hen I think back on this year, I realize that I can not name one specific moment I am most thankful for. I am simply thankful that all the good times this year have outweighed the bad. If that happens every year, I think that must be considered a successful year. This season we have many opportunities to show our gratitude for what we have by helping others in our community. Find inspiration in our Have You Heard section this month by reading about a local student who was able to help another child all the way across the world. Also, find information about how you can help right here in our community by attending the Good Friends of Wilmington Fundraiser Luncheon. This local organization is valuable in assisting those who need it the most. With the beginning of the holiday season upon us, we also start to think about upcoming get togethers with families. Prepare yourself and your family for a memorable time with loved ones by reading the article on page 20, Manners Magic. Hopefully a few reminders on basic manners will help the memories be pleasant ones. Everyone mark your calendars for November 21st and Wilmington Parent’s 8th Annual Education Fair! This year the fair will be held at Independence Mall from 10am-3pm. It may seem early to start thinking about next year’s school placements, but planning ahead is the best way to ensure a successful year! Happy Thanksgiving!

he holidays are here! Wilmington is such a wonderful place to live during this time of the year. We really know how to celebrate! I’ve always thought it was so appropriate to start the holiday season with Thanksgiving. Before we get too deep into the shopping and presents, I love taking time to be thankful for what I have. There are many ways to teach kids the art of thankfulness and giving back to others. I believe storytelling is one of the best techniques for getting them to stop, listen and understand the importance of doing good things. There is a beautiful little book by Carol McCloud and Katherine Martin called Fill a Bucket that teaches young children the value of good deeds. After reading the story, reinforce the message by asking kids to write down good deeds on slips of paper and put them in small tin buckets labeled with family members’ names. Pretty soon, kids will be clambering to see who can fill up their bucket first.

Another way to teach children about philanthropy is to set a good example in our own lives. Lindsay Harkey, a PR Committee member for a local non-profit organization called Good Friends of Wilmington, wants to let Wilmington know of an opportunity for women to give back to the community. Good Friends of Wilmington will hold their 19th annual fundraising luncheon on Tuesday, December 8, 2015 at the Wilmington Convention Center. This festive event, that celebrates the spirit of giving and promotes holiday cheer, will begin at 11:30 AM with a social, holiday music, and a luncheon. Good Friends of Wilmington is a private, non-profit, nondenominational group of women organized for the purpose of raising funds. The funds provide financial assistance to social service organizations or individuals when other resources have been exhausted. The Good Friends Santa’s will be on hand to help raise funds as well. The Santas are the only men invited to this event and each serves as a community leader, business leader or elected official. In addition to providing entertainment during the luncheon, the Santas help collect donations and spare change from the guests. Visit www.goodfriendsofwilmington.org for more information. A local teacher is also showing her students that no matter how young, you can still make a difference! Friends School of Wilmington Teacher Julia Tarquinio established a goal to help her students become the best versions of themselves. The lesson: small acts of kindness can affect the world. Already this year, her students are on their way to changing the life of a little boy in Kenya named Daniel. One of Teacher Julia’s students, Jack Ellison, decided to send money he had been saving to help an orphan across the world. The Amani Children’s Foundation, in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, raises money for abandoned infants orphaned by HIV and poverty in Kenya. Jack sent his money to Amani, who channeled it to their partner in Kenya, New Life Homes. The orphanage is using the money to help a young deaf orphan named Daniel travel to the United States to receive cochlear implants. Jack and his classmates were excited to learn that a fifth grader could have such a large impact on someone’s life. “I learned that with a little, small thing, you can do a really big thing,” says Jack. He has been inspired to raise more money to help pay for Daniel’s postsurgery therapy, Jack collects donations from his fellow Friends School classmates in an envelope each week. To help Daniel and other orphaned infants at New Life Homes in Kenya, you can donate to the Amani Children’s Foundation online at www.amanichildren.org. Or donate to “The Daniel Fund” at gofundme.com: https://www. gofundme.com/9267qqhc. Cookina Reusable Cooking Sheets Every year during the crazy rush to cook the perfect Thanksgiving dinner, I always manage to ruin at least one pan. I try to keep aluminum foil on hand and line the pans with foil as a protection against the mess, but I hate how much of it ends up in the trash! The COOKINA Cuisine Reusable Cooking Sheet is an excellent solution. This product is a non-stick, easy-to-clean, reusable liner for pans. Ideal for using as an alternative to aluminum foil, parchment and wax paper, users can place the cooking sheet on a baking tray or pan to bake recipes without having to use oil or needing to clean the tray and oven afterwards.

