Is Your Child Struggling in School? Below average reading skills, careless errors, poor memory and concentration, reverses letters? If this sounds like your child, we can help.
How Can Our Center Help?
First, we test and diagnose if a child has learning-related vision problems. If such a difficulty exists, a vision therapy program is recommended to meet the child's special needs. Your child will work on specific goals with a certified optometric therapist, under the supervision of a developmental optometrist. The ultimate goal is to allow the individual to perform up to his/her potential in the classroom without unnecessary struggling.
What Do I Need To Do?
If your student is in the 1st grade-college, and is struggling academically, call us to set up an initial appointment. When diagnosed early, we can significantly improve and often alleviate the problem entirely. Many insurances help cover the cost of testing.

Please remember, the holidays are always a good time to teach kids about helping others that are less fortunate. Pick a family to help from an angel tree, send cards and treats to soldiers overseas, or spend time with someone a little wiser at the senior center. No matter how little someone may have, there are many small ways that a person can help, and kindness is free! Happy Holidays!

Six Financial Lessons We Can Learn From Our Kids
N
obody wants to focus on finances during the holidays. They may hang overhead – and not in a festive, mistletoe kind of way – but most of us are pretty good at shoving the worry aside in favor of more mirth and merriment. Of course it catches up to us in January, but luckily December isn’t January. I’m not advocating blowing your budget this month, or disregarding it in any way. On the contrary, I think December is a critical time to focus on our finances; I’m just saying we might have to trick ourselves into doing so. Here’s the good news: I know just how to do it.
Watch a child giving a gift to a loved one, especially a present they made or bought themselves, and you’ll see the true spirit of the holidays, and the source of real happiness.
This month, take a closer look at the one thing you’re already focusing on this time of year – children. Our kids’ behavior during the holidays can teach us about financial priorities, about what works and what doesn’t, and how we can be truly happy. Not sure what I mean? Here are a few financial lessons that will likely be perfectly illustrated this season by the little angels in our lives.
1. Instant gratification isn’t gratifying in the long run. Ever see a child who begs for a special holiday treat, only to devour it and ask for another one a minute later? Did they even chew it? Taste it? Want it? When we indulge our every urge to spend, not only does our budget get overblown but our sense of
“needing” something becomes muddled with our sense of “wanting,” and that’s a recipe for financial disaster.
2. When we overindulge, we’re a mess. This is best illustrated fairly early on Christmas evening by a child who has spent many hours on an extended holiday sugar-and-presentsand-excitement binge and finally comes crashing down. The wailing, the tantrum, the inevitable rushed bedtime is proof that too much of a good thing is usually not so good. That’s why big holidays only come once a year; it’s also why our spending should follow the “everything in moderation” mantra.
3. Savers spread out their happiness. One year my little sister ate every piece of candy from her Christmas stocking on Christmas Day. Not only did she feel so sick she couldn’t enjoy our family’s special Christmas dinner, but she was resentful and angry days later when her siblings were still enjoying their candy a little at a time, and she had none. It’s elementary, but still a hard lesson for many adults to learn: When we spend too much at once, we’re left with too little for the long haul.
4. Size doesn’t matter. Little kids don’t know or care how much something costs. This is made clear to every parent who buys a ridiculously expensive toy kitchen or similarly large gift, only to find their child playing happily for hours in the box in which it was delivered. Instead of focusing on how much money we wish we had, perhaps we can spend this month focusing on how happy we can be with what we already have. 5. Pay attention. Kids naturally like to be the star of the show, and this is especially true this time of year. The “look at me!” phenomenon is a good reminder for how attentive we need to be to our finances. When we get distracted with other things and ignore our budgets and bills, bad things happen. 6. It feels good to share. Watch a child giving a gift to a loved one, especially a present they made or bought themselves, and you’ll see the true spirit of the holidays, and the source of real happiness. When it comes to our own finances and resources, if we’re solely focused on getting and keeping, we’re missing out on one of life’s greatest joys – giving. v Robyn Passante is a freelance journalist and mother of two who purposely saved her Christmas candy for weeks just to drive her sisters insane. Getting the Most from Gift Cards Personalize the packaging. The biggest complaint about gift cards is that they are impersonal and, well, a little boring. To make giving more fun, insert the card into a holiday ornament, the paws of a small stuffed animal, a pair of socks, a trinket box, a book, a wallet, a puzzle box or even a gift card organizer. At the very least, include a personal note explaining why you wanted this particular person to have this particular gift card.
