he holiday season is here! It seems like we were just enjoying lazy summer days, and now there are lights and decorations heralding in the season of cheer. For those who are already in the mad rush of organizing and planning for Thanksgiving meals, be sure to check out pg. 12 and pg. 36 of this month’s issue. The first article will keep you honest when it comes to not going overboard on your food intake. The second, well let’s just say we all need a little guidance when it comes to playing referee at the dinner table, and writer Heidi Smith Luedtke has some ideas to calm the fires of the family feud. Are you ready to start your Christmas shopping? I’ve always admired the people who are finished shopping by Halloween. I am a consistent last minute shopper. Definitely not something I recommend, as I tend to miss most of the best deals. For our readers however, we have a Holiday Shopping Guide that starts on pg. 13 that will guarantee you some unique gifts and amazing deals! Wilmington Parent magazine would like to invite everyone to make plans to attend the 1st Annual Family Expo on November 15 from 10am-4pm at The Schwartz Center. This event is going to be fun for the whole family! We have planned entertainment, vendors, demos, hands-on-activities for the kids, an inflatable bounce house and more! The best part of this exciting event, proceeds from the admission will benefit The Children’s Museum of Wilmington. I’m excited to see you all there!

short stuff

Get Ready For The Time Change Daylight Savings Time ends on November 2nd. Just when our bodies seem to have adjusted to the last time change, here we go again! Try these suggestions to help get yourself back on track sooner. • Start early - Reset one of your clocks at the start of the weekend, such as Friday night or Saturday morning. Try to eat meals, sleep, and wake according to that clock. When Monday comes, you’ll be on your way to feeling adjusted. • Exercise - Working out releases serotonin, a chemical in the brain that helps our bodies adjust. Exercise regularly, preferably outdoors, and early in the day. A brisk morning walk is perfect. Avoid exercising too late in the evening though, as this could interfere with the quality of your sleep. • Nap wisely - Try to resist the urge to take long naps late in the day. If you get tired, take a short, energizing walk around the block instead. If you must nap, keep it earlier in the day and limit your snooze time to no more than 20 minutes. • Lighten up - The right combination of light and dark can help your body’s circadian rhythm readjust so you can fall asleep on your new schedule and sleep more soundly. In the morning. Try to spend time outside during the day, if possible. Dim the lights in the evening, so that your body understands that it’s time to wind down.

Avoid Food Poisoning this Thanksgiving Make sure your guests enjoy the turkey without any illness related after effects. Food poisoning happens when food is not properly prepared. Here are some tips to avoid leaving your friends and family with bad turkey memories. Add turkey to the cart last. If you allow the turkey to approach room temperature, you risk bacteria growing. Safely thaw the turkey. One to two days before the big meal place your turkey in the fridge to thaw. Place on a tray to catch juices that may leak out to avoid contaminating other foods in the fridge. Never wash your turkey. Washing raw meat or poultry can spread bacteria around your sink and kitchen. Running water can splash off the turkey and contaminate surfaces up to three feet away. Don’t cook a partially frozen turkey. Make sure the turkey is thawed before you place it in the oven. If you put a frozen turkey in the oven, the inside won’t cook properly and the outside will burn. No more than 2 hours on the table. Don’t let your meat and other food sit out at the table for too long. Food that is left out for more than two hours may become contaminated and should be discarded. Giving Back During the Holidays During this time of Thanksgiving, we want to teach our children to reflect on all that we have and to show how grateful we are by helping others. Below are some local organizations where you and your family can spend time showing true thankfulness for all you have. Salvation Army - Our local Salvation Army runs 3 different stores and appreciates donations of lightly-worn clothing and a host of other goods. The sale of these items goes directly to fund community programming in the Cape Fear Region. If you are interested in giving your time, please contact their volunteer coordinator Kim Bell at kim.bell@uss.salvationarmy.org. Nourish NC - This wonderful organization collects food for children in our community. During the holidays, it can be very difficult for these children who are on vacation from school (and school meals). In the next 120 days, they want to add 91 more children to the NourishNC program. To do that, they have setup a store where you can purchase items directly for a child. They want to make donating more fun and meaningful by letting you choose what you’d like your money to go towards. Visit their online store at www.nourishnc.org to select a food item to purchase, add it to your cart, and feed a child in New Hanover County! Kids Care Clubs - Visit www.capefearvolunteercenter.org for more information about Kids Care Clubs. Kids Care Clubs provide opportunities for young people to engage in meaningful hands-on service as a way to teach caring and compassion, educate about various community issues, and inspire civic involvement at an early age and for a lifetime.