This product comes on a convenient roll that you can cut to whatever size best fits your needs. I found the cooking sheets very easy to clean and the food came out evenly cooked without sticking! The reusable cooking sheet is available at cookina.co.

Zingity App Builds Positive Character Traits Zingity is a new free app that supports what schools and parents are already doing to encourage children to engage activities that help develop over 45 positive character traits. With Zingity, parents can select a character trait they want to improve or build in their children. Character traits range from love, accountability, calmness, ambition, bravery, creativity, good sportsmanship, generosity, kindness, loyalty, maturity, patience, respect and more. Once a trait is selected, Zingity recommends activity packs to parents that will support that character. For example, the Kindness is Contagious activity pack gives parents a description about how the 12 ideas and 26 Zingers inside will inspire their children to be kind to others. Zingers suggested in each pack are open ended so children can use their imaginations to decide how to execute them. Each Zinger is assigned a point value so children can watch as they earn points for each project they complete and move closer to completing the activity pack and a receiving a reward. For more information about Zingity, visit: www.leapspring.com or download the free IOS app from the app store. v

Dealing with Distraction By Carolyn Jabs

M

any parents are conscientious about making rules for when and how kids can use technology. But what about rules for parents? For her book, The Big Disconnect, Catherine Steiner-Adair, a psychologist at Harvard, interviewed more than 1000 children, aged 4-18. Over and over, she heard kids talk about how they felt frustrated or forlorn because their parents spent too much time on their cell phones. The same results showed up in the State of the Kid Survey, done by Highlights Magazine in 2014. Over half the children surveyed reported that their parents often didn’t respond to them because they were distracted by technology—laptops, cell phones or television. Several researchers have observed that interacting with technology is different from other parenting activities like cooking, shopping or even driving in ordinary traffic. Cell phones, in particular, are designed to grab and hold attention, so people lose track of other things including how much time they’ve spent staring at the device. E-mailing, texting or even scrolling through social media preoccupies parents in a way that can make children feel shut out, lonely and unimportant. At the same time, giving kids constant undivided attention isn’t possible or desirable. Children need to learn how to soothe and amuse themselves. They benefit from opportunities to play and daydream without the direct supervision of adults. Also, good parenting can’t happen in a vacuum. Adults must earn a living and stay informed. They are also likely to be more grounded and happier if they stay connected to colleagues, friends and other parents, something that’s supported by new technologies. In other words, cell phones and other technological distractions aren’t a problem in and of themselves. They become a problem when parents aren’t mindful about how they distribute their most precious resource— attention. Here are some things to consider:

Focus on safety. After years of decline, visits to pediatric emergency rooms have risen. No one can prove that cell phones are responsible, but research shows that adults who use cell phones while walking—much less driving—are more likely to have accidents. For safety’s sake, parents (and other caregivers) should put away all devices when supervising kids in risky settings—changing tables, bathtubs, parking lots, city streets, swimming pools and playgrounds—where even a moment of inattention can be dangerous.

Make the most of reunions. Adair recommends putting devices on hold when family members see each other after they’ve been separated. Make yourself fully available when you pick your child up from daycare or other activities and when someone (including your spouse!) walks into the house. Plan ahead so you can stop what you’re doing and let your child know how happy you are to see him or her. Teach (and appreciate) patience. There’s nothing wrong with asking a child to wait while an adult finishes a task. How long a child can be patient depends upon age, temperament and other stresses, so you’ll want to take those variables into account when you ask for “just a sec” to finish

8 | November 2015 | Wilmington Parent

something on our phone or laptop. Be sure not to take advantage of your child’s self control. If you promised to get a snack or play a game in ten minutes, set a timer so you keep your commitment. And thank your child for being patient.

Respect tech free zones. Many families enjoy each other’s company more if they put technology off-limits at particular times. Meals and bedtime are obvious choices, but you might also set aside time for a walk after dinner or game night on the weekend. Some families make the car a techfree zone, but others depend on technology to relieve the stress of a long commute. Once you decide on rules that make sense for your family, be sure you follow as well enforce them. Before checking in with a ping that seems urgent, think about what you’re telling your children about their place in your priorities.

