Test Planning Strategies School is back in session! From Kindergarten on up students will begin testing their knowledge on spelling words, science terms, and math concepts. Of course, we all know that not every child is a natural test taker. To avoid test stress, planning is key. Try this 3-Day Study Plan to help your child learn study skills and encourage them to avoid procrastination. • Three days before the test: Have your child reread the key textbook chapters and her class notes. • Two days before: Ask your child to recite key points out loud -- to you, a sibling, or even a favorite toy -- without looking at her notes or in her textbook.
Take a Child Outside Week
• The day before: If the teacher provided a practice test or an online study guide, your child should complete it now. On the questions she misses, have her reread key points in the text or her notes.
September 24 - 30 is Take A Child Outside Week. This program is designed to help break down obstacles that keep children from discovering the natural world. The goal is to help children develop a better understanding and appreciation of the environment in which they live, and a burgeoning enthusiasm for its exploration.
• The day of the test: Encourage her to skim her notes over breakfast in the morning. If she’s anxious, skip the last-minute studying and help her relax with deep breaths or tension-breaking jumping jacks. A “good luck” note in her backpack is always a nice touch.
Going outside: • connects children to the natural world • helps kids focus in school • reduces chances of obesity
• The evening after the test: Create a “You did it!” tradition. The evening after a big test, go for a bike ride or let him stay up an extra 30 minutes at bed-time -- whatever he considers a treat. This should have nothing to do with the grade. It’s just a congrats for making it through a tough task, and giving him a positive feeling about future tests.
Visit www.takeachildoutside.org to plan your week: • pledge to take a child outside and record your outdoor experiences get ideas for outdoor activities • find participating organizations all over North Carolina on an interactive map Many locations around town including Carolina Beach State Park and Fort Fisher have activities planned for this important week. Come, be a part of this national movement! For more information or to offer financial support, contact Liz Baird, Director of Education, at (919) 707-9893.

Helping Kids Get Enough Sleep in a 24/7 World
F
or growing children, adequate sleep is every bit as important as nutritious food and daily exercise. Yet, ever since Edison flipped on the first electric light, experts have been worrying about whether any of us are getting enough sleep. Now researchers are warning that online amusements, especially social media, are sabotaging sleep. Not long ago, the New York Times ran an anxious story about adolescents who “vamp,” staying up all night and using cellphones to surf, text, tweet, play games and binge-watch their favorite shows. Apparently, some teens even text in their sleep, sending messages they don’t remember the next day. The best way to counteract these trends is to teach good sleep habits when kids are little and parents are firmly in control. Throughout elementary school, it’s a good idea to establish a clear bedtime by counting backward 10-11 hours from when a child needs to be up in the morning. (For current research about how much sleep kids need, visit www.parentingscience.com/sleep-requirements.html). To help kids fall asleep, guide them toward a predictable, self-soothing routine. A warm bath. Getting things organized for the day ahead. Low lights. Soft music. A bit of reading. A snuggle with a stuffed animal. The specific ingredients may vary depending on your child’s age and temperament, but experts point out that learning to do something consistent in preparation for sleep has lifelong benefits. In middle school, children grow rapidly, so they still need more sleep— and less social media—than they think they do. Sleep experts recommend that bedrooms be tech-free zones—no cellphones, video games or televisions. Period. Get an old-fashioned alarm clock, and insist that all devices observe a curfew in a room you can supervise. Make it a goal for everyone in the family to get an hour of tech-free time before bed. By high school, most kids will challenge these rules, so parents need new strategies. The most effective is to talk to teens about how plenty of sleep at night makes them happier during the day. The goal is to help kids develop a genuine appreciation for the benefits of sleep so they will make healthy decisions even when you aren’t around. Here are some points worth making:
How Much is Enough. Rather than arguing about how much sleep he or she needs, make your teen responsible for behaviors associated with being well-rested. Can your child get up at the right time in the morning and do what needs to be done without nagging from you? Can he or she stay awake and pay attention at school? Is your teen able to get through most days without being hostile, grouchy or irritable—all common side effects of fatigue? Explain to your child that when the answer to all these questions is yes, you can back off about bedtime. If you see slippage in schedules, grades or moods, you’ll need to reassert control. 8 | September 2014 | Wilmington Parent
The Risks of Too Little. Teens need to know about research showing that too little sleep has consequences for physical and mental health. In addition to the negative effects on mood and attention, sleep deprivation is also associated with higher blood pressure and an increase in stress hormones. Teens may also be interested to know that some researchers have connected too little sleep to increased feelings of hunger, which may lead to weight gain.