Great American Smokeout The Great American Smokeout is an informal holiday promoted by the American Cancer Society on the November 20th. Smokers are encouraged to make a plan to quit, even if for one day. Great American Smokeout Facts • The holiday began in 1970, when a man in Massachusetts asked people to give up smoking for one day, and donate the money saved to the local high school scholarship fund. • Smoking is responsible for 1 in 3 cancer-related deaths, and 1 in 5 deaths from any cause. Worldwide, tobacco use causes more than 5 million deaths per year. Life expectancy for smokers is 10 years less than that of non-smokers. What can you do? • If you are a smoker, call 1-800-QUIT-NOW for support in quitting. You can also get help from organizations like smokefree.govand ucanquit2.org.

910-795-2511 www.DrEggDental.com Mayfaire Town Center

Little mouths are a big deal.

• Organize a sporting event like soccer or softball as a way to have fun and otherwise help smokers take their minds off of smoking.

• Talk to someone you know who smokes and challenge them to quit for the day.

• Give out sugarless gum to otherwise smokers as friendly gesture to promote an alternative.

Glen Meade Center for Women’s Health - NHRMC Physician Group’s dr. Robison Earns Certification In Urogynecology Sub-Specialty G. Daniel Robison, IV, MD, FACOG, FPMRS of Glen Meade Center for Women’s Health NHRMC Physician Group has earned certification in the sub-specialty of female pelvic medicine and reconstructive surgery (FPMRS), also known as urogynecology. In September 2014, Dr. Robison joined his partner Timothy Chase, MD, FACOG, FPMRS, in offering the women of

southeastern North Carolina this advanced level of care. Jointly administered by the American Board of Urology and the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ABOG), FPMRS is a sub-specialty certification focusing on the diagnosis, management, treatment, prevention and promotion

Dr. Robison is also a co-founder and director of Glen Meade Incontinence Center and Glen Meade Center for Robotic Surgery, and is recognized as a local pioneer in the use of the da Vinci Robotic Surgical System. He teaches other surgeons the latest techniques for minimally invasive gynecological surgeries, including how to perform hysterectomies using the da Vinci robot. “The specialty of urogynecology is expected to grow as women understand they do not have to suffer with these symptoms,” said Dr. Robison. One in four American women has issues with at least one pelvic floor disorder, he said, “but they haven’t always been forthright in discussing them with their doctor. Fortunately that is changing as options for treatment continue to advance and become known.”

Training Wheels for New Cellphone Users

f your child is one of the lucky kids getting a new cellphone during the holidays, now is the time to think about the rules that should go along with it. Kids need to understand from the get-go that having a phone is a privilege, and, like all privileges, it comes with responsibilities. Family contracts that outline those responsibilities are available from several reliable sources including Connect Safely (www.connectsafely.org/ family-contract-smartphone-use/) and Sprint (www.sprint. com/4netsafety/phoneContract-feature.html). Even if you don’t feel the need to sign a formal contract with your child, these documents cover important talking points. Being clear about expectations is step one, but many children also benefit from a little extra structure. Fortunately, parents have access to a wide range of technical tools that will help children remember and respect their rules. The checklist that follows provides an overview of protections that are available for cellphones.

the Internet, so you may want filters that block access to pornography, gambling, hate speech and other content for adults.