G
ift cards have become the goto present for parents who have run out of time, ideas or—let’s be honest—holiday spirit. The National Retail Federation estimates that each holiday, eight out of 10 shoppers turn to gift cards for at least some of their purchases. Maybe that’s because the cards make especially good gifts for teachers, teens, tweens and other people who are hard to please. Easy as they are to purchase, getting the most from gift cards requires a bit of savvy. Here are a few tips:
Choose the right card. A closed loop gift card can be used only at the store or restaurant that issues it, so be sure the recipient likes what they have to offer. Prepaid bank gift cards can be used wherever a debit card would be accepted but there’s a fee for that convenience. The American Express website, for example, charges $3.95 per card, regardless of the amount.
Don’t buy off the rack. When cards are easily accessible, crooks can collect identifying numbers, using pocket scanners or old-fashioned pencil and paper. By calling the toll-free number, they find out when the card is activated and spend the balance while your present is waiting to be given. To avoid this problem, purchase cards that are kept behind the counter. Look for a scratch off pin number, and be sure it is intact. Be smart online. Don’t buy gift cards by clicking on a link in email or a text message. Even if these offers look like they come from prestigious companies, they are invariably scams that steal personal information without giving you anything in return. You’ll also want to avoid auction sites where there’s a high risk of getting a card that is counterfeit, expired or fraudulent. Look for discounts. Legitimate discounts on gift cards are available from resellers such as Plasticjungle.com, Giftcardrescue.com and Cardpool.com. Before buying, be sure the website guarantees the value of the card. Check shipping charges, too, because they can quickly offset discounts. Another way to find safe discounts is to visit giftsmart.com, a website that rates gift cards based on their features. The site also provides information about how laws governing gift cards vary from state to state. Express your spirit. Many companies sell gift cards with special messages for the holidays. Better yet, design your own card with a personal photo or message at a site like giftcard.com.
Share the joy. Some companies donate part of the price of each gift card to charity. At giftcardsforacause.com, a wide variety of cards are available for purchase, and it’s easy to designate a charity to receive a percentage of what you spend. 10 | December 2012 | Wilmington Parent
Skip the plastic. Ten billion gift cards are produced each year. Not only do they contain toxic petrochemicals, but they also create disposal problems. Some companies allow you to bypass plastic by sending an e-card directly to a mobile phone or even a Facebook page. Because this is a relatively new way of giving, be sure to alert the recipient with a card or some other tangible reminder that they’ve received a virtual gift. Get a receipt. No matter how you buy your gift card, get a receipt that includes the number on the card. If the card is lost or stolen, it’s possible to recover its value if you have documentation. Should you have a problem with a card, contact the company that issued it. If they can’t or won’t resolve the problem, complain to the FTC (877-FTC-HELP) about cards issued by retailers or Comptroller of the Currency (800613-6743) about cards issued by banks. If you become savvy about buying gift cards, you may actually want to use them to save money on your own purchases. The important thing is to treat the cards as cash because that’s exactly what they are. Don’t leave them lying around. Don’t tuck them into a drawer and forget about them. For the same reason, be sure to spend cards received during the holidays. Bankrate.com estimates that $40 billion dollars in gift card purchases went unused in the past decade. That’s like loaning money to the sponsoring companies without ever asking that it be paid back. Look for opportunities to use cards on things you or your kids really want. Take advantage of after holiday sales both on and offline. If there’s an expiration date, mark it on your calendar. For cards you really can’t use, turn to websites that will help you convert them into something more valuable. Cardhub.com has a Facebook application so people can swap cards with friends. Swapagift. com pinpoints local companies that buy gift cards for cash, usually at a deep discount. The websites that sell discounted gift cards buy them back too. Before shipping off a card, review the FAQ to be sure you understand exactly what you’ll receive in return (and how you’ll complain if there’s a problem). For example, plasticjungle.com converts cards into cash, credits on Amazon or even a donation to a favorite charity. Of course, the holidays are a terrific time to convert the odd balances on all of last year’s gift cards into donations to organizations that will make the season bright for others. Now that’s a way to rekindle holiday spirit! v Carolyn Jabs, M.A., raised three computer savvy kids including one with special needs. Bored? Let the Hunt Begin!
