ell, that’s it folks! Summer is coming to an end. The mad rush to find the perfect pencil case and the must-have backpack has begun. If you want to hang on to the last few lazy days, our calendar is still stocked with plenty of summer events! For those that are ready to start their back-to-school plans, this is the issue that will put you on the path to a great school year! This month’s Back-to-School section has school calendars, open house dates, and an article by writer Christa Melnyk Hines that can help those parents who find themselves off to a rough start this year. Her article, “I Hate My Teacher!”, can help you resolve those child-teacher conflicts, and hopefully get your school year on happier ground. Afterschool activities start up this time of the year too, and if you’re looking for ways to enrich your child’s afterschool time, pg. 30 has you covered. You also don’t want to miss the article on pg. 28 about New Hanover County’s 4-H clubs. Getting your kids involved in a 4-H club could set them on a path of lifelong success! Just because summer is almost over, doesn’t mean the farmer’s markets are shutting down just yet! Katelyn Stenersen, a local farmer, wants to invite all families to enjoy a rewarding experience at their local farmer’s market. She has even included a recipe for a Back-to-School Breakfast Quiche that is simple, tasty, and can be made from fresh ingredients bought at the farmer’s market.

Animal Sanctuary at Poplar Grove Poplar Grove Plantation, located at 10200 US Highway 17 North just before you get to Hampstead, has been a centerpiece of the community and a popular field trip destination for many years. Now, they are pleased to announce that their newly renovated farm area will now be known as the Animal Sanctuary at Poplar Grove. Poplar Grove is now a rescue site for farm animals and is also an accredited horse rescue and foster site for the United States Equine Rescue League of the South East. They want everyone to know their focus is rescue, rehabilitation and education. The objective with the renovation is interactivity with the animals, and the Animal Sanctuary has already had a lot of interest and visits by many homeschool groups. Poplar Grove would love to see more school groups visiting once the fall year begins. One of the main objectives at the Animal Sanctuary at Poplar Grove is to educate people on the various types of animals, the causes and effects of neglect and the actions people should take if they encounter neglect. The Animal Sanctuary is a 100% nonprofit organization and they rely strictly on donations and volunteers. The volunteer program (12 years and older) helps with a multitude of tasks and could use more help as they continue the renovation. Visiting hours and Barnyard Tours are from 9am-4:30pm, Monday through Friday. Visit www.poplargrove.org, the Poplar Grove Animal Sanctuary: Rescue, Rehabilitation, Education Facebook page or call 352-6131 for more information.

Potty Training Tips Every child eventually takes that momentous step from diapers to fully potty trained, and for parents it is especially a time to celebrate! While each child will learn in their own way and at their own pace, here are a couple ideas to get this potty party moving along! Magic Water Changing Color - Works best for boys. Put a drop of food coloring in the water. Then, when your son goes potty the food coloring will spread and make the water change color. Potty Watch - These fun watches can be bought online, Toys-R-Us, Bed Bath & Beyond, and many other places for under $10. The idea is to program this wrist watch to play songs and light up at 30-, 60-, or 90-minute intervals; then it resets itself and starts the countdown all over again. Cold Turkey Weekend - Patience and plastic covered furniture. Be prepared for a long weekend and a few accidents, but when your child shows the signs of being ready just go for it. Put on the big boy/ girl undies, make frequent trips to the potty, and after every accident reinforce the need to “go to the potty” to avoid future “yuckiness”. Then praise the successes!

Kid-Shaming

I

n the Era of Over-sharing, it’s not surprising that parents post photos of their kids on social media. What’s truly startling is the popularity of something that has been called, for better or worse, “kid-shaming.” The idea of taking a photo of a sign hanging around a loved one’s neck seems to have started with pets. Maybe it is funny to see dogs, cats and even hamsters who seem to be confessing their “sins,” but when children are the subjects of these photos, many viewers find themselves cringing instead of chuckling. Some “shaming” photos are clearly intended to be entertaining. In a contemporary version of “Kids say (and do) the darndest things,” parents of toddlers or even infants post ostensibly cute pictures of little ones holding messages about potty accidents or other childish forms of misbehavior. In other cases, parents seem to hope that online shaming will be an effective form of discipline. Some parents, frustrated by unruly teens, have updated The Scarlet Letter by posting photos of young people holding signs describing infractions ranging from stealing and cheating to back talk and breaking curfew. Although kid-shaming photos may seem extreme, they raise serious questions about when it’s appropriate to expose children to the scrutiny of social media. Here are questions worth asking before you post ANY photo of your child.