Online Seductions. Teens aren’t going to want to hear this, but sleep experts are convinced that being online before bedtime makes it harder to fall asleep. For one thing, light is a stimulant that interferes with the sleep cycle. In addition, many online pastimes—competitive games, social media “drama,” provocative programs—activate emotions that thwart sleep. If your teen resists the idea of disconnecting at bedtime, talk about what’s going on. Some teens whose lives are heavily scheduled feel that their only unstructured time occurs after “lights out.” Others experience FOMO (fear of missing out) whenever they are offline. Understanding why your teen wants a phone under the pillow may help you work together to establish better boundaries and balance. Becoming Self Aware. Teens are more likely to make sleep a priority when they are aware of their own patterns, so encourage your child to keep a sleep diary. What time did he or she get into bed? How long did it take to fall asleep? What was happening immediately before bedtime? Did he or she wake up spontaneously (a sign that sleep was adequate)? When was your child tired during the day? Did he or she take a nap in the afternoon? How long? Did he or she wake up refreshed or groggy? Doing this for a week or two may help your teen make the connection between better sleep and better performance during the day. Finally, remember that children who lead full and complicated lives may need help with the kind of off-line relaxation that leads to restorative sleep. Depending on your family’s values, you may want to encourage your child to pray, count blessings, meditate, keep a gratitude journal, focus on deep breathing or write down problems so they can be set aside. All of these are time-tested strategies for stepping away from the pressures of a 24/7 world and finding peace at the end of the day. v Carolyn Jabs, M.A., raised three computer savvy kids including one with special needs. She has been writing Growing Up Online for ten years and is working on a book about constructive responses to conflict. Visit www.growing-uponline.com to read other columns

Raising Healthy Families By Dr. Sonya Young
W
e are in an era when so many factors are changing and contributing to our rising health concerns in the United States. This is the first generation of kids that are NOT expected to outlive their parents! Kids with adult conditions have increased more in the past decade than ever before. Among 200 children autopsied after being involved in fatal accidents, they found children between the ages of 2-15 years with plaquing in their coronary arteries in over 10% of cases. Between 16-20 years old, over 35% had plaquing in arteries and above 20, over 70% plaquing in their arteries. This is the single number one cause of heart disease, heart attacks and poor health. (New England Journal of Medicine)
WHAT CAN YOU DO?: Healthy Kids = Healthy Adults. It has to begin with the parents, just like flying on an airplane, we have got to put the masks over our own mouths first before helping your children. Nutrition: One easy step is to replace bad FATS with good FATS. Rancid, bad fats are: vegetable oil, canola oil, corn oil, margarine, synthetic butters. Healthy Good Fats are: EV olive oil, coconut oil, avocado, grape seed oil, raw nuts and seeds, raw and real butter, raw cheese and yogurt, grass fed beef, wild caught fish. Sugar: is hidden in everything. Juices, processed foods, snacks just to name a few. Reduce sugary foods and replace with fresh fruits, and natural food. Instead of fast food which equates to not real health, think about picking up a rotisserie chicken and fresh cut up veggies and fruits, which are just as fast and easy on the go. Instead of McD’s how about Moes and Zoes where they use fresh most natural sources of protein, some organic fresh vegetables.

