from a hat to choose where to go next! After making a priority list of can’t miss activities, I want to point out one that should be on all our lists, at least once this season. The Carolina Beach Carnivorous Plant Hike is an opportunity, every Saturday and Sunday at 10am, to enjoy nature with a park ranger and view the world of plants that bite back -- sundews, bladderworts, pitcher plants, and the famous Venus fly trap. Meet at the end of Nature Trail Lane in Carolina Beach State Park. This is free and no registration is needed. This is the home stretch y’all, school is almost over! Some local schools have their last day this month, others will be done the beginning of June. So if you and the little ones are barely hanging on, try taking a Peace, Love, and Music break! On May 19th from noon to 3pm, at Wrightsville Beach Brewery, come out and enjoy Kidstock: 3 Hours of Peace, Love, & Kid’s Music featuring Misfits & Monsters Family Group and Revolver Music Productions providing entertainment including Rainbow Bridge and others. There will also be vendors, games and other activities at this free event! May is the month to celebrate all Mothers, but do you find yourself anxiously wondering what your brood will come up with on Mother’s Day morning for your special breakfast? Maybe you can leave a few hints around the house to guide them in the right direction, and let’s be honest, you probably want to stock the fridge with food you like before the big event. Here is an idea that the kids could handle with minimal help: Fancy Breakfast Toast Toast and topping options are almost endless. Here are a few ideas to get the kids started: • Swirl on honey-sweetened ricotta cheese. Then add sliced fruit. • Layer peanut butter or almond butter, sliced banana, and a sprinkle of cinnamon. • Spread on a bit of softened butter and add thinly sliced hard-boiled egg. • Peel, pit, and smash an avocado, smear on top, and sprinkle with a little salt. • Cover with whipped cream cheese and top with smoked salmon. Sprinkle with chopped dill for extra credit. Most of these tasks can be accomplished with a butter knife, but kids should enlist a grown-up for help peeling and pitting the avocado. Start a tradition this summer! Every Sunday at dusk, at Carolina Beach Lake Park, bring the family for some outdoor family together time and a movie. Bring your own picnic, or purchase snacks once you get there. Give your kids something to look forward to every week! Lansinoh Nursie Breastfeeding Pillow If there is one thing I noticed when my babies were born, my arms are not as strong as I thought. More likely, I was using different muscles while holding an infant in various positions all day long. So this breastfeeding pillow peaked my interest as it was designed by a breastfeeding mom to help provide comfortable positioning for baby and mom to support successful breastfeeding. Built to help with comfortable positioning, latch and feeding, everyone is more at ease and with less tension, there is better feeding. Another benefit, it is very compact and portable so there is easy feeding at home or on the go. Check these out at Lansinoh.com

UpSpring BumpTube Pregnancy Belly Band Have you ever just wanted someone to carry your belly for you, just a little while? The Belly Band kinda does just that by supporting and gently lifting your growing pregnant belly. This helps relieve lower back pain and even pressure on the bladder. The Flexible fabric expands with each stage of pregnancy and also can provide additional support while exercising. If adding another layer of clothes, especially in the summer heat, seems absolutely unbearable, this concern has been addressed. The Belly Band is soft, breathable, and has moisture-wicking fabric that molds to your body, keeping you cool while maintaining constant support. Give them a try at UpSpringBaby.com v