Supervise social media. A cellphone makes it all too easy to share impulsive messages, photos and video. Parents can arrange to be notified whenever a child posts or is tagged on social media. Or you can set up controls that alert you only if your child uses unacceptable language, is involved in bullying or exchanges inappropriate photos. Manage time. If the phone seems to be taking over a child’s life, most carriers offer a timer that will allow you to establish intervals when the phone simply doesn’t work because your child should be sleeping or paying attention in class.

Track location. If your child struggles to keep track of personal items, you may want an app that will locate the phone if it’s lost. Some parents also use GPS to confirm that kids are where they are supposed to be— home after school, on the soccer field, at a sleepover.

It’s unlikely that most parents will want or need all of these tools. The features that make sense for your family depend partly on your parenting style and partly on your child’s temperament. In addition to age and maturity, you’ll want to think about the following questions: Is your child able to keep track of belongings? Does he or she generally follow household rules? How easily is your child distracted? How susceptible is he to pressure from peers or strangers? Most important, how will this tool help you reach your ultimate goal--having a child who makes good, independent decisions about how and when to use a cellphone?

Limit downloads. Kids with smartphones will want to explore the wonderful world of apps. Some apps simply aren’t suitable for children. Some cost money that will show up on your phone bill. Some introduce malware onto the phone. If you have any doubts about your child’s judgment, look for software that will alert you when your child tries to download a ringtone, game, or social media app.

Once you’ve decided which protections you want, find out whether they are available from your phone carrier. All major companies offer some of these services free and others for a monthly fee. To figure out what’s available on your plan, search for parental controls on their website. Better yet, visit one of their outlets and have someone describe and demonstrate the relevant features so you’ll actually be able to use them.

Most families find they can protect their children adequately with services provided by cellphone companies, supplemented perhaps by free apps like MamaBear. If you decide to invest in more comprehensive software, detailed reviews of ten options are available at cell-phone-parentalcontrol-software-review.toptenreviews.com.

Curb Phone Calls. For very young children, it’s often a good idea to establish an approved list of phone numbers so your child can make and receive calls only from those people. For older kids, you may still want software that shows traffic on the phone. Remember that specific numbers can always be blocked if your child is being harassed or unduly influenced by peers or strangers.

Control texts. Depending on your family’s plan and your child’s self control, you may want controls that limit the number of texts your child can send and/or receive. Some controls also allow parents to monitor texts for content that seems risky. There’s even an app, Ignore No More, that lets you lock the phone if you don’t get a prompt response to your text messages!

Disable while driving. If your child is old enough to drive, consider using a feature that disables the phone whenever it’s moving at the speed of a car.

Some of these programs brag about how they can be used in “stealth” mode so kids will never even know their parents are watching them. In many ways, that kind of spyware subverts the goals of good parenting. If you do find something worrisome, you won’t be able to discuss it without admitting that you’ve had your child’s phone under surveillance. Better to talk openly about what safeguards you plan to use and why you think they are important. Being upfront about your concerns actually makes it more likely that your kids will become such savvy, skilled and responsible cellphone users that they won’t need training wheels any more. v Carolyn Jabs, M.A., raised three computer savvy kids including one with special needs. She has been writing Growing Up Online for ten years and is working on a book about constructive responses to conflict. Visit www.growing-up-online.com to read other columns.

Adult Onset Asthma By Danielle Villegas

M

any people develop asthma in childhood. However, asthma symptoms can appear at any time in life. Individuals who develop asthma as adults are said to have adult onset asthma.

Adult onset asthma may or may not be caused by allergies. Some individuals who had allergies as children or young adults with no asthma symptoms could develop asthma as older adults. Other times, adults become sensitized to everyday substances found in their homes or food and suddenly begin to experience asthma symptoms.