Exercise optimizes brain function and learning. Exercise promotes the growth of new nerve cells. On a system level, it increases attention, motivation and self-esteem. On a cellular level, exercise links nerve cells together and healthy firing, as well as neurogenesis, promotes new cell growth and increases synaptic clefts in the cerebellum. Regular exercise also relieves depression. Researchers assigned 156 patients over the age of 50 who suffered from major depressive disorder to one of three treatments: Drugs (Zoloft), exercise and drugs, and exercise three times a week for a total of 45 minutes. Researchers found the patients in the exercise group were more likely to continue to be partially or fully recovered than those in the medication groups. In addition, researchers have found exercise massively decreases your risk of senility, dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. Promote healthy exercise and regular oxygenation 3-4 times per week for 30-45 minute intervals. By making a few healthy lifestyle shifts for you and your family, you can achieve more optimum health, and rewrite the statistics on heart disease, cancers and obesity. With a maximized mindset, just shifting your belief systems, making awareness around the wealth of knowledge, keeping a healthy spine and nervous system, increasing quality nutrition, increasing exercise and lean muscle tissue, and minimizing your toxins, you are improving daily on the road to true health! v Dr. Sonya Young, Elite Chiropractic and Maximized Living. DHA for Developing Brains The essential fatty acid DHA is critical for the development and function of the brain. A wide range of studies have shown that because children’s brains are still developing, fish oil can actually raise the I.Q. of children. Studies have also shown improved neurological function including mood and focus, which we all know is crucial to anyone’s success. Not surprisingly, all the benefits that adults receive from fish oils apply to children as well: lower cholesterol, blood pressure, healthier skin, nails, hair, and cardiovascular health. If you’re wondering if you should just feed your child more fish, you should know that studies show that while greater fish consumption was related to greater cognitive function, elevated mercury levels were associated with lower test scores. Based on these results (and many studies like it), actual fish consumption (or cheap fish oil supplements) is clearly an unhealthy choice due to contaminants and heavy metals. Most experts recommend highly purified, pharmaceutical grade supplementation. The lowest DHA dosage showing a cognitive benefit is 100mg per day. This is one small and extremely powerful investment you need to add to your Back to School list. Becky Woodske PICP I & II Strength Coach, BioSignature Specialist
Track Your Trails and Win Prizes Kids in Parks is an expanding network of family-friendly outdoor adventures called TRACK Trails. Each TRACK Trail features self-guided brochures and signs that turn your visit into a fun and exciting outdoors experience. Best of all, you can earn prizes for tracking your adventures! TRACK trails are popular in the western part of the state, but now they are spreading east. The state parks system recently opened its 17th, 18th and 19th TRACK trails at Eno River, Lumber River and Singletary Lake state parks. The goal is to open at least 30 within the next few years. The TRACK trails and the Kids in Parks program were launched in 2009 by the Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation. Their mission is to lure young children outdoors with the promise of adventure on self-guided hikes with parents and other adults. The trails are easy and short with colorful signs and brochures. The program also has an online component, where children can log their adventures and earn prizes The Kids in Parks Website also prepares kids for a lifetime of hiking, with tips on planning for a hike, dressing properly, packing the necessities and choosing the right trail. Coconut Cranberry Crockpot Quinoa This is a great breakfast for those busy school mornings! Quinoa is a terrific food to add to your families diet. Quinoa is perfect for kids because it is: • Easily digestible (for those little sensitive tummies) • Low on the glycemic index (minimizes wild swings in blood sugars) • Full of minerals and amino acids • Rich source of folate! (which is more easily absorbed than the synthetic: folic acid) Ingredients: • coconut water • quinoa • dried cranberries • honey • vanilla • sliced almonds and coconut Toss it in the crockpot on low right before you go to bed. Warm and healthy breakfast is ready to go! If you don’t want to let this sit all night, put all the ingredients in a pressure cooker for 12 minutes in the morning. Comes out fluffier too! Tip for better tasting Quinoa: Soak and rinse your quinoa before cooking to remove that bitter taste. Even if it says “pre-rinsed”. Use a mesh lined strainer to not lose the seeds. t’s no secret that buying in bulk and clipping coupons can save a ton of money. But if you’re looking for additional ways to pinch more than pennies, consider these unconventional options.