Misconceptions About Foster Care F
or many people, the foster care system is a bit of a mystery. They don’t know any children in the system or any families who provide foster care. Their only experience with foster care is through the stories they hear on the news, which often describe negative situations that have occurred. In order to combat the negative views some have of foster care, I spoke to several foster families about the common misconceptions they hear. Some relate to foster care in general and others are from people who have considered fostering, but have worried about certain aspects of it.
1. Foster parents do it for the money We always hear the stories about a rotten apple or two who ruin it for the bunch, but unless foster parents are being grossly negligent, this one is just plain laughable. Yes, foster families get paid, but they are paid in order to cover the costs of caring for the child. A foster family makes a certain amount a day, depending on what state they live in. That money covers food, clothing, and supplies, including diapers, wipes, toys, and all the other things that go along with having a child in your home. More often than not, a foster family will spend much more than the state pays in order to provide for the child in their care.
2. The process is strenuous and invasive As one foster parent put it, “DHHS isn’t trying to find fault with you, your house, or your parenting. They need you more than you need them, and they don’t want to drive foster parents away.” The training and home study are a free and fairly easy process, and in normal situations, a social worker won’t be at your door every five seconds to check up on you.
3. Foster parents have no say in who they foster If you’ve considered doing foster care, but have worried that every time the phone rings you’ll have to say ‘yes’, rest assured that isn’t the case. If the timing isn’t right, you can always decline without hurting your chances of getting a placement later. You can also tell DHHS your preferences in terms of the age of the children you foster. This isn’t being picky; often your work situation as well as the make-up of your family (ages and genders of biological or adopted children) need to be considered when bringing another child into your home.
4. “I could never do foster care. I’d love them too much to give them up.” This one needs to be broken down into a couple of parts in order to dispel the multiple myths it creates. Let’s get the obvious one out of the way first: It’s a bit insulting if said to a foster parent. Foster families don’t have a special switch they can flip on and off to stop them from feeling. Watching my friends who do foster care, I can tell you with absolute certainty that they love these children as their own and it breaks their hearts when a child in their care has to leave. Here’s the thing though: They don’t do it for themselves. They do it for the children who need them. Foster care requires a selfless love that could very well break your heart, but when you think of what you’re providing for that child, it is more than worth it. “I could never do foster care.” I’m guilty of having said those words and I bet many of you are too. Certainly there are families who are unable or unwilling to make that commitment for any number of reasons, and it’s not a decision to make lightly. However, after watching my friends do foster care, I have come to realize that it is not as scary or undoable as I imagined it to be. There is a huge need for foster families and you might be exactly who a child needs. For more information, contact the foster home licensing unit of New Hanover County Department of Social Services at (910) 798-3566 at amoore@nhcgov.com. v Lauren Cormier is a freelance writer and founder of the parenting website, Oh, Honestly.

FAMILY TRAVEL
OUTER BANKS
FAMILY FUN J
ust a day’s drive up the coast offer a completely different beach experience than what you can find here in the Cape Fear Region. The Outer Banks are a cluster of barrier islands that each offer unique opportunities and excitement for all members of the family. From wild horses, dolphin adventures, and even a water park, the entire family will find adventure! Here are a few ideas to get you started on a memorable vacation.
ice cream and snowballs, arts and crafts, music, large vehicles, and more. The Roanoke Island Historical Society also begins their weekly production of The Lost Colony at the Waterside Theater. This show features epic battles and Indian dances that tell the story of Virginia Dare and the legendary lost colony. Visit www.thelostcolony.org for ticket information.
Duck, NC
For children with a true sandcastle building talent, there are several Outer Banks annual sandcastle contest events, at Jockey’s Ridge State Park in Nags Head and on Ocracoke Island, generally held on the 4th of July. Even if your brood is not avid sand castle builders, these annual competitions and displays are ideal places to get inspired, with sand sculptures ranging from mammoth sea creatures to mermaids, and First Flight commemoratives to local lighthouses.
The Town of Duck is one of the Outer Banks northernmost communities, with some of the narrowest stretches of the barrier islands, and also one of the most popular destinations. This unusual island allows you splendid views of both the sunrise and sunset from one location. Duck is also famous for its walking and cycling trails that offer access to the beautiful stretch of beach. While visiting the kids can traverse the shallow surf and along the low tide line, to discover an ocean of critters. Sand crabs, or sand daggers, and colorful coquina clams that routinely dig and submerge in the ocean wash are easy to find. Bring a pail and shovel along for quick collecting and study, but be sure and leave all of your marine life at the shore at the end of the day.
Roanoke Island On Friday, May 11th from 9:30am--12:30pm in Manteo, the Youth Partnership for Dare County will hold its 11th Annual KidsFest at Roanoke Island Festival Park in Manteo. This annual event is a free and fun-filled day where children, ages five and under, can enjoy face painting, bubbles,

Kitty Hawk If you plan your visit to Kitty Hawk for National Aviation Day on August 19th you will gain free admission to the Wright Brothers National Memorial, site of the first powered flight. While you’re there, let the kids find out why Orville and Wilbur Wright came to the Outer Banks to test out their 1902 airplane- the wind conditions on the Outer Banks are second to none for flying machines. Bring your kite along or purchase one at your local souvenir shop for an afternoon of high flying. Several big name retailers, like Kitty Hawk Kites, also offer stunt kites for more intricate and challenging action on the sand. v