Monitor emotions. Do you feel irritated when your child wants your attention? In one recent study, researchers observed caregivers and children in a restaurant. Most of the adults used a cell phone during the meal, and those who were most focused on their phones responded harshly to interruptions. Some kids gave up and sat passively, but others became more disruptive in an effort to get the adult’s attention. If negative feelings are building in you or your child, it’s time to take a tech break and tune in to what’s happening. Take a breath and focus on your child. If you have to correct misbehavior, feel compassion for what has caused it. Notice what your child is doing right. Ask yourself what you can do to restore good feelings. Make good use of found time. Even when life is very busy, there are moments of unclaimed time. Your toddler is napping. Your school age child is playing happily with a friend. Your teen is engrossed in homework. Use these moments on something that will replenish and not deplete your energies. If you reach for your device, be selective. Answer the e-mail that’s weighing on your conscience. Reach out to the friend who lifts your spirits. Pay attention to your feelings. Does a hit of social media feel refreshing? Or would you be better served using found time on exercise, crossing off something on the To-Do list or daydreaming with a cup of tea? Finally, think about times in your life when you have felt treasured and loved. In all likelihood, you had another person’s full attention. Be sure your child regularly has that experience in your company. Read together. Share a snack. Take a walk. Play a game. Snuggle before bedtime. What you do doesn’t matter nearly as much as the fact that you let go of everything else so your child can feel the security and warmth of your undistracted love. v Carolyn Jabs, M.A., raised three computer savvy kids including one with special needs. She has been writing Growing Up Online for ten years and is working on a book about constructive responses to conflict. www.growing-up-online.com to read other columns.

The Great American Smokeout By Danielle Villegas

G

et ready to lose the habit, and become victorious over tobacco. The American Cancer Society Great American Smokeout event is your chance to triumph over addiction. Every November, they set aside the third Thursday to encourage smokers to go the distance, and to finally give up smoking. About 42 million Americans still smoke cigarettes, and tobacco use remains the single largest preventable cause of disease and premature death in the United States. As of 2013, there were also 12.4 million cigar smokers in the US, and over 2.3 million who smoke tobacco in pipes — other dangerous and addictive forms of tobacco. By quitting — even for one day — you will be taking an important step toward a healthier life — one that can lead to reducing your cancer risk. It’s a race for your health, and it starts today. Today’s the day that quitters win. Quitting is hard, but you can increase your chances of success with help. The American Cancer Society can tell you about the steps you can take to quit smoking and provide quit-smoking programs, resources and support that can increase your chances of quitting successfully. To learn about the available tools, call 1-800-227-2345, or visit www. cancer.org.

Helping a Smoker Quit: Do’s and Don’ts General hints for friends and family Do respect that the quitter is in charge. This is their lifestyle change and their challenge, not yours. Do ask the person whether they want you to ask regularly how they’re doing. Ask how they’re feeling – not just whether they’ve stayed quit. Do help the quitter get what they need, such as hard candy to suck on, straws to chew on, and fresh veggies cut up and kept in the refrigerator. Do spend time doing things with the quitter to keep their mind off smoking – go to the movies, take a walk to get past a craving (what many call a “nicotine fit”), or take a bike ride together. Do try to see it from the smoker’s point of view – a smoker’s habit may feel like an old friend that’s always been there when times were tough. It’s hard to give that up. Do celebrate along the way. Quitting smoking is a BIG DEAL! Don’t doubt the smoker’s ability to quit. Your faith in them reminds them they can do it. Don’t judge, nag, preach, tease, or scold. This may make the smoker feel worse about him or herself. You don’t want your loved one to turn to a cigarette to soothe hurt feelings. Don’t offer advice. Just ask how you can help with the plan or program they are using. v