Use Coupons to Earn Money Did you know that you can get paid just to use coupons? At www.inboxdollars.com, you can earn 10 cents for each of their coupons you use. Create a free account and then follow the “Deals” tab to a collection of coupons you can select and print. When you use those coupons at your local stores, earnings are automatically noted in your InboxDollars member’s account. Once $30 has accumulated, request payment and a check will be mailed to you.
Get Paid to Buy Food Upload your weekly grocery store receipts at www.checkout51.com to earn cash back on certain items. Depending on the week, you can usually earn between 25 cents and two dollars per item. Typical cash back products listed on Checkout 51’s website include a loaf of sliced bread (50 cents cash back), cucumbers (25 cents) and name-brand or storespecific items such as Scrubbing Bubbles bathroom products ($1) and Whole Foods Crystal Lake Farms Chicken ($2). When your free Checkout 51 account reaches $20, cash out and get your check.
Ask for Hidden Discounts Making simple requests throughout your shopping trip could reveal unadvertised discounts that save you a significant amount over the course of a month. For example, if you’re buying deli meat that will be used within a few days, ask the deli counter employee if they have any meat near its expiration date that’s available at a discounted rate. Also, some cashiers have unused coupons at their station. When checking out, ask if there are any additional discounts or coupons they can offer. There’s a good chance there are. Speaking of requests: if you want to buy a sale item that’s out of stock, don’t forget to ask for a rain check at the customer service desk so that you can save on a future bill. Many stores will automatically write a rain check for one single item. If you’d like to buy more than one at the sale price, ask if they can write out the rain check for two or more. Many stores will write a rain check for up to four. Try out one or more of these uncommon options, and the savings may surprise you. When Moms go Back to School
U
By Dr. Gayla Grace
nhappy in a job with limited potential, I opted to return to school for a master’s degree as I approached my 40th birthday. I began searching for options in other fields of study, determined to work a schedule other than eight to five with four kids at home. My current employer offered tuition reimbursement, which provided an additional incentive. So, despite my fears and uncertainties, I plunged into a master’s degree that I’m thankful today offers me a wide range of possibilities. Returning to school as an adult requires serious consideration. When raising a family at the same time and/or working full-time, it means personal sacrifice and strict time management. However, it can bring greater job security and satisfaction, in addition to access to skills of higher demand or personal interest classes for individual enrichment.
Why? There are many possibilities to consider when returning to school. The question of “Why?” needs to be answered first. Are you looking for a career change that requires a long-term commitment? Do you hope to increase your marketability with current career-related courses? Or do you want to acquire a new skill through a continuing education course? Regardless of the reason, having a clear goal before returning to school will help determine your direction and how much time and energy you need to invest.
Costs Another consideration of higher education centers on tuition costs. Finishing an undergraduate degree or diving into a graduate degree can be expensive. Tuition reimbursement plans and low-interest loans can play a role in helping with expenses. It’s important to have a financial plan to avoid setbacks that might prevent you from reaching your goal.
Scheduling What changes do you need to make in your schedule to accommodate classes and studying? Will your current employer allow time off for classes? Do you need to secure babysitting for your children? Do you have
24 | September 2014 | Wilmington Parent
volunteer duties you can delegate to someone else for awhile? Prioritizing your responsibilities allows a smoother transition with your new schedule.
Support It’s also important to keep your family in mind and seek their support for your decision. When I returned to school, I had class one night a week and I asked our oldest daughter to be responsible for the meal that night. The other children helped with clean up and after-dinner chores. It enabled our household to continue to run smoothly and enjoy a homecooked meal without me.