FORE Our Furry Friends Golf Tournament The 2018 Pender Humane Society FORE Our Furry Friends Golf Tournament is proudly hosted by Sunny 103.7’s Suzanne Jalot, at Olde Point Golf & Country Club on May 12th. Pender Humane Society is a NO KILL Shelter serving Pender, New Hanover, Duplin & Onslow counties. By supporting this golf tournament, you can have a direct impact on the rescue & care of these animals, and ultimate placement in their furever homes. The Staff and volunteers of Pender Humane love our four-legged furry friends, and want to have as great an impact on those unfortunate ones who are being abused, abandoned or who would be euthanized at other facilities. Additional information regarding the event, as well as online registration, can be viewed at: www.2018FOFFgolf.com
The 4th Annual Derby4Dogs This event on May 5th from 4-7pm at Porters Neck Country Club features a Puppy Derby, viewing of the Kentucky Derby horse race, silent auction, cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, and prizes for the Best Derby Hat and Bowtie. Proceeds benefit Paws4People, a local non-profit that educates and empowers people to use Assistance Dogs to transform their lives.
Create a dog-friendly backyard Map out your yard with your dog in mind. Soft foliage, sturdy turfgrass, smooth stones, and dog toys can help your pet feel at home. Add a water station so your pet can hydrate after some time playing. A fun water feature can help your pooch cool off when it’s hot. Plan for fun. Set up an area for your dog to dig, such as a digging box or digging bed. Add chew toys in the dirt (leave one poking out) to help your dog get the idea. Use plants to give your dog a sense of boundaries. Place plants close together in areas you want to designate as off-limits and train your dog to avoid them. Leave open areas for your dog to run and play in (and accept that is what your dog will do). Avoid toxic plants that can be harmful to your pet. Dogs do not naturally avoid plants that are toxic to them and many will eat plants that are not safe for consumption. A few common toxic plants for dogs are: carnations, chrysanthemums, daffodils, hostas, ivy, lilies, morning glories, tomatoes, and tulips. Look for hazards and eliminate them. Some paved or sandy surfaces may get too hot for your pet to walk on comfortably. Tiny pebbles, thorns, or gravel can get caught in paws. Ensure your pet’s main play area includes grass. Check your fence. A fence is an important safety feature for your pet. Make sure your fence is solid and do any needed repairs. If you use an invisible fence, make sure it is properly working and that your pet knows the boundaries. Set up for shade (and naps). Your dog will need a place to relax after a busy day of play. A tree or bush can provide shade for your pet.
Pet of the Month
Meet Susuwatari (Susu for short) *means Soot Sprite*. She is a Sphynx and only 5 months old! This little bit was adopted by mommy Manny and her human sister, Leigh Lu and chameleon sister, Little Princess. Susu loves sleeping in and cuddling under the covers, drinking out of any unattended glass of water, and hunting and gathering hair ties. She is still not a fan of baths, the sound of the vacuum, and walking with a harness on a leash (even though it’s hilarious). Susu is really good at hide and seek. Once after frantically searching for over an hour, her family found her in a back corner of a closed closet, fast asleep and buried beneath a pile of blankets!
We all love to show off our nonhuman family members, and now is your chance to have a bigger audience! Send in your pet photos to danielle.wilmingtonparent@gmail.com with a little information about their unique personality and how they fit in to your family, and they may be featured in an upcoming issue! www.wilmingtonparent.com

NAMING BABY
SPECIAL SECTION: Maternity, Baby & Toddlers
Tips to Manage Opinionated Feedback
W
ith the debate that erupts around naming babies, expectant parents may wonder: How much should popular trends and other’s opinions influence our decision? And, how should we manage negative feedback for the name we choose? Laura Wattenberg, author of The Baby Name Wizard, says parents should consider their objectives when choosing a name. You might select a name to honor a friend or family member or simply because it sings to your heart, regardless of current trends. How will the name you bequeath impact your child down the road? “It wouldn’t be fair to your child to choose a name that all of his future friends and family absolutely loathe,” Wattenberg says. Although you rely on your friends and family for their honesty, advice and perspective, you get to make the final decision and you may not be able to please everyone.
Keep your cool. If you hear negative feedback, stay calm and avoid getting defensive. “Explain the history, the meaning to you, the love you have for a certain name,” says Sharon O’Neill, a marriage and family psychotherapist and author of A Short Guide to a Happy Marriage. “Then nicely explain that you understand that others may not see it as you do, but that you would ask that everyone be supportive. Anything less would never be good for any child to eventually feel.”
Suggest nicknames. Try appeasing a disappointed family member by
them very much so I didn’t want to name my child after them. My mother wouldn’t refer to my son by his name for about a month,” Weiland says. Weiland gave her mother time to come around to her son’s name and advises other parents to do the same. “This is your child. You are going through a lot of big changes and sleepless nights. No one has a right to demand a particular name and give you more stress,” she says.
Politely ignore. What do you do about strangers who disparage your child’s name? Lisa Cash Hanson and her husband chose the name Matilda for their daughter because they felt it was unique. “It was something in my heart that she would be named Matilda and it stuck,” says Hanson, who is an author, business coach and founder of MompreneurMogul.com. She was surprised when her daughter’s name didn’t ring well with others. Friends, family and even strangers, made faces and said, “that’s too old fashioned” or “she is going to get picked on in school” and worse, “that name is ugly.” “We’re seeing an epidemic of bad baby-name manners,” Wattenberg says. “As names become more diverse and creative, there’s simply less agreement on what makes a good name. If someone is flat-out rude, chilly politeness and a change of subject is the best move.”
offering an olive branch in the form of a nickname. “Grandparents or an aunt or other family members may have a nickname that they use in their special relationship with your child,” O’Neill says.
Hello...My name is____. Many parents say the best strategy they’ve found to manage feedback is to say nothing at all or plead indecision and announce the baby’s name after the birth. At that point, the focus will be on your adorable baby, and her name may seem less up for debate. v
Give it time. Stacy Weiland also met resistance from her mother when she decided on her son’s name, which is Andrew. “My mother wanted me to name him after my grandmother and grandfather. But I didn’t like