E-Cigarettes and Youth Researchers from University of California San Francisco have found that middle and high school students who use electronic cigarettes are 6 times as likely to become regular smokers of conventional cigarettes as those who had never tried e-cigarettes. E-cigarettes look like regular cigarettes, but they are operated by battery. An atomizer heats a solution of liquid, flavorings, and nicotine that creates a mist that is inhaled. According to the study’s authors, e-cigarettes are attractive to young people because they are heavily advertised on television and radio, which was banned 40 years ago for regular cigarettes. In addition, e-cigarettes come in flavors including strawberry, licorice, and chocolate. Flavored conventional cigarettes are banned in the US because of their appeal to youth. E-cigarettes are not currently subject to regulation by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The FDA has announced it is taking steps to regulate products meeting the legal definition of a “tobacco product” to be subject to the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. Source: www.cancer.org

Manners Magic: Holiday Etiquette for Tots, Teens, and In-Betweens By Malia Jacobson

A

lready dreading the thought of taking your rambunctious brood to Grandma’s for a holiday meal? Most parents know that manners don’t come naturally to children, and though we strive to teach children niceties like “please” and “thank you,” etiquette doesn’t begin and end with the magic words. What about the tot who squirms at the dinner table and jumps up after two minutes? What about the gradeschooler who runs wild at friends’ homes? Or how about the high-schooler who shrinks during introductions? If you’re raising a manners-challenged child, you’re not alone. Childhood manners mishaps are as common as children themselves, says Chris J. Rock, etiquette coach and founder of Etiquette and Protocol Consulting in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. The good news: youth is a time to learn and practice appropriate behavior, and mistakes are expected. Even better, swift etiquette intervention can lay the groundwork for a lifetime of civility.

TODDLER/PRESCHOOL: Table Training Establish family behavior norms early on. If you don’t want your children to run indoors, traipse through airplane rows, or jump on furniture, correct these behaviors in toddlerhood with a firm, gentle reminder: “That is not how we act in this family. It doesn’t matter what other children do.” Toddlers have notoriously short memories, so catchy songs can help etiquette lessons stick, says Rock. “We sing ‘Yes is better than Yeah’ with our grandchildren,” she says. Table manners training can also start early. Rock recommends introducing flatware as soon as children can hold it (often in late infancy or early toddlerhood), discouraging eating with the hands, and gently stretching the time tots can sit still during meals. Start with just four or five minutes, and build to 15 or 20. Children as young as two can be taught to ask their host— in most cases, mom or dad—to be excused from the table when finished.

ELEMENTARY YEARS: Social Graces The grade-school years bring more friend visits and sleepovers—poten-

tial manners minefields, since kids will be away from parents’ watchful eyes. Teaching children to be a respectful guest in friends’ homes will ramp up confidence at a time when children are developing a social identity (and increase the odds of receiving a repeat invitation). Pre-playdate, remind children that being a guest means respecting the household rules of their host. If the host family removes their shoes at the door or doesn’t allow snacking in bedrooms, a guest should comply. To show respect, ask children to address their friend’s parents as “Mr. and Mrs. Smith” unless directed by the parents to do otherwise. And for an especially nice touch, follow up a sleepover or a special playdate with a personal thank-you note from the child.

TWEENS/TEENS: Introduction Anxiety Want your tween or teen to make a good impression, during the holidays and year-round? Teach them to make a proper introduction, a habit that pays lifelong dividends. To start, insist that children learn to introduce themselves with confidence and greet new acquaintances with eye contact and a firm handshake. The basics of a positive introduction include standing up straight, making eye contact, smiling, saying hello and your name in a clear voice, and extending a firm handshake. Like any skill, repetition is the key to mastery. “It’s important for parents to know introduction protocol themselves to they can model correctly,” says Rock. For example, when introducing two parties, the senior or more important person’s name is said first. Likewise, when introducing two friends, use equal terms for both; never use first and last name for one and just first name for the other. Polish introduction prowess by encouraging tweens and teens to introduce you and others at social gatherings and in group settings. Soon, they’ll be ready to take on the world—civilly, of course. v Malia Jacobson is an award-winning health and parenting journalist and mom of three. Her latest book is Sleep Tight, Every Night: Helping Toddlers and Preschoolers Sleep Well Without Tears, Tricks, or Tirades.

