ill Ellis Barbecue and Chicken Restaurant, located at the corner of Forest Hills Road and Downing Street in Wilson, opened in 1963 and is now a Wilson institution. But with the giant fleet of full-service catering trucks Bill has acquired over the years, and the determination to bring his eastern North Carolina barbecue to people anywhere and anytime, Bill’s name is now known worldwide. Bill, Tracy, Vickie and Lawrence Ellis (pictured to the left) operate 35 different catering trucks and vans and will cater any menu. The trucks have mobile, self-contained kitchens included in each one, where they cook all chicken and cornbread on site. The famous barbecue and chicken is always a favorite choice, but Bill’s catering department — with a chef always on duty to assist you with your needs — has prepared everything from heavy hor d’oeuvres to seafood buffets to gourmet plates from California to Canada. They can also ship food to your event anywhere in the world. The restaurant stands by its promise that it can cater “one to one million” anytime, anywhere, and any shift. But if you’re in Wilson and just looking for some good food fast, Bill’s offers a lunch and dinner buffet Sunday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., and Friday and Saturday, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Choose from Pig Pickin’ on the grill, chopped BBQ, baked and fried chicken, hamburger steak, chicken pastry, Brunswick stew, boiled potatoes, rice, collards, fish, cabbage, yams, mashed potatoes, green beans, slaw, corn and other country vegetables, hot dogs, sausage, tossed salad, hushpuppies and much more. Don’t forget to save room for the homemade desserts made fresh daily, including peach cobbler, banana pudding, cookies, cakes and more. Also, Wi-Fi is now available in both the restaurant and convention center.

ince opening its doors in October of 2012, City Market Café and Catering has sought to feed downtown Wilson simple, wholesome meals, marrying fresh ingredients with cuisine of a “new South.” It’s mission statement, “to eat well is to live well,” encapsulates what owner Gaynell Stallings is trying to achieve with both the restaurant and catering business. The seasonal lunch menus, which Stallings devises herself, are designed to bring in all walks of life through the doors and feature a variety of gourmet options. Comfort foods, homemade soups, chili and chicken pot pie are just some of the items you’ll find this fall. Another thing you’ll find this fall at City Market Café is the introduction of ready-made, grab-and-go treats such as quiches, sweet potato pies, pecan pies, egg custard, house-made salad dressings, gourmet popcorn and much more. Whether you need a pie for Thanksgiving dinner or want to put together a gift basket of treats for a Christmas present, City Market Café has exactly what you need. This winter, Stallings also has plans to expand the restaurant to include a room for wine tastings and a “farm table,” which will be filled with a variety of gourmet foods that compliment the evening’s wine choices. These events are designed to bring crowds back downtown during evening hours. So much more than just Downtown Wilson’s favorite lunch spot, City Market Café and Catering’s planned expansion, evolving menus and pre-packaged homemade goods provide the Wilson area with a greater opportunity to eat well and, consequently, to live well too.

ack in 1946, the Parker brothers shipped timber from Pitt County up the Tar River to Wilson County to be milled prior to the construction of their new restaurant: Parker’s Barbecue. Today, over 60 years later, their milled timber still houses a consistently packed restaurant serving the same great food. Parker’s continues to thrive largely on a legendary worth-of-mouth reputation built by locals and out-of-state travelers alike. Parker’s feeds people from all over the country on any given day. Time has shown that folks go out of their way to stop at Parker’s when traveling. Its reputation for “good food and good service,” is the main draw that current owners Kevin Lamm, Eric Lippard and Donald Williams admit customers often praise them for. Eat in, take out or allow Parkers to provide fullservice catering to your event. After 67 years and counting, it’s a safe bet to follow the crowd.