How much money you can save will depend partially on how many cloth diapers you want to have and which kind you buy. You can buy one-step cloth diapers that don’t require inserts, although they’ll cost a little more. On average though, you can expect to spend about $7 to $20 on a good, long-lasting, great-fitting cloth diaper. Let’s say you went for the most expensive cloth diapers you could find at $20 a pop. Considering you want to have about 8 to 10 diapers available to use for a single day, you’ll probably want a stash of at least 24 cloth diapers. The big drawback to using cloth diapers is that it does require a bigger upfront investment. But that number doesn’t have to be that high if you’re struggling with your funds -- you can make do with 16 diapers for now and add more when you get the money or you can buy diapers that aren’t as expensive. The big savings will come in the second year. While other parents are still buying package after package of diapers, you’ll have your diaper stash already purchased, ready to go.
Designer Labels and Cute Designs Yep. Collecting the latest and trendiest cloth diaper covers have become a huge deal. Bumkins, is one brand that offers prints including DC Comics and Dr. Seuss. The Bum Genius brand has prints that are in such high demand, like the Steve Irwin print or Audrey print, that moms will travel hours to find these elusive and exclusive designs. Sound a little crazy? Don’t worry. If you are not interested in competing in this challenge, cloth diaper covers come in all different fabrics, styles, and features. You can even pick up a stash to get you started at local dealers right here in Wilmington.
Be A Friend of The Planet Even without the landfill issue on the table, cloth diapers simply require less resources to produce compared to disposables. That appeals to parents who are interested in fighting ozone layer depletion and reducing the environmental strain on the planet.
Less Harmful Chemicals There are a slew of materials and chemicals used in disposable diapers that some parents may not want nestled up against their babies’ bottoms.
Easier Potty Training As sad as parents can get about seeing their baby grow up, there’s one milestone we’re all kind of glad to say goodbye to -- the diaper phase. Ditching the diapers saves parents money and you don’t have to take out the garbage as frequently. With disposables, even when children pee they still feel dry because of super absorbent polymers. They suck the moisture away from your child’s bottom immediately when they pee, keeping them dry. That’s good when it comes to cutting down on irritation on their bottoms, but not so great when it comes to potty training. v

New Innovations for the Freemie Created with goal to help mothers struggling with being a new mother, wanting to breastfeed, but also needing to return to work, Freemie uses ltechnology to develop breast pumps and accessories that are affordable, efficient, easy to use and allow women to pump anywhere. While most breast pumps and accessories use hard plastic cups, an air suction system, and are often loud and sometimes painful, Freemie’s are the opposite. Their innovative line of collection cups and breast pumps allow mothers to pump hand free, with their shirt on, and allows convenience and privacy that is compatible with their modern life.

Lansinoh Double Electric Smart Pump This pump uses Bluetooth technology to connect seamlessly to the Lansinoh Baby App to track pumping sessions, baby’s activities and more. Lansinoh simplifies your pumping routine with three customizable pumping styles, and mimics baby’s natural feeding pattern to maximize milk production and comfort. Another helpful feature is the hygienic closed system design that guarantees no milk backup in the tubing or motor for easier cleaning.
Lactalite Lactalite is a breast pump illumination tool created by a father who watched his wife struggle to see whether or not she was producing milk while pumping. We know pumping requires a lot of parts so juggling a breast shield and bottle with one hand and the LED light of her iPhone in the other, they both agreed that there was a better way. With lactalite, you clip the battery powered soft glow illumination to help visual confirmation. Because of this handy dad invention, moms can now do their middle-of-the-night pumps without needing to turn on bright blinding lights and be satisfied to see their milk flow during pumps. v