By Danielle Villegas
O
nce winter break begins, it will only take 24-48 hours before boredom sets in. With a few advance preparations, you can guide the bored children to hours of distraction. Here are a few ideas for scavenger hunts that will buy you precious boredom-free moments while your kids try to be the first to find every last item!
Magazine Scavenger Hunt - Give your kids a few magazines each, and list 20 items for them to find inside the magazines. Examples include a car, fashion model, camera and a pair of shoes. Instruct them to flip through the magazines and clip out the items they find on the list. First to find all the items wins.
FBI Scavenger Hunt – Have the kids work as a team to follow the clues from one item to the next. You can have the clues lead from one to the next, or there can be a list of clues that lead to each item in any order. When the kids find all the clues, have the last one be a happy ending surprise! (Personally, I like ice cream)
Geocaching – This is a high tech scavenger hunt that uses handheld GPS units to find hidden “caches” in your neighborhood. There is no need to buy an expensive GPS unit, most phones have the GPS capability to help you find these exciting treasures! The phone app, c:geo, is a free app that is easy to use and uses your phone’s GPS. Once you get started, you will be shocked at how many “caches” are hidden right under your nose!
Mall Scavenger Hunt – This one works for well-behaved teens and requires a camera. Assuming most teens have a camera on their phone, this shouldn’t be a huge problem. Give the teens a list of tasks that revolve around fast food joints, kiosks, department stores, etc. Keep the finds, free, fun, and a little weird. Give them a list of tasks and require photographic proof. Here are some ideas: 1. Take a picture with a mannequin. 2. Find someone with the initials JS and have them sign your hand, and get a picture. 3. Find something red/yellow/green hanging from the ceiling. 4. Find three different styles of trashcans. 5. Take a picture by a caution sign. 6. Try on a formal dress. 7. Get a single picture of four people (including someone on your team) with four different hair colors. 8. Try on the ugliest outfit you can gather. 9. Take a picture on a piece of living room furniture. 5 Senses in Nature Hunt – Teach your children to use all of their senses while searching for specific sounds, sights, smells, textures, and tastes. Examples: Hear – water trickling, bird chirping, leaves crunching, people laughing See – reflection in water, weeds, butterfly, fallen tree Feel – wet grass, slimy mud, smooth rock Smell – flowers, cut grass, pine Taste – For this sense you might need to hide some different fruits or other items that can be tasted and are usually grown outside. Have them find something sweet (apple), salty (nuts), bitter (lemon).
Discovery Scavenger Hunt – Let kids “discover” different items outside that have certain qualities. Make a list asking kids to discover something - big, small, open, closed, edible, hairy, sinkable, floatable, twisted, straight, and so on. v

December brings adventurous hobbits, adorable monsters, and Billy Crystal and Bette Midler on screen together—fun! Here’s a sneak peek at what’s new in theaters this month. Monsters, Inc. 3D
Rated G. In theaters December 19. Ok for kids 6+. http://disney.go.com/monstersinc/.
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey
Not yet rated; like PG-13. In theaters December 14. Ok for kids 12+. www.thehobbit.com.
Like so many other family movies lately, the Oscar-winning Monsters, Inc. is getting a new 3D theatrical release. John Goodman and Billy Crystal star in this classic Pixar movie about a group of monsters who generate their city’s power by scaring children. But they’re not so courageous when it comes to human kids contaminating their world—which is exactly what happens when little Boo (voiced by Mary Gibbs) disrupts things. Classic, brilliant and evergreen, be sure to see this movie on the big screen in 3D.
