Pediatric Dentistry "Baby Teeth" • Babies can begin teething at 3 months old, however it is more common for babies to begin teething around 6 to 7 months old. • The first teeth that will appear are usually the lower incisors or front teeth. • By the age of 3, children should have their complete set of 20 "pearly whites." • It is never too early to begin a regular brushing routine with your child. • The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and American Academy of Pediatrics recommend a dental visit when baby's first tooth comes in or by baby's first birthday.

Is Your Child Struggling in School? Below average reading skills, careless errors, poor memory and concentration, reverses letters? If this sounds like your child, we can help.

How Can Our Center Help?

First, we test and diagnose if a child has learning-related vision problems. If such a difficulty exists, a vision therapy program is recommended to meet the child's special needs. Your child will work on specific goals with a certified optometric therapist, under the supervision of a developmental optometrist. The ultimate goal is to allow the individual to perform up to his/her potential in the classroom without unnecessary struggling.

What Do I Need To Do?

If your student is in the 1st grade-college, and is struggling academically, call us to set up an initial appointment. When diagnosed early, we can significantly improve and often alleviate the problem entirely. Many insurances help cover the cost of testing.

St. Patrick’s Day Dye-Free Snack For our favorite little green holiday, it’s easy to toss some green food coloring into the mix and create some simple green popcorn or pancakes. Below is a recipe that will impress your little leprechauns without all that dye. It’s also a fun way to sneak in a serving of veggies!

St. Patty’s Mac and Cheese Ingredients: • One 14.5 oz box of whole wheat pasta shapes One bag pre-washed baby spinach or one package frozen spinach (defrosted & moisture squeezed out) • 3 tablespoons butter • 3 tablespoons white flour • 1 1/2 cups milk • 3 cups grated cheddar cheese • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional) • Salt and Pepper to taste Directions: 1. Over medium heat, drizzle a little oil into a sauté pan. 2. Add spinach and wait until it reduces in size and is soft, turning occasionally.

6 | March 2013 | Wilmington Parent

Add wilted spinach to a food processor and puree until smooth. (For frozen spinach, put defrosted spinach directly in food processor) 3. Cook and drain pasta according to package directions. 4. Melt butter in a pan over medium heat. Add flour, whisk and cook for one minute. Slowly add milk continuing to whisk until combined. Continue stirring and allow the rue to come to a slow bubble. 5. Add the shredded cheese and stir until cheese melts and is combined. 6. Add nutmeg, cayenne, salt and pepper. Stir in spinach puree until combined. 7. Add drained pasta to the cheese sauce and stir to coat pasta. 8. Serve immediately or pour into casserole dish, top with some additional shredded cheese if desired, and bake on 350 degrees just until the cheese is melty and bubbly.

When air quality is poor, it causes respiratory problems, especially among children and those already suffering from asthma and other chronic lung illnesses.

The federal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) uses the “Air Quality Index” (AQI) to help the community know when air quality reaches unhealthy levels so they can take appropriate action to protect their health. The AQI is divided up into different colors – each color corresponds to the levels of air pollution and recommended level of outdoor activity and health concerns. The best way to “know the code” is to sign up for a daily air quality forecast sent to you via email from the NC Division of Air Quality and US Environmental Protection Agency. Fuel for Your Athlete

S

pring sports are right around the corner, and the winter sports will be wrapping up soon. If you are a parent of a child who loves any sport you know the importance of food. But did you know you can help them grow more muscle and be ready for their next practice if you help them eat at the right times? Why? Carbohydrates provide the body and brain with energy to move and think, but the wrong ones will end up working against your child on the field, in the pool, on the ice, in the gym or on the court. So here are some quick guidelines I have used with our youth ice hockey team. • The day before a game hydrate with water, juice, milk, no sodas or caffeine containing drinks. This will help your youth athlete’s muscles to get ready to compete. • Human muscles and our brain (needed for school and sports) are 75% water. If your player is thirsty they are already 5% dehydrated. That means they may be missing up to 2 cups of water from their body. • Remember: Your child needs to have endurance for the entire game that means fueling the body to WIN!