Be Flexible Returning to school may require flexibility with your schedule due to unexpected happenings in your personal life. An aging parent with a sudden illness or a child in need of extra time and attention may slow the progress of classes. While completing my degree my husband’s job was transferred, which prompted an out-of-state move before I finished. Then I learned I was pregnant (unexpectedly) with our youngest child. It seemed impossible that I could complete my schooling, but I searched several options before giving up. I consulted with a school in our new location and learned I could take my last two classes after we moved, transferring the credits back to my current school to complete my coursework. I couldn’t travel to the graduation ceremonies at eight months pregnant, but I beamed with pride as I received my diploma through the mail upon completion! Perseverance toward your goal, despite unexpected circumstances, will lead to accomplishing what you set out to do. Returning to school as an adult offers fresh challenges and exciting opportunities. With planning and perseverance, it opens up a variety of doors that add new meaning to life. What better time to consider the endless possibilities of returning to school? You’ll be glad you did! v Gayla Grace is a freelance writer, a life-long learner, and a wife and mom to five children.

Cape Fear Academy Student Chosen to Attend HOBY World Leadership Conference Rebecca Early, a rising junior at Cape Fear Academy, attended the Hugh O’Brien Youth World Leadership Conference from July 19 – 26 at Loyola University Chicago. Rebecca is the second student from CFA in the last two years to receive this honor. Rising senior, Victor Agbafe, represented North Carolina last summer at the conference. Over 400 students representing up to 20 countries attend this unique week-long international program comprised of keynote presentations, speakers’ panels, interactive workshops, field trips, and community service projects. Victor also was chosen to attend this summer’s session of NC Boy’s State, a leadership experience sponsored by the American Legion, where he received the Rex ‘Tiger’ Tillotson award, for being the citizen who best demonstrated the ideal of “participate with enthusiasm.” Rebecca summarized her experience: “I’ve had the opportunity to meet some incredible students from all over the world. I can now say that I have good friends in Iraq, Taiwan, and China, as well as in many other countries. I’ve have been exposed to so many different cultures and my eyes have been opened to new ways of thinking. In addition, I was able to be a part of the biggest service project HOBY has ever done. Five hundred and twenty-five of us gathered in Humboldt Park in Chicago to paint, mulch, and clean up the park. This service project, in itself, was extremely rewarding.” For over five decades, Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership (HOBY) has inspired young people to make a difference and become catalysts for positive change in their home, school, workplace, and community. As America’s foremost youth leadership organization, HOBY has a long and impressive history of successfully motivating youth and volunteers to outstanding leadership. HOBY’s mission is to inspire and develop our global community of youth and volunteers to a life dedicated to leadership, service, and innovation through its core values of Volunteerism, Integrity, Excellence, Diversity, and Community Partnership.

Celebrate, and Learn Too! By Danielle Villegas

f you’re tired of the same old birthday party themes that only teach kids to eat unlimited amounts of sugar while ripping open presents at record speed, it may be time to try something a little different. What if a birthday party was actually an educational experience? These party ideas prove that “learning” does not equal boring!
Yoga Party Wilmington is a hotbed of Yoga instructors! Hire an experienced Yoga teacher to come to your home and teach a fun class where kids explore and discover the mind and body while learning Yoga poses, and play Yoga based games and activities. Fun ideas: • Craft - make your own Yoga Breathing Buddies. These can be tiny sewed stuffed animals or little pillows. • Games: Yoga obstacle course and Yoga activity bingo. • Yoga mats make great party favors. • Finish the day with a kid created group Yoga pose!