The first of Peter Jackson’s Hobbit trilogy finds Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman) swept into a quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor from the fearsome dragon Smaug. Approached out of the blue by the wizard Gandalf the Grey (Ian McKellen), Bilbo finds himself joining a company of thirteen dwarves led by the legendary warrior, Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage). Their journey will take them into the Wild and through treacherous lands swarming with Goblins, Orcs, deadly Wargs, Giant Spiders, Shapeshifters, Sorcerers, and of course, the creature named Gollum. Bilbo learns what we already know: a simple gold ring is tied to the fate of Middle Earth.
how to kick you know what, and this crime thriller has a great literary tie-in, as it’s based on a book by Lee Child. When five people are shot dead by an expert sniper in a heartland city, the cops quickly identify and arrest the culprit. But the accused man claims he’s innocent and says, “Get Jack Reacher.” Yep, that’s when Tom Cruise shows up to do some whoopin’. Directed by Christopher McQuarrie, this movie also stars Rosamund Pike, Richard Jenkins, and Robert Duvall.
Parental Guidance
PG for some rude humor. In theaters December 25. Ok for kids 9+. www.parentalguidancemovie.com/.
Jack Reacher
PG-13 for violence, language and some drug material. In theaters December 21. Ok for kids 14+. http://www.jackreachermovie.com/. Is it time for Tom Cruise to hang up his actionhero hat? I don’t think so. The star of Mission Impossible and Knight and Day still knows
After the presents are unwrapped and the dinner consumed, hop out to see this fun movie on Christmas Day. Billy Crystal plays an old school grandpa who’s accustomed to calling the shots. But he meets his match when he and his eager-to-please wife Diane (Bette Midler) agree to babysit their three grandkids when their type-A helicopter parents (Marisa Tomei, Tom Everett Scott) go away for work. You guessed it—21st century problems collide with Artie and Diane’s old school methods of tough rules.

Donate – Satisfy your desire to shop by purchasing diapers, baby clothes, formula, and other baby items. Then bring everything to your local shelter and make a donation in your child’s honor to families in need. Savings bonds – Ask family members to please use the money they would have spent on a gift to purchase a savings bond for your child. These are valuable gifts that will be appreciated later.
Special ornament – No need to go with the traditional, “Baby’s 1st Christmas”. Find an ornament that means something special to your family, or reminds you of your baby’s personality. It can be anything that will remind you of why you bought that particular ornament, and then you will be able to relay the story of each ornament year after year.
Memorable 1st Christmas By Danielle Villegas
I
t is a priceless gift, having your new baby with the family to enjoy the holiday festivities for the first time. Family members and friends will no doubt make sure your little one has plenty of gifts to unwrap. The problem of course, this exciting event is one your precious bundle will not remember. Parents can make the holidays a memorable time by resisting the temptation to purchase piles of toys; instead they can use this as an opportunity to create a memory that will last long after the twinkling lights are boxed up for the year.
Memory book – A journal, memory or brag book with well wishes and journal entries from various family members to be treasured and reread for generations. Small toys – One or two small rattles, colorful toys, or even practical items you were going to eventually purchase. Make sure they’re from “Santa” so the older siblings will remember their new brother or sister receiving their first gift from the North Pole! v

SPECIAL SECTION: Parents’ Holiday Guide
8 Tips For Keeping Your Family Connected This Holiday Season By Michele Dawson
I
t’s likely a familiar scene in your house. Your loved ones are gathered in the family room, but your spouse is on the smart phone simultaneously checking emails and playing Words with Friends, your teen’s texting fingers are flying furiously, your daughter’s ears are budded with the latest tunes, and even your youngest is perched with a laptop, playing his favorite computer game. You’re not alone. “A decade ago, most children and adolescents spent about three hours a day watching television. Today, kids are spending more than seven hours per day on entertainment media, which includes televisions, computers, phones and other electronic devices,” says Dr. Victor Strasburger, a member of the Council on Communications and Media at the American Academy of Pediatrics. Do you envision more Norman Rockwell-esque family time during the holidays? It’s possible. Or at least you can take baby steps to lure your family from the pull of their electronic gadgets and gizmos into the stuff of which memories are made. To make it a holiday season of family togetherness, why not:
1
Make a family outing of trimming the tree. Do you buy yours fresh? Make a day out of it. If you have a teen, you know requesting their presence for a family outing can be sometimes leave you preferring a trip to the dentist. Try luring them with food. Go out to breakfast before choosing the holiday tree. The enticement of piping hotcakes slathered in butter can sometimes do wonders. If you’re like many Americans who pull their artificial tree out of the garage or storage every year, there’s still plenty of opportunity to make it a family event … and you can still the start the day with going out to breakfast and get everyone going on a positive note.