• Before game breakfast: Corn flakes (plain or frosted), Cheerios, Captain Crunch, etc. with milk. Anything with too much fiber/serving before a game may cause cramping in the stomach. • Fruit is a good choice an hour before the game: Bananas, grapes, raisins, peaches and apples. Some people like oranges; others say they aren’t great before games. • In between games: Eat and drink, but not greasy, fatty foods, as these choices will slow you down. You need quick energy. If you must go to McDonalds, my 10 yr. old son loves pancake, no syrup, and fruit smoothies in between his ice hockey games. This is good only if you have a 2 hr. window. • For only an hour between games: PB & J sandwich, fruit, yogurt, Gatorade, crackers, gummies, granola bars are good choices. • After the game, eat good lean, non- fatty protein, with good carbs (bread, rice, pasta, potatoes, fruit, chocolate milk/milk), a protein bar (Cliff Bar, for example). You need to refuel your muscles  Good luck with all your upcoming tryouts and games. Fuel like a champion!! For the classroom and your favorite sport! v Kimberly Smith Lukhard, MS, RD, LDN is the owner of Hockey Mom RD, a nutrition coaching company for children and parents located in Greenville, NC, visit the website at www.hockeymomrd.com or email kem@hockeymomrd.com. round here we talk about screen time a lot. A lot. Specifically, I talk about how much screen time my kids have already had, and how much they’re at risk for losing, and they talk about how much more they need. “Pleeeeeease can we have more screen time?”

Kids these days are all about the screen time. I try to keep a strict limit on the amount of time their little eyeballs (and developing brains) are zoned in on a screen – be it the TV, Mom’s Kindle Fire or Dad’s iPhone – but it seems you can hardly help but expose your kids to at least some swiping, clicking and watching now and again.

Five Apps and Websites to Help Teach Money Management

Ron & Sharon Harris, DVM Dr. Rebecca Simmons - Resnick, DVM Stan Griffith, DVM Amy K. White, DVM • Vaccines • Surgery • Geriatric • Dentistry Wellness • X-Rays • Spay/Neuter • Boarding • Bathing Family owned & operated since 1999

In my house right now that screen time is generally divided between PBS Kids, educational games, and some form of Angry Birds. And the deeper they’re getting into catapulting costumed bird heads, the more feverishly I’m beginning to research more productive ways we might use these idle minutes. Assuming I might not be the only parent who’d like to load her iPhone with something that will give her children lifelong skills, not just a penchant for squashing dopey green pig heads, I’ve come up with a list of apps and websites focused on money management for small children. From videos on spending to games on saving, this list is a win-win for parents and little kids – who someday will need to buy their own precious screens.

For Me, For You, For Later (free website): Sesame Street and PNC Bank have teamed up to offer small children an entertaining window into the world of spending and saving. Found on the SesameStreet.org website, the series of videos featuring Elmo and the Sesame Street gang introduce concepts of money, saving and spending. My 3-year-old was riveted by the short videos and wanted more. These are great educational snippets for grocery store lines and doctor’s office waiting rooms.

www.portersneckvets.com

Coin Math ($1.99; compatible with iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad): The first step to understanding how to manage and save money is learning how to count it. Coin Math helps little ones identify and count pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters. It also teaches the basics of how to shop and make change.

Peter Pig’s Money Counter (Free; Compatible on Android devices): Geared for kids ages 4-7, this money counting game is similar to Coin Math but compatible with Android phones and Kindle devices. With the help of a friendly piggy bank, kids practice sorting and counting coins to earn virtual money, all the while learning fun facts about U.S. currency. Save! The Game (Free; Compatible with iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad): Kids can learn the rewards of saving through this game by MassMutual, which takes them on a 3D adventure collecting virtual money while avoiding the iWannas, impulse items like cheap toys and candy that lurk around every corner.

Savings Spree ($2.99; Compatible with iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad): At $2.99 this is a pricier option, but it’s also an award winner and highly rated by parents. Savings Spree targets kids ages 7-11, teaching them how the choices they make can add up to big savings or big expenses, depending on how they choose to spend their money. Savings Spree shows kids how they can save their money for short-term goals (like a bike), spend wisely, donate to others or invest money so the amount they have will grow. v Robyn Passante is a freelance writer and mother of two who can never seem to get all the pigs. Parents Shouldn’t Make Snap Judgments about SnapChat