• Women going through menopause can develop asthma symptoms for the first time. • Different illnesses, viruses or infections can be a factor in adult onset asthma. Many adults first experience asthma symptoms after a bad cold or a bout with the flu. Signs and Symptoms of Adult Onset Asthma. • Asthma symptoms can include:

Who Gets Adult Onset Asthma?

• Dry cough, especially at night or in response to specific “triggers”

• Several factors may make a person more likely to get adult onset asthma.

• Tightness or pressure in the chest

• Women are more likely to develop asthma after age 20.

• Wheezing—a whistling sound—when exhaling

• Obesity appears to significantly increase the risk of developing asthma as an adult.

• Shortness of breath after exercise

• At least 30 percent of adult asthma cases are triggered by allergies.

• Difficulty breathing

• Colds that go to the chest or “hang on” for 10 days or more

• Prolonged exposure to certain workplace materials may set off asthma symptoms in adults.

How can Asthma Symptoms be Controlled or Reduced? Make an asthma management plan with your healthcare provider. If your asthma symptoms are caused by allergies, take steps to control known or potential triggers in your environment. Allergy-proof your house for dust, mold, cockroaches and other common indoor allergens to which you are allergic. Reduce your outdoor activities when pollen counts or ozone levels are high. Choose foods that don’t contribute to your asthma or allergy symptoms. Evaluate your workplace for possible allergens and take the necessary steps to reduce your exposure to them. v

• Some women first develop asthma symptoms during or after a pregnancy.

Source: www.aafa.org; asthmaandallergies.org

• People allergic to cats may have an increased risk for developing adult onset asthma. • Exposure to cigarette smoke, mold, dust, feather bedding, perfume or other substances commonly found in the person’s environment may trigger the first asthma symptoms.

Party Healthy This Season

D

By Sandra Gordon

uring the holidays, food isn’t just food. It’s a delicious experience loaded with tradition and temptation. But if you’re not careful, in the five weeks between Thanksgiving and New Year’s, the indulgent delights of stuffing, mashed potatoes, pumpkin pie and eggnog can become the harsh reality of extra pounds. Still, the holidays don’t have to be a big issue. To survive the season and beyond with your waistline intact, party healthy, not hearty. The key is developing strategies that keep your portions—and your appetite— under control. These temptation-taming tactics can help.

with fruit juice or diet soda. Hold off on the hors d’oeuvres and cocktails for a while and mingle without anything. The longer you put off eating and drinking alcohol, the less time you’ll have to overindulge. To avoid feeling deprived and pressured to partake, pour your seltzer, juice spritzer or diet soda in a wine glass. If others offer you food or pressure you to indulge, avoid saying: “No thank you. I’m watching my weight.” That will draw you into uncomfortable conversations about why you really shouldn’t be a party pooper. A better idea: Repeat this comeback: “Not just yet. I’m going to wait a little while.

Have a Game Plan. Never arrive at your celebration starving, or you’ll

Limit Your Choices. At holiday parties with an appetizer or buffet spread, “Follow the rule of two,” says Brian Wansink, Ph.D., director of the food and brand lab at Cornell University and author ofSlim by Design. That is, don’t put more than two foods on your plate at any given time. By doing so, “you’ll intuitively limit your choices, while focusing on your favorite foods so you don’t feel deprived,” he says. At sit-down dinners, use a different strategy: Go ahead and fill threequarters of your plate with healthy, lower-calorie options, such as salads, grain dishes and vegetables, and reserve the remaining quarter of your plate for anything you want, whether or not it’s low calorie. Then savor each and every bite.

overeat. Instead, have a piece of fruit, a small salad or a cup of low-fat yogurt before leaving home. A solid snack will keep you from pouncing on the bowl of nuts or potato chips as soon as you arrive.

Cook in Your Skinny Jeans. If you’re doing the cooking for the party, slip into something less comfortable while you’re working away in the kitchen. Tight clothing will help you stay aware of your waistline and curb the urge to nibble. If you’re wearing an apron, tie it snugly.