2
Have a cookie baking day. Look through your favorite cookbooks and websites. Pull out a handful of recipes and let your family peruse them. Take a family vote and let the top two or three vote-getters be the cookies of the day. Once they’re baked, package some up and deliver to friends and neighbors.
24 | December 2012 | Wilmington Parent
3 4 5
Spend the day volunteering. Get into the true spirit of the season by pulling the family together to do some volunteering. Spend the day at the homeless shelter or get involved in a neighborhood clean-up. Make cards and take them to a senior center or children’s hospital. Have a wrap party. Tired of wrapping those gifts yourself? Enlist your family to help. Make some hot chocolate, turn on the holiday music and get wrapping. Make it a competition to see who can come up with the most beautiful or creative wrapping job. Go to the play or theater. The holidays always offer a wide offering of theatrical options. Find a local Nutcracker or Christmas Carol performance. If your children are young, perhaps they’ll be inspired to take up dance or acting — or reinforce their love of the arts. www.wilmingtonparent.com
6
Family game time. There are so many great family
games available. You’re sure to have at least a few of these tucked away in a closet somewhere. Try Pictionary, Apples to Apples, Bananagrams, Jenga, Scrabble, or Monopoly. Or why not go old school and just grab a deck of cards and play a favorite card game. If you’re kids still can’t quite get out of their tech frame a mind, join them in a family video game. Whether it’s Wii or Xbox, there are plenty of fun games to entertain everyone. Think dancing, bowling, basketball, even guitar playing.
7 8
Year in review. Gather your family to put together a year-
in-review book. Grab favorite photos to assemble in a book or album. Have everyone write a letter about their year. Put all the letters in the photo book. Years later it will be a treasure for every member of the family to look back upon … and it can be the beginning of a new tradition.
Declare tech-free days throughout the month.
And once the holidays are over, carry your new gadget-free family activities into the new year. That is, once your kids get their initial fill of all the new electronic toys and gismos they receive from Santa. v Michele Dawson is a freelance writer based in Phoenix, Ariz. When she’s not writing, she’s hanging out with her husband and four kids, trying to convince them to spend less time on their electronic devices.

Choose one day a week, if you think your family can tolerate it. Make that day a device-free day. Encourage family activities and mealtimes together on these days. Perhaps once they see that fun can be had without their devices, they’ll be more excited about the tech-free days with the family.

Gifts
Teachers Actually Want to Receive – and a Few They Don’t!
SPECIAL SECTION: Parents’ Holiday Guide
By Rachael Moshman
T
eachers love to feel appreciated during the holidays, and as a teacher to both small children and young adults, I receive a wide range of gifts each year. In fact, the topic of gifts is one my colleagues and I discuss frequently in the faculty lounge. While we appreciate the thought, there are definitely some gifts we could do without.
Good Ideas: School or office supplies. Teachers receive very few supplies from the school district. It is up to parents to bring in the bulk of everything from copy paper to paper towels. Not all parents do their part. Crayons, pencils, composition books and other basics are always appreciated. I know I always appreciate extra tissues and hand sanitizer during cold season!
Classroom materials. Ask your child for recommendations. A parent bought a second set of plastic dinosaurs for my block area once because she noticed they were a hot commodity while volunteering. Most teachers love to receive books for their classroom library. Coffee or tea. I love hot beverages so this is something I will always use!
hour to give, your child’s teacher will have something you can do to help, such as stapling papers, or cutting out wall decorations.
Children’s artwork. Yes, we have tons of it, but it still makes us smile. This is especially true when it is accompanied by a heartfelt letter of thanks.
Gift cards. If you want to give us something you know we’ll be able to use, gift cards are a safe choice. They are easy to carry home and we can get exactly what we need. I usually purchase something for my classroom.
Skip: Anything with an apple on it. I have mugs, hand towels, stationary sets, utensils, tote bags and more covered in apples. One of my colleagues was even given long underwear with apples printed on them! Ditto on anything with “#1 Teacher” or “World’s Best Teacher” printed on it!