B

y now, most parents have heard of SnapChat, the phenomenally popular new messaging app that allows users to annotate and send photos and very short videos to their friends. Unlike other messages, SnapChats are supposed to disappear in ten seconds. Kids who are tired of having their lives searched and analyzed on Facebook love that spontaneity. As one college blogger put it, SnapChat is fun “without the terrifying permanence of the rest of our technology.” In one way, this is good news for parents who have been trying to convince kids to be discrete about what they post on Facebook, Twitter and other social networking sites. Most young people are keenly aware that Facebook can be reviewed by everyone from romantic partners to college admissions officers, employers and even law enforcement. Timeline made it even more obvious that Facebook is a biographical record, and many people, including teens, started using it for what Jenna Wortham of the New York Times “success theater,” a cautious, curated version of their lives. As everyone knows, real life is messier than that, especially in adolescence. SnapChat is appealing in part because it allows kids to share their ever-changing moods without having to worry that a fleeting moment will be held against them. Of course, any alert parent can see where this is going. 1) Part of what prompts all those moods is the awakening of sexual feelings. 2) You can never assume anything digital is truly gone. Most of the 5 million messages being sent everyday on SnapChat are not sexual. Instead, they are quirky, momentary impressions of things the sender finds goofy, funny or touching. Sharing these tidbits with friends does deepen relationships. The youthful founders of SnapChat seem wise beyond their years when they write, “There is value in the ephemeral. Great conversations are magical… because they are shared, enjoyed, but not saved.” The same thing could be said about romance and even sex. And that’s why SnapChat creates concerns for adults who can easily imagine impulsive teens using the service to send provocative or even obscene pictures of themselves. This is where parents need to take a deep breath. Despite media attention to the subject, sexting is not rampant among teenagers. The most authoritative research study from the Crimes Against Children Research Center at the University of New Hampshire found that, among children 10 to 17, only one percent had shared explicit images of themselves or others and only 7 percent had received such an image. Some people worry that SnapChat will make such behavior more tempting because it promises to erase all evidence. Although parents may long to shove this genie back into its bottle, that’s not possible. Facebook has already introduced its own self-destruct program called Poke and there are other imitators in the works. A better strategy is to help children think through the rewards and risks of Snapchat and its competitors. Here are some suggestions.

Ask. Don’t assume your child is using SnapChat to send or receive provocative pictures. Download the program so you understand how it works. Then ask your child about his or her experiences. Are the kids at school using the app? What kind of photos does your child like to

10 | March 2013 | Wilmington Parent

send? What kind of images has he or she received? Is the self-destruct feature exciting or annoying?

Encourage. There are many creative and constructive ways to use Snapchat. In fact the vision described on the SnapChat website is actually quite wholesome: “We believe in sharing authentic moments with friends. It’s not all about fancy vacations, sushi dinners, or beautiful sunsets. Sometimes it’s an inside joke, a silly face, or greetings from a pet fish….sharing those moments should be fun. Communication is more entertaining when it’s with the people who know us best. And we know that no one is better at making us laugh than our friends.” This could be a prompt for dinner table conversation or a quote that hangs on the refrigerator.

Inform. Be sure your child understands that anything digital can be replicated. Although SnapChat reduces the likelihood that a photo will be distributed without permission, it doesn’t eliminate it completely. The recipient of a message can always grab the screen shot. Yes, the sender will be notified if this happens but, if the image is compromising, the damage will be done. Recipients can also use another camera to surreptitiously capture a titillating image. The bottom line is that sending another person a photo of private parts is ALWAY illadvised. There simply is no such thing as “safe sext.” Enforce. These conversations will go better if parents tune into the underlying appeal of SnapChat. Today’s kids intuitively understand that every photo doesn’t need to be saved. Every whim doesn’t need to be scrutinized. Every thought doesn’t deserve a permanent record. At the same time, as every happily married couple knows, sharing these transitory moments really can strengthen a relationship. As is so often the case, parents need to provide the information and structure that will allow children to harness the potential of SnapChat, without stumbling into its pitfalls. v Carolyn Jabs, M.A., raised three computer savvy kids including one with special needs. he Blue Ribbon Run, now in its second year, is Wilmington’s only event that raises awareness and funds for colon cancer. The race is dedicated to two local moms, Julie Brown and Christina Gianoplus, who lost their lives to colon cancer in 2011. The goal of this event is to help save lives by raising money—100% of which goes to colon cancer research via the American Cancer Society. Last year, the Blue Ribbon Run raised close to $60,000; this year we’re aiming higher--$75,000! To those who helped make last year’s race such a success, “please accept our heartfelt thanks,” says Ana Boudreau, sister of Julie Brown. The hope for this year is to build on last year’s momentum with even greater participation. Ana and other organizers hope that more businesses and individuals will lend their support through sponsorships, donations, and registering to run. The 2nd Annual Blue Ribbon Run takes place on Saturday, March 23 at 4pm at Autumn Hall. A post-race reception takes place at Dockside Restaurant from 5:30 – 7:30pm; trolley shuttle service will be available from Autumn Hall. Many thanks to Coldwell Banker Seacoast Advantage for being the event sponsor and to Dockside Restaurant for sponsoring the postrace reception. If you want to contribute, sponsor, volunteer, walk or run, please go to www. theblueribbonrun.com; to register, go to www. its-go-time.com. Come join this community effort to kick butt on colon cancer! v