Prevent a Test Fest. If you’re preparing a dish you’ve never made before, go ahead and taste along the way. But use a teaspoon and sip water frequently to cleanse your palate. If you’re making a repeat recipe, there’s no need to taste test. Pop in a stick of gum to curb the urge to nibble. Use Delay Tactics. When you arrive at a party or family gathering and it’s time for drinks and appetizers, have a glass of seltzer, seltzer mixed

Stash Leftovers Out of Sight. Once your holiday dinner is over, store leftover turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes and the like in opaque containers. The mere sight of food can stimulate your appetite and cue you to eat when you didn’t plan to. By hiding food in plain sight, you won’t be constantly tempted every time you open the refrigerator. v

All Aboard for Fun and Learning By Sarah Yale

N

ovember is National Model Railroad Month, so now is a great time to visit Wilmington Railroad Museum. Upcoming holiday events feature colorful seasonal model railroads with 20,000 twinkling lights, visits with Santa and holiday treats. This beautifully decorated museum is ready to amaze visitors of all ages, but holiday brilliance is just one of the many reasons to visit this downtown destination. Children can learn so much from a visit to the Railroad Museum. Expansive model railways recreate history and illuminate daily life in different time periods. Trains and railroads played a major part in shaping our country starting in the 1800’s. Wilmington was a very different place when we had our very own railroad line and train station. The Atlantic Coast Line Railroad was in operation from 1830-1930 and formed a single unified system between the North and the South. Visiting the museum and learning about our local history, encourages enthusiasm for trains and can be further developed by joining a model railroad club, reading stories and non-fiction books about trains, watching movies, setting up a toy railroad, building a model railway, going to train collector shows, and reading train magazines. Kids will also learn about geography, STEM (science, technology, engineering, math), and so much more. Interesting hobbies can lead to a lifetime of learning.

Upcoming Events Train & Light Spectacular Fridays & Saturdays, Nov. 28, 29, Dec. 5, 6, 12, 13, 19, 20, 26, 27 This evening walk-through show runs from 6:30-8pm. and features a visit with Santa plus cider and cookies afterward. $5 admission, under age 2 is free. Polar Express Family Shows Saturdays & Sundays, Dec. 6, 13, 14, 20, 21 Prepaid reservation required due to the popularity of this show. Hear the holiday story read by a local TV personality, visit with Santa, get a special “first gift”, and warm cocoa afterward. Shows are at 4:30 &5:30. $5 admission, under age 2 is free. Call 753-2634 to reserve a spot.

Train Trivia 1. Trains are more environmentally friendly when compared to many other forms of travel. 2. The actual contact area between the steel train wheels and the steel track is about the size of a dime, thus there is very little resistance, making trains an efficient way to transport heavy goods. 3. Freight trains carry 40% of the world’s cargo. 4. The Seikan Tunnel in Japan is the longest train tunnel in the world. It is 33.46 miles in length. 5. The French TGV bullet train holds the speed record of 574km per hour (357 miles per hour). It braked for 16 kilometers (9 miles) to come to a stop. v Sarah Yale is a freelance writer and the mother of two children who love model railroading and vintage trains.

2014 NHC Bond Referendum for Education Voters in New Hanover County will answer the question, “What kind of facilities do we want for our children?” when they cast their vote on Tuesday, November 4, and decide whether the county may use $160 million in bond funding to pay for a new school, replace two schools, renovate various schools, technology updates at all schools, as well as safety and security improvements at all schools. Residents of New Hanover County may vote if they are 18 years of age or older by the day of election, and have registered to vote at least 25 days prior to the election. How will passing the bond affect your taxes? In order to finance these top 14 projects, the New Hanover County Board of Commissioners will hold a referendum on November 4th to get permission from the voters to sell $160 million in bonds. The bond would be repaid over a 20-year period with an average increase of three cents on the property tax rate. To put this in perspective, the tax bill on a $200,000 home would increase approximately $60 per year, or $5 per month. If the bond doesn’t pass: Teachers will continue to teach and students will continue to learn in outdated facilities that are not conducive to learning; building system and infrastructure will continue to deteriorate; and the School System will have to look for other ways to deal with a growing student population. These may include redistricting more frequently, more mobile units, and consideration of split schedules or multi-track year round calendars. To read more about the projects, their cost, the proposed schedule, and other frequently asked questions, visit www.nhcs.net/bond