veryone in the Wilson area who knows and loves good food has been counting down to this occasion — when noted local chef Daniel Bass struck out on his own and opened the doors of his first restaurant: Daniel’s Casual Fine Dining. Wilson native Bass, the former Executive Chef of Pup’s Steakhouse, first gained experience running a kitchen during his years in Greenville and then later took his natural talent to Asheville, where he sharpened his skills working alongside some of the state’s finest chefs for several years before returning home to Wilson. Stop in to enjoy Daniel’s signature take on many American dishes, from a fresh crab cake sandwich or any assorted salads made to order at lunch, to elegant shrimp and grits, stuffed pork tenderloin or blackened Chilean salmon for dinner. Want a variety of flavor? Try several of Daniel’s “small plates,” such as spiced tuna, foie gras or oysters. Daniel’s Casual Fine Dining has a full-service bar with craft beers on draft, a covered front patio, rain or shine catering and a private dining room. The wait is over. ince Amy Davis and Josephine Finch took the reins of the well known Wilson landmark The Country Restaurant this year, they have continued the restaurant’s grand tradition of tasty Southern staples by cooking it “just like Grandma taught” them. At Amy Jo’s Country Restaurant, you start the day with a good ol’ country breakfast, including your choice of eggs, bacon, sausage, country ham, tenderloin, omelets, pancakes, french toast, waffles or, of course, their wonderful cheese biscuits. For lunch, they offer a wide variety of burgers, hot dogs and sandwiches, with daily specials and six different meat choices each day. On the side, you can’t go wrong with any of their freshly-cooked vegetables. But don’t forget about the great selection of homemade desserts. Try Amy’s “Almost Famous Chew Bread,” a 9-layer chocolate cake, pineapple cake, coconut cake, chocolate pie or homemade banana pudding, just to name a few. You can get any of it by the slice or order a whole cake to take home. On Thursdays and Fridays, Amy Jo’s offers dinner until 8 p.m., and Friday night is seafood night, with a variety of fresh seafood including flounder, shrimp, oysters, plus four other meat choices and endless sides. So stop by for breakfast, lunch or dinner. At Amy Jo’s, the tradition continues. And it’s as great as ever.

ocated just down the road in the quaint rural town of Farmville, the small and unassuming brewery Duck-Rabbit has been making big waves in the craft beer world since it sold its first beer in August of 2004. Duck-Rabbit has become known as the dark beer specialist, producing a steady output of beautiful, delicious, and full-flavored dark beers, especially their flagship brew — DuckRabbit Milk Stout — a sweet stout in the English tradition, brewed with lactose, the sugar found in milk. Duck-Rabbit likes to claim that they “brew beers for happy people.” And in the last nine years, many of those happiest have been the judges of national and international beer competitions, as Duck-Rabbit has taken home plenty of medals and top-honor distinctions as masters of their craft. The brewery’s tasting room is open every Friday from 3 to 8 p.m. and hopes to have Saturday hours soon. The mood and atmosphere is completely casual, comfortable and convivial, and the staff will offer informal brewery tours during the tasting room hours to any customer who wishes. The brewery doesn’t have a kitchen, so they encourage anyone to bring food to the tasting room to enjoy with a delicious Duck-Rabbit beer if they wish. With such a welcoming, world-class brewery just down the road, it’s no wonder why they enjoy such a growing fan base of “happy” Eastern North Carolina customers by the day.

or as many people that eat, or have eaten, doughnuts from The Wilson Doughnut Shop over the years, it’s often surprising to many to realize that the same place that has supplied the area with its original recipe of delicious doughnut for the last 61 years has some pretty great things to offer that have nothing to do with doughnuts. Some people do know about the breakfast, however. And along with their glazed doughnut, chocolate long john or lemon puff — all made on-site daily with the shop’s homemade chocolate and homemade cream, mind you — they can get any number of 14 biscuits. Tenderloin, scrambled sausage/egg, hoop cheese, turkey link, link sausage — the list goes on. They could even round out their order with some fresh grits or hashbrowns. And they could get it all for the reasonable prices that one would expect to see at a place that primarily sells doughnuts. But it’s the lunch that seems to be the best kept secret at Wilson Doughnut Shop. Lunch specials are added each week, and soup and sandwich combos are available once the weather turns off cold. But it is the everyday, affordable menu staples that keep those in-the-know coming back. From the cheeseburgers, made from fresh meat pattied out daily, to the chicken salad, grilled chicken sandwiches and rib-eye steak sandwiches, the shop is definitely worth swinging back by in the afternoon... Even if it’s only been a few hours since you left it.