| Jane Louise Boursaw

March brings a “Wizard of Oz” prequel, a re-imagining of Jack and the Beanstalk, and an alien movie based on a Stephenie Meyer book. Here’s a sneak peek at what’s new in theaters this month. Oz the Great and Powerful

Rated PG for sequences of action and scary images, and brief mild language. In theaters March 8. Ok for kids 9+. disney.go.com/thewizard

Jack the Giant Slayer

PG-13 for intense scenes of fantasy action violence, some frightening images and brief language. In theaters March 1. Ok for kids 13+. jackthegiantslayer.warnerbros.com This re-imagining of the classic fairytale finds Nicholas Hoult (“Warm Bodies”) playing Jack, a young man who battles against giants to save the Earth. As the giants fight to reclaim the land they once lost, Jack comes face to face with the unstoppable warriors he thought only existed in legends. Bryan Singer directs this epic 3D adventure, which also stars Eleanor Tomlinson as Princess Isabelle; Stanley Tucci as the deceitful Lord Roderick; Ian McShane as the besieged King Brahmwell; Bill Nighy as the giants’ leader General Fallon; and Ewan McGregor as the palace guard Elmont.

The “Wizard of Oz” gets a prequel with this origin story about the one and only “man behind the curtain.” James Franco plays Oscar Diggs, a small-time circus magician with dubious ethics who’s hurled away from dusty Kansas to the vibrant Land of Oz. At first he thinks he’s hit the jackpot of fame and fortune -- until he meets three witches, Theodora (Mila Kunis), Evanora (Rachel Weisz), and Glinda (Michelle Williams), who are not convinced he is the great wizard everyone’s been expecting. As he’s drawn into the epic problems facing the Land of Oz, Oscar puts his magical arts to use and transforms himself not only into the great and powerful Wizard of Oz, but also into a better man.

The Croods

PG for some scary action. In theaters March 22. Ok for kids 7+. www.thecroodsmovie.com

This comedy adventure follows the world’s first Prehistoric family as they embark on a journey of a lifetime. When the cave that’s always shielded them from danger is destroyed, the Croods travel across a spectacular landscape and discover an incredible new world filled with fantastic creatures, thus changing their outlook forever. The all-star voice cast includes Nicolas Cage, Emma Stone, Ryan Reynolds, Catherine Keener, Cloris Leachman and Clark Duke.

G.I. Joe: Retaliation

Not yet rated; likely PG-13. In theaters March 28. Ok for kids 14+. http://www.gijoemovie.com/.

This follow-up to 2009’s “G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra” finds the team not only fighting their mortal enemy Cobra, but also contending with threats from within the government that jeopardize their very existence. Basically, it’s nonstop action from start to finish, including lots of gun violence. Directed by Jan M. Chu, the cast includes Adrianne Palicki, Channing Tatum, Bruce Willis and Dwayne Johnson.

The Host

PG-13 for some sensuality and violence. In theaters March 29. thehostthefilm.com

Is “The Host” the next “Twilight”? Anything’s possible. Based on a book by Stephenie Meyer, this movie stars Saoirse Ronan as Melanie Stryder, a human girl who’s injected with a parasitic alien soul. But instead of carrying out her race’s mission of taking over the Earth, “Wanda” -- as she’s come to be known -- forms a bond with her host and sets out to help other humans. Directed by Andrew Niccol (“In Time”), this sci-fi thriller also stars Diane Kruger, Frances Fisher, Jake Abel, Max Irons, William Hurt and Boyd Holbrook.