Get in the Game with School Lunch To recognize the National School Lunch Program and the 30 million children it serves every day, New Hanover County Schools recognized National School Lunch Week from October 13-17, 2014. The theme, “Get in the Game with School Lunch” featured events and activities that promote the importance of balancing healthy eating with physical activity and exercise. National School Lunch Week emphasized healthy foods that are offered daily at New Hanover County Schools. Several schools had sport team members visit during lunch times and offer promotions to students encouraging them to eat healthy and stay active. “School lunches are healthier than ever, with more fruits and vegetables, more whole grains, and less fat and sodium” said Imer Smith RD, LDN , Director of Child Nutrition. “National School Lunch Week is the perfect time to celebrate all of the healthy options we’re serving every day in New Hanover County Schools and also promote students to stay active. You have to have both working together to make a healthy lifestyle”. The “Get in the Game with School Lunch” campaign was sponsored by the non-profit School Nutrition Association and Chobani Greek Yogurt. For more information about NHCS school meals, visit www.nhcs.net/nutrition.

“Focus…Aim…Release!” Roland-Grise Receives $500 Grant to Fund New Archery Program Roland-Grise Middle School received a $500 grant from the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission (NCWRC) to bring an archery program to the school. The grant money funded staff training and equipment costs. Archery is a highly engaging activity that helps students to develop micro and macro motor ability, in addition to listening and observation skills. Chris Kent, NC Wildlife Commission Hunter Education Specialist, led the National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP) archery training, with assistance from retired Hoggard NJROTC instructor, David Miller. The target archery training team includes Pamela Mitchell, John Calarco, John Beall, and Gary Francisco. Coach Pamela Mitchell and Assistant Principal Chris Vaughan worked on the grant proposal to bring the archery opportunity to Roland-Grise. Source: www.nhcs.net

Make Wilmington Pediatric Dentistry Your Child’s Dental Home

A

t Wilmington Pediatric Dentistry, Dr. Skip Tyson, Dr. Stephanie Heaney and their entire team embrace the concept of the Dental Home. Patients and their families are a part of our family. We enjoy building long lasting relationships with our patients over the years. It is recommended that children have their first dental visit at the age of one. That establishes a “dental home,” where an individualized and specific dental prevention plan can be tailored to your child, based on their dental needs as they grow. It also gives parents a much needed voice to turn to if your child ever suffers dental trauma or if you happen to have a simple question about a loose baby tooth or newly erupting permanent tooth. Most importantly, it provides a warm, inviting, familiar and fun environment for your child’s dental care so they will LOVE coming. Our main office area is designed for young children and their parents. The waiting room is decked out with a surf shack to enjoy while waiting for their own appointment or for their siblings. We have a toddler room for our youngest patients to be seen on their parent’s lap. There is a playroom perfectly equipped with “portholes” for parents to view their child or for children to watch each other. It is stocked with age appropriate video games, books and toys. And to top the visit off, there is always a visit to our treasure chest for prizes.

www.wilmingtonparent.com

After almost 2 decades in Wilmington, Wilmington Pediatric Dentistry has done something to create even more “wow factor” for the children of our area. The opening of the “Teen Zone”, a truly ground breaking idea, has been designed to keep dentistry fun for their pre-teen and teenage patients. Located in the same building as our main office, the “Teen Zone” is a state of the art spot that teens will know was designed just for them as they grow up. “Middle and High School patients have different issues than our younger patients”, says Dr. Skip. “The Teen Zone focuses on the specific changes that our older patients will be faced with, such as changes in their dietary and oral hygiene routines.” Dr. Steph mentions, “It is also focused on keeping dentistry on their radar, hopefully building adults that value their oral health and understand the power of prevention,” she says. So, no matter if your child is 4 or 14, Wilmington Pediatric Dentistry’s motto always rings true: Brush, Floss, Drink Water! Now accepting new patients. Please call the office to schedule an appointment at 910-791-7380. Please visit our facebook page (Wilmington Pediatric Dentistry-Dr. Skip and Dr. Stephanie) or website at www.catchasmile.net.