What’s my motivation? Parenthood can be frustrating and lonely. Connecting with other parents—on the playground, at the sidelines of soccer games—is a time-honored way to relieve stress. After kibitzing with other parents, most people return to the challenges of raising children with more perspective and better balance. Social media may seem like a variation on this theme, and posting a funny photo of a child may temporarily relieve adult feelings of embarrassment, irritation or isolation. The difference, of course, is that social media throws an unwilling or oblivious child into the spotlight, inviting laughter, judgment and even ridicule. When you’re tempted to post a photo of your child, stop for a moment and examine your own feelings. Are you acting out of love for your child? Or is posting a way to meet your own (very legitimate) need for attention or support? If it’s all about you, consider other ways of getting what you need. Phone a friend. Join a parenting group. Read a book on child development. Or keep a (private!) journal. How would I feel if I were the one in the photo? Everyone makes mistakes. In healthy families, people can count on loved ones not to blab about their weaknesses. Even the cutest kid-shaming photos violate this trust. Before posting, try to imagine—in detail—how you would feel if someone (spouse? child? friend? parent?) shared an image of you at your worst or with a sign around your neck proclaiming your most embarrassing secret.

Will this make my child feel ashamed or humiliated? Humiliation is one of the quickest ways to undermine trust in a relationship. Over-

8 | August 2014 | Wilmington Parent

whelmed parents may be tempted to try it as a discipline strategy because shame can produce short-term compliance. Unfortunately, child development experts agree that the long-term consequences of being called out in public are damaging. Public punishment makes a child feel defined by his or her mistake, so it’s likely to lead to feelings of isolation, self-hatred, hostility or even revenge. In contrast, effective discipline helps children understand how they can make amends for mistakes in the past and make better choices in the future.

What if this goes viral? Most of what’s posted online disappears without a trace. There are, however, rather conspicuous exceptions. Before sharing a photo or video of your child, think about what would happen to your kid—and you—if that image turns out to be one of the random items that gets shared by millions of other people. When a post takes on a life of its own and becomes associated with a child’s name, it’s likely to be the first thing that shows up in future searches by everyone from employers to romantic partners. Do you really want your child—or your parenting—to be defined by one foolish moment?

Do I want my child to follow this example? Most parents teach their kids not to embarrass, much less mock other people. Those lessons seem rather lame when kids discover parents have posted photos that mortify or make fun of them. In this respect, kid-shaming resembles teasing. You may say you’re “just kidding” but often there’s an undercurrent of hostility that makes it difficult to distinguish teasing from bullying. To raise kids who are caring and respectful, parents have to be models of caring, respectful behavior online as well as off.

Will this post improve your relationship with your child? Some images do strengthen relationships because they affirm a family’s values—pride in a child’s accomplishment, a shared sense of humor, times of genuine togetherness. When it seems important to post pictures of your family, seek out photos that will reinforce what’s good about your connection with your kid. If you’re uncertain about posting an image, you can, of course, ask your child whether it’s OK to share. When children are too young to answer that question or to anticipate the possible consequences, parents bear the added responsibility of trying to imagine what they might think now as well as in the future. Given what’s at stake, some parents may decide that, when it comes to kids, “under-sharing” is by far the better option. v Carolyn Jabs, M.A., raised three computer savvy kids including one with special needs. She has been writing Growing Up Online for ten years and is working on a book about constructive responses to conflict. Do You Have an Iron Deficiency? By Noelia Martinez

I

ron is very important in maintaining many body functions, including the production of hemoglobin, the molecule in your blood that carries oxygen. Iron is also necessary to maintain healthy cells, skin, hair, and nails. Iron-Deficiency can be easily overlooked in both children and adults because some of the symptoms of low iron in your blood are: headaches, muscle cramps, and general fatigue or weakness. These can often be attributed to stressful days and lack of sleep. However, your doctor can perform a simple blood test to determine if your symptoms are iron deficiency related. While having low levels of any essential vitamins and minerals can be unhealthy, Iron-Deficiency Anemia is a serious disorder that can develop from chronic low levels of iron in the blood.