A Mom’s Guide to Being a Great Soccer Coach Rachael Moshman Focus on fun, not winning. If you have been asked to coach or be an assistant on a recreational team, chances are you may be overwhelmed at the thought of creating a successful team. Most local soccer teams are for purely recreational purposes and are not meant to be highly competitive. As the new coach on the block, set a positive example for your team and the parents. Frequently remind the players that the main objective is to have fun. The secondary goal is to learn soccer skills. Try to not mention winning. You may see many other coaches focusing on the win. This can cause anxiety and unnecessary pressure. The more aggressive the coach, the more unstable the atmosphere will be for kids and parents.

Don’t take it so seriously. Kids have a lot on their schedules with homework, school activities, and sports. With a recreational team, try to remember that your players have other things going on in their lives. Highly competitive teams may practice several times a week for hours at a time. If you’re working with a recreational team try to keep practices to just once or twice a week for about an hour. Always keep practices fun. As the coach, you set the tone for the players and the parents. Use practice time to teach new skills through team-building games. Often more aggressive coaches spend practices running laps and doing drills the whole time. Encourage your players to develop a love of being active. Forced exercise that isn’t enjoyable will most likely have the opposite effect.

Know the players. Avoid calling your players by the number on their jerseys during games. This makes parents think you didn’t take the time to know the names of the players on your team. Make sure you know everyone’s name by the second game. Then you can shout encouragement and congratulations from the sidelines, addressing players by name. Kids will respond to this much quicker than just calling out their number. Playing on a soccer team is a good way to learn teamwork, good sportsmanship and the joy of being active. You will find that your team will be a success if you avoid being the aggressive coach. Players that are enjoying themselves will win more games than players that are stressed - not that it matters, of course. You’re just in it for the fun! v Rachael Moshman is a mom, freelance writer, blogger and family advocate. She knows nothing about soccer, but enjoys cheering on her daughter. Mosley Graduates

Brunswick County Schools now has an ebook collection for students and teachers!

Fourteen Mosley Performance Learning Center scholars recently earned their high school diplomas! CONGRATULATIONS GRADUATES!

As part of its “Today a Reader, Tomorrow a Leader” initiative, the school district has more than 3,100 ebooks. Individual schools have anywhere from 50 to more than 300 ebooks readily available. The school system is happy to provide this opportunity for the children and looks forward to continually growing the digital collections.

What is Mary S. Mosley PLC?

Ebooks are accessible through www.bcswan.net/ebooks on most web browsers. Students and teachers are provided login information to ensure access to the books.

Mosley is a non-traditional (not alternative) high school in Wilmington (the 5th PLC school in the state of North Carolina). Students, who may not be succeeding in a traditional high school setting, will appreciate the setting of the PLC School. Here, they are challenged to develop marketable skills in preparation for college and/or the workplace. Students are provided with internships, dual college enrollment, and technical training. To learn more about this school, visit www.nhcs.net/mosleyplc.

Lake Forest Academy Grant Award Lake Forest Academy is one of 1100 schools in the United States to receive a Lowe’s Toolbox for Education grant. The award is for $5,000 to be used for the purchase of twenty eReaders. The eReaders will not only expand the school’s library but will also allow current technology to be put in the hands of the children on a daily basis. Lowe’s Charitable and Educational Foundation supports this parent-initiated school improvement grant for public education projects that help Kindergarten through 12th grades nationwide. Visit www.toolboxforeducation.com for information on grant eligibility and application process.

Is My Child Ready for Camp? Danielle Villegas Half-Day Camp – New campers will feel more comfortable if they start out with a half-day camp geared towards basic pre-school skills, dance, art, or simple sports skills. Once a child is toilet trained, able to easily spend a few hours away from their parents, and are not fearful of exploring new things – then they should be capable of attending a half-day camp. Typical ages – 3-6 years old

Day Camp - Provide structured, summer fun while sharing experiences with family through day camp. This is most appropriate for children who have already attended full-day preschools or Kindergarten and can follow rules throughout the day. Children who have their verbal skills down pat and can easily express their needs are usually ready for a full-day camp. Day camps can also be a more cost effective way for older children to experience camp without the added overnight expenses. Typical ages – 7-10 years old Overnight Camp - Consider overnight camps as appropriate for children who have had varied and positive experiences of being away from home, and who have good self-care skills. Overnight camps allow children to make a few of their own decisions and explore the world around them without mom and dad to offer advice. If your child is able to make basic decisions, interact with other children without fear, and happily try new experiences, then they may be ready to spend a few days to a week away at camp! Typical ages – 10 years old and up (some are ready as young as 7)

How to know if your teen is ready to be a Junior Counselor:

Teens who are ready to take on a leadership role and want to be a positive role model to young campers may want to try camp as a Junior Counselor. Each camp has its own requirements, but here are a few standard qualifications. • Teens who are well-suited for a leadership role at camp should demonstrate these qualities: patient, responsible, reliable, enjoys kids, follows rules, and demonstrates good judgement. • Should have experience with extended time away at overnight camps. Most camps require previous attendance of the camp. • Typically are 15 years of age or older. • Able to obtain recommendation letters from teachers. • Must pass an interview process. • If camp is affiliated with a club or organization, teens often must be active in the organization. • Must attend pre-camp training. • Open availability during the summer. v

ur easy-to-use Camp Guide grid is here! Summer camp is a time to create lasting memories and friendships, let our guide help you choose a summer camp that fits your child’s interests and comfort level. Day camp programs are listed first, followed by residential camp listings for those kids ready for the full summer camp experience!

In the left grid margin you’ll find the name of the camp (and affiliated agency, where appropriate), address, phone number, and web site. Continue across the page to learn what ages the camp is designed for, followed by session dates. Camps offering transportation will carry the “Yes” designation. Camp types are , (S) summer, (H) half-day, and (F) full/extended day. Summer programs are typically a few hours each day, half-day is usually a

morning or afternoon session, full day programs run all day, and extended day programs offer before and/or after care. Next, find camp activities – categories are labeled (AR) arts, (AD) adventure, (SC) science, (SP) sports, and (AC) academics. With so many exciting opportunities, it can be difficult to choose one, or even two. Remember to come out to our 10th annual Summer Camp Fair on Saturday, March 9th, at Independence Mall. Packages of Love Danielle Villegas

W

hether it’s your child’s first time away at camp or they are camp regulars, every child enjoys receiving a little love from home. For parents it’s a way to stay connected to your children and tug them back into your world for just a moment. Before you pack all that affection into a care package extravaganza, get a little advice to prevent any disappointment.

Check the camp rules. Every camp has different rules. Read up on camp

Ask the experts - kids. Ask veteran camp kids what they wished for most. Were they bored in the evening and looking for a quiet game to play? What did some kids have that were always the object of admiration? Glow sticks? Battery-operated fans? Books are an exception to the “no care packages” rule and graphic novels usually get popular and get passed around.

Keep it personal. Artwork from younger siblings, or letters from home

Think group fun and solo time. Send cards, Mad Libs, a book of puzzles, anything that can be shared with everyone or used alone. Sweat the details. Don’t forget the little things that can be overlooked but essential. You can’t do a book of puzzles without a pencil and of course – a pencil sharpener, and those can be hard to come by at camp. Did you send a new water bottle, how about some individual flavor packets to go with it? Make sure you send a Sharpie to go with that autograph pillow! If you are restricted by a no-care-packages policy, send letters, origami swans, a goofy drawing, a big crayon heart, and embrace a moment away from consumer culture. Care packages can get out of hand. Camp is a great time to stop focusing on the outside world and all its stuff and rather focus on authentic fun and face-to-face friendships! v

Care Package Themes

Custom-Made Care Packages

The Boredom Buster. Sure, camp has tons of activities planned for your kid. But there’s still plenty of downtime. Keep boredom at bay with a package full of puzzles, Mad Libs, brainteasers, mazes, or other pencilpushing entertainments. If you send a deck of cards, include directions on how to play some of your favorite card games from your own childhood. A book of magic tricks would make a fun ice breaker too!

Need a little help? Check out these places for custom-made packages. You can choose what you want to include and they can send it, or just tell them a little about your child and let them create the perfect package!

The Bookworm. At home, it may be near impossible to pry your child from the TV, but camp offers a great excuse to get him hooked on books. Include the latest popular read, plus throw in an oldie but goodie. If reading is not your child’s favorite activity, try some graphic novels to get them started. Primp and Pamper. With all that dirt, bug repellent, and nature, it’s possible your kid could use a little box of glamour. Pack up some cool flip flops, a new shower caddy, and some potions and lotions that smell nice for a mid-summer pick-me-up. Or get the whole bunk involved with a Spa in a Box: send enough nail polish, cotton balls, polish remover, and files for a pedicure party. Your kid’s friends will have the coolest toes in town. The Grab Bag. Sometimes the most fun part of opening a package is the incredible randomness of what’s inside. Great ideas – temporary tattoos, activity books that use invisible ink, a magic 8 ball, and some stationary for sending letters home (don’t forget the stamps)! Throw in a pillowcase in a bright color and a permanent marker for your child’s bunkmates to autograph. Include a few magazines, a Frisbee, a set of water guns, some art supplies like string for friendship bracelets, or colored paper and a paper airplane book. An address book is a thoughtful touch, so your child can record the contact info for all her new friends!