Lotions, body sprays or soaps. We also have tons of this. Everyone has their own preferences when it comes to personal products. Scented items give me migraines. I can’t even have them in my classroom.
My colleagues who aren’t caffeine enthusiasts gladly share these types of gifts with those of us who are. However, in my experience, most teachers are happy to have something to help them boost their energy level during their planning period.
Homemade baked goods. While we love the warm intentions, being given something we might not like or be able to eat puts us in an awkward situation. I admit that I’ve immediately thrown away plates of cookies or muffins that looked unappealing – or worse – unsanitary.
Healthy snack baskets. In a sea of chocolate and baked goods, having
Please remember - we don’t expect a gift at all. A warm smile and “thanks for all you do” fills our hearts with joy. However, if you feel compelled to give a gift, please don’t make us lug home our 13th set of apple shaped salt and pepper shakers! v
something healthy to snack on is much appreciated. One of my favorite gifts was a basket filled with individual packages of pretzels, nuts and granola bars, plus fresh apples and oranges.
Volunteering your time. This is the most valuable gift you can offer a teacher. One year I even had a mom who volunteered to recruit other classroom volunteers! That was a priceless gift! Even if you just have an

I Won’t Grow Up! The holidays are a perfect excuse to bring out your inner child, and it’s good for your health too! Physically your family will benefit from the activity; mentally you will feel more relaxed and child-like. Here are some activities you may think you have grown out of that could revive your work-out routine! • Climb a tree – Kids love to climb trees, don’t let them have all the fun!
National Handwashing Awareness Week
• Hopscotch – There are so many variations of hopscotch, pick a different one every time.
December 2-8, 2012 is National Handwashing Awareness Week. Celebrate clean hands and help prevent the flu by teaching your children the importance of washing their hands thoroughly and some other helpful tips.
• Jump rope - get the kids involved and try double-dutch! • Tag – Let the kids be “it” and run! • Hula Hoop – It’s good for the abs…once you get the hang of it.
The 4 Principles of Hand Awareness: 1. WASH your hands when they are dirty and BEFORE eating. 2. DO NOT cough into your hands. 3. DO NOT sneeze into your hands. 4. Above all, DO NOT put your fingers into your eyes, nose, or mouth. On Wednesday December 5, 2012 at noon, join Henry the Hand in “Linking” clean hands with your family, friends and community by e-mailing them the www.henrythehand.com website “link” asking them to teach “Do not touch the T Zone” the only portal of entry into the human body for all respiratory infections. Help Henry “Spread the Word Not the Germs” about hand washing and Hand Awareness in order to avoid any “flu” or flu-like epidemics this year. Show Henry you care about clean hands and respect the role “Our Hands” play in the spread of infection. By e-mailing the message to 10 friends or family we show OUR strength and commitment to clean hands to help prevent the spread of disease. The power is in your hands to prevent the Flu! Practice the 4 principles of Hand Awereness and do not touch the T Zone! These behaviors will ensure you and your family “stay well” this season. www.henrythehand.com

After Hurricane Sandy caused devastation on the coast of the Jersey Shore, Wrightsville Beach Elementary School “adopted” Hugh J. Boyd Elementary School in Seaside Heights, NJ for a twoweek period. During this time, WBES raised money to help the NJ school and its students obtain many necessities that were lost due to the major storm.
Good Behavior Rewarded at Trask The Trask Middle School “Chef’s Table” is an excellent example of how a school’s child nutrition program is an integral part of the learning environment. Trask’s cafeteria is proud to support student’s healthy eating habits, but they also support character development by encouraging students to make good choices and have positive behavior. The “Chef’s Table” program is a way to recognize students for their good character and kindness to others. Each week, one student from each grade level is selected and treated to a special VIP lunch prepared and served by the cafeteria manager, Rob Newton, at the Chef’s Table. The selected student and a chosen guest are treated to a fine dining experience with Chef Newton at the specially decorated table, complete with fine China, glassware, and table linens. This beneficial program has caught nationwide attention! This year, New Hanover County and Trask Middle School were presented with the USDA Best Practices Award during the state’s Child Nutrition Administrators Annual Conference. This national award given to Trask Middle School cafeteria and manager Rob Newton was 1 of just 5 awarded to the state. The Trask Child Nutrition Team was selected for this prestigious award for its innovative “Chef’s Table” and outstanding customer service.