Holiday Family Feud? Not This Year

(Respond with a Smile and Pass the Peas) By Heidi Smith Luedtke, Ph.D.

S

ome of the happiest times in our lives – like weddings and babies’ birthdays – are shared with extended family members. But during the holiday season, even the closest families can experience friction.

If you’re stressed out because your mother-in-law can’t say anything good about your cooking or you’re dreading a political debate with Uncle Bob, take heart. You don’t have to take a tropical vacation to avoid unpleasant interactions. With some strategic planning and a handful of ready, tactful responses, your holiday celebration can be more enjoyable for everyone.

Step 1: Identify the Issues Let’s be honest. The topics that can turn a joyous family dinner into a war of words are not a big secret to anyone. You already know which individuals and issues are likely to lead to trouble. Make a list of possible triggers so you can decide how to handle them. Discussions of money, religion and politics often lead to arguments. Health and relationship issues – such as addictions, affairs or divorces – can also cause conflict. It’s perfectly fine to announce to everyone that certain topics are off limits for this occasion. Remind everyone that you want to keep family celebrations festive and ask them to avoid sticky subjects for the good of the group.

Step 2: Invite Everyone When it comes to the guest list, experts say it is best to be inclusive. Leaving someone out can hurt the feelings of that individual and other relatives. Your parents and your in-laws will want to spend special time with their kids and grandkids. Do your best to give everyone equal face time. If a single get-together won’t work, hold separate events on different days or alternate holidays each year, so everyone has a chance to connect. Bad feelings fester if one side of the family always gets second-class status.

Step 3: Keep Them Busy After making the invites, arrange for activities to keep people busy and focused. Have craft supplies on hand to give kids (and grownups) a con-

structive way to express themselves. Family members might make their own place cards, write holiday haiku, or paint gift boxes or ornaments. Outdoor activities, like a walk in a nearby park or a game of flag football, also channel social energy in healthy directions. Another bonus: Planned activities give distant relatives a fun way to get acquainted.

Step 4: Take a Team Approach On the day of the event, use place cards to keep would-be opponents where you want them – at opposite ends of the table. Enlist help from family peacekeepers if you’re still concerned things could get out of hand. “If Uncle Marty tends to be offensive, seat him next to someone who knows how to put a lid on him. You will feel more relaxed knowing others are ready to step in.

Step 5: Seek Peace Even smart planning can’t prevent every problem. Laugh off out-ofhand comments if possible. When your Dad takes a jab at your brother’s job, say, “We knew we could count on you to say that, Dad!” and move on to other ideas. Address tough issues another time. During holiday celebrations, shift the conversation onto lighter subjects. Say, “Now’s not the time to tackle that topic. Who is ready for pie?” Direct fire – on you or another family member – can be hard to dismiss. When your skinny sister asks your overweight aunt, “Do you really think you should eat all that?!” you can’t just make a joke of it. Buffer the comment by telling your aunt, “Mary, don’t listen to her. You’re lovely just the way you are”. Then change the subject. You may feel especially vulnerable during the holidays and it is okay to “put some boundaries around yourself. Be polite, but stick to impersonal topics. This sends a subtle stand-down signal to others and keeps you from getting dragged into family drama. Take a walk outside when togetherness gets overwhelming. You’ll be better able to appreciate all the members of your crazy clan when you’ve had a breath of fresh air. v