Learning Express – They have an entire section of fun camp related items! They have a camp box and will even help you send it. www.eswak.com – Create your own or let them choose, you can even choose the date you want the package to arrive. If you don’t know the camp address, they can get that for you too! www.camppacs.com – Whether they are away at camp, boarding school, or it’s just their birthday, they will put together a package filled with high quality items you child will love! www.just4camp.com – Duffle bags or backpacks filled with high quality toys, games, and books – no junk! Personalized for everyone from 1st timers to hip teens. www.thewrinkledegg.com – Tell them about your child’s hobbies and interests and they will pick out a package full of fun! www.beyondbookmarks.com – Don’t let a week go by without a mail-call surprise! If you join their camp club you can save money on your packages too!

restrictions before sending anything. Many camps have banned food in packages, and don’t bother trying to sneak it in – they will check! Some camps have even banned packages altogether, except for necessities. This is because some kids get packages and others don’t, this causes children to have hurt feelings. In other camps, it’s a care package free-for-all!

Bounce, Flip, Climb, Play!

Bike Safety Basics

Instead of your kids using the living room as a gymnastics arena, why not bring them someplace a little more padded and capable of withstanding an energetic preschoolers bouncing. Most gymnastics centers offer Open Gym times. These are unstructured, but supervised times when they allow guests to come and use the gymnastics facilities and equipment. Your kids can get a good workout, practice climbing a rope, play in the foam pit, bounce on the trampoline, or try balancing on the beams. Bring the kids and let them flip and jump to their hearts content! Your furniture, and your kids, will thank you!

Temperatures are rising and spring is around the corner! As kids start pulling their bikes out of the garage, make sure they know the rules of the road!

Open Gym Locations:

Number one rule – Wear a Helmet! The single most effective safety device available to reduce head injury and death from bicycle crashes is a helmet. If your child is reluctant to wear a helmet, try letting him or her choose his own.

Gymnastics Unlimited 301-G North Green Meadows Drive, Wilmington Times & ages: Tuesday 8pm ages: 15 and older Friday 3:30-4:30 ages: 1-1/2 to 6 years (all children under 6 must be accompanied by a parent) Friday 4:30-5:30 ages: 7 to 15. Cost - $8 for members and $10 for non-members.

Road Rules • Ride on the right side of the road, with traffic, not against. Stay as far to the right as possible. • Use appropriate hand signals. • Respect traffic signals, stopping at all stop signs and stop lights. • Stop and look left, right and left again before entering a street or crossing an intersection. Look back and yield to traffic coming from behind before turning left. • Cycling should be restricted to sidewalks and paths until a child is age 10. • Children should not ride a bicycle when it’s dark, in the fog or in other low-visibility conditions. • If riding at dusk, dawn or in the evening is unavoidable, use a light on the bike and make sure it has reflectors as well.

Relieve some of that pressure by allowing them to get comfortable trying new sports at a young age, in a fun environment – with mom nearby of course. Kim’s Gym 4 Kids offers an introduction to sports and fitness with FUN and creative games and activities! Highlights include: • Pre-K P.E. classes in an air-conditioned gym • Rotating lessons include: Indoor Soccer and TBall, Basketball, Volleyball, Tennis, Golf, and more! • Bike Riding Lessons with a safety course! • Free trial classes • Classes taught by a certified health and P.E. instructor Call (910) 297-0179 for more information. Reuse, Recycle, Redecorate An eco-friendly transformation of the master bedroom

B

usy parents often neglect their own wishes due to the demands of daily life. In many cases, this means putting off decorating projects. My husband and I have lived in our home for 6 years and in that time have done nothing to create a cohesive bedroom. Everything in the room was functional, but some pieces and decorations were dated and didn’t really mesh well together.