Gifts That Give Throughout the Year
I The anticipation of the arrival of a monthly package— paired with the excitement of opening it up to see what’s inside— has fueled the popularity of subscription boxes.
t is always fun to get a package in the mail, especially when the contents are a surprise. The anticipation of the arrival of a monthly package—paired with the excitement of opening it up to see what’s inside—has fueled the popularity of subscription boxes. These boxes come in many varieties ranging from health and beauty boxes for adults to craft boxes for children. If you are in the market to try out some great green products, here are a few subscription boxes to check out.
Eco-Emi was founded by a woman that learned the importance of living a green life after losing a beloved dog to a rare disease. She began the company to offer samples of green products to those interested. The goal of Eco-Emi’s subscription service is to take the guesswork and expense out of the equation when trying to find natural products. Monthly boxes include a minimum of 5 samples and include such items as beauty
products, food and cleaning supplies. The monthly subscription cost is $15. Eco-Emi can be found at www.ecoemi.com.
Yuzen was established by a couple who believe in promoting companies that make eco-friendly products while also focusing on community building, fair-trade, sustainability, wellness, or a combination of those missions. Each month Yuzen delivers a selection of products that are carefully chosen because of their purity and quality. Many of the items included in the box are either full sized or premium sample sized giving subscribers a chance to have more than one encounter with a product. Items range from beauty products to food samples. Each month’s box is valued at $60 or more yet the subscription cost is only $26 a month. Find Yuzen at www.yuzenbox.com.
Ecocentric Mom, created by a mother of four children, is a company “dedicated to helping people live a greener, healthier lifestyle by introducing them to the most ethical and honest businesses with the highest quality natural and green products.” The company offers 3 different subscription boxes. The Baby Discovery Box features products and food for babies up to 18 months old. The Mom-to-Be Discovery Box and Mom Discovery Box includes items such as skin care, make-up, organic food, spa products and items for the home (Mom-to-Be is focused on the needs of pregnant women). Monthly subscriptions are $17. Visit Ecocentric Mom at www.ecocentricmom.com.
Green Kid Crafts is the original kids crafting subscription box. The mom-owned company puts together wonderful monthly boxes for children that include materials to make 3 eco-friendly crafts. All materials in the box are non-toxic and sustainable and encourage development through art, science and imaginative play. Subscriptions are $19.50 per month. Green Kid Crafts can be found at www.greenkidcrafts.com. Subscription boxes make great gifts. Please check out our online magazine at www.wilmingtonparent.com to see how you can win a Conscious Box full of natural, sustainable samples. v Brandy Metzger is a freelance writer with a passion for green living. Christmas craft for kids Winter Sweetness
Gingerbread houses getting tiresome year after year? How about an alternative? A Marshmallow igloo is an easy and fun holiday craft kids of ALL ages will love. Materials needed: Paper plate Miniature marshmallows Frosting Dixie paper bathroom cups (or other small paper cups) Assorted candy How to make it: Place paper plate upside down on table. Smear a glob of icing a bit to the side. Place the cup upside down on the icing. Smear icing all over the outside of the cup. Start placing marshmallows on the cup. To make the “door” to the igloo, dip marshmallows in frosting and stick them together until you have made a marshmallow arch (do this towards the middle of the plate, you can make a sidewalk, too!) Decorate with colorful candy. Make more than one to create a North Pole village!
Crafty Wilmington Fun for Kids Making holiday ornaments and crafts at home can be fun, but the clean-up is a pain. When you and the kids feel that creative urge, why not visit one to the places listed below for a crafty field trip! The kids can let their artistic side run wild, and your house is spared the colorful consequences. Holiday Kids @ CAM - Saturday, Dec. 8th 12-3pm. There will be holiday music and a variety of holiday-themed art activities. Art Exposure in Hampstead – Located on US Hwy 17 in Hampstead, just look for the big barn! Art classes year-round and special themed classes for children through adults. Paint-N-Play Pottery Studio – Bring the kids and paint your own ornaments, holiday plates, or ceramic Christmas trees. v