Who’s at Risk? Women who are pregnant or breast feeding- Both you and your child are absorbing a lot more iron than on a regular basis People who workout on a regular basis- Low iron is dangerous for an athlete. Even though headaches are a common symptom during strenuous work, for athletes, low iron can cause migraines and can even push them into unconsciousness in the middle of games, races, or long practices. Vegan or vegetarian- While meat eaters can easily get natural iron from red meat, vegetarians or semi-vegetarians usually have to take extra iron supplements to consume their daily amount. Children who drink more than 16 to 24 ounces a day of cow’s milk Cow’s milk not only contains little iron, but it can also decrease absorption of iron and irritate the intestinal lining causing chronic blood loss.

Signs of iron deficiency: • A desire to eat/chew ice • A need to constantly move your legs • Swelling or soreness of the tongue • Brittle nails or hair loss • Dizziness and shortened breath • Coldness in hands and feet

• Breakfast cereals, fortified with 100% of the DV for iron • Egg yolks • Lentils • Dark chocolate • watermelon • Apricot • Tomatoes • White beans • Oysters • Dark green leafy vegetables It is also important to see a doctor if you have any symptoms of irondeficiency. They may be able to prescribe a dietary supplement at a dosage specific to your needs. v

ASK: Asking Saves Kids One question could save your child’s life. Is there an unlocked gun where my child plays? Statistics you should know: • 80% of unintentional firearm deaths of kids under 15 occur in the home. • 1 in 3 homes with children have guns, many left unlocked or loaded. • 9 children and teens are shot each day in gun accidents. The ASK (Asking Saves Kids) Campaign promotes a simple idea with the potential to help keep kids safe. It encourages parents to ASK if there is an unlocked gun in the homes where their children play. Parents ask all sorts of questions before their children visit other homes. They ask about pets in the house, discuss allergies and Internet access, and ask questions about supervision. ASK encourages parents to add one more question to this conversation: “Is there an unlocked gun in your house?” It’s a simple question, but it has the power to save a child’s life. The gun topic can sometimes be a controversial issue that many choose to avoid discussing. However, your child’s safety is the only issue that matters when you decide to ask this question. For more than a decade, the ASK Campaign and its supporters have partnered with over 400 grassroots organizations to spread its message in neighborhoods nationwide. The ASK Campaign is a collaboration between the Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence and the American Academy of Pediatrics who has promoted the ASK message to its 62,000 members across the country. The ASK Campaign has successfully inspired 19 million households to ask if there are guns where their children play. Source: www.askingsaveskids.org

CROSSROADS: Peer Education to Prevent Substance Abuse The CROSSROADS Adolescent Substance Abuse Prevention Program offers schools and organizations with an evidence-based approach to preventing and delaying adolescent drug use. CROSSROADS Adolescent offers middle schools, high schools and organizations a comprehensive approach to adolescent prevention. Practicing prevention professionals and a well-trained team of College Mentors, are dedicated to helping make CROSSROADS successful and effective in a variety of group settings. The 5 CROSSROADS Adolescent PROGRAM Components Peer Educators: These are middle or high school students selected by their teacher to co-teach the CROSSROADS curriculum to their classmates and conduct CROSSROADS Drug Information Booth exhibits and Social Norms Campaigns for their school or organization. College Mentors: These are specially-trained UNCW students who assist in the recruitment and selection of our in-school Peer Educators and with the implementation of the CROSSROADS program in local schools and organizations. Healthy Carb-Loading for Young Athletes Young athletes often have demanding schedules. School, homework, long practices, and games can overwhelm their growing bodies. They may be tempted to “carb-load” for some quick energy in hopes of pushing through a long day, but not all carbohydrates have the same effect. The Glycemic Index (or GI) was originally brought about for those people who have Diabetes, but it can also be useful to athletes looking for sustained energy and better recuperation. “High Glycemic” foods are quickly absorbed and give a quick boost and an inevitable crash. “Low Glycemic” foods absorb slowly and take longer to release into the system. Low GI foods can benefit your health and athletic performance. Since low GI foods are assimilated at a slower rate, the energy is sustained throughout a highly demanding physical day. Consuming low to medium glycemic carbs can help prevent the crash outcomes with caffeine, simple sugar, and high glycemic carbs. So when your young athlete wants a boost before a big game or a long practice, give them a snack that will give them long-lasting energy. Low-medium glycemic carbs: • Nuts • Agave nectar • Brown rice • Quinoa • Black beans • Fruits - ONLY: plums, peaches, apples, oranges, pears, grapes • Pasta (boiled for 5 minutes) Source: Becky Wilson, is a local PICP I & II Strength and Conditioning Coach who works with all levels of clients to achieve their personal and/or athletic goals. “I Hate my Teacher!” How to Resolve Child-Teacher Conflict