Simple color changes along with the addition of upcycled furnishings and decorations transformed our bedroom from a disjointed place of slumber to a beautifully unified retreat. before

after

I decided that I would finally make some changes, but wanted to maintain my green living principles and also avoid spending a fortune. I enlisted the help of Patricia Battershill, lead instructor of CFCC’s interior design program, and her students. The students came up with some wonderful design ideas and suggestions for an updated space. We also worked with local craftsman, Paul Stavovy, to help design and build an eco-friendly headboard. Upcycling, reusing furnishings and utilizing green products helped pull off the bedroom transformation. Here is what we did:

Upcycling is the process of turning discarded items or materials into something new. The star of this process for the bedroom remodel is the headboard made of pallet wood. Pallets are primarily used for shipping all sorts of goods. Once discarded, the wood that makes up the pallets can be upcycled for another use. Stavovy used a simple design plan and constructed a sturdy headboard out of unwanted pallets. Other scrap wood, pages from old books and magazines and cardboard were also upcycled to create art for the room. In an effort to save money and avoid buying new materials, I wanted to reuse as many items as possible. Rearranging the existing furniture and giving it a new finish gave the room a fresh look. Drop cloths previously used for another project became curtains with some simple modifications. Searching secondhand stores and Craigslist helped me locate items like lamps and picture frames that we used to add personalized décor to the room. The use of environmentally friendly, safe products was of utmost importance. I did extensive research when determining which products to use. For stripping our furniture, I used a product by Franmar called Soy Gel Paint Stripper. Soy Gel is a soy-based paint remover that doesn’t contain unsafe petroleum-based products with toxic fumes. The results were fantastic and the product didn’t release any fumes. Once the furniture was stripped, I used a primer and paint made by Safecoat that utilizes a unique formula to help block toxic emissions. There was only a slight odor that was completely gone as soon as the product dried. For the walls, I chose a Benjamin Moore paint called Natura, a zero VOC product that is virtually odorless. It dried quickly and we were able to sleep in our bedroom the same night that we painted it. Simple color changes along with the addition of upcycled furnishings and decorations transformed our bedroom from a disjointed place of slumber to a beautifully unified retreat. To read more about the products used, the upcycled art projects, and to watch the video of our bedroom transformation, please visit www. wilmingtonparent.com. v Brandy Metzger is a freelance writer with a passion for green living. She is also a mother and a principal educator with STIZZil (an online education company).

Engineering Expectations

meet the expert | | advertorial

for STEM Success

If you ask kids, “What does it take to be an engineer?” they will probably tell you that you have to be very smart, especially in math and science. While it is true that scientific and mathematic skills are essential components of engineering, they are not sufficient by themselves – how engineers think is equally important. Engineers are analytical thinkers who rely on creativity and imagination to find innovative ways to approach problems and arrive at solutions. They are not afraid to think outside the box or try something new – even if it means failing a few times before they succeed. Engineers are tenacious. While it might be satisfying to solve a problem on the first try, where’s the fun in that? A hallmark of engineering is the design-redesign cycle. Engineers will design a solution to a problem, analyze the results, figure out how to improve it and redesign a new solution. And they will enjoy it! This description of an engineer – a creative problem solver who uses his or her imagination and technical skills to design solutions – is probably more appealing to a kid than the description of someone who is very smart, especially in math and science. By capitalizing on the creative design aspect, imaginative thinking and hands-on problem solving techniques, we can encourage more kids to try engineering. And we need more kids to try engineering. Maybe you’ve heard that there is a STEM crisis in this country? Nationally, only one in every 20 college graduates is an engineer. Last year, less than 18 percent of these engineering graduates were women and 7 percent were underrepresented minorities. If we can expose children to a realistic engineering experience – one that is creative, challenging and fun – at a young age, then perhaps more will be encouraged to pursue it as a course of study in college.

At UNCW, we offer opportunities for children and young teens to develop their own engineering expectations through our Saturday programs and summer academic enrichment camps. Creative problem solving and hands-on learning are the foundations of all our programs. Daily design projects challenge the young engineers to find creative solutions to interesting problems. We engage children as young as six with engineering by introducing them to some very clever construction critters in our Nature’s Engineers program. Kids between the ages of eight and 10 can join our Kid E. Corps of Engineers and develop their engineering design skills as they storm the castle, rocket to the moon and dive in the deep sea. For middle-school students, we offer discipline-specific camps that allow them to explore aerospace, civil and mechanical engineering. We also have programs that delve into engineering history and others that investigate futuristic robotics. And this summer, we will be hosting a leadership academy specifically designed for girls who might be interested in engineering. If you would like to know more about the UNCW Engineering Expectations program, please visit our website www.uncw.edu/youth/programs/ engineeringrobotics.html or call 910.962.2118.