Around the World Birthday Party SPECIAL SECTION: Party Guide
Invite your guests to go on a trip around the world! Set up different party areas or rooms with a different theme for places around the world. Decorate each area with the country’s flag, favorite foods, music, travel brochures and posters. Here are a few countries and ideas to get you started, but with almost 200 countries around the world to choose from, you can take your guests anywhere! Italy. Red, white, and green linens should set the mood. Place children’s books (can be found at the library) of Rome, Naples, Milan and Venice on each table for guests to learn more about Italy. Serve delicious pasta dishes, breadsticks, and garlic bread. Ireland. Set up Irish flags, shamrocks, and a pot of gold. Kids can make leprechaun cutouts to take home. Serve Irish stew, or corned beef and cabbage. Morocco. Set up a Moroccan tent with colorful rugs, pillows and candles. Make feather fans and try a little belly dancing lesson. Temporary Henna tattoos will be a big hit with the kids. Serve Moroccan favorites like tangine chicken and couscous. Green tea with mint is a popular Moroccan drink. China. Make paper lanterns and origami shapes. Hand out fortune cookies Serve a Chinese fried rice or noodles and wontons. Encourage guests to eat with chopsticks. This type of party would work best with older children and brave taste buds! You don’t need very much of the food for each country. A tiny sample of each dish, a creative activity, a few decorations and music is all you need for a worldly birthday party!
Science Party There are many party venues around town that offer a science themed birthday party, but you can create your own at home too! Welcome the Scientists: • Greet the guests with safety goggles and a lab coat. • Hand each child a science notebook with a list of the experiments you will do that day. • Add a magnifying glass for a fun! Experiments: Here are a few ideas and websites with step-by-step instructions. • Walking Water- With the use of cheap paper towels and cups of water, little scientists can see the water move from one cup to another. • Swirling Colors Milk - Learn a little chemistry with milk, food coloring, and dish soap. • Make Your Own Lava Lamps - A little hippie science to take home! • Ivory Soap Explosion - Some soap and a microwave. What could be more fun than that! • Bending Water - Brush a comb through a head of hair 10 times, and watch it bend water from a faucet. All these experiments and more can be found at www.playbasedlearning.com.au; www.cometogetherkids.com; www.sciencebob.com. Food Fun: To add some science fun to the food, have the kids make their own molecules. All you need: blueberries, raspberries, marshmallows, and small straws.

arents of multiples have special challenges when it comes to celebrating birthdays. They want each child to feel their birthday is unique, even if it is shared with a sibling or two. Some local members of the Cape Fear Mothers of Twins Club share how they create birthday memories for everyone to enjoy! Helene Zahn-Chilberg -For all twelve years we have sung Happy Birthday twice and lit two sets of candles.
Fowler's Funflatables LLC 910-297-5214 or 910- 231-7470 fowlersfunflatables@aol.com Choose from 30 units!
Meredith Olski- We sing twice as well and I do two mini cakes! If we are having a party or extended family dinner I will make an easy sheet cake for everyone else. Cathi Morse - For our guys, they each chose their theme and l get a little decorations for each. For example, we had a Minecraft/Pokemon theme last year. Table cover was a grass print, then small packages of plates, cups, and napkins for each theme. They each have their own chosen cake; however we sing one time (they have never had the patience to wait for the song 2x). With them having their own input, even if they chose the same thing, they are happy. Harmony Embraced - My twins choose the theme and I blend them when needed. They each get their own cupcake at the party and we sing to them both. We make whatever meal they wanted for each of them. The day before and after we do a day that is just one of them. So one day would be A’s day. We play his favorite games and eat his favorite snacks. The next day it’s B’s turn. We talk about how each of them is special. Even though they were born on the same day, they are both important and individual. They’re just lucky enough to share a birthday. Cynthia Boulay - My twins are two and a half, and I learned that it is far easier and cheaper to go outside the house and celebrate at a party venue. Not every mom agrees it is necessary to separate the birthdays. One mother said, “In early years I did “twin” themes. We did a Noah’s ark theme, 2x2. My favorite was the year we did the yellow twins from Thomas the Tank Engine and photoshopped the boys’ pictures on their faces for the invites.”