SPECIAL SECTION: Back to School

By Christa Melnyk Hines

“I

hate my teacher,” Elora*, 9, declared to her mother. But, when pressed for details, her mom says Elora buried her head in her knees. So she tried a different approach. “I engaged her in a fun activity,” she says. “Then I light-heartedly asked questions like who she likes the most at school, who she likes the least, followed by, ‘oh, how come?’ What I found out was that she felt like the teacher yelled at her.”

Why the grumbling? An elementary school child’s disdain for her teacher may grow out of a variety of factors, like adjusting from a beloved former teacher’s management style to a new teacher’s approach. Other influences on a child’s attitude toward his teacher include class size, peer competition, increased homework, more demanding, independent school work, as well as, differences between home and school environments.

Do some digging. Allow your child time to adjust to his teacher’s expectations and rules. If his complaints persist, ask objective questions, like: “How is the work for you? How are you getting along with the other kids?” “By doing that you can get a flavor of the environment rather than the situation,” says Dr. Stephanie Mihalas, a child psychologist and a nationally certified school psychologist, who frequently helps students and parents manage and resolve school conflicts. “You may get an idea that something else is happening that’s triggering the ‘meanness’ and then at that point, you have more information to call or email the teacher.” Review class work. Notice patterns like red marks and notes from the teacher on classwork. If your student struggles and seems afraid to ask questions, discuss appropriate times for her to talk to her teacher about the work and what types of questions she should ask.

Signs of a child-teacher conflict. “The single biggest factor is a change in grades. If grades are starting to slip, that’s a huge indicator,” Norris says. Behavior changes can also indicate a problem, including disengagement at school, forgetting homework and lack of effort.

Resolving a personality conflict. Rather than getting angry or defensive, take a calm, diplomatic approach when conferencing with the teacher. “The last thing you want to do is instigate more conflict between the teacher and your child and if you start to pit sides, that’s what ends up happening,” Norris says. Also, ask if you can sit in during class one day. “Your presence might change the nature of how your child acts, but it will give you a flavor of how the teacher teaches,” Mihalas says.

When to contact administration. Go over a teacher’s head only as a last resort. “One of the only times to bring in administration is if your child is covered by special education law and the teacher isn’t following special ed law,” Mihalas says. Other times you might seek help from administration: • The teacher agreed on a set of interventions, but isn’t following those strategies. • Your child comes home crying every day. • You talk with the teacher and are unable to resolve the issue.

Request a different teacher? Sometimes a child’s personality and a teacher’s personality simply clashes. Unless the teacher is abusive, help your child understand that she’s not always going to like everyone, stressing the importance of remaining respectful and learning how to manage personality differences. “In my humble opinion, I don’t think it’s a good idea to show children that because there’s a problem then they need to move from that classroom,” Mihalas says. Instead teach flexibility by creating a link between friendships and getting along with others. For a younger child, you might say: “Everyone is different. Just as mommy and daddy do things differently, this is how your teacher is. It’s really good to learn how to work with all different kinds of people.”

Seek professional help. If interventions at school are unsuccessful, seek help from a child psychologist to rule out learning disabilities and anxiety. v Freelance journalist Christa Melnyk Hines is a family communication expert. Connect with her atwww.christamelnykhines.com.

Questions to ask the teacher:

• Have you noticed my child struggling with a particular subject? • Does she participate in classroom discussions? • How does she seem to get along with her peers? • How can we work together to help my child better adjust?