Thanksgiving Fun at the Kid Table By Danielle Villegas

Turkey Fruit Kabob Centerpiece Materials And Ingredients: • assorted fruit (grapes, kiwi, strawberries, pineapple, cantaloupe) • wooden skewers • toothpicks • 1 bosc pear (head) • 1 pumpkin (body) • 2 lbs cubed cheddar cheese(beak and tail feathers) • 1 -2 red bell peppers (snood, feet and side feathers) or 1 -2 yellow bell pepper (snood, feet and side feathers) • 2 raisins or 2 blueberries (eyes) • 1 lb seedless grapes (tail feathers) Directions: • Stabilize the pumpkin body on serving dish or platter. • Using a section of bamboo skewer, attach a Bosc pear (head) upside-down to the upper front of the pumpkin. • Cut a cheese triangle beak and red pepper snood. Attach both, along with raisin eyes, to the pear head with sections of toothpick. • Cut red pepper feet and set them in place. Pin pepper side feathers in place with toothpicks. • Place assorted fruit on wooden skewers and insert them around the back of the pumpkin for tail feathers.

Thankful Wreath Materials: • wire wreath frame • large bag of wooden clothespins (53 to fill a 12 inch frame) • yellow, brown, and orange acrylic paints • sponges for painting • fine tip markers • brown butcher paper Instructions: • The idea behind the wreath is children and other guests to add what they are thankful for to the wreath. Each person writes his name on the tip of the clothespin and what he is thankful for on the handle of the clothespin. • First, cover the table in brown butcher paper to protect the table, give the kids a space to continue their creativity, and for easy cleanup. • Next, let the kids paint the clothespins with the sponges and paint. The mottled paint job looks great when they’re all added to the wreath! • Once the clothespins are completely dry, have everyone write what they are thankful for on the clothespins with their names. Then, attach them to the ring by simply clipping them onto the inner-most ring. The length of the clothespin will cover up the rest of the wire rings, forming the nice wreath shape. v

Turkey Hunt Using a scorecard to keep track, little scavengers go on a hunt around the house, searching for each of 12 hidden turkey game pieces. First one to round them all up wins a prize—more pumpkin pie, perhaps? Turkey Bowl What you need: 10 Bottled Waters, a Gobble Gobble label printed from www.preparednotscared.com, Double-sided Tape and A Grapefruit-sized Ball Instructions: Print the label, cut it out and if you can, laminate them. Remove the labels from the water bottles and attach the new labels with the double sided tape. Set up the “bowling pins” and you’re good to BOWL!

We need you to

volunteer: • Serve Food • Ring a Bell • Adopt an Angel • Help Distribute Toys

Who’s Got the Turkey Kids sit in a circle and pass around “tokens” you’ve printed. Most feature autumn leaves, but one is the highly coveted turkey token. Choose a child to sit in the middle and be “It,” tasked with trying to find the turkey. A match can be as kumbaya calm or as fiercely competitive as the players want. Print tokens at www.preparednotscared.com.

Leftover Turkey Transformations Turkey Grilled Cheese Add slices of leftover turkey to your grilled cheese sandwiches. The extra protein will keep the kids fuller, longer and prevent late night snacking. Substitute the cheese you usually use for thinly sliced Brie. Amp up the fiber by using whole-grain bread. You can even add a little sweetness by including that leftover cranberry sauce in the mix. Holiday Pockets Open a can of buttermilk biscuits, flatten them out and fill them with any combination of leftover turkey, mashed sweet potatoes, cranberry sauce, or stuffing. Fold them over and seal them by pressing a fork along the edges. Bake at 350 degrees until golden brown and you have a leftover meal pocket you can pick up and take with you anywhere! Using sweet potatoes adds a little extra flavor over regular potatoes, and are also packed with vitamin A.

Mini Cheesy Turkey Pies Combine turkey, cheese, and any other leftovers that look yummy with Bisquick. Mix it all together. Next, fill muffin tins with your turkey creation. Add in spinach, low-fat ranch dressing or other veggies to give this dish a different flavor and vitamin combo each time you make it. Source: www.unitypoint.org

Saving Money

During the Holidays We G By Danielle Villegas

T

here are an abundance of products on the market that appeal to consumers with flashy advertising and convenience, but drive them to spend too much money. During the holidays, this advertising is magnified and outrageous spending is encouraged.

for ALL Foster Parents. You really do make a difference! For More Information about Foster Care, call:

(910) 202-9337

Here is a list of everyday items that you can save money on, and with that savings, you can tackle the extra holiday expenses with a little more ease.