A

lthough only in its second year on the Wilson dining scene, Maid-Rite Diner, owned and operated locally by the Collier family, has been creating legions of fans across the United States since its first quick-service, casual dining franchise opened its doors in 1926. Their seasoned “loose meat” sandwiches may initially sound odd to a Southerner, but this Midwestern chain’s signature dish will make you rethink what a burger can be. Or try an “Italian Rite,” which includes savory seasoned Italian sausage, old world marinara, sautéed peppers and onions and melted mozzarella cheese served on a ciabatta bun. Many of their delicious and unique sandwiches and wraps are made with pork, chicken and turkey that the folks at Maid-Rite smoke on site. Whatever you choose, you can’t go wrong. Though the menu and recipes are time tested — and its customers fiercely loyal — the Colliers began adding to the mix last year with the inclusion of a full breakfast menu on weekends. This year, they kept innovating by introducing rib and brisket dinners and even installing a wooden bar, fully stocked with an array of cocktails. It’s all part of the Colliers’ plans to make Maid-Rite more of a sit-down, casual dining establishment, rather than simply a diner. Maid-Rite also offers catering for any event. Too busy to go out for lunch? Maid-Rite is happy to offer delivery to local hotels and businesses as well. Let them show you what they can do. So call or come by the diner out by I-95... and see what folks across the country have been talking about for almost 80 years. And see how their Wilson owners building on that tradition by giving it a modern twist.

Kountry Kitchen

The Home Of Fine Country Cooking

“We invite you to come sample the finest country cooking in Wilson!”

MONDAY-FRIDAY

T

im Whitley revived the Kountry Kitchen three years ago after the long-standing restaurant lay dormant for a couple of years. And from the outset, his focus was on one thing: quality. Quality ingredients, quality staff and a quality environment for locals to enjoy “fine country food.” The strategy paid off. The feedback from the lunch buffets and “Kountry Breakfasts” is nothing but positive, and the restaurant’s space is at its maximum capacity most days. Though breakfast is not offered on a buffet — so it can be as fresh as possible — standouts of the country staples include their homemade pancakes and biscuits. On the lunch buffet, a rotating mix of everything from outstanding chicken pastry to tender BBQ ribs and tasty meatloaf complement collards, squash and cabbage, among countless other items. On the cold side of the bar, they offer treats such as homemade chicken salad and deviled eggs all day. Though the restaurant can seat over 100, it includes a small dining room that seats 32 and is available for reservations. Kountry Kitchen also expanded its catering business since its reopening, adding a van and catering small parties and both business and social events all around Eastern NC. The success Whitley has seen is attributed mainly to word-of-mouth advertising. Customers come in, love their experience and tell their friends. It’s hard to find a better seal of approval in Wilson County when a new restaurant opens — especially for a type of food so ubiquitous in the South and a clientèle so prone to loyalty to their former spots — than to have a steady stream of new faces appear and then reappear time and time again. So if it keeps holding itself to the highest standard of quality it currently does, Kountry Kitchen will continue to grow in Wilson for a long time to come.

Two Wilson destinations. One convenient location. The Pioneer Jewelry and Pawn, Wilson’s oldest and largest pawn shop, has been proudly serving the community of Wilson since 1982. And since 2007, RedPhish Music has emerged as Wilson’s go-to music store, in addition to the other four RedPhish stores that can be found throughout Eastern North Carolina. Now, as of this August, the two Wilson stores can be found under the same roof at 925-F1 Ward Boulevard. The two businesses will continue to operate separately, but will now provide added convenience for their loyal local customers. Stop by and shop for quality used jewelry, home electronics, tools, firearms on one side of the building, and walk to the other to peruse the best selection of musical equipment in Wilson, in addition to equipment repair, music lessons and professional installations. At 925-F1 Ward Boulevard, you can find it all.