Excel in Life, Join 4-H

By Danielle Villegas

H

ead, Heart, Health, Hands. These are the 4 values that all members of the 4-H community pledge to strive for in life. When the youth of 4-H make this pledge, they are committing to life-long goals of clearer thinking, loyalty, service, and healthy living. These are life skills that will help our youth be more equipped to make better career and life choices. Long-term membership in 4-H encourages children and teens to grow into active citizens and leaders while becoming positively contributing members of their families and communities.

Fascinating statistics! Research conducted since 2002 surveyed more than 7,000 adolescents from diverse backgrounds across 42 U.S. states. This study uncovered powerful evidence of the impact of 4-H participation in grades 5-12. Long-term 4-H members are: • 4 times more likely to make contributions to their communities.

SPECIAL SECTION: Back to School

• 2 times more likely to participate in Science, Engineering and Computer Technology programs during out-of-school time. • 2 times more likely to make healthier choices. • 50% less likely to smoke cigarettes, use illegal drugs, or participate in other illegal activity. • 20% more likely to hold a leadership position in their school or community. • 65% more likely to have held conversations with an adult other than a parent that lasted 10 minutes or more within the past month. New Hanover County’s 4-H program is supported by a unique partnership between North Carolina State University and New Hanover County. They have about 100 long-term club members and close to 3,000 participants in the short-term programs such as: in-school programs, after school and special interest groups, and camps.

4-H is about cows and horses, right? There are two 4-H clubs in New Hanover County that are horse specific, and a serious interest in developing a poultry club, but 4-H is not only about farm animals and agriculture. There are many different club opportunities that focus on a variety of specific interests. 1. Cape Fear Area Rabbit 4-H Club - This club learns how to care for rabbits and other small pets. You do not have to own a rabbit to join. This club is open to youth ages 5-18. 2. Coastal Explorers 4-H Club - Focused on upper elementary/middle school students exploring our local environment while learning life skills and encouraging one another. 3. 4-H Teen Council - A group of teens who develop leadership skills, participate in community service projects, and help guide the county 4-H program. Ages 13 to 18. Meets every 3rd Monday of the month.

28 | August 2014 | Wilmington Parent

4. Saddlebrook 4-H Club - This club is open to youth ages 5-18 years old who are interested in learning more about horses. You do not have to own a horse to be a member. 5. Shamrock Science 4-H Club - Focused on elementary students interested in science, meets twice a month on Fridays at the Arboretum. 6. Spur it On 4-H Club - This club focuses on 4-H events such as horse bowl, hippology, judging, shows, and presentations. This club is open to youth ages 5-18 years old. 7. Trackers 4-H Club - After school club for middle & high school students that meets at Trask Middle School. These club meetings begin with a business meeting that is run by the club members. The remainder of the meetings focus on a hands-on activity, community service project, guest speaker, etc.and they finish off with recreation and/or refreshments! Individually, club members also work on yearly projects and presentations that are highly encouraged, but not required. These projects are excellent learning experiences that teach young people about record keeping, completing long-term goals, public speaking, and they are also offered the opportunity to take their projects to district and state level competitions.

Current Local 4-H Needs Leslie Dill, New Hanover County’s Extension Agent in charge of 4-H Youth Development says, “We would like to expand our club offerings throughout the county. Right now, we have more club opportunities available in the north, and we would love to start new clubs in the Myrtle Grove and Carolina Beach areas.” Potential club leaders submit an application, a background and reference check will be conducted, and must complete about 3 hours of training. Some club ideas in which Leslie has seen a local interest are: • Poultry • Sewing • Cooking However, there are endless possibilities for 4-H clubs! Anyone with an interest and a passion in a specific field should contact Leslie Dill to further discuss club development. You can also visit www.4-hmall.org for a variety of ideas!