COPING WITH POSTPARTUM
DEPRESSION U
nlike the baby blues, postpartum depression is a more serious problem—one that you shouldn’t ignore. However, it’s not always easy to distinguish between the two.
In the beginning, postpartum depression can look like the normal baby blues. In fact, postpartum depression and the baby blues share many symptoms, including mood swings, crying jags, sadness, insomnia, and irritability. The difference is that with postpartum depression, the symptoms are more severe (such as suicidal thoughts or an inability to care for your newborn) and longer lasting. • You might find yourself withdrawing from your partner or being unable to bond well with your baby. • You might find your anxiety out of control, preventing you from sleeping—even when your baby is asleep—or eating appropriately. • You might find feelings of guilt or worthlessness overwhelming or begin to develop thoughts preoccupied with death or even wish you were not alive. These are all red flags for postpartum depression. The first thing you need to do is discuss your feelings with your doctor. Below are some important things to remember while you work your way through this temporary phase of your life. • You will not always feel this way. • You must take care of yourself and you need to follow through, whether you feel like it or not.
26 | May 2018 | Wilmington Parent
• If medication is part of your treatment plan, you need to take the medication – whether you are breastfeeding or not. Discuss any concerns you have with your doctor and then decide whether you will continue breastfeeding or whether you will wean. Either way, take your medicine if it has been prescribed for you. • Do not let the noise in your head sway you from doing what you need to do. It may feel like you have no energy but you do. It may feel as if you have no power left, but you do. • Pick a person you trust and listen to them. Do not question the veracity of their words. Let yourself believe that this person can help guide you through the darkness and then, stop fighting against them. • You need to keep moving forward through this, even if you don’t feel like it. Get up when you don’t feel like getting out of bed. Go outside even if the sunshine is too bright for your weary eyes. Eat even though you may not be hungry. Rest even when you are not tired. Try to turn off the chatter in your brain. Distract yourself. Count backwards from 300. Take a walk. Call a friend. Avoid caffeine. Avoid alcohol. Avoid people and things that make you feel bad. • Your depression is not your friend. It is an illness that confuses you and distorts your thinking. Do not forget this. Challenge the illness, not those who are there to help you. Take your pills, no matter how you feel about having to take them. Remember that your fight is against the illness, not against yourself or those who support you. • Believe that you will feel better again. v

Zane Dash, a sophomore at Isaac Bear Early College, was announced as a winner at the North Carolina Science and Engineering Fair (NCSEF) competition, which was recently held at North Carolina State University. In the Senior Division (grades 9-12), twelve individual or team projects, consisting of 18 students, were selected as Grand Award winners and will represent the NCSEF at the INTEL International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) in Pittsburgh, PA, on May 13-18, 2018. ISEF is the largest international science competition in the world drawing 1,800 students from across the US and 75 other countries. Students will compete for awards and prizes totaling $4 million. Over 300 STEM student researchers, grades 3-12, from across the state, defended their research projects to 140 judges from the STEM business, education, and governmental organizations. Based on seven STEM research categories, 60 awards from business, education, government, and non-profit STEM partners, were awarded. NCSEF Director Judy Day said, “Our local and regional teachers and fair directors from across North Carolina continue to raise the standards for student research in all STEM areas. Our judges continue to share their enthusiasm for the innovation and quality of student work as evidenced in their student interviews.”
Pender Early College Pilots ALICE Training
“If an active shooter were to come into the room, do you think you could get out of the room and survive?” That’s the question Pender EMS Training Chief David Dudding, Pender County Sheriff’s Office Capt. James Rowell and Sgt. Eric Wallen asked staff and students at Pender Early College High School during ALICE Training on Friday, April 13. Only a few hands raised. ALICE -- which stands for Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, Evacuate -- is a training program that equips people with skills to increase their chances of survival during an active shooter situation. “ALICE training allows students and staff to experience realistic training scenarios and gives them the opportunity to practice ALICE concepts in a safe, controlled environment,” Capt. Rowell said. “They come in with an expectation of what the training will be and leave the course with the realization that they can decide what options increase their personal safety in any given situation.” At the end of the training, Capt. Rowell asked students and staff the same question they were asked when they arrived. Nearly every hand raised. “Instead of being scared about what could happen, we now feel empowered and prepared,” said Karli Mikula, PECHS teacher. Pender County Schools is piloting ALICE at Pender Early College High School.