W

illiam’s Downtown Bar & Grille offers a change of pace for Historic Downtown Wilson. Located just one block from the courthouse, William’s offers contemporary American cuisine in a comfortable, casual atmosphere. Owner Bill Fenner opened the restaurant in early 2013 with a vision of a great menu filled with original, homemade items that appeal to both the lunch and dinner crowds. Don’t think of it as a “fine-dining” establishment. It is the unique and upscale take on the traditional American dishes that make William’s Downtown Bar and Grille stand out from the chain restaurants. For lunch, their Cuban sandwich with sweet potato fries is already a local favorite, as is the Chicken Club Sandwich. For dinner try the Shrimp and Grits or the house-made Chicken Cordon Bleu. Their speciality burgers appeal to everyone, from the sophistication of the creamy brie cheese on the Downtown Burger to the down home Carolina-style of mustard, chili and onions on the Cackalack Burger. Whether it’s the homemade sauces and dressings or the unique black-eyed pea burgers, you can tell that great care went into creating and preparing every detail. The staff at William’s are there to provide a quick option for the downtown lunch crowd with “express items” on the menu, as well as box lunches for those on the go. They also welcome call-in orders for dine-in or take-out, allowing you to call ahead and have your food served at your table quickly. Each day features a different Blue Plate Special during lunch hours, as well as Chef’s Choice Specials during evening hours. It’s the attention to detail and personal service — combined with a

unique menu and casual atmosphere — that makes William’s poised to serve Historic Downtown Wilson for a long time to come.

Great Food, Great Prices, Great Service!

N

ow in its sixth year of operation, Quince prides itself as “A Southern Bistro.” Truly a chef-driven restaurant, the menu includes a realm of classic Southern cuisine but with a broad stroke of personal interpretation that is always fresh and seasonal. According to owner Peter Edgar: “Our menu highlights the best of each season, keeping only a few of our ‘signature favorites’ year round, which give our guests even more reason to come back and explore.” Quince has a full bar in the front of the restaurant that offers a cozy dining area along with specialty beers on tap, which — like the menus — change with the seasons. You may also want to try a glass of wine or select a bottle from their extensive wine collection from vineyards around the world. Adjacent to the bar area, in the cozy and inviting dining rooms, service is always delivered with casual elegance by a friendly, attentive staff that makes you feel truly appreciated. With unique dishes that capitalize on all the original flavors in the South and diners who range from lawyers to neighborhood loyals, Quince has merited distinction in Wilson and the surrounding area. But don’t stop in the dining areas. Continue down the hall to Quince’s garden, which includes another full bar, live entertainment most weekends and a warm fireplace that offers softly burning candles in the summer and a blazing fire when nights are cooler. In addition to having unique culinary experience on-site, Quince will cater anywhere in Eastern North Carolina and the staff is knowledgeable, friendly and more than willing to assist you in planning your next extraordinary event.

S

et to open this fall, Lou Reda’s: An American Table is poised to bring a wide variety of upscale American cuisine to the Rocky Mount/Wilson area. Lou Reda’s is almost unclassifiable by traditional culinary standards. It’s neither a steak house, a seafood restaurant or “meat and three” comfort food joint — it’s all of those places and more. Along with delicious staples like a Cowboy Ribeye, Chicken and Waffle, Crispy Balsamic Glazed Pork Belly — among countless other menu items you won’t find anywhere else — owner Lou and chef Justin Gaines will explore the vast culinary landscape of America week by week, focusing on different regions and temporarily bringing their staples to the menu. One week could have a Cajun/Creole focus serving Gumbo, Jambalaya, Po-boy’s and Etouffee and the like. Another could imitate the many English and Irish pubs of New England, serving up generous portions of bangers and mash or shepherd’s pie. Whatever they do, Reda and Gaines want to remain flexible. After 22 years in the restaurant business, Reda knows not to tie himself to a single dish, because a signature dish is all in the eye — and taste buds — of the customer. Along with a commitment to variety, Reda and Gaines are equally as committed to freshness and quality. Everything is made in house, from BBQ sauce to soups, demi-glace, etc. That quality extends to the bar area as well, where a 25-foot stainless steel bar top offers up a variety of delicious bourbon-infused cocktails. Like their sauces, all of their mixing syrups will be made in house. At Lou Reda’s, come experience the variety of flavors America has to offer — all at one table.