How to Join Membership in 4-H is free! There are minimal costs associated with being a club member which vary depending on the club’s activities and your personal choice of a project. The beginning of the club year is October however, enrollment is always open. Now is a great time to start contacting clubs to join or consider starting your own club! Joining is as simple as completing a 4-H enrollment form and a medical release. Bring these to the 4-H office at the Arboretum located at 6206 Oleander Dr. Contact Leslie Dill at (910) 798-7660 or leslie_dill@ncsu.edu for more information. v

Local Farmer’s Markets A Rewarding Experience for Families By Katelyn Stenersen

D

o you lack a green thumb, or the space for a garden, but simply desire to serve your family fresh produce? Shopping at one of the thriving farmer’s markets in our area will grant you access to a plethora of delicious and responsibly raised food. Every week dedicated farmers, bakers, fishermen, and craftsmen display and sell their goods in order to provide an income for their families. Each week, my family is among the many vendors at the Riverfront and Poplar Grove farmer’s markets where we sell seasonal produce and pasture raised eggs from our farm. We are blessed to be a part of the vibrant market community and are passionate about others joining us in the local food movement.

For the Entire Family Going to the market with your family on a weekly basis can be a rewarding habit that even your dog will appreciate. As you incorporate more quality foods into your family’s diet your health will directly benefit. Packaged snacks can be replaced with sweet cherry tomatoes, crunchy cucumbers or flavorful figs. As you stroll through the market you will enjoy the open air, the beautiful displays, and you may even decide to dance with your child to live music. As children see fruits and vegetables in an unadulterated state with dirt still attached, they gain a better sense of where food originates, instead of believing it is just from a store or a box. Any child from toddler to teen can be involved in the shopping experience and engaged academically while away from the classroom. Some ideas include identifying colors of flowers, learning the names of vegetables, and practicing exchanging money. Another possibility is for teenagers to have the responsibility to plan a meal, shop for the ingredients, and cook dinner for your family.

High Quality and Fresh Food There is no denying the difference between a watermelon bought from the grocery store and one from a farmer’s market. Produce in the grocery store has spent time in multiple coolers, on trucks and on the shelves before it ever reaches your cart. However, the person selling you fruits and vegetables at the market is often times the same person who grew them from seed and picked them off their vine just one day prior to when they reached your hands. Many farmers care a great deal about the quality of food they grow, and although it is more challenging, they choose to naturally fertilize their soil and to not spray their crops. At the end of the day the food you buy from the market is more flavorful, fresher and worth the drive, time, and money that is required to bring it home.

Support Local Families By shopping at the farmer’s market you are directly impacting the lives of the area families that grow, catch, or make what you purchase. When you buy straight from a producer of any product your money goes directly to them. In turn, they earn more for their product and ultimately have a better chance of succeeding and making a living by doing what they love. Farmer’s markets provide a unique opportunity for unlikely relationships between producers and consumers. These relationships cultivate trust and allow for customers to know exactly how their food is grown.

An Invitation If you have yet to visit the farmer’s market or do not frequent it on a regular basis, I invite you to come and join us as we build a supportive community centered around real, wholesome food. My husband and I, along with the other vendors, look forward to meeting you and hope to have the privilege to provide your family with quality products. See you soon! v

Back to School Breakfast Quiche Makes 12 individual muffin sized quiches The majority of the ingredients needed for this recipe can be found at the farmer’s market this time of year. These quiches are great to make in advance and serve throughout the week or send with your child to school as breakfast on the go. They also make great after-school snacks. Ingredients: • butter (to grease the muffin pan) • ½ lb mild breakfast sausage • 8 eggs • salt • pepper • ½ medium onion, diced • 1 medium squash or zucchini, diced • 1 small tomato, diced • 1 cup grated or crumbled cheese of your choice (goat cheese is available from Nature’s Way Farm)

36 | August 2014 | Wilmington Parent

Instructions: 1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees and use butter to grease your muffin pan. 2. On medium heat brown the sausage in a skillet, breaking it into small pieces. 3. Once the sausage is mostly browned add the onions and squash and sauté them in the little bit of sausage fat that drained off. If there is a lot of fat, drain some off and if there isn’t enough fat add some olive oil to the pan. Then add the tomatoes for just a bit and stir to combine it all.

4. Beat the eggs in a bowl using a fork adding a pinch each of salt and pepper, set aside.5. Add about 2 tablespoons of the sausage and onion mixture to each tin. 6. Add 1 layer of cheese to each tin. 7. Then scoop enough egg mixture into each tin to fill it about 3/4 full.8. Top each tin with some cheese. 9. Cook for 18-22 minutes or when a toothpick comes out clean. 10. Cool for 10 minutes in the pan before moving it to a plate to serve warm.