Crazy Cake
H
By Danielle Villegas
ave a child with eggs or dairy allergies, or know of a child coming to the party with that will not be able to enjoy the cake because of the dairy and eggs? Crazy Cake is made with no eggs, milk, or butter and tastes moist and delicious! Crazy Cake was first created in the Great Depression and used to go by the name “Depression Cake”. Some ingredients were hard to come by during this time and moms found a way to still celebrate with a yummy cake! The fun part about this cake, you don’t even need a bowl or a mixer. This is a fun recipe for kids to help with that doesn’t end with a mess. Ingredients: 1 1/2 Cups 3 Tbsp. 1 Cup 1 tsp. 1/2 tsp. 1 tsp. 1 tsp. 5 Tbsp. 1 Cup
flour (all-purpose) cocoa (unsweetened) sugar (All purchase sugar - Granulated Pure Cane Sugar) baking soda salt white vinegar pure vanilla extract vegetable oil water

Cape Fear Literacy Council Helping Families the World Over
T
By Danielle Villegas
he Cape Fear Literacy Council is well known for its Adult Literacy classes and literacy focused community events. For the past 25 years the Literacy Council has also been welcoming adults from other countries and helping them to acquire English skills through English classes for Speakers of Other Languages. This real world practice in a safe environment is provided by volunteers who teach beginner, intermediate, and advanced classes, one-on-one tutoring, Citizenship Prep, Math, Writing, GED, TOEFL, and Computer Classes. The Cape Fear Literacy Council teaches adults from over 40 countries, from 5 continents that speak around 20 different languages. What do they all have in common? They want to fully embrace and understand the English language. Many of the people who come here to live, work, and raise their families have taken English classes in their country of origin. However, there is a big difference between learning in a classroom and real world speaking and listening. Without practice, they may understand English but are not confident enough to respond. This is especially challenging for parents who have children in school.
Parenting in a Confusing World Navigating school life can be challenging for an average person. However, trying to fill out the right forms, ask the questions that matter the most, make decisions about birthday parties, sleepovers, and playdates, and simply become a part of the school community can be difficult if you are not entirely comfortable with speaking and understanding the English language. If a parent is unsure of what a field trip form says, they may be hesitant to blindly sign away their permission. The Cape Fear Literacy Council not only teaches speaking and listening skills. They teach reading, writing, vocabulary, and pronunciation. Giving parents confidence to be an active participant in their child’s school life and greatly increasing that child’s chances for success.
Success Leads to Giving Back Barbara Biba, the ESOL Program Director at CFLC says, “One mother who attended classes at the Literacy Council started out feeling fearful about volunteering at her child’s school. She desperately wanted to be one of the parents that could be counted on to help during events and special projects.” Barbara explained that this mother was worried that her lack of
36 | September 2014 | Wilmington Parent
English language understanding would lead to confusion and awkward moments. However, she consistently studied and attended classes and was soon giving back to the school. Barbara says, “She became a mother that would help whenever anything was needed. Eventually, she was even able to accept a position as a teacher’s assistant.”
Offering a Friendly Face Parents in our community have a unique opportunity to reach out to other parents based on the common love of their children and the desire to raise healthy, happy, responsible, kind-hearted citizens. Sometimes just a friendly face, or an offer for assistance with a classroom volunteer sign-up list can be a bridge to understanding and confidence. When a parent can confidently communicate their questions, and understand the answers, they not only will be able to rely on themselves to navigate their child’s educational life, they will also be able to positively contribute to the school and community.
CFLC is Expanding! The Cape Fear Literacy Council is pleased to announce the completion of a second building located right next door to the original blue building. This new building will allow for greater literacy opportunities, more classroom space, and more room for training new volunteers.
Interested in Volunteering? If you would like to volunteer by helping teach a class, tutoring one-onone, or assisting in the office, the next CFLC 101 session will be held on September, 3rd 5:30-7:30. This information session will explain the ESOL Tutor Certification Workshop and show you what volunteer opportunities are available.
Upcoming Event 27th Annual Spelling Bee September 18 at 7pm at Pine Valley Methodist Church on Shipyard Boulevard. The entire community is invited to share in an evening devoted to words! Admission is free and there will be audience games and prizes. For more information about the CFLC’s expansion, classes, and volunteer opportunities, please feel free to contact Barbara or Janice at 251-0911 or visit www.cfliteracy.org. v