Name-Brand: Whether it’s beauty products, pain relievers, clothes or other everyday items, give new products and brands a chance. Snagshout. com, a new social deals website, provides consumers with deep discounts on new products in exchange for reviewing the product on Amazon. Most of the deals are between 30-90% off of regular retail price for Snagshout users who are willing to try the product and leave an honest review within two weeks of purchase.

Haircuts: Haircuts can be expensive, especially if your cut requires you to frequent the salon more than a few times a year. Luckily, there are plenty of ways to save money and still get a great cut. College of Wilmington, located in Independence Mall on Oleander Dr., offers discounted hair salon services in their Spa Clinic. Visit www.collegeofwilmington.edu for appointment times and prices.

Late Payments: You’re definitely paying too much for late payments, because you can cut those out entirely. Unnecessary payments made to the bank after an accidental bounced check or an overdraft start to add up. Try a site like www.mint.com to help you keep track of your spending and bank fees- your wallet will thank you later. Water: Bottled water is marketed as a fresh, chemical-free alternative to tap water. While it might be convenient, bottled water is costing you a significant amount of money that could be put toward an at-home water filter. Saving gallon jugs, and filling them for 35 cents a gallon at fill stations located outside most grocery stores, is another cheap alternative. Cable: With Netflix, Hulu, Apple TV, Roku and other online sites for streaming TV shows online, cable is not a necessity. However, if you enjoy kicking back on Sundays watching your favorite NFL teams go head to head, visit www.moneyunder30.com for advice on getting discounts with your cable provider.

Electricity: Keeping electric devices plugged in, especially when not in use, can increase an electric bill. For some customers, these “phantom charges” make up 10% of the bill! Learn more ways to cut the cost, and in turn, be more energy efficient at www.thesimpledollar.com. Cell phones: There is no need to be locked into a phone contract when same benefit, no-contract options are available. GIV Mobile is a nocontract wireless provider offering unlimited plans starting at $20 per month. They also give 8% of every customer’s monthly plan amount to a non-profit charity of the customer’s choice. Visit www.givmobile.com for more information. v www.wilmingtonparent.com

New Hanover County Schools is bringing Rachel’s Challenge into middle and high schools during the months of October and November. Rachel’s Challenge is a national non-profit organization that strives to equip and inspire individuals to replace acts of violence, bullying, and negativity with acts of respect, kindness, and compassion. Rachel’s Challenge is based on the life and writings of Rachel Joy Scott, the first victim of the Columbine school shootings in 1999. Rachel’s Challenge is designed to help schools reduce problems such as bullying, student isolation, teen suicide, discrimination, school violence, and disciplinary actions. Through powerful presentations, trainings, community events, and professional development, Rachel’s Challenge provides a sustainable solution. Rachel Scott’s inspiring story provides a simple, yet powerful example of how small acts of kindness and acceptance motivate us to consider our relationships with the people we come in contact with every day. For more information on Rachel’s Challenge, please call 877-895-7060, or visit www. rachelschallenge.org. Rachel’s Challenge is sponsored by Trillium Health Resources.

Castle Hayne and Murrayville Elementary Schools Launch “Mighty M.O.M.S.” On Monday, October 19, 2015, Castle Hayne and Murrayville elementary schools launched a new program called “Mighty M.O.M.S. (Moms of Magnificent Students). The program will be similar to Watch D.O.G.S. (Dads of Great Students), but will invite mothers and mother-figures into the schools to serve as role models, and to assist teachers and students. “I have heard moms of my students expressing their desire to jump in at the school, but they just aren’t sure where they fit in,” said Castle Hayne Principal Cyndy Bliss. “That is why I am excited to launch this new program that will get more of our “moms” in the building in different ways than they may have in the past. The moms will not be taking the place of our Watch D.O.G.S., but will be filling other roles.” “Watch D.O.G.S. has been such a successful program in our school, and I have been wanting to offer the same opportunities to our moms and female role models. Mighty M.O.M.S. is a great initiative to involve more of our moms and strengthen our community involvement,” said Murrayville Principal Tim Dominowski. For more information about joining Mighty M.O.M.S., contact Ms. Cyndy Bliss at (910) 602-4970, or Mrs. Tim Dominowski at (910) 790-5067.
